In a series of papers the author and associates have discussed the influence of temperature on the tensile properties of metals.11-18 These papers present much information about the influence of temperature and the stress system on the conventional indices of mechanical properties, with special attention to the fracture stress. A recent study of the data, however, has revealed much additional information about the influence of temperature on the fundamental factors involved in the flow of metals. The present paper presents results of this study. Attention will be confined almost entirely to results derived from tension tests of unnotched cylindrical specimens at strain rates a little slower than those used in ordinary tension tests. According to a concept first presented by Ludwik and elaborated in recent papers by others,8,9,22,23 the mechanical state of a metal depends on the total plastic strain, but not on the temperature during straining, provided that the only structural changes are those essential to plastic deformation. In the summer of 1948, however, the author made the previously mentioned study of results of a general investigation by the author and associates and reached the conclusion that the mechanical state depends not only on the total strain, but also on the temperature during the straining. A number of diagrams were then prepared. These conclusions were presented without diagrams in a discussion last October of a paper by Dorn, Goldberg and Tietz.2 The metals used in the investigation on which this paper is based were Monel and oxygen-free copper. The Monel was supplied by the International Nickel Co. through the courtesy of Dr. W. A. Mudge. The copper was supplied by the Scomet Engineering Co. through the courtesy of Dr. Sidney Rolle. The data to be presented are based on results of tests at temperatures ranging between 165 and — 188°C. Description of the apparatus and methods of test are given in previous papers.1011'1"2 The present paper is the first part of the general discussion of the influence to temperature on the stress-strain-energy relationship for metals. The next paper will deal with metals that are subject to structural changes other than those induced solely by plastic deformation. Influence of Temperature and Plastic Strain on the Flow Stress of Monel and Copper For a study of the influence of temperature on the stress-strain relationship, flow-stress curves obtained with annealed metals at various temperatures will be compared with curves obtained with the same metals after cold drawing or cold rolling at room temperature. Diagrams thus obtained with Monel and copper are shown in Fig 1 to 8. Fig 1 to 7 show the variation of the flow stress with temperature and plastic strain; Fig 8 is a diagram of a different type, derived from Fig 4 to 7. In Fig 1 to 7 strain is expressed in terms of A0/A, in which A0, and A represent the initial and current areas of cross-section. Since values of Ao/A are represented on a logarithmic scale, abscissas are proportional to true strains; moreover, the true strains representing prior plastic deformation and those representing subsequent strain during a tension test are directly additive. Fig 1 shows flow-stress curves obtained with annealed Monel. Five of the curves are based on results of tension tests. Between yield and the maximum load, the flow was under longitudinal tensile stress; between the maximum load and fracture, the local contraction induced transverse radial tensile stress. The portions of curves designated F, therefore, represent flow with increasing radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Si. Curve Fo is based on the ultimate stresses of specimens taken from bars that had been cold drawn various amounts.17 Since the tensile stress at the maximum load is unidirectional, curve Fo represents the course that a flow-stress curve would take if the stress during an entire tension test could be kept unidirectional. The flow-stress curve F obtained at room temperature (Fig 1) has been established accurately by numerous measurements of the diameter of the specimen during the extension from yield to fracture.17 At the time of the experiments, however, no apparatus was available for measuring the diameter during tension tests at low temperatures. Nevertheless, curves have been established to represent with sufficient accuracy the flow at low temperatures. THE second session on geophysical prospecting at the February meeting of the Institute was a discussion of the mining law and the bearing of the new method of search on location of claims and assessment work thereon. Allen H. Rogers was chairman of the meeting, which he opened by reviewing the present law and the proposed changes. W. R. Ingalls commented (by letter) on the Arentz bill, as introduced into the House of Representatives in 1921 and the need for revision of the present mining law. L. W. Douglas explained (by letter) the bill that he introduced and which has been passed by the House. SAMUEL S. ARENTZ, Nevada: It is my opinion that if the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is to sell this proposition to the people in the West, they have to sell it to the lawyers, because, after all, they are heard loudly when it comes to speaking in Congress. One man tells the other, "This thing is a vicious piece of legislation"; it might not be, but they will pass it on if it affects them. If the Institute would impress on the people affected that we need a re-codification of the mining law and that such is necessary along certain lines; that things have changed during the past decade or two, so today instead of doing our prospecting alone through the sinking of a shaft, through a discovery that may be seen, we are now moving on to more modern means of discovery through geophysics, through the churn-drill, through geology, through geological inference, I think we could get somewhere.

