The history of iron construction in this country well illustrates the three phases of thought described by Auguste Comte, the French philosopher. The first is the era of faith, when belief in the safety of structures rests on the authority of the designer. The second is the era of criticism, when plans of structures are analyzed with much mathematical skill, but the data upon which the chain of reasoning depends is assumed upon insufficient experiment. The third, upon which we are now entering, is a scientific era, which demands experimental proof. It also demands that this proof shall be derived from experiments made on full-sized specimens, such as are in actual use, and not upon toy models. Until the construction of the United States testing-machine, now at Watertown Arsenal, it was impossible to make such experiments with accuracy. We now have a machine in which we can test full-sized specimens of every part of a bridge or other structure that we want to use, and under the same conditions in which it is actually used. The next thing is to get money to make these experiments available. No private individuals can afford to do it, and even if they could, they might wish to keep the results to themselves. So that the next point is that we want money, and that, I believe, everybodly thinks we should ask Congress for. We want also, as has been said, some one who shall make a business of testing, and who has plenty of time. Persons who are employed in private business are too much in a hurry; they want to do a thing and get done with it, and then do something else; but government officers are entirely free from this feeling; time to them is of no account, and in experimenting that is the very element that is of value; it does not do to be hurried; the great thing is to get it right and to test your results, and go over it, again and again. And the experimenter who operates the machine must be some person educated up to the use of it. We then want a general advisory board who will indicate a plan of experiments, collect the results; and publish them. 1 apologize for attempting to talk in a field in which 1 am by no means a specialist, but some of the problems brought up have much in common with other minerals. It touches the field in which we are all interested and it is a field in which our Mineral Inquiry has been giving special attention during the last two years. While it is the primary business, of course, of this Institute to consider the physical facts and technology of minerals, we now face the necessity of considering the minerd industry in its broader economic, social, and political relationships. We have run into a traffic jam—as though a load of hay had been spilled on the road. It makes no difference whether we are drivers or passengers, technical or nontechnical men, we have to get the load off the road before we can go farther. We are conscious of very many difficulties which are outside of the ordinary range of cost accounting or methods of mining or the usual thing with which we concern ourselves. We have extensive readjustments to make in our social and economic and political contacts. It is up to us to find out what is the matter. As a matter of fact, we do not know what is the matter in any comprehensive way. We have many suggestions as to difficulties here and there. Many people are working on the problem, but when the mineral industry as a whole is asked what is a reasonable course of procedure, what is its program, what would be a reasonable state or national policy, I think you will agree with me that we have no spokesman able to outline even a semblance of such a general policy. We sit back and criticize when somebody else steps in, as Governor Murray stepped in, and as many others of our state governors and legislators are stepping in, to do things which we do not think are reasonable. When they say, "What is a reasonable program? " we find ourselves caught napping. We have not agreed on a program. AT the present time, there appear to be two conflicting opinions on the solubility of boron in titanium. P. Ehrlich' has indicated from X-ray diffraction work that boron is soluble in titanium up to TiB0.8 (17.8 wt pct, 44 atomic pct). The X-ray diffraction pattern for titanium was found in compositions up to TiB0.05_0.07 (1.1 to 1.6 wt pct); then, without a phase gap, superlattice lines appeared up to TiB0.8 On the other hand, Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood' have estimated the solubility of boron in both alpha and beta titanium to be less than 0.1 wt pct, based on results of metallographic analysis. In some recent work done at Battelle, results were obtained which shed more light on the titanium-rich end of the titanium-boron system. Iodide-type titanium and high-purity crystalline boron were used in this investigation. The boron was prepared by hydrogen reduction of boron tri-bromide and deposition on a hot tungsten wire. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in an argon atmosphere of 10 cm Hg pressure on a water-cooled copper hearth. The ingots were hot rolled to strip at 850°C. Alloys containing up to 1 pct B could be hot rolled. Those containing 2 pct or more B could not be hot rolled. Metallographically, it was found that a second phase was present in alloys containing as little as 0.4 pct B, and that the quantity of second phase increased with increasing boron content. This is illustrated in Figs. la and lb, which show the microstructures of a Ti-0.4B and a Ti-1B alloy annealed in argon at 850°C. X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 1 and 5 pct B revealed the presence of extra lines which correspond to the superlattice lines reported by Ehrlich.' However, no evidence was found of a shift in the lattice constants of alpha titanium indicating that there is very little, if any, solubility of boron in alpha titanium. This fact, coupled with the fact that the alloys were definitely two-phase, indicates that the extra lines are not superlattice lines, but are more probably the result of a second phase of a hexagonal structure almost identical in cell

