W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such' information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. In previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravitational forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and prototype material are the same and the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at hill and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may therefore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. A fatigue study in completely reversed axial tension-compression has been perforried on high-purity titanium and on three high-purity alloys of titanium. The alloys each contain approxi7nately 0.75 at. pct of a single interstitial element; carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, respectivley. The results corroborate a previously published theory which proposed that strain aging under alternating stress was responsible for the fatigue limit behavior of certain alloys. The present data indicate that in these alloys an increasing strain-talline aging effect under alternating stress is provided by oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, respectively. CURRENT research on the nature of the fatigue limit in metals suggests that the presence of a fatigue limit in metallic materials is a manifestation of strain aging that occurs under alternating stress.lm5 A comprehensive theoretical model based on the above hypothesis has been developed to explain the existence of a fatigue limit.' This model also provides increased insight into several other fatigue phenomena as under stressing, overstressing, and coaxing effects. The theory, as well, provides equal understanding for those cases where no real fatigue limit is observed. Briefly, this theory assumes that the S-N curve for a pure metal is a smooth function of the applied stress, and the effect of adding an element that is soluble (or forms a precipitate) in the pure metal is simply to shift the S-N curve to the right. If the added element confers the power to strain age, the result is a further shift of the S-N curve, this time upward and to the right. Since strain aging is not expected to be a strong function of stress, and since damage per cycle is known to be quite stress dependent, it is to be expected that there will be some limiting lower stress at which the strengthening due to strain aging will balance the damage due to crack propagation. This stress is the fatigue limit. The position of the fatigue-limit knee was thought to be a function of the magnitude of the strain-aging effect on both the finite and infinite life portions of the S-N curve. Although the strain aging hypothesis seems to be reasonably valid for bcc materials,2'6 it needed to be tested for both fcc and cph metals. This report is the first of a series concerning the fatigue-limit behavior of titanium with varying amounts of the interstitial solutes (C, N,, and 4) that are known to cause static strain aging in titanium. Yield-point effects have been reported for polycrys-talline high-purity titanium alloys containing either carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen.7'9 These effects were observed at testing temperatures in the range 100 to 300'. In addition yield-point and strain-aging effects have been reported for single crystals of titanium containing 0.1 wt pct C plus N.' These yield points were observed over a wide temperature range, but no room-temperature aging occurred. Aging at 180' was required to cause the return of the yield point. The magnitude of the yield phenomena in titanium containing interstitials is not expected to be as large as is observed in bcc metals because of several factors. Titanium has a very high chemical affinity for oxygen and nitrogen. The thermodynamic stability of solutions of oxygen or nitrogen in titanium is recognized. Lattice parameter measurements of titanium containing arbon, oxygen,1° or nitrogen" show that the "c" parameter is expanded more than the "a" parameter, but that up to about 2 wt pct this results in an insignificant change of the axial ratio 'c/a." Ehrlich" has shown that the sites occupied by interstitial atoms in titanium are spherically symmetrical and therefore a lattice expansion, at a constant c/a ratio, results in a simple dilation of the interstitial site. Such a dilation involving no shear has been shown to react only with edge components of dislocations.13 This causes only a weak pinning action. Shear stresses would be anticipated locally when only one of the two interstitial positions was occupied. The carbon atom will cause a symmetrical distortion of the lattice whereas the oxygen and nitrogen atoms have, in addition, the previously mentioned chemical affinity of titanium for these elements. These factors will result in a considerably smaller reduction of free energy upon the association of interstitial atoms with dislocations, and therefore a much weaker pinning than has been observed for the bcc metals. These considerations would lead to the hypothesis that of the interstitial elements considered here carbon would cause the strongest pinning effect in titanium where the amount of interstitial in solution is constant. This hypothesis will be borne out in the analysis of the present results.

