Moisture sampling of uranium ore should coincide as nearly as possible with weighing of the lot represented by the sample. This requires care by the sampler since the sample must usually be taken as a grab from each truckload as dumped. Correct proportions of coarse and fine material are necessary. A sample of at least 10 lb should be collected, placed in an air tight container, and promptly taken to the moisture determination room. Further, the sample should be dried for a minimum of 24 hr or until there is no further apparent loss of weight at a temperature no greater than 110°C.

Australian research scientists at the University of Melbourne's Institute of Materials Research have discovered two methods of extracting metals from raw ore, using brown coal. The discoveries could lead to extensive new markets for the brown coal producers of Australia (boasting the world's largest brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria), the United States and West Germany. Research on the extraction processes began at the University's Department of Metallurgy in mid-1969 under the direction of Geoffrey Cullen, manager of the Materials Research Institute. In June of this year. Cullen announced that both metal extraction processes, using brown coal, had proven successful.

IKE'S amiable expression and apparent sincerity impressed AIME members as did the theme of his talk. Cautioning against the gradually increasing power of the federal government, he said: . . . "freedom as we know it is in no greater danger from without than it is from our own lack of understanding of this creeping paralysis from within." Next February, it will be three years since he uttered these words at Annual Meeting welcoming ceremonies, but the theme was oft repeated in his winning campaign. This brush with the exalted, brief though it was, makes Washington look friendlier to many AIME members than it has for years.

AS part of a continuing program of liquid metals research, the densities of liquid lead, tin, zinc, cadmium, and indium have been measured by a pycnometric method. The pycnometers are made of high-density graphite to the design illustrated in Fig. l(a). In pursuing this research program, emphasis has been placed on detailed experimental care. As a result, claims are made for densities accurate to within ± 0.05 pct over temperature ranges varying from about 100± to 200°C above the melting point. In the Lead Belt, these jigs treat a larger tonnage than any other type of concentrating machine, and produce tailing of a larger size. The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells.

According to the June 27 issue of Business Week, Rep. Kearns (R., Pa.) introduced a bill in Congress along lines suggested by the National Society of Professional Engineers, to amend the Taft-Hartley Act to permit scientific, technical, and professional groups to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with management-with the protection and support of the federal law. The article reports that the bill is opposed by a loosely knit group of professional and technical unions, the Engineers & Scientists of America. This group wants Taft-Hartley amended to make it an unfair labor practice for employers to discuss collective bargaining matters with professional organizations.

Vertical Section of Glacial Morainic Material, containing Angular Masses of Banded Sand. Observed June 29, 1887, about 14 English miles south of Hellesylt, at head of Stor Fjord, near Aalesund, Norway. The accompanying figure reproduces my sketch. It was the angular and tilted blocks of sand in this glacial débris, or moraine, that particularly attracted my notice. Prof. Frank H. Probert, dean of the College of Mining of the University of California, visited the mining areas in the devastated regions as a member of the Bureau of Mines committee, which is studying the problems presented in the rehabilitation of mines there. He says that the absolute destruction of the coal mines in the Pas de Calais section makes it-necessary to use either the Westphalia or the Saar valley coal. The Saar mines, however, produce a poor quality of coking coal: therefore, it will not be possible to operate blast furnaces very efficiently unless provision is made for the introduction of better coal. The House Ways and Means Committee recently heard a bitter dispute over whether gasoline with lead is a worse pollutant than gasoline without lead. The lead industry is also squarely in the middle of this dispute for obvious reasons. Lead used in gasoline amounts to 270,000 tpy, or more than 254 of the annual total mined in the U.S. Few industries can face the loss of such a market without wondering how they are to stay in business. The lead industry picked up unexpected support in this dispute, however, when the AFL-CIO stepped up with outright opposition to the President's proposal to tax lead in gasoline.

Since the art of comminution has lain practically dormant for many years, it is very interesting that R. T. Hukki approaches the subject with a new concept. One is reminded of the research carried on by A. W. Fahrenwald of Moscow, Idaho, a few years ago. Fahrenwald mounted a steel bowl on a vertical shaft. The balls and ore placed in the bowl were rotated at fast speeds, thus simulating the supercritical speeds used by Hukki. The rolling action of the balls against the smooth shell liner has pretty much the same effect. The action is horizontal in one case and vertical in the other. Both researchers report good grinding activity.

ROLIN1 in 1961 published a phase diagram for the CaF2-Na3AIF6 system in which substantial (-20 wt pct) solid solubility of CaF2 in Na3A1F6 at the eutectic temperature (945°C) was indicated. The evidence was that the halt in cooling curves associated with the eutectic was lowered progressively on the Na3AlF6 side. H olm2 has recently confirmed the experimental fact, but attributes it to evaporation losses shifting the composition into the ternary NaF-CaF2-Na3A1F6 system with a consequent lowering of the eutectic temperature
