IN recent years zirconium and beryllium have become of great interest because of their special properties. Zirconium is known for its remarkable ability to absorb the gases oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen, has extensive use as a getter in electron tubes and has indeed become the primary metal in the manufacture of photoflash bulbs. Beryllium is of interest because it is light metal and as such could supplement aluminum and magnesium in light metal applications. The late development of zirconium ductile at room temperature produced by both the iodide and calcium reduction methods has stimulated frequent articles on this metal in the recent literature. Beryllium is so closely akin to zirconium crystall-ographically that some investigators are of the opinion that beryllium should be ductile at room temperature if it were pure enough. The crystallographic relationship of beryllium and zirconium, the interest created in Be-Zr alloys where the zirconium is believed to function as a remover of solid solution gas in beryllium and thus increase the ductility of the beryllium rich alloy, and the amenability of these metals to powder metallurgy methods stimulated this approach to an investigation of the system Be-Zr. Preliminary work showed that a zirconium compact melted when pressed in contact with a beryllium compact and sintered at 1250°C, without any apparent final bond between the two. A search of the literature revealed nothing pertinent about the Zr-Be system or about any zirconium - beryllium alloys. In 1936 Misch³ vaguely identified the compound ZrBe2 and reported that it has a deformed cubic structure. Two patents," , were issued to Mach-lett Laboratories in 1943 and in 1946 regarding the addition of small amounts of zirconium to beryllium in order to improve the ductility of beryllium so that it may better be used for X ray windows. In considering the alloy formation of beryllium with other metals Raynor thought it unlikely that zirconium would have any solid solubility in beryllium. From this indefinite information nothing could be ascertained about the possible use of Zr-Be alloys or the use of these metals intimately. A brief preliminary study of the system Zr-Be by powder metallurgy methods was undertaken to provide regions for more intense studies of Zr-Be alloys and as a guide to a formal phase diagram determination. The investigation described in the following pages was completed in less than three weeks. The usefulness of this rapid method to facilitate phase diagram studies and new alloy investigations will be shown. Materials and Procedure Zirconium powder was produced from crystal bar stock of high purity supplied by Foote Mineral Co. The crystal bar was converted to hydride at 730°C, crushed, and the hydride decomposed in purified argon at 850°C. 60 pct of the powder passed through a 325 mesh screen, 40 pct of the powder was —140 mesh, +325 mesh and the average particle size of the total was 8 to 12 microns. "Cement" means binding agent or glue. It is derived from the Latin word "Caementum," the name of a limestone, chips of which were used in mortar more than 2,000 years ago in Italy. During the middle ages "cement" or "cement" generally denoted mortar. Today it means any binding material. The Thomas Register lists nearly 200 classifications for "cement" including automobile cement, household cement, rubber cement, etc. The material most commonly associated with this word, however, is portland cement which, when mixed with water and allowed to hydrate, is a ceramic binding material used to cement aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand) together in "concrete," the most universally used building material of today. It is estimated that more tons of concrete are used annually than all other building materials put together including steel, lumber, gypsum, bricks, tiles, aluminum and glass. Its use in foundations, building construction, sanitary work, dams, railroads, and highways, makes it difficult to conceive of modem civilization without concrete. A survey made in October 1955 showed the following uses of portland cement: [Percent Highways20 Nonresidential buildings20 Residential buildings15 Military construction10 Sewer and water works8 Public utilities10 Other (conservation, farm, and maintenance and repair)17 100] As of today, the percentage for highways is probably even higher. Ceramic binding materials have unquestionably been used in construction work for thousands of years. The mortar between the blocks of the great pyramids was calcined gypsum (plaster of paris). The use of calcined and slaked limestone goes back earlier than the Roman Empire. Gypsum, however, is relatively soft, and common lime mortar is not "hydraulic," i.e., it does not harden under water. The Greeks and Romans discovered later that an addition of a finely divided active siliceous material (Santorin earth or Pozzolana) would react with slaked lime to form a stronger, and hydraulic, cement. The Appian Way in Italy, Colosseum, and the great Aqueducts built by the Romans were made with this type cement, and some of these structures are still in existence today. However, not until 1756 did some serious research result in the development of better cements. In that year the English engineer, John Smeaton produced a stronger cement by burning a limestone containing considerable proportions of clayey impurities. Other investigations and improvements were made by Bryan Higgins, Bergmann, Joseph Parker, L. J. Vicat, J. F. John, James Frost, and I. C. Johnson.2 Traditionally, but perhaps unfairly to others, the invention of the prototype of today's portland cement is credited to the English mason Joseph Aspdin who in 1824 obtained a patent and gave the product its name, because in color the mortar produced from it resembled a natural building stone obtained from the British Isle of Portland. The contributions of Johnson and Aspdin were primarily the important step of preparing a synthetic mixture of lime and clay without depending on raw materials found in nature which might contain such elements in desirable proportions. EXPERIENCE has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorination-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave : Fe2O3, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO2, 0.75; ZnCO3, 4; Al2O3, 3.20; H2O, 0.7; SiO2 and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, .and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size-a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

