The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600' C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

This paper outlines the trends in gold production since the discovery of America, in the world as a whole, and in the principal producing regions as well. World production climbed at an average rate of about 20,000,000 oz. per 5-year period until the record all-time output of 111,307,000 oz. in the period ending with 1915. Production fell off during the war period, but has been mounting since 1925, and will probably be nearly 100,000,000 oz. for the 5-year period ending in 1930. Total world production of gold from 1492 to the end of 1930, as closely as can be determined, is more than 1,061,000,000 fine ounces. More than one-half of this total, or about 575,000,000 oz., has been mined since 1900. In percentage of world production, the United States jumped from 4.8 per cent for the decade 1831-1840 to 44.5 per cent for the five years ending with 1855. This is the highest figure ever reached by this country, although, with the exception of the 10-year period ending 1865, it ranked first among the nationa from 1849 until the end of 1905. During the 5-year period ending with that year, the United States produced 24.7 per cent of the world's gold. The tremendous increase from South Africa following 1890 resulted in that country's becoming the largest contributor for the five years 1906-1910, a position it has held with increasing dominance ever since. Relegated to second place in the period 1906 to 1910, the United States produced nearly 20 per cent of the world's new gold until 1920. From 1921 to 1925 it averaged 13.6 per cent and since then it has continued to decline in relative importance, accounting for only 10.9 per cent in 1927. Final figures for 1930 may place Canada second among the gold producers of the world.

MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

NEW place was assigned to the women for their headquarters at the annual meeting of the Auxiliary but they, as usual, occupied a large place in the activities of the annual meeting. The alcove on the Thirty-ninth Street side of the building was a busy place on Monday morning, as the members of the various sections from New York to California greeted each other. The registration was conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Wolfes, Miss Georgene Davis and Mrs. Jennings, while Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Charlton Reynders, and others dispensed tickets to the various functions that had been provided for entertainment. There seemed to be the usual number registered, but when only one member of the District of Columbia Section made herself known everyone wondered why the large delegation of last year had so dwindled. The explanation appeared next day, when a number of others from that Section arrived, telling of a delightful reception on the night before, at the White House. Mrs. Hoover had honored the "Canaries"¬(the organization of Lone Girl Scout' workers) the officers of the Section, and their husbands, who for once became only "so and so's husband." Luncheon was served on the fifth floor on Monday, the hostesses for that day being Mesdames C. F. Ayer, Willis Burns, G. W. Farny, H. G. Moulton, and T. T. Read. The Bulletin. As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.

THE section delegates assembled Monday morning with the incoming president, W. H. Bassett, in the chair and F. W. Bradley as vice-chairman. The secretary called the roll and urged the delegates to become familiar with the activities of the Institute. He explained the allotment of funds to local sections and the uses to which these funds may be put. He also announced plans for travel by Mr. Bassett and asked the delegates to confer with him as to meetings en route. An invitation was extended for all section delegates to attend the Directors' dinner Wednesday evening. He suggested that local sections hold a meeting once a year under the auspices of each division of the Institute. He further explained the system of choice of publications by members. The question of licensing of engineers was brought up, and the consensus of opinion among the membership was asked for. Because the matter is controversial, no official action has been taken and it was suggested that the' local and State sections act separately in this regard. A. B. Parsons, the assistant secretary, next spoke. In his remarks he indicated surprise that many prominent mining men still did not belong to the Institute, and urged that section delegates make up a list of such prospective members and send it in to the office for study by the New York staff. THE first and most important thing that affects the majority of lead producers in the Rocky Mountains and the western mining regions is that zinc in an ever-increasing degree is inseparably associated with the lead. The Sullivan mine in British Columbia is not only a great lead mine, but also a great zinc producer. This mine could not reach its full measure of productiveness, nor was its great value established, until a reasonably good physical method was developed for separating the lead from the zinc prior to the recovery of each metal by an appropriate process. The western metallurgists and also metallurgists in other parts of the world have long faced the lead-zinc problem. This for many years stimulated a great deal of experimental work looking toward the development of a physical or chemical method of separating lead and zinc in concentrated form from complex ores. Space will not permit of going into this work in detail, but it is sufficient to say that with but few exceptions the western lead smelter continued smelting charges many times too high in zinc for the most efficient operation of lead furnaces. The zinc was not only lost, as the zinc content of many a western slag dump bears mute testimony, but the cost of lead smelting was increased by reason of the presence of the zinc. The owner of the ore under these circumstances could be paid nothing for the zinc and, indeed, he was penalized for it

