SOME years ago, in the manufacture of seamless tubing from an alloy steel containing 0.07 per cent maximum carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel, at the plant of The Babcock & Wilcox Tube Co., a peculiar type of piercing defect was noticed. This defect was definitely associated with certain heats of the alloy and was independent of any of the variables of mill operation and billet-heating condition. A thorough analysis of the defective material yielded but one clue to the reason for its abnormal behavior in piercing and that was its oxygen content as determined by the vacuum fusion method. The oxygen content of the defective 18-8 alloy was found to be from two to three times that of the material that had pierced satisfactorily, and this incited an active interest in the vacuum fusion method for the analysis of alloy steels. After a critical survey of the literature on this subject, and considerable experimentation, an apparatus and technique were evolved that gave a fairly rapid, simple and reliable method of analysis. Samples selected from six years of tube production of 18-8 and other corrosion-resistant alloys were analyzed by this method. This paper describes the procedure and gives a correlation of the oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of a number of alloy steel samples repre-sentative of good and bad tube-piercing quality.

In the last few years, much study has been devoted to increasing stoping efficiency. The reasons for this are shortage of manpower, shorter working hours, operating regulations, and shortages of essential materials. More efficiency in mining methods is needed to offset these adverse factors. In the past, attention has been centered upon haulage, hoisting equipment, mill flowsheets, etc., but recently the spotlight has been focused on the cost of stoping and the cost of handling materia,ls. Scrapers and scraper hoists have thus assumed greater importance. In order to make it possible for certain ore bodies to be mined at a profit, it has been necessary to apply assembly-line practices to the streamlining of mining methods. All cycles of the mining operation must balance, and the sooner broken ore is removed from the working face, the sooner another round can be started. Since the introduction of scraper hoists in metal mines more than thirty years ago, much progress has been made in their design and application. Alert operators are now constantly watching for methods in which to apply scrapers. The saving of: manpower in development work and the changing of mining methods that once employed manual handling of materials are increasing vital wartime tonnages. Essential ores from newly discovered ore bodies are moving rapidly from stopes to reduction plants—because it is now possible to develop an ore body and place it in production with a minimum of manpower and development work. Today, speed is one of the prime essentials of mining. Everywhere, there is a concentrated effort to use experienced miners in breaking rock, in timbering, and in carrying out the various phases of mining that require many months of training. Much effort is being made to mechanize the working places because experienced men naturally prefer to work where the majority of materials are handled mechanically. In line with this policy, many new men are being taught the details of scraper work, because even green men can quickly become acquainted with scrapers and thereby release older heads to perform the more skilled phases of mining. In some places it has been found economical to change from .one system of stoping to another that more readily allows the application of mechanical muck-handling equipment. Where blocks are worked faster, the cost of materials, time, and labor is cut drastically. This favorable situation allows more manpower to remain on straight breaking and timbering—or straight production mining. Moreover, when blocks are mined faster, more floors can often be mined vertically before the mucking or wheel floor is moved. This results in several direct savings. There are cases where it has been proved that by working a given block faster more area, longitudinally or vertically, could be mined at one time, thus permitting the reduction of development cost. Hydrogen forms a beta-stabilized system with titanium, with a beta eutectoid at about 300°C and 44 atomic pct H2. 'The solid solubility of hydrogen in alpha decreases from about 8 to about 0.1 atomic pct from 300°C to room temperature. Hydrogen has little effect on tensile properties, but decreases notch-bar toughness to a large degree. This latter effect appears to be the result of increased notch sensitivity. PRIOR to this investigation, only a small amount of information was available on the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The effects of the other interstitially soluble elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, had received detailed study. Jaffee and Campbell1 indicated that hydrogen up to 1 atomic pct did not affect tensile properties deleteriously. Pitler' indicated that 1 atomic pct H, in titanium reduced the impact strength appreciably, but his alloys contained appreciable amounts of oxygen, and it was difficult to attribute the embrittlement entirely to hydrogen. The high temperature portion of the equilibrium diagram for the Ti-H system was established by McQuillan," and his data generally corresponded with the results of Kirschfeld and Sieverts," Gibb and Kruschwitz," Bevington, Martin, and Mathews," and other investigators. The lower concentration limit of the hydride phase varied considerably among investigators, and Gibb and Kruschwitz9 ad shown that small amounts of contaminants in either titanium or hydrogen caused considerable variation in this lower limit. In view of this pronounced effect of contaminants, the extrapolated value of McQuillan's, about 48 atomic pct at the 325°C eutectoid, appeared the most reasonable. McQuillan's lowest experimental value was 54 atomic pct at a temperature of 450 °C. The density of titanium had been shown to decrease with increasing hydrogen content, but discrepancies were noted among the various investigations. The best values indicated that the density was decreased from 4.56 grams per cc at 0.27 atomic pctl to 3.84 grams per cc at 61.3 atomic pct? This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of hydrogen on a titanium, both in high purity and commercially pure metals, and on high purity a titanium alloys. Material and Fabrication The literature indicated that impurities in either the hydrogen or the titanium must be kept to a minimum. For this reason, the initial studies were made with high purity iodide-refined titanium. The vendor's analysis of the iodide titanium and the hydrogen content of the as-fabricated Y4 in. diameter rods are shown in Table I. Two 1 lb ingots were prepared by arc melting under argon in a water-cooled crucible, using a water,cooled tungsten electrode. This equipment has been described.' As-cast Brine11 hardness numbers of 88 and 58 for these ingots were low enough to insure that the high purity of the metal was maintained during arc melting. The ingots were hot forged to % in. diameter rods at 800°C, cleaned by grit blasting, and then cold swaged to Yz in. diameter rods. The rod was then air annealed at 725 "C, ground to remove scale, and cold swaged to Y4 in. diameter (75 pct reduction in area). The material was then annealed for 1 hr in argon at 800°C to develop an equiaxed a grain size of about 0.05 mm. Micro tensile specimens and microimpact specimens were machined from this rod prior to treatment in the Sieverts-type absorption apparatus. Two lots of commercially pure RC-55 titanium were also used in this investigation to determine the effects of hydrogen and the normal impurities on mechanical properties. The commercially pure RC-55 alloy was obtained in the form of % in. diameter rod. The analysis of this material is also given in Table I. The % in. diameter rods were hot swaged