In the spring of 1878 the Pine Grove Furnace, located in Cumberland County, Pa., was blown in after lying idle for several years. The fnrnace was constructed in 1770, and for over a century it has been in almost continual operation. The plant consisted in 1877, when the writer was first called there, of a stone stack 32 feet in height, inclosing a shaft and boshes, the latter being 8 feet in diameter. The blast was supplid by two wooden blowing-tubs discharging into a third, having a floating piston sustaining a box weighted to give the desired pressure, the power being furnished by a waterwheel. A small 18-pipe hot-blast stove heated the blast. The furnace was remodelled during the winter of'77-78, and a Weimer blowing-engine with a blowing-tub 5 feet in diameter and 2 feet stroke, and the necessary boilers, were substituted for the wooden tubs and water-wheel. The stack was raised and enlarged, and provided with a bell and hopper having a central drop. Water dam and tymp were added, and general repairs were made. The hot oven, however, was not increased. The furnace had always been operated with charcoal as fuel, and its reconstruction was made with a view to continue the use of charcoal, but provision was made for ample blowing capacity should other fuels at any time be employed. Although liberal arrangements had been made in cutting wood, the stock of charcoal supplied in 1878 was insufficient for the increased requirements of the remodelled plant, and notwithstanding the purchase of some 80,000 bushels from an adjacent idle furnace, there war: riot enough to keep the furnace in constant blast until a new supply could be obtained, particularly as the season was unusually backward. Instead of following the established precedent of many charcoal furnace managers, i. e., blow out every February, it was detemined to continue in blast, using coke as fuel. Accordingly, when the charcoal stock was exhansted, on March 22d, 1879, Connellsville coke was substituted, the change of fuel being made at once; that is, the coke charges followed immediately upon the last charcoal charges. After working a few days, the strike in the Connellsville coke region cut of the supply, and anthracite coal was obtained, a mixture of the two fuels being employed. The strike continuing,

PART I-PREPARATION OP METALLIC SINGLE CRYSTALS WITH ESPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINGLE CRYSTALS OP ZINC? As metals and alloys are composed, of, an aggregate of allotriomorphic crystals or grains, each possessing an individual orientation, the physical characteristics of a metal or an alloy are closely related to the properties of the individual crystals. The preparation and study of single metallic crystals are, therefore, matters of considerable importance. The advent of the X-ray spectrograph as a valuable metallurgical tool has magnified the importance of this subject, because the interpretation of some X-ray spectrographs is difficult unless single crystals are used in these studies. PREVIOUS WORK The first paper, as far as the writer knows, on the behavior or preparation of single crystals of metals is by Baker.1 He describes the behavior of extruded wires of sodium and potassium. These wires, when pulled in tension, instead of I showing the usual conical fracture common to most metals, had a chisel-shaped fracture when they were broken. I and II, Fig. 1, have a similar fracture. Baker checked his results by preparing single crystal wires from molten sodium and potassium and observing their properties. He prepared the wires by filling glass tubes, under oil, with the molten metal. The surfaces of the strained wires showed slip bands of remarkable clearness of which photographs are shown in his paper. He concluded that these wires were single crystals and "that the portions of the metal brought into play are cubes. Such cubes, when placed so that a plane through 'two opposite edges was parallel to the axis of the wire, would allow of lateral contraction by faces gliding over one another in one direction only and not in the direction at right angles."

The new valves described in this article are the latest product of the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. Some of them are still in the laboratory stage, others have already found important applications. Some of the larger ones, which have graduated from the laboratory, are waiting for their apprenticeship in industry, there to refine their frailties and complete their preparation as electrical servants. The career that awaits them, though dimly foreseen, appears fascinating. And as surely as history repeats itself, scenes still more romantic, now beyond the horizon, will unfold as we approach them. This is the romance of science. Counting Electrons Let the smallest tube lead the march of review. It is a special Pliotron, designed to measure currents smaller than any yet detected. It goes by the unromantic name of Pliotron FP-54. Fig. 1 shows this miniature tube—miniature in performance rather than size, for it is the size of an ordinary radio receiving tube. Its appearance has nothing distinctive, except the quartz beads above and below the plate, which support the grid. They minimize insulation leakage. In principle, the FP-54 is like any grid-controlled high-vacuum electron tube; but in structure and operating characteristics it is entirely special. An extra "space-charge" grid, maintained at 3 volts positive with respect to the filament, holds back the small but pernicious current of positive ions emitted by the filament; the normal plate voltage is 6 volts, grid bias 3 volts, thoriated-tungsten filament temperature 1700" K., plate current 40 microamperes. These conditions are essential to the avoidance of grid-currents, which may consist not only of insulation leakage and positive ions from the hot filament and from residual gases, but of high-speed electrons from the filament, photo emission from the grid due to the light of the filament, and electron emission caused by X-rays generated by the impact of electrons on the plate.

