The rapid development of the southern coal and iron-ore fields during the past few years, and especially in the latter half of the year 1886, and the avidity with which everything relating to the industrial situation there is read and absorbed by the professional and non-professional public, has led to the preparation of a brief paper for the Institute upon a comparison of the raw materials available on or about January 1st, 1887, at three prominent centers of consumption. While disclaiming any originality or priority in the treatment of the resources of these districts, where so much valuable and interesting work has been performed in the past by several members of the Institute, we hope that the presentation of some analyses of samples personally secured by us in the several districts selected, and prepared for a comparative study of the character of the materials actually used and to be used by the furnaces of the "New

In the rapidly growing industry of elemental-phosphorus production from western phosphates, most of the vanadium and chromium contained in the phosphate rock collect in the byproduct ferro-phosphorus. Results are presented of a completed laboratory project, which developed a tristage crystallization and hydrolysis process for recovering strategic vanadium and chromium, as well as a valuable phosphorus product, after extracting these elements from the ferro-phosphorus by roasting and leaching. THE Phosphoria formation in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah contains the Nation's largest reserve of phosphate rock. A unique feature of the Phosphoria beds is their content of a fraction of a percentage each of vanadium, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. Vanadium is the most important as to quantity and value. Small-scale tests by the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oregon, in 1947, indicated that most of the vanadium in the phosphate rock collects in the ferrophosphorus product of smelting. Subsequent electric smelting operations to produce elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock (experimentally by TVA and industrially at Pocatello, Idaho) have shown that the vanadium and other metals in the rock are to a large extent recovered in concentrated form in the ferrophosphorus byproduct. This paper reports the results of completed laboratory research on the recovery of vanadium from ferrophosphorus, which was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines at Albany in 1948 as the first phase of a project entitled, "Vanadium and Fluorine from Western Phosphates." The various vanadium-recovery methods investigated, including the roast-leach method that showed most promise and was studied in greatest detail, are discussed in an earlier publication.' Subsequent systematic study of the roast-leach method of extracting vanadium from western ferrophosphorus developed the more effi- cient tristage crystallization process, which is the subject of this paper. Process Development The investigations were made on ferrophosphorus produced in the electric smelting of elemental phosphorus from western phosphate rock. The TVA provided two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced in pilot plant smelting of phosphatic shale from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho. The Westvaco Chemical Div. of the Food Machinery & Chemical Corp. supplied two sample lots of ferrophosphorus produced by its phosphorus smelter at Pocatello, Idaho. The analyses of all four lots are shown in Table I. Westvaco lot B was the starting material for the more recent tests. The roast-leach process for recovering vanadium from western ferrophosphorus, as originally developed, employed the following principal steps: Roasting of a mixture of pulverized ferrophosphorus, soda ash, and salt; extraction of the water-soluble vanadium, phosphorus, and chromium compounds from the calcine by leaching, settling, and decanta-tion of the pregnant solution; primary crystallization of trisodium phosphate from the pregnant solution; purification of the trisodium phosphate crystals by dissolution in water and secondary crystallization; purification of the pregnant vanadium solution from the primary crystallization step by adding calcium chloride to precipitate calcium phosphate; and hydrolysis of vanadium red cake from the puri-

Hot springs, geysers, steam-emanating fumaroles- these creatures of nature were until recently little more than geological curiosities, but today they are exciting the interest of engineers around the world for it has been shown that such hyperthermal areas can be profitably harnessed by man to provide heat and power for his communities. Although water from hot springs was used centuries ago to heat some Korean dwellings, is being used today by one-third of Iceland's population for similar purposes, and is finding industrial applications in New Zealand and elsewhere, the most dramatic use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam in 1904. Eight years later after a quarrel with the local power company, the Count installed his first steam turbine, a unit of 250 kw capacity.