Natural petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the "pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the controlled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is produced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grow rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures wereincreasing. Determination of Gas-oil Contact and Thickness of Gas Cap The gas-oil contact can be conveniently located in the process of drilling a well and by electrical logging. However, very little can be found in the petroleum literature concerning methods of predetermining gas-oil contacts in producing reservoirs. Therefore, the writer feels justified in describing briefly a simple, workable, and inexpensive method of determining gas-oil contacts and outlining the limits of gas-cap areas in a field where such knowledge may be essential for efficient production and development operations. The method involves the determination of the following data: (I) Structural data, such as the depth or elevation of the top' of "pay" horizon; (2) reservoir pressures; (3) tubing and casing pressures at the well head; (4) static oil-pressure gradient; (5) static gas-pressure gradient. These data can be secured with a minimum of expense, inasmuch as the

IN. THE autumn of 1922, British Petroleums Ltd. found oil of 14° Baumé in a sand 17 ft. thick in its. No. 2 well at Wainwright, 120 miles southeast of Edmonton. This greatly encouraged drilling in the Wainwright-Irma area and this past summer several wells were started, three of which are now completed and the others still being drilled. Of the three completed, No. 4 British Petroleums contains oil; No. 3 British Petroleums gave a show of oil but so far has not given much hope, of becoming a commercial producer; and No. 1 Maple Leaf Co., as now finished, is a. gas well with a daily flow of gas of about 2,500,000 cu. ft. at a closed pressure of 700 lb. An oil sand is reported to have been encountered below the producing gas horizon in the Maple Leaf well but has not been tested. Operations on this well have been suspended for the winter. The Geological Survey of Canada this past summer undertook a geological investigation of this area with the object of defining the structures with which the oil and gas are associated. The structure underlying this portion of the plains was supposed to be a terrace with the western edge dipping into the Alberta syncline and with a monoclinal structure to the east. By accurate leveling on known geological horizons on this terrace, a number of gentle folds were located and -it is in these folds that the oil and gas are found. At the British Petroleums Nos. 2 and 4 oil wells, the western flank of the fold has a gentle dip of only a few feet to the mile to the southwest whereas the strata on the eastern flank dip to the northeast about 40 ft. in ½ mile, the strike of the fold being northwest and southeast. How far oil will be found down the gentle southwest dip is unknown but probably the productive part of the fold will not exceed 1 mile in width, and possibly less. No. 3 British Petroleums well is on the strike of the fold 1 mile southeast of the two oil wells. The sand that was productive in Nos. 2 and 4 wells was not present in this well or, if present, was very thin and unproductive. Two other sand horizons, however, were encountered. The upper of these

Having occasion several years since to make ferrous sulphide, I attempted to do so by fusing a mixture of coal-brasses (FeS2) and dried ferrous sulphate. A very nice-looking sulphide was obtained; but on attempting to use it, I found that it was insoluble in dilute hydrochloric and sulphuric acids. The subject was laid aside at the time, but has since been taken up; and some curious results have been obtained, which I believe are new. I have made the material by all of the following methods and the product seems to be pretty much the same, however obtained : (a) FeS2 heated to fusion. (b) FeS2, and FeSO4 heated to fusion. (c) FeS2, and Fe2O3 heated to fusion. (d) FeS2, and FeCO3, heated to fusion. (e) FeSO4, and S heated to fusion. (f) Fe2O3 and S heated to fusion. Obtained in this way the mass after cooling breaks easily and is very nearly black in color. On the upper surface of the fused cake the color is generally reddish or brownish black. When this is treated with dilute sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, it refuses to dissolve; but if touched with the point of a file or any piece of wrought-iron, solution of the sulphide takes place with the evolution of sulphuretted hydrogen. If the iron is removed the evolution of gas ceases, and only begins again when the iron is again brought into contact with the fused sulphide. The same thing happens if the iron is connected with the sulphide by means of a platinum wire. But in all the samples of fused sulphide I have obtained, if the iron is allowed to remain in contact with the sulphide for a certain time (which varies with different samples of the fused sulphide) and is then removed, solution of the sulphide continues. Zinc, tin, and magnesium have the same effect as iron. In hydrochloric acid aluminium acts more rapidly even than iron. In sulphuric acid it has little if any effect. Copper in HCl, when brought in contact with the fused sulphide, dissolves quietly without evolution of gas. The solution of copper chloride formed becomes,as it flows down over the sulphide, converted into copper sulphide.