DESPITE almost fifty years of commercial practice, the sintering of iron ore has received little fundamental study. Much of the theoretical work1-'has dealt with the constitution of sinter produced under widely varying conditions. While these studies have broadened our knowledge of the changes that occur in the sintering zone and in the freshly formed sinter during the early stages of cooling, they provide little insight into the changes that precede the formation of sinter. These preliminary changes merit study as a part of the overall process. Hessle. working with beds of Swedish magnetite concentrates, was one of the first investigators to study the sintering process in its entirety. On the basis of temperatures observed at various levels of the bed during sintering, he postulated a number of distinct reaction zones to account for the chemical changes leading to the formation of sinter. A more direct method of attack is that of arresting the sintering zone after it has progressed part way through the bed. A study of a vertical cross section through such a quenched bed provides direct information on the changes taking place at various levels. This method was used by McBriar et al.' to show that several well-defined zones of chemical change existed within beds that were typical of British sintering practice. The same general method of attack was developed independently in the present investigation to study partially sintered beds typical of American practice. Experimental Sintering Equipment The sintering operation was carried out on an experimental scale with the equipment shown in Fig. 1. The refractory-walled sintering chamber A was 11 in. deep and averaged 9 in. in diameter. Air was introduced through a tapered flow section B, which contained the orifice C for accurate metering of the incoming air. This section was located directly above the square ignition housing D, which in turn rested upon the sintering chamber A. The bed was ignited with burner E. The required suction for the operation was furnished by a fan F, which had an air capacity of 500 cfm (stp). Hot exhaust gases from the sintering chamber were cleaned in the dustcatcher G before entering the exhaust fan. In the study of partially sintered beds, it was essential to find some technique for removing the entire charge from the sintering pot without disarranging the unsintered bottom portion. This problem was finally solved by sintering the charge in a removable basket, which snugly fitted the sintering chamber. This basket was constructed of two thicknesses of window screen and was lined with a 3/16-in. layer of asbestos paper. The bottom of the basket consisted of two thicknesses of wire screen, which were fastened to the basket wall. For high fuel mixtures, additional insulation was provided by a somewhat thicker layer of asbestos cement. Preparation of Partially Sintered Mixtures The moist feed was carefully placed in the sintering basket, to prevent segregation of the particles, which varied widely in size and composition. A thermocouple was placed in the center of the basket with the hot junction halfway down, and the mixture was evenly distributed around it. During ignition and throughout the sintering of the upper half of the bed, the hot junction temperature increased very little. When the sintering zone reached the halfway point, as indicated by the sudden increase in the hot junction temperature, the charge was quenched. During quenching the suction was turned off and the orifice was tightly stoppered to prevent further influx of air. At the same time, nitrogen was admitted to the sintering chamber through the orifice tap. As soon as the nitrogen had displaced the air and products of combustion, the charge was removed from the sintering pot for immediate dissection. It is impossible to preserve the exact zone structure of the bed at the instant that combustion is arrested unless the downward transmission of heat is also immediately stopped. Fortunately, heat transfer is very slow in beds containing a stationary fluid, especially if the particle size is small. It follows that the minimum quantity of nitrogen should be used to displace the air and that static conditions be established as soon as possible. An investigation of the Cr-Mo-Ni ternary system and attendant binaries has been completed. Some changes in the binary diagrams are shown to be necessary. The 1250°C section of the ternary and the liquidus surface have been delineated. A system of invariant reactions existing above 1250°C has been suggested. BECAUSE chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are important not only as bases for alloying systems but also as major alloying additions for other refractory metals, a study of the phase diagrams is of great interest and importance. In addition there are interesting features of theoretical value, a number of which are of prime consideration in this work. The major aim was to determine the ternary phase diagram of these metals at and above 1250°C, with sufficient attention given to lower temperatures to permit an