In this paper oil initially in place is calculated by the various methods commonly used for analysis of water drive fields using data available as time progresses. Rate and pressure are predicted by means of the same methods using data available at the end of two years' history. These predictions are then compared with subsequent performance permitting an evaluation of the methods, which are Modified Schilthuis, Simplified Hurst, van Everdingen et al (1952), and the Electric Analyzer. INTRODUCTION Several variations of the material balance equation, differing in the term used to evaluate water influx, are in common use for estimating oil in place, predicting rate and volume of water influx, and forecasting producing rates and reservoir pressure in water drive reservoirs. The electric analyzer with an electrical network set up to simulate the oil reservoir and aquifer and their contained fluids may be used for the same purpose. Examples of the application of one or another of these methods have appeared in the literature. The accuracy and reliability of the material balance for calculating oil in place have been covered.' However, there have been few articles in which more than one method has been applied to an actual field allowing a comparison. It is felt that a field example, simple in nature, where the Modified Schilthuis, Simplified Hurst, van Everdingen et al (1952), and the Electric Analyzer have been applied would be of benefit in providing an evaluation of these methods as to their comparative usefulness and reliability in calculating initial oil in place and predicting performance. The Torchlight Tensleep reservoir is a small field in a large aquifer. The reservoir oil is greatly under-saturated, having a bubble point of only 55 psi and 2 cu ft/bbl of gas in solution. Changes in the reservoir volume factor in the range of pressures encountered are small, meaning little error in converting production to reservoir conditions. The pressure has declined from 1,618 psi initially to 137 psi during the first four and one-half years. Water production has been negligible. For Torchlight, the material balance equation as discussed later is considerably simplified by the omission of terms having to do with free gas. Thus with simpler equations, less variables to consider, the large pressure drop, the absence of a gas phase, and rapid pressure-rate adjustments, which mean an unusual amount of history in a short time, the reservoir appears suitable for comparing the methods listed above. GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE FIELD The Torchlight field is located on the eastern side of the Big Horn Basin, Big Horn County, Wyo., approximately 3 miles east of the town of Basin. The Tensleep reservoir was discovered in September, 1947. It lies at a depth of about 3,000 ft and produces oil of 35" API gravity. A total of five wells have been completed in the Tensleep, but only four are now producing. The reservoir is well defined in areal extent in that a total of 13 wells have penetrated the Ten-

A modified Peierls model is Presented for the rationalization of the asymmetric plastic behavior of single crystals of bcc metals. The model assumes that the asymmetry of slip arises from a tendency toward asymnetric splitting of the a/2[111] screw dislocation. The approach differs from former theories however insofar as it assumes that the splitting is so minor ttut only the core energy is modified and that no real partial dislocations exist. As a consequence, the concepts of a line energy of a partial dislocation, interaction between partial dislocations, constriction energies, and stacking fault energies are not invoked. Instead the present analysis is based on a specialization of the Peierls mechanism which assumes an asymmetric dislocation core which is modified by the effective stress and permits cross slip. The theoretical predictions on the stress-temperature -strain rate and orientation relationship agree qualitatively with the limited experimental data that are currently available. Additional experimental work over wider ranges of conditions is suggested to provide more complete evaluation of the possible validity of this theory. RECENT experimental investigations on the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals have confirmed the existence of several unique orientation effects. These will be described with the aid of the standard stereographic projection shown in Fig. 1. If slip were determined exclusively by crystal symmetry, the deformation characteristics would be symmetrical about X; = 0 and independent of whether the specimen were subjected to a tension or a compression stress, regardless of what combinations of slip planes might be operative. Experiments, however, reveal that neither of these symmetry based predictions are valid. A schematic representation of the commonly observed asymmetry of both the yield stress and the plane of slip is shown in Fig. 2. A reversal of the direction of stressing results in an inversion of the asvmmetric behavior. 1) Asymmetry bf Yielding. A detailed investigation on the asymmetric yielding in an Fe-2.7 pct Si alloy was repoEted by Tabka, Tikeuchi, and Furubayashi,1 Similar trends have been observed by Keh and Nakada on iron,' Stein on molybdenum,3 Bowen, Christian, and Taylor4 on columbium, Sherwood, Guiu, Kim, and pratt5 on Ta, Cb, and Mo. The degree of asymmetry not only depends on the atomic number and alloying but, in all cases that have been examined, it also increases with a decrease in the test temperature. 2) Asymmetry of the Slip Plane. Asymmetric $I-~: curves of the type shown in Fig. 2 have been found for several Fe-Si alloys6-8,1 and columbium.4 There is general agre_ement that near X: = 30 deg slip occurs by the [111](211) mode so that ?1 = 30 deg. A., operating five dredges in gold and platinum on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Russell H. Bennett has been elected a director of Placer Development, Ltd. with head office in Vancouver, B. Reed, Jr. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, "Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate," July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing "super"-concentrates prepared from magnetite or "blue dust" into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloys to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential. ?

