This text is intended to provide the operator and turn-key contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science, however, the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to metallic ores .

WHEN I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in 1916-that is, about 25 years ago-in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father ¬Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother-Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature. is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable, tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass . . . by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half-initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes-and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. It tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. Its application, in absence of true equilibrium, is like determining density with a telescope or even with a tuning fork; it is like the mad tea party at which the butter put into the works "f the watch was the best butter. Definite transition behavior was found in unalloyed titanium at 0.13 pct 0 equivalent. The addition of 0.5 Sn, 1.0 Al, 0.5 Al, and 1.0 Sn lowers the tvansition temperature of titanium at oxygen equivalents exceeding 0.22, 0.29, 0.40, and 0.51, respectively. Metallographic evidence indicates that progressive amounts of oxygen restrict deformation at low temperatures resulting eventually in brittle fracture. The presence of tin or aluminum is thought to alter the atomic distribution of oxygen within the titanium lattice in such a manner as to facilitate some degree of slip and twinning. 1 ITANIUM-like iron and zinc experiences a transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature. The presence of sufficient quantities of the interstitial elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in solid solution, has been shown to progressively lower the room-temperature impact resistance of titanium with increasing interstitial content.1"1 Ogden,et al,2 reported finding no transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature in iodide titanium. However, a definite transition was found to occur at 0.36 pct 0 equivalent in an alloy containing 0.47 pct carbon in solid solution. The oxygen equivalent in this case was obtained by assuming the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in combination on the impact properties of titanium to be additive on the same basis as their separate effects on tensile strength, namely: Oe = 2/3 (pct C) + pet 0 + 2 (pet N) They concluded that the tendency toward transition behavior is dependent on the total interstitial content in solid solution and not on any one particular interstitial element. Rennhack,4 however, recently found transition behavior in iodide titanium at an oxygen equivalent of 0.17 pct. Ogden, etal3, reported that the strengthening effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in titanium decrease with the addition of tin. They showed that tin additions increase the tolerance of titanium for the interstitials, that is, 10 pct Sn permitted individual additions of up to 0.4 wt pct of the interstitial elements without any significant loss in ductility. Aluminum tends to decrease ductility and impact strength of titanium for a given interstitial ~ontent.3 Van Thyne and Kessler5 found that the solid solubility of carbon in titanium doubled in the presence of 10 pct Al. The precise effects of tin and aluminum in the nrespncp of rorvfen nn the impact properties of titanium had previously not been determined. The high oxygen tolerance of titanium containing tin may provide a suitable means for improving the impact properties of titanium containing the interstitial elements, particularly oxygen. Unlike tin, however, aluminum has a high affinity for oxygen and will reduce rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)by a thermit-type reaction.6 Thus, the atomic distribution of oxygen in titanium might be different in the presence of aluminum. The present work was undertaken to: 1) Determine the effect of oxygen on the transition behavior of unalloyed iodide titanium. 2) Determine the effect of small amounts of tin and aluminum on the transition behavior of iodide titanium in the presence of oxygen and other interstitial~. EXPERIMENTAL Three different lots of iodide titanium were employed to prepare the alloys studied in the present work. Their chemical composition is presented in Table I. The compositions of the tin and aluminum used for alloying are shown in Table 11. Oxygen additions were made using calcined rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)of 99.7 pct purity. Mathematical modeling and computer simulation are the two primary techniques used for production analysis of underground coal mine layouts. Oftentimes, however, the selection between these two techniques is not based on an awareness of the level of effort needed for input formulation versus the suitability of the desired output. This paper will review mathematical modeling and two of the more prominent simulators (Virginia Tech's FACESIM and Penn State's UGMHS) used in underground coal mine production analysis. A hypothetical section will be analyzed by these programs and, based on the results of the aforementioned study, their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed.

