The results of a study of the open-hearth process from the physicochemical viewpoint are given. This study includes experimentation in small laboratory furnaces and in standard 100-ton furnaces. The behavior of manganese, carbon and phosphorus are quantitatively explained. The action of "residual" manganese is discussed with reference to its relation to iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The solubility of CO in steel and its relation to dissolved FeO and carbon is given. The equation for phosphorus elimination has been tested out on a 200-ton furnace and the results are given in the text. The effect of temperature and slag composition on the elimination of metalloids in the basic open-hearth process has been qualitatively understood since the early days of steel making. The quantitative effect has, however, only recently been brought to attention. The effect of slag composition has received more attention than that of temperature, primarily because the range of finishing temperatures in the basic open-hearth process is small compared to the large variations found in the composition of the slag at different periods during the process, and to the variations occurring with the use of raw materials of different degrees of impurity. The effect of slag composition on the elimination of metalloids has been studied by Styril from the thermochemical standpoint. This method is open to serious errors, in that thermochemical data at 2900' F. are very inaccurate and in many cases completely lacking. Feild2 has calculated equilibrium constants from the rate at which the metalloids are eliminated. The effect of slag viscosity on rate of elimination will affect the constants calculated by this method. Whitely,a Colcough4 and others have used slag compositions as the basis for calculation of constants by which the extent of elimination may be calculated.

Tun mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic limestones of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft. the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances away from the zone of contact metamorphism.

An understanding of the physical processes involved in breaking rock with explosives will lead to better blasting techniques. In this chapter known rock breakage principles will be outlined, some conjectural ideas will be discussed, and areas needing further study will be pointed out. The principles outlined will serve as a basis for the design of blasting rounds described in the following chapter. 7.2-1. Factors Important to Rock Fragmentation. The efficacy of explosives as tools for rock fragmentation lies in their ability to deliver almost instantaneously large amounts of energy to a limited portion of the rock. When an explosive charge is detonated in a drill hole, its energy is released in a very small fraction of a second in the form of gas at extremely high pressure and temperature. The mechanics of the transfer of this energy to the rock and the resulting breakage are complex and not completely understood. Factors that have been identified as important to the fragmentation process may be grouped in three categories: explosive parameters, charge loading parameters, and rock parameters. EXPLOSIVE PARAMETERS. Explosive parameters known to influence breakage are density, detonation velocity, detonation impedance, detonation pressure, gas volume, and available energy. Detonation pressure is probably the best indicator of an explosive's ability to break solid hard rock. Detonation pressure is roughly proportional to the product of density and the square of the detonation velocity. The relative ability of different explosives to transmit their pressure to stress in a given rock is function of their detonation impedances. Detonation impedance is the product of density and detonation velocity. The motives behind the organization of the Bureau of Safety were twofold. First, there was the policy of the company toward its employees, which was one of fairness and consideration for their welfare and which entails the prevention of injuries; second, in order to prevent injuries, a study of their causes was essential, and this study could be made only by a thorough systematic classification of accidents, which required a special department to form and carry out the plans. The Bureau of Safety was organized to begin operation Jan. 1, 1914, hut practically all of the first year was spent in collecting data, making plans, etc. This department is semi-independent of others and reports directly to the president and general manager. It consists of the president of the company and the managers of the following departments: Mines, Washoe Reduction Works, Great Falls Reduction Works, Coal department, lumber department, B. A. & P. railway; and the chairman of the Bureau of Safety. Working under this group is the General Safety Committee consisting of the manager of mines, as chairman, the general superintendent, two assistant general superintendents, and the heads of the following departments: mechanical, geological, purchasing, sampling works, and framing plant; and also the safety engineer. Operating under the General Safety Committee are the group safety committees, consisting of the Anaconda group of mines, Boston & Montana group of mines, zinc group of mines, Washoe reduction works at Anaconda, B. & M. reduction works at Great Falls, coal department, lumber department and the R. A. & P. railway. Each of these group safety committces was in charge of the superintendent or manager of the group represented and the committee consisted of the foremen of the mine's or works that the committee served, as well as the safety engineer. NUMEROUS results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,1 formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of struc-tures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In, tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of trans-mission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction;

