HE majority of liquidus and solidus surfaces in phase diagrams have been determined by the conventional cooling- and heating-curve techniques.' These techniques have two main shortcomings: 1) the solidus may be in considerable error due to the difficulty involved in completely homogenizing the solid and 2) the determination of liquidus and solidus in more than a two-component system does not enable one to determine tie-lines connecting the specific equilibrium solid and liquid compositions. However, in a recent paper by one of the authors,' a method was suggested whereby the liquidus and solidus surfaces plus tie-lines in an n-component system may be determined. This method utilizes a controlled solidification technique and assumes that interface equilibrium exists during freezing. The present work was undertaken with a twofold purpose; first, to determine the liquidus and solidus lines in the pseudo-binary system Bi2Te3-Bi2Se3 by heating- and cooling-curve techniques and, second, to determine the partition coefficients of Te and Se in the BizTe3-,Sex system by controlled solidifica- tion techniques. The two sets of results can be compared to test the accuracy of the controlled solidification method. EXPERIMENTAL I—The starting materials for this study were 997999 pct Bi, Te, and Se, obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The compounds BizTe, and Bi2Se3 were each prepared by melting together stoichiometric amounts of the elements, followed by twelve zone-refining passes. This produced homogeneous bars of the compounds for use in the phase-diagram studies. The apparatus used to obtain heating and cooling curves is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The alloy samples were located in a graphite crucible placed in a stainless steel canister. The canister was supported in a heavily lagged pit furnace by a device which oscillated the canister about its vertical axis at a frequency of about 3 cycles per sec during heating and cooling-curve runs. The graphite crucible was designed to minimize the thermal coupling of the sample to the furnace. THE object of this paper is to record and tabulate the data and field observations obtained by the writers and their associates during 10 years of intensive study of lead-zinc deposits in the Cretaceous limestone areas in Northern Mexico, particularly in mines owned by the Cia. Minera de Peñoles, S. A. At the El Paso meeting of the Institute in October, 1930, J. G. Barry made the suggestion that a committee be appointed to correlate the ideas and theories which have been put forth by the numerous engineers and geologists who, during recent years, have made a study of the ore deposits in the area under consideration. The first step in a work of this nature would be to record all of the observed facts, and these facts would have to be accepted by those who attempted to formulate a theory of ore deposition. It is with this idea in mind that the writers have described as accurately as possible the actual, observed facts pertaining to the occurrence of the lead-zinc ores in dolomites or dolomitic horizons. By most writers the term "dolomite," is loosely used to designate magnesium-bearing limestones, regardless of the percentage of MgO present. Since no, true dolomites exist in the areas to be described, we shall also loosely use the terms dolomite or dolomitic limestone to designate those beds having a magnesia content of 5 per cent MgO or more. For a number of years the writers have been impressed with the fact that in areas where dolomite beds occur a large percentage of the lead ore is found in these beds, in spite of the fact that such beds may be overlain or underlain by pure limestone, which one would assume to be just as favorable for replacement as the dolomite, if not more 'so on account of its being more soluble in acid solutions than the dolomite. It is true that in some limestone areas, such as the Erupcion-Ahumada districts, Chihuahua, and Providencia, Zacatecas, where no dolomite beds have been found, large tonnages of lead ores have been mined. In tank-lixiviation, the extraction of the silver from chloridized ore by solutions of hyposulphite salts is performed by filtration. The ore-particles are kept stationary, while the solvent moves down through the mass of ore. The quickness of extraction, other conditions alike, is in direct proportion to the rapidity of the movement of the solvent through the ore. The solution, if left in contact with the ore without moving, displays but very little solving energy. If the filtration is interrupted for ten or twelve hours, and thus solution and ore are left in complete contact for that length of time, it mill be found that, when filtration is started again, the outflowing solution is but very little more saturated with silver than it was at the time of interruption, and that the ten or twelve hours were almost a perfect loss in the total time of extraction. Notwithstanding the long contact, the solution had not become saturated with silver chloride to its full solving capacity. A rapid movement of the solvent through the ore is essential to a quick extraction. This fact is well known ; and the endeavor of leachers has been to hasten extraction by increasing the rate of filtration. Siphons, vacuumpumps and other devices have been used with more or less success; but none of them have given full satisfaction. I have found that, if chloridized ore is brought into rapid contact with a proper volume of moving sodium hyposulphite solution, the silver chloride contained in the ore dissolves almost instantly, and that it is rather the volume of the solvent than its concentrated state which produces this effect. Such favorable conditions cannot be attained in tanks. The rapidity with which a certain volume of the solvent can be brought into contact with the ore-particles is limited by the speed with which the solution descends through the ore; and thus the leaching-time in tanks cannot be shortened beyond the limit set by the filteringcapacity of the ore. During the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth—why and how it occurs—were treated in papers by Howe,' .Jeffries,² Sauveur,² Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 Mc Adam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,l0 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size sperified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filamentsl1 wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,'? in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels,14'15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is