"The Midvale. Plant of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company, situated twelve miles south of Salt Lake City, consists of mills for concentrating lead-zinc ores and a custom lead smelter.The milling department includes a 475-ton gravity mill for ores from the United States Mines at Bingham, a 100-ton Huff electrostatic zinc plant and a 60-ton pilot flotation mill for differential separation of lead and zinc. The gravity mill and electro¬static plant are being replaced by a 600-ton differential flotation plant, now under con¬struction, for differential separation of lead, zinc and iron. This new mill will have cap¬acity for treating custom ores in addition to ores from the company's mines at Bingham.The smelting department is equipped to handle 1600 tons of charge per day through six blast furnaces, 48 inches by 160 inches at the tuyeres. All gases from both blast furnaces and roasters are filtered through baghouses, which remove the dust from the gases so effectively that even when the plant is running at full capacity no smoke can be seen coming out of the 450-foot brick stack handling rca2ter gases, nor out of the two shorter steel stacks which take the blast furnace gases. On this account the Midvale plant has come to be known as the ""smokeless smelter.""The blast furnace gases are filtered through 832 woolen bags, 33 feet 6 inches by 18 inches in diameter, and 1200 woolen bags, 28 feet by 12 inches in diameter."

Two types of decline curves are considered and their applications are discussed. The first is the well-known semilogarithmic decline curve having the rate of production plotted on the logarithmic scale and the time on the horizontal scale. The other curve is the percentage of oil in the fluid versus cumulative production, and it is plotted on Cartesian coordinate paper. These curves are illustrated by carefully and adequately labeled graphs. Where conditions permit application of both types of curves for rationally determining the reserves of a well, both should be applied and the most conservative reserve should be chosen. Formulas are given for determining the economic limits. For a semi-l~~arithmic~decline curve the formula is: A = B X C X D X E X F or B = A/C ? D X E X F A = total monthly operating cost (average of past year), B = economic limit in barrels of oil per day, C = days in an average month = 30.4, D = market price of crude per barrel, E = 1-royalty, F = 1-gross production tax, G = water production in barrels per day at the economic limit, H =per cent oil in fluid at economic limit. The economic limit for a per cent oil in the fluid curve is: H = B/B+G X 100 The semilogarithmic decline curve is treated first. PROSPECTING for oil in Spain has been going on for many years but only in a very haphazard way and without adequate geological or technical advice. Shallow wells have been drilled in several provinces but, for the most part, they have been doomed to failure from the beginning because of unfavorable geological locations, inadequate drilling equipment inexperienced operators, or lack of sufficient capital. Geologists seem to agree that the most favorable chances for commercial fields are in the northern part of Spain where the petroliferous Triassic beds underlie Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The prov-vinces of Santander, Burgos, Alava, Vizcaya, Navarra, and Guipuzcoa seem to offer the most promising localities. Several shallow wells have been drilled near Villamartin about 60 Km. northeast of Cadiz. One of these wells produced a small quantity of light oil but was never operated. The Spanish Government has been drilling on a well in this district for some time, using the Russian free-fall drilling system. The present depth is about 3000 meters. Several years ago the Compania Petrolera Franco-Espanola drilled a well to a depth of about 700 meters near Elorrio, province of Vizcaya. A diamond-core drill was used. The well was located on vertical Cretaceous beds near an igneous dike. The same company, in March, 1923, made a new location about 500 meters away from the first well and the same distance from the dike, in beds dipping about 80°, and is now drilling its No. 2 well. The last depth reported was about 200 meters.

MUCH has been written relative to the errors involved in the use of a galvanometer for measuring thermocouple electromotive forces. In general, it may be said that accuracy with a galvanometer is secured only at the sacrifice of durability, unless manual adjustment is made in the operation of the instrument to overcome the errors of resistance. and resistance changes. The pyrovolter and the potentiometer both require manual adjustment for every reading, readings being taken on a "null" method. To the end that some of these balances may be eliminated and only an occasional balance be made as a check reading, the "continuously deflecting pyrovolter" was developed. Essentially, the operation of the continuously deflecting pyrovolter is to determine the resistance of the thermocouple circuit, though its value is not noted or indicated, then throwing in series with the thermocouple sufficient resistance to bring the sum up to some standard value for which the indications of the galvanometer will be correct. This result may, however, be accomplished in a somewhat simpler manner, for which general method patents are now in the course of application. If we devise a galvanometer circuit so that by means of a simple adjustment the resistance of the entire circuit will be rendered equal to some constant predetermined value, we may rely on the galvanometer to give correct e.m.f. indications (assuming that the errors of temperature resistance coefficient and cold junction have been properly allowed for), and will indicate temperature continuously where the e.m.f. measured is developed by a thermocouple.

Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.