In this investigation, the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama were examined by the use of "heavy solutions."' Ores are generally ground preparatory to concentration and as long as the concentrators make suitable products the effectiveness of the grinding is likely to be unquestioned; but when suitable products are difficult to make, an investigation becomes imperative. In such a case a dissection of the ore might be made to find the cause of the trouble. Such a condition of unsuitable products exists in the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama. They are difficult to concentrate. To be sure it might be said that the concentration of iron ores is a new thing and that the ore-dressing methods are undeveloped, but a glance at the industry reveals an abundance of methods and devices for almost all imlaginable conditions. Concentrating machinery has not been tested in this investigation. When the properties of the ores have been gleaned, the machinery may be used more effectively. Alabama Low-grade Red Iron Ores The Bureau of Mines has undertaken by laboratory methods to select the best means of concentrating the low-grade iron ores of Alabama. These ores constitute the parts of the ore bed left by selective mining. If more of the ore bed could be included in the current output, the mining cost would be reduced and longer life of the district would be insured. This advantage would be reflected by added permanence of churches, homes, schools and every undertaking in the commonwealth. THE Magma mine, of the Magma Copper Co., at Superior, Pinal County, Arizona, is 68 miles east of Phoenix and 21 miles west of Miami, Arizona, on highway U. S. 180. TEMPERATURES AND UNDERGROUND WATERS Surface Temperatures.-The average surface dry-bulb temperature at Superior is 72.4º; wet-bulb, 57.4º; with an indicated relative humidity of 38 per cent. The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the down- cast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2º to 3º in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. Average atmospheric conditions are shown in Fig. 1. Rock Temperatures.-Rock temperatures on the deeper levels of the mine are as follows: [ ] There appears to be no difference in rock temperature for any particular horizon of the various formations or in the vein. Water encountered is always the same temperature as the rock from which it flows, and for this reason it is thought that the water is heated by the rock; not the rock by the water. The country rock apparently has been heated by the various intrusions, perhaps the vein itself, and has not yet had time to cool off. The geothermal gradient (Fig. 2) as indicated by the rock temperatures given above is 1 ½ º per 100 feet. The presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent. of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. Part I.—Copper in Cyanidation The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent. of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results. Azurite, bornite, chalcocite, cuprite, malachite and finely divided metallic copper are readily and completely soluble under the usual conditions for cyanidation. Enargite and tetrahedrite are sufficiently soluble to cause an excessive loss of cyanide, and they also cause fouling of solutions with arsenic and antimony. Precious-metal ores containing small percentages of chalcopyrite or chrysocolla may give satisfactory returns with the usual cyanidation.

We cannot expect, within the limits of this paper, to treat this subject exhaustively, but will endeavor, in the following, to present it in as concise a manner as is consistent with a clear exposition of its importance. Ores of titanium, titaniferous iron-ores (that is, iron-ores containing a notable amount of titanic acid, TiO2,, say not less than 5 per cent., generally 10 to 20 per cent., and frequently more, up to 40 per cent. or thereabout), occur all over the world in immense quantity, " in mountain masses," constituting in some localities, as in Sweden, Norway, Canada, the Adirondacks (N. Y.), in North Carolina and other States of the Union, the geological formation itself, the igneous rocks having, in many places, been so permeated with the metallic oxides as to justify their being called iron-ores. As a rule they are Bessemer ores, quite free from phosphorus and sulphur, though not invariably so. When the percentage of titanic acid is very high, that of the iron is low, but the proportions do not necessarily vary in the same ratio; that is, a rich ore may contain more titanic acid than one lower in iron. The percentage of iron varies, being as low as 35 to 36 per cent. in real ilmenite. It is more generally not less than 50 to 55 per cent., reaching often an average of 58 to 60 per cent., and as high as 63 to 65 per cent. It is obvious that if these ores were to be considered in the same light as other iron-ores, equally rich in iron, they would form an excellent stock for blast-furnaces for years to come, as their supply might be called inexhaustible, and they could

