(written cliscussiont).-I am inclined to the view that the change in physical properties encountered in the material with which the authors are working is due to the relief of internal strains. The statement, on page 1.098 of their paper, calling attention to the fact that this phenomenon disappeared when the material was rolled into 1 7/8 -in. square billets is of particular interest. It is certain that the internal strains set lip by cooling in a small billet of this size would be much less than those produced in a billet having a larger cross-section cooling under the same conditions. The statement that the physical properties of a given test bar were materially changed by standing has been brought to my attention in connection with the testing of gun forgings. I have made a number of observations on forgings produced at Watertown Arsenal to ascertain whether any change in ductility was produced by the aging of the test specimens. The results were always negative, but this can be explained by the fact that ii gun forging is generally a forging that has been quenched and subsequently drawn at a relatively high temperature.

Although this fact has been known for some time, the copper literature contains little or no information regarding it and the field seems never to have been properly investigated from a metallurgical standpoint. According to Greenawalt,2 cupric chloride, CuCl2, when ignited gives cuprous chloride; therefore cuprous chloride is always formed when copper enters into reaction with chlorine at a high temperature. Cuprous chloride melts somewhat below a dull red heat, and does not volatilize in closed vessels, even if strongly heated, but if heated in the air it goes off as a white vapor, Hofman3 gives the melting point of cuprous chloride

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceives as a cost-effective procedure to answer quest ions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

The oxidation of Ni-3 to 25 wt pd Al alloys has been studied in 0. 1 atm of oxygen at temperatures between 900° and 1300°C. These alloys have been found to oxidize by three different mechanisms which depend on the temperature of- oxidation and the alloy composition. Two of the three mechanisms do not permit a continuous layer of Al,0, to be formed on the alloy surface and the oxidation rates are greater than that for pure nickel. The third mechanism results in the formation of an external A1203 scale and lke oxidation rates are about three orders of magnitude smaller than those for pure nickel. The minimum amount of aluminum required for the formation of external scales of A L,0, has been determined. NICKEL-base alloys are currently the main source of materials for use at elevated temperatures in gas turbine engines. These alloys are usually coated to obtain oxidation resistance. Coatings on nickel-base alloys are frequently formed by reaction of the alloy with aluminum whereby alloyed nickel aluminides are formed. The alloyed nickel aluminides provide protection to the nickel base alloy because external scales of A1203 (alumina) are formed during oxidation and mass transport through A120, is slow in comparison to mass transport through most other oxides. In view of the protective properties of A1203, it is important to know how much aluminum is required in these alloys in order to form external scales of AlzO,. The present paper is concerned with the oxidation kinetics and the oxidation mechanisms of Ni-A1 alloys and the minimum amount of aluminum required in these alloys for the formation of external scales of Alz03. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS When a Ni-A1 alloy is heated in oxygen at elevated temperatures, the following reactions can take place on the surface of the alloy where the oxide phases are assumed to be virtually pure: These oxide phases are in the form of nuclei scattered over the surface of the alloy and, in view of their rapid formation, they need not be in equilibrium with the alloy. As the oxidation process continues, equilibrium between the alloy surface and the oxide phases is approached and the stability of the oxide nuclei is determined by the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface because of the following reactions: 3NiA1204 + 2A1 (alloy) = 4AlzO3 + 3Ni (alloy) [41 4Ni0 + 2Al (alloy) = NiA120, + 3Ni (alloy) [ 5 1 Application of the mass-action law to Eqs. [4J and [5J yields the following equilibrium conditions for these reactions: where aA1 and aNi are the activities of aluminum and nickel, are the standard free energies of formation of NiO, A1203, and NA1204, respectively, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. If the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface is such that (akl/ahi) is greater than the equilibrium values defined by Eqs. [6] and [7], then Reactions (41 and [5] will go to the right as written. Conversely, if the alloy composition is such that the activity ratio (aLl,/aki) at the alloy/oxide interface is less than the equilibrium values, then Reactions [4] and [5] will proceed to the left. The equilibrium activity ratios in Eqs. [6] and 171 can be calculated since values for the standard free energies of formation of the oxide phases are available. Standard free energies of formation for NiO and A1203 have been tabulated by Elliott and ~leiser.' The standard free energy of formation for NiA1204 can be obtained from the data of Tretjakow and Schmalzried.' The results of these calculations are tabulated in Table I. Table I shows that the following inequality is valid over the temperature interval 900" to 1300°C: (Reaction [5]) (Reaction [4]) « 1and therefore the aluminum activity for these compositions can be taken as equal to the square root of the activity ratios (i.e., aNi = 1). FELIX E. WORMSER was born in Santa Barbara on Oct. 31,1894, so is one of the youngest members of the Board, only H. D. Wilde t 39) and W. M. Peirce (43) being his juniors. After graduating from the Columbia School of Mines as an E.M. in 1912, he went West and worked for the Snake River Mines, the Baker Mines Co., and the Cornucopia Mines CO., all in Oregon. Then for a year or two he was the youngest U. S. Mineral Surveyor in Oregon. In 1918 he was in the Army from which he was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. Early in 1919 he joined the staff of the Bureau of Mines, at Washington, assisting in compiling reports and in War Minerals Relief work. His acquaintance there with J. E. Spurr led to his joining the staff of the Engineering and Mining Journal as assistant editor in April, 1920. He specialized in market studies and assisted in the compilation of the Journal's metal quotations until June, 1925, when he resigned to engage in active mining examination and consulting' work in the Northwest for H. H. Armstead. Three years later he returned to New York at the time of the formation of the Lead Indus- tries Association, becoming its Secretary and Treasurer, a position that he has since held.

