Success in the use of the Eötvös torsion balance method of mapping geologic structure depends largely on the accuracy in the interpretation of the observed results. Skill in that interpretation depends (1) on the knowledge of the types of the variation of gravity, the gradient of gravity horizontally, and of the differential curvature produced by bodies of different sizes, shapes, dimensions, and densities; (2) on the knowledge of the possible types of structural bodies which might produce the observed anomalies; (3) on the empirical knowledge gained by experience not only in the geological interpretation of torsion balance surveys, hut of interpretations of inadequate geological data; and (4) on a knowledge of the possible and probable types of geologic structures in the area of the survey. The knowledge of the anomaly which a known body will produce and conversely the knowledge of the body or bodies which will produce a known anomaly may be gained by empirical experience and by mathematical study. The knowledge gained by empirical experience is fragmentary and inexact. The geology of most structures actually is known very superficially. The surface geology may be known accurately. If the structure is petroliferous, the subsurface geology of the oil field will be known down to 3000, 4000, 5000 ft. or in a few oil fields down to 7500 ft., but the deeper geology will be unknown and the metamorphic, igneous, or massive limestone basement below the reach of the drill may contrast sharply in density with the overlying sediments. Away from the oil field, the subsurface geology is known only from scattered drill holes, which do not go to the basement. A fair but not necessarily accurate knowledge of the geology of the nonproductive area can be obtained by correlation of the wells but the degree of its accuracy in general is proportional to the density of the occurrence of the wells. The geology below the bottom of the wells however is unknown. An anomaly mapped by the torsion balance is the sum of the effects of the contrasts in mass of its whole geologic surroundings. If the dimensions of a body of abnormal density are large enough, depth or distance makes no difference in the effects on the gradient and differential curvature; and as a matter of fact, in many places, the basement and irregulari-

IN the first edition of this volume,44 feldspar was introduced as "the I commonest mineral of the crystalline rocks," usually in small grains associated with other minerals and commercially produced only from pegrnatites. Now other crystalline rocks, such as alaskites and granites, have become present or potential sources of feldspar. In addition, feldspar has encountered very vigorous competition from such substitutes as nepheline syenite and aplite. COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES The feldspars form a group of which the principal species are orthoclase, microcline, albite, and anorthite. These are aluminum silicates of potassium, sodium and calcium. There are also a barium feldspar, celsian, and barium orthoclase feldspar, hyalophane, rarely found and of no commercial importance. None of the minerals in the feldspar group are found pure or nearly pure. The potash feldspars, orthoclase and microcline, nearly always contain some albite (soda microcline, an- orthoclase); the soda feldspars usually contain some anorthite (lime feldspar). There is a series of soda-lime feldspars known as plagioclase in which the albite and anorthite molecules replace each other in varying proportions from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite. Theoretical chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table 1. The Whiteware Division of the American Ceramic Society sub- mitted a list of definitions of ceramic terms, in April 1947, for use in technical literature. For feldspar it gives: "A group of igneous minerals consisting chiefly of the aluminum silicates of potash, soda and lime, in which one base generally predominates." Commercial feldspars are intergrowths of at least two species of feldspar, which occur associated with one or more accessory minerals such as quartz, muscovite, biotite, garnet and tourmaline as well as with small but varying proportions of the decomposition product, kaolinite. INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

