The word asbestos is a broad term that has been accepted and applied to a number of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and thicknesses, but differ in chemical composition and other properties. It is generally recognized that there are six varieties of asbestos; the finely fibrous form of serpentine known as chrysotile, and five minerals of the amphibole group, i.e., amosite (not fully recognized as a mineral species name but accepted in asbestos terminology), anthophyllite, crocidolite, tremolite and actinolite. (Figs 1-4.) Physical and Other Properties The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensely in recent years. X-ray diffraction patterns 1 to 15 have been used as a means of identification and classification. The amphibole group structures have been fairly well established while the serpentine group has been the subject of many investigations during the past six years. Low-angle X-ray scattering techniques5 have shown that the chrysotile fibrils are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 180Å* units to 300Å units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. The electron micrographs of chrysotile asbestos (Figs 1-4) have also indicated that the fibrils might be in the form of a hollow tube. This point has been the subject of considerable controversy by a number of investigators.7 to 16 Density measurements17 made on a sample of high quality Arizona fiber did not indicate that the fiber had a hollow tube structure; however, the so-called "sheet structure" of the fibril could be distorted in such a way that it gives the appearance of a hollow tube in the electron microscope. It is of interest to quote one investigator, F. L. Pundsack,17 in this connection: Although the empirical composition of chrysotile is 3MgO.2SiO2.2H20, the true unit cell[#] composition is best represented as Mg12(OH)16Si8O20. This cell has dimensions of a= 5.3Å, b = 9.2 Å, and c = 14.6 Å where the "a" direction is the fiber axis. The calculated density of this unit is 2.56 g/cc, a value in close agreement with experimentally determined density values for chrysotile. ZINC, manganese, and aluminum received attention at the two nonferrous metallurgy sessions at the Annual Meeting. L.P. Davidson, general superintendent of the rebuilt Monsanto zinc plant, described its operation, which reflects Polish practice and is really a combination of electrolytic, Waelz, and retort procedure. Briefly, it embraces leaching of roasted concentrate with sulphuric acid, electrolysis of sulphate solution using Tainton lead-silver anodes with ?goulac? added to the electrolyte, treatment of tailing in Waelz kilns, and retorting of the recovered zinc oxide, casting furnace dross and residues. Recovery is good, equipment and maintenance costs low. Ferrate zinc that might be lost in the electrolytic process appears to be recovered as oxide in the Waelz treatment.

President H. M. Howe, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary): Le Chatelier's pyrometer is certainly a most convenient and accurate instrument for the laboratory, and one that may be used under some conditions in the mill. I have used it for several years and with great satisfaction. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen and unlike Herr Blass, I have always found that its indications remain constant over long periods. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen, also, I find it possible, in a quiet place, to read with extreme accuracy ; and, by the use of a telescope, I can read temperatures to within a degree, for some delicate determinations which I have in hand. Variations in the temperature of the room affect the readings of the instrument far less than one would expect. When the current is cut off, the mirror does not always return exactly to the same place; in other words, the zero shifts appreciably, and must be determined often, indeed every few hours if accuracy be desired. In some cases I have had it determined within a very few minutes of every important reading. To this end a switch should he introduced, so that the circuit may be broken readily. With this arrangement we can determine accurately the position of the zero within a very few seconds of the time of taking any especially important reading. The chief causes of the variation of the zero which I have noticed are as follows: a. The suspension may not be tight enough, so that the momentum of the galvanometer frame as it swings makes its supporting wires slip in their bearings. b. Changes in the position of neighboring iron objects may deflect the mirror. c. Changes in the temperature of the room may, perhaps, change the torsion of the suspension wires, and so shift the mirror. d. Dust may attach itself to the galvanometer frame, and by friction against the surrounding fixed parts of the galvanometer, may

We agree with the authors that it was unfortunate that more comprehensive data were not available when the paper was prepared, this being particularly true since we had no knowledge that the paper was being written and could not make available data which were in our process files. Further, it is our opinion that because the data are not sufficiently comprehensive the results which are presented are erratic and will lead to false conclusions. As we see it, there are three Specific reasons why the data which are presented cannot be considered accurate. 1. The preparation plant was not at equilibrium while the samples were being taken. This is indicated by the fact that the percent of solids in the circulating water varied from 3.9 pct to 10.7 pct during the period when the plant was sampled. 2. We do not believe that the samples of Bird feed which were taken were representative and could indicatc the true feed to the filter. Evidence of this is shown in the data where the dewatered product leaving the centrifuge contains more coarse material than the feed to it, that is, material which is +6-mesh in size. 3. We question if the data concerning screen analysis in the fine sizes is accurate and would conclude (from the data) that these tests were made by a dry-screen method. We have found that wet screening is always necessary to obtain a true picture of the quantity of —200-mesh fines which is present. The test work described in the Lyons-Richardson paper was conducted some time ago and the tests were carried on during a period when the preparation plant had not ironed out all of their start-up problems. Since that time most of these problems have been corrected and now this is a smooth running, well-operated prep-

NEVER having actually tried to engage in the systematic education of anyone, and having little direct knowledge of the practical problems and limitations in the field of education, I can pose only as a "nonexpert" in this field, one whose ideas are to be regarded as personal opinions. The necessity for compromise between educational ideals and the practical limitations of time, money, and mental capacities of both student and teacher is evident in the preparation of an end product that we may regard with a reasonable degree of conviction as a professional engineer. We need to do so many things. The engineering student must have a clear understanding of the basic sciences; he should develop manual skills and co-ordination; he should speak and write the language with simple clarity and directness; he should gather knowledge of a special field; and, he should be educated for living in a broad ..