This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique that, when used with a streamline model, causes a "bundle" of one-dimensional (1-D) problems to reduce to a single 1-D calculation. The 1-D bundle is the streamline representation of a two-dimensional (2-D) problem. The 1-D calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desktop calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. Publications concerning scaling laws for laboratory flow models of oil reservoirs indicate that the relative permeability and capillary pressure relations must be the same functions of saturation in the model and its prototype. In this paper, the relative permeabilities and saturations are redefined in a way which permits one to have diflerent relative permeability and capillary pressure relations in the model and prototype. The development of the new scaling criteria is demonstrated by deriving scaling laws for one simple flow problem. INTRODUCTION The successful application of information gathered through bench-scale model studies to the prediction of multi-phase fluid flow behavior in petroleum reservoirs requires careful consideration of the scaling criteria. The requirements which must be met for a small-scale model to duplicate the behavior of a much larger reservoir prototype have been discussed by Leverett, et al,' Rapoport,2 and Geertsma, et al.3 According to these authors, the relative permeabilities to water, oil and gas and the dimensionless capillary pressures must be the must have the same values in the model and prototype. Furthermore, they point out that the viscosity ratios must have the same values in the model and prototype. In addition to these requirements, other scaling criteria are given which, when considered, usually dictate a much higher permeability in the model than exists in the reservoir. Since the more permeable model sands may have connate-water and residual oil saturations quite different from those in the prototype, the scaling requirements pertaining to the dependence of relative permeabilities and dimension l ess capillary pressures on saturation usually are not met. Also, if the model fluids are selected to give equal viscosity ratios in the model and prototype, one may find greatly different mobility ratios* in the two cases and, therefore, may expect grossly different flow patterns. For this reason, Craig, et al,' correlated the results of their model studies with mo- bility ratio rather than with viscosity ratio. As yet, however, no satisfactory method has been advanced which permits use of anything other than the scaling requirements outlined in the previously mentioned papers. The purpose of this paper is to present a method of developing a set of scaling criteria which permits different relationships between saturation and relative permeability or capillary pressure in the model and prototype. Rather than attempt to report scaling criteria for a variety of practical situations, this paper demonstrates by use of one simple example how the modified scaling criteria are derived.

CONSIDERING the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

In hard, discontinuous rocks, failure modes and stability are controlled to a great extent by the intersection of discontinuities with the excavated surface. We have solved the general problem of finding the shape and size of all blocks formed through the inter- section of any number of joints and excavation surfaces and will demonstrate a simple graphical method for determining which of these is the "keyblock." An example will explain this methodology applied to a simple open pit. The effects of slope curvature in plan or section, will be demonstrated. Finally, we will show how to determine the optimum orientations for the cut slopes. The methodology is based upon a powerful topologic theorem concerning the finiteness of spatial intersections. This paper is a companion to another dealing with underground openings in the Proceedings of the 22nd Symposium on Rock Mechanics (MIT) , July 1981. This paper discusses the rock blocks created by the intersection of discontinuities and excavation surfaces in a rock mass. It establishes principles and procedures by means of which those blocks that are finite and critically located can be identified and described. The main assumptions are the following: 1. The rock itself is assumed to be strong so that the only concern for stability is the movement of rock blocks them- selves.

AmonG the things that will always remain to the credit of the foundry-industry is the circumstance that nearly all the research-work of practical value in daily routine was done by active foundrymen, and the results were freely given by them to the world. Moreover, while consumers felt that to them was due a more systematic and exact method of work, the foundry-men again were the first to act in the establishment of specifications under which their product should be sold. To come to more recent times, the American Foundrymen's Association has not only made an elaborate series of tests on cast-iron, and adopted tentative specifications based upon them, but, in addition, it has urged the International Association for Testing Materials, through its American representatives, to make the testing and specification of cast-iron a distinct issue. The half-hearted support first granted was greatly augmented by the rapidly-growing recognition accorded to the enormous iron-casting industry; and when the president of the American Society for Testing Materials was instructed to ask for a special commission for this purpose, Europe was ready to cooperate. During the Buda-Pesth congress, at, which America was represented by Prof. Howe, Mr. Wood and myself, it was decided to add five members to the general committee on steel and iron, whose special duty should be to conserve the interests of the cast-iron branch of the industry. America took up the work at once, and enlarged its committee to 67 members, all of whom were actively concerned in the manufacture or study of cast-iron in all of its branches. At the organization-meeting in Philadelphia, April 25, 1903, Mr. Walter Wood was elected chairman, and myself secretary; and, within a week thereafter, the sub-committees were appointed and became active at once. ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data-at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is , even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a Standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

The purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title " Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. I will refer but briefly at the beginning to the microscope and its uses in our inspection. It is only very recently that the Bureau of Ordnancc has furnished certain of its inspection offices with a portable Tassin outfit for the microscopic examination of steel. Since that

A numerical formulation of bigh-order accuracy, based on variational methods, is proposed for the solution of multidimensional diffusion-convection-type equations. Accurate solutions are obtained without the difficulties that standard finite difference approximations present. In addition, tests show that accurate solutions of a one-dimensional problem can be obtained in the neighborhood of a sharp front without the need for a large number of calculations for the entire region of interest. Results using these variational methods are compared with several standard finite difference approximations and with a technique based on the method of characteristics. The variational methods are shown to yield higher accuracies in less computer time. Finally, it is indicated how one can use these attractive features of the variational methods for solving miscible displacement problems in two dimensions. INTRODUCTION The problem of finding suitable numerical approximations for equations describing the transport of heat or mass by diffusion and convection simultaneously has been of interest for some time. Equations of this type, which will be called diffusionconvection equations, arise in describing many diverse physical processes. Of particular interest here is the equation describing the process by which one miscible liquid displaces another liquid in a one-dimensional porous medium. The behavior of such a system is described by the following parabolic partial differential equation:

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

MINE operators today are paying increased attention to the mechanization of drilling operations as an important factor in increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. Recent progress in the design of drill jibs for mounting on drill carriages, or jumbos, has done much to advance the mechanization of mining methods. This progress has introduced new opportunities in the application of "jib jumbos" that are worth serious consideration. An attempt will be made here to classify the various types of jumbos and drill mountings available for level development and flat stope work, t6 indicate applications, and to measure their effectiveness in relation to their cost. The data here are based on a wide variety of field usage, and are offered only to point up, in a general way, the relative efficiency in proportion to cost. It should be remembered that any contemplated jumbo installation must be studied to determine what type of installation is most suitable, considering ground conditions, loading, timbering and haulage equipment, service available, and attitude of manpower. Early Drill Carriages: The advantages of some sort of a drill carriage were recognized at the time rock drills were introduced. In drift or heading operations where a fairly standard drill round and cross section were anticipated, as well as in flat bedded deposits where standard slabbing rounds were used, track and crawler-mounted drills found an early application. These first drill jumbos were little more than drill carriers, designed locally and manufactured with materials at hand. Of comparatively simple construction, function, and low capital cost, they usually consisted of a hinged column which supported one or more drills on arms or universal bars. When the column was pivoted vertically, the drills were moved into position. Screw jack extensions reached from the column to the roof and floor to hold the drill rigid. In some cases, particularly in tunnel jumbos, enough weight was carried that rail clamps or roof jacks were sufficient. Many of these column and arm-type jumbos, usually equipped with air and water manifolds, steel racks, and staging for drillers, are still in use today. Some have employed air or hydraulic extensions for securing the columns. They offer the equip-saving advantage of having all the necessary out, ment together, and they un be moved i and t. set up and torn down as a unit. Boom-type Jumbos: When the advantages of to column-type jumbo were seen, operators could to realize the further gains possible. More time could be saved with mechanical assistance to position api drill vertically. A rack on the column and a pinion on the arm for raising and lowering the drill in the manner of a quarry bar were tried with some success. The most outstanding solution to the vertical handling problem was reached with the boom-type of jumbo. Here two or more machines were mounted on a cross arm at the end of a boom that was pivoted at the rear of the track. This was raised and lowered by various mechanical aids. Occasionally air or hydraulic power was used. Nearly all of today's wagon drills use this boom-type principle. Boom jumbos represent a savings in time and physical effort expended in raising and lowering the drills. The boom must be balanced by the roof of the truck which is secured by rail clamps or type jacks. The most successful application of areawhere this of jumbo has been in the Tri-State area where multiple long-feed machines are used on caterpillar-mounted, boom-type jumbos for slabbing

THE ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepared with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. a, the angle at maximum load in four cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. The treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dis solved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it call pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settinga—a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carbonization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart,3 and Peele.4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal .from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product. INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.