WHEN 60:40 brass is heated to 825° C., given a drastic quench to obtain the beta solid solution, and reheated, various changes take place in the structure. Reheating at 200° C. causes a fine, granular, sorbitic structure to appear which has been considered alpha solid solution. These particles coalesce at higher temperatures of reheating, and at 470° C., the alpha forms twins. A further study of these transformations was considered worth investigating. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The object of the experimental work was to study the effect of mechanical work on rolled 60:40 brass, quenched and reheated, and the mechanism of twinning in the alpha reeds of a furnace-cooled specimen. It was desired to determine the effect of mechanical work on the transformations taking place on reheating the quenched material, both at 200 and at 470° C. A study of the nature of the structure resulting from the breakdown of the beta at 200° C. and a study of the mechanism of twinning above 470° C. were considered problems for investigation. The question of the twinning of the alpha reeds was also an important phase of the work. With high-power magnifications, there was hope of following these processes.

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neu-mann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2. was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form 12111. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2. In the death of Major A. B. desaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major desaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armidc Longer desaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when he became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. desaulles survives him. In 1876, Major desaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. As a feature of the Pittsburgh meeting in May, 1879, Major and Mrs. desaulles entertained the members of the Institute at dinner at Dunbar on the occasion of the Institute's visit to Dun-bar furnace. In 1883, he took up the formation of the Oliphant Furnace Company in that county, of which he became and remained the head for five years. He was then called to the superintendency of the New Jersey Zinc Company at South Bethlehem, Pa., in which position he remained until his retirement,from active service in 1911, maintaining, however, hi.; keen interest in the metallurgy and smelting of zinc, in collaboration with his son Charles, a member of the Institute and a Director of the American Smelting and Refining Company. From 1888, until his death, he resided in South Bethlehem, a prominent and highly respected citizen of that progressive and stirring community. Major desaulles was a member of the Protestant Espicopal Church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of the Church of the Nativity at South Bethlehem. He was president of the Men's Club of the Church of the Nativity. His kindly nature led him to take an active interest in the promotion of healthful sports among young men. He was ever active in all things pertaining to the general welfare and uplift of his fellowmen. In his death the profession has lost a distinguished engineer and mctallurgist and our country a patriotic able citi-zen and man of affairs—one greatly beloved by those whom he honored with his friendship, and respected and looked up to by all who were privileged to know him.

