In making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such i~nportant factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise12 and L. Sterner-Rainer2 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by 1/4 by 3/4-in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previots paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the 1/16-in. ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, % by 2 by 0.045 in., is blanked from a skip using a die, and the weight loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 1/2 hr. of actual submersion of the test picce in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300" F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. Thc "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclination, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oil fields of which the city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near. Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

Although enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co, started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high-grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania Internacional Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corpn. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill. Methods All of these mills use sodium sulfide for filming the oxide minerals, with the possible exception of the North Peru mill, and all use oily reagents. The total tonnage of strictly oxidized lead-silver ores concentrated by flotation is probably less than 2500 tons daily. The following figures give the various types of ores being treated:

The permeability of an oil or gas sand is its capacity for transmitting fluids, either liquids or gases, under pressure. The permeability of a sand depends upon the size and shape of the openings in it and the extent to which these communicate with one another, as well as upon the ratio of their volume to the total volume of the sand. The apparatus employed and the method of procedure used by the authors in conducting the permeability tests have been described in a previous pub1ication.l For the tests described here 1/2-in. cubes were used. They were set in the lower end of a 1-in. union, inserted in a square hole cut in a hard rubber stopper which fitted into the lower end of the union. In the tests with air, volumes were measured with a wet American gas meter of 100 cu. ft. capacity. In those with water, distilled water at room temperature was employed, unless otherwise noted. DescRiption of Sands Tested The tests described in this paper were performed upon 18 samples representing typical oil and gas sands from 7 localities in northwestern Pennsylvania. For purposes of identification, the cores from which the samples came have been designated by capital letters, the sequence of the samples in the cores by numerals, and the individual cubes by small letters. All cubes from the same samples came from adjacent portions parallel to the bedding. Core A of the Bradford sand came from the north central part of the Bradford field, from an area where water-flooding operations have proved highly successful. Core B of the same sand was obtained from the southern part of the field. This core contained a so-called "loose streak," 7.5 ft. thick, in the middle portion of which B2 is a representative sample. The "loose streak" has given trouble in water-flooding but responded favorably to an air-drive, using a pressure of 300 lb. The natural production was increased approximately five times over a period of three years in which the air-drive was in operation. Core C, also of the Brad-

Kansas produced approximately 35,434,000 bbl. of oil in 1932 compared to 37,018,000 bbl. in 1931, a decrease of 1,584,000 bbl. or 4.2 per cent. These figures do not indicate the amount of oil that could have been made available from the state for the year. Many of the fields discovered during the year and some discovered in previous years were entirely shut in. Practically all flush production discovered within the last two years has been prorated in some manner or other. Probation Kansas production is under regulation as specified in House Bill 387, passed by the legislature in 1931, which became effective when published May 28, 1931. The principal features of the law are the prohibition of waste, including gas energy, the regulation and prevention of discrimination of purchasers, the marketing of oil ratably from wells in each field when the daily production is above 15 bbl. per well. This act gives the enforcing powers to the Public Service Commission. The Commission, having many other regulatory duties, appointed an Oil Advisory Committee, which, with the aid of the State Umpire, keeps records and makes recommendation for orders as to specific regulation of fields and conditions in each field. At the time the Commission was given authority to regulate production and marketing in flush fields, several of these had already been under voluntary proration and marketing restrictions by agreement of the operators. These gradually came under the control of the Commission by mutual consent. It is the policy of the Public Service Commission to follow the will of the operators so long as they do not have ideas or plans in conflict with the law. The cost of administration of this law is assessed against the operators according to the amount of oil taken from the fields in which ratable taking is necessary. There is a feeling that the whole state should share this expense, which is small, since it is beneficial to the older fields by assuring them 100 per cent market for their output by restricting the flush fields.

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse. VAIONT RESERVOIR SLIDE Fig. 1 shows Vaiont Dam in Italy which is a double curvature arch, 875 ft high, located on a tributary of the Piave River, north and west of Venice. When completed in 1960 it was the highest arch dam in the world. In 1960 a sizable landslide (some 700,000 cu yd) occurred on the left abutment a short distance above the dam. Following this, the reservoir was held down for construction of a by-pass tunnel through the right valley wall to insure connection with the upper end of the reservoir in event of further slides. In October 1963 a giant landslide occurred on the left valley wall, over a width of some 14 miles (see Fig. 2). Over 300 million cu yd slid into the reservoir, displacing the water and forming a hige wave 700 ft above the top of the dam as it hit the opposite, or right, wall of the valley. The wave then passed some 500 ft over top of the dam, followed down the tortuous winding canyon and debouched into the

