Reservoir and producing characteristics can govern the decision to use either a one-, two- or three-dimensional model for making predictions for gravity-drainage reservoirs. Examples of conditions requiring one-, two- and three-dimensional calculations are given. In 1961 the author presented a method for predicting one-dimensional gravity-drainage performance. This work has been exrendcd to obtain a three-dimensional model, which is described and for which a sample problem is presented. Introduction Many papers on gravity drainage or gas-cap drive'-3 have been presented for conditions where the reservoir is treated as a single areal segment so that, in effect, only one-dimen-sional flow is considered. Other authors'-Q ave given evidence showing that the one-dimensional concept would be unsatisfactory to predict reservoir performance for certain types of reservoirs. Experience has indicated that specific reservoir and producing conditions govern whether one-, two- or three-dimensional concepts must be used as a basis for reliable reservoir performance predictioils. Previously the author presented a paper outlining a method for predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs.' That paper treated the reservoir as a single areal segment so that it was applicable for only one-dimensional flow. The work has been extended to obtain a three-dimensional model that can be used to predict performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs. Although capable of being three-dimensional, it can be used equally well for one- and two-dimensional predictions. This paper discusses those reservoir and producing conditions governing the choice of model, and also describes a three-dimensional model suitable for predicting reservoir performance in the more complex situations. Discussion The Choice of Model To predict reservoir performance, it is necessary to represent the reservoir by a physical model. A mathematical model, based on the assumed physical model, then is used to predict the movement of oil and gas within the reservoir. The word "model" is used here to connote the combination of both a physical model and a mathematical model based on the physical model. Certain types of reservoir situations may be predicted suitably with a one-dimensional model, whereas two- and three-dimensional models may be required for other situations. This section illustrates reservoir conditions associated with the use of a specific type of model. Many types of reservoir structures are such that gravity drainage possibly could be an important factor in oil production. Production practices, as well as the nature of the structure. can influence the type of model that should be used. obviously, it is impossible to discuss all combinations of reservoir structure and production practices that might be encountered in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The following are typical examples of conditions where a choice must be made among a one-, two- or three-dimensional model to predict reservoir performance satisfactorily. Conditions Requiring a One-Dimensional Model Fig. la shows contours for an asymmetrical anticline in which gravity drainage might be expected to be important. Fig. Ib depicts a cross-section along Line A-A in Fig. la. Existence of a gas cap is a good clue that gravity drainage will be an important factor in producing oil from this type of reservoir. However, it is not essential since a gas cap will form as oil is produced from the reservoir. As is generally understood, the word geophysics means literally ?the physics of the Earth? and the science of geophysics is therefore that which treats of the study and measurements of the various physical properties of the Earth. The broad and general study of the elastic, the gravimetric. or the magnetic properties of the Earth as a whole belongs to the general science of geophysics. The detailed application of this science to rocks of shallow depth and in small areas for the purposes of ascertaining data on their character and structural attitude gave rise to the present well-known science of ?applied geophysics.? Since the discovery of enormous new quantities of oil, gas, and sulphur has been by far and wide the principal benefaction of geo-physics in the United States, this paper will refer only to geophysical methods employed in the search for these particular minerals. The application of methods and appliances originally used for geophysical research to the solution of the practical problems of finding new oil-fields, plus the counterflow or new and highly refined techniques and Instruments from the company and consulting geophysical research laboratories and into non-economic geophysical research, has provided another case of that gen-eral cycle of events which is familiar to all scientists. That this closed-circuit flow or scientific current has been tremendously important to the whole science of geophysics is probably well known to all members of this audience, but the gen-eral status of the exploratory geophysical arts as now used In the search for new oil-fields, the scales on which different methods are being used, the magnitude of the costs involved, and the far greater magnitude of the practical results achieved may not necessarily have come so directly to your attention. It is, I understand, for this reason that this paper has been sug-gested, and I shall seek to provide the information requested by using as case-illustrations those changes in the oil-reserve picture for the United States as a whole, and for the Gulf Coast, California, and Illinois Basin regions in particular, which have occurred in the period of the past 17 years, during which time oil-field discoveries have proceeded at a rate which served to build up known and readily-available (or proven) oil supplies to a reasonable figure, and have dispelled the fears of a serious oil shortage during any period for which valid fore-casts can be made. Not that geophysical-prospecting methods have alone been responsible for this transformation, but they have an indispensable and leading part in the picture of exploration and production-to which geophysics, geology, engineering, and general technical progress have jointly made contribution. So far as the United States as a whole is concerned, its total proven, probable, and possible oil reserves (discoverable and recoverable by then-known methods) were estimated at about nine billion barrels in 1920, whereas proven reserves alone are now com-puted at about 16 billion. In 1920 the driller in ?wild-cat? territory was faced with the knowledge that for every new oil-field opened by a successful well, from 20 to 100 unsuccessful wells would have to be drilled and, in some territories, that the chances for a discovery were really less than one in 100 for new drilling, in contrast to which may be cited the record for the past year in parts of Louisiana where the 67 wells drilled opened 16 new oil-fields, that is to say, where the score of hits to misses was increased to approximately one out of four.

