This short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parrl and Yancey and Frazer. A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms : 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.) It is usually found that sulfur compounds of class 3, the metallic sulfates, are present in coal in small proportions only, amounting to about 1 or 1.5 per cent. of the total sulfur. The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. The subject of reservoir energy and its efficient utilization has been well explored in many papers. The present effort, therefore, is limited to a summary of existing information combined with an emphasis of the probability that the relative importance of controlling factors will change with advancing knowledge. Consequently the necessity for flexibility in laws and regulations, inherent in the problem, is emphasized. Definitions Many terms have been widely used in the literature without having been specifically defined. For example, confusion exists in the use of ((reservoir energy" and "gas energy." The latter is much more limited in meaning than the former. Other terms have been variously used. Consequently, I shall preface my remarks with definitions of a few of the more pertinent terms. Reservoir energy is that force or forces, active or potential, that is native to the reservoir and has the power to move oil through the reservoir rock. The energy may result from expanding gas, from hydrostatic head, from the weight of overburden, or from any other source. Gas energy is the expansive power of gas when pressure is reduced. It is one type of reservoir energy. An oil reservoir is that part of a geologic formation or formations in which oil occurs in commercial quantities wholly surrounded by nonproductive rock. The essence of this definition is effective separation rather than remoteness and under it oil reservoirs may be superimposed in the same oil pool. Conservation of reservoir energy means primarily its maximum use in the production of oil. Unit operation is a plan of development and production, which embraces an entire oil reservoir under a unity of engineering control. It is distinct from unitization, which has to do with arrangements of organization and equities to make unit operation possible in areas of divided ownership.

296. Definition of Specific Gravity. - The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density * to that of water at 4' C. (39'2' F.). This relative density may be learned in any case by comparing the ratio of the weight of a certain volume of the given substance to that of an equal volume of water; hence the specific gravity is often defined as: the weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water. The statement that the specific gravity of graphite is 2, of corundum 4, of galena 7-5, etc., means that the densities of the minerals named are 2; 4, and 7'5, etc., times that of water; in other words, as familiarly expressed, any volume of them, a cubic inch for example, weighs 2 times, 4 times, 7.5 times, etc., as much rn a like volume, a cubic inch, of water. Strictly speaking, since the density of water varies with its expansion or contraction under change of temperature, the comparison should be made with water at a fixed temperature, namely 4' C. (39'2' F.), at which it has its maxi- mum density. If made at a higher temperature, a suitable correction should be introduced by calculation. Practically, however, since a high degree of accuracy is not often called for, and, indeed, in many cases is impracticable to attain in consequence of the nature of the material at hand, in the ordinary work of obtaining the specific gravity of minerals the temperature at which the observation is made can safely be neglected. Common variations of temperature would seldom affect the value of the specific gravity to the extent of one unit in the third decimal place.