This paper is the result of a research program entered into cooperatively by the General Reinsurance Corporation and Lehigh University in January 1944. The research program was instituted to find a more positive method to determine the presence of hazardous roof conditions in , mining operations. The co-authors, together with Mr. R. D. Currie, Engineer for the General Reinsurance Corporation, started working on the project in January 1944, first undertaking a library search; second, a preliminary study based on some existing equipment; third, the design of new and more suitable equipment; and finally, the field testing of equipment and methods. Purpose Any study of the accident statistics of mining operations will disclose the rather startling fact that approximately 50 to 60 per cent of all fatal underground accidents in the anthracite and bituminous mines are caused by falls of roof and coal, the metal and nonmetal mines showing only a slightly smaller percentage. Advancements in safety engineering have produced definite results in the decrease of accidents due to blasting, haulage, electricity, and explosions but no such decrease is shown in those caused by falls of roof, coal, or ore. The treatment of the residues from the manufacture of sulphuric acid which contain small amounts of copper, silver and gold, has attracted considerable attention in Europe. They are successfully treated in several works on the continent, and in as many as twenty establishments in different parts of England. As the process must sooner or later attract attention in this country, I have put together my notes made in three of the most important establishments in Europe. These are the works at Hemixem near Antwerp, of Duisbourg in Westphalia, and of Oker in the Hartz. In the last works only, the ores are produced in the vicinity of the place where they are treated. The works at Duisbourg treat ores which come from the Rio Tinto mines in Spain, which often contain considerable quantities of arsenic. They are roasted in a number of different works along the Rhine for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. They are brought by boat and are landed at the works by steam-cranes. They are carried at once by a double-inclined plane worked by steam to the storagehouses to be kept, until treated. The wagons, after being weighed, are dumped. The ore is assayed at once, the assay-sample being taken from the boat while the ores are being discharged. They are all fine, and contain two to eight per cent. of copper and about sixty per cent. of iron, and a small amount of silver and gold. Their average composition is given below:

The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

This relationship is sometimes established by examining the fracture surfaces and the flat surfaces near the fracture path in tensile samples. In terms of present metal prices, analysis of extant records of the Eureka district indicate past production of the magnitude of $200,000,000 in recovered silver, lead, and gold. Production to date has been thoroughly oxidized ore from massive replacements, fissures, manta, and pipe-like bodies-in large part from the massive Eldorado (middle Cambrian) and Hamburg (middle to late Cambrian) dolomite horizons. In the productive area of about 6 square miles carbonate rocks comprise 80 per cent of the section, which includes early Cambrian to late Ordovician horizons. Four-fifths or more of the district's production came from a block of Eldorado dolomite in Ruby Hill that was moved in over younger horizons on strands of a regional thrust fault. The lower 500 to 600 feet of the block was much fractured and brecciated and became host to the ores. The Ruby Hill fault, a late normal fault, limits the Ruby Hill block of dolomite on the north for its entire length of nearly a mile and terminates the downward extent and exploitation of its ores. It introduced an hiatus of some 40 years in the district's development. Drilling of the past 20-odd years, followed by underground work, has now exposed the down-faulted extension of the Ruby Hill block of Eldorado dolomite and its contained ores, dropped 1800 feet in a dip shift to depths beneath the surface of 2000 to 3000 feet. The ores at depth are the sulfide counterpart of those mined in early years on the footwall side of the fault. The ores of the district may be attributed to the same source as the intrusive quartz diorite outcropping in a limited way south of Ruby Hill but found at depth elsewhere in drill holes. The long north-south axis of the district, its anticlinal structure, its major faults, and the distribution of the intrusives and, in their relation to the surface, the ores themselves, all suggest that erosion has not cut deep enough to expose the extent of intrusives and the ores consequent upon them.

The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition
