Laboratory-scale decopperizing experiments with multiple sulfur addifions were conducted at 330°C on ternary Pb-Cu alloys containing, as the third elenlent, Sn, Ag, As, Sb, Bi, Zn, and Au, common impurities in lead blast-furnace bullion. For silver and tin, an increased rate and extent of 'cofifier removal was obsert3ed. The elements As, Sb, Zn, Au, and Bi had no effect or less effect as compared to sulfur additions with no i)npurily additions. THE production of primary lead in the blast furnace yields an impure lead frequently containing such impurities as copper. antimony. arsenic. tin, gold, silver iron, oxygen. and sulfur. By cooling this lead to a temperature near its melting point. most of the iron, sulfur, and oxygen and part of the other impurities are removed in the form of a dross. With incipient solidification of the lead, the copper concentration wil have been reduced to 0.02 to 0.05 pct. depending upon the concentration of the other impurities. according to Davey.' Since copper interferes with the treatment of silver after the desilverizing process, it is desirable to decrease the copper content of the lead still fur-ther before the lead is desilvered. The decopperizing of the lead is accomplished by stirring a small quantity. approximately 0.1 pct. of elemental sulfur into the lead at a temperature near its melting point, 330" to 360°C. The copper is removed as a copper sulfide which constitutes a small fraction of a voluminous dross consisting mostly of lead sulfide and entrained metallic lead. The residual copper concentration following the decopperizing operation is frequently as low as 0.001 to 0.005 pct. Thi fact has aroused considerable interest because the equilibrium copper concentration of lead in contact with solid PbS and solid Cu2S is at least an order of magnitude greater, 0.05 pct Cu at 330C. 1, 2 Most investigators have suggested that various impurities in the lead bullion are responsible for the very low copper concentrations frequently encountered in practice. There is little agreement, however? as to which of the impurities are helpful and which are not.3"11 Also. few investigators have sought to explain the mechanisms responsible for the removal of copper to very low concentrations. Willis and Blanks9 have proposed that a nonstoichiometric copper-deficient cuprous sulfide forms in place of the supposed Cu2S. Being copper-deficient, this sulfide phase would possess a low copper activity, and the diffusion of copper dissolved in the liquid lead into this phase would be greatly facilitated. Pin and wagner2 have investigated the removal of copper from liquid lead by studying the effect of impurity-doped lead sulfide on the decopperizing of pure Pb-Cu alloys. Samples of the doped PbS were held in contact with copper-saturated lead for 1 week at 33'7°C. They reported a beneficial effect on decopperizing with bismuth and antimony and no effect with tin or silver. which is directly opposite to the results observed in practice and those reported by Davey 3 and this studv. The purpose of this paper is to describe the effects of certain additive elements on the extent to which copper can be removed fro111 liquid lead by successive additions of sulfur. The impurity elements were added individually to prepared Pb-Cu alloys. The resulting ternary alloys as well as a binary Pb-Cu alloy were then decopperized with repeated additions of sulfur. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Granulated test lead with a purity of 99.999 pct and the additive elements Cu. Ag. Sb. Bi. Zn. Sn. and Au with purities of 99.99 pct were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. The major impurities in the lead were 1 ppm each of iron and copper. all others being less than 1 ppm. The arsenic used was a technical-grade arsenic of 98+ pct purity. Reagent-grade flowers of sulfur were melted under argon to provide small pieces free of fines. Apparatus. The decopperizing experiments were carried out in a 25-mm-OD by 375-mm-long Pyrex tube sealed at one end. The tube was mounted vertically in a resistance-heated. hinge-type tube furnace controlled to within ±lcC. Temperature measurement was accomplished by means of a standardized chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed into the base of a silica. paddle-type stirring rod. All decopperizing experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere. Procedure. A Pb-Cu starting alloy containing 0.05 pet Cu was prepared under carbon and poured into cold tap water to produce shot. The ternary alloys were prepared by melting together 100 g of the starting alloy and a sufficient amount of the impurity element to yield the desired concentration. The resulting alloy was then homogenized in a Pyrex tube at 450C with continuous stirring. The furnace temperature was then lowered to the operating temperature of 330°C. When thermal equilibrium had been obtained at the operating temperature, individual additions of 0.2 pct (0.2 g) of solid sulfur were added to the melt and stirred in. Stirring was continued for a period of 3 min. discontinued for 5 min. and resumed for the remaining 2 min of a 10-min cycle. This cycle was repeated for as many sulfur additions as desired. When the decopperizing experiment had been completed the lead bullion was quenched and samples of the bullion and dross phases were taken for analysis. Results. The contribution of grain boundary shear to total elongation, CS/E&apos;, has been measured in an Al-Zn eu-tectoid alloy that was quenched from above the invariant temperature, then annealed at 250° C to a grain size of&apos; 1.8 p. At 250°C, ks/E&apos; is low at both high and low strain rates, but reaches a maximum, estimated as 60 pct at an intermediate rate of 5 X 10 per rnin. Rate sensitivity, as measured by the index m = a log a/a log E&apos;, follows the same trend, and furthermore the maximum values of m and -cur at approximately the same strain rate. This result, combined with the metallographic observation that boundary migration enhances boundary shearing, is interpreted as supporting a previous suggestion that the high rate sensitivity characterizing super-plasticity is the result of combined boundary shearing and migration. It is suggested that the latter event relieves stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that stress is governed largely by a viscous boundary shear. GrAIN boundary shear has been considered in relation to superplasticity in several recent papers.&apos; The problem has been to explain the high strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, and the variation of rate sensitivity with strain rate (E&apos;) and grain size (L). The requirements for superplasticity, small L and high T, suggest the reasonableness of an approach to high rate sensitivity involving grain boundary shear. Further support came from experiments on the A1-Cu eutectic alloy,&apos; where it was found that strain rate sensitivity of cast material annealed to produce an equiaxed, micron-size grain is always low; taking as an index of rate sensitivity m = a log a/a log <, m < 0.3. However, m in hot-worked alloy of comparable grain size can be as high as 0.7. In the cast and annealed material, each phase is a single crystal, the only boundaries are interphase boundaries, and it is, consequently, geometrically impossible for boundary shear to contribute to deformation in any major way. Other observations (for hot-worked material) were a-L at constant (low) strain rates and indications that the rate of recrystallization was enhanced as strain rate increased. As a result of this work, it was proposed that high rate sensitivity arises from a deformation mode of boundary shear associated with boundary migration. Migration serves to relieve stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that they assume properties of fluid films. On the other hand, the low rate sensitivity observed at high and low strain rates reflects deformation of bulk material. Measurement of the variation of grain boundary shear with strain rate and m have not yet been made. Such measurements are important, especially in view of a proposal, differing in detail from the above, that high m arises merely from a transition between a grain boundary shear mode of deformation at low rates to a transgranular mode at high rates.2&apos;4 In the present work, the contribution of boundary shear to total deformation is measured and in addition metallographic observations are made on surfaces of deformed specimens to look at the interaction between boundary shear and migration. The Al-Zn eutectoid alloy was chosen for its homogeneous, fine-grained structure, which is obtained readily without hot-working. It has also been the subject of a previous phenom-enologically directed study. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Compression specimens, cross section 4 by + in., length \ in., were machined from a sand-cast ingot of composition 77.5 wt pct Zn, 22.5 wt pct Al. (The melt was prepared from 99.9 pct Zn and 99.99 pct Al.) After homogenization at 375°C for 50 hr, the specimens were quenched in brine and removed before the heat evolution that accompanies de -composition of the high-temperature phase.5&apos;6 The resulting microstructure, see Fig. l(a), was too fine for grain boundary sliding to be easily studied; coarser structures were obtained by annealing for various times at 2 50°C. Annealing was terminated by a brine quench. Final average intercept lengths between all grain boundaries (both interphase and those lying in a phase), L, were: 0.5 p [annealed for 15 min, Fig. (a)], 0.8, 1.1, and 1.8 p [Fig. l(b)l. Testing Procedure. An Instron machine was used for most of the compressive deformation. Tests were of two types: those in which crosshead velocity was changed in steps to measure m as a function of strain rate15 and tests at constant velocity to a fixed (engineering) strain of -0.2 (20 pct). Stress reached a steady-state value (a) which was plotted, on a logarithmic scale, against log strain rate (E&apos;). An alternate and equivalent evaluation of m was to take the slope of the log o vs log 6 curve. Time at temperature before testing was 15 min. Strain rates covered by the Instron (4 x lo-&apos; to 4 x 10&apos; per min) were insufficient; at a higher rate of 5 x lo2 per min a gas-operated testing machine was used, the gas driving a piston to compress the specimen at a controlled velocity.&apos; To obtain points on the log a vs log E&apos; curve at low rates, specimens were compressed by a dead weight. strain rate was an average value computed by dividing strain at the end of test by loading time. In some tests strain was measured at fractions of the loading time; creep rate was found to be reasonably constant.

