An abstract of a paper from the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin of August 1978 by E. Stamboliadis, J. McHardy, T. M. Salman, Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, states that: “The recovery of gold, silver and other heavy metal cyanides from mill solutions is technically possible using the ion exchange technique. However, the costs involved are greater than the costs of the zinc precipitation technique used for gold recovery. There are two main reasons for this: one, the fact that in gold ore cyanidation metal cyanides other than gold and silver occupy most of the resin capacity and hence reduce the adsorption efficiency of the resin for the Au and Ag cyanides; secondly, the high cost of the eluting agents.” Resin, therefore, cannot in most cases be efficiently used for recovery of precious metals. With copper in solution, only 1.47% of the resin capacity is used for gold and 0. 8970 for silver; the rest is occupied by unwanted metal cyanides, such as copper occupying 73.7%. On the other hand, although activated carbon will adsorb copper cyanides, they will be preferentially displaced by gold and silver cyanides. Ion exchange is by one or two orders of magnitude more expensive than the conventional method of zinc precipitation. The cost of removing impurities, such as copper from the resin, is greater than the cost of recovering gold. With an oxide ore amenable to cyanidation and with a low content of other metals, such as may occur with some of the Soviet gold deposits, ion exchange would be an efficient as Carbon-In-Pulp.

THE history of the development of the strip in- dustry, mentioned in this paper, was covered in considerable detail by Stephen Badlam in his paper presented. before the American Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in New York last October. The description of progress in rolling strip there out-lined will be found good reading by anyone interested in the subject. Quoting from Mr. Badlam's paper, "For practically thirty years, we find no record of the use of the backing-roll principle, until in 1916 the Lukens Steel Co., Coatesville, Pa., put in a 206-in. plate mill of the four-high type. This was a reversing mill with two 32-in. working rolls and two 50-in. backing rolls and is today making the widest and heaviest plate made anywhere in the world." The functioning of this mill, though rolling hot plate, is, on account of the extreme width and thinness of plate rolled, quite comparable to the rolling of wide strip either hot or cold and was a considerable factor in demonstrating the marked advantages available with the four-high or backing-roll mill for thin accurate rolling. As the writer has brought out, a demand for a product, the rolling of which required the character-istics of the backing-roll mill, was broached by the In-ternational Nickel Co. This resulted in an inquiry of March, 1924, for the building of a mill capable of cold-rolling wide nickel and monel metal sheets or strip, as mentioned. It may be of some interest to note, that whereas the .six-roll cluster mill with plain bearings was built for this installation, the mill designed by the United En-gineering and Foundry Co. for this inquiry was of the four-high type with roller bearings on the backing-roll necks, being essentially the same design as the four-high roller-bearing mill built in 1925 for the Rome Brass & Copper Co. This Rome mill, to quote again from Mr. Badlam's paper, "fulfilled every requirement, and was the model on which succeeding mills of this type were built."

This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.

TO WE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-The following report covers briefly some of the more important activities of the Institute during the year 1923. In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923. Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business. For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls. During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I. M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American countries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership. Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask for reinstatement. Having stated the darkest side of the picture first, it may now be drawn to your attention that in spite of these losses the number of persons applying for membership was decidedly encouraging. It is a pleasure for me to keynote this first Western Regional Minerals and Coal Conference here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is pleasing for two main reasons. First, Homestake Mining Company has been associated with the Black Hills since 1875 when gold was discovered following Custer's trek through the Hills during 1874. Second, the future mineral development of the Black Hills will depend, to a great extent, on minerals and metals covered in this conference. The metals and minerals that are featured in this conference have unique similarities--and important differences--and therefore, will be of great interest to all who are involved in our industry in this area of the country. Precious metals have always been, and likely will always be, subject to political influence; they are only partially affected by the demands of our industrial economy. Energy minerals, while more directly affected by industrial stimulus, are also politically sensitive. In this regard, the need for a minerals policy affecting the energy sphere has been made very clear to us in the last five years. More importantly, the lack of a national policy and purpose relating to our total future energy needs has severely affected the overall economy and security of this country. Very briefly today, I would like to outline for you my thoughts on the future of these most important minerals. I will start by a discussion of precious metals, primarily my favorite precious metal, gold. A brief history of gold will be helpful in setting a perspective for forecasting its future although it is difficult to give a brief description of a metal that has been prized by man for over 6,000 years. Both conventional and nonconventional process alternatives for gold recovery from cyanide heap leach solutions are discussed in terms of possible flowsheets. Conventional process alternatives include carbon adsorption and zinc dust precipitation, while nonconventional process alternatives include resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. These strategies for gold recovery are compared on the basis of technological features and on the basis of process economics: Review of the technology status and process economics suggests that improvements for conventional process alternatives are possible and that further development of nonconventional process alternatives is warranted.