A RESIDENCE of 14 years in the Republic of Colombia, spent in almost continuous traveling and prospecting-trips, has given me an intimate knowledge of the resources of that wonderful country. The man who best knows Colombia is unquestionably General Rafael Reyes, President of the Republic for the past three years, and with seven years more to serve in his present term. Such is the strength of his personality and the wisdom of his policies that his term of office will no doubt endure as long as he is willing to serve. The vastly improved economic situation and the brilliant outlook for Colombia are so directly due to the influence of President Reyes that a few lines concerning him. will not be amiss, if they serve towards a better understanding of his personality. Born of a distinguished ancestry in the mountains of Boyaca, he is now 57 years old, just the age of his friend Porfirio Diaz when be began the work which has placed Mexico in the rank of great modern nations. It was Reyes who came to Washington to protest against the action of the government of the United States of America in reference to the establishment of the Republic of Panama, and, without entering into a discussion of this affair, it can be fairly said that there was not an American in Colombia whose feelings of justice were. not outraged at the government action and subsequent refusal to submit the matter to the impartial judgment of the' Hague. President Reyes is an accomplished linguist, speaking English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. He has a remarkably. powerful voice, which can readily be heard by a large assemblage. INDEPENDENTLY of the recognized chemical reactions involved in the production of metallic zinc, the process is affected by physical conditions in efficiency, and by commercial as well as technical economy. To offer some observations concerning these conditions is the purpose of the present paper. Among the important elements of this problem is the physical nature of the particles constituting the mass of zinc oxide to be reduced. This may be the result, either of the manner of the original deposition of the mineral, or of the treatment to which it has been subjected in the roasting-furnace. The physical character of the reducing-agent is another important factor, since the carbon of some coals is much more active in reduction than that of others. The degree of fineness, whether of ore or coal, or both, likewise plays a significant part. These factors, together with the physical admixture of foreign substances with the ore, may give rise also to chemical "side-reactions," sometimes hindering or retarding, and sometimes accelerating, the reduction. Finally, thermal conditions, including the relative conductivity of the materials, deserve to be taken into account. In firing a furnace with retorts charged with a mixture of roasted ore and coal, the first reaction is naturally the boiling-off of the contained water ; the next is the distillation of the light hydrocarbons from the coal; the next is the reduction of the iron oxide to protoxide and sub-oxide successively, and then to metallic sponge; and the final reaction is the reduction of the zinc oxide in the ore by the carbon to metallic zinc. A. E. LEE, JR. (author)—In addition to the paper we should like to make a few remarks. First, the seriousness of bending of the clay retort cannot be overemphasized. Not only did bending limit the length of the vessel, but it permitted corrosive fluid slags to concentrate in the belly of the retort and thus increased the possibility of boring. Bending also practically prohibited the use of cleanout machines and increased the danger of excessive fume losses by allowing furnace gases to escape around the top of the retort mouth. It will be noted that the Blackwell pottery practice places considerable emphasis on careful drying of retorts. Perhaps it is another smelter superstition, but traditionally the aging of retorts beyond a reasonable drying period has been considered important to long life. We are unable to give a good explanation of why aging should improve retorts. During the past fall in an attempt to prove a theory that the combined water in the clay decreased during aging, about 50 samples of wet retort collars were placed in a dry room when it was closed. Loss of weight, combined water and free moisture were measured each week over the 100 day drying period. The affinity of the dried retort for moisture makes difficult the accurate measurement of free water; however, there was a clearly defined free moisture change from about 12.5 pct when freshly made to about 2 pet at the end of 18 days, then a gradual loss to about 0.25 pet at 70 days and an apparent equilibrium near this figure through the 100th day. There was no appreciable change in the combined water. The change in weight of the average sample was, however, rather unusual, there being consistently a loss of weight throughout the entire 100 days. HOWEVER good a furnace may be in regard to design, etc., or however excellent in the quality of the gas used, a suitable heat for the successful working of the metal cannot be obtained unless the melt be coated with a proper quantity of slag. This coating may be excessive or it may be deficient in quantity. The right degree of heat is the essential condition of successful working, for the quality of the steel made is never very good when the metal is allowed to simmer in the furnace for an excessive period, and this heat cannot be obtained if the metal is not protected by a proper covering of slag. This is not only to prevent the metal being over-oxidized and wasted, but also to prevent the metal being chilled when exposed with only a thin covering of slag. The slag may be obtained in either of two ways : 1, naturally, by the presence of sufficient silicon in the iron used, to unite with iron oxide to form a staple slag ; or, 2, by the addition of slag or free silica. In the first case the slag is formed naturally by the action of the oxygen in the flame - i.e., the oxidizing atmosphere of the furnace-on the silicon in the metal when melting. The charge then melts, as it is termed, "thick," and protects the banks from being cut. If too much silicon be present, however, and an excessive quantity of slag be formed, it will be found to be rather infusible, and unless care be taken to add the oxides quickly and follow the furnace up-thus rendering the slag more fusible by the extra iron oxide-the furnace bottom is liable to be pulled up. The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.'-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. THE electric smelting of manganese ore and the production of ferro- manganese did not exist as an industry, in the United States or elsewhere, previous to the outbreak of war in 1914. Ferromanganese had been produced, electrically, during times of high prices by two companies at Niagara Falls and by several European companies, but the production. was spasmodic, and none was electrically produced when ferromanganese sold at from $35 to $40 per ton. Thus the electric smelting of manganese ore must be considered as a development caused by the high prices prevailing during the years 1916, 1917 and 1918, and the necessity of smelting domestic ore in order to fill the ferromanganese requirements of the steel industry of the United States, which increased from 189,088 tons in 1914 to 356,356 tons in 1918. The electric furnace is well adapted to smelting domestic-ore because it can be located in small units near the source of ore supply. In 1918, the ferromanganese production of the United States was 333,027 tons, of which about 7 per cent., or 23,000 tons, was produced in the electric furnace. The electric furnace not only assisted materially in the development of a domestic-ore supply but made a considerable saving of coke, as it requires about 1,4 tons of bituminous or lignite coal per ton of ferromanganese compared with a blast-furnace consumption of 2.9 tons of coke per ton of ferromanganese. Some of the plants in the United States that smelted manganese ore in the electric furnace during the war and in 1920 are listed in Tabled. From early in 1919 to about February, 1920, little ferromanganese was produced in the electric furnace. During this period the price of ferro-manganese (78 to 82 per cent. manganese) was about $100 per ton. During the first half of 1920, several plants resumed operation when the, price of. ferromanganese (76 to 80 per cent. grade) gradually increased to $200 per ton, delivered.

