THE seriousness of the present tin scarcity has stimulated large consumers of this vital metal to develop drastic conservation measures in order to extend the available supplies to cover the emergency period. By devising new soldering methods and alloys the Bell System has contributed a substantial share in the tin conservation effort, Fortunately, the changes, as far as can be determined now, have not introduced weakness into the soldered joints. Some of the new procedures were already in the process of development at the onset of the emergency, while others were devised under its stress. In some instances, the newly developed solders were found to be more difficult to use than the alloys previously available, and would not have been introduced under normal conditions. One major change made that previously had been under consideration will result in large savings of tin. Unless service difficulties are encountered, this modification gives promise of remaining after the emergency has passed. The change involves a reduction in the amount of solder placed on a wiped joint between the cable sheath and the sleeve. Instead of the customary full sized wiped joint, a wipe of fillet proportions is formed. Through this change, a solder saving of more than 60 per cent per joint can be realized. Plumbers and cable splicers for many years have joined lead pipes and cable sheath by a soldering process called "wiping." The name is an apt description of the operation. For a wiped joint, the sections to be united' are heated by molten solder poured over their surfaces, and the resulting semiliquid mass is manipulated by wiping with cloth pads to a well rounded symmetrical form like the one shown in Fig. I, The operation requires considerable skill on the part of the splicer and close control of the composition of the solder. At first consideration, the problem of tightness in such joints seems simple but experience shows that even under the best conditions the fissures frequently found in the solder occasionally link and form a path that allows leakage to occur. In telephone cables not maintained under gas pressure, such leaks permit the entrance of water, which wets the paper-covered conductors and thereby impairs the insulation value and causes service interruptions. By going to an extreme and wiping off all the solder in excess. of a fillet, it has been found that many causes of porosity are eliminated. Figs. 2 and 3 show cross sections of joints wiped in the old and the new ways. The saving in solder, and consequently in strategic tin, is evident. The field splicing forces find that joints are easier to make by the new method and are less likely to be porous. The metallurgical considerations that are responsible for the success of the fillet wipe are of interest. The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

IF I LIVE another fourteen months and am still con-nected with the coal industry, I shall then have com-pleted a half century with it. Since May, 1874, when .I first entered the bituminous workings as a miner, I think I have held almost every position connected with a mine except possibly that of mule driver, for which I was unfitted by reason of my religious upbringing. We are all agreed, at least I have not heard it contra-dicted, that there is serious over-production in the bituminous industry. This has come about in various ways and is easily explained. During the Fuel Admin-istration, I recall making an estimate of the possible output of the bituminous mines of the country provided they were given a full force of men and a full-car supply; my estimate was a little over a billion tons a year. A few months ago, the late Francis H. Peabody, of Chicago, made a practically identical estimate. If, however, both of these conditions should happen con-currently, there would very soon be no market for the coal, and many of the mines would close down. Even today, if 10 per cent. more cars were furnished, to the bituminous mines, market prices would drop very seriously.

Dust-laden air is drawn into a sampling tube, and the particulate matters separated from the air and collected in the liquid in the impinger. A sample of the suspension is prepared on a slide and counted through a projection microscope. This method is simple and reliable, but it does suffer drawbacks. Since the collected particles must be counted visually, results of the dust count are not immediately available at the time the sample is taken. This seriously impedes studying the effectiveness of dust inhibitors, such as water sprays, or making adjustments in equipment. Greatest disadvantage of all, however, is the tedious task of counting particles in the sample. With the growing desirability of taking more samples, the effort involved in making these counts is a real factor in the cost of dust control. Finally, it is generally recognized that impinger dust counts can be related to health hazard only for specific kinds of dust and under similar conditions. This is because the rather complex mechanism of dust damage depends so much on size distribution of the dust. ON Aug. 10, 1884, the Retsof Mining Co. began the sinking of an 18 by 12-ft. shaft at Retsof, N. Y. Rock salt was reached in 1885, in September, at 1008 ft. below the surface. The first salt was shipped in the fall of 1885. A timber breaker was built in 1886. In July, 1895, there was a consolidation of the Retsof Mining Co., the Greigsville Salt & Mining Co., the Livonia Salt Co., and the Lehigh Salt & Mining Co. These consolidated salt companies are now known as the Retsof Mining Co., a subsidiary of the International Salt Co. Eventually all of the mines were closed except the mine of the Retsof Mining Co., at Retsof, Livingston County, New York. On July 6, 1921, about ½ mile south of the original shaft and plant of the Retsof Mining Co., a new 9 by 28-ft. concrete-lined shaft was started. The shaft is 1063 ft. deep from the top of the shaft collar to the bottom of the salt bed. At the same time a reinforced-concrete breaker and other buildings were erected. This new plant began opera-tions on Dec. 15, 1923. It was designed for a capacity of 3000 tons in 8 hours.