For several hundred years the petroleum industry has flourished in Burma and at the close of the eighteenth century there were over five hundred producing wells in the Yenangyaung field. These were laboriously dug by hand and were exceedingly primitive, yet even today a small part of India's total production is obtained from hand-dug wells. The Indian Empire, the cradle of the oil industry, today produces but an unimpressive fraction of the world's supply of petroleum, not because the size of her contribution has diminished, but because it has remained more or less stationary while other countries have far outstripped her during the prodigious increase in the world's production of petroleum in recent years. Though for the past 10 years the total production in India has been remarkably constant, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain this output and at any rate from the older fields a slow decline may be anticipated unless new productive horizons are discovered. Production figures for the 10 years 192&1929 (the last year for which figures are available) are given by fields in Table 1. Crudes of Burma and Assam The bulk of India's production comes from the Yenangyaung and Singu fields, from which the crudes are very similar, the only important difference being that the oil from the Singu-Yenangyat structure contains a higher percentage of lighter fractions. The Burma crudes resemble that of the Panhandle of Texas and have a high content of solid paraffin, though strictly speaking the oil is of mixed base with a low content of asphaltum. With the exception of the negligible production from Sabe, the Burma crudes do not require dehydration; the sulfur content is very low and is innocuous. A small amount of naphthenic acids occurs in the kerosene and intermediate oil fractions while the lubricating fraction is practically free from acid. The ash content is low and the average A.P.I. gravity of mixtures of Yenangyaung and Singu oil is 36.4. OBSERVING in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of January 16th, 1875, page 35, a report of a brief discussion upon the nature and origin of this unique and interesting coal, I take the liberty-on thus finding it a subject of interest to members of the Institute, and especially as my name came into this discussion-to communicate some results which may serve at least to overthrow certain erroneous ideas that have prevailed. While I would not claim to have made much approach to an understanding of this mineral-the whole of what I call Apozoic Mineralogy being as yet dark and almost unknown ground-yet I believe I have shown that few minerals of such importance and abundance, and so long before the world, have been so singularly misunderstood. On first examination of a sample of the substance to which the name of carbonite has been given, my surprise was not small, at failing to recognize in it one individual characteristic of true coke; neither the hardness, lustre, color, streak, porosity, sonorosity, structure, fracture, nor any of the so-called "pyrognostic" characters. Indeed, comparison with any coke, or variety or modification thereof, seemed altogether fantastic. Therefore the controversy regarding supposed trap dykes, whose existence at the locality is denied by some, seems useless, as we have no question of a natural coking, there having been no coking at all.

The oxidation behavior of MOSi2 has been studied between 450° and 650°C, the temperature region where "pesling" occurs. Disintegration ("pest-ing") of MoSi2 is shown to occur in the presence of oxygen, but not nitrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide. or argon. The rate of disintegration is extremely sensitive to oxygen pressure. The crack density of polycrystalline MoSi2 increases ivith lime at temperature. All kinds of cracks are observed: THE excellent oxidation resistance of MoSi, at temperatures of 1000 to 1700°C promises to have important technological benefits. However. the ap- Ihose which are confined within a single grain, those that ci'oss grain boundaries transversely, and those that follow grain boundaries. Laue photographs verify the existence of Iranscryslalline cleavage. Single crystals of MOSi2 do not "pest". Tlrcd solrlbility of oxygen in MoSi2 is extremely low, no lattice changes being observed as a result of exposure of MoSi2 to oxygen in the "pest" temperature range. plicability of MoSi2 is somewhat restricted by the occurrence of a completely destructive oxidation of the intermetallic phase at intermediate temperatures (300" to 6003C). This phenomena was ternled to be the "MoSi2 pest" by Fitzer who first observed it.' Molybdenum disilicide is a metallic material in both physical appearance and electrical properties.

IN recent years, two theories of the mechanism of flotation have received a great amount of attention. One of these is Ostwald's theory of linear flotation,1 according to which most collectors contain three active groups: a hydrophilic or water-loving, a metallophilic or mineral-loving, and an aerophilic or air-loving group. Under the action of these three groups, Ostwald considers a single ring of collector molecules at the three-phase air-liquid-mineral boundary sufficient to bring about the flotation of the mineral particle. Siedler, Moeller and Reddehase2 objected to this theory immediately after it was presented, but most of their objections were answered by Ostwald.3 Very recently, however, Wark and Cox4 have more adequately criticized this theory, and their criticism makes its validity appear doubtful. The other important recent theory is the "chemical" theory of flotation, proposed by Taggart and his coworkers,5 who maintain that "all dissolved flotation reagents, which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on thenot-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, function by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected." In general, they appear to consider most flotation results to be brought about by purely chemical reactions between the collectors and the products of oxidation present

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760° C. in a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove.