THE 123d meeting of the Institute was held in New York Feb. 14 to 17, 1921. The total registration was 1199, as compared with 1138 at the New York meeting in 1920. The weather was a strange and welcome contrast to that of last year, when New York was buried under six feet of snow as the result of the fiercest blizzard in its history. This year there was no snow, and the weather was said to be much more like an Arizona winter than New York. A complete program of the Technical Sessions is on p. 9. The discussions of the papers presented will be published in pamphlet form as soon as possible and will be noted in MINING AND METALLURGY in the usual way.

THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, 'and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.

Wet and dry specimens of three rocks of approximately granitic composition were deformed at different experimental conditions. These experiments were carried out in order to study the extent to which water, either added or released from mineral reactions, may affect the mechanical properties and the microstructure of these rocks. The experiments were conducted in a Griggs&apos; hot creep apparatus at temperatures and pressures up to 900ºC and 1000 MPa respectively; and most of them were performed in the constant strain rate mode [(1.10-6 < t < 1 • 10-4 s-1 )]. All three rocks were low porosity rocks, and the wet specimens never contained more than 0.9 wt % of added water. The experimental results are, however, quite unequivocal: They show that wet rocks are weaker than dry ones. A significant difference is even found for rocks tested in uniaxial compression at room temperature. A few experiments carried out on specimens obtained from larger prestressed rock cores indicated that the central parts of these cores were more likely to contain more microcracks than the ends. Optical microscope examinations revealed that extensive microcracking takes place even at the highest temperatures, where other mechanisms such as slip and dislocation creep also become important. Very little partial melting could be observed except for the specimens deformed at 900ºC.