The development of computer programs to solve complex ventilation networks has reached a point of refinement where these programs become a necessary tool of the ventilating engineer. Such a program is presented. This program has an increased efficiency over its predecessors; it also includes the important facility of fixed quantity branches. This is in addition to the earlier capabilities of free-splitting, internal or external fans, and natural ventilation pressures. The program is written in Fortran IV with double-precision arithmetic and is listed here. Sample problems with input and output are also given. The recent, and presumably continuing, official interest in mine safety is bound to result in more stringent control requirements for ventilation. Anticipating this requirement, the Dept. of Mining, The Pennsylvania State University, has developed a computer program for the solution of complex mine ventilation networks. It is the opinion of this department that the program has sufficient merit to warrant its use in normal industrial operating conditions. Although the undergraduate mining engineering students of this department are routinely trained to use the program, it was felt that this training did not present a fast enough means of dissemination; consequently, this paper was written. The conception of the program is not new;1; however, the present version incorporates features that changes it from a scientific endeavor to a useful operating tool. These features include those of earlier programs, such as free-splitting, external or internal fans, and natural ventilation processes plus the important ability of handling fixed quantity branches, and of increased efficiency giving reduced cost. The facility for fixed quantities will be discussed in more detail. The solution of any network depends upon satisfying Kirchchoff&apos;s laws. These state that the sum of flow at any junction is zero, and that the sum of the pressure drop in branches totals the pressure drop in the mesh constituted by those branches, that is that the pressure drop around any mesh is zero. The terminology is derived from Synge," and is, in fact, that used by Topologists. A branch is any airway of uniform characteristics; a junction is where two or more airways meet (the minimum number of two airways is useful for describing the point where a low resistance airway changes into a high resistance one due to some physical constriction); a mesh is a path, along some branches, that returns on to itself, but does not need to traverse the same branch twice in order to do so; and a tree describes all those branches in a network which, while connected through all the junctions, do not form any meshes. Obviously the branches-in-tree are open-ended and can be shown to be one less than the number of junction (J-1). The branches-out-of-tree, also called basic branches, are equal to the number of basic meshes and are M = N — J + 1, where M is the number of meshes and N is the number of branches. The major difference between this network and an electrical one is that the law attributed to Atkinson for pressure drop is utilized rather than Ohm&apos;s law. Atkinson stated that the pressure drop (potential) is equal to a resistance factor multiplied by the quantity squared. This is written H = RlQlQ where H is the head loss. Q? is written in this factored fashion so that H will always have the same sign as Q. A negative sign is used to indicate that flow in a branch is opposite to that of its containing mesh. A mesh takes the direction of its basic branch. Utilizing Atkinson&apos;s law in Kirchchoff&apos;s second law and bearing in mind that the first law must remain satisfied, the program will determine all quantities, or head losses as they are related, for the branches of the network. The program uses a Geuss-Seidel form of in-teration, starting from an arbitrary Q and using a correction factor of the type first suggested by Professor Hardy Cross&apos; that will handle the nonlinear equation of Atkinson&apos;s law. A fuller description of the interative process is included in Wang and Hartman.&apos; Iteration continues until the correction factor is less than or equal to a preset error (E) or until a maximum number of iterations (MAXIT) have been reached. Utilizing an E of 50 cfm, sample problems have had rapid solutions. Rapidity of solution is also ensured by the method of selecting meshes and basic branches. This is done by the computer, which chooses the highest resistance branches, fixed quantity branches, and those containing fans, as basic branches. Natural ventilation pressures are handled as fans of constant pressure and may be assigned to any branch. The computer will generate a fan characteristic by polynominal fitting if a few operating points from the desired fan are input. A fan may be placed in any branch of the network, except those with fixed quantities. The strength of the present program over its earlier versions is its ability to handle fixed quantity branches. This means that certain branches can have their quantity determined, or preset, by the ventilating engineer. Operating under this constraint, the program will analyze the network and output the pressure change necessary to achieve this desired quantity. A call for positive head loss would require an auxiliary fan; negative head loss would require a regulator. This represents a powerful tool for the ventilating engineer who must insure that certain quantities of air pass across the operating faces or through working stopes. McPherson6 suggested that a ventilation program would be useful for determining in advance which branches were receiving inadequate air, and that subsequent calculations would then indicate the necessary corrections. The present program makes these corrections. Thus the mine manager can know immediately the consequences of changes to his system;

