THE early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this .expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2;-A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes.

It may at first appear doubtful that any further ideas can now come from such a well-trodden soil, when we consider that the ground of the subject has been so thoroughly gone over in many of its phases and that observations have been recorded in technical journals, ever since the days when Luckow and his cotemporaries brought the electrolytic deposition of pure copper to the position of an exact scientific method. Certain facts, however, which seem worthy of note, have come under the writer's observation during an extended use of the method in a large refinery, involving frequent tests of refined Lake and electrolytic copper, and thousands of assays of native copper concentrates and tailings. This work has required a careful study of the conditions suited to the assay of refined copper, and of ores and tailings— conditions which must be varied for each particular case to secure the best results. Especially is this true when we come to the exact determination of pure copper in the high-grade refined metal of the present day. Very slight traces of impurities (especially tellurium, selenium, bismuth, tin, arsenic and antimony) seriously injure the properties of copper, notably its electrical conductivity. THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. : (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three I plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Sulfide iron content of ores treated varies from a [ ] low figure in some ores to 38 per cent. iron in Sullivan ore. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential flotation.

This paper comprises suggestions on certain points rather than a complete survey of the whole subject. In other words, it is a contribution to the kenera1 discussion invited by John Hays Hammond in his paper, presented as a Presidential address at the Chattanooga meeting of the Institute, in October, 1908.1 Mr. Hammond says, in conclusion: "... I am not offering a code, or even an official and representative declaration of principles.. My remarks are intended, and will, I hope, be accepted, simply as a contribution to that discussion of their theme in which every engineer of experience may participate." Such a discussion has been conducted in technical journals, as well as in contributions to the Transuctions of the Institute; and, in the remarks here offered, I shall have occasion to refer the read& to what I have thus published elsewhere, for more extended statements of my views. What Mr. Hammond says about loyalty to employers, the double capacity of the engineer as an employer, the expert witness, commissions on machinery, the statement that most swindling is done by laymen and not by engineers, duty to the investing public, and the engagement of local engineers as colleagues, it is a pleasure to indorse. It is well known that certain silicates such as the feldspars and beryl can be readily floated from quartz at a low pH value using a long chain cationic collector in the presence of a fluoride.1-3 However, the mechanism whereby the fluoride activates feldspars and beryl is not known. Indeed, only a few authors have even speculated about possible mechanisms.1,3,4 As a first approach to the problem, it is perhaps best to look closely at the interesting character of hydrofluoric acid and how it dissolves silica and silicic acid. Hydrofluoric acid, unlike hydrochloric acid, is a weak acid with a dissociation constant of about 3.53 x 10-4 at 25°C.5 The reason for the weak acidic character of HF lies in the very small size of the fluoride ion.6 The pKa value is 3.45 which means that at pH 3.45 half the HF is present in molecular form and half in ionic form. The anion present is probably HF2.-6 At pH values below the pKa value, molecular concentration increases rapidly at the expense of the HF2- anion. It is known that HF readily attacks glass, silicates, quartz and silicic acid. The equation usually cited pertaining to the first step in HF attack of silica is6-'

WHEN Georgius Agricola, in 155o, dedicated his now famous De re Metallica to the rulers of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and other, smaller principalities, he included in his review of previous works on similar subjects reference to two books written in German: one, an "anonymous, rather disorganized account of assaying for metallic content and of metals," which must be the Probierbüchlein, the other, "dealing - with veins, written by Calbus of Freiberg, a well-known physician."* Calbus is mentioned a second time-and cited-at the end of the Third Book of De re Metallica. Comparison of the citation with the Bergbüchlein leaves no doubt that Agricola considered Calbus of Freiberg the author of the latter work, although all the editions of the Bergbüchlein known now were published anonymously. It is generally accepted by those who have dealt with the bibliography of the Bergbüchleint that Calbus was Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe, who served the City of Freiberg, in Meissen, as health officer in 1497, as member of the City Council in 1509, and as mayor in 1514 and 1519. He died at Leipzig in 1523. In connection with the very garbled description of the mining compass toward the end of Chapter 3 of the Bergbüchlein it is of interest that von Kalbe is supposed to have been not only a physician of repute but a mathematician, astronomer, mine sur-

