I desire to call the attention of the Institute to an interesting experiment, which may turn out to be an indication of a valuable improvement in the manufacture of steel. As the members are aware, the addition of ordinary spiegeleisen, in the open hearth or Bessemer converter, to a bath of decarbonized iron, has a twofold object,—the recarbonization of the bath to a desired degree, and the remedy of the red shortness otherwise found to be inevitable in the final product. This red shortness is ascribed to the presence of oxide of iron in the molten metal; and it is supposed that the manganese of the spiegeleisen, uniting with the oxygen of such oxide, carries it into the slag. At the same time there is a small percentage of the manganese usually left in the cast steel, probably to the improvement of its quality. Whatever be the true explanation the effect of the manganese is acknowledged to be not only beneficial, but necessary. But the use of spiegeleisen containing high percentages of carbon limits the quantity that can be introduced, because the carbon must be limited if soft steel is desired. This inconvenience becomes so serious as to prevent the use of ordinary spiegeleisen in the manufacture of steel containing more than, say two-tenths per cent. of phosphorus; since the quality of the steel can be made tolerable only by reducing its contents of carbon in proportion as the

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY With respect to the geomechanics aspects, the primary technical objectives in mining by an undercut-cave method are to achieve a controlled, sustained caving of the mineral body and to remove the fragmented ore with a minimum of dilution from surrounding unmineralized rock, while maintaining stability or control of the rock structure around the access openings. The structurally ideal ore body probably does not exist. If the rock mass is so weak as to cave on a short span, it may tend to be too sticky for easy drawing and handling, or create special problems in regard to support of the access openings. If the ore is strong, caving may be difficult and the caved fragments may be of such a large size as to require special equipment for transferring the ore from the caved zone. Given enough time and money to generate data and conduct trials, engineering and ingenuity can devise an appropriate combination of mine layout, sequence of extraction, and mechanical equipment to achieve a technically successful caving extraction operation to meet the foregoing requirements in many types of deposits. The large capital investment involved, however, reduces the freedom to make major changes once the mine development is well under- way, and the penalties for failure to accurately anticipate operating conditions militate against selecting any but the most obvious candidates for mining by an undercut-cave method. The demonstrated capability to extract large, deep, economically marginal deposits by this low-cost, high-volume method of mining provides an incentive to develop a rationale for predicting the cavability and stability characteristics of a deposit prior to mining, so that the undercut-cave method may be extended to a much wider range of mineral deposit characteristics. The ultimate goal is to establish as explicitly as possible the quantitative interrelationships between the measured rock-mass characteristics, the caving span, the size distribution of caved ore fragments, and the sizes and locations of stable access openings. Lacking an understanding of these relation- ships, a designer may readily change some factor in the wrong direction (e.g., excessively reduce the distance between the extraction level and the undercut to increase the convenience of operations for the undercutting crew, increasing the frequency of repairs to the extraction-level support system) or create unnecessary problems elsewhere in the system by introducing a design change that can achieve only minimal improvement in the factor of direct interest (e.g., unnecessarily complicate the ore-transfer system by changing the orientations of the openings, with- out succeeding in the objective of improving the ground support conditions). Although successful predesign is the prime objective, subsequent modifications in mine lay- out and sequence of extraction operations are inevitable. In developing the modified solution, systematic experimentation based on an understanding of the underlying structural relationships, coupled with monitoring measurements of selected diagnostic structural-behavior parameters, can achieve an acceptable solution in a minimum number of steps, which is far superior to the typical operational trial-and-error approach, in view of the cost of implementing each successive change. Since a drill-core sample of ore rock from a successful undercut-cave operation may exhibit a uniaxial crushing strength in excess of 100 MPa, the caving of such a rock mass is now commonly believed to be ascribable to the presence of discontinuities such as joints or fractures throughout the ore body. An essential part of the present investigation was therefore to characterize the natural discontinuities at each of the test sites by measuring their attitudes and spacings. The term "fracture" is used herein in a general sense to include any planar discontinuity without implication as to its suggested mode of origin. Most, but not all, of the fractures are properly termed joints. As a point of departure we may consider the possibility that the rock mass is transected by three families of joints, each family possessing a distinct orientation, such that parallelepipeds of intact rock are delineated by the jointing. Even if cementation is absent between adjoining parallelepipeds, the undercutting of the rock mass will not necessarily initiate sustained caving--owing to the all-around confinement, an arch may tend to stabilize over the undercut unless prevented from doing so by the failures of key blocks of intact rock. THE subject assigned me, "Safety in Mining," is a very broad one and only the high spots can be covered in this short paper. As this is a meeting of the Coal Division, these remarks will be directed largely to coal mine safety, although the principles of safety and effective accident prevention methods are relatively the same in every branch of mining or industrial work. The coal mining industry should take pride in the part it has played in the development of the accident prevention movement, and there is ample proof for the statement that the first real organized accident prevention, work, both abroad and in this country, was con- ducted in the coal mining industry.