In 1946 Littlefield, Gray and Godbold published a thorough geologic description of the West Edmond Hunton Lime reservoir, located in Central Oklahoma, and discussion of its early performance.l They stressed implications of the nature of the reservoir rock on performance to be expected with production both by natural means and by pressure maintenance with gas injection. The essence of their analysis was that presence of an extensive interconnected system of fractures and solution channels constituting about 10 percent of the total reservoir void space in otherwise very low permeability reservoir rock would result in severe channeling of naturally encroaching water or injected gas through the fractures with little or no benefit to ultimate recovery of oil. Considerations were in progress to unitize the reservoir for pressure maintenance by gas injection. Some other engineers involved in the project had considerably different opinions at the time regarding continuity of fractures and regarding effects of such fractures on performance. The field was unitized Oct. 1, 1947. Subsequently, pilot gas injection tests were conducted in four areas of the field; large scale waterflooding was conducted in two parts of the field in the Bois d&apos;Arc or Upper Hunton; and pilot waterflooding was conducted in the Chimney Hill or Lower Hunton. Full scale water-flooding is now in progress in the Chimney Hill section where it is oil productive. The primary purpose of this paper is to divine some of the secrets of this reservoir through analysis of all aspects of its performance, with the hope that it will be of help to engineers and operators in developing and operating other low permeability fractured reservoirs. In part, this considers variance of actual performance from some widely used conventional reservoir engineering assumptions. For brevity, other aspects of unit operation and its benefits to the owners are not discussed. Oil and Gas in Place For unit participation, net pay in the Bois #Arc defined by the gross SP anomaly on electric logs totalled 2,100,000 acre-ft in the 30,000-acre reservoir. Development of West Edmond predated modem logging techniques that now would be used to determine "net" or "productive" pay. In Fig. 1 this log pick is compared with detailed core analysis and core descripfion by Littlefield et a1.l for one well identified as A on the index map in Fig. 2. Not all of the gross Bois #Arc section had oil staining, but all cores with measureable intergranular permeability were stained. (The committee selection of the Bois d&apos;Arc SP interval also includes the Frisco section as identified from cores by Littlefield.) The Bois d&apos;Arc is oil productive throughout the entire 600-ft monoclinal accumulation from the eastern upstructure erosional pinchout to the west-side oil-water contact. (See Littlefield et al.l and McGee and Jenkins for geologic detail.)

