Erie Mining Co. is a 10.3-million-tpy pellet producer on the east end of the Mesabi Range 60 miles north of Duluth. Its complex includes facilities for mining, crushing, grinding and beneficiation in addition to a pellet plant and power plant. A 74-mile railroad links the mine and plant to Taconite Harbor on the shore of Lake Superior. The concentrate recovery ratio at Erie is about 1: 3, and this, along with stripping activity, makes it necessary for the company to mine nearly a million tons of material a week. At the outset, all crude ore mined at Erie was hauled entirely by rail, but with expansion into additional mining areas, the company made a gradual transition towards truck-to-rail haulage. Today, in Erie's 11th year of operation, over 50% of all crude taconite mined is transported by truck to loading pockets where it is transferred to rail cars. Future years will see more taconite moved in this manner. Thus, the company has an increasing interest in tire performance.

Mr. Chance refers to his examination, in 1897, of " the (Carboniferous) limestone plateau-country which encircles the central area of the Black Hills," and says that " it had been generally assumed that the mineralization of this formation was confined to the northern area;" further, that he "found, however, a general mineralization, extending in zones or belts throughout the region," and that the ores, being more or less specially

The phases and equilibria in the W-Co-C system have been studied by X-ray diffraction methods, metallographic technique, and thermal analysis. In addition to the 7 phase, two double carbides, called 8 and have been revealed. The compositions correspond to CO3 W6C2 and Co3-W10C4. The reactions leading to these phases have been explained and tentative diagrams of stable and metastable equilibria proposed. The basic reactions in sintering cobalt cemented tungsten carbides are discussed. THE W-Co-C system is of fundamental importance in practical carbide manufacturing as well as for the understanding of the sintering mechanism. Surprisingly little is known about this system, for the probable reason that all the important alloys are of two-phase structure and that the diagram Co-WC has been treated as a quasi-binary. This obviously is incorrect, because WC decomposes before melting. One ternary phase, 7, of composition Co3W3C has long been known. It was first studied by Adelskold, Sundelin, and Westgren,1 although the isomorphous iron-tungsten carbide was known earlier. There have been in the literature several reports of two 7 phases.' " Also the 7 phase has been considered unstable by Takeda4 and Westgren.1 The Co-WC diagram has been studied by Wyman and Kelley5 and a quasi-binary diagram has been published by Sandford and Trent.2 Takeda has published a tentative Co-W-C diagram, considering both metastable and stable equilibria. However, the lines of two-fold saturation are shown only partially and it seems impossible to complete the diagram without violating the phase theory. Therefore it seemed desirable to examine the system in more detail. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in the present investigation were made of powders of tungsten, tungsten monocarbide, cobalt, and carbon and were of the grade used in manufacture of commercial cemented carbides. The powders were ground and mixed in small stainless steel ball mills, using balls of the same material. Benzene was used as a dispersing agent. The mixing period was 1 hr, since this was shown to give suffi- ciently good mixing of the powders without too great a contamination from the mill. After ball milling, the specimens were pressed in cylindrical or rectangular dies. No paraffin or other lubricant was used and the small compacts had sufficient green strength to be handled without difficulty. Several sintering furnaces were employed. The most satisfactory arrangement was a vacuum furnace based on the Arsem principle which employed a graphite helix as the resistance heating element. Specimens were placed on graphite stands and there was generally a slight carburization or decarburiza-tion of the specimen surface, depending on the carbon content of the alloy. The evaporation of the cobalt at a sintering temperature of 1400°C was not significant, but became severe at 1500°C and higher. The sintering time was 1 hr at 2000°C and 2 to 4 hr at lower temperatures. It was not possible to quench the specimens, but the cooling rates were rather fast, greater than 300°C in the first minute. In the system under investigation, the reactions are sluggish, and it is believed that the high temperature structures are satisfactorily retained. The principal method of investigating the sintered specimens was X-ray diffraction by the Norelco recording spectrometer. Approximate determinations of the phase boundaries were made by the disappearing phase method. Ternary Phases To study the phase formation in W-Co-C system, a series of specimens was sintered at 1400°C. In this experiment two ternary phases, called here ? and k were formed in addition to the well-known 7 phase. The 7 phase, which has been completely described by Westgren: showed a range of homogeneity from 7 to 20 pct C and from 38 to 48 pct Co. At 1400°C the 7 phase was found to be in equilibrium with monotungsten carbide, 8, tungsten, 8, #?, and liquid. The boundaries toward #? and liquid were difficult to determine and