In this paper, it is proposed to outline a method for the determination of melting points of those metals and alloys having high fusion temperatures. The application of the method as used to determine the melting points of alloys of tungsten and molybdenum will be given. It will be seen from these results that tungsten and molybdenum form a completely isomorphous series. This is also verified by the accompanying photomicrographs. Tungsten and molybdenum have been found to crystallize in the same system namely, isometric, and the crystal units are cubes. These determinations were made by examining etching pits in the pure metals.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines, support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine, and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

SINCE May 1948, when tungsten carbide bits were introduced at the Flin Flon mine, they have been popular with the miners because of their fast drilling speed and low gage loss. The high cost of commercial carbide bits and tipped drill steel, however, prevented their use except for the hardest rock. In an effort to extend the use of tungsten carbide on a basis economically competitive with detachable steel bits, experimental work was begun in 1950 to test the feasibility of making tungsten carbide tipped drill steel in the mine drill steel shop. This work showed that tipped drill steel could be made locally at less than half the cost of the commercial product. The performance of the local tipped drill steel was comparable to that obtained with commercial carbide bits and tipped drill steel and the cost per foot drilled was much lower. Local tipped drill steel was adopted for all mine drilling in November 1951. Since then drilling costs per foot have been sharply reduced and footage drilled per manshift has increased markedly. Experience at Flin Flon has shown that production of satisfactory carbide tipped drill steel is not difficult and that highly skilled labor and costly equipment are not required. As long as wise selection of brazing materials is made and certain simple precautions are rigidly maintained, there is no reason why small mines with relatively unskilled labor cannot produce a satisfactory product. The following description outlines the technique used at Flin Flon for making carbide tipped drill steel and discusses characteristics of the brazing process that make special precautions necessary. Drill steel is forged to four-wing shape in a conventional steel sharpening forge. Standard steel dies are modified to minimize forging cracks around the central waterhole and to forge a blunt bithead on the steel. The steel is preheated to 1500°F and held at this temperature for at least 2 min. When the temperature has equalized throughout the steel section, the drill steel is transferred to the forging furnace and heated rapidly with a reducing flame up to 2000°F. This two-stage method of heating minimizes the grain growth and decarburization of the steel while ensuring that the steel temperature does not vary greatly throughout the forging zone. After forging the steel is allowed to cool in air to about 1600°F before being annealed in a bath of vermiculite. Despite the high hardenability of the 3 pct Ni-Cr-Mo drill steel used, this simple treatment anneals the drill steel sufficiently for milling. The forged and annealed drill steel is slotted on a plain horizontal milling machine that is equipped with a quick opening chuck and a slot depth stop. The full depth of the slot is milled in a single pass of the 3-in. milling cutter which is fed at 33/4 in. per min across the crown of each bit wing. The slots are cut to a width of 0.342 to 0.344 in. Maintenance of this slot width is necessary to ensure that the optimum brazing clearance of 0.002 in. will result after assembling of shims and carbide in the slot. Prior to March 1953, when the milling machine was installed, drill steel was slotted on a small manually fed ¾ hp milling attachment mounted on the bed of a lathe. Over 16,000 drill steels were slotted on this unit, and in view of its small size and low cost it gave excellent service. Brazing of Tipped Steel Drill steel that has been milled and cleaned in carbon tetrachloride is mounted in a rotating cradle holding six drill steels, the length of which may be from 2 to 12 ft. The slots in the drill steel, the shims, and the tungsten carbide inserts are thoroughly fluxed with a fluoride flux and assembled as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows the brazing equipment in use. As the ring burner is lowered over the bithead a spring valve opens the gas lines, and the gas mixture, preset to give a slightly reducing flame, is fed to the ring burner where it is lit from a pilot flame. The ring burner heats the drill steel over a zone about 1 to 2 in. below the bithead, which becomes heated by conduction through the steel. By this means the bithead is heated rapidly and evenly, and contamination of the brazing joint with soot from the flame