In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. Crouch's Pits are one hundred yards north of Cottrell's. This firm employ from 80 to 90 hands, and raise from 8 to 900 bushels per day. They are now

IT has been known for sometime that in an ionic lattice, such as that of Ag2S or FeO, the migration velocity of the anion may differ markedly from that of the cation, the cation being usually the more mobile. It has been shown, for example, that during the formation of silver sulfide tarnish on silver, the tarnish layer grows principally by the motion of silver cations through an essentially stationary silver sulfide lattice. Similarly, the growth of wüstite scale on iron proceeds principally by motion of iron ions, this being accomplished with the aid of vacant iron lattice sites into which the iron may readily move. Likewise investigations of solid solutions of various salts show that there is usually considerable difference in the mobility of the different cations. Measurements of the mobility of various metals in liquid mercury indicate that the various metals move at different rates relative to the mercury. In view of the foregoing it seems reasonable to suppose that when any single phase solution is acted upon by a field, the atoms of different elements respond in different ways; in particular, that the force arising from a particular concentration gradient in a binary alloy would cause the atoms of one component to move with a drift velocity which is in general different from that of the atoms of the other component. The recent experiments of Smigelskas and Kirkendall1 support this viewpoint, since they found, in essence, that during diffusion in alpha brass zinc moves appreciably faster than copper. This was evidenced by the relative motion of inert molybdenum wires. Such a phenomenon is incompatible with the place interchange theory of diffusion proposed by several authors, most recently by Birchenall and Mehl.2 This theory has, however, also been questioned3.4 for other reasons, principally because of the high energy required for direct atomic interchange. The rather large difference between self-diffusivity, as determined by tracer technique, and mutual diffusivity, as determined with the aid of another element at low concentration, might also be interpreted as favoring the above idea; however, Birchenall and Mehl have pointed out that there is another possible interpretation of this difference; this is discussed later. A rather interesting and pertinent observation was made by Schwartz,5 who noticed that tungsten lamp filaments, heated by direct current, commonly fail by necking down in the region at the temperature gradient near the positive end, with a concomitant swelling at the corresponding position near the negative end. He introduces considerable auxiliary evidence to show that this phenomenon is occasioned by the motion of tungsten cations which migrate in the high temperature region from the positive end toward the negative end. The mechanism of this migration is not clearly understood. If, however, this experimental evidence be accepted, we are forced to conclude that alloying elements in the tungsten may migrate by the same or a similar mechanism, whatever it may be, at a greater or lesser rate, thus giving rise

Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The following relationship can be derived to express the resistance to flow of electric current through a core sample partially saturated with conductive wetting phase, the non-wetting phase being non-conductive: where L is the average length of path followed by the current in flowing through a length L of partially saturated core, where L is the length of current path when the core is fully saturated, and where Rs and R, are the specific resistivities of the partially saturated and saturated core sample, respectively. It will be noted that R., the specific resistivity of the core sample when S, = 1.0, is equal to the "formation resistivity factor"' multiplied by the specific resistivity of the saturating fluid. If it be assumed that the average lengths of path for fluid flow and for the flow of electric current are the same, then equation (5) may be combined with equations (l), (2) and (3) to give the following relationship: The above equation suggests including a correction for tortuosity when calculating the relative permeability of a reservoir rock to a wetting phase. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship. Procedures have been developed to study the performance characteristics of unconfined pilot water floods using scaled laboratory models. The effects of operating conditions on pilot performance for variozrs well patterns have been investigated. The limitations of the laboratory model studies are outlined. Relationships between the oil recoveries of pilots and large-scale floods have been established. The applications of model studies to the prediction of large-scale waterflood performance and pilot flood design are discussed. INTRODUCTION Pilot water floods are undertaken to evaluate operational procedures and to gain advance information about the performance of an extensive water flood. In general, however, the performance of a pilot flood is not directly indicative of what can be expected from a large-scale pattern water flood. This difference stems from the fact that the over-all flow configurations are not the same for the two systems. A water flood normally consists of an array of identical well patterns. In such an array, the perimeters of the well patterns are