appeared to be very temperature sensitive. The other boundaries are believed to be well fixed. The existence of a surface charge on the alkali halide salts is shown, and a flotation mechanism involving surface charge and collector solubility is developed. Data suggest that KC1 is positively charged and that NaCl is negatively charged in saturated brines, and that the neutral molecule RNH,Cl is the collector in the amine-KC1 system, RSO, is the collector in the sulfonate-KC1 system, and RCOONa) is the collector in the fatty acid-NaCl system. A number of hypotheses have been advanced to explain the mechanism of soluble salt flotation; one of these involves exchange between collector ions and surface cations. With this mechanism Gaudin1 suggested that the differences in flotability of halite and sylvite with primary amines are due to the ionic size of the RNH;, Kt, and Na t ions. Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau expanded this hypothesis to include many other alkali halide salts. Several exceptions to this hypothesis are known. That is, this model does not explain why salts containing the same cation, or why salts of different degrees of hydration, respond differently to flotation. For example, why NaI is floated with an amine whereas NaI .2H,O is not. Further, no correlation between ionic size and flotation response can be made with sulfonate or car-boxylate as collectors. In addition, this hypothesis does not explain the effect of magnesium or lead activation, nor does it offer any explanation of the role of temperature in salt flotation. Rogers and Schulman3 realized some of the inadequacies of the ion exchange mechanism and proposed another mechanism based on the heat of solution of the salts. They concluded that weakly hydrated salts can be floated with alkyl amines and sulfonates, that strongly hydrated salts can be floated with fatty acids, and that excessively hydrated salts cannot be floated at all. As a part of the systematic study of the alloys of iron under the auspices of the Engineering Foundation, and preliminary to the commencement of comprehensive work on this larger subject, the authors have undertaken an investigation of the available literature dealing with the alloys of iron and silicon. The purpose is to collect all the data in English and foreign languages and present them in two monographs, one of a more scientific and the second of a more industrially useful nature. Of course, a great deal of information upon the constitution of the iron-silicon alloys was found specificially upon the changes of phase in the equilibrium diagram and the different phases present, such as solid solution, chemical compounds (iron silicides), etc. While no extended research was contemplated in the particular study undertaken, nevertheless the data collected proved to be so contradictory in many respects that a simple study of some of the outstanding problems involved in the constitution and equilibrium diagram was undertaken. Because research was not a primary object of the work, and also because of the extreme industrial importance of the silicon alloys between 0.80 and 14 per cent. silicon, and finally because of the unsatisfactory state of knowledge existing as to these alloys, the experimental investigation was limited entirely to alloys with less than 10 per cent. silicon. Discussion oF Continuous Series It has often been said in print that the iron-silicon alloys form a continuous series of solid solutions from 0 to 15 per cent. silicon. This claim the authors are inclined to doubt: first, because the alloys from 0 to 4.25 per cent. silicon are ductile and malleable at atmospheric temperature, while those with 5 per cent. or more of silicon are comparatively hard and brittle. Furthermore, the alloys with more than 4.25 per cent. silicon are comparatively hard and low in ductility at atmospheric temperature, but become much more ductile when heated slightly. The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. Details of the structure of these carbons and the variations of their structure with deposition conditions have been reported.'-3 It has been shown in previous work that the neutron-

(communication to the Secretary*): The Taviche mining-district is generally known as " Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jero-nimo Taviche. It is so called by Jose G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." Since 1978, the titanium metals industry, throughout the non-socialist world, has experienced a period of growth and prosperity unparalleled since the late 1950s. Sponge producers, melters and mill product manufacturers have operated at capacity, record shipments have been attained, new producers have entered the industry and established producers have implemented expansion plans. However, there is now mounting evidence that the underlying elements which generated this vigorous surge have abated, at least temporarily. It now appears that in 1982, the industry will encounter overcapacity, excessive inventory accumulations and the probability of declining prices. Therefore, it does seem appropriate that we now take inventory of the present and future markets for titanium with the hope we can identify both near term opportunities as well as challenges the industry now faces. If we view the development of titanium markets as a function of time, they fit rather neatly into three sectors.

