The deformation behavior in tension of spheroidized carbon steels was studied at room temperature as a function of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt Pct, and carbide particle size, 0.88 to 2.77 p. It was found that the Hall-Petch strength-grain size relation is directly applicable to the yield and flow stresses of the two lower-carbon steels , 0.065 and 0.30 pct C. The strength data for the medium- and high-carbon steels, 0.55 to 1.46 pct C, also satisfied the Hall-Petch relation, provided that these data are based upon the particle spacing. Beyond 4 pct strain, the flow stress data of all the steels studied could be represented by the same Hall-Petch relation with dinerent spacings for grain boundary and particle strengthening. The behavior of the higher-carbon steels was consistent with the postulated formation of a dislocation cell network during processing and initial deformation (up to 4 pct strain). The cell size was assumed to be equal to the planar particle spacing. The true stress at the ultimate tensile strength was also found to be a function of the particle spacing. At a given temperature and strain rate, the yield and flow stresses of carbon steels depend on the type and dimensions of the microstructure. Starting with the work of Gensamer et al. in 1942,' experimental studies on pearlitic and spheroidized carbon steels revealed that the strength of steels is a function of two main parameters: the ferrite grain size2'3 and the carbide particle spacing;1'4'5 on this basis, two different strengthening mechanisms have been developed to apply to steels of low and high carbon contents, respectively. In polycrystalline iron and mild steels the grain boundaries are regarded as the major structural barriers to slip. The relation between strength and grain size is generally represented by the Hall-Petch equation which is based on a linear proportionality between strength and the inverse square root of the average grain size.2'3y677 However, Gensamer et al.' and Roberts et related the yield strength of medium -and high-carbon steels to the carbide particle spacing alone, and they found a linear relation between the logarithm of the mean free path in the ferrite and the yield strength in both spheroidized and pearlitic steels. By means of the electron microscope, Turkalo and LOW' extended the study to finer structures; they concluded that the logarithmic relation is not valid for the entire range of microstructures unless grain boundaries are also included in the measurement of the mean free path. For the specific case of spheroidized steels, Ansell and aenel' found that the yield strength data,4'5 when plotted as a function of mean free path, fit the Hall-Petch equation; however, T'ysong found that the same data fit the 0rowanl0 relation if a planar inter-particle spacing is used. Recently Kossowsky and ~rown" studied the strength of prestrained spheroidized steels, 0.48 and 0.95 pct C, and concluded that the strength due to the carbide dispersions varies linearly with the reciprocal of the square root of the mean free path between carbide particles and dislocation networks. Such networks were first observed by Turkalo." The conclusion common to all these studies is that the available slip distance in the ferrite is the most important variable in determining strendh. Previous work on carbon steels is restricted to limited composition and strain ranges. The mechanism which governs the flow properties is not clearly understood, and, in particular, little is known about the composition dependence of the transition between grain boundary strengthening and particle hardening. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the strengthening mechanism in spheroidized steels over a wide range of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, and plastic strain, yielding to necking. The spheroidized structure was chosen because of its relative simplicity and the relative ease of control and measurement of the structural parameters. The experimental work is limited to tensile testing at room temperature at constant extension rate. The effects of the carbide particles on the fracture behavior of spheroidized steels are discussed elsewhere.13 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight different grades of vacuum-cast carbon steels were supplied in the form of forged and rolled plate by the Applied Research Laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. The compositions furnished with these steels are given in Table I; the carbon content ranges from 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, or from 1.0 to 22.3 vol pct of carbide. The steel plates were cut transversely into rods a little larger than the test specimens, 1 in. gage length, i in. diam. The rods were austenitized in air (enriched with CO by a consumable carbon-rich muffle) at 50° C above theA, orA., temperature for 2 hr and then quenched in oil with vigorous stirring. The as-quenched rods were tempered in two stages in order to obtain the desired distributions and sizes of carbide particles. The rods were first tempered at 460° C for 10 hr and then at 700" C for periods ranging from 4 hr to 3 days, in vacuum. After final machining, all specimens were vacuum-annealed again at 650°C for 1 hr in order to relieve residual stresses. The tension