ElectRical prospecting by potential methods has been applied to mining problems for some years and determinations of the depth to bed rock have been made, but so far as is known it has not been used previously in the solution of civil engineering problems, such as investigating the foundations of dams. During the past winter and spring the senior author has been engaged as consulting geologist in studying the site of a large dam on the upper Connecticut River and has had the satisfaction of introducing electrical prospecting to foundation problems. The valley across which the dam is to be built is underlaid by a deeply buried preglacial gorge which is filled with glacial deposits. An extensive drilling campaign was in progress, but the work was unusually slow and expensive on account of the number of boulders in the overburden. The necessity of speeding up the work was pressing and it was decided that much of the needed information could be obtained by geophysical methods. After investigating the various methods and conferring with the company engineers and with the consulting engineer, Albert Crane, a contract was made with the Schlumberger Electrical Prospecting Methods, and an observer with apparatus was sent to the dam site the first of April, 1928. The problem was to determine the depth to rock at various points in order to prepare a contour map of the bed-rock surface and outline the buried gorge in the vicinity of the dam site. Over one hundred determinations of depth have been made and the bed-rock topography is now known in considerable detail. In addition, some information has been obtained about the nature of the overburden. The drilling has been continued; in fact, two additional drills have been put to work, and the electrical determinations have been checked at several points. At one of these the depth to rock given by the electrical work was 142 ft. and the drill found rock at 147 ft., an error of less than 4 per cent. The electrical work has also been checked by the geological study, and it has been found that when the electrical determinations are in agreement with the geological expectations they are probably reasonably accurate. Iodine is a soft, lustrous, grayish-black non- metallic element with a density of 4.9. It is the least active of the four members of the halogen family. The other members are, in order of increasing activity, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Iodine is a solid at ordinary temperatures, while bromine is a liquid and chlorine and fluorine are gases. Iodine melts at 113°C and volatilizes at 184.4°C to a blue- violet gas with an irritating odor. It occurs in nature only as iodates and iodides or other combined forms. It was discovered by Bernard Courtois in France in 1811, who noticed its presence as an unknown substance in crude soda ash obtained from burning seaweed. Gay-Lussac recognized it as a new element and named it iode, from the Greek word "ioeides or iodes" for violet color (MacMillan, 1970). The world production is not known with any great certainty, but it is probably between 20 and 25 million lb per year, of which about 25% is consumed in the United States. Geology and Mineralogy Iodine compounds occur as a minor constituent as a mineral in the Chilean nitrate deposits and in solution in brines and sea- water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. The minerals lautarite, Ca (10,) (calcium iodate), and dietzeite, Ca, (10,) , (CrO,) , (calcium iodate-chromate) are found in Chilean nitrate deposits which are located in Antofagasta and Tarapach provinces on the eastern slope of the coast range in a desert area. Various brines contain iodine compounds. Seawater contains about 0.05 ppm of iodine and some seaweeds will extract and accumulate it up to 0.45% on a dry basis. Some coals in West Germany also contain iodine compounds. The known and potential sources of iodine reported in 1968 are given in [Table 1]. Iodine has been recovered from brines in Java, Indonesia, France, England, and the USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. The indicated re- serves and future resources of iodine are large but have never been adequately measured. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable.