The structure of steel, when rendered coarse by over-heating, is made fine by re-heating to a certain temperature, the determination of which has received much attention from eminent metallurgical authorities. Among these, I may particularly mention Prof. D. Tschernoff' [Chernoff], who, about thirty years ago, studied this question in connection with his investigations on the structure of steel in genera1. † Some years later, Mr. J. A. Brinell took up the inquiry, and arrived at many important conclusions, stated in his well-known rules on the treatment of steel. ‡ These two gentlemen, however, based their reasoning chiefly upon the aspect of fractures—a method which, though it affords valuable information, does not readily reveal the different steps by which a change in structure takes place. For further light on the subject, we owe much to more recent microscopic investigations, which have made us better acquainted with the internal structure of metals. Such an investigation, closely connected with the present subject, and made by Mr. John E. Stead a few years ago, was first published in 1898.6

The Hadsel Mill. By R. G HALL (Trans, vol 112 4000 words) This mill is designed to effect the entire reduction of ores by combined crushing and grinding from mine run size to material sufficiently fine for the usual operation of flotation or cyaniding The work is begun and completed in the same machine. The machine is designed on the principal of the elevator wheel, and crushing and grinding are accomplished by dropping a mixture of ore and water upon specially placed "breaker plates" in such a manner that the resultant material passes back into the buckets of the wheel for further elevation One method of removal of the finished product is to permit an overflow of wet pulp on one side of the mill through coarse screens A recent improvement provides for the removal of a pulp by a launder part way up the path of the buckets In either case the pulp passes to a classifier, and the oversize back to the mill in the manner familiar in ball-mill practice Although hardly through the development stage, the machine has given a very good account of itself in simplification of plant, by elimination of coarse and fine crushers with consequent reduction of installation cost and power consumption As compared with the ball mill alone, there is a reduction of power consumption as well as a material reduction of grinding steel There is an increase in cost of maintenance other than grinding steel, but as the machine passes out of the development stage there is a show¬ing of reduction of costs on this item It seems probable that with further develop¬ment and strengthening of the weaker parts further improvement may be made Ball Milling. MOST of the copper mines in Canada are favored by nature in having other metals besides, copper in their ore, which puts them in a most satisfactory competitive position. Noranda ore has an important gold content, Flin Flon gold and zinc, and International Nickel of course has nickel. All of the larger copper companies in Canada operated during 1.933 and the total production of copper exceeded that of the year before. The Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. worked out to succcessful conclusion a three-product flotation process for separating the copper, zinc and iron from its low-grade ore. Representative samples of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minn., were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation at-tained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine-grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80% to 95%. The manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range in Minnesota constitute a major potential source of manganese in the United States provided that a technically and economically feasible process can be devised for its recovery. The iron and manganese