THINKING that it may prove of interest to the Institute, I have prepared a short account of the blowing in and subsequent working of the "A" furnace of the Edgar Thomson Steel Works. This furnace was built for the purpose of making spiegel, but has been started and is now running on Bessemer iron. The shape and size of the furnace are shown in the accompanying drawing. It will be seen that the section is formed of lines making very small angles with each other. In fact, an arc of a circle can be drawn, from the top to the tuyeres, which will nowhere deviate more than two inches from the lines given. In building, also, great pains were taken to gradually round the angles, so that the most careful observer, standing in the crucible and looking upward, could not tell at what points the slopes changed. It will also be seen that the widest part of the furnace is almost exactly midway between the bottom and the stock line, The flattest slope is maintained for 20 feet above the crucible, and is about 1 s inch to the foot from the perpendicular. The furnace is lined with small brick throughout, and has six tuyeres four inches in diameter, which project seven inches inside of crucible. There are three Siemens-Cowper-Cochrane stoves, each 15 feet in diameter by 50 feet high. Blast is furnished by an upright engine with 32-inch steam cylinder, 84-inch air cylinder, and 48-inch stroke. The steam cylinder has balanced poppet valves, working horizontally. The steam valves are worked by a Porter link-movement in order to obtain a variable cut-off. The exhaust valves are worked by a separate eccentric. This remarkable gold and silver bearing district is situated on the middle fork of Boise River, in Alturas County, Idaho Territory, about eighteen miles north of Rocky Bar, and sixty-five to seventy miles, as the crow flies, east of Boise City, the capital of the Territory. This district lies in the very heart of one of the most wild and mountainous regions of Idaho. For many miles in every direction nothing can be seen but bold granite mountains, with deep narrow gorges cutting into their sides in every direction, rendering them almost inaccessible except to .the hardy mountaineer and adventurous prospector. The mountain sides are covered, in most part, by dense forests of pine, fir, and spruce timber. In every canon there are clear streams of pure running water that empty into the principal forks of Boise River. The only line of approach to this mountainous region at present is from the southwest, by way of Rocky Bar, the county seat of Alturas County, to which place there is a good wagon-road. From thence to Atlanta City, eighteen miles, the road, or pack-trail, passes over the high, steep range that separates the south and middle forks of Boise River. During severe winters this line of approach is closed up by deep snows for months at a time, thus leaving the district isolated, in the bosom of the grand old mountains. The geological formation is granite, of a coarse, friable texture, and in many places is traversed by numerous dikes of syenite, and three or four varieties of porphyry, which cut through the granite in easterly and westerly directions. This paper gives a brief summary of theory on radiation waves and describes experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and by the Canadian Geological Survey at the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Dr. D. A. Keys, Dr. F. W. Lee and the writer did the experimental work, and Dr. L. V. King some of the theoretical work. In prospecting for orebodies underground it is a usual practice to employ a loop of wire carrying an alternating current that induces an electromotive force in good conductors beneath the earth. The conduc-tars are usually of such low resistance and impedance that currents of considerable magnitude may result in these orebodies or conductors, and these currents in turn induce an electromotive force in a detecting coil placed near the surface of the ground. By using amplifiers it is possible so to enhance the effect of this electromotive force in the detecting coil that the currents in the underground conductors are detected in spite of the powerful effects coming directly to the coil from the primary loop. In such cases distance or depth has primary importance, for the effects have to pass down to the orebody and the secondary effects induced therein have again to pass back through the ground to the observer's detection coil on the surface. However, there is another factor to consider—absorption of the electromagnetic disturbances by the intervening soils and rocks. This absorption will vary with their composition. Thus the main factors that determine the possibility of detecting ore underground are: 1. Its depth beneath the surface, 2. The magnitude of the conducting orebody, 3. The excellence of the conductivity of the orebody as compared with that of the surrounding strata, 4. The frequency of the alternating current,

The increasing complexity of modern mining technology makes it ever more difficult to decide on the 'best* way to solve problems in mine planning. Yet with escalating costs it becomes increasingly more important for the mining engineer to be able to evaluate quantitatively the implications of the 'what happens if' postulation on the efficiency and economics of exploitation. The use of a model of the orebody can yield an estimate, not just of overall expected results, but also of the sensitivity of these results to possible variations in the orebody. Estimation techniques, such as Kriging, will produce the expected value for the grade of ore at any given point, or over any given volume within a deposit. However, the actual grades mined during production will - of necessity - differ from the predicted values. These possible variations, and the sensitivity of the management decisions to them, can be investigated in detail by the use of simulation. An orebody can be simulated which follows the known characteristics of the deposit at any given stage in development. These properties might be the histogram of grade values, the semivariogram from the samples, the actual borehole assays, geological constraints and/or interpretation, topography, lease boundaries etc. This would be one possible 'realisation' of the deposit as dictated by the currently known data. If several of these simulations are carried out, each conditioned to the current knowledge of the orebody, then it is possible to gain an idea of the range of possible outcomes of any mining procedure or decision taken - all of which are equally likely. Not only can the best decision then be taken, but its sensitivity to the inherent variation within the orebody, and to the ever present estimation errors may be thoroughly studied.

IN laying out a new mine, provision should be made for the ultimate recovery of as much coal in any given bed as is consistent with safety and economic mining. Though each mining district, if not each individual mine, has problems that make the adoption of any hard and fast rule impossible, certain basic principles are adapted to practically all conditions. One of the most vital is the provision for barrier pillars of ample dimensions to protect all haulage and permanent airways during the life of the property. Where conditions permit, room or butt entries should be driven on the strike or slightly to the raise and rooms turned at right angles to said entries. The width of rooms and room pillars is governed by conditions prevailing in the mines under consideration. A safe rule is: In advancing, extract not more than 25 to 35 per cent. of the entire seam; in exceptionally thick seams, considerably less than 25 per cent. should be taken. Rooms usually vary in length from 250 to 350 ft. (76 to 106 m.) with a barrier pillar of not less than 80 ft. between the last crosscut in rooms, and entry and room crosscuts should be driven on sights; room crosscuts should be driven at right angles to the direction of the rooms. In mines under excessively heavy cover or where roof conditions are bad, rooms should be driven narrow and a barrier pillar left at every fifth to tenth room. This barrier should be of such dimensions that one or more rooms, with pillars of usual dimensions, may be turned through it when the barrier is no longer required. Two of the advantages of such a barrier are the protection of the panel against peaking of roof load during pillar extraction and the easy closing of the entry in case of fire.

