Interest in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.l At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,² some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,³ of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,* of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. The commercially exploited sedimentary apatites exhibit a number of variable lattice substitutions which affect their chemical composition. Carbonate is a major diluent of phosphorus values in sedimentary apatites. Substantial amounts of water as hydroxyl, hydronium, and tetrahedral hydroxyl ions substitute for fluorine and oxygen, calcium, and phosphate, respectively. Calcium is also replaced by several other divalent and monovalent cations. The structural formula demonstrates the substitutions in the lattice of the sedimentary apatites studied in view of the crystal-chemical relationships which have been postulated for the isomorphous apatite series. The lattice constant a. varies from 9.29 to 9.40 A for the apatites studied. Quantitative relationships between this constant and lattice substitution are complicated by the interaction of multiple substitutions whose influence is non-additive. The mineral apatite, the principal raw material source of phosphorus for agricultural and industrial applications, offers a wide area for investigation. Considerable research effort has been expended in the study of apatite crystal-chemistry by medical, biological, and earth scientists. Few of these studies deal directly with the sedimentary apatites from the major occurrences which are widely exploited for commercial uses. It is the purpose here to present chemical analyses of several sedimentary apatites and discuss their chemical composition in relation to the structural and crystalchemical principles which have been postulated for the apatite isomorphous series. THE STRUCTURE OF FLUORAPATITE The atomic structure of fluorapatite was described, independently, by Ngray-Szabd and Mehmel in 1930 and has been accepted as presented, with only minor changes,4 since that time. The hexaogonal unit cell with dimensions of a = 9.37 0.01 A and c = 6.88 0.01 A contains two molecules of the composition "There are six (PO4) groups in the cell, four calcium ions on the trigonal axes, surrounded prismati-cally by six oxygen ions and six calcium ions surrounded by an irregular polyhedron of a fluorine and five oxygens. Fluorines are at the comers of the reflexion planes, touching three calcium ions each".l7

More than a decade ago some theoretically derived relationships were proposed that permitted the prediction of the relative ability of reservoir fluids (oil, gas, water) to flow simultaneously within the porous structure of rocks. While many successful predictions of fluid-flow ratios from wells have been made from electric logs, the theoretical deductions have not been subjected to laboratory verifications. For the relative permeability to liquid and gas, simultaneous flow of water and air was used, employing the familiar external-gas-drive technique. While in the process or water desaturation, the resistivities of the test cores (Woodbine sand) were measured. Their permeabilities varied from 10 to 280 md. The laboratory results indicated the need for changing the values of exponents in the theoretically derived formulas, whereas the form of the functions of resistivities and saturations remained as derived by theory. For the relative permeability to oil and water, the three-core dynamic technique was used on six cores. In this case it was found that the formulas were valid with but slight modification as derived by theory, to a sufficient degree of accuracy for engineering use and for well productivity prediction from electric logs. INTRODUCTION Conventional quantitative well log interpretation generally stops after reasonable values for formation porosities and water saturations have been established. Yet such in formation is insufficient to predict either the outcome or the desirability of well tests and completion, let alone the economic aspect of producing oil- and gas-bearing sections which might have been established by conventional log analysis. To give an engineering answer to such questions, it is necessary to predict the expected fluid flow ratios, the productivity index and the ultimate recovery from potentially productive wells. This problem requires in part for its solution a determination of the relative permeability characteristics of the potentially producing formations, both to oil (or water) and gas, and to oil and water.

IN THE southwestern Wisconsin zinc district, lying in Lafayette, Grant, and Iowa Counties, and the adjoining territory in northwestern Illinois, the orebodies are generally small, and are mined out in a few years. Many of the mines are developed with an expectation of five years or less of actual production. For this reason, as well as for considerations of economy, certain features in the development practice, which have been worked out with a view toward keeping the ratio of time required for, development to that occupied by actual production as small as possible, are of interest. ORGANIZATION The organization of a crew for, this work is as follows: Inasmuch as speed in sinking is desirable, the shaft crew comprises three shifts working 8 hr. each. In the smaller shafts, running up to 6 by 12 ft. (1.8 by 3.6 in.) in size, two men are employed on a shift; in larger shafts an additional man is usually employed. A mine foreman, or ground boss, has general control of the work of the three shifts. He is usually with the crew on the first and the early part of the second shifts, and plans the work to be done for the third shift when it comes on. His schedule, of course, is flexible and when pump changes, or other special conditions warrant, he, arranges his working time to suit the occasion. The surface crew for a sinking operation is made up of two hoistermen, each working 12-hr. shifts. Since the various operations in the shaft must be conducted in succession,. and not in combination, one with the other, separate attendance for hoisting and general plant is unnecessary. Drilling is done when no hoisting is necessary and vice versa. The hoisterman trams out and dumps the excavated material which the crew in the shaft is mucking, as a part of his regular hoisting work.

