MAGNETITE mining and milling in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania continued to remain comparatively inactive during 1933, owing to the low rate of output of the steel industry and also to unrestricted importation of foreign ores. However, some improvement over conditions existing in 1932 was noticeable, particularly in New Jersey, where one plant, that of the Washington mine of the Alan Wood Mining Co., at Oxford, went on full production in August. At Lyon Mountain, N. Y., the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co. resumed mining and milling operations in October, on a reduced scale, principally to provide employment during the winter months. The Chateaugay company produces a special low-phosphorus pig iron. During the year they obtained a contract to supply their product for use in the manufacture of the suspension cables of the New. Golden Gate Bridge.

CONDITIONS at the properties of the Consolidated Coal Co. had reached a point where improvements were almost impractical. The mines, sunk years ago, had shafts and entries so small as to preclude the use of large mine cars. A radical change was necessary in the type of mining and also in the type of mine to accommodate such haulage units. After due consideration, the company decided to enter the field of trackless mining, utilizing belt conveyors and chain-flight conveyors, the belt conveyors to take the long haul, and the chain-flight conveyors to be used for gathering. It was decided not to sink a shaft, but to drive a slope on an inclination of 17 1/2°, which the company believes to be about the limit on which coal can be carried on a belt without rolling back unduly.

Replacement of active groups in corn starch, as shown by results of the starch derivatives tested, impairs rather than improves the value of corn starch as a selective iron oxide depressant. Increased ability to depress iron oxides is generally accompanied by a parallel ability to depress quartz. PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.' From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch-chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. Financing the acquisition of a going coal mine operation has not had the exposure other finance-oriented projects have had. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

The importance of having methods for the rapid and accurate determination of manganese in modern steel manufacture cannot be overestimated. The method adopted in the laboratory of the Midvale Steel Works is very satisfactory, and I think it will be of interest to some of the members to give a description of it. Before giving the more detailed account of the manipulations, a review of some well-known methods and chemical facts may not be out of place. The " bromine and ammonia" process, as fully described in the tenth volume of the Transactions of this Institute, was certainly an improvement on the methods in which fixed alkaline salts were used, as these gave invariably too high resnlts, as generally carried out. But the separation of all the iron before the manganese was, in both methods, a source of great inconvenience and delay.

Utah Power & Light Company is an electric utility serving approximately 1.8 million people in Utah, Idaho, and waning. In order to supply coal to fuel power plants, Utah Power & Light awns three mines in central Utah. Planning for these mines is aided by a computer program developed by the staff mining engineers. This program, when supplied with the pertinent seam and mining configuration data, calculates the time to mine each section. This allows the planning engineer to estimate accurately the time required to extract pillar sections or develop longwall panels. The program's greatest benefit, however, is its ability to allow the engineer to examine quickly, different combinations of possible mine layouts to determine the most efficient plan. Computer aided mine planning has been used at Utah Power & Light Company since 1979, and has significantly improved the accuracy and quality of mine planning.

THE data on the critical resolved shear stress for zinc single crystals published by Rosbaud and Schmid1 showed many irregularities, as seen in fig. 1. The Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory at North Carolina State University is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. The laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar. spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and it maintains a versatile batch and pilot plant. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the laboratory's projects. Current laboratory work is sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This work is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to these tails to reclaim salable mineral products such as feldspar, mica, quartz, and to make a more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications.

