(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing. It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but. Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper: "Almost all rocks are traversed-by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as clue in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure-and-movement within the crust."1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of. the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the 'water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from. moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as " shrinkage " jointing. The terra "shrinkage" is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both. before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting.

In the brief period from November 1936 to September 1937, the Wilmington oil field developed far beyond all expectations. Decline in some wells appears very rapid, but it is too early to draw definite conclusions, as the majority of wells are maintaining very large and steady output. Heavy curtailment in the central area, which has developed the largest wells, makes it impossible to arrive at a satisfactory estimate of decline. The field is producing oil from the Repetto (lower Pliocene) and Puente (upper Miocene) formations, which are of the same age as formations producing at Torrance, El Segundo, del Rey or the marginal fields of the Los Angeles Basin. All of these fields are underlain by schist. The Long Beach field, northeast of Wilmington, is productive throughout 3000 ft. of Repetto-Pliocene series and also approximately 3000 ft. of Miocene formations, whereas at Wilmington only 700 to 800 ft. of Repetto and 2500 ft. of Miocene formations contain oil and gas. This paper gives a brief summary of the history and development of the field to Sept. 15, 1937, showing the subsurface conditions as they exist with the field only partly developed. History of Development The Wilmington oil field, 20 miles due south of Los Angeles, adjacent to Los Angeles harbor and about midway between the cities of San Pedro and Long Beach (Fig. 7), was producing oil as early as 1932 and only came into prominence as a major oil field of Southern California in the fall of 1936, when the General Petroleum Corporation of California completed Terminal well No. 1 from the upper Miocene, at a depth of 3625 ft., for a daily production of 1500 bbl., 20" gravity A.P.I., thereby establishing discovery of the Terminal zone. THE application of electric power for driving, mine hoists handling heavy loads at high speeds has recently been extended by the installation of what is probably the largest electrically driven hoist in this country at the Granite Mountain shaft of the North Butte Mining Co., Butte, Mont. While the weight of rock which is hoisted by this machine is not the largest now being handled by electric mine hoists, the speed of hoisting is so, and the combination of the high speed with the heavy load has resulted in a machine of considerable interest to all those actively engaged in mining. Aside from mere consideration of size, this installation deserves attention because of the careful attention given, not only to the question of economy of operation, but to the details of construction and installation of the entire equipment. The conditions to be met in this installation were as follows: Weight of rock to be raised per trip, 7 gross tons 15,680 1b. Weight of skip 8,0001b. Weight of cage 1,8001b. Maximum depth of hoisting 4,000 ft. Diameter of rope 153 in. Total weight suspended on one rope from drum 42,000 1b. Normal hoisting speed 2,700 ft. per minute. Maximum hoisting speed : 3,000 ft. per minute. Desired capacity-200 tons per hour from 4,000 ft: depth. The ore is mined in several levels and hoisting is carried on from the 800-ft. level down to the 2,700-ft., which is at present the maximum depth from which the ore is raised regularly. Development is proceeding and a depth of 2,900 ft. has already been reached. The rock is handled underground in cars holding ¾ ton, and about 10 cars are the usual load for a skip. All of the ore is clumped into underground bins, which are of different capacities varying up to 250 tons. From the bins the ore is fed into the skips without passing into measuring pockets. In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? The least distinguished name in the following list has added to the world's knowledge enough to satisfy the desire for fame of any ordinary man. This constellation is made up of:

The early records of coal in Kentucky by Walker and Gist have already been mentioned. Thomas Hutchins was aware of it in 1778, or perhaps several years earlier, as in writing of the Buffaloe, now Green, River, he said, "several persons who have ascended this River, say, that Salt Springs, Coal, Lime and Free Stone etc. are to be found in a variety of places."1 The next record found is an entry to Ellis and Marshall, of 878 acres on Coal Bank Creek, in the, then Fayette County on July 14, 1784.2 The settlement might have been made, or the name given, some time before. Hermeline, in 1783, mentioned iron ore and coal on the Green River,' although he had not been west of the Susquehanna River; his knowledge of coal might have come from Hutchins, although the latter made no mention of iron in that locality. In November 1790, coal was mined on Sturgeon's Creek in Lee County and floated in three barges down the Kentucky River to Cleveland's Ferry, where it was hauled to Lexington. The results were not equal to the expectations, and it was 1793 before the experiment was. repeated 4 In 1791, the estate of Samuel Wharton advertised for sale 31,000 acres "in the county of Jefferson, on the North Side of the Green or Buffaloe river, in the State of Virginia."5 In November 1795 three patents were issued for land in the then Lee County, aggregating 130,000 acres. These patents cover much of Harlan County. The descriptions of these surveys mention passing stone coal. on Rough Branch of Martin's Fork, a "great deal of stone coal" on Blacksnake Branch of Pucketts Creek, and "a quantity of stone coal" probably on Crummies Creek.6 Jedediah Morse, in The American Gazetteer, 1798, said that in Kentucky "in many places there are appearances of potter's clay, and coal in abundance." In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

The Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. of Texas is situated 45 miles south of Marfa, Texas, a town on the Southern Pacific R. R., and lies approximately 20 miles north of the Mexican border. Communication with the railroad is maintained over a state highway. All supplies for mine and mill are hauled in by truck from Marfa and precipitates and concentrates are freighted to the railroad by the same means and shipped to Selby and El Paso, respectively. The mill is at the town of Shafter, 1 mile from the mine and at approximately 350 ft. lower elevation. The ore is conveyed to it by an aerial tramway which requires practically no power on account of the difference in elevation. The mill is a countercurrent decantation cyanide and gravity concentrating plant of 200 tons daily capacity. Coarse and fine crushing are done at the mill. Two neal-by shallow wells in the bed of Cibolo Creek furnish an abundance of water. Power is generated for the mill and town by a Diesel engine plant. Ore Treated The ore is oxidized and siliceous. The greater part contains approximately 16 oz. of silver per ton, but mixed with this are many particles of ore of much higher grade, assaying in many instances 100 oz. or more. In the 16-oz. material there is an almost constant amount of silver which is difficult to recover by cyanidation. The high-grade material contains a much greater proportion of silver which is easily amenable to cyanide treatment. Thus, as the grade of ore becomes higher, the percentage of recovery of silver increases rapidly, under equal milling conditions. The silver minerals contained in the ore are principally argentite and cerargyrite, the former predominating The lead minerals, all of which are argentiferous, are chiefly cerussite and galena, with occasionally a little anglesite. RESEARCH, primarily, is finding out the truth. Research applied to engineering opens the door to new principles and processes, the application of. which benefits mankind in a material way. The engineer believes that investigation instituted with the primary view of making the results directly applicable to the industries is the highest type of research. Coal is essentially the basis of modern industrial civilization; therefore, any, considerable research pertaining to coal must link itself to the industry by, practical application of the results of the research. In other words, all investigational work connected in any way with coal leads to conclusions that permit a better understanding of the origin, nature of occurrence, composition, better and safer mining, more careful preparation, or greater efficiency in utilization of coal. Modern engineering research has been fostered essentially by universities and in the laboratories of institutions of learning. Coal problems that lend themselves to solution in the laboratories have been first attacked and are perhaps the farthest toward solution. For example, a great amount of research work has been carried out with the various phases of chemistry connected with coal. On the other hand, the equally important problems connected with methods of mining have received but little attention, primarily because their solution involves the continued use of a great and expensive laboratory, which is none other than the mine itself. As many of the problems already solved have had chemistry as their background, so many of the problems unsolved have physics as their background; there are also unsolved problems that deal in- coal economics. Even psychology must be called upon in future coal-mining research as a basis for solving those great problems that deal with human relationships. In general, considerable advance has been made in coal research dealing with chemistry, not so much progress has been made with problems having physics and engineering as a background, while there is a tremendous range of untouched problems that deal essentially with business and psychology.

Mr. BIRKINBINE's description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, cake, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a me has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a 'barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinduced the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is difficult to conceive that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents, above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc I merely claim that the phenomenta, as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient scaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. I would state my hypothesis to be that the stock lodged or collected in some of its upper sections during fie process of blowing-in, on which, as a basis, more or less accumulations may .have lodged, and thus, indirectly, caused the formation of the suc-