Considered as a whole, the mineral resources of the Turkish Republic (Anatolia) are in their untapped virgin state, and the little development shown is not the result of modern systematic geologic exploration but the continuation of the ancient open-pit mining methods of the Orient. When I came to Turkey in 1924, I found myself confronted by a formidable task because of the lack of preliminary geologic mapping. Today this condition has not essentially changed; less than one per cent of the country is covered by topographic mapping adequate for modern requirements. However, I was able to bring a semblance of order in a presentation of the mineral deposits of this country, by tracing the story of the mineral deposits that showed surface evidence of their existence. At present only the easily discovered mineral deposits of coal, copper, and lead-silver ores are being exploited. In the case of coal, of 3,000,000,000 metric tons available, only 100,000,000 have been mined. The same is also true for copper, lead-silver, and other ores, as shown in Table 1.

PROGRESS in blast-furnace practice during 1922 has been in the direction pointed out in my article in the March, 1922, issue of MINING AND METAL-LURGY; this advance has been very satisfactory in spite of the difficulties caused by the great coal strike and the railroad strike. The progress, especially in increased tonnage, has been brought about, not by increasing the size of the furnaces, not by improved mechanical devices, but through the application of better blast-furnace practice; the advance has been metallurgical rather than mechanical. The increase in production per stack, has been more pronounced than in any period since the time that James Gayley began to break blast-furnace records in Pittsburgh. These big tonnages have been made in furnaces designed to make 550 to 600 tons of pig iron per day; but several such furnaces have had monthly averages of between 700 and 800 tons per day with a corresponding reduction of cost, and a reduction in the number of man-hours of labor per ton of pig iron. During this period there has been a wider acceptance of the fact that satisfactory blast-furnace results are more dependent on coke quality than on any other factor. There has always been much rivalry among blast-furnace men in making new tonnage records, and many schemes have been used for getting out big pro-duction, but the blast-furnace man cannot make the high records all by himself; it is necessary for him to have the cooperation of the entire management, and also the help of the organization that makes his blast-furnace coke. Herman Brassert has said that "there is no blast-furnace practice possible that can wholly overcome the effects of bad coke." In the past; the blast-furnace superintendent has often been under suspicion if he complained about the quality of the coke in times of unsatisfactory blast-furnace results, but it is now conceded that if the quality of the coke is not right, complaints are not necessarily made as an alibi.