WHEN some materials are ground dry in a ball mill, a stage of comminution is reached at which the finely divided particles begin to adhere to the balls and to the mill lining. As grinding progresses, a coating accumulates upon the grinding media, which tends to cushion the impacts and thus retard reduction of the material, and finally becomes so thick that all grinding ceases. At this stage, the characteristic noise produced by the grinding media dur-ing normal mill operation changes to a dull, muffled sound. In most instances, the formation of the coating marks the practical limit of size reduction. Industrial requirements for fine grinding frequently meet with this obstacle, and the tendency in many com-mercial operations to grind materials to a higher degree of fineness than formerly makes the solution of this problem an im-portant one. The phenomenon is of far greater importance, therefore, than the limited amount of research and technical discussion devoted to it implies. In order to learn more about the coating of different materials when ground dry to a high degree of fineness, certain labora-tory tests were made from which it was found that different materials form coat-ings at widely different size distributions. It is probable that most materials will coat if they are ground fine enough; the exceptions have inherent lubricating qual-ities, like coal and graphite.

SUMMARY ONE of the important reserves of manganiferous iron ore is at Boston Hill, near Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of a faulted block of gently dipping Lower Paleozoic shale, dolomite, limestone and sandstone, which have been intruded by a roughly circular mass of quartz-bearing monzonite porphyry and subordinate dikes. From a noselike protuberance of the intrusion radiate many premineral faults, which have localized much of the hypogene mineralization. Three important stages of hypogene mineralization can be recognized: (1) mesitite, a manganiferous iron magnesite, (2) quartz sulphides, and (3) barite-galena. The carbonate stage is widespread but stronger near the intrusion. The quartz may have been derived from hydrothermal alteration of the igneous rocks. Barite-galena is most important in the Chloride Flat mining district, about one mile north, where argentiferous galena provided silver for the supergene ore. The hypogene carbonate, lean in iron and manganese, has been oxidized and consequently enriched by meteoric waters containing an excess of oxygen and carbon dioxide to form ore bodies of intimately mixed hematite and pyrolusite. The ore bodies, at one place attaining a length of 1600 ft., a width of 300 ft., and a thickness of 25 ft., are largely confined to areas of brecciation and to spreads from faults in Silurian dolomite beneath soft Devonian shale.

No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. THE name molybdena was employed by Pliny to denote various substances resembling lead. Later this name was applied to galena-the naturally occurring sulfide of lead-or substances of similar appearance. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was applied to graphite and to the mineral sulfide of molybdenum (MoS2) now called molybdenite. This confusion is quite understand- able inasmuch as these substances look and feel very much alike. In 1778, the Swedish chemist Scheele published a treatise in which he pointed out essential differences between graphite and molybdenite. On treatment with nitric acid, molybdenite, unlike graphite, produced a peculiar white earth with acidic properties which he called molybdic acid. Since the same mineral gave off sulfurous fumes on heating, he concluded that it was a sulfide of molybdenum. In 1790, there appeared an account of the isolation by P. J. Hjelm of the new element molybdenum, as a metallic powder, by heating the oxide with carbon. It was not until Bertelius conducted the necessary experiments, about 1818 to 1825, that the foundation of the chemistry of molybdenum was laid. The only recorded use of molybdenum during the first century after its isolation was as a chemical reagent, primarily for the determination of phosphorus. It was not until the last decade of the nineteenth century that the use of molybdenum in steel appears to have been investigated. A

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.

It must be evident to almost everyone by now that a massive transformation is occurring in our iron ore economy. Its equal has been seen only once before in the entire history of the North American steel industry, and not even once before within the personal memory of anyone now engaged in it. The lone precedent was the beginning of ore shipments from the Mesabi Range in October, 1892, which was before anyone still short of normal retirement age had been born. No younger observer, in the steel industry or in any other, has ever known anything else than that the Lake Superior region-in which the Mesabi is the giant-has supplied all but a small fraction of total North American blast furnace ore for the use of three generations of steelmakers. Directly or indirectly, it was the discovery of the Mesabi which created most of the prime and satellite companies that have since come to prominence in the various ore-consuming phases, and it was the same discovery that had broader effects on the entire spectrum of their technologies than any other single event that has ever happened since, although the advent of byproduct coke is a close runnerup. It affected every sector of the national economy and was a keystone in making our standard of living what it is today.