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. Experiments on both suljidation and hot corrosion have been carried out using ternary Ni-Cr-X alloys and commercial nickel-base superalloys. It has been shown that lhere are certain micro structural similarities between sulfidation using H,S/H2 mixtures and hot corvosion using Na,S04 in "crucible" experiments or hot corrosion tests using a flame tunnel apparatus. It is proposed that two key processes in the hot cowosion process are: 1) formation of chromium sulfides which deplete the alloy matrix, and 2) oxidation which can be accelerated because of chromium depletion. Other processes play an important role in the hot corrosion process, such as accelerated oxidation attack due to the presence of a N& S04 or N&SO,- NaC2 film which inhibits the formation of a protective external oxide scale. However, this latter phenomenon was not studied in this work. THE term hot corrosion has come to mean a combination of sulfur and oxygen attack on nickel-base or cobalt-base superalloys used as gas turbine blades or partitions. This attack can be initiated by any combustion process in air involving fuel containing sulfur if the sulfur level is sufficiently high. Levels of 5 pet SO2l for example, in the combusting gas have been observed to produce hot corrosion attack on nickel-base alloys. The important immediate corroding medium in aircraft gas turbines, however, has been established to be Na2S04, formed from reaction between NaCl from sea air and sulfur in the fuel.' The Na2S04 concentrates the sulfur sufficiently so that superalloy parts heated in the range 1400" to 1900°F can become sulfided by reducing the Na2S04 film which forms on the parts, and this reaction allows sulfur to gain access to the alloy. The sulfur thus released diffuses into the superalloy and forms primarily chromium sulfides of various compositions, but frequently Cr2S, has been identified. Figs. 1 and 2 show the morphology typical of hot corrosion of a cobalt-base superalloy X-45 (25 Cr, 10 Ni, 7.5 W, 0.25 C) and a nickel-base alloy, Udimet 500 (19 Cr, 19 Co, 4 Mo, 3 Ti, 2.9 Al, 0.07 C). Both alloy samples were subjected to the same hot corrosion conditions: 616 hr at 1600°F in a combusted 2.9 pct S distillate oil containing 125 ppm Na as NaC1. It will be noted at once that the nickel-base alloy is much more severely attacked. The depth of corrosion is much greater and the number and size of the sulfides present are much greater. Both alloys show a duplex oxide scale, which is more noticeable in the X-45 alloy. The external scale is probably a spinel in both cases, with CrQ3 lying next to the alloy. Many investigators1 -"ve been concerned with hot corrosion phenomena, but there has been a lack of unanimity of opinion as to the details of the hot corrosion mechanism. More than one definition of hot corrosion is possible. Some investigators con- sider as a measure of hot corrosion only the weight gain due to an accelerated oxidation. However another point of view is that the total depth of affected alloy may be used as a measure. While it is recognized that surface oxidation attack is greatly accelerated by the presence of salts like Na2S04 or Na2S04-NaC1 mixtures, sulfur penetration into the alloy also undoubtedly produces very important effects. The region of sul-fide penetration which is so prominent in Fig. 2 is one of the outstanding characteristics of hot corrosion. For highly stressed parts, such as first-stage buckets, this sulfur-penetrated region can be more significant in mechanical property loss than the reduction of cross section produced by the formation of the massive external scale. In addition, evidence will be presented that this sulfided region can be less resistant to subsequent oxidation attack. One pound of ultra pul-e molybdenum has been produced containing both metallic and nonmetallic impuvities close to or less than the limits of detection. various purification methods were investigated; althouglz the use of move than one purification step was consideved, it was found that a single, caefully-controlled sublimation of MoCl5 yielded a highly puvified