RECOVERY of selenium and tellurium at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co. has been previously described by the writer.1 During 1935 a new building was erected to house this operation and description of the new plant and process form the subject of this paper. The building, of modern steel and tile construction, covers an area of 5900 sq. ft. with a volume of approximately 165,000 cu. ft. The large monitored center bay is flanked by two smaller outside bays, one of which is devoted to the tellurium section. All equipment, ceilings and upper walls, are treated with aluminum paint, giving good illumination and facilitating good housekeeping, essential from a health standpoint in handling material of this nature. EQUIPMENT Layout and type of equipment conforms to the requirements of the process as described below. In the selenium section, storage tanks, neutralizing tanks and precipitators are of steel construction, lead-lined and. arranged for gravity flow (Fig. 1). The neutralizing tanks are equipped with water-cooled lead coils for controlling solution temperature, agitation being accomplished with compressed air. The precipitators are provided with mechanical agitators, and sulphur dioxide is introduced into the solution through 3-in. lead pipes leading from a manifold attached to the cover of the precipitator. Each precipitator has internal cooling coils and an air-jet exhauster to carry off fumes. Neutralized solutions are filtered in a 29-plate wooden filter press using heavy cotton duck as a filter medium, forced feed being maintained by a Welmet centrifugal pump. Dilute solutions are concentrated by evaporation in a vacuum evaporator, constructed of cast hard lead. Heat is supplied by an outside steam chest operating under 15 lb. steam pressure. The solution is circulated through the steam chest by a pump of antimonial lead at a rate approximating 400 cu. ft. per min. The evaporator is evacuated by a water-jet condenser that creates a vacuum of 26 in. of mercury under normal operating conditions. The capacity of the vessel is 60 cu. ft. and the rate of evaporation 25 cu. ft. per hour.

Metal mines were developed long before coal mines and the early lighting of underground workings was effected by torches and candles. The early coal mines were outcrop workings and little trouble was experienced from gas, but as the mines became deeper and shaft mines were opened it became apparent that an open-fame lamp was exceedingly dangerous where gas occurred. No satisfactory way of lighting gaseous coal mines was found until Sir Humphrey Davy brought out his famous safety lamp in 1815. The introduction of the Davy lamp was a great step forward but it was unsatisfactory from a light standpoint because the gauze absorbed a large percentage of the light given out by the flame. Clanny corrected this by the introduction of a cylindrical glass lens, which not only permitted a free distribution of the light from the flame but added greatly to the safety by eliminating the possibility of the flame coming in contact with the gauze and by protecting the flame against air currents. A very complete story of the flame safety lamp since its inception is given in the U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 227, by J. W. Paul, I;. C. Ilsley and E. J. Gleim, published in 1924. A little more recent publication, known as Safety in Mines Research Board Paper No. 4, entitled "The Light Power of Flame Safety Lamps," by R. V. Wheeler and D. W. Woodhead, was published in England in 1927. The flame safety lamp was the only lamp available for gaseous mines for about 100 years. Although the incandescent electric lamp has been in use over 50 years, it was not found safe to use this lamp from wired circuits in gaseous locations. The storage battery was advocated shortly after the development of the incandescent lamp but until the introduction of the tungsten filament in the miniature mine-lamp bulb, the battery lamp was not a real possibility because of the excessive weight of the battery necessary to produce a sufficient amount of light. In reviewing petroleum development in Venezuela during the year 1936, it is well to bear in mind certain factors that affected progress, although not directly connected with the oil industry itself. At the start of the year, when the present Federal Administration took over the reins of government, reaction against the former regime resulted in some popular uprisings. Although these were entirely political in character, they were not without their effect on the oil industry itself. Such popular agitation really ended with a short general strike in Caracas, Maracaibo and other cities during June, these strikes being based on demands for certain changes in government policies. The strikes were duly investigated and their motives taken into consideration by the executive power or by Congress, and during the year many of the civil, political and administrative laws have been revised. In June and December, however, it was necessary to suspend activities in drilling and production work, particularly in the Lake Maracaibo Basin area. In June a strike caused a five-day shutdown in the main producing fields and on Dec. 14 labor difficulties resulted in a shutdown that continued to the end of the year, which necessitated suspension of all drilling and production in the Lake Basin area and curtailment of shipments to deep-water terminals. Actually, the strike lasted for a period of 42 days, until Federal intervention brought the dispute to a close with minor wage increases to workers hut with no loss of initiative or independence on the part of the oil companies. Operations in eastern Venezuela were not affected by the labor disturbances, production and exports having been reduced in December only in the Lake Basin fields. Well Completions On Jan. 1, 1937, a total of 3384 wells had been completed throughout Venezuelan fields, as compared with 3094 on Jan. 1,1936. Of these wells, 2005 were producers. The 290 completions effected during 1936 were by the following operating companies: Lago Petroleum Corporation, 123 completions; Dutch Shell group, 104; Standard Oil Company of Venezuela, 46; Mene Grande Oil Co., 15; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., 2.