is avoided. The bithead is heated to the melting temperature of the brazing alloy within 1 min. This rapid heating minimizes the disadvantage of a non-eutectic brazing alloy. The brazing alloy, a nickel-bearing quaternary alloy, is placed at the bottom of the slot below the carbide insert, as shown in Fig. 1. As the brazing alloy melts it is drawn by displacement by the carbide and by capillary action into all parts of the joint to displace liquid flux from metal surfaces. As soon as the brazing alloy melts, each insert in turn is wiped by being moved back and forth along the slot. This action assists wetting of the carbide by the brazing alloy and assists in displacing molten flux from the joint. After continuous heating for about 75 sec, when the bithead has reached a temperature of about 1500°F, the ring burner is raised and the gas supply is shut off automatically by the spring valve. As soon as heating is stopped a hand press is placed on the bithead and the inserts are squeezed down firmly. This action minimizes the clearance between the bottom of the insert and the slot. Correctly brazed steel should maintain a clearance at the bottom of the slot of 0.001 to 0.002 in. After six steels have been brazed they are removed from the cradle and allowed to cool in air. As soon as each drill steel is cool it is dressed on a grinding wheel to remove excess flux and braze and is ground to the gage appropriate to the length of the drill steel.

A series of strips of a Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy were Prepared containing cubical y'(NisAl) precipitates with edge lengths from 60 to 500A. A particle-free solution-tveated strip was included for cornparison. They weve cold-rolled 95 pct and the effects of particle size on the isochronal (1/2 hr) annealing behavior between 300° and 950°C studied (by hardness and light and electron microscopy). It ulas inferred that the particles deformed with the lnatvix becoming lamellae which remained coherent. Comparison with published data fov pure nickel showed that aluminum greatly re-tavded softening and recrystallization, but it made little difference whether or not particles were present. The presence of pakticles led to a heterogeneous distribution of precipitates after annealing at 700" to 750°C. Recovery was not detected. Recrystallization occurred by the growth of new grains into unrecrys-tallized material. In a previous study by the author,' the growth of Ll2-type ordered yl(Ni3Al) precipitates was followed in Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy as a function of aging at 600" and 700°C. The particles were showo to be cubical in shape in all sizes from 50 to 3000A and remained coherent. This work was used as a guide in preparing the starting structures for the present study of the effect of these particles on the annealing behavior of heavily cold-rolled strip. Another question of present interest was whether dislocation and particle hardening were additive, since the structures before rolling ranged from solution-treated to peak-aged to overaged. Also, precipitation might occur on annealing after cold-rolling. Reference may be made to other papers2"5 for previous work in this relatively unexplored field and only some recent work will be mentioned her:. phillips2 studied the effect of deformable 0 to 590A-diam cobalt particles on a Cu-3.23 pct Co alloy rolled 95 pct and found that the particles, which rolled out into thin lamellae, impeded softening and recrystallization. Tanner and servi3 likewise studied the annealing of cold-swaged Cu-2 pct Co alloy containing 150A-diam particles and found impeding effects. Haessner et a1.,4 on the other hand, found that incoherent 2-p-diam non-deformable particles of B4C (0.04 vol pct) tended to increase the rate of recrystallization of copper rolled up to 95 pct reduction. They attributed this to the formation of new grains at the particle interfaces. Humphreys and artin' found that nondeformable silica particles in copper rolled to 30 pct reduction accelerated recrystallization if the particle spacing was large and retarded it if the spacing was smaller. Haessner et a1 4 also studied a rolled Ni-Cr-A1 alloy; however, the particles of y'(Ni3Al)-type precipitate were not put in before rolling, but separated during the isothermal annealing at 750°C. No previous work appears to have been carried out on the effect of y' (Ni3A1) particles on the annealing of Ni-A1 alloy. Hornbogen and ICreye7 redetermined the solubility c of aluminum in nickel as a function of temperature T and showed that it was given by c = 32.6 exp(-1940/RT). This relation gives aluminum solubilities of 15.1, 14.2, 12.0, and 10.7 at. pct at 1000°, 900°, 700°, and 600°C, respectively. The phase precipitated from the nickel-rich solid solution is fcc y1 (Ni3A1) which has a Cu3Au -type ordered structure8 and remains ordered up to 1000°C.B EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy used was identical with that used before. Chemical analysis showed 6.27 wt pct (12.71 at. pct) Al, the principle impurities being 0.065 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Co, 0.020 pct Cu, and 0.004 pct C. Bar stock of 1 in. diam was cold-swaged to % in. diam, cold-rolled to 0.300-in.