of these ores occur chiefly as oxides or carbonates in the form of very small, irregular, discrete grains embedded in a matrix of quartz or other siliceous gangue. The present investigation was undertaken as a sequel to an earlier one conducted jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the R-N Corp. Those results indicated that the R-N Direct Reduction Process might be a means for recovering both a metallic iron concentrate and a marketable manganese by-product from Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores.' The R-N Process is one of many proposed schemes for the treatment of crude iron ores involving the di- rect reduction of the iron content to metallic iron followed by physical extraction of the iron. In general, it consists of the following stepsz2 1) Iron oxide in crushed natural ores or iron concentrates is about 95% reduced to metallic iron at elevated temperatures but without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of a solid carbonaceous fuel (usually coke), limestone, and combustible gases. 2) The kiln product, consisting of metallized ore, excess coke, lime, and coke ash is cooled. The excess coke is recovered and recycled to the kiln feed. 3) The metallized ore is ground for liberation and magnetically separated to yield a metallic iron concentrate. 4) The metallic iron concentrate is agglomerated by a briquetting process. The reduction kiln temperatures must be high enough for the desirable chemical reactions to proceed at practical rates without causing fusion of any of the ore constituents. The time of exposure of the ore to the reducing conditions must be ample for 90% to 95% metallization of the iron oxides present. If more than 95% of the iron is metallized, however, difficulties may arise in the briquetting step, presumably because of accompanying higher carbon content of the metallic iron. Although not always necessary, powdered limestone or dolomite may be added at some time during reduction to aid in eliminating sulfur and phosphorus from the final product.3,4 Other additives, notably sodium chloride, when present during reduction, result in improved liberation characteristics of the metallic iron from certain reduced ores.'v6 Under the reducing conditions normally employed, P(co + H2)= 1 atmosphere, and 1830' to 2150°F (1000° to 1170°C), the R-N Process is claimed to be adaptable to a wide variety of low, medium, and high grade iron and manganiferous iron ores. The manganese oxides and carbonates are reduced mostly to nonmagnetic MnO which is rejected to the nonmagnetic tailings. Manganese-bearing pyroxenes of the original ore, however, may be rejected poorly, if at all, apparently because these minerals occur within the iron lattice or are entrapped in the metal particles.7 The investigation was limited to studies of the Cuyuna ores listed in Table I, which were reduced to the metallic iron state under various conditions

THE sink-float methods designated by heavy-media separation processes were pioneered by C. Erb Weunsch for the treatment of base metal ores as an improvement over jigs. The work of Weunsch was further developed by Victor Rakowsky and The American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Early in the development of the processes, the inherent unsuitability of galena as the solid constituent of the medium was recognized and ferrous media amenable to magnetic recovery and control were developed. The high efficiency and low cost of magnetic recovery and cleaning of ferrous media regardless of particle size, slime contamination, or surfacial oxidation had led to the adoption of ferrous media by all of the sink-float plants operating under the heavy-media separation processes patents controlled by American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Approximately 2,000,000 tons of base metal and nonmetallic minerals are treated each month by these methods.