Among the parameters to be considered in the continuous search for new base-metal deposits, there often is a stratigraphic controlling factor that seems instrumental in the localization of ore. In British Columbia, for instance, the Upper Triassic as well as Lower Jurassic volcanics mixed with sediments are a useful indication in the search for copper while, in some parts of Australia, rhyolite bodies seem to be the favorable indicator, and this always within the geosynclinal environment. In Arizona, this stratigraphic factor becomes highly significant and it will be shown here that a large number of ore deposits are to be located around the flanks of ancient calcareous basins or depressions, preferentially corresponding to a certain optimum thickness as revealed by isopachs. The Martin limestone, of Devonian age, is already known for its basal O'Carroll bed which coincides with mineralization at places, and this is a relatively minor control. However, several limestone basins outlined by isopachs are in reality of greater importance as they localize mining districts. Indeed, most mines are found to coincide with a specific thickness of limestone while occurring simultaneously close to major, regional fracture intersections. The regional fractures in question were interpolated and extrapolated from known, important fault expressions, integrating quite well with the existing geology and further confirmed by minor criteria such as contacts, igneous plugs, axes of elongation of batholiths, dikes, etc. Although elements of subjectivity remain, this grid of fractures can be used quite successfully as a working hypothesis in the search for ore. Noranda Mines, of Quebec, signed a contract for construction of a $20 million copper refinery at Gaspe, P.Q. The plant is expected to have a 65500-ton daily capacity for both concentrator and smelter. Extensive drilling. around Gaspe has revealed more than 65 million tons of 1 to 2 pct copper in several deposits. Cerro de Pasco Corp. has called a special stockholders meeting for August 19 to obtain permission to engage in the oil and natural. gas business, in addition to its present production of zinc, lead, copper, silver and other metals. St. Joseph Lead Co. recently entered the oil development field. The United States, Canada and Great Britain have agreed to establish a permanent organization to work on unification of engineering standards. General accord has been reached on drafting standards and practices, screw threads, fittings for gas cylinders, and fits and tolerances. Permanent committees will study these fields. Reconstruction Finance Corn approved the largest sum in its history. for a mining enterprise when it loaned $94 million to San Manuel Copper. Corp., of Pinal County, Ariz. The loan will be used to increase production of copper and molybdenum, in what was described as-the biggest copper deposits in the country. Three large gold mining concerns operating in the Philippines told the Philippine Wage Board that they would be forced to close if they had to boost miners' wages 500 to $2 per day. The companies are Mindanao Mother Lodes, Benguet Consolidated, and Balatoc Mining Co.

THIS note reports a determination of the melting point of germanium, and the liquidus of the Ge-Ga alloys; lattice constants of the a phase are given. The alloys were prepared by melting germanium (>20 ohm-cm resistivity) and gallium (99.6 pct) in evacuated silica tubes. The materials (50 to 70 g) were heated at 1000°C, held in the liquid state for about ¾ hr, and then cooled rapidly in the tubes. Points on the liquidus were obtained by thermal analysis which consisted of obtaining time-temperature data during heating and cooling the materials in high purity graphite crucibles and a helium at- mosphere. Temperatures were determined with a Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a silica sheath. The couple was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated couple and also against the freezing points of copper, silver, aluminum, and the 28.1 wt pct Cu, 71.9 wt pct Ag alloy eutectic. The samples for X-ray analysis were prepared by heating small pieces of the ingots in evacuated glass or quartz tubes at temperatures between 600" and 900°C for periods ranging from 2 hr to 22 days, periods deemed sufficient for equilibrium to be attained, followed by quenching in water. The heat-treated samples were ground to powder for X-ray analysis. The lattice constants of the germanium-rich phase (a) were determined with a baok-reflection focusing camera. Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5' to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30' to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. Greenall, Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory Division, Frankford Arsenal, Ordnance Department, U.S.A., suggested to the American Society for Testing Materials that it might be a propitious time to arrange for a symposium on stress-corrosion cracking at the Annual Meeting of the Society in June, and agreed to make available a number of papers relating to work being carried out at that Arsenal. The Society's Committee B-5 on Copper and Copper Alloys, Cast and Wrought expressed keen interest in the symposium, and other Society committees were contacted and agreed to cooperate. Since the subject is one of primary interest also to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, it was arranged that the two organizations would jointly sponsor the symposium. A Symposium Committee was formed under the joint leadership, for A.S.T.M., of Carter S. Cole, then Chief of the Metals Branch, Conservation Division, War Production Board and now Engineer on the Headquarters Staff of the Society; and, for A.I.M.E., of E. A. Anderson, Chief of Metals Section, Research Division, New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) and chairman of the Program Committee of the Institute of Metals Division.