understanding of the conditions existing at 1250°C and above. To understand ternary systems it is essential that accurate information concerning the binary systems be available, which in turn presupposes thorough knowledge of the constituent elements. On the basis of this investigation not only were significant inaccuracies indicated in the binary systems but much consideration had to be given to one of the elements, that is, chromium. The observation has been made that chromium undergoes a crystal transformation at a temperature near its melting point. Much of the experimental data leading to the detection of this transformation and the effects of this hypothesis on the form of the Cr-Ni phase diagram have already been reported' . and will not be repeated here. The experimental methods employed in the investigation have also been covered.'-" he purity of the molybdenum utilized in this work showed by qualitative spectrographic analysis that chromium, copper, iron, silicon, and tungsten were present in quantities of 0.1 to 0.001 wt pct. During the course of the investigation more than 100 melts were made, weighing from 150 to 200 grams each. Each of these melts was sectioned for chemical analysis and for specimens for examination in the as-cast and various heat-treated conditions by X-ray and metallographic means. All X-ray diffraction patterns reproduced here were made using chromium Ka radiation although iron and copper targets were used on occasions during the investigation. Experimental Results Mo-Ni-System: The most recent comprehensive investigation of the Mo-Ni system was made by Ellinger' in 1942; the diagram as shown in the American Society for Metals Handbook is based on his work. The work done on the system in this investigation substantiated the general form of the diagram although some differences were observed. These are indicated by a comparison of Ellinger's diagram and Fig. 1, the latter showing the results of pertinent thermal analyses made in this research. The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

LONG before the role of dislocations in the plastic deformation of crystals was recognized, the stress-strain field around dislocations received considerable attention in the theory of elasticity. It seems that Weingarten1 was the first to consider dislocations as simple and typical sources of internal stress in elastic solids, and Volterra2 and Timpe3 investigated their elastic field. Fig 3-1 shows the two basic types of dislocations considered by Volterra. The first arises by making a straight-edged .plane cut in a solid, displacing the two surfaces of the cut in their own plane relatively to one another by a constant amount in a direction perpendicular to the edge, and welding them together; this is shown in Fig 3-la, where the outer cylindrical surface represents the boundary of the solid, and the thin spiral cylinder around the edge of the cut has been removed in order to avoid infinities of stress and strain. The second type of dislocation is shown in Fig 3-lb; here the surfaces of the cut have been displaced relatively to one another by a constant amount parallel to the edge, and then welded together. After J. M. Burgers,4 these two types are called edge and screw dislocations, respectively. They represent simple limiting cases; in the general case, the surfaces of the cut are displaced by a constant vector that lies in the plane of the surface but has components both parallel and perpendicular to the edge of the cut. The problem of selection of the active slip systems for a crystal undergoing an arbitrary strain was analyzed by Taylor and by Bishop and Hill in terms of a minimum (internal) and a maximum (external) work criterion, respectively. These two criteria have now been generalized to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (noncrystallographic) pencil glide. The generalized treatment also takes into account the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening among the shear systems, which were considered in the Bishop and Hill work. Optimization techniques of linear and nonlinear programming are shown to be applicable for the numerical calculation of the minimum or maximum work. In the case of crystallographic shear, the constraint functions are linear and hence the optimal work is obtained as the saddle value of the lagrangian function Wi(y) e minimum and W,(u) + (a) for the maximum, where Wi is the (internal) work, We is the (external) work, Y is the crystallographic shear strain, u is the applied stress, and and are constraints. It is shown that the Lagrangians are functionally the same and the saddle value of one problem is identical to the saddle value of the other, proving that the two analyses are completely equivalent. In the case of pencil glide, although the constraint functions are nonlinear and neither convex nor concave, the equivalence of the optimal values to the saddle value of the Lagrangian (which is again identical for both problems) is still valid. WHEN a crystal deforms plastically by crystallographic shear, five