Such are the rigors of climate and topography of western Tasmania, that much of the area has remained uninhabited. The mountains, rising to peaks above 5000 ft high, receive the winds out of the west and precipitate 110 in. of rainfall a year on this coast. The drenched forests have a primordial look with such unfamiliar trees as the tru-sassafras, blackwood, cheesewood, ti tree, and man tree ferns. Prospectors speak of the "horizontals," trees which, in the dense foliage, grow out flat. When the explorer climbs over them he does not come back to the ground but continues forward on dense vegetation with the ground many feet below. Gold was discovered by the intrepid prospectors of the late nineteenth century and stamp mills were erected in the vicinity of Zeehan and Queenstown. At Mount Lyell, mining began for gold in the ironstone capping. The familiar story, of course, is that copper was found beneath the gossan and it was this mineralization that lead to permanent mining operations. Two companies began mining at Mount Lyell and their history from 1893 to 1902 was marked by an unreasonable competitiveness, human perversity and technical difficulties. The North Lyell and Mount Lyell companies were mining copper ores within one mile of each other separated only by a ridge. Each company built its own railroad and harbor. For six years of struggle both companies tried to work out the metallurgical problem which was the key to profit. Although they didn't know it, the two ores were complimentary and could have been smelted together. North Lyell ore was strong in silica and weak in iron, whereas Mount Lyell was fortunate in having a first-class metallurgist in Robert Sticht, from Brooklyn, N. Y., who in 1902 successfully achieved pyritic smelting without the use of carbon fuel.

In February, 1918, the conclusion was published by Lewis and Beal "that wells of equal output on the average will produce equal amounts of oil in the future, regardless of the ages of the wells." This conclusion was based upon the study of data collected principally in Oklahoma and was not known at that time to be true for other oil fields. An abundance of statistical proof was later collected by the senior author of the present paper, which showed that the conclusion was undoubtedly well founded and that it applied to other fields as well. Accordingly, it was later restated2 as the "law of equal expectations" as follows: "If two wells under similar conditions produce equal amounts during any given year, the amounts they will produce thereafter, on the average, will be approximately equal, regardless of their relative ages." Although only scanty data from the California oil fields were available at the time this publication was prepared, sufficient information was analyzed upon which to base the insert on Fig. 80, which showed beyond a doubt that the law held at least for a part of the Midway oil field in California. Recently the authors have collected more complete data in California, and it is the purpose of this paper to explain the method used in demonstrating the truth of the law and, in addition, to give several methods by which curves constructed in accordance with this law can be used in a practical way with ease and accuracy. The use of a pneumatic process for removing fine material (usually less than 48-mesh) is increasing in the preparation of stoker-size coal. The fine material, produced as a byproduct, is known as dedusting-plant dust. Since fusain is the most friable ingredient in bituminous coal (it may readily be rubbed to an impalpable powder with the fingers), it tends to accumulate in this byproduct. While studying the properties of cokes produced by blending Illinois coals with other materials, considerable quantities of fusain were required. Dedusting-plant dust suggested itself as a convenient supply. It became necessary, therefore, to determine how much fusain was contained in a measured sample of dust, how the fusain was distributed with respect to size and specific gravity in the sample, and whether or not it would be feasible or desirable further to concentrate or to recover the fusain from the dust before using it in the blends to be coked. The results obtained indicate the possibilities of production of a high-fusain material. Previous Work Lehmann and Stach have developed a processl,2 for separation of banded bituminous coals into their band ingredients by impact pulverization followed by screening or air separation. They found, as might be expected, that the fusain was concentrated in the very fine material. Prockat and Raute3 examined samples from dedusting plants operating in the Ruhr. They separated the dust into various screen sizes and determined the composition of each of these sizes in terms of the banded ingredients of the original coal. In the dusts examined by them, the finest material was always high in fusain, and most of the fusain contained in the original samples could be recovered from this fraction.

