IT is a common observation that the improvements introduced in practice since the first announcement of the cyanide process have been almost entirely mechanical. Although a good deal of study and research has been devoted to the chemical problems involved, the results obtained appear trifling in comparison. Few of the suggested modifications in the chemical treatment have come into practical use and those only in limited fields. Nevertheless, if we study the recent history of the cyanogen compounds from a somewhat broader standpoint, we shall find that considerable additions have been made, not only to our knowledge of their chemical properties, but also to their applications for industrial purposes. The present review of these advances naturally falls into two divisions: (1) processes involved in the treatment of ores; (2) manufacture of cyanides and other related compounds. PART I. ADVANCES IN THE CHEMISTRY OF ORE TREATMENT BY CYANIDE In the attempt to extend the scope of the process, various ores have been encountered which contain gold and silver in such forms that they will not yield satisfactorily to ordinary methods of cyanide treatment. . In some cases the difficulty is due to the excessive action on the solution of base metals present in the ore; in others, to the occurrence of minerals such as dyscrasite (the native alloy of antimony and silver), or a supposed oxidized manganese compound containing silver, which are either altogether insoluble in or very slightly attacked by cyanide. A particularly troublesome case is that of the so-called "graphitic" ores, containing carbon in some form which has the property of precipitating gold and silver already dissolved.

Since its introduction to the petroleum industry in 1949 by Clark,1 hydraulic fracturing or "hydrafracing" has developed into a widely respected and useful technique for increasing production from petroleum reservoirs. Even then, Clark described production increases of from 6 to 100 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Since that time, others have described treatments in which production increased from 12 to 456 bopd, from only a show to 40 bopd;2 from 48 to 219 bopd; 3 from 500 to 1400 bopd and from a show to 192 bopd.4 Although representative of only a few of many successful hydraulic fracturing operational6 these increases in production attest to the past and potential value of the hydrafracing technique to the petroleum industry. The technique has received a considerable amount of theoretical and experimental attention.1, 5-20 Unfortunately, however, the degree of general understanding of the mechanics of hydraulic fracturing is still inadequate to solve many recurring problems. The practicing engineer is plagued with difficulties in predicting such factors as: (1) the required pressure and viscosity of the fracturing fluid to not only induce the fracture but to control the extent of its growth, (2) the strength characteristics and amount of proppant to include in the fluid so that the fracture is held open once the fluid pressure is decreased, and (3) the volume of the reservoir influenced by the induced fractures and the resulting increase in production. A major cause of these difficulties is the uncertainty associated with determining the orientation of the hydraulically induced fractures. One's natural conclusion in considering the problem is that the orientation of the fracture would depend on several variables, as, for example, the relationship between the viscosity and injection rate of the fluid and the

THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. Although wildcatting was hampered by the general overproduction and low price of crude, several developments, worthy of note in the history of the petroleum industry in the Rocky Mountain region, were made in 1927. This district records production from six new fields, two of these having been heretofore productive of gas. Deeper pay horizons were found in two other oil fields. In order to facilitate transportation from fields, six new oil pipe lines were completed or in the course of construction at the end of the year, and one line is proposed for 1928. Four gas lines were completed, one was under construction, and one was proposed for 1928. The total production in 1927 in the Rocky Mountain district was 29,591,379 bbl.,' a decrease of 7,771,991 bbl., or 21 per cent., fro111 the previous year. This was occasioned by natural decline and the general curtailment of production and drilling. A review of the development by states follows. Colorado Production from horizons in the Morrison and Sundance at Craig and at Ilrs Dome, and the bringing in of the deepest producing well in the Rocky Mountain district on North McCalluin anticline (Waltlrn) in Jackson County are the outstanding developments for the year in Colorado. In March the Midwest Refining Co.'s Parkinson 21 SD, SW SE, Sec. 22 T p. 4 N R 92 W, Iles Domr, Moffat County Colorado, found gas in sands in the Morrison estimated at 15,000,000 cu. ft., and at 3242 ft. an oil sand was encountered in the Sundance. Initial production from this horizon was 2575 bbl. in this well. This structure previously was only productive of water in the sands of the Dakota group but has been producing shale oil from horizons in the Benton. The second well completed by the Midwest Refining Co., No. 18 SD in Sec. 23 was also productive of gas in the Morrison and made an initial of 300 bbl. from sands in the Sundance. The hump behavior has since been found to occur in many other fields. The cause, however, is not the mine in all cases. In some of these the hump is trace-ahie to leaks in the tnbing which allow influx from the annulus after closing-in. In other cases the hump is traceable to leaks in the device separating pay horizons in dually completed wells. It is concluded that the recording of both surface and bottom-hole pressures is desirable in wells which show an anomalous build-up behavior. A number of field examples is discussed where use of both sets of measurements enables the cause for anomalous behavior to he found, (and a reasonable interpreation of bottom-hole pressure to be made. INTRODUCTION Theoretically the pressure build-up in an infinite reser-voir should be a linear function of In [(t + at)/nere t is the production time and At a the closed-in time. Some of the variations from this behavior arc well known, such as the curved portion immediately after shut-in which results from after-production and skin effect, and the flattened end portion which results from boundary effects in a limited reservoir. The effect of stratified producing zones and irregular geometrical drainage patterns may also contribute unusual characteristics to build-ups. However, the effect of still another phenomenon—that of movement of fluids within the wellbore—has been neglected in most build-up studies to date. Fluid movements within the wellbore after shut-in occur as a result of after-production, packer failures, leaks in the casing or tubing, or buoyancy of the gas phase when both gas and liquid are present in the well. Each of these movements can influence the pressure build-up, sometimes sufficiently to negate use of the data for computing permeability or stabilized build-up pressure. Examples of each of these phenomena are discussed below. FIELD OBSERVATIONS ON HUMP BUILD-UPS In approximately 75 per cent of the wells in a medium-sized field in South Texas the pressure build-up curves rise to 3 maximum and then decline to what appears to be a stabilized reservoir pressure as shown in Fig. I. Similar behavior has also been observed in wells in other fields in Texas and Louisian:,. Because of the possibility of such behavior being a mechanical failure of the pressure bomb. the bombs were run in tanden into one well which had been known to exhibit this behavior. The Oregon School of Mines Society held its regular monthly meeting on the evening of October 23. This meeting was an informal reunion at which members gave accounts of personal experiences during the last three months. Many members of both junior and senior classes answered their country's call to arms and so did not return to college. The senior class is particularly well represented in the Army, as two men hold lieutenant's commissions and a third is already in France with a hospital unit. The junior class has also contributed men to various branches of the service. Plans for the regular meetings include discussions by members and lectures by outside authorities oil mining and allied topics. These meetings are open to the lower classes and all others interested. The Oregon School of Mines Society, composed of members of the junior and senior classes, has, joined with the sophomore and freshman relining students in purchasing a Liberty Bond under the name of the Miners' Club of 0. (Read at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting, May, 1877.) AT first sight this subject seems to belong to pure theoretical geology, but examination will soon show that it has important practical and economic interest to the mining engineer. The conclusion that all the northern portions of our country, as well as of the eastern continent, have, in the later periods of geological history, been covered with a thick bed of ice, is now accepted by geologists. This bed of ice, except in its greater magnitude, was like the modern glaciers of the Alps, and other mountains which extend above the line of perpetual snow. The marks it has left upon the surface show that it was comparatively thin on its southern. edge, but that its thick¬ness was much greater a little further north, and that it was several thousand feet thick at its heaviest parts. This variation of its surface would give it a descending slope towards the south, and cause the mass of ice, like a semifluid substance, to move in that direction.

"For his vision, determination, dedication, and leadership in the conquest of the remote and rugged Ertsberg and the technical and human barriers to its development and for his lecture ..." It is a great honor for me to be included among the Jackling Award recipients, many of whom have been close friends and associates. My subject is the development of the Ertsberg, a copper mine located 4' south of the equator, 70 miles (113 km) from the south coast of Irian Jaya---the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia at an elevation of 12,000 ft (3658 m) in an area which was inhabited by a few "stone age" people when I first arrived there in 1960. Persistence, tenacity, immagination and innovation were all required to bring the Ertsberg into production. The technical, financial and political problems that have been faced over the past 16 years were unique in many respects. I hope that my paper will give some encouragement and help to future developers of mines in difficult and inhospitable surroundings.

THE casting of steel in large molds brings into play all of the undesirable effects that result inevitably from slow cooling. The origin of the molten metal, whether basic or acid open hearth or electric furnace, has little if anything to do with the phenomena involved. If the quantity of molten metal to be cast in a single mold is large enough, there is very little one can do about it-the metal will cool so slowly that 'nothing one can do, other than to provide as good feeding as practicable from an adequate reservoir of metal in the sink head, will be of any avail. Recently we have had occasion to cast a 108-in. octagon ingot weighing 545,700 lb, necessitating the combining of metal from three 100-ton open-hearth heats. This is one of the largest ingots ever made. The body of the ingot weighed 448,800 lb, which includes a bottom pool of about 7500 lb of metal, and the sink-head weight was 96,900 lb, or about 18 pct of the total weight.