-thick strip, and annealed at 900°C in dry hydrogen. It was cold-rolled to 0.100-in. thickness and solution-treated for 1 hr at 1000°C while sealed in a quartz tube in argon, quenching in iced brine with the aid of a device to snap off the nose of the tube. Lineal analysis gave an average grain size of 0.055 mm. Pieces of strip were aged at 700°C in vacuo for 30 min, 51/4 hr, and 1 week to produce nominal average particle widths of 60, 150, and 500A, respectively, as known from the previous work.' The average diamond pyramid hardness was determined. The heat-treated strips were rolled from 0.100 to 0.005 in., a reduction of 95 pct, and the rolled strips stored at about -5°C. Small pieces were annealed within 1 week for 30 min at temperatures from 300° to 950° ±2°C in a horizontal vacuum furnace. Strips were withdrawn into a cooling zone, giving an estimated initial cooling rate from 950°C of about 50°C per sec. Average diamond pyramid hardnesses were determined on a lightly electropolished spot on the surface of each strip using 300-g load. Each point on the softening curves represents a separate annealed specimen. Sections containing the rolling direction were examined by optical metallography. Selected specimens were electrothinned to the center plane' and examined by transmission at 100 kv in a Siemens Elmiskop I electron microscope. It is well-known that changes in the structure tend to occur when a deformed strip is electrothinned below a thickness of a few hundred angstroms, although this is less serious with a material such as nickel which has a high melting point, and also is apt to be less serious when particles are present. Observations were nevertheless confined to thicker regions of the foils with estimated thicknesses over 1000A. No changes were observed due to beam exposure.

The flow stress of a series of Ni-Cr-A1 alloys consisting of a dispersion of y' (based on Ni3Al) in a rnatrix of nickel-base solid solution y has been measured at temperatures up to 950°C as a fwzction of the volume fraction of y'. At high temperatures the flow stress is controlled by the amount of Y' in the alloy, i.e., the higher the volume fraction of y', the greater is the flow stress. This simple relationship is not obeyed at low temperatures in so far as a peak in the flow stress-volume fraction relation occurs at about 25 pct y'. The variation in the mechanical properlies of these alloys as a function of both temperature and volume fraction of y' has been correlated with changes in distribution of both the dislocations and y'. The results are interpreted on the basis that at low temperatures the y matrix is strengthened significantly bv the presence of a hyperfine y' precipitate due to decomposition on cooling; at high temperatures the y matrix is a single phase of low strength. It is clearly recognized that the high temperature strength of most nickel-base superalloys depends upon a dispersion of the ordered fcc phase y', based on Ni3A1, in a fcc solid solution matrix y based on nickel. Although the volume fraction of y' varies widely from about 0.2 in Nimonic 80A to about 0.6 in Mar-M200, all such nickel-base alloys manifest an unusual insensi-tivity of the flow stress with respect to temperature. In Mar-M200 for example, the 0.2 pct flow stress remains essentially constant from room temperature to 750°C. The conclusion has been drawn1 that the characteristically low temperature dependence of the flow stress of y-y' nickel-base alloys is obtained when the state of dispersion of y' is such that dislocations are forced to cut through the y' particles at the onset of yielding. When the spacing between the y' particles is so large that the flow stress is controlled by dislocation bowing between particles, then the initial flow stress decreases progressively with an increase in temperature at a rate determined by changes in elastic properties. The same conclusion is inherent in the detailed, mechanistic model of the deformation process in commercial superalloys which has been developed by Copley and ear' in which the temperature independent flow stress is attributed primarily to the contribution of the antiphase boundary energy created in the y' particles during deformation. In this theory the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is a reflection of the constant antiphase boundary energy as a function of temperature. An important microstructural parameter that is relevant to the explanations that have been suggested' to account for the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is the volume fraction of y'. To vary the latter to any significant extent in a given commercial alloy is clearly difficult. However, it is possible in a relatively simple Ni-Al-Cr ternary system which manifests analogous microstructures in terms of the