Experimental work on the process was begun on a laboratory scale at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914, and transferred to East St. Louis, Ill. in 1916, where a commercial sized furnace was in technical operation until January, 1918. The essential steps of the process are as follows: Oxidized zinc ore or roasted zinc concentrate is mixed with crushed coke and coal-tar pitch and formed into briquets 9.25 in. (23.5 cm.) in diameter and 21 in. (53 cm.) long in a manner similar to that used in the manufacture of graphite or carbon electrodes, except that much less care and time are required. The composition varies with the nature of the ore; in one case, the composition was 100 parts ore, 70 parts coke, and 18 to 20 parts pitch. These briquets maintain their form and volume during and after the distillation of the zinc. This object is gained by using coke as the matrix and coal-tar pitch as the binder; this pitch becomes coke on heating and unites the ore particle and the original coke particle into a continuous mass. The briquet is an electrical conductor but only to such a degree that it can be used as a resistor. The size of the ore, as in the present practice of zinc metallurgy, ranges from fine material, such as flotation concentrate, to coarse table and fine jig concentrate. The process is not restricted to any particular kind of ore, but is applicable to pure high-grade ores, ores high in iron, and complex zinc-lead ores, since the residue from the distillation IS held immovably in place within the briquet. In the case of complex zinc-lead ores, the distillation is conducted with a carefully regulated temperature so that a high percentage of lead is retained in the distilled briquet, which may then be smelted for its lead content. In present zinc smelting practice, the reduction fuel is from 40 to 50 per cent. of the weight of the ore. In the briquet, it is from 60 to 85 per cent. of the ore; but unless the ore is exceptionally high in residue, the distilled briquet may be used over again as coke, or as a high ash coke for fuel purposes in power production. PREVIOUS determinations1,2,3 of the texture of magnesium and its alloys have shown only slight variations in the principal features of the structure. This investigation presents pole figures for magnesium and two of its alloys, in which differences of some magnitude will be shown. Schmid and Wassermann have considered the texture of magnesium in analogy with that of zinc-also a hexagonal lattice. Whereas the zinc texture is said to be derived primarily through basal slip and secondarily through {102}† twinning, the {102} twinning is considered impossible at the later stages of the rolling in magnesium because of its smaller axial ratio. This state of affairs appears reasonable for pure magnesium, but for alloy textures the situation is more complex. A double orientation similar to that found in zinc has been reported by J. D. Hanawalt,4 and the addition of small amounts of calcium to magnesium and its alloys to produce a double texture was noted by J. C. McDonald.5 The pole figures of this investigation, using an improved X-ray technique, show these various textures. The dependence of directional properties of rolled sheet on modifications of texture is well recognized. Correlation of physical properties with existing texture should be even more significant if quantitative valuations are attached to the various areas on the pole figures. Such a quantitative technique is developed herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two alloys were used, besides high-purity magnesium. In each case, the metal was extruded to bars 32 in. thick and hot-rolled to a thickness of about 0.075 in. It had been established previously that such a reduction was more than sufficient to eliminate the extruded structure. The rolling proceeded in the same direction as that of the extrusion, without any cross rolling. The temperatures corresponded to normal commercial practice, averaging around 600°F. A unique method of preparing the sample was developed in this work. Instead of using a flat specimen, a stem of the metal was cut out of the rolled sheet in the desired direction (rolling direction) as shown in Fig. 2. From a sheet of 0.075 to 0.065-in. gauge, the stem was cut to a square cross section with a jeweler's saw, rounded with a file and polishing paper to a diameter of 0.060 in, and evenly etched in dilute hydrochloric acid to a diameter of 0.038 ± 0.001 in. In this way, a cylinder of the original sheet with its axis in the desired direction was produced. By using this type of specimen for the pin-point pictures, any variance in the absorption of the diffracted beam at the various angular settings of the specimen, was completely eliminated.*

