With the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made. to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45' to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the caring behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass Earing BehavioR oF Brass Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (II3)[I12] This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;' Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photo-grams for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. IDO not want to omit anything in which fire or its operation has a part, if I know or can tell it, and have already told you so many other useful, powerful, and ingenious effects (finally of powder and other' fire deadly and very injurious to all living things, indeed, composed for the destruction of those who possess it as well as those who do not) but I do not want the end of my writing to be in tragedy. Therefore I wished to tell you how, from these fires composed of forceful and horrible mate¬rials bringing harm and terror to men, a happy and pleasing effect is also produced and, instead of fleeing from it, the people willingly go to see it. Among others I remember that it was once customary to use these in Florence and in Siena, more than elsewhere. The chief feast day celebrated. by one of these cities is the day of the birth of Saint John, and the other is the Assumption of Our Lady, on the fifteenth of the month of August. In the morning they visit the shrines with great devotion and solemnity, displaying their pomp as much as possible, and later they hunt lions, wild bulls, untamed horses, and many other animals. In the same public squares there was also erected as a decoration an edifice fixed in the ground in the middle of this space, or hanging from a heavy rope crossing between the loftiest points of equal height that could be found in that place. This they have done and still do, and perhaps in time to come will continue to do when opportune. This structure was usually of wood; indeed it is necessary that the latticework of its construction be made only of this. It was covered and en¬larged by tying and fastening hay on top to bring it almost to completion and then papier-mâché was applied. The degree and type of carbide dispersion resulting from changes in the cooling rate from austenite determine the amount of carbon remaining in solution after slow cooling- from a subsequent subcritical annealing treatment. A difjusion model has been proposecl to explain the effect of carbide dispersion on the amount of carbon retained in solution and the amount of carbon in solution has been related to the degree of carbon strain aging. COTTRELL and Leak' have shown that the rate of strain aging in low-carbon steels is dependent upon the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution. Carbon can be effectively removed from solution as Fe , C by quench aging at temperatures of 200" C or lower; however, the relatively higher solubility of nitrogen at these temperatures prevents sufficient removal of nitrogen as iron nitrides. For this reason, nitrogen in solution has been considered the major cause of strain aging in rimming grades of commercial low-carbon steels. Nitrogen can be effectively removed from solution and nonaging steel produced through the addition of aluminum to form the stable nitride, AlN; however, the aluminum also causes deoxidation resulting in a killed steel. III an attempt to produce a rimmed steel which was also nonaging, Morgan and Shyne 2 investigated tile strain-aging properties of low-carban steels containing boron and found that strain aging was suplx-essed in steels containing as little as 0.007 pet B. The original purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism of strain-aging suppression by boron. Early in the study, the function of boron was discovered to be much like that of aluminum in that the formation of a nitride, BN, removed the nitrogen from solution.' However, during the course of the investigation, an effect of heat treatment upon the strain-aging properties and the amount of carbon in solution was found which could be related to the microstructure of the steel. The purpose of this paper is to examine these relationships among heat treatment, microstructure, carbon in solution, and strain aging in steels where nondetectable amounts of nitrogen are present in solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The investigation was carried out using 0.030 in. by 12. in wire specimens which had been cold swaged and drawn to the final diameter. Table I lists the compositions of the low-carbon steels used. One of the most important methods of increasing the hardness of metals is alloying. In spite of the widespread use of alloys, the fundamental mechanism of alloy hardening is little understood. This is true even of the simplest form of alloy, the primary substitutional solid solution in which solute atoms substitute for solvent atoms at random in the crystal lattice of the latter. A fundamental understanding of the mechanism of solid-solution hardening would be important, both because of the widespread use of alloys of this type and because of the light that might be thrown on the mechanism of hardening in more complicated alloys. The present investigation covers the hardness of primary substitutional solid solutions of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic in copper. All of these are B subgroup elements from the third period of the periodic table. Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, and As are in groups I, 11, 111, IV, and V, respectively, and lie just to the right of the transition elements. Because of their cost, it is unlikely that Ga-Cu and Ge-Cu solutions will ever be of commercial importance, but the intent of this study has been to discover some of the fundamentals of solid-sdstion hardening and it has been demonstrated that such a study is far more likely to be fruitful if alloys are made up on the basis of position of the constituent elements in the periodic table than if commercially important alloys are used. Many investigations have been made of the hardness of substitutional solid solutions, but lack of attention to purity of the metals, infrequent grain-size control, and the use of varying testing techniques have virtually invalidated any comparisons. The purpose of most investigations has been to solve immediate problems and not to solve the primary problem: Why do solid solutions usually have a greater hardness than pure metals? Previous Work Theories have been advanced to account for the hardness of solid solutions, but relatively little experimental work has been done. Perhaps the first experimental work of merit was that of Norbury1 on copper alloys. He showed that for several alloys there was a correspondence between the hardness of one atomic per cent solutions and atomic volume of the solutions. More recently Brick, Martin, and Anger2 have investigated the effect of various solute elements on the hardness of copper. They concluded that the hardening effect of these solutes depended "primarily on the difference in atomic volume of solute and solvent or, relatedly, upon the parameter change of the solvent or the extent of solid solubility." They also observed the effect of these elements on hardness and texture developed by rolling and by annealing of rolled material. Austin3 examined the hardness and response to heat-treatment of various iron solid solutions. A modification of Le Claire's microscopic model for self-diffusion is developed in a form suitable for prediction of activation energies for diffusion in disordered substitutional solutions as well as in pure metals Bonding is considered as a localized interaction, and the energy of bonding between atoms of different types is taken as the arithmetic mean of the energies in the pure elements. The activation energies for vacancy formation and migration in substitutional alloys are shown to depend on the empirical constants developed for self-diffusion when the equations are adjusted for the mole fractions of the two elements. The differences in activation energies between alloys and pure metals are calculated and compared with the experimental differences. MaNY different correlations have been proposed for use in predicting activation energies for self-diffusion or diffusion in dilute alloys. Usually theories for self-diffusion cannot be applied to alloys nor can theories for dilute alloys be satisfactorily adapted to self-diffusion. We present here a correlation scheme which can approximate activation energies for diffusion, vacancy formation, and atom migration in substitutional-alloy systems of any concentration. The activation energy for self-diffusion QD has been correlated to the melting temperature Tm,1, 2 the sublimation energy L,,l the heat of fusion Lf,3 crystal structure, and valence.4 Working with mechanical parameters Le claire5 proposed that the activation energy for vacancy migration Qm could be related to appropriate shear moduli. He also proposed that the activation energy for vacancy formation 62, is proportional to Ls. THEORY We consider that Le Claire's expression for 4, is satisfactory. But an alternate expression for Qm in terms of the bulk modulus is just as satisfactory from a theoretical point of view for the prediction of the energy of vacancy migration in pure metals and can more easily be used for alloys. In order for Qm to be a minimum, not only the moving atom but also adjacent and nearby atoms must undergo distortions. These distortions are neither isotropic as is implied by a correlation with the bulk modulus nor unidirectional as implied by a correlation with a shear modulus, but are complex and multidirectional. A complete analysis in terms of the bulk modulus and all the shear moduli is not yet available. In a first approximation in which only one parameter is used, there is no obvious theoretical reason to prefer the shear modulus over the bulk modulus. The bulk modulus is a much more convenient parameter for use in predicting Qm. Shear moduli are known for less than half of the metallic elements while bulk moduli are usually available. Furthermore, because of the directional dependence of shear moduli, their estimation for alloys appears inherently more difficult than is the estimation of bulk moduli. We assume that the bulk modulus Bs reflects an average value of the shear moduli such that the strain energy at the point of maximum distortion of the lattice during vacancy migration can be expressed as

To open the Fisher Hill mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, it was necessary to sink an inclined shaft into the rock and excavate stations, drifts, and ore pockets. This inclined shaft, or slope, q ft. 8 in. high by 28 ft. 2 in. wide, has compartments for two 5-ft. gauge ore-skip tracks of 120-lb. rail, one 5-ft. gauge man-skip track of 60-lb. rail, a concrete stairway, and service pipes consisting of a 12-in. compressed-air line, an 8-in. pump-discharge line, and a 4-in. water-supply line. When we were requested to investigate the work, the progress being made (by another organization) amounted to only 2 ½ ft. advance in 24 hr. We reported that progress of at least 6 ft. per day could be made. As a result, the Defense Plant Corporation, through the Republic Steel [ ] Corporation, entered into a contract with us to sink the shaft. The contract contained a penalty and bonus clause predicated upon an advance of 150 ft. per month. The average advance was 7.8 ft. per day; that in the best six-day week was 60 ft. and that in the best month, 215.5 ft. in 25 working days. The drilling was performed by 3 ½ -in. wet drifter drills mounted on five 8-ft. columns (see accompanying illustration). Even though a full-face drilling