THE need for improved mine communication to increase efficiency and to insure greater safety has long been recognized. General and unrestricted communication between all points underground, and between the surface and all points underground, is probably the least advanced phase of the mining industry. An ideal system of mine communication must require no fixed wire installations. The equipment must be small, lightweight, and readily portable, and the power requirements low. A system that can be used not only under normal circumstances but also in an emergency, when the continuity of wires, tracks, and pipelines may be disrupted, must function independently of any aid furnished by standard installations. Radio communication offers possibilities of meeting all the requirements necessary for an ideal communication system in underground mines. Transmission of signals must be achieved through one or both of two mediums, through the air in mine openings or through the strata. The results or lack of results obtained by early investigators showed conclusively that radio communication by space transmission cannot be accomplished effectively beyond line-of-sight distances in underground passageways. A radio system underground therefore must depend solely upon transmission through soil and strata. The application of radio to underground mine communication was investigated by many individuals and agencies at different times in the last several decades, but little success was achieved before World war 11.2-0, The results of experiments during the war, and further knowledge gained in experiments with vastly improved communication methods and equipment after the war provided the background for additional research in radio communication in underground mines. During 1950 to 1.952 the University of Minnesota sponsored an investigation to determine the possibility of developing: a system of radio communication universally applicable in underground metal mines in the Lake Superior district. The possibility of using radio equipment to determine the imminence of rock bursts in deep copper mines in that district also was investigated. The investigation supplemented previous and concurrent emergency mine communication studies of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Testing equipment and laboratory facilities maintained by the Bureau of Mines at Duluth, Minnesota, were used in the research program, which was conducted as a mining engineering graduate research problem by the present writer under the direction of T. L. Joseph and E. P. Pfleider. The radio units used in the research program were designed and built to specification solely to conduct tests of radio communication in mines. Two identical units were used in all tests. Each unit contained a transmitter section, a receiver section, and a power-supply section, mounted on a single chassis. The entire unit was enclosed in a single 10x12x18-in. metal case provided with a leather-strap handle for carrying purposes. The front of the case was hinged to open upward and provide easy access to the single control panel on which all controls were mounted. Storage batteries supplied the operating power for all tests. Standard 6-v automobile batteries were utilized to provide adequate capacity to conduct tests for a full day without exhausting the battery. A frequency range from 30 to 200 kc was covered in eight pre-fixed steps on each unit. The carrier frequencies were crystal-controlled and amplitude-modulated. The receiver employed an essentially standard superheterodyne circuit and was sufficiently sensitive to detect signal strengths of 5 micro v. A heterodyne circuit was employed in the transmitter to obtain the low-carrier frequencies used in the units. Power output of the transmitter, usually less than 2 w, rarely exceeded 3 w in any test. Tests were conducted in mines on the Vermillion iron range in Minnesota, the Gogebic iron range in Wisconsin, the Menominee and Marquette iron ranges in Michigan, and a copper mine in the upper Michigan peninsula. All tests were conducted when the mines were operating normally, and usual mining, maintenance, and transportation activities were in progress, so that any interference caused by normal production activities could be evaluated during the tests. Tests were made between different points underground in each mine, and between underground and surface points at some mines. Test readings obtained at any one mine were calibrated in the laboratory before another series of tests were begun at the next mine. The transmitter and receiver were separated by one or more levels in each test, and generally there was no other means of communication between test points. Two 100-ft lengths of rubber-covered wire were used for antenna wires on each unit in both transmission and reception. The ends of the wires were connected to ground points in one of several methods, depending upon physical conditions at each test site. The wires were clipped to metal rods about 200 ft apart in the back, side, or bottom of the mine opening where the character of the rock permitted driving rods. Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915. In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various boiate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 122 m (400 ft) deep, 910 m (3000 ft) long and 305 m (1000 ft wide). The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% colemanite (CB6011 5H20), about 40% probertite (NaCaB50g 5H20), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBgOg 5H20). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade colemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder, which is the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content, which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations. Laboratory Calcination and Air Tabling Tests Laboratory calcination tests showed that substantial upgrading of the borate could be accomplished by calcining followed by screening of the calcined material. Removal of the + 28 mesh calcine resulted in borate losses of less than 10% with a rejection of 40 weight % or more of the calcine. The minus 65 mesh calcine generally met the requirement of containing 48%, or more, B203. The minus 28 plus 65 mesh material contained an intermediate quantity of borate and would require additional treatment. Testing demonstrated that ore would not have to be reduced to a size finer than 19 mm (3/4 in.) prior to calcination. A temperature range from 400 to 455OC (750 to 850°F) was apparently satisfactory. Calcination at a temperature of 48Z°C (900°F), or higher, was unsatisfactory due to fusion. All laboratory calcination tests were static tests conducted by placing small covered charges in a laboratory furnace for 40 min. In all tests vapor issues from the furnace for 5 to 7 min. Following this period the ore could be heard "popping," due to decrepitation of the colemanite. The reaction generally continued for approximately one-half hour. Various size fractions of the calcination products from laboratory tests were subjected to laboratory air tabling tests, usually after removing the plus 28 mesh material. Laboratory air tabling tests were conducted employing a Whippet V-80 model air table manufactured by Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. now known as Tripple S Dynamics. Variables include both end and side-tilt, speed of vibration, and quantity of air rising through the deck. In addition to the variables in the machine itself, the feed rate is also a rather critical variable. Testing demonstrated that all - 28 mesh size fractions of the calcine could be successfully concentrated to 48% F2O3 or greater. For the finer material recoveries into the concentrate were between 85 and 90% of the borate. With the coarser material a substantial amount of middling was produced which required cleaner tabling. Laboratory calcination and air tabling tests indicated a process whereby the borate could be concentrated to about 50% B203 with borate recoveries approaching 90%. Moreover, the iron content of the concentrate was well below the required specification of 0.3% Fe2O3. Pilot Plant Calcination Following the laboratory test work described above, pilot plant testing was conducted to prove the process, provide data for engineering studies, and provide product for a prospective purchaser. The kiln used was 0.9 m-diam (3 ft) by 9.0 m (30 ft) long and had a belly section 1.2 m-diam (4 ft) by 2.74 m (9 ft) long near the discharge end. The kiln was operated at a speed of 0.7 rpm. Gas was fired into the kiln at an average rate of 27.1 m3/hr (958.4 cu ft per hr). The air to gas ratio used was 10:1. The ore was fed to the kiln countercurrent to the flame and discharged through a hopper into a screw conveyor which discharged to a 1.2 m (48 in.) Sweco separator. The separator had 28, 65, and 150 mesh screen cloths, with the plus 28 mesh fraction being discarded. The minus 28 mesh fractions were later subjected to air tabling. The exit gases, containing some calcine dust, were swept through two cyclones to recover the dust. The gases then were scrubbed in a Ducon scrubber; very little dust reported past the first cyclone. PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. "Titanium is a widely distributed, dark grey metal1ic element found in small quantities in many minerals. It has no important uses." Happily, this early quotation proved to be wrung; titanium has, on the contrary, found a large number of very important uses. The error in the 1926 quotation illustrates the problems associated with forecasting the future development of any metal. 'The paper will nevertheless attempt to estimate what will happen to the European titanium industry over the coming decade with slightly more accuracy. It was not until 1955 that anything other than pilot plant facilities were installed in Europe. In 1955 IMI's plant in England, two plants in Germany, one in France and one in Sweden came into operation. All the companies associated with titanium installed melting furnaces but only IMI Titanium has forging and rolling facilities devoted solely to the production of titanium. The other firms rely on the use of equipment of their parent steel companies for processing the me1 ted titanium ingots.

ALTHOUGH the United States has long led all other countries in both the production and consumption of mineral products, the trend seems definitely toward an increasing dependence upon foreign sources of supply. This is not to take the position that we are either a have or a have-not nation. For years we shall continue to secure a large proportion of our needed minerals: from our own mines, but we must face the fact that this century has seen "a more thorough and intense development of the mineral resources of the United States and a greater depletion of its irreplaceable mineral reserves than has occurred in most other countries. An audit of our mineral production given in the attached charts discloses the extent of our deficiencies. Because of these facts, low-cost foreign sources offer a promising field for the investment of a portion of our mining capital and an opportunity to obtain for the United States a greater supply of strategic metals and minerals. How. ever, to reach this end, the industrialist investing in the foreign field must have the full co-operation and strong backing of the Federal Government and the involved Federal agencies.