During the last decade the petroleum refinery engineer has made great progress in achieving a better understanding of the physical behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, with particular reference to their pressure-temperature-volume relationships, the mechanism of the evaporation of liquids, the condensation of vapors, including the changes in composition, and the heat effects accompanying them. With the new insight into the mechanism of movement of oil and gas through the formations in which they occur, achieved by the production engineer, it is clear that the latter will need to utilize in the solution of his own problems much of the information outlined above. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the portions of that information that seem most certain to prove of importance in production work. Properties of Pure Hydrocarbons While it is true that petroleum always consists of highly complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, none the less understanding of the behavior of the mixture must be based upon a knowledge of the properties of the pure components. However, in view of the tremendous number of hydrocarbons existing in petroleum, the determination and formulation of the properties of all of them would seem a discouraging task. The difficulty of the situation is increased by the undoubted facts that the overwhelming majority of chemical individuals in petroleum have never been isolated as pure compounds, none of their physical properties have been determined and even their chemical constitution is unknown. The situation would be hopeless were it not for the fact that certain extraordinary correlations of important properties of various hydrocarbons have been discovered which make it possible to predict those properties for a given chemical individual on the basis of a very limited characterization of it. THE method developed and used in this laboratory for the production of metallic uranium of such purity that it is ductile and can be cold-worked to fine wire or thin sheet by rolling has already been described1. It consists, briefly, in the electrolysis of potassium uranous fluoride (KUF5) in a molten bath composed of equal parts of sodium and calcium chlorides. The bath is contained in a graphite crucible, electrically heated to about 775° C., the crucible serving as the anode for electrolysis. The uranium deposits in finely divided form mixed with salts upon a molybdenum cathode suspended axially in the crucible. Upon com-pletion of the electrolysis the cathode is removed and cooled, the deposit broken and leached to remove salts. The metal powder is washed with water and dilute acetic acid and dried in vacuo to reduce oxidation. Suitable amounts are then pressed into pellets and heated in vacuo by high-frequency induction, using a thoria crucible. The uranium melts and flows away from the pellet, leaving a shell, which is largely oxide. In general, this method produced a satisfactory metal, although at times the uranium was not ductile. The investigations recorded here were made to find the cause of this embrittlement. It was known that the metal generally contained carbon, derived from disintegration of the graphite crucible in which electrolysis is conducted, in amounts dependent upon the thoroughness of washing the metal powder. Accordingly, analyses of several samples, both ductile and brittle, were made by combustion and absorption of C02 in Ascarite, using air instead of oxygen to reduce the temperature and rate of oxida-tion. Several of these metals were made with special precautions to reduce carbon content. The results show no relationship between ductility and carbon content in the range investigated (Table 1).

To establish the minimum or break-even efficiency of a preparation plant it is necessary to determine the ratio of production costs per ton of run-of-mine coal to sale price per ton of clean coal. This ratio is then divided by the percentage of plant recovery. Assume, for example, that washability data indicate that 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal may be recovered as clean coal selling for $5.50 per ton. If the same plant incurs $4.00 per ton mining costs and $0.25 per ton preparation costs, the cost to sale price ratio would be 4.25/5.50, or 77.3 pct. Since the plant is capable of recovering 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal the minimum plant efficiency would be 77.3/80, or 96.6 pct. If the plant efficiency were increased to 100 pct the limit on preparation costs would be increased to $0.40. Therefore, the washing operation must be accomplished at a cost of $0.25 to $0.40 per ton and the efficiency must be 96.6 pct or higher. By plotting a curve of efficiency vs preparation costs and taking into consideration the plant cost, feed rate, operating costs, and yields of the various flowsheets it is possible to select a financially sound process. Table I classifies preparation processes according to their nature of separation. It must be remembered that what is thought to be ideal does not always prove practical under actual operation. An outstanding example is the work done on the plunger-type jig. It was determined by the law of equivalence that this unit could treat satisfactorily only sizes differing by no more than a ratio of 2. Yet these same plunger-type jigs are successfully treating sizes considerably greater than this ratio.