The effect of working reduction, stress-relief annealing, and recrystallized grain size on the tensile and notch-tensile properties of molybdenum and Mo-0.5 Ti was studied. It was found that increasing the amount of working reduction increased the strength and reduced the tendencies toward brittle behavior. Stress -relief annealing did not alter the strength but lowered the transition temperature. Increasing the recrystallized grain size lowered the strength and raised the transition temperature. The notch -unnotch strength ratio began to decrease with decreasing temperature at temperatures below those at which the notched ductility fell to zero for all of the micro structural conditions investigated. BEING bcc metals, the refractory metals in Groups Va and VIa (V, Cb, Ta, and Cr, Mo, W) undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition and exhibit brittle fractures at low temperatures. Previous research has shown that molybdenum and tungsten not only have higher transition temperatures than columbium and tantalum but show a marked sensitivity of transition temperature to structure as well.' Recrystallized materials become brittle at considerably higher temperatures than is the case with material having a worked or fibered micro-structure. Evidence of structure sensitivity has also been detected in columbium- and tantalum-base alloys containing appreciable amounts of molybdenum or tungsten such as F-48 (Cb-15W-5Mo-1Zr) and Ta-10w.2 This paper describes the results of research conducted to further evaluate the effects of metal. lurgical structure on the low-temperature tensile and notch-tensile properties of molybdenum and Mo-0.5Ti. The effects of rolling reduction, stress-relief annealing temperature, and recrystallized grain size were studied. Considerable progress has been made in explaining the fundamental mechanisms of the flow and fracture characteristics of bcc metals. Several of these concepts are helpful in interpreting the data obtained in this study. Brittle fractures occur when the highly temperature-sensitive yield strength equals, or exceeds, the temperature-insensitive brittle cleavage fracture stress.3 The rapid increase in yield strength with decreasing temperature, characteristic of all bcc metals, is therefore of primary concern. petch4 has described the yield strength, ay, (stress required to initiate plastic flow) of bcc metals by the expression where ai is the frictional resistance to slip, Ky is a constant numerically equal to the slope of a a vs curve, and 2d is the average grain diamefer. The oi term itself is thought to be composed of a temperature-insensitive component dependent on impurity content and second-phase particles and a temperature-sensitive component dependent on the Pierls-Nabarro force.5 This equation has also been demonstrated to hold for the flow stress (stress required to maintain continued plastic flow).' Brittle-crack nucleation is thought to occur by the coalescence of dislocations piled up in slip planes at sessile dislocations or twin and grain boundaries.7,8 These proposed mechanisms require that a large number of dislocations be released into the active slip planes so that sufficiently large stress concentrations are produced at the dislocation pile-ups to enable coalescence into a micro-crack. Therefore, at least a microscopic amount of slip must occur in some grains to facilitate initial crack formation. Cottrell 7 has predicted that brittle fracture, nucleated by slip, should occur when where ty is the shear yield strength, ß = 1 in un- notched xension, u is the shear modulus, and y is the effective surface energy. This equation incorporates the Griffith concept of fracture that a crack will propagate if the decrease in strain energy equals or exceeds the increase in surface energy.

