Successful preliminary experiments at the University of North Carolina indicate that computers can provide speedy, accurate identification of the mineral content of rock samples. In just two minutes, the University's Univac 1105 computer solves the complex equations that would often require more than four hours using conventional methods. A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Experimental statistical designs were used at Zortman Mining Company's, Zortman, Montana, heap-leach operation to establish functional relationships between key operating parameters and gold/silver recoveries. Zinc feed rate, lead feed rate, and vacuum (CFM/gpm) account for 64% and 67% of the attainable gold and silver recoveries, respectively. Surface response graphs of the resulting polynomials were plotted. These graphs were used to optimize Zortman's Merrill-Crowe precipitation process.

Current radon-222 and radon-daughter control principles and practices for U.S. underground uranium mine atmospheres are discussed and a brief review of the applicability of other possible control methods such as rock sealants, radon-222 removal, and radon-daughter removal is given.

The H-Coal process, an ebullated bed reactor system for converting coal to liquid fuel, is described. Results from long-duration continuous flow bench-scale operations with Wyoming Wyodak, Arizona Black Mesa, and Utah Kaiparowits Plateau coals are presented. Economic data on the conversion of these coals to liquid products are given. The potentials of the H-Coal process in regard to coal from western producers is stressed.

Several capital cost estimation procedures are reviewed briefly, although the factored estimate method is discussed in preference. A table of cost versus equipment parameter data is provided, where the cost may be updated from the current value of the M&S cost index for mining and milling. Cost equations are useful to prepare computer programs which perform capital cost calculations. The use of the factored estimate method is illustrated.