INVESTIGATION of the various rare earth-cadmium binary systems discloses the existence of a compound corresponding to the composition MCd6 in all systems save the La-Cd system. Lattice constants for all of the MCde compounds, except LaCd6 which apparently does not form, and PmCd6 whose synthesis was not attempted, are also recorded herein. Iandelli and Ferro 1 report the existence of the compound CeCd6. No additional information, structural details, and so forth are given. Elliott and Lemons2,3' have measured the vapor pressure of cadmium over CeCd6 and have calculated the activity of cadmium in solid CeCd6. These authors find that CeCd6 exists over a composition range from 5.967 to 6.098 (Cd:Ce ratio) at 584oC, and from 5.971 to 6.118 at 639°C. The following is an excerpt from the paper by Elliott and Lemons: 2 "Recently Mr. F. H. Ellinger of this laboratory has indexed an X-ray diffraction powder pattern of CeCd6.00 which we had prepared by gas phase reaction. The compound has a primitive cubic unit cell with a = 15.783 + 0.001A Based on the volume of the cubes surrounding an elemental cerium or an elemental cadmium atom, Mr. Ellinger finds room for 24.10 CeCd6 formula units in the CeCd6 unit cell; similar calculations based on CeCd2 and CeCd11 yield 24.18 formula units per unit cell. The presence of 24 CeCd6 units per unit cell seems probable with an X-ray density of 8.255 grams per cubic centimeter. The most one can say about in-terstitial~ is that there appears to be room in the crystal even at room temperature." THE development of a proper treatment for shells in connection with war contracts has brought to our attention the fact that the temperature of the liquid bath in which steel is quenched has a decided influence on the speed of cooling in the case of some liquids and very little in the case of others. Widely different physical results have been obtained by the use of water spray, water immersion, and oil immersion and further experiment has shown that the quenching effect of water used as a spray or an immersion varies greatly with the temperature of the water. The present experiments were undertaken with the idea of obtaining information of a quantitative nature regarding the quenching properties of a number of liquids used commercially in hardening steel. The general features of such cooling media are common knowledge and in the literature may be found records of numerous attempts to evaluate the cooling power of a liquid when used as a quenching bath. Much, if not most, of the data given on this subject is in the form of a simple statement of the time required for a certain heated mass to cool between two arbitrary temperatures when immersed in the liquid, quite regardless of the path of the temperature change. Our own purpose has been somewhat different. We have attempted to isolate that property of these. liquids having to do with their ability to absorb heat rapidly, as distinct from the behavior of a considerable mass when exposed to different thermal environments. More specifically, from the data obtained through autographically recorded cooling curves of a small standard mass quenched under various conditions, we have tried to analyze the mechanism of heat absorption by the several liquids, measure the changes in its rate as a function of the temperature of the surface of transference, and ascertain the influence of the temperature of -the liquid itself upon both.

A PRevioUs study1 of the relations of impact strength to inclusions showed that the dynamic strength of steel is lowered by the presence of visible counted inclusions, but that other factors comprised in the term "body" have a marked influence. The previous work was carried out on selected steels from a single source, so that the body factor was purposely minimized, but even under these conditions it was found that inclusion counting or the use of the commercial inclusion rating is not satisfactory. The tensile-impact test, however, was indicated as a satisfactory measure of dynamic strength. It was further suggested that the tensile-impact test should be so standardized as to be suitable for use in specifications, and that the hardness factor should be worked out over a sufficient range to admit ready commercial use of the tensile-impact test. In accordance with these suggestions, and in view of the fact that the steels reported in the previous paper were selected and treated so as to have a minimum variation in body, hardness and structure, further work has been performed on a variety of steels which are not limited by these conditions. The word "body" is used here for want of a better term. It is simply a convenient expression which comprises the effect, of the various unknown factors that modify the dynamic strength of the steel. Thus at our present state of knowledge, the writers have chosen to consider hardness, structure and counted inclusion content as factors not comprised in the term "body," and such factors as raw materials, process of melting, fabricating, etc., as comprised in the term "body." Numerous grades of steels made in several ways have been taken from different sources and have been heat-treated to varying hardness by normalizing and by quenching and drawing. The results, therefore, may be considered to be generally applicable to current engineering steels. Tan investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