product without prior treatment or recourse to repeated sublimation. Hydrogen reduction of MoC1, to metal was attempted at atmospheric pressure; however, reduced pressure was necessary to obtain substantial yields. The tubular deposits of metal were consolidated into bulk fovm by electron beam melting undev high vacuum yielding a very low gas content. Boblems involved in monitoring the puvity of these materials and analytical results obtained are also presented. THE pronounced effect of even trace amounts of impurities upon fundamental properties of materials is well known to metallurgists and solid-state physicists. Consequently, groups interested in basic studies of metals have in recent years immensely stimulated the preparation and production of numerous ultra-pure metals. Increased demand by scientists for these high purity materials has necessitated development of facilities to prepare them in significant quantities; the procedures reported here were devised to produce significant quantities of ultra-pure molybdenum. Previous work performed in the field of vapor phase purification and hydrogen reduction of several other refractory metal chlorides had demonstrated valuable techniques applicable to molybdenum.' Various purification and reduction steps were individually investigated. Those procedures which showed the most favorable results with respect both to attainment of high purity and to ease of operation were then incorporated in the process utilized to produce the metal.' STARTING MATERIALS It is well known that because of differences in volatility, chlorides may be separated by fractional distillation. It was presumed that distillation of molybdenum pentachloride offered a simple and straightforward method of purification due to its relatively low boiling point. Alternatively, sublimation of the solid chloride also appeared feasible since MoC15 has both a reasonably narrow temperature range in which it exists as a liquid (a property typical of refractory metal chlorides) and a low enthalpy of sublimation. Pertinent thermochemical data of MoC15 are given in Table I. It should be noted that this compound must be handled with care as it is extremely hygroscopic. Anhydrous MoC15 was obtained from the A Metal Climax Co. METHODS OF PURIFYING MOLYBDENUM PENTACHLORIDE Distillation. It was expected that distillation methods, while affording an efficient purification, would prove simple to control and would have a higher production rate than sublimation processes. Also considered was the possibility of effecting a high degree of purification by using both these volatilization methods in conjunction—possibly a distillation followed by sublimation of the solidified condensate. Distillation of MoC15 was investigated using a single stage distillation column packed with chemically resistant glass beads. Heating coils were wound around the column and collection tube (condenser). As-received MoCl5 was charged into a flask connected with the column using a side loading arm under an argon flow. After the column and condenser were brought to about 270" and 210°C, respectively, the apparatus was lowered until the flask was fully immersed in a constant temperature fused salt bath maintained at about 285 °C. Distillation was continued for about 10 or 15 min until 50 to 70 g of distillate had been collected. Analyses of these distillations indicated that several elements, e.g., Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, and Mg, were lowered in quantity although not all were removed to the same extent. The occurrence of Na, B, Si, and A1 in the distillates appeared to be due to contamination, possibly from corrosion of the pyrex glass. An improved distillation system of larger capacity and longer distilling column was built. Improvements were effected in lowering the amounts of such impurities as B, Mn, Ni, Na, Mg, Cr, Cu, and Fe. These studies were pursued concomitantly with efforts to purify by sublimation; it was subsequently found that although improvements in purity were obtained by distillation, sublimation processes were simpler to control and effected a high degree of purity.