NATURAL abrasives of some type are found in all countries of the world. In order of their hardness the principal natural abrasives are diamond, corundum, emery, and garnet, which are termed high grade, and the various forms of silica, including pumice, pumicite, ground feldspar, china clay and, most important, sandstone. The properties qualifying materials for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness, grain shape and size, character of fracture, and purity or uniformity. For manufacture of bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, the stability of the abrasive and its bonding characteristics are also important. No single property is paramount for all uses. Extreme hardness and toughness are needed for some applications, as in diamonds for drill bits, while for other purposes the capacity of the abrasive to break down slowly under use and to develop fresh cutting edges is of greatest importance, as with garnet for sandpaper. In dentifrices, soaps, and metal polishes, of course, hardness and toughness are objectionable. First among the natural abrasives, industrial diamonds are essentially of three types: l—bort, which includes off-color, flawed, or broken fragments unsuitable for gems; 2—carbonado, or black diamond, a very hard and extremely tough aggregate of very small diamond crystals; and 3—ballas, a very hard, tough globular mass of diamond crystals radiating from a common center. Bort comes from all diamond-producing centers, carbonados only from Brazil, and ballas chiefly from Brazil, although a few of this last group come from South Africa. By far the largest producer of industrial diamonds is the Belgian Congo; the Gold Coast, Angola, the Union of South Africa, and Sierra Leone supply most of the remainder. There is no production in Canada, which imports $6 to $9 million worth of industrial diamonds annually. Industrial diamonds find innumerable uses in modern industry. They are used for diamond drill bits for the mining industry; in diamond dies for wire drawing; in diamond-tipped tools for truing abrasive wheels and for turning and boring hard rubber, fibers, and plastics; and in diamond-toothed saws for sawing stone, glass, and metals. High-speed tool steels, cemented carbides, and other hard, dense alloys can be cut, sharpened, or shaped efficiently only with diamond-tipped tools and diamond grinding wheels. .. Second only to the diamond in hardness is corundum, an impure form of the ruby and sapphire gems consisting of alumina and oxygen (Al²O³) with impurities such as silica and ferric oxide. Corundum generally crystallizes from magmas rich in alumina and deficient in silica, as in the nepheline syenites of eastern Ontario. Grain corundum is used in the manufacture of grinding wheels; very coarse grain is used in snagging wheels. Both types of wheels are employed in the metal trades, where the hardness of corundum, coupled with its characteristic fracturing into sharp cutting edges, makes it an ideal cutting tool. The finest corundum (flour grades) is used for fine grinding of glass and high-precision lenses. From 1900 to 1921 Canada was the world's leading producer of corundum. Following this period the deposits located in northern Transvaal of the Union of South Africa supplied more and more of the world's requirements, and since 1940 South Africa has provided almost the entire output, which has ranged between 2500 to 7000 tons a year during the last decade. Minor amounts have also been produced in Mozambique, India, and Nyassaland. Opportunities for Mining Corundum Corundum deposits in southeastern Ontario are of three types, which may be described as follows: 1—Scattered, irregularly-shaped deposits of coarse-grained corundum which could be mined by means of small pits. About 10 groups of such deposits are known. Although the tonnage of individual deposits of this type is not great, it has been estimated that several years' ore supply is available for a small tonnage operation. Deposits average about 9 pct corundum. 