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years' operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. DURING the past few years numerous references have been made in the technical press and Bureau of Mines Bulletin 270 to sponge iron' and so-called "direct metal" processes. The idea has been prevalent that sponge iron and "direct metals" are cheap commodities. In many instances it has been proposed that these processes be used to treat low-grade ores, utilizing low-grade coals as reducing agents. It is questionable whether or not high-grade sponge iron can be made from low-grade materials. Particles contain¬ing iron oxide and gangue become, upon almost complete deoxidation, particles containing metallic' iron and gangue. The possibility of mechanically separating the metallic iron from the gangue in these particles depends . on the physical characteristics of the particular ore under treatment. Some ores, in which the minerals constituting the gangue break free from the iron oxide upon crushing, may be concentrated magnetically after the iron oxides have been reduced to metal. The finely disseminated ores are least amenable to concentration. In general, high-grade sponge iron can only be made from high-grade raw materials. Recent literature shows that pronounced increases in oil recovery can result from the use of miscible systems in recovery operations. This literature also points out certain problems associated with maintaining miscibility, e.g., compositional changes resulting from alterations in pressure and temperature or from zone dilution. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study miscible zones for possible use in waterflooding operations and examine the manner in which these zones break down. The fluid system selected for study was oil—terNary-butyl alcohol—water, which, because of its narrow range of miscibility, is ideally suited for investigation in short, linear systems. The laboratory-observed effects on oil recovery and zone stability of a number of variables are reported. Among the variables investigated were miscible zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, and interstitial water saturation. Results obtained with this system show that interstitial water adversely affects recoveries because of premature phase break. Salinity of the water further aggravates Ais situation. This effect, although pronounced for this system, would probably occur in any fluid system containing an alcohol. As expected, viscosity ratio has a decided influence on recovery efficiency and zone stability. The results also show that use of a suficieno zone size, even though the system has poor phase characteristics, yields higher oil recoveries than are obtained from straight water floods. Length-of-travel studies showed a square root relationship between zone growth and path length for favorable viscosity ratios. No such clear-cut dependence was observed under unfavorable viscosity conditions. INTRODUCTION As new oil reserves have become increasingly more difficult and expensive to find and develop, the oil industry has devoted more and more time and money to finding more efficient methods for exploiting known reserves. The increasing number of water floods is one manifestation of this attempt to improve oil recoveries from existing fields. Since considerable quantities of oil are by-passed by the waterflood process, it is only a partial answer to the problem. The search continues. Of late, several proposed processes have received the critical attention of investigators. Among them are gas drives, in situ thermal reactions and miscible displacements. The present paper is concerned with miscible displacements in conjunction with water floods. Recent literature1- reports that, under proper conditions, oil recoveries from LPG floods, propane sweeps, condensing gas drives, etc., approach 100 per cent of the oil in place in the region contacted by the flood. This literature also points out some of the problems associated with these processes, one of the main ones being the maintaining of miscibility. Compositional changes resulting from pressure and temperature variations or from zone dilution give rise to phase breaks and loss of miscibility, the conclusion being that, after loss of miscibility, much of the beneficial influence of the zone is lost.' The results of the subject work show that, if sufficient zone material exists ahead of a phase interface, considerable improvement in oil recovery can be obtained. In order to increase our understanding of the behavior of miscible systems as they degenerate into immiscible processes, a laboratory system having rapid deterioration characteristics was needed. The fluid system oil—ter tiary-butyl alcohol (TBA)—water possesses these properties and was the system investigated. Although these fluids are different from those generally employed in miscible studies, an understanding of their behavior can be applied to other miscible slug processes. However, under conditions where mass transfer maintains a miscible system through multiple contacts, e.g., enriched gas drive or high pressure gas drive, the observed behavior of alcohol zones would not be applicable. The variables of interest were zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, initial water saturation, rate and core characteristics. Of these, only the effects of the following on zone breakdown and oil recovery are reported in detail: (1) zone size, (2) path length, and (3) initial water saturation. The effects of viscosity ratio and core characteristics are discussed in conjunction with other variables. Although initial water saturation is not envisioned as important to the phase behavior of hydrocarbon systems, e.g., LPG, it is important in alcohol systems.