Tonejc The present communication is concerned with the variation of the texture in aluminum wires with die angle and temperature, at constant speed of extrusion. Experiments were carried out concurrently on refined samples, with a stated purity of 99.997 pct pure A1 and commercial samples of 99.5 pct Al. Ingots of refined aluminum samples were machined to 30-mm-diam by 150-mm-long billets. These billets were transformed to 5-mm-diam wires by drawing. The final form, suitable for examination, was obtained by extrusion through conical-face dies with a 1-mm hole diam and extrusion ratio 5:l in diam. The initial form of the commercial aluminum samples was drawn wire 5 mm in diam. These samples showed a poorly defined texture with (111) as a major and (001) as a minor component. A similar defined texture appeared in the refined aluminum samples after drawing to 5 mm diam. Conical-face dies with different angles (defined by the axis and the generating line of the cone) were used in our experiments. The values of the angles were 27, 35, 45, 57, 63, and 90 deg. The extrusion container was fitted with a heating element and controller permitting temperatures up to 600°C to be maintained within i5"C. Extrusion was performed at 250°, 300°, 350°, 400°, and 500°C at constant speed (approximately 1 mm per sec) and constant die reduction. The extrusion product was a wire 1 mm in diam and approximately 20 cm long. In order to remove the surface layer with the "conical" texture and to reduce the absorption by the X-ray examination of the samples, the extruded wire was etched to 0.22 mm in diam. Experiments were performed in the middle sections of the 20-cm-long wires. In addition to the die of l-mm hole diam, dies with a 1.5-, 0.7-, 0.6-, 0.5-, and 0.4-mm hole diam and 63-deg die angle were constructed. In our experiments we did not find in these ranges any important difference concerning the texture of the extruded wires and we continued our work solely on the 1.0-mm die. The diffracted X-rays (Cu K radiation) were recorded photographically. Diffracted intensities were measured on the (111) reflection with a microphotometer. The relative amounts of texture components were determined from the areas under the diffracted maxima. We found the texture of extruded aluminum wires to be strongly influenced not only by the temperature of extrusion and the purity of the sample but also by the form of the die. It is generally admitted that cold-drawn aluminum wires have mainly a (111) texture with a small amount of (001) component, Table I of Ref. 1. In our experiments with wires extruded in conditions represented by Fig. 1, in some cases a single (001) texture was obtained. If these wires were drawn repeatedly at room temperature, X-ray measurements revealed a duplex (001)-(111) fiber texture. Further drawings increased the (111) and decreased the (001) texture component. In Fig. 1 the percentage of material oriented with (001) parallel to the extrusion direction is represented as a function of the temperature and the die angle (a), for commercial and refined aluminum samples, respectively. From these diagrams we may draw the following conclusions. The slope of the die (a) influenced more strongly the texture at the lower rather than the higher temperatures. Again, a stronger influence was found in the case of the commercial in comparison with refined aluminum samples. In the case of the commercial aluminum samples the amount of material with (001) texture increases with increasing wire temperature in an approximately linear manner. This effect is less pronounced in the pure aluminum samples, with the exception of the die with a = 45 deg. In this case the (001) texture decreases with increasing temperature, as shown in Fig. 1. Component (001) is more pronounced in higher-purity aluminum samples. Our experiments led to the conclusion that both (001) and (111) components are essentially stable in extruded aluminum wires. As we obtained a single (001) texture starting with a sample of drawn wire in which the (001) component was very weak, our experiments revealed that the (001) component is not a remnant of the initial texture; this is in disagreement with the findings of Vandermeer and McHargue.1 We gratefully acknowledge discussions with Professor M. In the foreword by C. K. Leith, Chairman of The Mineral Inquiry, it is pointed out that the ordinary mineral production tables do not show the commercial control, and that some knowledge of the situation is desirable as a background for the consideration of problems involving mineral raw materials. The report consists principally of tables, accompanied by a brief text, giving the production and an analysis of the control, according to nationality, of 18 minerals: aluminum, chromite, copper, iron and steel, lead, manganese ore, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrates, petroleum, potash, silver, sulfur, tin, tungsten, vanadium, and zinc. For the most part, the production figures for 1929 and the latest figures for reserves have been used. When feasible, the control has been shown at the various stages of production; mining, smelting and refining. American capital was dominant in the production of 10 mineral commodities, including six of the most important; British capital, in four instances; while Spanish, German, Chilean or Chinese interests cach led in the control of one. British, French, German, and Dutch capital occupied second place in the control of most of the important minerals. Between two-thirds and three-fourths of the world's mincral production is controlled by British and American capital.