Throughout the world nuclear power re- actors are being designed and constructed as the energy source for stationary power plants. They are built to power submarines, surface ships, and long-range aircraft and to provide small package power plants that can be set up with relative ease in outlying areas. Regardless of type, most of these plants are designed to operate at the highest permissible temperatures and with the greatest possible burn-up of fuel. On paper it is now possible to design a nuclear power plant that will out-perform all existing types of power-generating plants, and at costs which are attractive. Such plants, however, are not now being built, nor will they ever be built, unless major engineering advances are made in the realm of reactor materials. The reason for this is straight- forward enough. Although it is known that huge quantities of energy can be generated in nuclear fuels within short periods of time, as yet there are no construction materials capable of withstanding the severe conditions that would exist within a power reactor operating with ultrahigh output.

THE THIRD and most important item on the Phelps Dodge agenda for the development of new ore supplies involved the site of the company's initial venture into Arizona, the old mining camp of Morenci. By the purchase of the Arizona Copper Company's holdings in 1921, Phelps Dodge had obtained control of virtually the entire Morenci district, including town, public utilities, and, above all, the huge mineralized area that had once been divided between numerous competing companies. Because of this rigid concentration of ownership in the hands of one organization, Phelps Dodge was able to plan and successfully carry out a program of greater magnitude than any Arizona mining company had previously under- taken. The immense deposit of low-grade ore, usually referred to as the Clay Orebody, had been known to the mining companies of Morenci for many years. Pioneer exploratory work, both by the Arizona Copper Company and later by Phelps Dodge, revealed that the deposit, mostly of light-gray porphyry rock, lay under a hard capping from two hundred to five hundred feet thick. WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. In the quantitative interpretation of electric log data it is essential to know the formation factor, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the formation 100 per cent saturated with brine to the resistivity of the brine.' This concept implies that the formation factor for any given rock is constant irrespective of the resistivity of the brine or solution with which it is saturated. It is apparent that this can be true only when the rock matrix is wholly non-conductive. As reservoir rocks may contain clay or shale having an appreciable conductance one may expect these constituents to influence the determination of true formation factor. The formation factor may be theoretically derived from log data by dividing the resistivity of the mud filtrate invaded formation by the resistivity of the mud filtrate. Such a method of calculntion has implicit in it the assumption that the fluids in the invaded formation are wholly replaced by mud filtrate. that the solid matrix is non-conducting, and that the formation factor of the invaded zone is identical with the formation factor of the uninvaded zone. Since the validity of the first two basic assumptions regarding the insulating character of porous matrices and the displacement of the interstitial fluids in porous media do not appear to be fully established, the formation factors of a number of cores and clay slurries have been measured under conditions suitable for verifying the assumptions and the extent of any errors inherent in them. CORE STUDIES Apparatus and Procedure Resistivity measurements were made on short cylindrical permeable cores which had been previously mounted in lucite.2 The cores were clamped by means of insulated bolts between brass plates about 5 cm square and 1 cm in thickness. The plates were provided with a ring seal to prevent leakage between them and the core mount, and had a centrally located orifice so that fluids could be flowed through the mounted core. The brass mounting plates were used as electrodes and any current flow between them necessarily passed only through the constituents of the intervening core. Fluid saturation of the core, and fluid flow through the core, were effected by a centrifugal pump connected to the outflow end of the core, thus providing a differential pressure across the core of approximately one atmosphere. The procedure used was first to evacuate each core by means of the pump and then to saturate the core with an aqueous sodium chloride solution of known resistivity. The resistance of the core was measured and flow of the solution through the core continued for sufficient time to establish a constant resistance reading. After equilibrium had been reached with one solution, another sodium chloride solution of a different resistivity was flowed through the core and the flow continued until a constant resistance reading was again obtained. This procedure was continued until resistance measurements of the core had been made with a series of solutions within a salinity range from 1.0N NaCl to distilled water. The data obtained enabled the apparent formation factor of given porous rocks when saturated with fluids of different resistivity to be computed and also provided information regarding the ability of an invading fluid to displace interstitial water from a core. Results Berea Sandstone — The first core examined was a specimen of Berea sandstone." This core had been cut essentially parallel to the bedding for permeability studies. The core was clamped in the core holder and saturated with 1.0N NaCl solution and the resistance determined. It was subsequently flushed and the resistance measured when saturated in turn with 0.1N, 0.025N, 0.01N, .005N sodium chloride solutions and finally with distilled water. AS far back as 40 years ago management made the initial steps toward utilizing the large amount of reject marble produced by the dimension stone quarries in sized products. In 1947 the Calcium Products Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. was organized to manufacture crushed, ground, and screened products from Georgia marble.* It became obvious early in operations that salability of any products of this type was determined by several factors: high calcium carbonate content, whiteness, dryness, and cleanness. Because no reject material could consistently meet these specifications, Calcium Products Div. now operates three underground quarries for raw material feed. In underground operations no stripping is required, surface contamination and trash are eliminated, weather causes no operational difficulties, and the raw material is maintained dry for plant processing.