2—Large irregular deposits of coarse-grained corundum which would require mining by adit with possibly a scavenger operation on the remains of former surface deposits. The Craigmont deposit of this type produced about 20,000 tons of corundum concentrate during operations between 1900 and 1913. Most of the readily available surface ore was removed by operators during that time. Reserves of ore above road level have been estimated to average 7 pct corundum, but none of the so-called reserves have been blocked out, or even indicated, by diamond drilling. A new mechanism of crystal growth involving oapor, liquid, crnd solid phases explains many observations of the effect of implurities in crystal growth from the vapor. The role of the impuuitq is to form a liquid Solution with the crystalline tnalerial to be grown from the vapor. Since the solution is n prefevred site for deposition firorti the uapor, the liquid becorrles supersaturated. Crystal growth occurs by precipitatzon from the supersaturated liquid crt tlie solid-liquid zntevfnce. A crystalline defect, such as a screw dislocation, is not essetztial for VLS (vapor -liquid-solid) growth. The concept of the VLS mechanism is discussed in detail with reference to tire controlled growth of silicon crystals using gold, platinum, palladium, nickel, silver, or copper as an implurity agent. RECENTLY a short communication' described a new concept of crystal growth from the vapor, the VLS mechanism. In this paper we present a detailed description of the process and its application to the growth of silicon crystals and we discuss its relevance to existing concepts of .'whisker" crystal growth. Crystal growth from the vapor is usually explained by a theory proposed by Frank2 and developed in detail by Burton, Cabrera, and Frank.3 In this theory a screw dislocation terminating at the growth surface provides a self-perpetuating step. Accommodation of atoms at the step is energetically favorable, and is possible of much lower supersatu-ration than required for two-dimensional nucleation. Crystals of a unique form resulting from aniso-tropic growth from the vapor are "whisker" or filamentary ones. Such crystals have a lengthwise dimension orders of magnitude larger than those of the cross section. For most filamentary crystals both the fast-growth direction and directions of lateral growth have small Miller indices. The special growth form for a whisker crystal implies that the tip surface of the crystal must be a preferred growth site. sears4 proposed that, according to the Frank theory. a whisker contains a screw dislocation emergent at the growing tip. Such an axial defect provides a preferred growth site and accounts for unidirectional growth. The hypothesis was extended by Price. Vermilyea. and Webb," still implying the presence of a dislocation at the whisker tip. They postulated that impurities arriving at the fast-growing tip face become buried while those arriving on the surface of slow-growing lateral faces accumulate and thereby hinder growth. These considerations led to a whisker morphology. There is increasing evidence that most whisker crystals grown from the vapor are dislocation-free. Webb and his coworkers6 searched for an Eshelby twist7 in zinc? cadmium, iron. copper, silver, and palladium whisker crystals. They found unequivocal evidence for an axial screw dislocation in only one element, palladium. However, not every palladium crystal examined contained a dislocation. Observations with the electron microscope have failed to show dislocations in whisker crystals of zinc, silicon.9 and one morphology of AlN.10 Since many whiskers are completely free of dislocations, an axial dislocation does not appear to be required for whisker growth of many substances. A significant advance in understanding whisker growth has been a recognition of the need for impurities. This requirement has been clearly demonstrated for copper,11 iron,13 and silicon9-1 whiskers. For silicon, detailed studies proved conclusively that certain impurities, for example, nickel or gold, are essential. Another pertinent phenomenon which has received little attention is the presence of a liquid layer or droplets on the surface of some crystals growing from the vapor. Crystals in which this has been observed include p-toluidine,14 MoO3,15 ferrites,16 and silicon carbide.'" The liquid layers or globules were considered to be metastable phases, molecular complexes, or intermediate polymers originating from condensation of the vapor phase. The possibility has been suggested that the halide being reduced is condensed at the tip18 or adsorbed on the surface11 of a growing metal whisker, for example copper. The literature on whiskers discloses illustrations of rounded terminations at the tips. These appear. for example, on crystals of A12O3,19,20 sic,21 and BeO.22 For BeO, Edwards and Happel suggested that during growth of the whisker the rounded termination consisted of molten beryllium enclosed in a solid shell of BeO. A recent paper9 on the growth of silicon whiskers contains many observations pertinent to an understanding of the mechanisnl of whisker growth. These observations are summarized as follows. 1) Silicon whiskers are dislocation-free. 2) Certain impurities are essential for whisker growth. Without such impurities the silicon deposit is in the form of a film or consists of discrete polyhedral crystals.