distribution of y' in y and contains specific alloys which have flow properties that depend on temperature in a manner quite similar to their more complex commercial counterparts. Hornbogen et . have studied precipitation phenomena and deformation mechanisms in such alloys but only where the y' volume fraction was small (less than 0.2) and the y' particle size varied from less than 100A up to a maximum of -1000A. In the present study, a series of alloys was prepared in which the volume percent of y' at 900°C was varied from 0 to 100 pct with the y' particle size (of the order 0.5 p) comparable to the sizes obtained in commercial superalloys. Particular attention has been given to the relationship between variations in the volume fraction and distribution of y' and the temperature dependence of the flow stress EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-Cr-Al system was selected because it is well characterized, bears a close relationship to commercial alloys, and offers the advantage of an extra degree of freedom over a binary system. In the present investigation, a series of alloys across the tie line between NisA1 and Ni3Cr (Ni3Cr is not an in-termetallic compound, the nomenclature is only used to designate the composition) were vacuum cast. The pseudobinary6 and the composition of the alloys used are shown in Fig. 1. It is important to note that the compositions of the y phase and the y' phase in the two-phase alloys was always the same. Alloy compositions were selected from the binary diagram, Fig. 1, in order that aging at 900°C would produce from 0 (100 pct y) to 100 pct y' by volume percent. (The size of the y' particles produced during the equilibrium aging treatment increased as the volume fraction of y' increased, ranging from about 0.2 p at low volume fractions up to about 0.8 p at the highest volume fraction.) The y' phase is based on the inter-metallic compound Ni,A1 which has the fcc LIZ type superlattice structure, and chromium substitutes for aluminum in the structure. The y phase is a disordered fcc solid solution. The alloys were heat treated at 1150°C for 2 hr, air cooled to room temperature, and finally annealed for 16 hr at 900°C. The rods were then centerless ground to 0.25 in. diam and cut into compression samples 0.5 in. long. The compression tests were made on an In-stron machine at a strain rate of 7 x 10"4 sec-'. A rapid heating radiant heat furnace was used which minimized the heating and temperature stabilization time to 10 min for the highest testing temperature. All the tests were stopped after 5 pct plastic strain.

IT is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua; our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, .and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I :able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole.. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transactions, dealing not only with the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas awaiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and other Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. II. HISTORY. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors penetrated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. Coal is the principal energy source for the American Electric Power System (AEP System), which generates and delivers more electric energy to its customers within a seven-state area than any other investor- owned electric public utility. The company expected to burn 21.5 million tons of coal in 1968 at its coal-fired, steam-electric generating stations. About 4.3 million tons, representing 20% of the firm's total annual requirement, was the expected yield of its captive coal mines; the other 17.2 million tons were to be purchased from commercial mines in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. American Electric's largest captive coal mining operation is conducted by Central Ohio Coal Co., a subsidiary of Ohio Power Co., at the Muskingum mine in the Meigs Creek No. 9 coal field of southeastern Ohio. The mine was started in 1953 to produce the coal requirements of the Philo and Muskingum River generating plants of Ohio Power Co., and it has been supplying their annual requirements in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 million tons since that time. The Muskingum River plant is one of the major steam-electric generating stations on the AEP System. This plant began operation in 1953 with a 215-megawatt unit and now has five generating units with a total plant capacity of 1,495 megawatts. The addition of the 615-megawatt Unit 5 in the summer of 1968 increased the total annual coal requirement of the plant from 2.6 to 4.4 million tons. In order to produce the additional 1.8 million tons of coal for the Unit 5 addition and to exploit the remaining coal reserves at the Muskingum mine most economically, Central Ohio Coal Co. has undertaken a $41 million expansion and modernization program, involving the world's largest dragline and an electric railroad.