The transition from Larger word type computers to the small byte oriented micro-computers has allowed specialized software to be placed directly under the control of the people requiring solutions. In addition, with the advent of interactive graphics, many complex geological and mining engineering problems can be solved graphically, thereby further forcing obsolescence on larger computers. Although the industry has not yet caught on or taken full advantage of this fact, some companies have begun to move in this direction. One such case is the Coal Evaluation System presently in use at Manalta Coal Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta. This system, designed to allow interactive analysis of simple to complex coal deposits, leads one from geophysical/core log data, to geological modelling, strip or open pit design, equipment selection, cost estimation, and cash flow analysis. The micro-computer system used is portable, stands alone, and costs less than $120,000. It is the purpose of this paper to present the coal evaluation system and its development methodology which maximizes the use of the newest computer technology. Further, in order to illustrate the practical application of the system, an example application based upon a large operating coal mine will be discussed.

WHEREVER the amount of work renders it practicable the plan of using permanent standard solutions, in connection with the colorimetric carbon test, affords such manifold advantages that it is to be strongly recommended. That it has not attained a wider and more general application, is mainly due to the fact that, as the method is generally employed, the difficulty attending the production of the colors, and their doubtful stability when produced, have been only too evident to those who have undertaken their composition. The old method of using standard solutions made from sugar, coffee, etc., has always been hampered by the tendency of the colors to change upon exposure to the light, and the consequent liability to serious error, unless they are closely watched. Appreciating these difficulties, while recognizing the desirability of permanent colors, Mr. Magnus Troilius, at the suggestion of Prof. F. L. Erkmann, investigated the properties of cobalt, copper and ferric chlorides, with the view of determining their efficacy in the production of standard solutions. His results, as obtained, seem to have been satisfactory, but his treatment failed to eliminate many of the objections that have rendered the use of organic colors undesirable. The

The design of a centrifugal slurry pump is approached as a compromise between efficiency and wear life of the wetted parts. This compromise is effected by the choice of proper materials of construction and geometry. However even the most optimally designed pump will fail if due consideration is not given to its installation and operation. System head curves and hydraulic profiles are discussed as useful tools to be used in the operational analysis of a slurry system.

INTRODUCTION The early history of the chloride process has been recorded in a chapter of a Bureau of Mines bulletin (9 by one of the inventors of a chloride process, Stewart Croasdale, who is famous for the Pohle- Croasdale Process. The earliest use of chlorine in metallurgy was in 1557 by Bartholome Medina. But apparently even earlier there was knowledge that salt could be used in gold and silver extraction because a treatise, de la Pyrotechnica, published in 1540 in Venice, asserted that silver could be obtained from its ores by a wet salt process. In 1609 a priest, Alonzo Barba, invented a process using a copper vessel and boiling a solution of salt to extract silver chloride ores. The copper vessel was, of course, one of the reactants. This led to the Kronke process introduced in Chile in 1860 which substituted cuprous chloride for the kettle. A major step was taken in Europe in the late 1700's to chloridize roasted silver ores in combination with amalgamation using iron to reduce the silver chloride. By 1843 the Augustan process was introduced. Ores were roasted with salt and leached with a saturated salt solution. The silver chlorides passed into solution from which silver was precipitated by copper. In 1848 sodium or calcium thiosulfate solution of silver chloride was suggested by Dr. John Percy, and the idea was applied in 1856 by Von Patera in Bohemia.