The magnetostrictia of nickel after increasing amounts of plastic elongation was measured at field strengths up to 1500 oe. In addition, the residual stress was measured by means of X-ray line shifts. The observed decrease in magnetostriction following plastic strain is shown to be associated with residual compressive stress. If a metal bar, whose longitudinal axis is taken as the x direction, is plastically elongated in the x direction and then unloaded, X-ray diffraction measurements will indicate the presence of a residual compressive macrostress 0%. However, stress measurement by means of mechanical relaxation does not reveal any macrostress. In a previous paper1 the fictitious macrostress indicated by X-rays was ascribed to a particular distribution of micro-stress, namely, one in which the bulk of the material was stressed more or less uniformly in compression and a very small portion in tension. It was shown that this distribution would account for Neurath's measurements2 of magnetic losses in silicon steel, because of the effect of residual stress on magnetostriction. The present paper is concerned directly with magnetostriction, in nickel, and with the effect on magnetostriction of the residual stress created by plastic elongation. The residual stress was determined by measurements of X-ray line shifts. MATERIAL AND METHODS Commercially pure "A" nickel was investigated. Its nominal composition, in weight percent, is 99.4 Ni + Co, 0.2 Mn, 0.15 Fe, 0.1 Cu, 0.1 C, 0.05 Si, and 0.005 S. Magnetostriction was measured by means of SR-4 electrical-resistance strain gages mounted on specimens 1/4 in. sq and 8 in. long. Magnetic fields up to about 1500 ce were provided by a multilayer, non-cooled solenoid. A considerable amount of heat was developed at the higher field strengths, and, to avoid errors due to changes in the specimen temperature, the following procedure was adopted. Each measurement of the magnetostriction X at a particular field strength H was preceded by demagnetization and an adjustment of the strain indicator to zero; the field H was then quickly switched on and the strain read immediately. Curves of ? vs H were flat for field strengths above about 750 oe for all specimens, and this constant value of X was accordingly taken as the saturation magnetostriction ?s The X-ray measurements of residual stress were made with a Norelco diffractometer on specimens cut from flat bars 1 1/4 in. wide, 1/8 in. thick, and 12 in. long. These measurements were confined to lattice planes parallel to the surface of the specimen. Two reflections were studied: the 311 CrKß line at 28 = 157 deg, and the 420 CuKal line at 28 = 155 deg. The line centers were determined by fitting a parabola to the peak of the line, as suggested by Ogilvie3 and as modified by Koistinen and Marburger.4 The CuKa doublet from the plastically elongated specimens was first resolved by the Rachinger method5. All X-ray measurements were made by counting at fixed angular positions. RESULTS The results of the magnetostriction measurements are shown in Fig. 1 and Table 1. The magnitude of

ALTHOUGH extensive pole figure studies have been reported by Brick1 and others2,3 showing preferred orientations in rolled and annealed 70-30 alpha brass, and by Hermann and Sachs4 in 70-30 alpha brass cups, comparatively little information has been published on textures in drawn 70-30 alpha brass tubes. Crampton5 reported a (110), [III] texture in drawn brass tubes based on selected individual X ray photograms following the method of Norton and Hiller,6 but the extent and ease of developing this texture and the annealing texture have not been reported and pole figures of these structures were not found in the literature. The present investigation was further stimulated by the possible influence of textures on the mercury stress-corrosion cracking of brass tubes. According to Snoek,7 iron-nickel alloy sheet with a strong cubic texture was more resistant to corrosion than a randomly oriented sheet. Crampon5 reported that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass drawn into tubes did not crack after 24 hr s in a standard mercurous nitrate test. Edmunds 12 found that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass did not crack in a standard mercurous nitrate test but did crack when subjected to ammoniacal vapor. Wassermann reported a similar failure of a single crystal of brass in ammonia. A tube with a strong texture might approach single crystal behavior and tend to resist mercury cracking if the differences in orientation between adjacent grains were sufficiently slight. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Crampton's5 tubes drawn 28 pct reduction in area developed a slight degree of preferred orientation while in tubes drawn 48 pct it was more marked. Based on this information, in order to obtain specimens with markedly different degrees of preferred orientation but with the same final draw, two sets of 70-30 alpha brass tubes were made following the mill schedules shown in Table I. The final draw involved a large reduction in outside diameter, and a ratio of reduction in area to reduction in outside diameter similar to that reported by Crampton,5,10 to cause mercury cracking of brass tubes. The brass contained 71.31 pct copper, 0.01 pct lead, 0.01 pct iron and zinc by difference. DETERMINATION OF POLE FIGURES A 6-in. length from each tube was rotated rapidly by an electric stirrer in 25 pct nitric acid until the gauge was reduced to 0.003-0.005 in. The tubes were carefully cut longitudinally and the walls gently flattened. They were further etched in 25 pct nitric acid to 0.0015 in. thickness and (III) pole figures were determined using copper K-alpha radiation in the manner described by Brick.1 The three general types of pole figures