The solid solubilities for thirteen rare-earth metals in gold were determined by using the X-ray parametric method. Solubilities ranged from 0.1 at. pct for lanthanum in gold up to 8.8 at. pct for scandium in gold. The solubilities from lanthanum to gadolinium were very small and essentially constant, but a sharp increase occurred from gadolinium to scandium. The large solubilities for the heavy rare-earth metals were not expected because of the large size and electrochemical differences between rare-earth atoms and the gold atom. Contributions from first- and second-order elasticity theory plus an electronic contribution were found to reasonably account for a more favorable size factor. Electron transfer from the rare-earth metal to the gold Is thought to occur such that the resultant rare-earth and gold electronegativities are favorable for solid-solution formation. It was also found that this mutual adjustment of size and electronegutivity does not occur if the pure-metal size factors are greater than a critical value of 25 pet. The eutectic temperatures for ten systems were determined and these remained fairly constant at approximately 809 "C for the lighter lanthanide metal-gold systems until the Er-Au system was reached, at which Point the eutectic temperature successively increased reaching a maximum of 1040°C in the Sc-Au system. This rise was correlated to the size factor becoming more favorable for solid-solution formation at erbium. The valence state of ytterbium was found to change from two in the pure metal to three when ytterbium is dissolved in the gold matrix. RECENT results1 reported concerning the solubility of holmium in copper, silver, and gold, showed that the solubility of holmium in gold was quite large, 4.0 at. pct, compared with 1.6 in silver and 0.02 in copper. The small solubilities of holmium in silver and copper are quite reasonable in view of the large size difference (22.2 and 38.2 pct, respectively), large electronegativity difference (0.59 for both systems), and possible unfavorable valency factor (assuming one for silver and copper and three for holmium). The large solubility in gold, however, is unexpected because these same factors are also unfavorable for holmium and gold (22.5 pct size difference and 0.69 electronegativity difference), and because the light rare-earth metals, lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium, have negligible solid solubilities in gold.2 In view of this unexpected behavior, it was felt that a study of the solid solubilities of most of the rare-earth metals in gold would be desirable to better understand the factors involved in the formation of solid solutions. Of the rare-earth metals added to gold in this study, only ytterbium is divalent in the pure metallic state (the other rare-earth metals are all trivalent) and many of its physical properties (such as the metallic radius, electronegativity, and so forth) are much different from those of the normal trivalent rare-earth metals.' The properties of ytterbium are such that one would expect solid-solution formation to be less favorable for ytterbium in gold than for any of the normal trivalent rare-earth metals. But chemically ytterbium is known to possess a stable trivalent state, and it is quite possible that ytterbium may alloy as a trivalent metal under certain conditions rather than as a divalent metal. Because of the dual valency nature and because so little is known about the alloying behavior of ytterbium, the gold-rich ytterbium-gold alloys are of special interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The gold used in this investigation had a purity of 99.99 pct with respect to nongaseous impurities. In general the rare-earth metals were prepared by reduction of the corresponding fluoride by calcium metal.3 The impurity contents of the metals used in this study are given in Table I. Preparation of Alloys. Two- or 3-g alloy samples were prepared by arc melting. The samples, with the exception of some of the Er-Au alloys, had weight losses of 0.5 pct or less. All alloy concentrations noted in this paper are nominal compositions. After arc melting, the alloys were wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed off in quartz tubing under a partial atmosphere of argon, homogenized for approximately 200 hr at 780°C, and then quenched in cold water. X-Ray Methods. The X-ray parametric method was used in determining the solubility of the rare-earth metals in gold. filings were sealed in small tantalum tubes by welding under a helium atmosphere. The tantalum tubes were then sealed in quartz tubing under a partial argon atmosphere, and annealed for times ranging from 1/2 to 3 hr (the length of time was inversely proportional to the an-

DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

Senator Smoot recently introduced his bill providing for the leasing of oil and coal lands. This bill provides only for the leasing of these lands from the Government and advocates government ownership of all government coal and oil lands. Under the provision of the bill as now proposed, 50 per cent. of all money received under the measure is to be paid to the state in which the land is located. The money must be used, however, for the construction and maintenance of roads and for schools. The last leasing bill was defeated when it was about to become law largely because of the fact that it allowed the sale of coal lands.

ThE interpretation of X-ray and electron diffraction data obtained in plastic deformation studies of hcp a titanium requires knowledge of angular relationships between crystallographic planes and directions. Rarey el 01.' have calculated both interplanar angles and angles between directions for a number of c/a ratios. This information, although useful for approximate applications, does not provide exact data for specific hcp metals. Recently, Hu2 has tabulated interplanar angles specifically for hcp titanium. The present study augments the existing data on titanium by providing the angles between plane normals and rational crystallographic directions in addition to interplanar and interdirectional angles. ENGINEERING has been taught at the University of Alabama for over a hundred years. The School of Mining and Metallurgy was authorized by the Board of Trustees in 1887 and four students were graduated in 1888. In 1919 the legislature directed that all mineral industry instruction in the state should be centralized at the University and designated the department of mining of the College of Engineering as the Alabama School of Mines and made financial provisions for carrying on both instructional and research work for the benefit of the mining industry of the state and for cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, which had established its Southern Experiment Station on the campus.

CHARLES E. WILSON'S second quarterly report "Meeting Defense Goals" was encouraging on the outlook for the mining industry, as prolonged demand for minerals seems assured; but for the individual engineer things are not so rosy. Ten percent of the gross national product is going for defense but the gross national product has been increased by 9 pct since the national emergency was declared apparently a commendable rate of progress. The increased production does not seem to have had the stabilizing effect on prices it should and housewives have been revising domestic budgets upward on a quarterly basis. Government economists have reached the conclusion that more taxes and wage and salary freezing are necessary to counteract inflation.

The idea of parameterizing reserves has only been formalized and scientifically applied for a few years. Its most fully developed application, that of open pits, has been operational only since 1976. Two new versions which have just been issued provide a complete solution to the problem and also a powerful tool for mine planning, and they open up a new field of investigation. This paper describes the basic principles for parameterizing reserves, their application for open-pit mines, the algorithm used, the physical interpretation of the results obtained, their economic use as well as the first prospects offered by a complete parameterization in tm of (I. ti), or of the metal price.

NOTCH properties of titanium materials have been extensively investigated in the impact test.'-" For the most part the impact strength meas- ured suggests a ductile-brittle transition that lies at relatively high temperatures, thus indicating a possible notch sensitive condition at ambient temperatures. Recently it has been shown' that the impact strength for unalloyed titanium, as for aluminum alloys, may be a nonsensitive index of notch sensitivity as provided by the notch strength as measured in the notch tensile test. The notch strength for unalloyed titanium was found to depend on the nitrogen and carbon contamination levels. SAN FRANCISCO Mines of Mexico, Ltd. owns and operates an extensive group of claims in the San Francisco del Oro-Santa Barbara district, about 15 miles southwest of Parral, Chihuahua. The property comprises the mines, aerial tramways, flotation mill, power plant, shops, offices, assay and testing laboratories, modern hospital, water and sanitary system, quarters for miners, mechanics and operators, a well housed colony for Mexican staff employees and residences for foreigners. Each colony has a club house and mess and tennis courts. The employees have constructed a nine-hole golf course. In other words, the property is self-contained and completely integrated for production of lead and zinc concentrates from complex sulfide ores.

Size distribution and surface area measurements play an important role in the characterization of crushed and ground granular materials properties. This paper outlines sampling methods of granular materials followed by a detailed treatment of principles of size and surface area measurements of a wide range of sizes from crushers feed to ball-mill ground sub-micron particles. Currently available equipment for size distribution and surface area analysis is described and critically examined with respect to advantages, range of application and precautions in their use. Equipment for on- stream size analysis is also evaluated. Finally, a list of criteria are given for selection of particles size and surface area measuring devices for a particular application.

AIR has been cooled, heated, washed; humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls.