The results of an investigation of vanadium-rich V-O solid solutions are presented, indicating the structure and lattice parameters of two solutions, a and ß, and their approximate temperature-composition existence. The a solution is the terminal body-centered cubic one, and contains up to 3.2 atomic pct 0. The ß solution has an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure, is formed at 1270°C, and exists from about 15 to 22 atomic pct 0. From the evidence available, the various phase boundaries have no appreciable temperature dependence. Evidence has been found for a polymorphic transformation in pure vanadium at 1550°C. IN an earlier investigation' dealing with the preparation of pure vanadium by calcium reduction of the oxide, it was found that small amounts of oxygen drastically reduced the ductility of the metal. Because this effect was so marked, it was decided to make a study of the solubility of oxygen in solid vanadium. This report deals principally with this solubility and the nature of the phase relationships in the vanadium-rich region, particularly at temperatures below 1300 °C. However, during the investigation enough data on the V-0 system were obtained to make it appear worthwhile to present a tentative phase diagram up to the composition VO. The only significant prior work found on this system are the contributions of Klemm and Grimm,' and Mathewson et al.3 Klemm and Grimm prepared a wide range of V-O compositions by powder techniques including the compositions VO.l, VO.2, VO.3 and VO4 (9.1, 16.8, 23, and 28.6 atomic pct 0, respectively). The first three compositions were found to consist of a body-centered tetragonal solid solution, while the last also showed lines of VO (NaCl structure). They found that the parameter c, increased and the parameter a, decreased with increasing concentration of oxygen. For their composition VO.27, or about 16.8 atomic pct O, they cite the values a, = 2.948A, c, = 3.53A, and c/a = 1.2. Klemm and Grimm made no attempt to determine the solid solubility limit nor to construct a phase diagram. They did, however, give some data on the homogeneity range of VO, and they proposed a structure for the body-centered tetragonal solid solution; these points will be taken up later. Materials and Preparation of Samples The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared in the laboratory by the method previously mentioned.' A typical analysis is as follows: Fe, 0.007 pct; Si, 0.02; Ca, 0.06; C, 0.224; O2, 0.044; N,, 0.0017; H2, 0.003; and V, 99.34 ±0.3 (assay). The vanadium assay is probably low by about the error given. The impurities total about 0.36 which, if subtracted from 100, gives a purity of about 99.6. At the time material was being prepared for this work no suitable technique was available for melting vanadium without appreciable contamination. The procedure adopted therefore was to cut the calcium-reduced regulii into slices which were then rolled to strip about 0.025 in. thick for oxygen diffusion. Pieces of rolled vanadium of approximately 0.025xY4xl in. and weighing about 0.3 g were suspended in a vertical fused-silica tube which was part of an ordinary gas absorption apparatus. The silica tube was heated by an electric resistance-tube furnace which could be raised around the silica tube or lowered away from it as desired. This apparatus had no novel features which require detailed description. Other than the silica tube and furnace, it consisted of a glass system evacuated by a liquid nitrogen trapped mercury diffusion pump, a mercury-operated gas burette, a McLeod and a Pirani gage, and a mercury manometer. It was also equipped with suitably located stopcocks for isolating various parts of the system; the vacuum ordinarily attained was between 10" and 10-6 mm of mercury. Oxygen generated by decomposing MnO2 was passed through anhydrous magnesium perchlo-rate before introducing it into the gas burette and thence to the absorption chamber.

WHEN Georgius Agricola, in 155o, dedicated his now famous De re Metallica to the rulers of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and other, smaller principalities, he included in his review of previous works on similar subjects reference to two books written in German: one, an "anonymous, rather disorganized account of assaying for metallic content and of metals," which must be the Probierbüchlein, the other, "dealing - with veins, written by Calbus of Freiberg, a well-known physician."* Calbus is mentioned a second time-and cited-at the end of the Third Book of De re Metallica. Comparison of the citation with the Bergbüchlein leaves no doubt that Agricola considered Calbus of Freiberg the author of the latter work, although all the editions of the Bergbüchlein known now were published anonymously. It is generally accepted by those who have dealt with the bibliography of the Bergbüchleint that Calbus was Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe, who served the City of Freiberg, in Meissen, as health officer in 1497, as member of the City Council in 1509, and as mayor in 1514 and 1519. He died at Leipzig in 1523. In connection with the very garbled description of the mining compass toward the end of Chapter 3 of the Bergbüchlein it is of interest that von Kalbe is supposed to have been not only a physician of repute but a mathematician, astronomer, mine sur-

Hunkered up against the spine of the Andes in a tight valley where natural refuge from avalanche hardly exists is the daring Rio Blanco project of Cerro Corp. The deposit here was found in 1904, but nature has foiled all previous attempts to open it. To an experienced mountaineer or a highway engineer with mountain experience, the avalanche hazard in the valley of the Blanco river would be immediately apparent. The collar shaft is at the head of the valley at an elevation of 3600 m and for 12 km down the valley there is no space on the floor for building very much; the dissected rock walls are roadways for avalanches and even a highway could not be maintained sufficiently passable. This is the proposition taken on by the Cerro Corp. Chilean National Decree #1699, passed on December 9, 1966, signified "Go" to the Compania Minera Andina, a company whose shares are held 70% by the Cerro Corp. and 30% by the government of Chile. The orebody, although only partially delineated, contains proven reserves of 120 million tons of ore averaging 1.58% Cu. When the operation comes on stream in the last quarter of 1970, it will be at the rate of 11,000 tpd. Annual production will be 65,000 tpy of recoverable copper in concentrates.