RECENTLY Horace Freeman1 obtained a patent on a successful method of conducting a roasting procedure described as to general features by Carl Schnabel2 almost forty years ago. Essentially, the Freeman process of roasting consists in introducing the finely powdered sulfide mineral, suspended in air or any other suitable gaseous medium, into the upper portion of a heated chamber. The stream of suspended particles is directed vertically downward. A counter-current stream of gas introduced at the bottom of the chamber flows upward. The mineral particles are oxidized as they fall through the heated atmosphere of the chamber. All air required for the oxidation may be admitted either at the top or the bottom of the chamber, or may be divided between the top and bottom inlets in any desired proportion. Heat may be recovered by passing the gases leaving the furnace through a waste-heat boiler or other form of interchanger. In speaking of the results obtained in roasting pyrite, Freeman says:3 Steam yield from the boiler exceeds 1 pound of steam per pound of pyrite con-sumed, which pays the cost of operation of the burner. The oxide produced is in the form of fused particles or hollow shells of magnetite, containing about 65 per cent of iron. It contains the gangue material ordinarily produced in flotation concentrate, of course, but it is being found that most of this can be eliminated by magnetic separa-tion, and that the sulfur content, as consistently produced, is below 0.2 percent. This material is especially interesting as a high-grade iron ore, free from phosphorus and low in sulfur. It may be sintered or briquetted. It is even more interesting as a raw material for sponge-iron production, to be directly smelted in electric furnaces without the usual cooling of the iron powder and magnetic separation between the reducing kiln and the electric furnace.

INTRODUCED in 1946 to serve a need in power- plant operation, closed-circuit TV has been used by well over 200 organizations in approximately 25 different industries. Known as industrial television, or simply ITV, it can be described as a private system wherein the television signal is restricted in distribution, usually by confinement within co-axial cable that directly connects the TV camera to one or several monitors, Figs. 1, 2. The picture is continuous and transmission is instantaneous, permit- ting an observer to see an operation that may be too distant, too inaccessible, or too dangerous to be viewed directly. Destructive testing or the machining of high explosives can now be conducted hundreds of feet away by personnel who still have close control through the eyes of the TV camera. It is also possible for one man to control operations formerly requiring the co-ordinated efforts of several workers. For example, at a large midwestern cement plant conveyance of limestone from primary crusher to raw mill and loading into five storage bins once necessitated the work of two men, one having little to do but prevent spilling of material by manually moving the tripper on the belt conveyor as occasion required. TV cameras mounted on the tripper now provide bin level indication to the conveyor operator at the crusher position so he is able to control the entire loading operation remotely, Fig. 3. By means of a switch, the picture from either camera is alternately available on a single viewer, or monitor, Fig. 4. Each camera is mounted on the tripper by means of a simple adjustable support and looks down into the bin, which is identified by the number of cross members on the vertical rod. Each associated power unit is located on a platform above the camera, Fig. 5. This centralized control by means of TV often has produced superior results, and in many instancés saving in operating costs has been sufficient to write off equipment costs within six months to a year.

Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. In this case, a careful furnace tender tries to avoid overheating the metal by keeping a mild fire; that is, a reducing fire which, unfortunately, results in gassing the metal. A dirty, slaggy furnace may result in gassing the metal by retarding the heating and prolonging the time necessary to bring the metal to the proper temperature, thereby increasing the chances of gassing in uncertain furnace atmosphere. It is doubtful whether rnetals of low quality have anything to do with gassing molten metal, except, possibly in the case of metals containing

THOUGH the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more com-mon types. No new investigational data are included, but the deduc-tions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines1. DEFINITION OF TYPES There are three primary types of fuel beds: (1) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in .which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed hori-zontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

George IV. Goetz, Milwaukee, Wis.: Mr. Campbell deserves much credit for his interesting paper. The literature of the development of the open-hearth process is distributed in many technical journals, and is difficult of access to many engineers. Since the development of the basic process, the open-hearth furnace has been raised from a subsidiary to an independent position. Certain high grades of soft steel can be produced in the basic open-hearth furnace, which cannot be produced by any other known process. In the United States the charges for the acid process generally consist of either scrap and pig-iron or so-called wash-metal and scrap : the pig-and-ore process, as carried out in England, is practiced but very little. The introduction of the basic process has made it possible to use about four times as much pig-iron with scrap as can be used in the acid mixtures. The availability of a cheap pig-iron, very low in silicon and sulphur, and carrying several per cent. of manganese, is one of the reasons why the basic open-hearth process has developed so rapidly in Germany, as regards the output per furnace and the excellent quality of the material produced. The acid Bessemer steel has an inherent stiffness, which is plainly shown when spring steel is made by the Bessemer and by the openhearth processes. In order to get them of about equal stiffness, the open-hearth steel must have about 0.60 per cent. carbon ; whereas, the Bessemer steel must then have ahout 0.45 carbon, the remaining constituents being apparently about the same in each product. It has proved impracticable, with American coke-pig-iron, to interrupt blowing at a certain point in order to make hard steel; and experience has therefore shown that it is best to eliminate nearly all the carbon, and then to recarburize to the desired point. The growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.