The Ottawa river, the northeastern boundary of the Province of Ontario, and the dividing line between the latter and the Province of Quebec, has long been famous for the rafts of timber floated over its waters from the depths of the forest, and other poets besides Moore, have immortalized its beauties in verse. But with the ad vent of the railway which now pierces the forest solitudes, the days of rafting were numbered ; and the boat song is now heard no more on "Ottawa's tide," or at such long intervals only, that, when heard, it seems an echo of the past. The lumber trade is fast leav ing Ottawa City, the old headquarters of the business; and such square timber as is now cut is gradually finding other outlets than shipment to Great Britain, and other channels of transportation than the Ottawa river. Skirting the northern shore of this great river runs a vast chain of hills, assuming at times the altitude of mountains. Their geological character marks them as remnants of the earliest land of this conti nent. Following the course of the St. Lawrence from the Gulf of that name to the confluence of the river with the Ottawa, the course of which latter they then pursue, the range has been styled " the Lau rentians." Rolling in long undulations, with rounded, rather than rugged or pointed summits, they leave a margin of 8 or 10 miles, dipping in a gentle slope to the water's edge, rich for agricultural use, and dotted here and there with farms and settlements. Beyond this margin bold hills stretch northerly to blue mountains, rich in iron, lead, plumbago, and other minerals. The Apatite District.—One of these minerals is apatite, or phos phate of lime, the use of which as a material for the manufacture of superphosphate as a fertilizer has become the basis of the industry bidding Fair to prove ere long one of the chief elements of Canadian trade. So rapid has been the growth of this new industry that if the lumber business were to disappear from this mineral district, its void would be filled by that which has sprung up in connection with phosphate.

SOME mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a ques-tion of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will, attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Tech-nically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing border-line ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composi-tion and presenting widely divergent physical properties. This paper sets forth the results of a microscopic study of a type of borderline ore from the Tintic district that is now being treated by direct smelting. A

THE subject of recrystallization and grain growth has been much studied and the literature on this subject is numerous. Such studies have been mostly carried out by metallographic examination of X ray methods. Since recrystallization and grain growth involve elementary atomic processes, their mechanism can best be elucidated by a study of some properties which can be readily traced back in terms of such atomic processes. Prior to a detailed quantitative study, however, it is necessary to explore first the possibility and practicability of utilizing any particular property for obtaining the desired information. We have pointed out in a preceding article' that the internal friction of cold-worked metals is extremely high during recrystallization and it drops abru~tlv once the recrystallization is complete. ~reviois work has also shown that the viscosity of grain boundaries in a recrystallized specimen at a given temperature is raised by grain growth.' It seems thus that the measurements of internal friction may furnish a useful tool for the study of the mechanism of recrystallization and grain growth in terms of elementary atomic processes. The purpose of this paper is to report results of a study along this line. We will demonstrate that the internal friction method does give results in agreement with those furnished by conventional metallographic examinations. Once such a correlation has been established, we will be in a position to take further steps to achieve new information which cannot be achieved by conventional methods. The measurements of internal friction were made using apparatus and procedures similar to those used in the preceding article. All the measurements were made under such a small stress level that the internal friction is independent of stress level. The frequency of vibration is, unless mentioned otherwise, about one cycle per second in all cases. Internal Friction and Recrystallization Complete Recrystallization Temperature: Fig. 1 shows the internal friction curve during annealing of a few metals: aluminum, alpha brass and iron. These curves were determined in the following manner. In the curve for aluminum, internal friction measurements were performed upon. 99.991 aluminum subjected to 95 pct reduction area. ALTHOUGH a few engineers have recognized the problem of the mechanism of filtration it has never been studied in a quantitative way. A background for a better understanding will be afforded by a survey of certain fundamental principles of filtration. In recent years, authorities have become practically unanimous in saying that the actual filtering should be done, not by the cloth itself, but by a layer of solid particles deposited upon it. Thus, a cloth may be used in which the openings are considerably larger than the particles to be filtered, provided that groups of particles form an arch or bridge over each opening. This can be accomplished if the initial pressure is so low that the arch will not be broken while it is still thin. According to Wright,1 the chief advantage of this method of filtration is that the open-weave cloth does not become clogged as easily as does one of closer weave, where the fine particles often work their way into the interior of the cloth and become caught there. If the character of the material to be filtered is such that it will not form a good film, then it becomes advantageous to use "filter aids" for pre-coating the cloth with a desirable layer of solids, and the coating need be only of a very slight thickness for good results. Until the film is formed, the first runnings of the filtrate may be cloudy, often necessitating refiltering this portion. A factor which has considerable effect on the performance of filters is the concentration of solids in the pulp. According to Wright, a. high concentration of solids gives a porous cake, since the flow is then slower than with- a thin pulp. The porosity of the cake is also affected by the pressure: a high initial pressure tends to compact the cake, and the same effect results from fluctuations of pressure. In his studies of the relation between pore size and particle size, Hatschek2 observed that the particles in a pulp tend to arrange themselves with maximum cross-section parallel to the direction of flow and that this is more marked at the higher velocities. SUMMARY In order to accommodate a new plant in a limestone quarry in the Mendip Hills, it became necessary to excavate a potentially unstable disused face of the quarry. A simple two-dimensional graphical method was used to analyse a failure, which occurred during a period of exceptionally heavy rain in 1968, and the results of this analysis were used in estimating the stability of the proposed excavation. The presence of water in vertical fissures and tension cracks was found to be a dominant factor in determining the stability of these faces. The results of this approximate analysis were used as a guide in deciding upon the final slope design and the purpose of presenting this example is to illustrate how the various factors involved in arriving at this design were weighed to arrive at a compromise between theoretical recommendations and practical considerations. INTRODUCTION The successful outcome of a geological and geochemical survey to prove adequate re- serves of high quality limestone, suitable for producing burnt lime, led to planning for the installation of the necessary plant at Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation's Batts Combe Quarry at Cheddar in Somerset. Topographic and property boundary limits added to restrictions which were likely to be imposed by any forthcoming planning consents and restricted the choice of plant location to one site. The particular site is, in fact, the main floor area of the original quarry which, like many hillside quarries, had been worked with just one face. Before a benching scheme had been introduced on higher ground, the original face had attained a height of 230 ft. and sloped at angles of 58º to 64º. Fig. I shows the present configuration of the disused quarry face and the present working area above. The floor area below the disused face accommodates the existing crushing, conveying, and screening plant. The new facilities for lime burning are to be in addition to the existing main line business of producing roadstone and concrete aggregates and, although a new aggregate production plant would be included in the new installation, no disturbance of current production was to be contemplated.