A PREVIOUS paper1 has summarized the effect of A all metallic elements on the lattice parameters of magnesium. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature on the lattice parameters and the way in which that effect is modified by alloyed elements. The experimental techniques for sample preparation, exposure to the X-ray beam, measurement of line diameters, and calculation of the parameters were the same as reported in the previous paper. The temperature of the specimen was raised by surrounding the mounted compact with a conical Glas-Col,* the base of which was sealed with Saran film. In this way the temperature of the specimen could be raised to 200 °C, which was the maximum desired in the present study. Control of temperature was effected by maintaining a constant, desired voltage to the resistance coils of the Glas-Col through a Variac. Temperature was measured by an iron constantan thermocouple embedded in the body of the specimerl so that the thermocouple bead was within 1/16 in. of the surface exposed to the X-ray beam. Variation of temperature during an exposure was less than + 1/4 oF. A series of eight alloys, consisting of pure Mg, Mg+Ag, Mg+Al, and Mg+Sn were studied. All percentage values are in atomic percent. The results are given in Table I. The density values given in Table I were calculated from the lattice parameters, using an equation due to Foote and Jette:"

Accurate knowledge of the solid solubilities of the elements that dissolve in the important base metals is needed for guidance in the preparation and heat-treatment of the alloys derived from these components. While there is still difference of opinion concerning the merits of the X-ray and microscopic methods of determining such solubilities, it is certainly true that the recent extensive use of X-ray diffraction to review the existing constitutional data has revealed many glaring inaccuracies and has brought about a much improved knowledge of phase-boundary locations, which will inevitably come to include all of the important alloy systems. When the work is done with all necessary precautions it appears that in the majority of cases where the solubilities extend beyond a few tenths of a per cent the X-ray back-reflection technique is capable of furnishing the best of information in this field. For the most prolonged and thorough studies it is obviously advisable to combine the results of several methods, in particular, to obtain an agreement between X-ray and microscopic data. This paper reviews the work previously done on the solubilities of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in copper and, in consideration of the uncertainties thus made apparent, presents new X-ray data obtained with the first three members of this group. The small amalgamation-test of the laboratory is not always reliable as a basis for important decisions as to the character and commercial treatment of ores. The conditions of continuous practice on a large scale are not always reproduced in the brief laboratory-test. Sometimes such a reproduction would be very difficult, or impracticable; sometimes it is not even attempted, and the test is performed in a rough way, without regard to the effects of small variations in the methods pursued. The aim of a laboratory amalgamation-test is to learn how much of the gold or silver in an ore can be economically recovered by amalgamation on a commercial scale. The yield can be increased, perhaps, by additional chemical treatment or by extreme comminution of the ore; but this might cost more than the value of such increase. Moreover, in practice, other operations often follow amalgamation; and these operations may remedy a defective extraction by amalgamation, more economically than could be done by directly increasing that extraction. The test should be performed, therefore, upon a uniformly-sized material, and under conditions that are precisely known and capable of being exactly duplicated, or purposely modified. The crucial feature of the test is the effectiveness of the contact made between the gold or silver of the ore and the amal-gamating-surfme. This may depend upon the temperature; the duration of contact; its force, due to gravity or impact; the hardness, plasticity or liquidity of the amalgam; the roughness or other quality of the amalgam-surface; the scouring action of the ore upon the amalgam, or the suspension and