The presence of nickel-chromium in pig iron made fro111 Cuban oles is so well known that the word "Mayari" is unconsciously associated with it. Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. Tlie Transactions contain numerous references to t1ieln.l This iron ore, which is shipped to the Tinited States in the nodulizecl state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. In recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. Production of Fly-ash The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. INTRODUCTION Conditions for formation of porphyry copper deposits appear to have been propitious in the Appalachian orogen from the end of Precambrian into Middle Ordovician, and again from Middle Devonian into Mississippian. In the Appalachians we can now record the evolution of a porphyry copper province within a developing orogen, one that reached metamorphic and structural maturity by the end of Devonian. Fig. 15, after Irwin and Coleman (1972), locates that portion of the Appalachian orogen included in this study, and Fig. 16 illustrates general geology of the area. Deposits mentioned in Table 3 and in the text are shown in Fig. 16. Data presented summarize personal observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas noted in the bibliography, and abstracts from Provincial assessment files. Sources of previously published data are acknowledged. Few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits in this area exist, so much of the data presented is new to the literature. Porphyry mineralization has, for this chapter, been restricted to porphyry copper de- posits, although porphyry molybdenum de- posits (Clark, 1972) are also shown in Fig. 16 (Hollister, et al., 1974). Copper- molybdenum and tungsten-molybdenum skarns are also omitted to simplify discu sion, though each is known in the area studied. Gaspe Copper is included, however; min- eralization in this deposit is present in the intrusion as well as in the skarn adjacent (Bell and Scott, 1954). Porphyry deposits listed in Table 3 are included because of some important feature, although other deposits have been reported (e.g., Kirkham and Soregaroli, 1975 ) . Clearly, no table now compiled could be complete. The pace of exploration insures that new occurrences will probably be found. Summaries of features exhibited by intrusions shown in Table 3 should remain valid, however, since they appear representative and are based on an adequate number of deposits in the area studied. Paleozoic porphyry copper prospects (shown in Fig. 16) are more common, apparently, in the northeastern part of the orogen, rarely having been found south of Catheart or west of the Logan Line. Before the year 1909, no measurements of dust losses and flue gases had been made at the Copper Queen Reduction Works, at Douglas, Ariz. At that time the "unaccounted" loss of the smelter had reached a figure that drew attention to the possibility of large stack losses. The measurement of dust losses had not been studied much at that time, and estimates of dust losses, with a few exceptions, were the results of tests by what has been termed '(chemical methods," that is, the aspiration and filtration through cotton, wool or some similar medium of a few liters of gas, the dust being weighed on a chemical balance, and the volume of gas computed from the volume of aspirator water. The possible error of this method is enormous, and the probable error much too large for reliable results. Since the object of these tests was to discover not only the extent of the dust losses, but also the possibility of profitably reducing them, it was decided that the method adopted must have the following characteristics: 1. The sample of gas taken for filtration must be representative of the whole volume of gas, that is to say, it must have the same dust content. This condition will be fulfilled in all cases if the gas sample is drawn off without change of rate of flow. Then it will contain the same proportion of entrained or suspended particles of dust as the original gas. In the case of flue gases which contain only fume, at a temperature above or near the sublimation point, this condition need not be adhered to since the fume will not behave as entrained particles, but more nearly as a true gas. Consequently the gas sample in this case only may be drawn off at any rate of flow. 2. The gas sample taken must be large enough (a) to yield sufficient dust to permit of accurate chemical and physical examination; (b) so that the ratio of the total volume of gas passing through the flue to the volume of gas sample taken shall not be too large.

The mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic 1imestones.of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district, it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft., the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock, the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances a way from the zone of contact metamorphism. The copper was probably introduced during or slightly later than the porphyry intrusion in the form of chalcopyrite and bornite. These primary copper minerals are always associated with pyrite and often occur as rich lenses in a huge mass or shell of pyrite carrying an insignificant percentage of copper. In many instances the copper-bearing solutions were preceded by siliceous solutions and these latter, often persisting during the period of mineralization, have thoroughly indurated the ore-

WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillip,1 six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 2 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as. forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change in table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed kith water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. The rate of scale fot'~I~ti0n on tantalum held in H20-Hz-Ar gns mixtures at temperatures between 840" and 1250°C is related to gas composition and ternpevature. It is found that water vapor partial pressure determines the oxidation rate at a given temperature and that the oxygen potential as fixed by the water vapor to hydrogen ratio Ins no significant effect on the oxidation rate. The Ta205 scale formed during oxidation is composed of an inner lattice-dijf~ision barrier and an outer layer of- cracked/porous oxide 1 HE oxidation of tantalum at temperatures less than 800°C is characterized by solution of oxygen into the metal,'-' the formation and growth of suboxides into the metal,')2~10-15 and the delayed nucleation of the highest oxide, Above 800°C, Ta205 is found to nucleate rapidly10, 11, 15, 16 except at low oxygen pressures:15 however, there is uncertainty regarding which does not retard the oxidation process. For each gas con~position and temperature investigated, the oxidatioz rate becomes constant after a short adjustment period. It is shozm that a constant oxidation rate nzay pre~?ail even though the tlzickness of the inner lattice-dijjitsion layer of Ta205 is clanging. Peterson, Fassell, and wadsworth17 observed linear oxidation behavior for tantalum in oxygen at temperatures between 600" and 1000°C. They reported that equilibrium adsorption of 0, occurs on a surface prior to the rate-deter mining step of the reaction. Cowgill and stringer1' confirmed the observations of Peterson and his coworkers. They stated that the rate-determining step of the reaction could be either the incorporation of adsorbed oxygen into the anion lattice or the dissociation of 0, at the gas-oxide interface. During July 1941, a study was initiated at the Boulder City Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines on proposed methods for the production of magnesium metal. The major emphasis was placed upon development of a process that required minimum reliance upon the sale or utilization of by-products to meet economic competition from processes already in operation. It was felt that only through the development of such a process could the nation's vast resources of dolomite and low-grade magnesite that are contiguous to large blocks of firm power be properly utilized. During the course of exploratory tests on electrolytic and electrothermic processes, it was noted that fused magnesium chloride would dissolve appreciable quantities of magnesium oxide in the presence of small amounts of boric oxide. The use of such a solution in an electrolytic cell employing a graphite anode and a steel cathode caused the deposition of magnesium at the cathode and the evolution of carbon oxides at the anode with minimal amounts of chlorine The original results were sufficiently encouraging to justify further investigation on an enlarged scale, since the process seemed to present advantages over other proposed processes.1,2 for the direct use of magnesium oxide in a fused chloride electrolyte. When work oil a larger scale was initiated it was found that the addition of boric oxide to the electrolyte resulted in dispersion of metal and constantly decreasing current efficiency. However, by this time solubility studies had shown that magnesium oxide was sufficiently soluble in magnesium chloride melts containing no boric oxide to effect the same anode reactions, and development work was continued. Over two years of development work have been carried out, and considerable work remains to be done. It is desired to emphasize the fact that many of the difficulties met require a long period of continuous operation before they become serious enough to affect operation of the cell. More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. Those who have followed the rapid progress in rock-dusting bituminous-coal mines must admit that opinion crystallized during the year just closed in support of this preventive of coal-dust explosions. Up to 1924 only one mining company in America practiced rock-dusting on a large scale, but during 1924 forty-two companies had adopted this safety measure, and the "boom" is expected to extend over the next two or three years. Alabama is represented by 1 company, Colorado by 3, Illinois by 4, Kentucky by 1, New Mexico by 4, Pennsylvania by 20, Utah by 8, and Wyoming by 1. A total of about 500 miles of entry has been dusted. Illinois leads with 275 miles of dusted entries and Pennsylvania holds second place with about 175 miles. In each case there is a sense of great security, not only on the part of the operator but by the miner as well. It is also interesting to note that during 1924 the compensation rating or inspection bureaus in twelve of our coal-producing states revised their rating schedules so that a credit would be given for rock-dusting. This credit ranges from 10 to 20 cents per $100 payroll. Recent drastic federal and state regulations approved by mine operators made rock-dusting compulsory in bituminous coal mines in Utah, beginning July 1, 1924. Legislative action favorable to rock-dusting may be expected in other states. Colorado has already proposed a change in its laws, and Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, and West Virginia are giving the matter consideration. If the rock-dusting problem is handled properly and proves to be entirely successful, no mining man of any standing will delay applying it in his mine. State legislation regarding this matter may or may not solve the problem. At present, the mining companies that are rock-dusting of their own choice are doing it carefully and thoroughly. In Utah, some are doing it conscientiously, trying to get what benefits can be obtained while others are reported to be doing it only to keep within state regulations. In any event, if we are to have new legislation, it is essential that the various states know what they are about and then, if possible, work for uniform regulations.