In presenting this paper it is not intended to enter into any discussion of the theory of the blast-furnace, but simply to give the results of a number of determinations of CO and CO 2 in furnace gases, and some conclusions arrived at, and the result of an experiment made in hopes of increasing the production of CO 2. In the first table, on page 198, is given the averages of a number of analyses of gases of different furnaces, and in the second, of two stacks of different sizes under varying circumstances. The conclusions arrived at as to what influences the production of CO2 are as follows: lst,. Kind of fuel. Bituminous coal not permitting the formation of as much CO, as coke. 2d. Kind of ores. Rolling-mill cinder being much less favorable to formation of CO2 than hematite ores, magnetites probably less than hematites, but more than cinder. 3d. Length of time of contact of gases with ore. Small furnaces and too rapid driving both waste fuel by riot allowing enough time for conversion of CO into CO2. 4th. The temperature of blast. The hotter the greater the quantity of CO2. 5th. Regularity of passage of stock through the furnace. The hanging and dropping of the stock, however slight, seems to pack it more solidly in the hearth, increases the resistance to the blast, and decreases the quantity of CO2. These are the most common causes noticed which influence the production of CO2, unless we except the one that might be considered the greatest of all, the one that has spoiled so many tons of iron, and the amiability of so many furnacemen, the one most dreaded, the great unknown. It would seem a self-evident proposition that the better the contact of the gases with the ore and the less with the fuel, the greater would be the amount of CO2 produced. To prolong the contact of gas with the ore furnaces are enlarged with advantage, and pains are taken to charge the stock in such a manner as will best promote it. Still, with furnaces of most approved construction and most skilful manipulation, the gases leave the furnace so rich in CO, that not half the heating power of the fuel is obtained, and the highest

TWO-LIQUID miscibility gaps have been found to exist in both the CaO-SiO, system above 1705 and the Cr,03 system above 2200"c. Glasser and 0sborn3 studied the extension of these miscibility gaps into the Ca0-Si0,-Crz03 ternary system and reported that the two-liquid region is not present at temperatures below the monotectic temperature of 1705°C in the CaO-SiO, system. The present authors, in connection with other work on surface-tension measurements and foam stabilities in the same ternary system,4 observed that the miscibility gap exists at temperatures as low as 1600°C. A brief experimental study was devoted to deter- mining tie-line positions in the two-phase region. The technique used was to obtain a separation of phases at 1600°C, then to quench-in the high-temperature phases and obtain a chemical analysis of each phase. It was necessary to take special precautions in obtaining a phase separation because of a tendency toward emulsification of the two liquids. The procedure followed is described in the schematic drawing in Fig. 1. A small platinum crucible containing several pinholes on its sides was placed inside a larger platinum crucible. An excess of Crz03 was placed in the outer crucible, together with a prefused binary CaO-Si02 mixture, and the Cr203 was allowed to diffuse through the pinholes and saturate the same binary CaO-SiOl mixture in the smaller crucible. After equilibration at 1600°C, the inner crucible contained only the lighter liquid (liquid A) saturated with Cr203. The outer crucible contained layers of both liquids. Experimental data were obtained by analyzing the entire contents of the inner crucible and only the bottom layer of the larger crucible (liquid B). The upper layer of the outer crucible was not suitable for chemical-analysis purposes because dispersions of the second phase sometimes were found in the samples. The technique is described in more detail in Ref. 4. The same method was used by Grieveson and urkdoan' to study a miscibility gap in sulfate-ferrite melts, where the liquids were difficult to separate because of similarities in density. The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. ANSON CT. BETTS, Asheville, N. C.-1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds-from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not, come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. F. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls his not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall.

The Spies mine is located in the eastern half of the northwest quarter of section 2443-35, near the village of Iron River, Mich., and is operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Speaking generally, the jasper hanging walls of most of the deposits in the Iron River district dip at a steep angle and are exceedingly strong, standing without caving, even after mining has been continued for years and after large excavations have been made. The ore is fairly hard and tough and contains no slippage faces. It occurs in large masses, which are often egg shape, with the smaller end down, and can be mined in open stopes without the use of timber. The common system employed in the district is the shrinkage stope, or some modification of it. The Spies system was developed to utilize the advantages of the open-stope method and to avoid the disadvantages of the shrinkage stope. The Spies shaft was sunk to such a depth that the bottom, or third level, was in rock at a short distance below the bottom of the orebody, the shape and extent of which had been previously determined by diamond drilling. This is shown in plan and by the ore contours at the first, second, and third levels in Fig. 1, and in section in Figs. 2 to 7. In order to provide the necessary mills and raises, three parallel crosscuts were driven on 25 ft. centers on the bottom level. Drifts on the second and first levels were driven to the orebody and followed the foot wall in a southerly direction to the end of the ore. In crosscut 3, Fig. 1, raises 30, 40, 50, and 60 were carried up on the foot wall and holed into the second level, and were ultimately carried up and holed into the first level. These foot-wall raises carry the pipes and ladders, provide a means of ventilation, and furnish safe communication to all working places in the stope. From crosscuts 1, 2, and 3, raises were completed to a height of 32 ft., or the elevation of the first sublevel. They were then connected by east and west crosscuts to the main foot-wall raises 30, 40, 50, and 60, shown in Fig. 4. The crosscuts in raises 1 to 5 were then driven west and the