His efforts have been confined to mining, preparing, and separating the magnetic ore from the gangue. Particle size distributions of the solids fraction in typical coal preparation plant black water have been evaluated. The carbonaceous and mineral fractions were found to have distinctly different size distributions: the mineral matter being significantly finer than the carbonaceous material in all cases. Based on analyses of 13 samples obtained from the Appalachian, mid-continent and western regions of the US, it was found that, on the average, 83% of the mineral particles but only 41 % of the coal particles were finer than 44 pm (325 mesh). Typically, the size distributions of the mineral matter fraction tend to be bimodal, probably due to the presence of relatively coarse quartz, calcite, pyrite, etc., together with much finer clay particles.

Stockpiles in the minerals industries serve a wide variety of purposes. Usually they are for surge between stages of processing, for a dependable plant feed in anticipation of delays, or to provide for single or double shift mining in conjunction with round-the-clock milling. Often surge piles are necessary to insure a uniform feed to continuous process equipment where the material is received as an intermittent or variable flow. Extensive use is made of stockpiling for the primary purpose of blending. The significant fact about all stockpiling of bulk materials is that storing and reclaiming are two separate and distinct operations and they may present widely different problems in the selection of methods and tools.

A problem often encountered is the provision of materials which have impurity contents below a certain specified level. This problem is in some cases solved by making use of the segregation of the impurity with respect to the liquid and solid states of the material: an ingot of the material is subjected to directional solidification and the ends of the ingot. which are richer in solutes which respectively raise and lower the melting point of the solvent, are removed. An important extension of this process is the zone-refining process invented by pfann,' in which molten zones are passed successively along the length of an ingot and displace solutes towards the ends. Pfann's process is particularly appropriate in cases for which the segregation coefficient k does not differ greatly from unity, or when the impurity content must be kept extremely low (-=,6 atom fraction); it is widely used, particularly in the purification of materials for use in semiconductor electronic devices. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate theoretically the efficiency of the above refining processes; that is! we determine the most economic method of attaining a given yield of solvent of specified purity, taking into account the variables of the process. One variable of interest is the effective value of the segregation coefficient. which depends on the rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface and on the degree of stirring in the liquid; in addition to this, in the zone-refining process we are also interested in the choice of zone length for most efficient operation. A mathematical determination is made here of the lengths of successive molten zones which give, for an initially uniform distribution, the most efficient removal of a solute of arbitrary distribution coefficient. In order to be able to give a quantitative treatment of efficiency, we first define figures of merit applicable to a given distribution of solute. SUMMARY THE cost of labor turnover in industry is so large as to justify the adoption of almost any means to bring about its reduction. Intensive study has shown that faulty methods of hiring and discharging men is the most important factor in labor turnover. Complete control over hiring and discharging by the foreman is a relic of outgrown industrial conditions; centralized hiring permits this work to be put on a scientific basis and also does away with many serious evils that cannot otherwise be reached. Centralized hiring does not impair the authority of the foreman; he hires his men from the employment office and discharges them back to it, instead of from and to the street. The employment manager, being a direct representative of the employer, tends to restore the former relation of direct intercourse between employee and employer that was helpful in avoiding friction between them. Being a specialist, he is able to bring special knowledge and skill to bear upon the task of selling employment in his concern to desirable workmen; lie is also able to give the foreign workman the special attention he requires. Employment managers have been used for the past few years by a number of large organizations, a few of which are engaged in the mining and metallurgical industries. They have invariably reduced labor turnover, in some cases to as little as one-tenth of what it had been. So great a reduction is due in part to other changes made in the light of the data made available by scientific study of the labor problem. In my former paper on personnel work1 I advocated the more general use of the employment manager in mining and metallurgical enterprises as a means of reducing labor turnover. The form of organization recommended seems not be to understood by all, and I have requested the privilege of explaining it at greater length, since it is perhaps the most important factor of all in personnel work, and has a vital influence on the cost sheet of every industrial enterprise.