IN THE COURSE of its investigations directed toward providing strategic metals from domestic sources and toward utilizing power from Federal power projects in West, the Bureau of Mines concluded some years ago that the development of a method for producing electrolytic manganese might well be an important step towards both goals. Accordingly, laboratory investigations were undertaken in 1935. Further studied on a relatively large laboratory scale indicated that electrolytic manganese could be made from domestic ores at a cost not out of line with other nonferrous metals. On the basis of these results, the Electro Manganese Corp. Operating under U.S. Patent 2,119,560 issued to S, M, Shelton and assigned to the Secretary of the Interior for administration, undertook commercial production of electrolytic manganese at Knoxville, Tenn, This company has brought the process through the pilot-plant stage successfully, and is now regularly producing approximately one ton a day.

ABOUT three miles west of Fontana San Bernardino County, California, and fifty miles east of Los Angeles, the Kaiser Co., Inc., has built an integrated steel plant. By integrated, I mean that from its wholly owned iron ore and coal supply, the Kaiser Co. is producing in its own mills iron and steel products. Pig iron to meet the West Coast needs has been produced at Fontana since Jan. 1, 1943; steel ingots were first poured there May 14, 1943; and steel plate for ships was first rolled Aug. 15, just sixteen months after ground was broken. Briefly, the plant consists of: (I) Two batteries of by-product coke ovens, totalling ninety ovens, carbonizing about 1740 tons of coal per day at capacity; with by-product facilities for the production of tar, ammonia, and ammonium suIphate, light oil distillates, and tar distillates. THE United Electric Coal Companies, operating large strip mines at various points in Illinois, pioneered in developing and perfecting the strip method of mining coal by use of large shovels and drag-lines. Coal stripping was first started on the properties owned by this company near Danville, Ill., in 1885. The first mechanical&apos; excavating machine used for the purpose was really a dredge minus the hull, which had been purchased from the Marion Steam Shovel Co. It was erected on a wood frame supported by wheels and was referred to as a dry-land dredge or stripping machine. Wood was used throughout in the construction of this primitive excavator, even for the boom which was 50 ft. long. A single-cylinder vertical steam engine furnished power to hoist the %-yd. dipper arid swing the boom. 400 cu. yd. of overburden moved in a day was a great record.