The Industrial Minerals Div., of the AIME meeting scheduled for Nova Scotia Sept. 8-12, 1953, promises to be one of the outstanding gatherings ever attended by the group. Complementing the educational value of technical sessions will be the superb fishing, boating, golfing, and tennis facilities. [ ] Sponsor of the meeting is the Nova Scotia Mining Society. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Industrial Minerals Div., AIME have been invited to participate. The land immortalized by Longfellow's poem, Evangeline, still contains much of the forest primeval-enough to make it a wonderful vacation spot for delegates and their families. Its scenic beauty is almost unmatched in the area north of the border. Quoting from the Nova Scotia tour book; "Nova Scotia, once known as Acadia, is 374 miles long, from 600 to 100 miles wide ... Excepting the Isthmus of Chignecto, 17.5 miles wide, the province is entirely surrounded by water, no portion being more than 50 miles from the sea . . . has 4625 miles of coastline, guarded by 356 lighthouses and fog alarms. The province is renowned for its picturesque coastline, its harbors dotted with islands, its deep valleys and multitude of beautiful lakes." A progress report on the plans for the meeting will be made monthly. Thus far, technical sessions will be held at Keltic Lodge, Ingonish, N. S. The lodge will also be the starting point for many of the field trips and social events which are in various stages of planning and development.

Portions of this paper repeat in substance the statements made by me in an address before the meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, held in June, 1903, at Delaware Water Gap, Pa. The views I then expressed, I still hold and believe to be pertinent to the present discussion of this subject. In doing my part, therefore, at the request of our Secretary, towards the further consideration by the Institute of the Physics of Cast-lron from a commercial as well as a theoretical standpoint,—a theme which received interesting treatment in our meeting some years ago, but has been somewhat neglected recently,—I make no apology for reiterating the views I have expressed elsewhere. Indications all point to the substitution of classifying pig-iron by chemical analysis for the old-time method of grading by fracture. Commencing with the larger users, and the makers of specialties, who require more positive information as to the composition than is afforded by the fracture; the use of pig-iron, guided by analysis, has spread with much greater rapidity to all classes of foundry-work than the most sanguine expected. Grading by fracture, as guided by experience with any particular brand of iron, has some points in its favor. A discussion of the probable future use of coal for power development involves the study of several basic factors, such as future demand for power, the quantity and availability of fuels in direct competition with coal, the price of coal, and a closely related factor—the efficiency and cost of fuel utilization. Predictions based on purely statistical analyses of past coal consumption have definite limitations. For example, statistics showing the relation between coal utilization and total energy consumption from all sources between the years 1890 to 1930 indicate that during that period the energy consumption per person in the United States increased five times, while the coal consumption per person increased only twice1, and there has been an actual decrease in per capita coal consumption since 1920. Figures such as these, compiled by authentic agencies, emphasize the need for caution in attempting estimates as to the future use of coal, and, incidentally, would seem to offer little basis for optimism in the coal industry. They also suggest the value of analyzing broadly the part played in the past by the related factors of power consumption, competitive fuels, coal prices and the efficiency of utilization. Proper weight must also be given in such a study to the present status and limitations of power-plant developments, arid to the question of what the coal industry itself can do to further its own interests arid influence the consumption of its product.

For a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture of propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods of manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this pratctice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface of each blade must be chipped to the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin of the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days of foundry work and about the same length of time for the machining. Through the use of the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity with any particular propeller-wheel design.

The first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW), principally household waste, for resource recovery is usually shredding. A trommel has been investigated as a step to precede shredding. This way abrasive inorganic materials, such as stones and metals, would be removed prior to shredding, thus lowering the amount of feed and hence maintenance on the shredder. In addition, friable materials such as glass would be removed in large pieces, rather than pulverized too mall to process for recovery. The utility of a trommel for these purposes was investigated on a pilot scale using a unit 9 ft diam by 10 ft long with 4-in. square clear openings. Experimental results indicate that up to approximately half of the MSW may be removed as -4-in. material prior to shredding. The -4-in. fraction contains approximately 70% of the metals and 95% of the glass present in the MSW feed to the unit. Scale-up and cost information necessary for the design of a 60 to 70 tph unit is developed.