independent shears are generally required to accommodate five independent strain components specifying the deformation. Assuming slip as the only shear mechanism, Taylor1 in 1938 analyzed the deformation in terms of a minimum work criterion. He hypothesized that of all combinations of five slip systems which are capable of accommodating the deformation, the active combination is that one for which the internal work C is a minimum, where 1 TI is the critical resolved shear stress for slip on the 1-th slip system and is the corresponding simple shear. By further assuming equal 72 for all equivalent slip systems and no Bauschinger effect, Taylor re- duced the minimum work problem to one of minimum and applied the analysis to the case of axisym- Metric flow by {111}(110) slip in fcc crystals. However, he did not consider the question of whether the resolved shear stress has in fact attained the critical value for slip on the newly found active systems without exceeding it on the inactive systems. In 1951 Bishop and ill' put forth the maximum work analysis in which slip is again assumed as the only deformation mechanism. In this analysis, the work o1 done in a given strain ij by a stress ujj not violating the yield condition is maximized. In addition, the analysis takes into account the possibility that the critical resolved shear stress for slip may not be equal among the slip systems and that the slip behavior may exhibit the Bauschinger effect. As with Taylor, a single set of slip systems—{111)(110) — was analyzed numerically. It thus appears that the Bishop and Hill treatment is on a more sound physical basis than the Taylor treatment. However, Bishop and Hill showed that where there is equal hardening among all slip systems and when there is no Bauschinger effect, Eq. [11 ] of Ref. 2, as assumed by Taylor, the results of their maximum work analysis are the same as those of Taylor's minimum work analysis. Hence at least under those conditions there is an implication that the Taylor analysis does lead to a critical resolved shear stress for slip on the predicted active systems without violating the yield condition on the inactive systems. Recently, the Taylor analysis was applied for numerical solutions of the axisymmetric flow problem, for slip on {110}(111), {112}(111). {123)(111) systems as well as a mixture of all three sets of svstems."1 Computational techniques based on the optimization theories of linear and nonlinear programming4 were employed in these solutions. The same techniques were employed in the solutions of an axisymmetric flow problem of deformation by slip on (111) (110) systems and twinning on (111)(112) systems5 which had been considered theoretically from a modified Taylor approach. The utilization of these techniques has led to the realization that the solutions of Taylor's minimum work problem imply the solutions of Bishop and Hill's maximum work problem. The two problems turn out to be dual problems in the well known sense of mathematical programming. It is thus the purpose of this paper to first generalize the minimum and maximum work analyses to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (non-crystallographic) pencil glide, as well as the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening

WORK described herein was undertaken with the aim of determining some of the physical-chemical properties of electrolytes suitable for the electrodeposition of pure zirconium metal. In this paper the phase diagram, vapor pressure, and activities in the melt are considered. In a companion paper,' the electrolytic conductivity of some of these melts is reported. The melts studied were mixtures of NaCl and/or KC1 with ZrC1,. Chloride melts were chosen for study because 1) if the electrolyte is to be useful for industrial electrodeposition of zirconium, the chlorides will be preferred to the relatively costly bromides and iodides; 2) fluoride melts were being studied in another laboratory (Horizons Inc., Cleveland); and 3) melts containing oxygen, in any form, are unsuitable for preparation of pure zirconium, because of the great affinity of this metal for oxygen. Unlike electrodeposition from aqueous solution, the fundamental behavior of fused-salt electrolysis is poorly understood. In most cases, such basic electrochemical information as the phase diagram of the melt system, activities in the melt, conductivity, the nature of the current-carrying ions, the equilibrium electrode potentials, and the overvoltage behavior of the electrodes is unknown to the researcher who would develop a new electrodeposition process employing a fused salt. This research project was designed to supply information about some of these basic physical-chemical properties so that an intelligent choice of electrolyte for electrodeposition studies could be made. Experimental The experimental difficulties-encountered in this work result from the properties of zirconium metal and ZrC1,. ZrC1, is a solid which sublimes at 334°C. It is rapidly hydrolyzed by moist air to HC1, ZrOCl,, and ZrO,. Unusual precautions were exercised in this work to prevent hydrolysis of ZrC1, and rigidly to exclude oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon from the melts under study. These elements are known to react with and contaminate zirconium metal. All melts were studied in vacuum systems, i.e., in the presence of ZrC1, vapor only. Transfer of ZrC1, to or from the melts was accomplished entirely by vacuum sublimation. In this way, neither the melts nor the ingredients thereof were permitted to