The manufacture of steel castings has become one of the important industries of the times. The late Mr. Alexander I,. Holley published in 1878, in the Metallurgical Review, an able paper, entitled "Solid Steel Castings," showing how all manner of castings could be made advantageously of steel. Mr. Holley had then but lately returned from the great iron and steel works of Terrenoire, France, which were engaged, I believe, almost exclusively on large castings, of a simple type, for the government,, and were repeating the same operation from day to day. These conditions are, as experience has shown, very different from those of ordinary practice in miscellaneons castings; and Mr. Holley might have been less confident if be had actually gone into the business. More than seven years have passed ; and as yet the magnificent possibilities held forth in his paper have not been realized. There are only six steelcasting establishments in the United States, and their total output of castings is certainly not as much as 20,000 tons per annum, and probably not more than 10,000 tons; whereas it should be over 200,000 tons to supply the needs of the country. THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent, of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART I.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent., of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results.

The thermal diffusivity (thermal conductivity divided by specific heat) of Armco iron has been measured over the temperature range 30º to 1025ºC. The results are in good agreement with the thermal diffusivity computed from published values of thermal conductivity and specific heat, except near the Curie point and at the a to y phase transition, where the measured diffusivity undergoes rabid variations. The differences observed are ascribed to a rapid variation in the electronic thermal conductivity near the Curie point, and a decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity, at the a to ? phase transition. A major difficulty in measuring the thermal conductivity of materials at high temperatures is the determination and elimination of radiation losses. It has been shown, however, that in measuring thermal diffusivity D (thermal conductivity/specific heat) radiation losses can be taken into account exactly.' In order to test the performance of a newly designed apparatus for measuring thermal diffusivity of solids,' we measured Armco iron to an accuracy of 2 pct in the temperature range 30" to 1025°C. This material was selected since both the thermal conductivity,3'4 k, and specific heat,5 C, are known accurately in this temperature range and thus the measured values of D could be compared with D computed from the pub-

Plans to bring the Geco Mines property in Manitouwadge, Ont., into production began in 1954. At that time over 12 million tons of copper-zinc ore were indicated in a zone 2700 ft long. A concentrating plant was built to handle 3300 tpd of ore and a production shaft was sunk about 1500 ft. MINE LAYOUT Vertical attitude, width, rake, and competent country rock of a 4-million ton orebody west of the main diabase dike suggested a system of blasthole stopes, undercut with scram drifts connected by a transfer raise system to a crusher on the 1250-ft level and this system was employed. A 42-in. conveyor on this level transfers the ore about 1200 ft to a loading pocket at the No. 1 shaft. The system has a number of advantages: 1) Cost of tramming is eliminated. 2) Rate of extraction from any stope is controlled only by the scraping capacity of the scram. 3) Rate of extraction from the stoping area can be very rapid. Fast extraction makes it possible to cut mining costs for the following reasons: The number of stopes actively producing is kept to an economical minimum; the operating area is concentrated-manpower can be used more effectively; and active life of the stoping block is short, making ground support problems simpler and less costly.

THE writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term "diastrophic" has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools.

INTRODUCTION The Tsumeb Mine is situated in the northern part of South West Africa, approximately 335 air miles north-east of the port of Walvis Bay on the Atlantic Coast, and 240 air miles north of Windhoek, the capital of South west Africa. The mine came into operation in the early 1900's and has operated continuously since then except during the two world warm and the depression years of the thirties, Tsumeb Corporation purchased the property in 1947, installed a new plat, and ham built a modern tom. In addition to the concentrator which began operations in 1948, a copper smelter was started in 1962 and a lead smelter in 1963, Tonnage of ore treated in the concentrator has varied through the years, reaching a maximum of 70,000 tons per month with a current mined tonnage of approximately 50,000 tons per month. Copper concentrates, lead concentrates and zinc concentrates are produced, and for a number of years the production of a germanium enriched concentrate was an important feature of the operation, Both copper and lead concentrates are smelted in Tsumeb, while the zinc concentrates are shipped overseas. Ore change, and the installation of the smelters in Tsumeb have necessitated modifications in the concentrator operation.