The Panhandle area of northwest Texas embraces the northern portion of the Permian Basin of Texas as well as a considerable portion of the western part of the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. For the purpose of this report it will include in addition to the 20 counties of the Panhandle proper the two tiers of counties lying to the south, a total area of about 32,000 square miles. Crossing the Texas Panhandle diagonally from northwest to southeast is the Amarillo Arch, related to which is all of the production discovered to date. Oil Production Up to Jan. 1, 1930, the Panhandle has produced about 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. The peak yearly production occurred in 1927, during which period 49,000,000 bbl. were produced. In 1928 the production fell to 25,000,000 bbl., but in 1929, on account of important discoveries in Gray County, the total increased to 31,000,000 bbl. To date Hutchinson County has produced 64 per cent. of the total. Table 1 shows the total yearly production by counties. The present production of the Panhandle is 100,500 bbl. from 1745 wells or an average of 57.6 bbl. per well compared to a production on Jan. 1, 1929, of 59,748 bbl. from 1468 wells or an average of 40.7 bbl. per well. UNQUESTIONABLY, the outstanding feature of the piping for the sulphide plant is the large amount which had to be done in almost every size from instrument tubing to 84 in. OD pipe. In this article the piping will be considered under the main headings of Yard Piping and Building Piping. Tables I and II give data concerning the individual systems. In the case of yard piping the figures pertaining to lengths and weights are approximately correct; those for building piping are given only for the concentrator and smelter buildings where the amounts were the most extensive. Yard Piping The installation specifications for yard piping called for all sizes larger than 12 in. to have welded joints made with outside welding rings. This type of joint was selected over butt-welded joints because less time would be needed for lining up, damaged pipe ends would be less of a problem, and deflections up to 6° per joint could be made when necessary. These advantages were thought to outweigh the disadvantage of the greater amount of welding required. Yard piping in sizes of 3 to 12 in. was specified to have butt-welded joints made with inside welding rings which were intended to facilitate lining up and keep welding material out of the lines. Screwed connections were specified for sizes under 3 in. No protective coatings or wrappings were required on pipe to be buried because of the dry climate at Chuquicamata.

Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia under USBM Cooperative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of 14 small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by a surface exhaust fan. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7% to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance, the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m (98 to 148 ft) from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar. The standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m (20 ft), and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane migration toward cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45º ± 10º.

IT was once aptly said that a sign of approaching senility is ceasing work on a subject and beginning to talk about it. Perhaps that explains why, after many years in which part of my duties has been the training of college men in various branches of petroleum exploration geophysics, I have now begun to talk about it. In making an outline of what I believe ought to be discussed under the general heading of the title, I found it almost impossible to subdivide the ideas into an ordered set of discrete subjects. Rather, the pertinent remarks seemed to interlock almost everywhere. The consequence is that it will be necessary to start with the conclusions and then try to justify them by jumping back and forth. However, based on the types of men with whom I have had to deal, the subject naturally divides itself into two parts. In the first part, I should like to deal with the case of those undergraduates whose natural bent is toward the physical sciences and who may decide to enter the geophysical fold as a career. The other part will deal with those many men, geologists and engineers for the most part, who have drifted into exploration geophysics by one means or another, and whom it is necessary to train for geophysical work while they are occupied in their routine jobs. Here it may be in point to remark that most men in exploration geophysics at present have been developed from precisely the latter group, and that the problem of training here is of great importance even though, in this paper, it will perforce occupy the secondary place. TRAINING OF A GEOPHYSICIST The outstanding reason for the perplexing problem on the training of a geophysicist is that ideas differ on the answer to the question: "What is a geophysicist?" In any of the scientific "specialties," like physics, for example, it is relatively simple to pigeonhole a man as being qualified to call himself a physicist. That appellation applied to an individual does not mean that he has mastered only the branches of intellectual endeavor usually associated under the broad name of "physics." We expect him also to have a more than mere acquaintance with mathematics and chemistry and some understanding of most of the other sciences. But note this important point-we expect our physicist, whom we have chosen as an example, to be intelligently trained so that, if necessary, he can and will know how and where he can get the proper information on a subject in which he is not a specialist; he will know how to absorb that information and turn it to his uses. It seems to me that this is the outstanding characteristic of a man who can truly call himself a scientist: that he is a specialist in one of the broad branches of science and that he has enough training and discipline in the scientific approach so that, when called upon to do so, he can intelligently absorb knowledge from another bordering science (and all sciences not only border upon one another to some extent, but more often, overlap one another), and