T HE creep behavior of many polycrystalline metals at moderate stresses can be described by the empirical relationship: where Em is the minimum creep rate, A is a constant, a is the applied stress, E is the average elastic modulus at the test temperature, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient.&apos; This equation is generally applicable for strain rates of less than around 10-5 per sec and temperatures greater than about one-half the melting point in absolute units. Under these conditions atomic mobility plays an important role in the deformation process, and steady-state creep occurs when a dynamic equilibrium is reached between the generation and recovery of dislocation substructure. Although several theoretical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the creep of polycrystalline solids,2"4 the dislocation climb model2 is in accord with most experimental observations. The majority of creep data used to develop Eq. [1] came from metals with either the fcc or hcp crystal structures. However, on the basis of results for a and 7 iron as well as those for a and a thallium, Sherby concluded that the high-temperature deformation behavior of close-packed metals and bcc metals is probably the same.&apos; The greater creep resistance of fcc and hcp metals and alloys on a relative temperature scale was attributed to lower diffusivities in the close-packed structures. To further compare the creep properties of fcc, hcp, and bcc metals, creep data for all six bcc refractory metals were analyzed according to Eq. [I]. The results are shown in Fig. 1. The sources of information for the quantities used to prepare this figure are listed in Table I, except for high-temperature elastic moduli. The latter data were obtained from Refs. 28 and 29. The dashed lines in the figure represent the range and breadth of data analyzed by Sherby for fcc and hcp metals. In general, the deformation behavior of all of the refractory metals, ex- cept possibly that of tungsten, can be represented by Eq. [1]. This correlation is strong evidence of the similarity that exists between creep of pure close-packed metals and creep of pure bcc metals. At (Em/D) < 108, the results of Flagella and Tarr on tungsten (W-1 in Fig. 1) agree with the five-power stress law, while those of Green (W-5 in Fig. 1) show a seven-power stress dependence. Where (Em/D) > 108, the stress exponents for other data on tungsten were in the range 10 to 15. It is possible that the creep rate dependence on stress in this region is not a power law but exponential (i.e., Em - eßo). However, it was not feasible to differentiate between these two cases because of the steep slope and scatter in the data. Note the inflection point in the curve for the data of Flagella and Tarr (W-1 in Fig. 1). The slope of the line changes from 5 to around 10 at Em/D = 108. The breakdown of the fifty-power stress law at high stresses is not uncommon in other metals, and this phenomenon may result from nonequilibrium conditions in the material such as excess lattice vacancies produced by rapid straining.30 The mechanical strength of a polycrystalline metal is related to its microstructure. Attempts to establish the influence of grain size on the creep rate of metals and alloys have led to a wide variety of results. For example, the following effects have been observed: creep rate decreases as grain size increases;31&apos;32 creep rate decreases as grain size decreases;&apos;,33 creep rate is a minimum at some critical grain size and increases with either an increase or decrease in

The war effort has furnished the necessary impetus for better magnesium foundry practice. Four or five years ago, there were but a few formulas in general use for core-sand mixtures for magnesium castings. Certain sands, binders, and inhibitors were specified and the proportions of these materials in each mixture were maintained between very narrow limits. As more and more war industries entered the field, much research was carried out and methods and practices were improved. Magnesium founding is still in a state of flux; therefore it is not uncommon to find one foundry spraying inhibitors on its cores, and another foundry using sand mixtures with incorporated protective agents. The basic core or dry-sand mold mixture for magnesium in use today is compounded with sand, core oil or resin binder, cereal, and moisture. Core oil or resin binder are added for baked strength while the cereal binder and moisture are for green strength. The normal mixtures (based on the weight of the sand) contain from o.5 to 1.5 per cent of both cereal binder and core oil, and the moisture content variesbetween 1.5 and 5 per cent. The ratio of core oil to cereal binder varies from 60:40 to 40:60, while the correct amount of moisture depends upon the method of coremaking. Protective Agents In all magnesium practice, protective agents are used in conjunction with the core and molding sands to prevent oxidation of the metal. The use of these inhibitors is not novel, but publications covering this field are not entirely adequate. Beck1 says: Magnesium alloys decompose water to form magnesium oxide, hydrogen being liberated in the process (Mg + H2O ? H2 ?+ MgO). This reaction results in the blackening of the skin and the appearance of areas of porosity on the casting surface, the cavities of which are filled with a grey oxide powder (these are termed &apos;burns&apos;). Although sand cores for magnesium castings are thoroughly dried during the baking cycle, burning will take place on the casting5 unless the metal is protected properly. This type of burning is more difficult to define than the "water-magnesium" reaction cited by Beckl A possible explanation may lie in the following equation: 2Mg + O2—> 2MgO Here, the source of the oxygen is not water, but the air in the mold cavity, together with the chemically combined oxygen in the core-binding media. Generally, two methods are used to prevent this reaction from taking place.