tests were carried out in two steps. The initial part of the load-strain curve, up to about 2 pct strain, was determined on a Riehle testing machine with an extensometer of small strain range, 4 pct strain, in order to obtain the yield and initial flow piopertiesi As soon as the first part of the test was finished, the specimen was placed in an Instron testing machine equipped with a strain gage extensometer with a maximum strain range of 50 pct. ALTHOUGH the shooting of oil wells for the purpose of increasing production has been practiced since 1866, present-day shooting technique has been arrived at almost wholly by a process of trial and error. The difficulties attending either a theoretical analysis of the problem or an experimental attack become apparent when one actually embarks on a theoretical investigation or attempts to formulate an intelligent experimental program. The literature on the subject consists mainly of descriptions of current practice, scattered eye-witness accounts of events following the shooting of a well, and vague speculations on the mechanical processes involved. In contrast to quarry blasting, the results of oil-well shooting cannot be determined by means of visual inspection, and it is perhaps for this reason that only one attempt at what approaches a direct experimental attack has been reported in the literature.1 In these experiments, charges of liquid nitroglycerin were exploded in holes drilled in a sandstone outcrop. In order to observe the character and extent of the resulting fractures, the rock was blasted away so as to expose the original shot holes. After all this had been done it was found impossible to distinguish the fracturing due to the original shots from that due to the subsequent blasting. The enlargement of the holes due to the pulverizing action of the shots was. measured and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of 'sand tamping. Only five shots were made and few definite conclusions could be drawn. Some small-scale experiments to determine the effect of tamping were performed by Snelling and Hall,2 Small charges (20 grams) of dynamite were detonated at the bottom of a cylindrical hole in a lead block and the resulting enlargement of the hole was taken as a measure of the effectiveness of the explosion. It was found that when the shot was tamped with a sufficient amount of sand or clay, the volume enlargement was approximately double that found when no stemming had been used. The properties of the explosives have been the subject of much study by the manufacturers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and various other agencies. For example, velocities of detonation for many commercial explosives are to be found in the Blasters' Handbook, issued by the Du Pont company. Many other properties are given in a treatise on the subject by Naoum.3 The shock wave that accompanies the detonation of high explosives has been studied photographically by Payman4 and others. The hydrodynamical theory of the shock wave has received much attention, and an extended theoretical treatment is given by Bateman.5 Two aspects of the well-shooting problem will be considered in this paper; namely, the fracturing of subsurface strata, and possible damage to casing. With respect to the former of these, several calculations have been made giving the stresses in the rocks surrounding the shot. THE ECONOMIC THEORY It will assist in the understanding of the Resource Rent Tax ("RRT") proposals in Australia if the economic theory behind the tax is briefly explained. The idea goes back to the concept of rent put forward by the nineteenth century economist David Ricardo. His analysis was broadly as follows: A tenant who farms land which is just on the margin of economic viability cannot afford to pay his landlord any rent, because the value of the crop produced by such marginal land is equal to the cost of producing the crop, plus the cost of keeping the tenant alive. There is nothing left out of which to pay rent to landlord. A tenant who farms good land can afford to pay his landlord rent -- but the maximum amount of rent that he can be asked to pay is the excess of the value of the crop produced by the good land over the cost of producing the crop and of keeping the tenant alive. Adapting this theory to the taxation of mining projects, modern economists who favour this system of taxation say that a profitable mining (or resource) project produces rent in the Ricardian sense. The amount of the rent is the excess of the profits by the project over the amount of profit which is required to attract the taxpayer to invest in the project in the first place. This explains why the tax is called "Resource Rent Tax". PAPUA NEW GUINEA PRECEDENT Although Papua New Guinea ("PNG") is now independent of Australia, there are still close links between the two countries, and strong similarities between their respective tax regimes. PNG introduced an Additional Profits Tax ("APT") in 1978. In many respects, Australia's RRT proposals follow the precedent set by PNG1s APT. However, in practical terms, not a great deal can be learned at this stage from PNG's experiences since, according to the writer's understanding, no PNG mining project has yet paid any APT. The Bougainville mine is not liable to APT, being subject to tax under its own