IN few mining regions in the world are the ores so varied and complex as in the Andes of central Peru. Consequently, in few localities is one company engaged in so many and such diverse metallurgical operations as the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. Concurrent with the mining of complex lead-zinc ores in Peru, and the consequent expansion of the Corporation's metallurgical activities, a department of metallurgical research was established in 1927 at La Orova. Facilities were provided for research in ore dressing, hydronivtallurgy pyrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, and analytical chemistry. In addition to laboratories. various pilot plants were built, including a concentrator, leaching plant, "by-product" smelter, and electrolytic refineries. These pilot plants are not diminutive units; they are designed and equipped as semicommercial plants for operation on a continuous 24-hour basis thus assuring the duplication of pilot plant results in actual practice. There are enormous commercial coneiderations invoIved in this question, and, as I look at the matter, the more honest criticism and fair discussion there is, the Inore likely it is that the truth will appear. This paper, based on brief field examination and on data supplied by the operators, records the condition of the Italian mercury industry as of March 1945, not long after Italy's collapse. Except for the once-Italian but now Yugoslavian Idria mine near Trieste, virtually all the known mercury deposits are in the Monte Amiata district in Siena and Grosseto Provinces, 75 miles north of Rome. This district contains the Abbadia San Salvatore. the Siele. the Argus, and the Cerreto Piano mines besides numerous prospects and unproductive mines. Under pressure from Germany the principal mines were highly productive during the early part of the war, but production fell off long before its end. All of the mines were damaged in some way at the German withdrawal but by September 1944 the Abbadia had resumed production and several others were only lacking power by the early spring of 1945. The Monte Amiata district is characterized geologically by a thick series of sedimentary rocks that range from Triassic to Eocene in age . and are surmounted on Monte Amiata itself by a thick cap of extrusive trachyte. Bodies of travertine and of landslide detritus, younger than the trachyte, are rather widespread. The structure is complex and little known but most of the ore deposits seem to lie along or near a major, north-trending fault or on associated cross-fractures. Cinnabar is the only important ore mineral and clay minerals are by far the most abundant products of hydrothermal alteration. A southward increase in the amount of stibnite, relative to cinnabar, suggests horizontal zoning. The grade of ore ranges from 0.60 to 3.0 Pet and the reserves, as compared with those in American mines, are enormous. Even in the face of war-time scarcities, the mines are remarkably self-sufficient and labor is plentiful, but the costs of production are estimated to be not greatly below those of the better American mines. Notes on the principal mines, on the mining and metallurgical methods, and on the manufacture of synthetic cinnabar are included in the paper. Introduction With but few brief interludes, Spain and Italy, including the Idria mine near Trieste, which has passed from Austrian to Italian to Yugoslavian hands in the Past 3 decades, have led the world in the production of mercury, or quicksilver, for many centuries. Despite their enviable position with respect to the supplies of a metal so essential in both war and peace, there is a notable lack of up-to-date information in America on the mercury industry of either country. Duschak and Schuette' and Schuettez,3 give by far the best summaries in English known to the writer, but the latest firsthand report cited by them on the Italian mines was published in 1915.' Having been deeply interested in the geology and economics of mercury for several years, the writer naturally felt most fortunate in being the to obtain enough firsthand information on the Italian industry to fill at least a few of the gaps in our knowledge. The opportunity came during the war, soon after this industry, together with the rest of Italy, had capitulated to the Allies.