The preparation of pure metals by the thermal decomposition of volatile halides was developed byde boer' and van Arkel.2 This has proved to be a useful technique for the refining of columbium,the mechanical and physical properties of which are seriously altered by such interstitial contaminants as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon. The conventional deposition surface of a resis-tively heated metal filament was replaced, Fig. I, with an indirectly heated clear quartz surface. The impure columbium (feed) was contained in the annular space between the Vycor deposition bulb and the perforated molybdenum retaining cylinder. The head assembly was attached to the deposition bulb by fusing the Vycor at "A". This unit was then connected to a vacuum system composed of a three-turn glass coil to eliminate fracture due to vibration or expansion, a McLeod gage, a cold trap, a two-stage mercury diffusion pump, and a mechanical pump. The entire system was cold outgassed, and the 10 to 20 g of iodine in the auxiliary bulb (reservoir) was held in dry ice to prevent excessive loss of iodine. The columbium was hot outgassed at 800" to 825oC with the pressure maintained at l0-5 to 10-6 mm Hg for 48 hr and cooled under vacuum to 200° to 240oC. Iodine was sublimed from the reservoir and collected in the deposition bulb. The feed material temperature was adjusted to give the desired iodide vapor pressure and the finger temperature of 1000" C was independently attained and measured with a platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouple located in the center of the nichrome wire helical heating element, "F." The system was attended until temperature equilibrium was established, whence it operated without attention. This is a definite ad- vantage over the conventional "hot-wire" technique which required either constant attention or automatic control. In operation, the iodine vapor originally introduced into the vessel reacted with the crude metal to form a columbium iodide. This iodide vapor diffused to the hot deposition surface where it thermally decomposed, depositing columbium and releasing iodine. This liberated iodine then diffused back to the crude columbium where iodide was formed again. Thus, by repetition of this process, the iodine carried pure columbium from the crude material to the filament, where it deposited. The success of the "iodide" process in producing ductile metals depends on preventing the transfer of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon from the feed material to the deposit. In many cases relatively minor quantities of these interstitial contaminants impair the ductility of metals. The material produced by the iodide process has such exceptional ductility that it is frequently and mistakenly assumed that iodide metal is always of very high purity. This assumption is not necessarily true since a number of metallic impurities can also be transferred. In the present investigation, the temperature of the feed material was adjusted to iodinate selectively and the deposition temperature adjusted to decompose the iodides selectively. By this technique, some metals present in the feed material were prevented from codepositing with the columbium. It is quite important to have the feed material symmetrically located around the deposition surface in order to obtain a uniform deposit at the maximum rate. For example, Runnalls and pidgeon3 observed that, when the base of a titanium filament was about 1 cm from the feed material, deposition was rapid on that section close to the feed, but that the rate decreased with distance from the feed so that a

INVESTIGATORS in the areas of plasticity, crystal growth, and stress analysis have a need for crys-tallographic data such as the interplanar angles. This information is utilized in the form of a stereo-graphic projection from which orientation determinations can be made. Calculations of mechanical properties, such as the critical resolved shear stress, require values for the angles between directions as well as the interplanar angles. Only a limited amount of this data is available for tetragonal crystals. The equations for these angles are relatively simple but because of the large numbers of angles involved and the infinite number of structures that could be investigated, it was decided to program these calculations on a high speed digital computer. IN a recent paper by Servi and Grant,' it was illustrated that the slip band spacing and stress based on creep test data were related by the equation: d =1/ where d is the spacing in millimeters and v is the stress in psi, based on a more complete equation proposed by Orowan. It was shown further,' that for a. given grain size, the slip band spacing became larger with decreasing stress (and was independent of temperature), until such time that the slip band spacing becomes greater than about one-half the grain diam- eter. When this occurred, the mechanism of deformation in creep of 2s aluminum at high temperature changed from slip to grain boundary deformation (sliding). Additional metallographic evidence is now available which confirms this in a most interesting fashion.