The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders ¾ in. long. The nodulizing process described converts finely divided zinc calcine into a dense purified nodule. These zinc nodules are suitable for direct use in zinc reduction furnaces, especially the horizontal retort type, for the production of metal or American process zinc oxide furnaces for producing lead free zinc oxide. The basic reactions are carried out in a rotary kiln fired with fuel oil or natural gas. The combustion gases travel countercurrent to the flow of the zinc bearing material. Volatile impurities are carried out of the kiln with the combustion gases and a small portion of the finely divided feed material. The gases are cooled and the larger solid particles are separated from the stream before the resultant fume is collected in a conventional cloth filter baghouse. The fume collected can be further processed by conventional wet processes for the recovery of metallic values such as lead and cadmium. In order to nodulize the calcine properly it is elevated to a point of incipient fusion. The agglomerated material falling from the kiln is cooled and then sized by passing through a screening and crushing system consisting of a jaw crusher and a roll crusher in closed circuit with a vibrating screen.

THE term "segregation," as here used, means the separation of certain natural resources into groups, consisting of one or more members, with the idea that when thus segregated, each group may be more easily and effectively administrated. We may, for example, consider surface rights as distinct from underground rights, and stop there; or we may go further, and deal separately with timber, water, and agricultural rights, or, going underground, we might deal separately with such groups as precious and base metals, clay, oil, gas, etc. The present paper contemplates only the separation so far as practicable, for administrative purposes, of surface from mineral rights. "Classification," in this paper, has reference to the groups into which the government has divided, is dividing, or will hereafter divide its natural resources; first, into the broad classes of mineral and agricultural lands; and, second, into coal, oil, phosphate, brine lands, etc., the central idea being the separation into natural groups for the purpose of simplifying administration and for the purpose of encouraging maximum development and minimum waste. The two subjects are in some respects quite distinct, but as my argument develops, I think it will be obvious why they are discussed in the same paper.

As in the case of steel and the non-ferrous alloys in general, the use of the microscope in connection with the manufacture of malleable cast iron has proved of inestimable value to the industry. Had its use not been invoked, many facts either would not be known at all or, if suspected, would be confined to the realms of conjecture. No fairer statement could be made than that the start of real progress in the industry was coincident with the application of metallography to the product, though the full significance of this statement can hardly be appreciated except by those who not only are conversant with conditions as they existed at the time referred to, but are familiar with the character of works' practice at the present time.. A few years ago, about the only test made to ascertain the physical properties of the product, except in the case of certain plants, was the bending of a casting to destruction, not only with the object of discovering whether or not the metal was ductile, but for the purpose of inspecting the fracture. The characteristics of the fracture, if correctly interpreted, were known to be of value in locating the trouble in castings that were inferior. In general, it was found that if a casting of medium or heavy section would bend through a wide angle before failure took place, the fracture in the majority of cases would have a black velvety appearance; while if it was held at different angles to the direction of the rays of light, it would show a change of color and an iridescent sheen. But an inferior air-furnace heat or anneal might yield castings which, if thin and consequently largely decarburized, could be bent double on themselves and still not possess the fracture described. If, on the other hand, a casting broke short, its fracture might have one of a great many different color and structural peculiarities. Depending on the cause of the trouble, such castings might have any of the fracture characteristics, of which the following is but a partial list.