I have bad considerable experience with the testing-machine at the Watertown Arsenal, having had broken there sixteen large steel eye-bars, besides quite a number of iron bars and two compression members. So far as accurate mid satisfactory results are concerned, the machine is all we could ask for, and the officers who have it in charge, together with their civil assistants, are thoroughly conversant with it 1 details, and entirely competent to make the tests required. The principal defect is that the force is very inadequate. As the machine is arranged, tile weighing apparatus is at one end and stationary, the measure of strain being carried from this to the scale-beam by the fluid in a tube m small that it looks like a wire. At the other end is placed the hydraulic press by which the power is applied; this press is mounted on a small carriage and held by two eight-inch screws about four feet above the floor, which arc of course strained in compression during tensile tests, and in tension during' compression tests. When the stretch of the material has exhausted the throw of the plunger it is necessary to relieve the strain, draw back the plunger, and move the carriage along, which is done by nuts turned by steam working on the large screws. Every specimen placed in the machine must be lifted above the large screws and lowered into position. To do this, crabs, running on travellers, which span the entire room, are placed over the machine, and by these the specimen can be lifted and put in place. The actual time required to make a test depends largely on the amount which the material stretches, bat it may generally be said, that for specimens which will stretch from two to three feet the

G. W. Geil (National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C.)—The authors state that the degree of accuracy realized in the experimental determination of a, is likely rather low. This inaccuracy is attributed to the difficulty in reading the load of the tension machine at the instant of fracture of the test bars. I believe there is another factor which may have added considerably to the inaccuracy in the determination of a,, namely, the determination of 8,. Fracture of a cylindrical tensile specimen of a ductile metal tested in tension at room temperature is generally initiated at the axis and rapidly propagates radially to the periphery of the necked section. During the propagation of the fracture, the metal at the rim of the minimum cross-section extends longitudinally and contracts radially. Thus values of 81, based on diameter measurements made after complete fracture of the specimens do not necessarily represent the strain at the initial fracture." Data obtained at the National Bureau of Standards with a 0.3 pct C steel in the condition as-quenched from 1575°F and tempered at 1000°F for 1 hr and tested in tension at room temperature indicated a considerable "rim effect" and as shown in Fig. 13, resulted in an apparent increase in Sf from 0.90 to 0.98. As the fracture strain of this steel is approximately equal to those of the steels reported by the authors, it seems probable that a similar "rim effect" may have added to the inaccuracies in the reported values of Si and accompanying values of El. R. Raring (authors' reply)—The authors are grateful to Mr. Geil for having called attention to a possible source of uncertainty in the determination of fracture stress, and they are in agreement with the principles upon which his discussion is based.

Operations Research developments within the mining industry have evolved over the last few years through stages typical of any new technique. By 1965, most companies had passed from mere recognition of the usefulness of operations research techniques to cautious acceptance of and, in some in- stances, to confident utilization of this relatively new tool. This is reflected in the growing interest and increasing participation of mining companies in sponsoring individual papers on the subject published in mining journals or presented in full sessions at annual meetings. Chief among the sources which served, in 1965, as a barometer for measuring operations research progress within mining is the Annual Symposium on the Applications of Statistics, Operations Research, and Computers in the Mining Industry, which is now sponsored by the University of Arizona, Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, The Pennsylvania State University, and the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. Two significant trends were evident in the applications of operations research techniques to problems typical of the mining industry. On the one hand, unique and imaginative O.R. applications were being developed by several companies, government agencies, and at the university level. These techniques were usually developed to solve specific existing problems. On the other hand, there was unmistakable evidence of attempts to look for problems which could be solved with those "operations research" approaches which would involve the use of the digital computer. In the latter instance, solutions may become applications or demonstrations of how the computer can be used in the reduction and interpretation of data, without the benefit of a decision model. This is a common tendency as most companies have computers, at least in their accounting sections, and many operations research solutions require the use of a digital computer. From the applications observed in 1965 and in prior years, the successful techniques have evolved.