Samuel T. Wellman, Cleveland pioneer steel man, who was often referred to as the "father of the open-hearth process of the United States," died suddenly on July 11, 1919, of heart disease, at Stratton, Me. For more than half a century, he was closely identified with the improvement of equipment used in the making of steel and contributed a number of inventions that virtually revolutionized the industry. Mr. Wellman was born Feb. 5, 1847, at Wareham, Mass., his father at the time being superintendent of the Nashua Iron Co., Nashua, N. H. After attending public school and a year at Norwich University, he served in the Civil War as a corporal of the first New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He went to Pittsburgh in 1867 and assisted in starting the first crucible steel melting furnace built in America at the works of Anderson, Cook & Co. It melted a ton of steel with an average of 1000 Ib. of nut coal, which cost less than $1, while the melting of a ton of steel in crucibles in the old fashioned coke furnace took three tons of the very best coke, costing from $2 to $3 per ton. This furnace was a great success and in a very few years had driven the coke furnace out of use. From Anderson, Cook & Co., Mr. Wellman went to the Singer, Nimick & Co. works, Pittsburgh, where he built two crucible steel melting furnaces of the same type. After that he spent some time in the office of the Siemens agents in Boston and also at steel works in different parts of the country, starting crucible steel furnaces. He then went to the Bay State Iron Works in South Boston, Mass., where he built the first open-hearth furnace that was a commercial success in the United States. It made steel of a much better quality than had previously been made in this country. The principal use to which it was put in those days was the manufacture of locomotive fire-boxes. From South Boston, he went hack to the old works in New Hampshire where his father was still superintendent, and built for it an open-hearth furnace, a plate mill, and a bar mill. In 1873, Mr. Wellman went to Cleveland to design and build the plant of the Otis Steel Co. He remained with this company for 16 years as engineer and superintendent. During this time he developed the open-hearth charging machine and introduced the electromagnet for handling pig iron and scrap steel. The first charging machine was operated by hydraulic power, and although it was not entirely satisfactory it performed the work fairly well and encouraged its inventor to build another one, which was driven by electric motors. IN a study of the rate of decomposition of %-in. cubes of limestone, dolomitic limestone, and dolomite in a sweeping nitrogen atmosphere, Joseph, Beatty, and Bitsianes' found that the zone of calcination advanced at substantially a constant rate at a given temperature. The purpose of this paper is to show that their data indicate at least two processes occurring when the above carbonates decompose. It is suggested that there are two processes occurring consecutively, one the limiting process in a given temperature range and the other the limiting process over another temperature range. Many methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,l or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,' cement copper.ll 4. Response surface methodology is a well-known and powerful technique for determining optimum conditions in flotation systems. One disadvantage is the onerous task of the numerical calculations and curve plotting. This paper describes a system in which the investigator simply selects the range of several flotation variables after which the design of the experiment, data analysis, generation of response surface equations, and response surface plots are automatically carried out using a digital computer and a computer-driven curve plotter. Several typical response surfaces of important variables in phosphate flotation are presented as examples.