It seems unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remark-able operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to analyze theoretically the partisl-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9° Be. North Texas crude. The chart is illustrative of batch distillation. Theoretically, if the oil were heated by a single flash in a pipe still, the partial-pressure effect of the light products would result in the removal of the same amount of vapors at a lower temperature. Practically, we find that because of the necessarily extensive fractionating equipment required when separating many products all in vapor phase, the oil has to enter the separator at temperatures corresponding to or even above those required in the batch still. Furthermore, in single-flash distillation the vapors evolved in the heater must be superheated to the outlet temperature. Very little is

I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTIONS APPEARANCE, AND RELATIONS MINING in Butte has seldom encountered covellite in commercial quantities. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,1 it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. Inclusions of MnS and Fe3C have been introduced into single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe to study their effects on recrystallization behavior and textures after cold rolling and annealing. The presence of MnS in (110) [001] and (111)[112] crystals inhibited primary grain growth and promoted secondary recrystallization but did not alter the texture significantly after annealing at 1200°C. The presence of Fe3C in (llO)[OOl] and (100)[001] crystals caused a refinement of the primary re crystallized grain size but did not promote secondary recrystallization. THE texture behavior of single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe during deformation and recrystallization has been studied by numerous investigators. The early work of Dunn&apos; followed by Decker and Harker2 involved relatively small cold reductions. More detailed studies of Dunn3&apos;4 and of Dunn and Koh5&apos;6 involved a reduction of 70 pct and recrystallization at 980°C for several crystals. Walter and Hibbard7 studied a greater variety of initial orientations and sought to relate the textures to those of polycrystalline material. Attention was focused on the nucleation process during early stages of annealing and on surface energy effects in studies by Walter and Dunn8 and by HU.9&apos;10 One of the most extensive investigations has been reported by T. Taoka, E. Furubayashi, and S. Takeuchi.11 Most of this work has been conducted using relatively pure crystals with minimal amounts of precipi-tate-forming elements such as carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. Recently, however, S. Taguchi and A. Sakakura have observed that AIN precipitates can alter the recrystallization textures of rolled (100)[001] crystals.12 The present studies were initiated to determine effects of MnS and Fe3C precipitates on recrystalli-zation and grain growth behavior of rolled single-crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe. Both of these types of inclusions play significant roles in the recrystallization behavior leading to the formation of the (110)[001] or cube-on-edge texture in commercial grain-oriented silicon iron. It is well known that (110)[001] primary grains are formed by recrystallization of (110)[001] or (11 l)[ 112] crystals after cold reduction of about 60 pct or more. Crystals of these orientations, therefore, were selected for study of the effect of MnS in-clusions on grain growth. On the other hand, a major component of the texture of cold-rolled, polycrystal-line 3 pct Si-Fe is the (100)[011] orientation. The function of Fe3,C inclusions is of interest for this orientation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals used are listed in Table I and were obtained from commercial Si-Fe alloy processed to produce (110)[001] and (100)[001] texture by secondary growth. The cube-on-edge material was 0.59 mm thick. Suitably large (110)[001] crystals 25 mm wide were selected and their orientations were determined using an optical goniometer. Etch pits for texture determination were formed by a ferric sulfate solution. The other crystals used in the study with (100)[001], (100)[011], and (111)[112] orientations were obtained from sheet which contained large grains developed from secondary recrystallization by a surface-energy driving force.13 Most crystals had a (100) plane very nearly parallel to the sheet surface and the rolling direction could