and mucking operation is customarily desirable, the steep slope, with the accumulation of water and fine debris at the face, made a modified heading and bench operation preferable. IN 1880, mining operations were commenced at the Copper Queen mine. The famous Queen orebody, which extended to the surface, was first quarried from a large open cut in the outcrop. The orebody was followed down to the 300 level with the Queen incline, and stoped. This, we believe, marks the introduction of square setting in the Bisbee district, which is still the method most generally used. Orebodies The orebodies in the Copper Queen mine occur in the limestones, and the main portion of the ore has been mined from the Abrigo, Martin, and. Escabrosa limestones. While the orebodies outcrop in the extreme western end of the mine, the general dip is to the east and south, at an angle of about 20°, although this dip is not by any means regular, being, in fact, very irregular locally. The ore is remarkable for its variableness in character, some of it being very soft, requiring a large amount of timber, and other portions consisting of extremely hard sulphides. The orebodies, in general, While remarkable for their continuity, are very irregular, both as to shape and size. The mine having been in operation so many years, and mining having been prosecuted over such a large area, the operations have caused the shrinkage of the overburden, and there is a constant movement, which is shown y large cracks and interstices in the surface rocks, which largely contribute to the very high deadwork or maintenance cost of the mine. It is surprising that for year 1913 it cost almost $400,000 just for the one item of repairs and deadwork in this property.

The outstanding features of 1926 in the petroleum industry included the following: 1. Stocks of all oils (crude and refined) were reduced, making the first annual decline since 1918. 2. Domestic crude oil production increased steadily during the last 11 months of the year, accelerating during the fourth quarter, and ending the year at the highest level ever attained. 3. Three new major oil fields were developed—Panhandle, Spindle-top and Seminole. 4. Important advances were registered in production technique, tending to retard the declines of old wells and to maintain the flush periods of new wells. 5. The problem of gaining greater economic control of production through unit operations and gas conservation received growing recognition by the industry and the Federal Oil Conservation Board. 6. The rate of drilling was sharply increased during the second quarter of the year and suffered only a very slight retardation during the closing months. 7. The runs of crude oil to stills were maintained above normal throughout the year and underwent acceleration during the fourth quarter. 8. The gasoline situation was marked by a continuous and substantial increase in the rate of production of cracked gasoline, and by an improvement in the statistical position of the commodity. 9. Prices of both crude petroleum and its principal derivatives were characterized by more profitable levels and greater stability than for a number of years past; and, while showing declines during the fourth quarter, prices did not recede sufficiently to slow down materially either drilling or refinery operations. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the matters of principal interest in connection with work done in the past few years on the purification of the metals of the platinum group, including the study and modification of methods already in the literature and the development of new procedures. For the most part, the results will be given in summary form, reserving the publication of detailed data and directions for a forthcorning paper to be issued by the Bureau of Standards. In recent years increasing interest has been shown in the preparation of the pure platinum metals, both by those concerned with the manufacture of the metals and their alloys for scientific and industrial purposes and those who are engaged in the study of the chemical or physical properties of the elements. The purification of the metals usually has been regarded as a matter so involved and difficult as to require the attention of specialists. It is hoped that this paper will show that any of the metals can be prepared in any desired degree of purity by relatively simple straightforward chemical methods. For the most part, it is thought that the methods given are suitable for small-scale refineries as well as for the laboratory; also, that they will bring the time required for the purification of any of the metals within reasonable limits. The new procedure suggested for purifying platinum should prove to be much shorter than any methods described in the literature. Treatment of Platinum Ore As is well known, the principal source of the platinum metals is a mixture of several native alloys of the metals, found chiefly in naturally concentrated deposits in stream beds or alluvial material. The widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the stronges nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-A1 and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improrcmc~nts in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those reahzed from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties arc obtaincd with beryllium contents averagirlg about one-half the amount reqnired in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibriun relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The data were collected by means of quenching experiments, microscopic examination and thermal analysis The results of some powder-method X-ray determiniations on the alloys, conducted by Mr. William Mikulas and Prof. Lars Thomassen at the University of Michigan, are used as evidence in this paper. CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite.