Large striation-free single crystals of bismuth have been grown from the melt by rapid freezing. Zone-refined bismuth, together with doping impurities if desired, is placed in a shallow flat-bottomed graphite boat and melted in air with a propane hand torch. The torch is then withdrawn in a manner which causes the melt to freeze direction-ally. Crystallization, which resuires only a few minutes, usually results in the formation of a single crystal even when a seed crystal is not used. Crys -tals of any desired orientation may be grown by using oriented seeds. Undoped crystals grown by this method have residual resistivity ratios greater than 200. THE growth of large single crystals of bismuth by either the Czochralski or horizontal zoning technique is not entirely satisfactory. Specifically, difficulties are encountered in producing single crystals of the required dimensions in all desired orientations, and striations caused by low-angle polysynthetic twins are frequently present in the crystals. In addition, both methods are time-consuming and require special apparatus of some complexity. A simpler method has now been developed for growing large striation-free bismuth single crystals of desired orientation in a short time. Fig. 1 shows a typical setup consisting of a rectangular graphite boat which contains zone-refined bismuth, a 1/8-in.-thick flat quartz plate which covers the entire inner bottom of the boat, and three additional quartz plates about 1/4 in. thick which are used to separate the bismuth from the graphite everywhere except at a small area at the left of the boat. The graphite boat is 1 in. high, and its sides and bottom are about 1/8 in. thick. The quartz plates should be smooth and clean. The graphite boat is heated from the right with a propane torch, as shown in Fig. 1, until the bismuth is completely melted. The melt has the shape of a triangle with a narrow neck at the apex farthest from the torch. The melt is frozen direc-tionally by gradually moving the torch toward the right, away from the boat. The bismuth in contact with the graphite, at the left end of the neck, freezes first. The freezing interface then moves down the neck into the main bulk of material, where it develops a convex shape ideal for the continuation of single-crystal growth. The interface continues to move through the melt until the entire bulk is solid. The entire procedure may be completed, in air, in a matter of minutes. The technique described almost always yields a single crystal whose basal plane is nearly perpendi,cular to the bottom of the graphite boat. In earlier experiments, in which the bottom of the melt was in direct contact with the graphite boat, single crystals were grown with basal planes parallel, perpendicular, or at some intermediate angle to the bottom of the boat. At times the orientation of the bulk of the material differed from the orientation of the material in the narrow neck. In these cases, a nucleation site initiated the growth of a differently oriented crystal, and the thermal conditions favored the new orientation over the initial one. The thermal conditions depend on a number of factors, including the heating technique, the placement, shape, and thickness of the quartz plates, the thickness of the walls and bottom of the graphite boat, and the quantity of bulk bismuth employed. All of these factors, plus the initial orientation and the presence and effectiveness of nucleation sites, will determine the orientation of the final large single-crystal slab. When a crystal of specific orientation is desired, an oriented section of a rapid-freeze crystal is shaped by spark cutting and grinding for use as a seed. To grow a doped crystal, the desired impurity is placed in the graphite boat together with the bismuth chunks and seed. Crystals doped with mercury, cadmium, lead, and selenium have been grown. The rate of freezing is so great that the distribution coefficient of any impurity approximates unity. On a gross scale, therefore, impurities should be more homogeneously distributed in rapid-freeze crystals than in Czochralski or zoned crystals. Because of the possibility of constitutional supercooling, however, it is quite possible that impurities are not homogeneously distributed on a microscopic scale in the rapid-freeze crystals. Generally the single crystal slabs which have been prepared are initially 5 to 7 mm thick. Thicker crystals may be obtained by using one of these slabs as a seed. The following pages summarize the causes that led to the suggestion of unit operation of the paloma field, the organization of com-mittees, preparation of the Paloma Operators Agreement and the reasons for rejection of the plan. Introduction Long ago an Austrian physicist observed that under certain conditions the condensation of a liquid from gaseous mixtures resulted from pressure reduction. Some 50 years later he would have known that his research was not in vain. He would have seen a group of serious operators and engineers seeking to apply that principle to a conservation . program for unitized production in the Paloma gas field—but he would also have been saddened to see that forces unsympathetic to the application of science in oil production, with little or no appreciation of modern methods and the advantages of cooperation, so far have prevented the adoption of that program. Soon after the Paloma field was discovered it was realized that all the hydrocarbons in the reservoir existed in the gaseous phase. This condition was confirmed over a large area. Therefore, if the field was to be properly exploited with the greatest ultimate recovery of condensate, the hydrocarbons in the reservoir must be produced in the single or gas phase. They must be cautiously extracted with the least possible reduction of the natural pressure. If this could be accomplished, or if artificial pressure control were utilized, the condensation and underground loss of the valuable distillate would be preventable—otherwise it would not be. Wholehearted cooperation of all oper-ators was required in order to accomplish the conservation purposes of the program. To this end the production engineers of the several companies concerned lent their time and talents. They fully investigated the physical relationships of the products within the complicated gaseous mixture, prepared extensive reports on the subject and drew up a reasonably efficient plan of operations, which now is commonly called the "Paloma Unit Plan" but actually was entitled "The Paloma Operators Agreement." All of the engineers were not in perfect agreement on all the features of the plan, or even on all the engineering principles. However, it is safe to say that on all the important or essential factors there was a unanimity of opinion, particularly as to the objectives. These were fairly simple and reduce to one controlling item, "pressure control" by cycling or recycling. Organization The principal operators initiated the program by calling a meeting of all the lessees in the area, at which an organization was perfected, known as the "Paloma Operators Committee." Various subcommittees were appointed to expedite the work, including an "Engineering Committee." These func-tioned in a businesslike manner, frequently reported to the superior committee and