Determination of the quality of cementation of casing in oil wells in the past has involved inflow and circulation tests to insure that the producing zones were adequately sealed off from the adjacent zones. Existing logging methods, such as temperature and radioactivity surveys, may detect the presence of cement behind the casing. However, the qualities of the cement (i.e., its hardness and particularly its bond to the casing) are not indicated. The new logging method described in this paper operates on the principle that the attenuation of a sonic pulse transmitted by a casing is greatly increased when that casing is bonded to an outer annulus of hard material (such as set cement) which has an appreciably smaller sonic-wave velocity than that of the casing. The down-hole tool contains a source of recurrent sound pulses which are detected by a receiver spaced a few feet from the source The amplitude of the detected casing-borne pulse is measured, and the resulting signal is transmitted to the surface where it is recorded vs depth. Since amplitude is a function of attenuation, the log is readily interpreted. Laboratory studies have shown straightforward relationship between attenuation and such variables as source-detector spacing and per cent of circumference bonded. It is shown that cement not set or not bonded to the casing has compara- tively little attenuating effect. Field examples show not only the cement top, but also the variation in cementation quality below the top. Further, the increase of bonding with time and after squeeze cementation is depicted. The detection of poor cement jobs is confirmed by production tests and by formation-test results. It is anticipated that the method will have wide application in evaluating cementation quality prior to formation testing in completions and recompletions. The analysis it affords may aid in further improving cementation techniques. INTRODUCTION The main purpose of oilwell cementing is to isolate a production zone from other undesirable zones. To investigate whether this purpose has been accomplished, several logging methods have been used such as temperature logs, radioactive tracer logs, etc. While these logs all respond to the presence of cement behind the casing, they do not indicate the degree of bonding of the cement to the casing. Early in the application of sonic logging, it was noticed that considerable attenuation of sound signals takes place in cemented pipe and is often made evident on the standard Sonic log by cycle skipping.&apos; The development of a circuit capable of continuously recording the amplitude of the casing-borne sound signal has made possible an extensive series of laboratory and field tests, which gave the following results. The amplitude of a sound signal after it has traveled in a firmly cemented pipe is only a small fraction of that recorded by the same device in free pipe. This provides a wide spectrum of energy levels; for given local conditions, empirical values of the amplitude can be correlated with the quality of cementation. Interpretations made in this manner generally have been confirmed by production tests, circulation tests and squeeze cementation. The purposes of this paper are to give a general description of the new logging method and to present some laboratory and field results. CYCLE SKIPPING Early attempts to study the quality of the cement behind the casing were performed with a standard Sonic log, which measures the transit time At, and were based on the well known phenomenon of cycle skipping.&apos; Cycle skipping normally is interpreted as being a manifestation of weak signals at the receivers. The log of Fig. 1 was run with the recording instrumentation adjusted to enhance cycle skipping. A mirror-image presentation was used for better visual interpretation. The transit time of sound in steel is about 58 microseconds/ft (corresponding to a velocity of 17,000 ft/ sec), and the portions of the log where this value is recorded are interpreted as zones with no cement bond. Where cycle skipping produces a higher value of At, weak signals (or a high rate of attenuation) are indicated, and a good cement bond may be present. AS most of you probably know, Australia has had many strikes. The two places that had the worst reputation were the Broken Hill mines and Port Pirie, where the smelter was located. About four or five years ago, the smelter changed hands. The new proprietors - immediately endeavored to get on better terms with the men and made such progress in that respect that, the men came to them and said, "There is no use giving us any more money. You have just raised our pay one- bob a day, but the store-keeper and the boarding-house keeper have raised their prices. The boarding housekeeper raised our board three bob a week and the storekeeper took the rest of it and we are no better off." Learning that what the men needed most was firewood wood the company bought the wood on a tract of ground across Spencer&apos;s Gulf and- sent men over to cut it. The wood was brought to the works and given to a man to cut up. He thought he had an easy job and loafed, but when the committee representing the men discovered that his loafing added to the cost of &apos;the wood, it promptly disciplined him and made -him work as he had never worked before. The next question that arose was the distribution of the wood. The committee got bids from several cartmen whose prices varied from about two to five shillings. It gave the work to the next to the lowest bidder. The fact that if delivering the wood cost more, the user would have to pay for it, was an entirely new idea to the men.

SPEED-UP of production of crude oil and its products, accompanied by rising prices and the organization of the industry on a war basis, featured the economic aspects of petroleum in 1941. Early in the year American tankers were urgently requested by the British to replace losses and offset slower transit under convoy. Some forty American owned tankers were first assigned to Britain and an additional forty-odd ships were transferred during the summer. This threatened to reduce our transportation facilities from Gulf ports to the Eastern seaboard below requirements, especially should sinkings have increased and the British needed more ships. Co-ordinator Ickes began preparations for restricting gasoline consumption in the Eastern district and plans were formulated for the construction of an emergency trunk pipe line from Texas to New York and Philadelphia refining centers, and for a gigantic tanker-building program. Sales of new oil-heating units in the East practically ceased. The companies were urged to transport as much oil as possible by tank car and by October 140,000 barrels of oil per day were reaching the East Coast district by rail, sufficient to meet 8 per cent of total requirements. But British sinkings from July through October decreased 63 per cent compared with the four months ended June 30, Britain began the return of tankers, the construction plans were dropped, and the threatened shortage was thus averted.