axes of symmetry and act as impermeable boundaries. Thus, an extensive, pattern water flood can be visualized as a repetition of "confined" floods. In contrast, a pilot water flood involving only one or a few well patterns is "unconfined". Here the well patterns are not balanced by other flood units; hence, the perimeter of the pilot area does not act as an effective boundary. Accordingly, only a portion of the fluids injected (and also of those originally contained within the pilot area) is captured by the producers of the pilot. The rest escapes into the surrounding reservoir. This usually causes the amounts of oil and water produced in the pilot to be different from those recovered by a producer in an extensive water flood. Moreover, the recovery observed in the pilot can be expected to be greatly influenced by operating conditions, i.e., by the bottom-hole pressures at the injection and producing wells. The above considerations show that full utilization of pilot test results and reliable prediction of large- scale water floods require a knowledge of the relationship between the recovery performance of confined and unconfined well patterns. To date, only limited basic information is available on the behavior of pilot water floods. Craig, et al,' have investigated the effects of initial gas saturation, oil-to-water mobility ratio, and well damage on the oil recovered from a single, "normal" five-spot pilot pattern (Fig. 1). Rosenbaum and Matthews2 studied the effect of initial gas saturation and mobility ratio on the ratio of production rate to injection rate for various groupings of five-spot patterns. Paulse113 investigated the effect of mobility ratio and distance from the pilot to the edge of the reservoir on the areal sweep in a single "inverted" five-spot (Fig. 1). However, none of these studies considered the effect of operating conditions on pilot flood behavior. Moreover, hardly any of the work to date dealt explicitly with the oil-recovery performance of the pilot floods. IN a chloridizing roasting and cyanidation plant treating a manganese-silver ore, certain experiments pointed out the way to an improvement in roasting conditions by a change in the degree of crushing. The following short article is simply a description of the various changes that were necessary throughout the plant and of the results obtained. There is nothing unusual in these changes but they are of some interest in that they constitute a good many of the alterations usually resorted to in increasing production. In the beginning, the changes were brought about by an experiment that was not successful, but which clearly pointed to means of improving the operation, and is an example of the fact that often experimental work may result in failure and still be of value in arriving at correct fundamentals. The ore at the plant of Compania Minera Kildun y Anexas is crushed through a 13-in. gyratory, a 3-ft. standard Symons cone crusher and a set of 16 by 42in. rolls, the latter in closed circuit with two Tyler 400-mesh screens. The crushed ore is then conveyed to two fine-ore bins. These provide storage and feed for two 6 by 90-ft. kiln roasters, which discharge directly to coolers. The coolers in turn discharge to a 6 by 12-ft. ball mill, where the ore is ground for cyanidation. Laboratory and pilot-plant tests previous to the mill construction had indicated that minus ¼ -in. crushing was satisfactory for roasting, although results did not vary greatly with some coarser or considerably finer crushing. The plant was designed for a capacity of 300 tons per day on this basis. After a few months operation, the initial operating problems were overcome and the anticipated milling rate was reached but the results being obtained were not really good. The plant seemingly did not have much excess capacity in any department but the roasting operation was the most critically limiting factor both as to tonnage and the results obtained. If this could be improved there seemed some possibility of improving the total tonnage rate to some extent. Segregation of the calcine into various screen sizes showed that the coarser sizes ,were not giving the expected recoveries. In all of the laboratory and pilot-plant testing, any limiting conditions as to the percentage of salt used, temperatures, feed rates, etc., had affected the fine material more than it had the coarse, and even in making laboratory tests at this time the mill conditions could not be exactly duplicated. Further laboratory testing indicated that a segregation of the crushed ore into a coarse and fine product for roasting might result in some improvement in roast-

A study has been made of the transformation kintetics and morphology in gas-quenched Fe-5 pct Ni alloys. Massive ferrite or nlurtensite was found to form at temperatures in agreement with earlier results. Surface Preparation appeared to have the greatest effect in determining the type of transformation Product formed. Grain size change, subgrain morphology, and dislocation densities of massive ferrite were essen-tinlly invariant functions of cooling rate. The mar-tens~tic structures were typical of transformation in austenite grains of the order of the sample thickness. BY introducing the idea of a massive transformation in dilute iron-base alloys, Gilbert and Owen in 1962 served to stimulate a closer inspection of phase transformations in ferrous systems.' A wealth of literature has followed concerned with the morphology,2-5 transformation mode,2'3'6-8 and thermodynamics of transformations.2,5,9 