A SHORT and accurate method for the estimation of manganese in iron and steel is of great advantage to Bessemer works, and I think it may be of interest to some of the members of the Institute to give in detail the process in use in the laboratory of the Edgar Thomson steel works. The process is based on the reaction first described by Beilstein and Jawein.* The steel, spiegel, or iron is dissolved in strong nitric acid, sp. gr. 1.½. Evaporation to dryness is not necessary, unless the amount of silicon is large, as in the case of certain pig irons. Then, as a clogging of the filter in the subsequent filtration is apt to follow, dissolve first in a dish in hydochloric acid, quickly evaporate to dryness, redissolve in the strong nitric acid, boil, and while boiling throw in crystals of chlorate of potash from time to time. Various mathematical models and expressions to describe the behavior of a hydrocyclone have been presented in the literature (Lynch and Rao, 1977; Plitt, 1976; Plitt and Kawatra, 1977). Two of these models, by Lynch (1977) and by Plitt (1976), have been extensively used for process control studies (Kawatra and Thayer, 1879; Seitz and Kawatra, 1984). However, neither of these models relates the fineness of grind in a hydrocyclone overflow to the corrected efficiency curve of a hydrocyclone. If such a relationship were available, then one could relate fineness of grind to the operating variables using equation (1) or (2). A plant metallurgist is interested in knowing the fineness of grind rather than the dso(c) of a hydro- cyclone. As a consequence, several empirical relation- ships between fineness of grind and hydrocyclone operating variables are available. These relationships (Fewings, Wickham, and Wiseman, 1979; Manning, 1978; Watson, Cropton, and Brookes, 1970; Watts, Thompson, and White, 1978; Wiegal, 1973) have only a limited relationship with each other and have met with varying degrees of success. OIL burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coal fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.

THE purpose of this paper is to present data obtained from an investi-gation conducted on the grindability of coal by the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard ball-mill method. This investiga-tion has been conducted over a period of a year, during which time several hundred tests were run on a wide selection of different coals coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The data herewith presented tend to show that the tentative standard ball-mill method might give results that are misleading and that a volume measure might be more indicative of the true grindability 'of materials of varying specific gravity. A means whereby the time element might be reduced has been studied and other phases of this work such as preparation of samples, mechanical screening, reporting results and duplicating tests have been investigated. It is hoped that all criticism offered in this paper will be taken as constructive, with the purpose in mind of perfecting the method now tentative to show the true conditions and of making optional the manner in which certain parts of the test might be conducted to meet diversified laboratory conditions.

THE Transactions of the Institute afford abundant evidence of the general recognition by mining engineers of the importance of a safety-lamp which will not only give warning of the presence of fire-damp, but will also indicate the proportion in which it is present.' Mining-men are only too familiar with the frequent and sudden changes that constantly occur at the working-face of a gaseous mine. Nothing illustrates more forcibly the pregnant condition of the strata enfolding the seam and the seam itself, than the fact that a circulation of perhaps 150,000 cu. ft. of air may contain 2 or even 3 per cent. of marsh-gas, representing a volume of from 3,000 to 4,000 cu. ft. of this gas pouring-out each minute from the natural strata into the mine-workings. It would, indeed, be strange if this great outflow of gas were always constant, and it creates no surprise that such earth-breathings, as they may be called, are spasmodic and irregular in their wane and flow. There are other causes that act to vary the gaseous condition of mine-air. Gas has a tendency, often very manifest in mine-workings and airways, to stratify and, at times, to travel long distances in veins or streams. It is common to catch and lose the gas in the lamp when making a test. At times two lamps, held side by side in an air current, will indicate different gaseous conditions of the passing air. When testing for gas, the lamp may suddenly fill with flame, in a mine-chamber, where a moment before a careful test showed the presence of but 1 per cent. of gas. Duquesne Light Co.'s Portal No. 3 mine, in the Warwick group of mines in Southwestern Pennsylvania, was started in June 1965 with battery- powered tractor-trailer face haulage. The area as- signed to Portal No. 3 encompasses over 8000 acres of coal and will be developed by driving a set of main entries through the center of the tract in roughly a westerly direction, and sub mains on a 45º deflection angle in roughly a northerly direction (Figs 1 & 2). In the original planning these sub mains were to be at a 90º angle with the mains, but difficult roof conditions necessitated a change in plans. The entries and crosscuts are driven 18 ft wide in the normal Sewickley seam which varies between 46 and 56 in. high. The mine bottom is a strong shale and in average, cool or dry outside conditions stands up well for rubber-tired haulage equipment, but when the outside conditions are hot and humid, the bottom becomes soft and muddy. This condition lessens as the mine faces are advanced further from the portals because the condensation will then take place principally on the surfaces of intake entries outby the working areas. To aid the situation, an air cooling system was installed and is used as conditions dictate.