During no similar period in the development of petroleum refining technology has so much progress been made in methods and equipment for the economical utilization of heat. Drastically severe commercial and economical conditions controlling the refining industry during 1927 gave a great impetus to improved efficiency and more economical operation in all departments. I think it is fair to say, however, that more progress has been made in the department of heat utilization than in other branches. I use the word utilization advisedly in the dual sense of better primary generation and application of heat and of saving by recovery methods. It was because of this trend that the subject, "Economical Application of Heat," was made the keynote of the refinery engineering sessions just completed. No new, outstanding elemental discoveries can be claimed for the year along this line. Some of the progress made has been in the development of better furnaces and distilling equipment embodying the more modern principles of boiler practice in obtaining complete combustion of the fuel, low excess air requirements and high transfer rates through the heating surface. Transfer rates of 3000 to 6000 B. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. were considered good some time ago in the older type of equipment. Today a transfer rate of 25,000 to 35,000 B. t. u. is an actual accomplishment in commercial installations and engineers are talking of the feasibility of 50,000, 75,000, even 100,000 R. t. u. per sq. ft. per hr. Contributing most to bringing this about have been the rational use of the velocity factor on both the oil and firing side of the heating surface, and the study and application of the principles of radiant heat in furnace design. Vapor Heat Economy The principle of heat exchange, especially against oil vapors, has been applied to a greater extent than ever before. The recovery of heat from oil vapors is not new. This was practiced 20 years ago or more in Europe,

DURING an investigation concerning the use of large nozzles for pouring of low-carbon rimming steels, the practical details of which were reported elsewhere, it was noticed that increases of nozzle sizes were generally followed by improvements of slab surface quality. It is the purpose of this note to present the data available and some tentative opinions about this phenomenon. The problem of correlating pouring rates with the metallurgical performance of steels is complicated by several factors. The two most important are; 1) Variations of the steel pouring rate throughout a pour, these being due to the nozzle erosion, which enlarges the bore area, and the dropping ferrostatic pressure in the ladle. The pouring rate is lowest towards the end of a heat when the ladle is nearly empty. 2) Variations in the ingot pouring time due to the different ingot weights poured. Consequently, the use of the average pouring rate of a heat may not be exact, but in large-scale production it is not practical to treat ingots separately according to their pouring rates. The variations of ingot weights and sizes may be overcome by considering the rate of rise of steel in the mold. Hence, the average rate of filling of molds throughout the pour of a heat, inches per second, will be used in this note. Every ingot rolled at Inland is rated at the blooming mills prior to hot machine scarfing as being good, fair, or poor for cracks, scabs, and checking. The latter term refers to the network of breaks or lines associated with overheating or burning in the soaking pits. It is also known that thin-skinned steel is prone to show this defect if the subsurface blowholes are exposed during reheating or rolling. The experiences with the surface quality of slabs rolled from ingots poured at different rates are presented in Fig. 1. The data represent nearly 11,000 ingots. THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). This paper describes a separation coefficient Ks useful as a "measure of goodness" to be used in factorial and response surface methodology. The use and limitations of the separation coefficient is discussed, and a computer program for calculating the coefficient is presented (in Fortran). The application of the coefficient is illustrated in terms of electro-dynamic separation of Mesabi semitaconites. Present Mesabi wash ores and gravity concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of only 5 or 6 to 1 are no longer readily salable, for the steel industry now demands concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of at least 10 to 1 and a structure comparable to pellets. THE ELECTRODYNAMIC-FLOTATION PROCESS Wash ores and gravity concentrates consist largely of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Several methods of beneficiation are being tested at the University of Minnesota Mines Experiment Station with a view to improving the salability of these materials. A process that looks particularly promising from an economic view is the combination electrodynamic-flotation process shown in Fig. 1. This process is designed to upgrade gravity concentrates to a 5% silica content and to provide fines — from the flotation circuit —to permit agglomeration. Although electrodynamic concentration of specularite is an established and well-understood process, the electrodynamic concentration of Mesabi goethite-hematite gravity concentrates presents interesting and enigmatic problems. The gravity concentrates are by no means assemblages of clean, free mineral particles. Instead, the concentrates to be retreated consist of a great variety of middlings. More or less complete liberation would require grinding to minus 325 mesh, at which size only flotation could be expected to function, and even then grades and especially recoveries would not be satisfactory. A close examination of the gravity concentrates shows that grinding to 100% minus 48 mesh will produce a product which is approximately 70 weight % plus 325 mesh (see Fig. 1). The remaining 30 weight % can be deslimed and floated by conventional methods, but the resulting iron concentrate is