The development of production in West Texas during the year 1933 was largely confined to the expansion of proven areas, especially Ward County, Iatan and North Winkler. Wildcat activity was at a comparatively low ebb and resulted only in discoveries of probable minor importance in Ector County. The interest shown in deep wildcatting to test beds of pre-Permian age was a new development, which should soon throw light on the possibilities of deeper production from the present producing fields. The important pre-Permian tests of the year were: 1. Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., Todd No. 1, a unitized test, in north central Crockett County on a probable continuation of the Big Lake trend. The well encountered several showings of oil and penetrated an Ordovician section very similar to the productive zones at Big Lake, but was abandoned when sulfur water was encountered at 8041 feet. 2. Gulf Production Co., McElroy No. 103, in the McElroy Field, Upton County. The well was drilling at 8553 ft. at the close of the year in beds of probable pre-Permian age. The test is an important one because it should prove or disprove deep production in the Church-Fields-McElroy pools and also throw geologic light on the deep possibilities of other fields in the western part of the Permian Basin. 3. Humble Oil and Refining Co., White and Baker No. 1, in Pecos County, about 11 miles west of the Yates field. The well is on a nonproductive Permian high and should indicate the deep possibilities of the Yates field. At the end of the year, drilling had progressed to 7200 ft., where beds of pre-Permian age are believed to have been penetrated. The major fields in West Texas, in which present-day proration had its inception, were produced under increased restrictions. A date of importance in the proration history of the area was $ept. 8, 1933, when the Railroad Commission issued an order placing all producing wells under proration. The severe reductions in total outlet made during 1933 were well compensated for by a more than threefold increase in the price of crude oil. Acid treatment was one of the general engineering developments of interest. The work had not progressed sufficie~ltly at the close of 1933

During the past year considerable progress was made in the exploitation of Iraq's resources, although no new fields were discovered. The principal development was the completion of the much heralded pipe line from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean, by the Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd., and the beginning of crude exports to Europe on the second of August. Official ceremonies for the opening of the lines took place in January, 1935. The line in itself is sufficient achievement under the existing natural handicaps to deserve a moment's attention. It is 1151 miles long, composed of two independent lines made up mostly of 12-in. with some 10-in. and 8-in. pipe, and extends from Kirkuk westward 156 miles to beyond the Euphrates River as a double line. From that point, near the village of Haditha inside the Iraq border, it bifurcates, one leg going as a single line to Haifa through the British Mandated Territories of Trans-Jordania and Palestine, and the other to Tripoli through the French Mandates of Syria and the Leban(on)ese Republics. The total length of the Tripoli line is 532 miles, of the Haifa line 619 miles. The line leaves Kirkuk at an elevation of 1013 ft., drops to 350 ft. at the Tigris, to 200 ft. at Wadi Tharthar west of the Tigris and again to 300 ft. at the Euphrates, rises to more than 3150 ft. at mile 451 on the central Arabian steppe along the south line and to more than 2500 ft. at mile 466 along the north line. On crossing the rift valley of the Jordan River south of Galilee, it drops abruptly below 850 ft. below sea level, requiring the use of extra heavy 8-in. pipe and a relief station to reduce the pressure. A picked group of American welders, under H. S. Austin, of the Ajax Pipe Line Co., laid the line. It is coated, wrapped, and buried 30 in. beneath the surface in solid rock along much of the route. It crosses four large rivers and wide stretches of alkaline soils. Twelve pumping stations are employed, three of which are double east of the bifurcation. Each single station houses three 500-hp. crude-burning deisel engines flexible-coupled to reciproratirig pumps. Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field's review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