separate Act, which contains a different formula. Outline of PNG Additional Profits Tax. PNG has two versions of Additional Profits Tax ("APT) - one applying to general mining, the other to petroleum mining. The two versions are very similar. The general mining version is described below. The tax applies on a licence by licence basis. This means that losses on Licence A cannot be offset against profits on Licence B. Expenditure relating to two or more licences, is apportioned "in such manner as the Chief Controller thinks reasonable". Tax is levied on the "accumulated value of net cash receipts" at the rate of (70 - n)% where n=the rate of income tax. The accumulated value of net cash receipts ("av") is calculated as follows: Calculations commence from the first year in which substantial expenditure was incurred on the construction of facilities for the carrying out of mining operations on the licence. For that year the av consists of the total allowable expenditure to date on that lease. For the second year, the av is the av at the end of year one indexed in accordance with the statutory formula set out below, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 2. For year 3, the av is the av at the end of year 2 adjusted by the index factors, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 3. This process is repeated year after year. When the licence starts to earn revenue, the revenue is deducted from total allowable expenditure for that year. If revenue exceeds total allowable

Leach liquors derived from the processing of nickel ores are generally highly contaminated and contain appreciable free acid. Methods are described for obtaining a commercial grade of concentrate from such solutions using pyrrhotite as the seed material to abstract nick- el, cobalt, etc. from solution. At temperatures in excess of 160° C., recoveries of 99% can be obtained from contaminated solutions where the free acidity is as high as 0.5 M in sulphuric acid. At lower temperatures down to 80° C., high recoveries can also be obtained either by adding H2S to the system with appropriate adjustment of the free acidity or by using "activated" pyrrhotite or artificial FeS in the system without prior addition of H2S. The methods are applicable to liquors derived from either oxide or sulphide ores, and the products are suitable for smelting or other known processes used to obtain pure metals. The mechanism of the reaction appears to vary with the operating temperature, and the results ye therefore discussed in the light of electron probe and optical microscopic studies.

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. In this paper, literature relating to this process as well as literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates is reviewed. Some important articles are discussed and speculations made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

NUMEROUS experiments in the past few years have proven that void formation occurs quite generally in the diffusion zone of bimetal specimens1-4 The phenomenon has been explained in terms of the accumulation of lattice vacancies resulting from unequal diffusion of the constituents and their eventual precipitation as holes.= Attention has recently been directed to the fact that voids also form within homogeneous metals during high-temperature creep.' The idea has been put forward that these voids form by the condensation of excess lattice vacancies generated by intersecting dislocations.".' If the precipitation of lattice vacancies from solution is treated as a nucleation and growth process, the predicted vacancy concentration for homogeneous nucleation of voids at an observable rate is 100 to 1000 times the normal thermal equilibrium concentration. It appears that voids actually form during diffusion at vacancy supersaturations which are much lower than this8 According to the calculations of Machlin,' the same must be true for voids formed in homogeneous metals during creep, if these are considered to arise from the precipitation of lattice vacancies. Therefore, if the vacancy mechanism is valid, it seems that the holes which form in diffusion and creep specimens are heterogeneously nucleated by imperfections or impurities in the metal. Irregularities in the frequency and distribution of voids in diffusion couples bear out this explanation.' , It is not known at the present time what the nuclei are on which vacancies condense. Various investigators have speculated that they could be certain dislocation configurations, already existing voids produced during solidification or working, gas pockets, or inclusions in the metal. Relatedly, the precise value of the degree of vacancy supersatura-tion for void nucleation is still uncertain. An initial attempt to estimate this value from diffusion data, made by Balluffi, indicated that voids form in diffusion couples at vacancy concentrations which may