THE properties required of gold alloys for jewelry are not well standardized, due in part to problems peculiar to certain branches of the jewelry industry, in part to the individual preference of the fabricator and to his willingness to cope with certain difficulties in manufacture, which arise with the use of certain alloys. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS In general, the properties desired may be classed as follows: 1. Color should conform to the dictates of good taste and smart style. 2. Corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance should be good. This is to a considerable extent determined by the carat. Resistance to such corrosive agents as mercuric chloride as well as certain depilatories is unreasonable to expect and difficult to meet. 3. Strength and hardness must be adequate to maintain the delicate contours of finely modeled jewelry. 4. Wear resistance must be great enough to resist abnormal wear, such as is encountered by a wedding ring in a lifetime of wear. 5. Ductility must be sufficient to permit the fabrication of drawn shells, tubes and difficult shapes. Material having a yield point of not less than 60,000 lb. per sq. in., an ultimate strength of 100,000 lb. per sq. in., and an elongation of 40 per cent. is desirable. 6. Melting point should be between 800° and 1200° C.

The coal picture in 1955 was much brighter than in 1954, when the tonnage produced dropped to the 1939 level. Bituminous coal and lignite production are expected to approach 465 million tons, against 392 million tons in 1954, an increase of about 19 pct. On the other hand, the production of anthracite declined about 7 pct to some 25 million tons. There was marked improvement in coal consumption in all industrial lines except railroads. At the end of November 1955 the largest consumer, electric power utilities, had used about 126 million tons, an increase of some 22 million tons over the previous year. Coke-oven consumption increased about 19 million tons and coal coked in beehive ovens increased about 1.5 million tons, due to heavy coke

Previous experience in leaching chalcopyrite with dilute sulfuric acid has generally resulted in rather poor extraction. However, the reaction rate of the leaching process can be significantly improved by an increase of the crystal lattice defects of the chalcopyrite. It was found that subjecting chalcopyrite to a milling action involving a strong impact, permits 99 percent of the copper to be extracted in a subsequent single leaching stage with at least stoichiometric quantities of sulfuric acid in the presence of oxygen at 100°C. Simultaneously, about 80 to 85 percent of the sulfide sulfur content is converted to elemental sulfur. The dependence of the reaction rate of chalcopyrite on the pretreatment, temperature, oxygen pressure and acid content will be discussed.

A river delivers a given load of sand, and hence heavy materials, into the sea. The load is fixed by drainage basin characteristics and processes. Wave energy available for redistributing that load is fixed in an entirely different way. An equilibrium diagram of these two parameters (load vs energy) pennits a tentative prediction of what will happen to the heavy minerals. Alluvial rivers transport a mechanical load which consists essentially of wash load (finer than about 0.05 mm in particle diam), bed load (coarser than about 0.10 mm) and the transition sizes in between. A few rivers carry no appreciable mechanical load, and are excluded from this discussion. An example of the latter is the Suwannee River of Florida, which empties across an oyster bar into the Gulf of Mexico and does not build a delta despite the absence of significant waves or currents in that part of the Gulf. An alluvial river may deliver its load into a protected sediment trap (such as an estuary, sound or lagoon), onto a low-energy coast (where it builds a delta) or onto a high-energy coast (from which spot the river load is swept away). The nature and disposition of the load depends, obviously, on three sets of factors: 1) drainage basin characteristics and processes, which determine quantity and make-up of the load; 2) coastal structure and geomorphology, which determine the kind of river-sea coupling which

With a realization of the rapidly increasing importance of automatic stokers as a medium for domestic heating, the Anthracite Institute Laboratory has conducted extensive investigations, over a period of several years, to determine the various outstanding characteristics of stoker design and performance. The purpose of this paper is to summarize these findings as a guide to current practices. Stokees Investigated One or more models of the underfeed stokers listed below were included in the various phases of this investigation: Beckley Gilkoal Burnwell Iron Fireman Combustioneer Motor Stokor Electric Furnace Man Norristown Super-stoker Erie Heat Generator Whitney Fire Ball (Tests Incomplete.) Fuel Saver Principles of Construction.—The operating principle of the leading makes of underfeed stokers is similar (Fig. 1). A plunger1 or slowly revolving worm2, conveys the buckwheat or rice sizes of anthracite to the center of a specially constructed tuyere pot where air is admitted to the coal through suitable ports of varying design. As the fuel burns, it is slowly forced to the outside circumference of the tuyere by the pressure of the incoming coal; eventually the ash falls over the edge of the pot, either entirely by gravity or aided by mechanical sweepers. In at least one model, the entire firepot revolves. While various special details have been included in the design of a number of stokers, they do not affect the general principles as described above, and therefore have not been included in this discussion.