C.-Do you know anything about the character of that clay as to organic matter? H. RIES, Ithaca, N. Y.-No; it is a dark brownish clay, sandy in its nature. The brownish coloring is probably due to organic matter. Some lignite is also present. DONALD W. Ross.*-I have worked at the plant under consideration. I have not seen Mr. Farnham's paper; but in answering the question as to the organic matter, I might say there is practically no organic material scattered through the shale. There are, however, several layers of carbonaceous shale and rather low-grade coal interbedded with the formation. There are two very serious drawbacks-one which threatens to shut down the plant and another which merely means the expenditure of money. The first is taking care of the sediment from the washing away of the overburden. The government is doing extensive work at different points about Lake Washington with a view to creating a fresh-water harbor for Seattle. I understand that they keep at the Denny-Renton people to keep the channel of Cedar River clear. The Denny-Renton Co. can hardly help filling up the channel so long as they continue their hydraulic work, so this is probably one of their most serious problems. The other is this: There is a large percentage of what I should call micaceous shale or sandstone-a sandstone which contains a large amount of light-colored mica. Of course only a limited amount of this can be used in the manufacture of paving brick. As they shoot down the bank after the overburden of gravel and loam is washed away, these large boulders of micaceous sandstone come down. The strata have apparently been crushed where the clay pit is located so that the exact formation cannot be readily determined. These pieces of sandstone, 5 or 6 ft. in diameter, have to be blasted and removed from the shale. They bother both in the open pit and in the tunnel mining. In the tunnel mining of the shale blocks frequently cover the holes in the roof of the tunnel through which the shale is loaded into cars.

THE etch-pit technique has long been used to reveal low-angle boundaries and, in general, the distribution of dislocations in high-purity metals. Often this technique is amenable to quantitative computations,' but generally is affected by some degree of uncertainty because etch pits can be nucleated not only by dislocations, but also by inclusions and surface imperfections. In the case of high-purity zinc, Gilman' reported that etch pits were produced only after adding 0.1 atomic per cent of cadmium to the crystals and aging at a proper temperature. In the course of a study of low-angle boundary behavior in zinc crystals, etch pits were produced in 99.999 pct zinc without resorting to intentional contamination, by etching in a 50:50 HNO3H2O solution. The technique consists of etching until the heat of reaction brings the solution to a boil, and in displacing the etchant rapidly with a stream of cold water, thus avoiding staining. The undesirable features of this technique are the heating effect and the removal of a considerable amount of material. A high polish is obtained if staining is controlled properly; therefore, the etch pits appear very clearly and with excellent contrast when observed under dark field illumination. This is especially helpful for cursory examinations at low magnifications. Several observations were made on zinc crystals of square cross section, having one face parallel to the basal plane and one edge parallel to a slip direction, Fig. l(a). When such a crystal was bent about 2" over a glass die and annealed at 390°C, a sharp boundary was formed only in the inner portion of the crystal. Near the two prismatic faces, perpendicular to the basal plane, the boundary was always branched into many lower-angle boundaries, Fig. 1(b). Attempts to move the main boundary by applying a shear stress to the specimen invariably resulted in curving the boundary, the branched ends remaining pinned in their original location, Fig. 1 (c). The prismatic face, when etched as indicated in the foregoing, revealed the existence of numerous (sometimes up to 30) fine boundaries, nearly parallel to each other. Pre-existing lineage boundaries, generally parallel to the direction of growth, were barriers to the formation of polygonization boundaries and interrupted the continuity of the substructure, Fig. 2. THERE have always been in this world men of such keen intelligence that with their discourse they have been capable of infinite and various inventions that are as beneficial as they are simultaneously harmful to the human body. Wherefore, from day to day, we see unfolded before our eyes some of these that greatly astound our minds, and we remain so stupefied that when-we think of them we are not able to control our faculties for some time, both from considering by what necessity or purpose these men were goaded, as well as from contemplating the profound subtlety of their discoveries, which, in truth, are such that they are awarded the greatest commendation by noble minds. By following their counsels and with their aid, there have been* some astute and lever captains who have had certain pots or balls of earthenware carried by their infantry, expressly filled with compositions of powder or other unctuous liquors disposed to ignite easily. When they meet the enemy in battle and come up close to them, they try to strike vigorously with these in the first assault in an effort to throw them into disorder and to make them give way by breaking them up and drawing them out of formation. The smoke is harmful, but the fire very much more so. These are made in this way. Take the number of vessels that you have to make-it does not matter whether they are raw or baked as long as they are well freed from the moisture of the clay-and fill them a little more than half full with coarse gunpowder which has mixed in it pounded Grecian pitch and at least a third of crushed sulphur. Then pour in a covering a dito thick of strained pig fat mixed with powder. This keeps it from falling out when it is thrown and keeps the fire slower until it reaches the enemy. When this has been made, open up the pig fat a little at one side when you wish to throw it and put in a little fuse or a little good powder and apply fire, holding it in your hand until you see that the fire has taken hold well.