Microcrystalline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek Formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. This silica is consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries, but is also sought after for many filler/extender uses. Production has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Many of these applications are directly or indirectly related to energy saving factors. As a result of the "energy crisis" and "resin crunch," fillers have received a great deal of renewed attention as a desirable way of stretching the available resin supplies. With feedstocks in short supply and shortages existing in the entire petrochemical industry, the use of bulk materials to improve and extend existing resin is becoming an every increasingly important facet of plastics and coatings technology. Silica is the choise of fillers in applications where inertness, hardness, and low absorption are necessary characteristics. Microcrystalline silica has the additional advantage of being relatively easy to grind because the crude ore is a friable rock composed of tiny crystallites, many less than 0.1 u in diameter. Grinding represents a significant energy input in the production of silica flours. With energy costs increasing rapidly, comparable grades of silica flour made from microcrystalline silica have advanced less in price and it is expected this trend will continue in favor of the microcrystalline silica.

Unmined blocks in the Sewickley seam, surrounded by worked out areas, have been found to transmit overburden oads through the interval strata to the Pittsburgh seam workings 90 ft below. Operating experiences under these conditions are described in this paper. IT has always been understood, in northern West Virginia where both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams are mined, that pillaring or splitting in the lower Pittsburgh seam could break the interval strata and make mining in the overlying Sewickley difficult or impossible. In some instances, however, mining methods practiced in the overlying Sewickley have reversed the problem, resulting in a shifting of the intermediate layer and destroying valuable acreages of the Pittsburgh seam below. The Pittsburgh seam in this area is, on the average, 102 in. thick. About 18 in. of low-quality head coal are left for roof protection as it is mined. Immediately over the coal are two draw slates, two rider seams, and a good hard black shale, locally called black rock, which serves as a permanent roof where draw slates and riders are taken down on certain main haulroads. In most areas mined in this seam in the past the bottom has been satisfactory but soft. However, in areas now being mined by the Christopher Coal Co. in Monongalia County the bottom is very hard and unyielding. The Sewickley seam, lying 85 ft above the Pittsburgh, will average nearly 70 in. in thickness and is overlain by massive shales and sandstones. Much of the seam is mined only down to the "sheep skin," a hard band about 4 in. above the bottom, which is composed of relatively hard shale. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section through the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams in the area being discussed. The thin Redstone seam is not deep-mined but is stripped in some locations where it outcrops. Most of the Sewickley seam in the Morgantown areas has been mined out from 10 to 30 years. There are at present only two large mines and five or six others of small production operating in that seam. Mining systems in the past were generally of the room and pillar type with some full pillar extraction. This seam in the Scott's Run area was operated by as many as thirty or forty different companies at one time, during an era beset with strikes, market failures, and depressions. Most of the barrier pillars along the many main haulroads were abandoned, and blocks of Sewickley coal that would be fully recovered with today's machinery were left unmined when conditions became anything less than favorable. Consequently the mined-out Sewickley is spotted throughout with solid blocks varying in size from 100x100 ft to 200x400 ft and larger. It is these unmined Sewickley blocks surrounded by worked-out portions that have caused transmissions of roof stresses to underlying Pittsburgh mining areas, see Fig. 2, resulting in untold difficulty. As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The first Pittsburgh squeeze attributed to overlying Sewickley blocks occurred in the Arkwright mine, where a shuttle car crew was developing a section consisting of seven panel headings. These entries were being driven in solid coal 3400 ft from the nearest worked-out Pittsburgh area. As mining advanced it was noticed that certain ribs began to slough and certain areas to show signs