The $2.1 billion Milwaukee Water Pollution Abatement Program (MWAP) requires the construction of several miles of underground openings at depths up to 350 feet for the conveyance and storage of sewage and storm water overflows. The system will include approximately 27km (17 miles) of deep tunnels ranging from 3m (10 f t.) to 9m (30 f t.) in diameter, 26 shafts and a pumping station cavern. The facilities will be located primarily in Silurian Age dolomites of the Niagara Group. The rock is characterized as competent with vertical to sub-vertical orthogonal jointing and predominantly thin shale bedding planes. The site investigation was carried out incrementally, commencing on an area wide basis, becoming site specific as facility plans were developed. To achieve cost savings through uniformity and continuity, a computerized data bank was established. Software was developed during the initial stages of the program for the production of borehole logs, structure contour maps, geologic profiles and summaries of data for statistical evaluations. This paper discusses in general terms the collection, compilation and presentation of data necessary for the characterization of the rock mass.

A proposed technique for improving coal-mine roof stability by softening parts of coal pillars along the sides of entries developed from structural analysis is presented. This technique is based on the transference of the high stress concentration in the roof near the upper corners of a rectangular opening to the roof rock and coal over the solid away from the opening. This transferral is accomplished by softening parts of the coal pillars by drilling a series of parallel holes into the coal in the ribs and face of the entry prior to advance. The effectiveness of the pillar softening in terms of reducing the opening width (so that the stress in the roof near the corner is equivalent to that of a narrower opening) ranges from 3 to 5 ft for a 16-ft entry using a series of 4 to 5-ft-deep parallel drill holes of 3 to 6-in.-diam on a 1 to 2-ft spacing for a particular geology. Pillar softening should be highly effective in controlling roof where cutter-roof cave conditions exist, because this technique reduces the high stress concentration in the roof at the upper corners of the opening. It may also be effective for reducing tensile roof failure and coal rib sloughing for certain specific geological conditions. This technique appears to be a simple, effective, and practical method that can be used to supplement conventional roof support methods of roof bolting, timbering, roof truss, and other existing methods in underground coal mines. The authors consider the technique feasible and believe that it merits underground trials.

A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1935 must necessarily be brief. As attention of the state government to the oil and gas industry has never included the collection and compilation of statistics on production, either by producing sands, by counties, by fields, or for the state as a whole, such information as requested in Table 1 of this symposium is impossible to secure for this state. In the absence of production data chief attention must be directed to drilling activity for the year. Information such as can be compiled from various sources, including weekly drilling reports to operating companies and trade journals, is given in the following paragraphs with the realization that the data may not be complete in all its details. Drilling Activity by Fields Drilling activity during 1935 was similar to the preceding year in , that the major operating companies were generally content to drill lease-requirement and offset wells and in that comparatively little effort was made to discover new pools. A compilation of completions recorded in weekly reports to drilling companies and in trade journals show 1022 tests completed for the year in 53 counties of the state. Of this total number, 653 wells were commercial producers and 369 were classed as dry holes. Trenton Sand Field Production in the field of Trenton sand, which originally included parts of 15 counties in northwestern Ohio, is now on the decline. Seventy-three completions were reported in this field during 1935, of which 33.8 per cent were dry holes. Activity centered in Allen County with 12 completions, two of which were dry holes; in Hardin County with 11 producers; and in Wyandot County with 12 producers and 2 dry holes.

A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1935 must necessarily be brief. As attention of the state government to the oil and gas industry has never included the collection and compilation of statistics on production, either by producing sands, by counties, by fields, or for the state as a whole, such information as requested in Table 1 of this symposium is impossible to secure for this state. In the absence of production data chief attention must be directed to drilling activity for the year. Information such as can be compiled from various sources, including weekly drilling reports to operating companies and trade journals, is given in the following paragraphs with the realization that the data may not be complete in all its details. Drilling Activity by Fields Drilling activity during 1935 was similar to the preceding year in , that the major operating companies were generally content to drill lease-requirement and offset wells and in that comparatively little effort was made to discover new pools. A compilation of completions recorded in weekly reports to drilling companies and in trade journals show 1022 tests completed for the year in 53 counties of the state. Of this total number, 653 wells were commercial producers and 369 were classed as dry holes.