As a result of the studies on recrystallization and crystal growth made in this laboratory, certain theories have been developed. These are expressed briefly in a paper by Dean and Hudson.' One of the principal points brought out in that paper is that in the deformation of a crystal, the energy supplied is distributed to the atoms of the lattice, probably by the forced formation of molecules. It is found that a Maxwellian distribution of the energy among these atoms will account for the grain growth at various temperatures. According to such a distribution the number of atoms with energy above a certain critical value, E, necessary for recrystallization at the absolute temperature T is given by n = Ne-E/kT where N is the total number of atoms. It is apparent that if this line of reasoning is correct, a metal which has been cold-worked and reheated to a temperature below that of complete annealing will have the atoms with the higher energy recrystallized, that is, reduced to normal energy and there will remain only atoms below a certain energy. If this metal is again cold-worked the peak in the number-energy distribution curve will, as compaied with its position after the first cold-working, be displaced toward the regions of lower energies, that is, the temperature of recrystallization will be higher. By a repetition of this process the position of this maximum and hence the recrystallization temperature of the metal could be raised considerably. In order to check this theory, experiments have been made on copper wire. The wire was drawn from 1/4-in. rod to 22 B & S gage and then sample lots were annealed at 400 and 220° C., respectively. The wire annealed at 400° C. gave an elongation of 34 per cent., whereas that annealed at 220° C. gave only 23 per cent. These wires were then drawn by identical practice to 34 B & S gage and the elongation determined after an anneal of 3 min. in an oil bath held at various temperatures. A classical theory of solid solutions involving neavest-nergkbor intevactions with both central and linked-central forces between atoms has been developed. It has been found that the theory, where it can be checked quantitatively, is in ageement with experiment. The theory encompasses a description of many diverse pkenomena, such as antiphase shift structures, size effect, relative stabilities of various solutions, lattice para,neters, and order-disorder transitions. In particulav. a quantitative prediction not involving adjustable pavameters is made concevning the deviation of the Au-Cu interatonlic distance in long-range ordered (Ll,) Cu-Au I fronl the average distance based on the distances in pure gold and copper. This prediction, which is in agreement with expel-intent, has not been encompassed by any preuious theory. The theory of order-disorder is fragmentary. That is, no one theory exists that can explain the variety of qualitative phenomena observed. Further, many theories are not in good quantitative agreement with experiment. This subject has been reviewed by Muto and Takagi, Tuttman, and Oriani.3 There exists no doubt that the quasi-chemical approximation is not a complete description and that the inclusion of strain energy using macroscopic elasticity theory concepts leads to results in disagreement with experimenL4 The observation of antiphase domains and ordering systems such as Cu-Pt has led to Brillouin zone treat-ment of the order-disorder transition as opposed to the classical Ising model. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to develop a pairwise approximation model that can explain many of the observed order-disorder phenomena that have puzzled investigators in the past. This theory is based upon an empirical model due to ergmman' for the elastic constants of metals. This model is generalized for multicomponent systems. As will be shown, the theory yields a short-range ordering energy for the disordered solution which differs from the ordering energy calculated from the differences in energy of disordered and long-range ordered solutions. It will be demonstrated that there is no necessary correlation between heats of formation and the tendency to order or between size effect and the tendency to order. Also, the existence of antiphase domains and iso-short-range-order systems that form superlattices (Cu-Pt) is predicted on the basis of the theory. Further, the relative stability of competing superlattices is calculable from the theory. If single-crystal elastic-moduli data are available for the pure components and one superlattice then there exists but one adjustable parameter in the calculation of lattice parameters for both the disordered and ordered solid solutions. In one special case, no adjustable parameters are required and a quantitative prediction is made. For the calculation of energies and partial order, there exists but one additional adjustable parameter, the pair-exchange energy V used in the quasi-chemical approximation (or the Ising model.) However, in these calculations, much more precise values are required for the single-crystal elastic moduli than available if the quantitative uncertainties in the predicted values of the energies are to be sufficiently small. THEORY ~er~man' has developed a model with which he was able to obtain fair agreement with experiment for the relations between the elastic constants for metals. This model which we shall call Bergman's model is a linear combination of his models I and 11. In effect, Bergman, in this model, considers that each interatomic distortion is composed of two components: a classical central force distortion with an associated central force constant and what we shall call a linked-central force distortion with an associated linked central-force constant. The linked-central force distortion component obeys the constraint that the sum of such distortions over all the bonds equals zero. No constraint is imposed on the classical central force distortion component. Bergman' derives the constraint on the linked-central force distortion on the basis of application of Pauling's relation between bond distortion and bond number to metals.ga This assumption is not logically necessary, however, and the Bergman model may be taken as a mathematical model for elastic constants, e.g., a purely empirical model without a physical basis. In the present work, the method of Bergman has been applied to two-component systems (solid solutions). In place of an external strain—which would allow a calculation of the elastic constants for the two-component system—it is considered that internal interatomic distortions exist as a consequence of having three potentially unequal distortion-free interatomic distances and but one "average" interatomic distance. It is assumed that the distortion-free interatomic distances between atoms of the same element are those found in the pure element having the same undistorted crystal structure as the solid solution. The distortion-free interatomic distance between unlike atoms is in general not measurable except in the probably nonexistent