interesting controversies have resulted from the experimental observations; closer attention has been paid to the definition of massive transformations and still to be resolved is the Ms temperature of pure iron. The purpose of this note is to report some observations made in a detailed kinetic and metallographic examination of the transformations that occur in gas quenched Fe-5 pct Ni. The results are pertinent to the Ms extrapolations that have been made for pure iron and the observed substructure of massively transformed alloys. PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was cast as a 5 lb vacuum induction melted, carbon deoxidized heat. The ingot was hot worked to a strip 0.10 in. thick, decarburized, and cold rolled to final thickness. Specimens were punched to sample shape and decarburized in wet hydrogen at 600°C. The chemistry of test specimens is indicated in Table I. Samples 1 by $ in., by thickness were resistance heated and rapidly cooled in an apparatus as illustrated in Fig. 1. Similar helium quenching apparatuses have been described previously;2,6'10 the distinguishing feature of this apparatus is the nozzle geometry. Twin nozzles with three convergent-divergent, sonic ports were mounted perpendicular to the specimen for quenching purposes. The specimen temperature was monitored with an intrinsic 3 mil chromel-alumel thermocouple spot welded to the specimen and con- nected to an oscilloscope. A single switch stopped the current flow through the specimen, opened a gas flow solenoid valve, and initiated an oscilloscope sweep. Cooling rates were read directly from a photograph of the oscilloscope trace and the quenching rates quoted later were made at a point immediately prior to transformation on the trace. All quenching studies were conducted either under a vacuum of 10"-5 torr or a helium atmosphere. The sample geometry was chosen large enough to permit optical and electron microscopy to be performed on samples. The samples were electropolished for both types of examination in a perchloric-acetic solution. Electron microscopy was conducted on a HU 11A microscope operated at 100 kv. Dislocation densities were determined at the same general operating reflection (110) on foils thick enough to produce Kikuchi patterns. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transformation Temperature Observations and OD-tical Microscopy. The quenching results of this study are illustrated in Fig. -2(a). Samples which were treated in the as-decarburized condition transformed in a manner similar to that reported previously—a decrease in transformation temperature occurred as the quenching rate increased until a plateau region was reached. Within the scatter of the results obtained here, there was no break in the transformation temperature-quenching rate plot. This suggests no change in transformation mode. Further metallographic examination confirmed this observation. A martensitic transformation was obtained for similarly treated samples except that the surface was first electropolished. The Ms temperature was approximately 85°C below the plateau determined for the unpolished samples and cooling rates as slow as 2000°C per sec were adequate for producing marten-site. Analytical and experimental procedures are descrihed for quantitative determination of volume-fraction microporosity in metals by mimorarlio-graphg. The analysis assumes spherical pores but allows for the observed fact that pores or portions of pores smaller than a given thickness do not project an image on the film. Volume-fraction microporosity was measuured in cast low-alloy steel and shown to vary from 0.6 x 10-4 to 10 x 10 depending on mode of solidification and on whether the material was air- or vacuum-cast. The aim of work described herein was to develop a method of quantitative measurement of the volume fraction of microporosity in cast metals. Microporosity, present in nearly all castings and ingots, is always interdendritic in nature and may be large enough to be seen on a polished surface with the naked eye. More generally, it is smaller in size, and its detection more difficult. Three techniques might be considered for measurement of microporosity: 1) lineal analysis of a polished metallographic surface, 2) density measurement, or 3) quantitative microradiography. As will be shown later, volume fractions of porosity in directionally solidified castings may be the order of 10-4 to 10-3; such small amounts of porosity are difficult to identify and measure on a polished surface. Density measurement is also not a suitable technique (for alloys) when the volume fraction of porosity is low. This is because the density of the base metal is often not known within the necessary accuracy, due to microsegregation or partial phase transformations. In general, it is not possible to completely eliminate microsegregation without also altering the porosity. Because of the limitations of the foregoing techniques, quantitative microradiography was employed to determine amount of porosity. In recent work, microradiography has been found to be useful for qualitative measurement of porosity, including determination of size and shape of individual pores;&apos;)&apos; however, quantitative determination of amount of porosity has not been attempted. I) CALCULATION OF VOLUME-FRACTION POROSITY The following analysis employs procedures similar to those of Cahn and Nutting3 and Hilliard.4 Major simplifications are that pores are assumed to be spherical and to be present in sufficiently small quantities that no