LARGE quantities of fine anthracite with associated impurities are discharged with the waste water from the coal-cleaning plants in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. Furthermore, for many years this fine material has accumulated and formed silt banks. The difficulty of removing the impurities from the fine material and the lack of adequate markets are responsible for the waste of this material. In view of a larger demand for fine coal, mainly for pulverized fuel, the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. decided to investigate the froth flotation process for recovery of fine coal from these waste solids. A test plant was constructed and operated for six months during 1942 in order to determine the practicability of recovering coal from the waste water of a cleaning plant (breaker) by froth flotation, and to obtain operating data for designing a commercial plant if the results were favorable. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Before the pilot plant was constructed information was obtained by field and small-scale laboratory tests to serve as a guide in the design and operation of the pilot plant. Size and ash analyses of a representative sample of the material discharged in the wash water from a cleaning plant are given in Table I. [ ] The refuse content increases progressively as the size of the particles decreases. The larger particles (+35 m.) are low in ash content and could be marketed without cleaning. Since these solids are discharged from the breakers with 90 to 95 per cent water by weight, the first step in the recovery of the coal was that of reducing the quantity of water so that water in excess will not have to be handled. Furthermore, it was found that the removal of most of the minus 200 mesh high-ash material was desirable to permit the most efficient flotation of the coal. Classification tests were run and showed that a hydroseparator overflow rate of 12 ft. per hour was sufficient to eliminate much of the minus 200-mesh material while allowing the coarser material to settle and be thickened.

The Convertol process was first described in Germany by Muschenborn' in 1952. In the U. S. Fraser' reported this new process in 1953, and Brisse and McMorris" presented the results of a Convertol pilot plant at the Alpheus preparation plant in Gary, W. Va., illustrating the mechanics of the process by a series of sketches. The purpose of the present investigation was threefold: 1) to determine the relative effectiveness of various oils and hydrocarbons for recovering coal by the Convertol process, 2) to ascertain the behavior of coal pulps in this process under various operational conditions, and 3) to compare Convertol with flotation in the recovery of fine coals. APPARATUS, PROCEDURE, AND COAL SAMPLES In laboratory work with the Convertol process a Waring Blender equipped with a speed-regulating rheostat was used for wetting, conditioning, inversion, and retention of the coal pulp. A 5-in. International centrifuge was adapted to dewater the agglomerated clean coal product by installation of a 100-mesh screen inside the regular bronze basket of the centrifuge. Except where otherwise stated, the Convertol testing was performed by the following steps: 1) A 450 to 500-cc coal slurry, containing 24 pct by weight of solids, was agitated in the blender for 10 min at 100 rpm to insure complete wetting and mixing. 2) Eight percent by weight of oil was added to the coal slurry in the blender and agitated for 1 min at 11,000 rpm to result in the phase inversion or agglomeration of oil-coated coal particles. 3) The agglomerated coal slurry was poured onto a 100-mesh sieve and wet-screened for about 2 min to remove most of the ash and some of the water. 4) The material remaining on the screen was transferred into the centrifuge for final dewatering. 5) A portion of the clean coal was immediately weighed out for moisture determination, while the