Over the past two years the Office of Surface Mining in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment, ENCORE Systems Inc., and Boeing Computer Services has developed the Economic Coal and Ore Reserve Estimation (ENCORE) Coal Seam Modeling System. This system is being used by OSM, certain states, and industry for mine planning and mine plan permit review. The ENCORE system enables the mining engineer to start at the reserve estimation stage of surface mine planning and continue through the entire mine planning process and into the permit preparation process. The ENCORE system enables the state and federal regulatory authorities to assess a given mining and reclamation plan permit application in a rapid and efficient manner and greatly speeds up the mine plan review and permitting process. The ENCORE system is user friendly and menu driven thereby permitting the engineer with minimal computer training to rapidly learn and utilize the system. Data are input both through digitized map files and bore hole information files and stored in a data base that is an integral part of the ENCORE system. The system performs reserve estimation through standard polygon methods, least square methods, and geostatistical (kriging) techniques. Geostatistical routines permit rapid evaluation of coal and overburden quality and quantity. System outputs include drill hole sumnary and resource summary reports, cross sections, isopach maps, structure contour maps, premining topography maps, postmining topography maps, and three-dimensional perspective views. The maps can be displayed on a high-resolution, color graphics terminal or generated by a high quality plotter and are suitable for direct inclusion in the mining and reclamation pl an permit application. This paper gives detailed examples of ENCORE'S use together with example outputs.

These impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel—especially steel made by the oxidation processes—the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished ar at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of' the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in conlmercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

Although chronologically the Sb-Bi system was the first one studied by the writer, the theoretical basis of the equations used in this paper is fully discussed in the writer's paper on the iron-carbon system,' because he believed that many would be more interested in the iron-carbon alloys. He suggests, therefore, that the reader consult that paper to familiarize himself with the theoretical aspect of the thermodynamic treatment outlined herein. This paper is divided into two parts: Part 'I deals with the Sb-Bi system and Part II deals with the lead-rich side of the Sb-Pb system. Although the former system has not much practical interest now, it has great theoretical interest in that it is the one system that for a long time was thought to have (and under specific conditions still has) an anomalous solidus, which no amount of physical investigation could adequately account for. The latter system, of course, is particularly interesting in the lead-rich end. It will be shown that the thermodynamic method is capable of predicting reliably the equilibrium position of the solidus, and thus acts as a check on the experimentally derived solidus. PART I.—THE ANTIMONY-BISMUTII SYSTEM In connection with his studies in thermoelectric phenomena,-the writer was naturally interested in the system Sb-Bi. In consulting the International Critical Tables2 he found the constitutional diagram shown in Fig. 1 (not including Ôtani's solidus), essentially after Cook,³ who investigated the system carefully by thermal analysis. Note the isothermal crystallization of alloys varying in composition from about 48 per cent, (by weight) to pure Bi. This is anomalous, because, according to the phase rule, in a binary system when only two phases coexist, there is univariant equilibrium; that is, the composition changes with the tempera-