be selected readily. The same sheet also contained a few crystals with (111) planes parallel to the sheet surface, these also being a result of growth by surface energy. The crystals selected from the sheet were about 25 mm wide and 0.25 to 0.28 mm thick. As shown in Table 11, the crystals already contained about 0.070 to 0.10 pct Mn. Cold working of iron-carbon alloys was found to increase greatly the hydrogen solubility and to decrease the diffusivity at temperatures up to 400° C. These effects are increasing functions of both the carbon content and the degree of deformation. The hydrogen behavior is consistent with the idea that cotd working creates "traps", which are concluded to be microcracks in which the hydrogen is chemisorbed. Hydrogen embrittlement is explained by the Petch theory of metal crack surface energy loss due to hydrogen adsorption. HYDROGEN embrittlement of steel has been studied for many years and has been the subject of an extensive literature, but the mechanism of the effect has not been completely understood. The embrittlement is unusual in that the ductility loss is not accompanied by an increase of the yield strength, being primarily a decrease of the fracture strength alone. The loss of fracture strength is usually most severe in the temperature range between 0°and 100°C. Here the solubility of hydrogen in the iron lattice at ordinary H2 pressures is extremely low while the diffusivity is still quite high. From the relationships between the ductility and the hydrogen content, test temperature and strain rate, it is apparent that the hydrogen atoms causing the ductility loss difbse to and concentrate in small regions of the metal which are especially susceptible to the initiation and propagation of fracture. This hydrogen segregation apparently occurs after plastic straining has begun. Below 0°C the ductility loss persists only at low strain rates in confirmation of the view that the embrittlement is diffusion .controlled. The tendency of the embrittlement to disappear above 100°C can be explained by the increasing lattice solubility of hydrogen with rising temperature. A common view of hydrogen embrittlement of steel is that the hydrogen initially dissolved in the metal lattice diffuses to structural discontinuities and there precipitates as H2 gas at very high pressures which assist the external stress in causing premature failure.1,2 The idea of a high H2 pressure in equilibrium with ordinary amounts of hydrogen in steel at room temperature is due to observations of hydrogen behavior in fully annealed material, for which the Sieverts&apos; law constant relating solute concentration to H2 pressure is extremely small. Hydrogen-embrittled steel, however, is always plastically deformed to some extent, and therefore it is important that hydrogen embrittlement be explained primarily in terms of hydrogen behavior in plastically deformed material. Such an explanation is attempted in this paper. Previous studies of hydrogen in cold-worked steel have shown that both the solubility and the diffusion rate are significantly chaned when the steel is cold worked. Darken and Smith discovered that the amount of hydrogen absorbed from acid by cold-rolled steel at 35°C is many times greater than that absorbed by hot-rolled steel. They found also that the hydrogen permeability of the steel is unaffected by cold working. Keeler and Davis4 confirmed the high apparent solubility of hydrogen in cold-worked iron-carbon alloys at temperatures up to and even beyond the recrystallization temperature. They also found that this solubility increase accompanying cold work is a sensitive function of the carbon content, being absent when no carbon is present. The present experimental study was undertaken primarily to obtain an improved understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in cold-worked steel. Data were obtained on the effects of temperature, H, pressure, carbon content, and degree of cold work on the hydrogen solubility and diffusivity in iron-carbon alloys. These data have been helpful in elucidating the nature of the cold-worked steel structure as well as in providing information on the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement of steel. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical specimens for hydrogen absorption and diffusion rate measurements were prepared from three iron-carbon binary alloys and a commercial SAE 1010 steel. The iron-carbon alloys were prepared by vacuum melting electrolytic iron with graphite in a magnesia crucible. The alloys were cast in vacuum as 2 1/2-in. sq ingots weighing about 20 lb each. The ingots were hot rolled (above 1900°F) to 5/8-in.-diam round bars and then cooled in air to room temperature. The resulting metallographic structure consisted of islands of fine pearlite surrounded by free ferrite. Chemical analyses of the materials are given in Table I. The 5/8-in. diam bars were turned to diameters such that cold reduction to the desired final specimen diameters would result in either 30 or 60 pct reduction in area (RA).