Theoretical calculations for the decline of pressure and the variation of instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio with increased cumulative production have been made for reservoir systems under various producing drawdown values and for various spacings. These variables have been included by a modification of previously Published techniques. This consists essentially of utilizing a radial system flowing gas and oil in a succession of steady state calculations. The results of the calculations do not show any variation in the predicted behavior of the internal gas drive reservoir when either the drawdown or the spacing are changed. The prediction of performance on an internal gas drive reservoir has been presented by various authors. ',"' These predictions are in the form of a pressure decline and an instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio as a function of cumulative oil withdrawal. In making these predictions a basic assumption has been that the saturation of the reservoir is uniform throughout at any time, or that the pressure differential imposed on the reservoir system is zero. Because of these assumptions the validity of such predictions has been questioned. Their application to actual systems, where saturations are not uniform and where producing differentials exist, has been a hazardous procedure. The authors cited have used different methods of approach to the derivation of equations for making their predictions and for arriving at a solution of both equations, but basically the same relationships are utilized in each case. In all instances the instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio is calculated from the equation: In utilizing this equation an average reservoir pressure and an average reservoir saturation must be known, the former to define ß, v, s, and uo/ug and the latter to define kg/ko. Predictions can be made, therefore, only for the conditions of a uniform reservoir saturation and a uniform reservoir pressure. This restriction of requiring a uniform oil saturation can be resolved by applying two-phase steady state flow for the radial system to the reservoir's history. The testing of flotation oils has occupied a large part of the time of the testing departments of various companies using the flotation process in the beneficiation of their ores. The great differences in ores and in oils has made such work necessary, as it has not been possible to select the oil best suited for the purpose without trial of many kinds. In fact, individual shipments of flotation oils from the same manufacturer will often differ so radically that the mill men have been forced to test every lot of flotation oil before its use in the mills. Further, although almost every imaginable product of the distillation of wood, from alcohol to pitch, has been tested in a more or less perfunctory manner by various people, few companies have allowed the results of their tests to be made public. This work was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining reliable data regarding the value as flotation agents of a number of products that are obtained from the distillation of wood by different methods, and incidentally to determine whether some of the products not used at present could be used. Large quantities of such materials are being masted or burned in the wood-distillation plants of the United States, and if some use other than fuel could be found for these materials, such a use would represent a distinct saving to the country as a whole, would increase the profit of wood-distilling plants now operating and perhaps make it possible for others to operate which at present cannot do so except at a loss. At the same time it was thought that if such products can be used as flotation agents, then their use would serve to increase the number of oils and other products available for flotation purposes. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this section is to introduce the reader to the concepts of computer control of grinding circuits, and to flag some of the opportunities to be encountered, but without becoming overly involved in details of process, equipment or software. It is assumed that the reader has some familiarity with computer hardware and software, and in particular with the grinding process. The paper is organized into four parts: a general commentary of the need for computer control of grinding, a discussion of the process considerations involved, a more detailed elaboration on the current state of applicable computer technology, and a case study indicating one approach towards such a project. A brief installation survey and references for further reading are also given. This section will primarily deal with supervisory computer applications. Direct Digital Control and microprocessor systems are generally used as replacements for analog controls and thus are not considered in depth. Many configurations of grinding circuits exist, necessitating certain assumptions. Since many new concentrators use an open circuited SAG mill feeding a closed circuit ball mill, this configuration is used as a model although the principles stated can be extrapolated to any circuit. Motivation The use of computers for industrial control has been one of the dreams of control engineers and operators alike for many years. The concept of a plant running at optimal conditions with minimal operator involvement is very attractive from economic and technical standpoints. Accomplishment of this goal has been a long struggle, but today likelihood of success of such a project is very high, considering the reliability of modern hardware and the sophistication of available software. The primary motivation of any control system must be economic, i.e. it must pay for itself and make money for the owner, directly or indirectly. In grinding control the benefits which can be expected include: a) Higher through-put b) More uniform product in particle size, density and volumetric flog: c) Reduced operating costs including media consumption, power consumption and liner wear

For several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some interesting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivities for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been published1,2 † except for the electrical conductivity at 200" C., which is given in the appendix of this paper. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Copper Alloys The papers referred to above contained a summary of the figures available in 1929 for the thermal conductivity of copper alloys. There is given in Table 1 herewith a selection of the data that have appeared since that time. The measurements of Hanson and Rogers3 are particularly interesting since they cover a series of alloys in the alpha solid solution range and show the effect of heat-treatment. Their alloys were tested as annealed castings, and are not therefore directly comparable to the worked alloys measured in the present investigation, although the difference is small. Bailey's determinations4 were carried out on the alloys used by Lees6 in 1906, and extend his results to higher temperatures. It is most unfortunate that the alloys were not analyzed, for the approximate compositions given are hardly sufficient identification of the material. It is equally to be regretted that neither Hanson and Rogers nor Bailey give data for the electrical conductivities of their samples. Sager6, using the heat-wave method of King, determined the thermal conductivity of copper, nickel and four alloys of the two metals. His results are included in Table 1.

INspite of considerable interest in the kinetics of ordering of the alloy Cu3Au there is no direct information available on the activation energy for atom movements in this alloy, such as that obtainable by radioactive tracer-diffusion studies or by internal friction measurements. Accordingly, this alloy was examined to find out whether it displays an internal friction peak resulting from stress-induced ordering, similar to that studied extensively in other alloy systems.1-3 Measurements of the internal friction as a function of temperature were made in a torsion pendulum similar to that described by Ké.8 Wire specimens 0.032 in. diam and 11 in. long were used. The wire, obtained in the cold-drawn condition,* was annealed at 900C in a quartz tube to obtain a large grained sample, and then mounted in the torsion pendulum furnace. Internal friction is reported here as the lag angle, 4, which is equal to the logarithmic decrement divided by .ir. Fig. 1 shows the internal friction at three frequencies (the frequency given for each curve is the value measured at the peak). The data for these curves were obtained on cooling one specimen from 460C to just above the critical temperature for long-range ordering, which is about 390C for this alloy. In this way, the internal friction is measured under conditions where the alloy is in the disordered condition throughout the run. The curves obtained at frequencies of 2.15 and 1.29 cps show peaks in the range of measurement. The corresponding peak for the 0.78-cps curve is estimated, from the shift of this curve relative to the others, to be located slightly below the critical temperature (at 385C). The fact that the peak can be observed above the critical temperature is good evidence for the belief that it is a stress-induced ordering phenomenon similar to that which is observed in other disordered alloys. Sager6, using the heat-wave method of King, determined the thermal conductivity of copper, nickel and four alloys of the two metals. His results are included in Table 1.