This paper brings within the compass of one comparatively brief article a general description of the situation concerning the nation's water resources. It touches upon the phenomenal growth in the demand for water supply and emphasizes the problems facing the coal industry both with regard to acid mine water drainage discharged from active and abandoned mines and the suspended solids discharged to the stream system from wet coal preparation plants. IT must always be remembered, with regard to the problem of water-borne industrial wastes, that stream pollution from any cause is just one factor in the comprehensive problem of water supply in modern times. Industries nonexistent 25 years ago are now flourishing, and supplies of water piped to homes and apartments, as well as the greater number of plumbing fixtures per dwelling and per building, have created an ever growing demand on the country's water resources. Indication of this rapid growth in demand is shown in Table I, which is quoted from Abrams. of Texas increased 287% and the water consumption 7000 per cent." The domestic load varies greatly, depending on the extent of the available supply and the habits of the community. According to the report of the President's Water Resources Policy Commission' the United States Public Health Service reported a national average of 127 gal per capita per day, varying from 60 gal in communities of 500 persons to 140 or 150 gal in cities of 10,000 or over. Other critical areas may be cited to illustrate the inter-relation between new industrial processes and the demands for water in the area where the new enterprise is located. Powell and Wilson have pointed out that during World War 11, in the vicinity of Louisville, Ky., a rapid expansion of industry took place, consisting of numerous synthetic rubber plants. The demand for water increased from 37 million gal per day in 1937 to 62 million gal in 1943. These heavy requirements drew down the supply stored in the water-bearing aquifers to such an extent that urgent plans for recharging were considered. Similar situations have developed in the Los Angeles area and in the vicinity of Texas City. Warne4 has drawn attention to the situation in Los Angeles area, where in the West Basin the withdrawal of ground water in 1945 was 90,000 acre-ft, almost double the amount of the natural fresh water recharge. The draw down has been so severe that the level of the ground water is now below sea level, and sea water is invading the West Basin aquifers at rates up to 300 ft per year. In the Report of the Engineers Joint Council it is pointed out that in the area of Texas City the ground water table has been critically lowered. This paper presents a combined analytical and experimental study of chisel penetration vs time during chisel impact on rock, a problem of fundamental importance in improving the performance of roller-cone bits or percussion drilling toots. For a given force-time relationship between chisel and rock, the problem of determining the penetration (displacement) vs time of the chisel is formidable. This is so because the rock is a nonlinear system with distributed mass and distributed damping (friction, dissipation of energy due to rupture, etc.). Since the literature does not contain adaptable solutions, the rock behavior to impact was simulated approximately by an "equivalent" lumped system, that is, an "equivalent" mass, spring, dashpot system. With this assumption, an analytical solution was found for chisel penetration vs time due to a sinusoidal load between chisel and rock. From this solution were found curves, in terms of dimension-less variables, for the maximum depth of penetration vs the frequency of the sinusoidal loading and for the energy transfer vs frequency. The results of this analysis were used to predict the penetration rate of rotary rock bits us rotary speed. The curve indicated that an optimum speed exists. To verify this analysis, an experimental apparatus was constructed and used to apply a sinusoidal pulse to a chisel penetrating a rock specimen under atmospheric conditions. Strain gauges were mounted on the chisel shank and a velocity transducer was mounted between the chisel and the rock surface. The velocity was integrated electrically and picked up simultaneously with the strain gauge signal on an oscilloscope. Permanent records were made photographically to provide simultaneous records of force us time and penetration us time. In comparing the experimental results for limestone and dolomite with the theoretical results, good agreement was found in the frequency range of the experiments. Unfortunately, the inertia effect (peak penetration) indicated by the theory occurs at a frequency much higher than could be obtained experimentally with the apparatus constructed. A "rate-of-loading" effect is indicated theoretically, but has not yet been verified experimentally. INTRODUCTION The process of drilling with percussion tools or rotary rock bits is basically related to the transient response of rock to surface impact. Each time a bit tooth contacts the rock, high stresses are developed which result in penetration and rock removal. As the tooth moves on, stresses are relieved and a new cycle begins as the next tooth contacts the rock. Thus the drilling process, which consists of an endless succession of these cycles, can be studied in terms of a single cycle. It is apparent, therefore, that the study of single-chisel impact on rock is fundamentally important in improving the performance of roller-cone and percussive-type drills. Previous studies in this area have been conducted by Simon1 and Hartman2 by means of drop tests. In these tests a chisel was attached to a weight and allowed to fall, due to the force of gravity, so