The thermodynamics properties of the liquid Pb-Ag-Au system have been determined from galvanic cell measurments five pseudobinary systems of fixed XAg/XAu ratio. The galvanic cell employed a molten PbO-SiO2 electrolyte and was operated between 775" and 1030°C. The thermodynamics properties of lead were obtained directly from the experimental data, whereas the excess integral molar properties and the activities of silver and gold were obtained by means of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The calculated proper -ties of the Ag-Au system agree well with the published properties. The liquidus surface of the Pb-Ag-Au system has been determined at 1200°K. In Parts I' and 11' the galvanic cell Mo,Pb(l)|(PbO-SiO2)(l) SiO2(s) |Pb(alloy)(l), Mo [I] was used to determine the thermodynamics properties of the Pb-Ag and Pb-Au systems, respectively. The use of cell I, in which a molten oxide electrolyte is employed rather than the classical fused-salt electrolyte, was shown to result in more accurate ther-modynamic measurements in that the displacement reaction at the alloy-electrolyte interface (l/Zb)B(alloy) + (I/za)A+Za = (1/Za)A(alloy) + (1/Zb)B+zb [1] was minimized. For the Pb-Ag system, where B = Ag(l), the error in the activity of lead (aPd) re-sulting from Reaction [I] was calculated to be less than 1 pct.l For the Pb-Au system the error in aPb was calculated to be less than 0.5 pct.2 Also, electro-transport measurements on the PbO-SiO2 electro-lyte1,2 established that the conduction was entirely ionic and that lead was present only in the divalent state. In the present study the experimental technique is extended to an investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the liquid Pb-Ag-Au system. Five pseudobinary systems of fixed X Ag/XAu ratio were selected. The experimental results were then combined with the previous measurements on the component binary systems Pb-Ag1 and Pb-AU2 to calculate, by means of the Gibbs-Duhem equation, the molar and partial molar mixing properties for the liquid ternary solutions.