Two dilute nickel alloys in each of the systems Ni-Al, Ni-Ti, Ni-Cr, and Ni-Si u:ere internally oxidized at 700° to 900°C for time periods up to 100hr to establish the oxide particle size, depth of oxide penetration, and the change in oxide particle size with depth. Fine (-270) mesh alloy powders were then intevruzlly oxidized, hydrogen sintered, compacted, and extrmded, yielding bar stock for tensile tests at room temperature and creep-mpture tests at 815° to 1093°C. Recrystallization studies were made up to 1400OC. ReCENT studies have clearly indicated that oxide dispersion strengthened alloys exhibit outstanding elevated temperature properties, espe- cially in long-time tests. Certain structural parameters must be observed to achieve optimum properties, namely, micron or submicron interpar-ticle spacing, submicron oxide particle size, and a high level of stored energy.'-5 A number of processes have been utilized to obtain the desired structures, but certain of them appear to offer greater promise. Thus far the most promising method is the internal oxidation of dilute alloys consisting of a relatively noble solvent metal and a readily oxidizable solute element.3'6)7 Several important principles governing internal oxidation have been established in earlier studies;' however, these principles are as yet not adequate to permit alloy development studies. Much of the earlier work was performed on relatively coarse wires or in idealized systems. As a result, there are still a number of unanswered questions which require considerable additional work: a) How does oxide particle size change with depth of penetration of the oxide? How does this vary with the specific type of solute element? b) What is the effect of solute content on the average oxide particle size?

FOR blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flame make their use safer than that of non-permissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless. The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.1 This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district.

ALUMINUM forms not only binary compounds with most of the metallic elements but also forms many ternary or more complex constituents. Several of those occurring in the more important alloy systems have been identified under the microscope and the action of various etching reagents has, been carefully studied.' The determination of the structure and composition of these complex constituents is a matter of some difficulty and little information is available. X-ray crystal analysis offers a promising method for the study of such constituents. First, and of considerable importance, is the possibility of recognizing the presence of a given constituent by means more positive than microscopic observation. Evidence can also be obtained concerning the nature and composition of the constituent in question and ultimately it should be possible, at least in some cases, to describe the structure including the relative locations of the various atoms. In this paper some results of an uncompleted study of the constituents of the aluminum-iron-silicon system are given and the methods employed are described. Inasmuch as iron and silicon are the chief impurities in aluminum, the constitutional relations of this system are of fundamental importance in the metallurgy of pure aluminum and its alloys; the system has been studied by several investigators and the more important contributions have been reviewed recently.2 Fig. 1 shows the structure of the aluminum-rich alloys after prolonged annealing at 560° C., in accord with one of the most recent investigations.3 The ternary alloys examined in the course of the present investigation were all annealed at 550° or 560° C.; in fact, some of the specimens were the identical ones used by Dix and Heath, who kindly supplied them for this work. Rock mechanics is a very new science. It has been accepted as a recognized discipline for some two decades, but it is only within the last five to ten years that it has been common to include the teaching of rock mechanics as a separate subject in undergraduate curricula at universities. Thus, few senior mining engineers practicing in industry, either men in charge of production or those engaged in mine planning and design, are familiar with the subject. That this unfamiliarity has continued so long is also due in part to the fact that the results of rock mechanics investigations have been published in a large number of different periodicals covering subjects ranging from experimental stress analysis to obscure branches of applied earth sciences. The first really useful textbook ' in the English language was published only in 1965, in Canada. It made available to students and to practicing engineers, for the first time in concise form, the essential body of accepted knowledge about rock mechanics and developed the theories on which it is based in a simple, clear and logical manner. Another factor which has resulted in rock mechanics science being slow to be accepted by the mining industry is that research work has often appeared to be esoteric and unpractical. Senior engineers have been reluctant to spend money on the application of new knowledge when the process of application seemed uncertain and ill-defined, and where the cost of field investigations (which is necessarily high) appeared to offer no certainty of economic reward. This is a reasonable attitude on the part of mining engineers; they are responsible to skeptical boards of directors whose chief concern is, very properly, the net return on capital invested. THE study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystalliza-tion has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans,2 who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakao,4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers,6 were of a. qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute some-thing to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.