Observations of ground behavior in mining the Choka Dulkan ore body have been described. Ore recovery was limited to approximately 60% because unconsolidated hydraulic fill did not permit either the widening of stope spans nor secondary ore recovery from pillars. Stope undercutting induced high stress concentrations. However, as extraction progressed, ground conditions improved but before extraction was complete they deteriorated again. After completion of a stope, the remnant rib and crown pillars continued to be deformed by other stresses for some time.

Laboratory experiments on the reverse combustion of tar sands in a linear adiabatic system have shown that a highly upgraded oil can be produced from an exceedingly viscous, immobile oil. The dependence on the air-injection rate of peak temperature, combustion-zone velocity, oil recovery, air-oil ratio, residual coke and oil, fuel burned and distribution of product gases is shown graphically. Eflects of initial temperature, oxygen concentration, oil saturation and heat loss are discussed. Experiments bearing on the coking properties of heavy oils are mentioned and some results exhibited. Field application of the process hinges on the existence of adequate air permeability and the rate of reaction under reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION It has been established that oil can be recovered from underground reservoirs by means of at least two fundamentally distinct methods involving in situ combustion of a certain fraction of the oil. Characteristic of both of these known methods is the production of oil from one or more wells by means of hot gases formed when a high-temperature reaction zone is advanced through the reservoir. In both cases, the reaction zone is created by heating certain of the wells to a sufficiently high temperature prior to the introduction of air, and the zone is maintained and advanced through the reservoir by appropriate control of the air-injection rate. In the first of these methods, which is called "forward combustion",' the combustion zone advances in a direction which is generally the same as that of the air flow; whereas in the second method, "reverse combustion",' the combustion zone moves in a direction generally opposite to that of the air flow. Forward combustion, on the one hand, is an ideal combustion process in the sense that a minimum of the most undesirable fraction of the oil is consumed as fuel in the form of coke, a clean sand is left behind and generated heat is used as efficiently as possible. However, the applicability of forward combustion is limited. Since the products of combustion, vaporized oil and connate water must flow into relatively cold regions of the reservoir, there is an upper limit on the viscosity of oil which can be moved by this process in a practical and economical fashion.' On the other hand, it is characteristic of reverse combustion that the vaporized oil and water together with the products of combustion are produced through sand which is already hot and has had its mobile liquid content eliminated. This means there is no upper limit on oil viscosity; indeed, the oil may be an entirely immobile semi-solid. However, fuel for the process is an intermediate fraction of the original oil, and the most undesirable fraction remains on the sand surface as a substantial deposit of coke. Since this coked material is not burned during reverse combustion, it represents energy which is available for the production of oil but is not used for this purpose. It follows that one can expect economics to be somewhat less attractive with reverse combustion than with forward combustion. Nevertheless, it is a process which is designed for reservoirs where forward combustion is impossible and, as such, has become a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. In this paper, only experiments made with tar sands are discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS We proceed, then, to consider the process of reverse combustion in greater detail. Fig. 1 illustrates a temperature profile defining a combustion zone which moves from right to left when air flows from left to right. In Zone 1, the temperature is the initial reservoir temperature, and the tar sand is as yet unaltered. This statement must be modified to the extent that physical properties of the oil may be changed by low-temperature oxidation at reservoir temperature. As air passes into Zone 2, which has been warmed by conduction, it assists in vaporization of the very light ends (if there are any), and oxidation occurs at a significant rate. In this region, there is almost no production of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide because predominantly addition-type reactions take place with the formation of oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes and acids together with water. Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants.