Safety First is a popular motto—most mining companies have adopted it. It is probable, however, that in the majority of cases it is only a motto and gets no further than the office stationery or the bulletin board at the mine's entrance. In but few industries is there employed a greater diversity of machinery and mechanical devices than in coal mining. The list ranges all the tray from mechanical stokers to wood-working machinery and undercutters. Many of these devices, particularly those employed in wood working, are extremely dangerous. In 1913,23 per cent. of all fatalities occurring in coal mining in the U. S. were caused by machinery of some sort or other. Although the forms of accidents occurring with mining machinery are legion, they generally arise from one or more of five causes: (a) Falls from ladders, platforms, etc.; (b) coming in contact with moving machines or parts thereof; (c) electric shocks; (d) failure of some machine part; (e) mismanipulation of valves, levers, switches or other hand-operated controlling devices. The steps which may be taken to prevent accidents from the above causes are almost as numerous as the accidents themselves. There is, and can be, no panacea for all mishaps, nor for any one class of accidents. There is no mathematical or other formula that will bring immunity under any set of conditions. Common sense is the only guide. The remedy for the first-named class of accidents is simple and generally effective—namely, make the staging, ladder, platform, or other support, abundantly strong to carry any possible weight that it may be called upon to bear; provide ample railings on platforms or runways, and non-slipping feet on movable ladders. Coming in contact with moving machine parts is one of the greatest dangers met with in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery. Unfortunately, machine manufacturers have not as a class adopted the idea of thoroughly protecting and incasing the dangerous parts of their product. No one has, or should have, a better or more thorough knowledge of what the dangerous parts or elements of a machine may be than its builder. INTRODUCTION Purpose of Wall System There were 2379.88 m (meters) of tied back wall along Interstate 77 in the Capitol Complex area in Charleston, West Virginia. The main purposes of this wall system was for aesthetics, reduction of excavation, saving the forested slopes, and control of sloughage of the back slopes onto the Interstate. Failure At 1 PM on Thanksgiving Day, 1982, 3 wall panels fell from the insitu position onto the interstate in a matter of seconds. See Fig. 1. The total length of wall that fell was 29.25m. The height of the three panels varied from 10.06m to 10.36~1 and each individual panel had a length along the highway of 9.75m. These were abutting panels that were approximately in the middle of a section of wall 165.81m long. The panels separated from the remainder of the wall at 2 expansion joints that occur at the ends of every 3rd panel. The reinforced portland cement concrete panels were designed on a 76.2mm (millimeter) batter. See Fig. 2 for Wall Dimensions. The footer for these panels was lm wide, was keyed into sandstone bedrock 0.30m and was approximately 1.52m below the portland cement concrete pavement and shoulder. Thirteen of the 17 panels in this section of wall were tied to the sandstone bedrock behind the wall by either 25.4mm or 34.93mm hollow rock bolts. Two panels on each end of the wall were cantilever type walls. The panels that failed had 25.4m hollow rock bolts. A portion of each panel adjacent to both sides of the failure was pulled out from the rock face and appeared to be in imminent danger of also failing. At the close of 1927 Venezuela was producing at the rate of 205,000 bbl, per day, making it the third country in the world in point of present daily production. For the year, the total was close to 64,000,000 bbl., representing an increase of about 70 per cent. over the 37,000,000 bbl. in round numbers produced in 1926. All of the 1927 production canie from fields opened up before the beginning of the year. While no new fields were added to the list of shippers, the past 12 months' wildcatting yielded a fair quota of new discoveries which, in the light of prcsent results, may be considered likely sources of production in due time. Altogether three such promising finds were made Of first importance, at least for the immediate future, is the completion by the Lago Petroleum Corpn. of the San Matins well, 4 miles north of the present edge of the Lagunillas field. Although rated as only a 125. bbl. well, at 3217 ft., it indicates a probable extension of the field over the intervening 4 miles between the two. The two other wildcat discoveries of importance were the Los Manueles well in the District of Colon, which has in all probability opened up a new field about 7 miles north of the present Tarra oprations; and the Honibre Pintado well of the Standard Oil Co. of Venezuela,. in the State of Falcon, which is considered to be a promising clc~vc~lop~ncnt. Neither of these last mentioned two discoveries will apprcciably affect production during 1928, as the Manueles area must await the carrying out of a general plan for the exploitation of the District of Colon, a problem requiring time. The Hombre Pintado area is being tested further, but doubtless several wells will be put down before. anything definite will be done towards making the pipe line. arrangements that rnust necessarily precede the commercial exploitation of the field. AT most mines where large tonnages are handled, "bulldozing" or secondary blasting is an important and costly operation. To reduce the large blocks from primary blasting operations or stoping so that they will be small enough to pass through the chutes into the cars at the haulage level, and not too large for the crushing plant, requires blasting. Often this is done by placing a few sticks of dynamite on top of a block with or without a capping of mud, but to consume less dynamite and to promote safety, most secondary blasting is now done by blockholing, or the drilling of holes 6 to 12 in. long in the blocks, using only a part of a stick of dynamite per hole. Regardless of the method of blasting, however, the term "bulldozing chamber" is applied to the room where this work is done. Bulldozing chambers permit secondary blasting at all times in a safe place without disturbance to the other mining operations. The chambers are usually high above the haulage level and well below the stope level or open-pit floor. In most instances the material is passed through a grizzly in the bulldozing chamber, but sometimes no grizzlies are used. One to four raises extend from the chamber to the stope floor and one or two from the haulage level to the chamber floor. Occasionally large slabs of ore or rock choke the raises above the bull-dozing chamber, and these have to be blasted by attaching a bundle of dynamite sticks on the end of a long pole and placing them up in the raise between the pieces causing the choke. This is called "chute-blasting." To give a picture of the progressive developments in the use of the bulldozing chamber, a few typical mines that show the application of this method to both metal and limestone mines have been selected for description here. Limestone mines have been included because many metal miners do not realize to what extent the nonmetallic, or rock, miners are now applying metal-mining methods successfully in their operations. The bulldozing chamber is the "neck of the bottle" for some mines.

ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the. Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of. a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclinations, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oilfields of which the. city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black-town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian, Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

Intermitt'en'I'ly during the past 10 years showings of oil and gas in tests drilled in the eastern part of Texas have stimulated the search for production. Tests on the flanks of the long-known salt domes, principally Keechi and Butler, have found oil in small quantity in the Woodbine formation of the basal part of the Upper Cretacrous. In the central part of Cherokee County, Colliton et all in 1926, in their Clapp No. 2 found a good showing of 37" B6. oil at about 3500 ft. Several wells were drilled in 1926 and 1927 as a result of this showing. On Jan. 22, 1927, Humble Oil & Refining Co. wildcatting on Carey Lake salt dome, obtained commercial production in its Clark No. 1. This inaugurated intensive exploration both for salt domes and for other types of structure. As a result several new domes and a few promising structures of other types have been discovered. Development in East Texas durinG 1927 Carey Lake Dome Location.—On the Neches River in Anderson and Cherokree counties, 10 miles west of Jacksonville, Cherokec (lounty. (Fig. 1.) date of Discovery.—During 1925 geologisls of the Humble Oil & Refining Co. working in the Neches River valley discovered slight surface fracturexs, cratic dips, and slickensided clays and sands in green-sands of the Mount Selman formation north of Carey Lake. A number of core tests were drilled by the Humble Oil & Refining C'o. during 1925 and 1926, some more than 1500 ft. deep, to check their surface obsuvations of faulting, and the possibilities of a salt dome. On May 16, 1927, solid rock salt was reached at 2142ft. in the first deep test on the prospect. Surfacc Indications.—Surface indications of the Carey Lake dome, though not as evident as manifestations at the previously known domes of Palestine, Keechi, Butler, Grand Saline, Steen and Brooks, are more noticeable than on any of the domes discovered in 1927. F. E. Poulsen, of the Pure Oil Co., who examined the area before the deep tests were drilled, noted the alignment of erratic surface dips which suggested faulting, especially in conjunction with slickensiding, and the local deflec-

The gravity discussed here is that of the clean oil produced. Gravities of fluids containing water, free or in the form of emulsion, sand, drilling mud or mineral salts of a nonbituminous nature do not represent the gravity of crude oil as considered in this paper. During recent years it has become a frequent occurrence for operators to be called upon to explain to landowners the reasons for variations in gravity on shipments of oil from wells in which they are interested as royalty owners. In regard to single well leases it has been noted that marked changes in gravity frequently have occurred for no apparent reason. Data collected on the subject and correlated with production methods reveal interesting facts. It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the highlights on the subject. These gravity changes in the natural crude oil are with a few exceptions the result of the liberation under varying conditions of the volatile hydrocarbons from the natural oil-gas solution contained within the pool. The subject of the liberation of gases from natural oil-gas solution has been investigated by Ben E. Lindsly, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the observations recorded here are in the main consistent with his conclusions. Investigators have recognized two methods of liberation of gas from solution—flash and differential. In the latter method the vapors are removed from the liquid as rapidly as formed and have no opportunity to come to a condition of equilibrium with the oil. In flash liberation an equilibrium condition between the oil and the gas exists at the pressure of separation. Mr. Lindsly has found that the method of liberating the gas from the oil has a pronounced effect on the final gravity and that differential liberation results in a higher A.P.I. gravity due to the higher ratio of gasoline producing hydrocarbons left in the oil. Under actual production practices with high velocities in flow strings, it is our contention that conditions of perfect equilibrium between gas and the oil rarely exist, and that gas separation is made under varying conditions, sometimes approaching that of equilibrium and at other times departing from it.