Following closely Marcona Corp.&apos;s announcement of its new Marconaflo process for transporting mineral slurries by ship (see pp. 96-97, Sept. 1969 [ ]), Midland-Ross Corp. (M-R) now heralds its metallized iron pellet process which supplements Oregon Steel Mills1 (Oregon Steel) new Portland, Ore., plant. Harry J. Bolwell, president of M-R describes the company&apos;s M-R Pellet as "the most exciting advance in steelmaking in a decade, one which will profoundly affect the industry." In fact, other knowledgeable industry spokesmen believe that with these developments the mini-steel plant era is now here and that this technical development along with the Marconaflo process will revolutionize iron ore shipments and steelmaking. The M-R president predicts that electric furnaces can account for 20% of the annual U.S. steel production by 1975, compared with 14% at the present time because of these developments.

NINETEEN states have on their statutes laws requiring engineers practicing within their borders to be licensed sixteen other states have such laws under consideration. While mining engineers are not specifically referred to in every case, they are referred to by implication. In only a few states have mining engineers taken any active interest in this subject, either in support or in opposition, yet it is a matter of very grave importance to them. By some it is thought that it is now too late to take any active steps toward preventing or repealing a type of legislation for which there appears to be a growing demand from some source. And it is further thought that the best course for those who are interested is to endeavor to guide legislation so that the remaining states may enact laws containing as few objectionable features as possible.

HAVE been asked many times by financial men in New York as to the best way of securing an interest or control of a gold mine in Canada. It must be understood at the start that prospectors and early owners will not sell a 100 per cent interest. They not only retain from 10 to 25 per cent interest, depending upon the work done, but usually demand more or less cash to reimburse them for expenses. These conditions are accepted by Canadian capital and operating mines looking for new properties. The winter is not a hindrance to work but may be of great advantage. The overburden of soil and gravel is generally wet and most difficult to trench in the summer time especially if at all deep. The snow also permits easy transportation of freight. Properties distant from rail transport all of their machinery and supplies during the winter months.

MOLYBDENUM is thought of as one of the rarer elements, for though it occurs in almost every country of the world it is seldom found in commercial quantities. In this country, however, there is one deposit which makes the term "rare" a misnomer. There are two commercially mined molybdenum minerals: molybdenite, the sulfide, and wulfenite, a lead molybdate. Of these two only the former is of any con- sequence but wulfenite is of mineralogical interest. It is frequently associated with oxidized lead ores and particularly in arid sections. Deposits, however, are usually quite superficial. It is highly oxidized and yet it does not appear to be an alteration product for it apparently disappears below water level and I know of no case where primary molybdenite, or in fact any molybdenum whatever has been identified below these surface wulfenite occurrences. The genesis of wulfenite would make an !- interesting study.

FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. This ran from $3 to $6 in gold, 2 to 3 oz. of silver, copper 0.6 per cent, lead 1.5,

THE method of presentation in the accompanying charts is based upon the well-known formula: production plus imports minus exports equals apparent consumption. Thus for each area for which data are shown there are two columns of equal height, one representing production plus imports, the other apparent consumption plus exports. Usually no account has been taken of increases or decreases in stocks. All columns and flow lines are drawn to a linear scale which is supplemented by figures showing the actual quantities represented. Owing to the small area occupied by the European countries on the world map it was impossible to show the details of the trade of the individual countries. All of Europe (except Russia), therefore, is shown as a single unit. However, statistics of production and consumption indicated elsewhere on the charts show the degree of self-sufficiency enjoyed by the major European powers.

THE Leadville tunnel, a Bureau of Mines project designed to unseal Colorado&apos;s rich but flooded lead, zinc, and manganese mines, is still being advanced, although the work is encountering severe difficulties. Work on the tunnel, begun in 1943, was dropped for lack of funds in 1945, and started again last September. The tunnel is one of the nation&apos;s toughest mining jobs. Fifty firms and individuals, who were asked to bid on the job of continuing be- yond the 6600-ft mark, didn&apos;t even answer. The work was finally taken over by the Utah Construction Co. of Salt Lake City. Since last September, the face has been moved 1000 ft closer to the flooded Leadville district mines, and to the hoped-for length of 17.300 ft. Some apparent success has already been noted, with an unusual decline in the water level in some major mine shafts reported this winter.

Henry D. Hibbard, New York City (communication to the Secretary): The title of Mr. Sargent&apos;s paper is somewhat misleading, since the paper itself relates chiefly to various kinds of annealing and their effects, and in very small part only to heat-treatment proper. This term has a well-defined meaning in steel metallurgf, and always includes a rate of cooling faster than the material treated would have in the open air. In bringing about this accelerated rate of cooling, some medium other than air at rest is brought into contact with the heated steel. Usually a liquid (almost always either oil or water) is employed ; but for certain steels a blast of air, and for others an easily fusible or soft metal, such as led (either solid or melted), may be used. Heat-treatment usually includes also subsequent moderate heating, followed, it may be, with another accelerated cooling.

By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.