INTRODUCTION United Nuclear Corporation and Homestake Mining Company are partners in a major uranium mining and milling venture near Grants, New Mexico. The partnership was formerly called Homestake-Sapin Partners and was recently renamed United Nuclear-Homestake Partners (UN-HP). The mill, originally built in 1958, had a capacity of 1,650 tons per day. With subsequent improvements and the addition of the adjacent Homestake - New Mexico Partners mill, the UN-HP mill is currently rated at about 3,500 tons per day. A RETROSPECT of the growth of the production of pig-iron for the past half century would be the history of the invention and introduction of heated blast as applied to the smelting of iron ores. As the apparatus employed was improved in conception and construction, the economical operation of the furnaces to which it was attached was the more marked, and the production correspondingly increased. To compare the original iron box placed over a coal fire with the modern hot-blast stove, with its combustion-chamber, gas-burners, and air-regulators, would be as unfavorable to the former as to contrast the product of the little Blauöfen with the yield of the improved furnaces of to-day. But, as these little Blauöfen were the germs from which the larger plants have grown, so from the crude apparatus invented and applied by Neilson has grown, in the face of great opposition, the more economical hot-blast stoves now in use. It is not surprising that an innovation like heated blast should have received a large amount of attention from metallurgists, nor that men of recognized ability should formerly have been found both among its champions and opponents, but it is remarkable that, at the present day, with the results of careful research and thorough experiment compiled in convenient shape for perusal, there are iron¬masters who still consider it economy to allow the products of combustion to escape into the atmosphere, rather than utilize them in heating the blast, because of a supposed injury to the quality of the product. In the present state of knowledge and practice, it is proper to express as an axiom, that a well-constructed hot-blast apparatus is essential to the economic operation of an iron-producing plant. Of the interpretation of proper construction there is of necessity a variety of opinions, and, with the view of solving the problem, the apparatus for heating blast has from time to time assumed various forms. Boxes, cylinders, and pipes, placed horizontally, vertically, inclined, or in circles and spirals, have been tried ; there have been pistol-shaped pipes, double pipes, divided or diaphragm pipes, siphon pipes, and as much variety in the mains, connections, flues, and setting. A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. FOLLOWING the presentation of the papers by Messrs. Mahan and Butler, the discussion printed below ensued. A. C. LANE* With particular reference to the New England con-sumer, I entirely agree with Mr. Mahan that intelli-gent marketing methods will do a good deal, but there is more than one way of improving them. For instance, coal can be shipped best to New England about this time of year-after the storms of the winter and before the movement of crops in the summer. For that reason there ought to be seasonal freight rates. This will be agreed to by most coal men if you will ask them, especially those who are connected with large concerns like the Metropolitan Coal Co., and yet they do not get seasonal freight rates partly because the railroads are afraid if they once reduce them they will never have a chance to get them back again. But it would be an improvement to have seasonal freight rates. Another thing: When we are buying in New England we want really a certain amount of heat value in our coal. There is no great advantage in our buying ash, nor is there any particular advantage in the railroad shipping ash and clogging the circulatory system of the body politic any more than clogging the circulatory system of the physical body. It would be desirable if the wholesaler, and to some extent the retailer, could guarantee the amount of ash or sell their coal on heating value. If you are interested in that you will find some interesting charts, in "Anthracite Coal Costs Analyzed," a pamphlet issued by the Anthracite Coal Consumers Association, Inc., New York City, as to rates from various and sundry points for bituminous and anthra-cite coal from the field to New York, Buffalo and Chi-cago. Here in New England they are both up against the competition of oil. About 3 or 3 1/2 bbl. oil will do the work of a ton of coal. One of my millionaire friends who is well posted on the situation is putting oil in his Commonwealth Avenue house because it is the most economical. Moreover, we can get Welsh coal from across the water (and help equalize this matter of exchange with Europe) in close competition with Penn-sylvania coal.

INTRODUCTION DURING the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.1 Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period 0f approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. Vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. Mercury-filled risers were used for the introduction of samples in order that the system could be degassed thoroughly in

For the US coal industry, 1978 was a nightmarish recurrence of 1977 as the United Mine Workers strike cut into production during the first three months of 1978, followed by the strike against the Norfolk and Western Railway during the summer and early autumn. Coking coal production was floored by the one-two punch of environmental constraints on US coke ovens and competition from low-cost, high-quality imports. At the same time, US ex orts of coal fell to their lowest level since 1962. And in the face of all of this, steam coal consumption was sluggish as utilities burned huge amounts of oil to conserve coal stockpiles during the UMW strike. This was followed by decreased electrical demands due to mild summer weather in many parts of the country and dramatically improved availability of hydroelectric power.

NOT WITHSTANDING the extremely low ebb of business activity, the nonmetallic industries have fared somewhat better than some other branches of mining. The average price level in nonmetallics, although far from satisfactory, has resisted any cataclysmic fall such as has been suffered by copper and other metals. Stocks, also, though too abundant, represent no corresponding overhang of the market, which should result, in some branches, in a more rapid recovery. Research work has continued in some industries with interesting developments.