Edward Stafford, Chester, Pa.:—Doring all my business life, I have been engaged in the manufacture of Bessemer and open-hearth steels, but, during my long connection with the Shoenberger Steel Co. of Pittsburg, I had some experience in the manufacture of high-grade puddled iron for horseshoes, and in making, by Dr. Otto Wuth's process, extremely pure, low-phosphorus puddled blooms (analyzing from 0.005 to 0.01 per cent. of phosphorus and sulphur), which were melted with low-phosphorus pig-iron in acid open-hearth furnaces, to make extra locomotive fire-box steel. I have also seen the Danks puddlers in operation at different times and places, notably where they were most successful, at the Otis Steel Works, Cleveland, Ohio; then under the management of our friend, Mr. S. T. Wellman. These Danks blooms were made solely for open-hearth melting-stock, to which they were well adapted. (The unavoidable presence of bits of ore-fix imbedded in the mass of the metal always prevents the profitable manufacture of merchant iron from Danks' blooms.) With the experience just described, I was to some degree in position to value fairly the means, methods and results of Mr. Roe's mechanical puddling from the metallurgical or technical and economic points of view, when given an opportunity by Mr. Roe to see his puddling-furnace or machine in operation in Pottstown, Pa. Briefly, the furnace, with water-cooled bottom, is rectangular in plan, about 20 by 8 ft. in the clear, suspended by trunnions at the middle of the long sides, at a height of 17 or 18 ft. above the general level. The oscillation (65" each way from the vertical) is accomplished by geared segments (attached to the downward-projecting side or trunnion-plates) with which engage pinions driven by a reversing engine. THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. MANY attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits-a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It may be urged that the microscopic structure must be taken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all test-pieces be made under the same conditions; and it is be¬lieved that the tests described in this paper satisfy that require¬ment. IT does not seem practicable to review all the other specialized curricula that have developed in the mineral industries field in so much detail as has been given for petroleum. Nor is it easy to draw a definite line between true curricula, leading to a designated degree in the special subject, and options, which may range from the mere substitution of one or two courses for others ' in the final years to differences so extensive as almost to amount to separate curricula. Even to attempt to catalogue all the options that have been offered at one time or another would , require too much space. The remainder of this discussion, there- fore, will be confined to three topics which seem to be of major importance. Mining and metallurgical curricula will be covered in a later chapter. Geology The first, from the historical view, is geology in its relation to the mineral industries. Previous, chapters have made clear that in the early years of mineral industry instruction in the United States economic geology and mining engineering, so overlapped one another that men who were by training and experience economic geologists were appointed professors of mining, while men who had graduated as mining engineers sometimes developed into professors of geology. Even today men whose basic training was in- geology as a pure science, and who perhaps took a doctor's .degree in that subject, have attained such distinction in the mineral industries as to be universally accepted as "mining men," and their right to be regarded as mining engineers would not be questioned, even though 'they did not .take a degree in engineering. SUGGESTIONS that existing schools give instruction bearing on the mineral industry, or that schools for that purpose should be established in the United States, began to be made early, and it would require too much space to catalogue them all. Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King's College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and, the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1823, and A. W. Craven in 1829), it was only during the period of Renwick's professorship of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry (1820- 1853) that much attention was given to applied science.* Among the Austin papers, published by the American Historical Association,2 there is a draft in Stephen F.