overlapping occurs. A basic difference from the previous treatments is that the limited "sensitivity" of microradiography is considered. Assume first 1) cavities are spherical and of uniform diameter, 2) cavities are randomly distributed, 3) volume-fraction porosity and specimen thickness to pore radius ratio are sufficiently small that overlapping of the projected images of cavities is negligible, 4) sensitivity is limited (i.e., holes or portions of holes of less than a given thickness do not project an image on the film). The sensitivity, is defined as: where 5 = minimum thickness of void from which an image will be projected on the film and t = specimen thickness. Now, from Fig. 1, it is possible to distinguish between two different types of holes. These are 1) holes whose centers lie within the region t/2 > X > 6/2, where X is distance from one surface of the specimen (positive into the specimen), and 2) holes whose centers lie within the region (6 — r) < X < 6/2, Holes whose centers lie outside X = (6 -r) project no image on the film. These two types of pores are considered separately below. Type 1 Pores. When 6 is greater than 0, the image of a spherical cavity of radius r appears on the film as a circle of radius a which is smaller than r. SUCCESS in any underground mining operation is determined by accessibility of the orebody, which in turn is dependent upon maintenance of passage- ways to the mining zones and temporary support of the voids caused by extraction of ore. This is accomplished by one or a combination of the following methods: timbering, back-filling, pillaring, or, more recently, rock bolting. Timbering has usually been the principal means of maintaining these underground openings necessary for mining operations. Timber, however, does not prevent ground movement beyond the scope of localized sloughing, which is indicated by the gradual failing of the timber itself. Besides this, timbering has always been a costly process, and with the decline of available supplies of timber close to the mining areas, mining men have constantly sought other methods of controlling ground.

Si-Fe single crystals in a number of selected orientations were cold rolled 70 pct and analyzed to obtain quantitative (110) pole figures. Stable end orientations were ddetermined, and the effect of orientation on deformation behavior was investigated. WHEN single crystals are cold rolled sufficiently, they rotate into end orientations that are stable or unchanged in position with additional deformation. The end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals, positioned in holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate polycrystalline conditions during deformation, were determined by Barrett and Levenson.&apos; They found that the sum of the end orientations, a pole figure for all the crystals studied, reproduced the essential features of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron. In. an investigation of Fe-Si alloys, Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl&apos; observed little effect of silicon content on the textures of heavily cold-rolled samples. Since alloys with less than 4 pct Si are known to have the same slip systems as iron," it seems logical to expect that they would also have the same end orientations as those for iron. Whereas Barrett and Levenson in their study of single crystals were interested in the problem of the origin of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron, the present authors are more interested in the final cold-rolled textures of single crystals of Si-Fe from the point of view of their relationship to subsequent recrystallization phenomena which will be reported in another paper. Nevertheless, such points as the tendency of an end orientation not to rotate (stability), the tendency of a pole concentration to spread out, and the tendency of the crystal to widen during cold rolling become interesting separately when the initial orientations are selected already in end orientations. Also the initial orientations having a [I101 axis parallel with the transverse direction, which include the two end orientations (111) [Ti21 and (001) [110], comprise a series that needs further clarification regarding the way such crystals rotate during deformation. Finally the present use of quantitative pole figure methods* represents an advance over the X-ray photographic method employed by Barrett and Levenson in their work on end orientations. The present investigation provides information on the cold-rolling behavior of two groups of Si-Fe crystals: 1-—crystals initially oriented in recognized end orientations for iron crystals with a [I101 direction parallel with the rolling direction, and 2— crystals initially oriented with a [I101 direction 90" to the rolling direction and in the rolling plane. For the second group, there is a 90" range between the (001) [110] orientation and the (110) [001] orientation. Since the 35" portion of this range from (110) [OOl] to (111) Di2] was included in a previous investigation," only the remaining 55" portion from (111) fii2] to (001) [I101 needs further consideration. The end orientations obtained are discussed in connection with the work of Barrett and Levenson, while the observed tendency for lateral flow of crystals in these orientations is treated in terms of the theory of Hibbard and Yen.&apos; Lateral flow according to the theory increases with deviation of the plane containing the rolling direction and the slip direction from a position perpendicular to the plane of rolling.