that the chisel was driven into a rock specimen upon impact. Strain gauges were attached to the chisel shank and the resulting force-vs-time curves were recorded photographically from an oscilloscope screen. The depth of penetration and crater dimensions were also measured. These tests have provided much valuable information but, as mentioned by the investigators, have not provided complete information on the effect of "rate of loading'! This is partly due to the fact that the chisel motion during drop tests is not a controlled motion which can be varied in form and frequency. Therefore, it seemed that additional information could be obtained by studying chisel impact under conditions where both the motion and the frequency of loading could be controlled. Tmzsile tests were performed on Armco iron samples, at various ternpe.ralures and strain rates, ocer a wide range of grain sizes. Analysis of the data suggests that the plot of the lower yield stress, against d-1/2,where 2d is the acerage grain diameter, is not linear (as is often assumed) but is concave toward the d. axis over the range of d-from 7 to 53 . The different values of the parameters obtained by other workers can be explained, in part at least, by the observed curvature. This curvalure is shown to be consistent with a model of yielding based on dislocation pile-ups; however, the values of obtained by fitting our data to this model differ appreciably from the values generally reported. The equation proposed by Cottrell, viz.: is a plausible empirical fit to the experimental results. The purpose of this paper is to comment on the validity of the widely used linear relationship first proposed by all' and Petch and coworkers2"4 between ay, the lower yield stress, and 2d, the average grain diameter, for bcc metals, viz.: Many workers, see Refs. 2 to 7 and Table 11, have fitted this equation to their experimental results and have obtained acceptable fits over the relatively narrow range of grain sizes used by most of them. Indeed, in some cases, so few data points were available that any more sophisticated fit would have been irrational. In most of the interpretations,'-' oi is thought to be a measure of the friction stress accompanying dislocation movement, and ky was originally inter- preted as a measure of the dislocation locking but is now believed by Cottrell" to be a function of the dislocation creation rate. In the "unpinning" theories, k, is equated to where od is the unpinning stress and 1 is the average distance from the boundary of the grain where yielding is taking place to the nearest dislocation source in an unyielded grain. Other considerations (see, for example, Refs. 11 and 12) lead to equations with a similar form to [I] where different meanings may be attributed to the parameters. While there are doubts as to the physical significance of the parameters i and k, they continue to be used by many workers; interpretations of the variations in the behavior of ferrite materials following certain treatments, e.g., aging,'3 neutron irradiation,14 have been given frequently in terms of these parameters. Some theories of the mechanical behavior of bcc metals are based on this relationship. We have investigated experimentally the oy - d-'lZ relationship for Armco iron over a wider range of grain sizes and with more data points than those given in published results. The analysis of our data suggests that the oy—d-'" relationship is not linear but is in fact concave towards the d-'I2 axis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental work was carried out on 3-mm-diam Armco iron rods which were prepared by wire drawing from 5-mm-diam rods. By annealing in vacuum at temperatures between 7000 and 1200°C for various times, grain sizes from 7 to 20,000 grains per sq mm were obtained, the grains in all cases being regularly shaped. Grain sizes were measured by lineal interceptand by area methods; only specimens with Amax/A values of 3 to 6 were used in the Petch-Hall plots (where A is the average area of a grain and Amax is the area of the largest grain observed). For all the specimens used, the number of grains in a cross section exceeded 50, which should be adequate to avoid grain size effects.'= Tensile tests were performed at 296", 219, and 17l°K, using

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

Bauxite is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and in the production of a number of useful chemicals as well as of aluminous cement "ciment fondu." An important and growing use is in the manufacture of refractory products. Composition Dana and earlier mineralogists gave the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.21120 and the composition as A1202, 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. A specific mineral of this composition has, however, never been identified by either microscopic, chemical or X ray examination, and therefore it is concluded that bauxite is a rock consisting of one or more aluminum minerals together with impurities. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203. 3H20 (A1203, 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1202, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct) ; diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1203, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mediterranean region in Europe is predominantly boehmite, as in France and Istria, subordinately a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, as in Dalmatia, or of boehmite (or gibbsite) and diaspore, as in Greece. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite, but boehmite in appreciable amount occurs in many places. Corundum (A1202) is not included un¬der bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities in variable amount, including silica in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloy site, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulfide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous, ferruginous, and phosphatic bauxite and siliceous and aluminous iron ores and manganese ores and nickel and chrome laterites. Phosphorus and manganese minerals locally form important impurities in bauxite deposits. Properties Gibbsite is white or light shades of gray, cream or pink. Its hardness is 2.5 to 3.5; specific gravity, 2.3 to 2.4; crystal system, monoclinic, crystals tabular parallel to 001, often fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic; luster, vitreous to pearly; generally translucent; cleavage, parallel to 001; disassociation temperature, approximately 300°C. Boehmite, a relatively new and important mineral described by J. Boehm15 in 1925, confirmed and named by J. de Lapparen64 in 1930, has some properties not yet definitely determined. Austenitic stainless alloys are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking which may occur under certain corrosion environments irrespective of their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Test samples are described for investigating stress-corrosion susceptibility of alloys for industrial equipment. A laboratory test using a solution of magnesium chloride boiling at 309 F. was found to produce transgranular cracks in several alloys investigated and in types 347 and 316 stainless steel tubing a residual stress of the order of 10,000 psi. was observed to initiate cracking. The susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking as judged by the boiling magnesium chloride test indicates that alloys may be selected which will withstand a high stress in service Stressed specimens of stainless alloys included in a corrosion testing program will aid in determining the acceptibility of these fabricated alloys, when stressed, to the service conditions.

LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes. The rolling texture transition in copper as a function of deformation temperature is found to be quite similar to that in high-purity silver. The ordinary copper type texture changes gradually to the brass type, accompanied by an increase in the stacking fault frequency, as the temperature of deformation decreases. The rolling textures obtained at low temperatures and the corresponding annealing textures compare remarkably well with the ordinary rolling and annealing textures of low-zinc brasses. Furthermore, it is also found that the observed stacking fault energies of copper specimens deformed at low temperatures correspond closely with those of low-zinc brasses, as deduced from measurements of the dislocation nodes. These results are consistent with the idea that texture transition may be significantly dependent on the stacking fault energy. It was shown in a series of previous publications1"3 that the rolling texture of high-purity silver changes gradually from the common silver type (or the brass type) to the copper type* with increasing temperature *The silver or brass type rolling textures are commonly described as (110)[112],4,5 whereas the copper type rolling textures are mainly (123) [a121 and (146)[211].5 Other ideal orientations have been used by various investigators for the copper type rolling textures, but the actual difference among these ideal orientations is rather small. of deformation, and that such texture transition can be correlated with the change in stacking fault frequency as a function of rolling temperature. Furthermore, it was shown that the formation of annealing textures in high-purity silver from the various rolling textures obtained during the course of texture transition depends entirely upon the deformation texture. From a common silver type or brass type rolling texture (such as produced by rolling at 0" or at 50° C) the recrystallization texture is mainly (120)[211], which is quite different from the recrystallization texture of brass.* However, for both ma- terials the orientation relationship between the rolling texture and the recrystallization texture can be expressed in terms of similar rotations around [Ill.] axes of approximately 30 or 35 deg. They differ in that the [Ill] rotational axes are different. In the case of high-purity silver, the axes of rotation are the two (111) poles near the plane normal of the deformed specimen with a (11l)[112] type rolling texture, whereas in brass, they are the (111) poles near the direction of rolling. For high-purity silver with a predominantly copper type rolling texture (such as produced by rolling at 150° or 200°C) the recrystallization texture is mainly (100)[001], or the cube texture, plus its twin orientations. It was shown previously6 that such reorientation observed in copper or aluminum can be described as [Ill] rotations of 30 to 40 deg.