THE process of recrystallization has not as yet been explained satis-factorily. Some definite conclusions could be drawn from recent investi-gations, such as, for example, that recrystallization is a process of nucleus formation and crystal growth 1and that the orientations of the nuclei correspond to some fragments of the original crystals, which have been considerably distorted during deformation.2 There are, however, a number of metals and alloys crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system, which form a particularly simple orientation if recrystallized as a sheet.3 Such a sheet is almost a single crystal with the cubic axes parallel to the rolling, transverse, and normal directions of the sheet. This preferred cubic or (100) orientation of the recrystallized sheet has been considered to be very different from the rolling structure of the same metals,4 but there are two reasons why this last supposition remains open to controversial discussion. The first reason is academic: In practically all cases except the one mentioned above, close correlations and similarities between rolling and annealing orientations have been observed; for instance, in iron and steel sheet.6 Secondly, no deformed metal actually forms a-simple orientation. In any thoroughly investigated case a number of different orientations and considerable scattering or deviations from the ideal orientations have been found., It is generally true that investigations on single crystals have shown that a definite orientation is approached in stretching or in compression of an originally undisturbed crystal.7 In the special cases, however, where the initial orientation was close to an important crystallographic direction that differed from the final "ideal" orientation, the resulting orientation changed very little by deformation, staying somewhere in the vicinity of the initial orientation." A series of studies of the corrosion of tin is under way in the Metals Research Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The complete program includes examination of the corrosion properties of high-purity tin and the changes produced in these properties by the addition of varying amounts of alloying elements. Other studies of this subject have been made recently under the sponsorship of the International Tin Research and Development Council, but these researches have been confined largely to the weakly acid environments commonly encountered in the canning industry.' There is little information available regarding the corrosion of tin under alkaline conditions, but such data would be of value, for a large amount of the metal is used under such conditions. The potential measurements to be described were made because they seemed to offer the most rapid method for obtaining a general view of the conditions to be encountered in such service. These experiments will also serve to establish a technique that will be of value in further studies. It must be emphasized that the results reported are those of controlled laboratory experiments and that the conclusions drawn cannot yet be applied to service conditions; rather, they point to the directions in which more exhaustive experimental work may be done to best advantage. Experimental Procedure The first work was devoted entirely to the problem of obtaining reproducible results from a series of potential measurements. Only the methods finally adopted as standard will be described here, except when the variations from these have furnished results of interest. The cell used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. PRORATION in the petroleum industry has come to mean a method for curtailing the production of crude petroleum by artificial effort, and it is in this sense that the term is employed throughout this paper. Although a contrived curb on supply has been invoked at various times in the past in particular fields and to meet specific situations, it is not until the past few years that this procedure has become general and assumed a dominant role in the oil business. In the sense that we now understand it, proration had its inception in the Seminole area of Okla-homa in 1927, from which time and place the practice spread to include practically all the flush oil fields of the country, especially those of California, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. At present there is perhaps no phase of the oil business that commands more attention than proration, nor one that engages more time and effort on the part of executives in the business. The practice of proration, indeed, has not only become an integral part of the policy of most companies and operators, but it has also taken on the aspects of a "movement" involving two schools of thought with considerable feeling, and at times some bitterness, on both sides. In this atmosphere it is difficult to find calm, dispassionate consideration of proration, for most discussions are either vigorous exhortations by its proponents, or else sharp condemnations by its opponents; although it appears that the majority of the industry is clearly "in favor of" proration. It is hoped that this analysis will be taken as an attempt to appraise the movement as an economic force, without bias and without regard to the incidence of the conclusions upon any preconceptions that the industry may entertain.

WHEN Mr. Cameron, the President of the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co., returned from Europe in 1929, he brought first-hand infor-mation about a very versatile type of hydraulic cement. It was not a new cement, many articles having been written about it in foreign journals, but in this country the record of this type of cement had been either neglected or minimized. Using local materials, and applying the information brought back by Mr. Cameron together with many data in numerous publications, the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co. developed the Santa Cruz high-silica cement. This cement is manufactured by grinding with portland cement clinker a properly calcined mixture of siliceous material and lime. It has all the utility of portland cement, together with an increased resistance to the destructive action of many aggressive solutions. To explain the necessity for the development of a cement having these characteristics, the history of hydraulic binding materials may be reviewed briefly. The materials used as binding media by primitive people were mud, lime, gypsum and bitumin. Due to its utility, ease of preparation, and its common occurrence, lime was the most widely used. Fat lime, when used by itself or with an inert sand, hardened only on the outside surface, where the carbonate was formed by absorption of carbon dioxide from the air, while, the interior of the mortar remained soft. It was quite early discovered that the incorporation of proper siliceous material with the lime increased its ability to harden, and for this purpose various natural siliceous powders were used, such as puzzo-lana in Italy, trass in what is now Germany, and santorin in Greece. These powders reacted with the lime forming a permanent cement and rendered unnecessary the access of carbon dioxide to the mortar.