The treatment of Balbach-Thum slimes at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co, is of interest because it differs considerably from methods usually employed for the recovery of fine gold from parting-plant slimes. Owing to the comparatively high percentages of palladium and platinum, wet methods are used to remover the greater proportion of these metals before electrolytic refining in the Wohlwill cells. The Plant The platinum-metals department, Wohlwill room, and gold-melting room extend along the north side of the silver refinery and are separated from the parting plant by a glass partition (Figs. 1 and 2). The platinum-metals department resembles a laboratory built on a large scale, with the various pieces of equipment laid out on terraces to facilitate handling. Because of the corrosive nature of the solutions, chemical stoneware is used throughout. Elevation of acids is accomplished by means of Mariotte bottles. On the top level are three steam-jacketed stoneware kettles of 50-gal. capacity, also a packed tower. One kettle is used for digesting the slimes while the remaining kettles are used for precipitating the gold. The dissolver is equippcd with a treated concrete hood, which is connected to the flue system. Gases are drawn off through the packed tower by means of a 6-in. stoneware exhaust fan. A 15 per cent solution of sodium carbonate is continually circulated through the tower. On the intermediate level are two suition filters, one for removing silver chloride and the other for the gold sand. The filter medium consists of an asbestos pad covered with a filter paper on which is a layer of twill. On the bottom level are two rectangular cementation tanks, 24 by 48 by 24 in. deep, and a suction filter used for removing the platinum-metal concentrates. The circulating pump for the packed tower is also here. Suction is provided by a vacuum pump having a capacity of 8 cu. ft. at 20-in. vacuum.

The puiblication by the Institute of a small geological map of the United States calls for an explanation of its peculiarities. The title intimates that it is intended "to illustrate the schemes of coloration and nomenclature recommended by the International Geological Congress." By way of further explanation it is said to be "based, by permission of the Director of the United States Geological Survey, upon the map published in his Fifth Annual Report, the portions not colored in that map being here supplied from other sources." The map referred to was prepared by W. J. McGee, and in the text of the report containing it he has given a list of the authorities employed in the compilation. The scheme of coloration used for the map was the one proposed by the Director, in the Seeond Annual Report, for the publications of the United States Geological Survey, which differed materially from those employed by the older American geologists. Because of the increasing diversity in the particular colors employed to represent rocks by geologists in different countries, and of the existence of very dissimilar schemes of nomenclature, it seemed best to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at its Buffalo meeting in 1876, to appoint an international committee of geologists, who should consult together, and, if feasible, to call an International Congress to discuss these subjects. The proposition met with favor, and the meeting was called. The first session was held at Paris, in 1878, when geologists were present from twenty different countries. Once organized, the Congress has perpetuated itself, enacting regulations for its conduct, choosing the French language for its medium of communication, and arranging for the compilation of a geological map of Europe upon which the perfected schemes of coloration and nomenclature will be delineated. The American Association maintains a standing committee to represent it at the international sessions, and to report their proceedings. The following summary is written for the benefit of the practical operator in the nonmetallic field who wishes to know what geophysics has done and may be expected to do in his line of work. His problem is quite different from that of the geophysicist who has operated with various or all methods and has followed the literature, and who is assumed to be familiar with the geologic possibilities and limitations of each method. This article is not written for the latter, although he may be interested in the four or five hitherto unpublished surveys described. To the operator, on the other hand, geophysics is only secondary. His problem is to determine which geophysical method is best suited to his special needs. If he wanted to know, however, which method could be used to locate a certain material of given physical properties, building stone, for instance, he would have to wade through a tremendous amount of geophysical literature, bibliographies and articles, before he could find what he wanted. Therefore, the purpose of this summary is to present the geological problems first and then to discuss the comparative merits of the geophysical methods that can be, or have been, applied. Choice of Geophysical Methods in Oil, Civil and Mining Engineering In the first two of these fields, the geological problems are not nearly so complex as in the metal and nonmetallic mining fields. The selection of the correct geophysical method in these fields is not nearly so difficult for the operator. For oil prospecting, his problems have been discussed exhaustively by E. DeGolyer.(1) † In civil engineering (foundation and ground-water work), the usefulness of electrical methods has been so well established that there is hardly any choice of other methods at present. The situation may be changed in the future with the perfection of the seismic reflection method for shallow depths. In the mining field the operator and often the geophysicist himself finds difficulty in determining which method is best suited for a given