During the past few years, the Mineral Point Zinc Co. has had under consideration the improvement of various types of gas-filtering apparatus used in the removal of dust from crushing and milling plants, in the manufacture of oxide, and on blast-furnace fume and sintering furnaces. The original equipment of the various plants of the company was, of course, along lines of the standard stationary bag house. These houses required large surfaces, hand shaking, and varied only in the manner of the collection of solids and in the distribution of the gas. , Early in 1908, the first trial of a mechanical bag house was made at Nassau Plant at Depue, Ill. The duty of this installation was on dust-laden gas from a fine-crushing mill. The Printz and Rau bag machine was finally adopted and put into operation. This ingenious machine embodied what were then to us two novel features in bag-house practice: 1. An intermittent crinkling and snapping of the filtering fabric to free the meshes of solids. 2. A reversal of gas flow for a short period by a temporary connection with the suction trunk. This equipment worked fairly well except in cold weather, when we ran into condensation troubles. Had we at that time understood more fully some of the limitations of fabric filtering work, these might well have been remedied. We were impressed by this experience, however, with the efficiency of sudden tension on the fabric under suction. After a study had been made of some of the western blast-furnace houses using the reversal-of-flow feature, experiments were started early in 3 914 with a view to developing an automatic equipment along the best lines of our past experience. The objects sought were: 1. Keeping labor out of the houses for hygienic reasons. 2. Reduction of labor costs. 3. Reduction in size of bag houses. 4. Accessibility. 5. Ability to handle relatively hot gases where required.

THE composition of steel and the theory of its heat treatment have been so ably discussed elsewhere that it is unnecessary to go into the subject here. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the method of treating drill steel at the Copper Range mines, giving some of the troubles encountered and the manner in which they were overcome or corrected. To study the matter properly, it was necessary to devise a system of records that would show the actual underground performance of the drills. To illustrate this system, the records of the Champion mine are used, as it is at this mine that most of the work along these lines has been done. Reports from each drill machine are made daily by the shop and mine, and tables compiled from these reports show the footage drilled, steel broken, drills received and sent out at the shop, drills sharpened, and bits cut off. These data show what each machine or party is doing and whether the miners' supply of drills is kept up to date. There have been times when the supply of drills has been short and time lost by the miner in looking for drills. The daily records show the number and condition of drills on hand at all times. Under the old method of sharpening, the drills were heated in a coke furnace, the proper degree of heat being judged by color. Then they were sharpened in a word drill-sharpening machine, reheated in a second coke furnace where the proper heat was again determined by color, and quenched in water. While this method was fairly successful in the hands of a careful workman and for the solid steel used in the old piston drill machine, the introduction of the faster water machine, using hollow steel, produced changes both underground and in the shop. Much more was expected of the hollow-steel and' hammer-type machine, with its improved method of rotation, but troubles due to breakage, burnt bits, uneven tempering, etc., at once began to appear.

THE motive for merging or consolidation today is conspicuously different from that actuating business men in the late eighties and early nine- ties. Then they combined to secure added productive capacity and to monopolize their respective industries with a view to exploiting the consumer. So flagrant were some of these cases that they brought about their own correctives via retaliation on the part of the public and the subsequent restrictive legislation and legal curbs. The objective of the present-day merger, writes W. R. Hill in Printers' Ink, December, 1927, is summarized as follows : "In the golden days when an industry was being cut to pieces, the prevailing cure was to combine. The reason for such trusts was to strangle competition and by creating a monopoly, dominate the market, raise prices, regardless of economic business methods, and simply force larger profits.