Although several recent papers have shown that equilibrium contact angle in dodecylamine solution-quartz systems can often be directly correlated with flotation behavior, it appears that under conditions of relatively high amine strength and pH such a correlation can't be made. Under these conditions, when there are precipitated amine dipoles present, it appears that a dynamic contact angle formed immediately after introduction of fresh gas bubbles into the system is also of importance. The dynamic angle decreases in magnitude as a function of time. Apparently the decrease is the result of changes in interfacial tensions (liquid-gas and solid-gas) as a function of time. Dynamic angles of the type described can't be observed in trimethyldodecylammonium chloride solution-quartz systems. Several recent papers1-3 have shown quite conclusively that contact angle data can often be correlated directly with flotation behavior in cationic surfactant solution-quartz systems. At the same time, Iwasaki, Cooke, and Colombo4 have shown data for a dodecylammonium chloride solution-goethite system where, in the vicinity of pH 12 and a collector concentration of 10" M, 100% flotation occurs when equilibrium contact angle appears to be zero. A clue to this discrepancy can be found in the work by smith2 who reported the occurrence of dynamic, time dependent, contact angles in a quartz-dodecyl-amine solution system at relatively high pH values and at surfactant concentrations greater than or equal to 10-4 M. It was found that under these conditions, if a fresh bubble was brought into contact with a properly conditioned and polished quartz surface, a large angle was obtained. The large angle, however, instantly started to diminish in magnitude, sometimes to a smaller stable angle and sometimes to its complete disappearance. Also, if the bubble was preconditioned for some minutes (or sometimes even seconds) in the same amine solution, the smaller or sometimes zero stable angle was obtained when the bubble was brought in contact with the quartz surface. One is immediately led to the thought that perhaps it is these dynamic angles when they exist, not stable angles, that are of primary importance in flotation. The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a nine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. IN the decade beginning 1850, the development by William Kelly in I the U.S.A. and Henry Bessemer in England of the pneumatic method of refining pig iron, known as the Bessemer process, gave the world the first method of producing low-cost steel in large volumes. Briefly, the Bessemer process consists of blowing air through liquid blast furnace iron in a refractory-lined vessel known as a converter. The air enters the iron in the furnace bottom through tuyeres, and during its passage through the iron removes the carbon, manganese, and silicon by oxidation. The heat produced by oxidation is sufficient to raise the temperature of the liquid metal to normal steel casting temperatures and, in addition, to melt some scrap. In the 1860's, the open hearth process was introduced which in the early part of the twentieth century surpassed the Bessemer process in steel production. In the early 1870's, Thomas and Gilchrist discovered that phosphorus could also be removed if lime were added and the converter lined with basic refractory; the modification is known as the basic Bessemer process and is used in Europe. Bessemer steel usually contains between 0.010 and 0.020 per cent nitrogen and between 0.05 and 0.10 per cent phosphorus which influences the properties. Henry Bessemer,1 in 1856, recognized the possibility of using oxygen in the converter process, but the cost was prohibitive. This interest was associated with the theoretical balance of the Bessemer process. Experimental work' has indicated that bottom blowing with pure oxygen results in serious converter bottom and tuyere erosion. Dilution of the oxygen by steam has been observed to be an effective means of maintaining low-nitrogen content of the steel and at the same time reducing bottom and tuyere erosion. A further advantage is that the fume emission characteristic of Bessmer operation is reduced. The addition of steam to the oxygen, however, reduces scrap-melting capacity due to the endothermic reaction characteristics of steam.