IN the apparatus for measuring internal friction shown in fig. 1, a modification of that described by Kê,1,2 the parasitic energy loss or background is equivalent to a Q-1 of approximately 4x10-5. This low value of background was obtained by using a jeweler's collet of appropriate size for the upper support, eliminating lateral motion without immersing the bob in oil, and designing the bob to reduce air resistance. The pendulum is supported on the frame through a snug fitting, sliding rotary joint (fig. I-B). A slight twist of the top imparts essentially pure torsional motion to the pendulum. No evidence of energy loss in the sliding joint has been observed. In the bob (E) steel balls are used in the torsion arm, and the bottom is filled with lead giving a total weight of 94 g. A lighter bob may be used for small diameter specimens. Another bob was a solid disc with provision for adding discs to change the frequency. The oscillating image of the filament is recorded on a revolving drum camera (fig. 1-3) driven by a synchronous motor. This allows use of frequencies higher than can be measured visually on a glass scale. Samples varying in diameter from 0.020 to 0.075 in. have been measured, the frequencies have ranged from 1 to 12 cps, and the maximum strain varied from 0.5 to 10x10-5. With appropriate modification the sample may be placed in a thermostat. The apparatus may also be used to measure the shear modulus. In the examples of measurement given in table I the internal friction of Permendur and the 46.8 Ni-Fe alloy are due, for the most part, to magneto-mechanical hysteresis8 (elastic hysteresis accompanying stress-induced magnetostriction) which depends on strain amplitude and increases with annealing. The rapid development of the Mesabi range has been a matter of much wonder to those familiar with ore-deposits elsewhere, and much skepticism was shown when " millions of tons of ore on the Mesabi" was first reported. Now, however, with over 8,000,000 tons to its credit at the close of 1896, a prospect of 3,000,000 more this year, and more ore " in sight" than ever before, it is evident that the first claims for the range were not so greatly exaggerated as perhaps even those who made them thought they were at that time. An explanation of the ease with which these deposits have been explored is found in their mode of occurrence. Lying in flat beds and near the surface, and only exceptionally occurring under a taconite " capping," the prospector had only to sink a few vertical test-pits on a fortyacre tract down to the rock to be reasonably sure whether his property contained ore or not. If he found ore in one or more of these preliminary pits, he would then fill in with more pits until the ore-area was entirely outlined by test-pits from 200 to 400 feet apart. In the early days of the range the testing was almost entirely done by digging pits with pick and shovel. When water was encountered, work had to be stopped, unless a steam pumping-plant was put in, resulting in greatly-increased expenses. Latterly, drills have been used with great success in continuing the exploration after water has been struck in the pit, rendering further progress with pick and shovel impracticable. There are several kinds of drills in use. The diamond-drill is largely used, and possesses the advantage of being in readiness to drill rock if thought advisable, the taconite being very hard and almost impossible to drill except by the use of diamonds. Some form of churn-drill has been much used. This may be either a steam- or a horse-power-drill. The principle is the same in each, the cutting being done by percussion instead of by rotation, as in the case of the diamond-drill. A churning motion is given by passing a rope from the top of the

UNTIL a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrofluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acidproof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment.

A RECENT paper1 described, by means of stereographic pole figures, the preferred orientations produced by cold-rolling low-carbon steel of automobile-body grade. It was found that the surface of the sheet exhibited a deformation texture significantly different from the texture possessed by the inside of the sheet. Efforts to produce the surface texture by buffing a sample exhibiting the normal or inside texture, using a copper lap, have not been successful. In view of the data collected, by Kurdjumow and Sachs2, it was suggested that the surface texture might be the result of partial recrystallization of the normal or inside texture. The recrystallization texture of cold-rolled mild steel was studied by Goss3, but he did not use the pole-figure method, so that his conclusions were in need of verification. For these reasons the work reported in the present paper was undertaken. It had two objectives: (1) to study the general behavior of cold-rolled mild steel on recrystallization below the critical temperature A,, and (2) to attempt experimentally a demon-stration of the genesis suggested above for the surface texture in cold-rolled steel. The material was that used by Gensamer and Mehl, cold-rolled to 97.5 per cent reduction in thickness. Fig. 1 is an X-ray pinhole photo-gram of this material, taken with the beam transmitted perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, using a molybdenum target at 35 kv. with no filter. It is typical of the inside texture, but in it the deformation texture is better developed than in the samples that showed a well developed difference between the inside and surface samples. Specimens from this sheet, which was 0.005 in. thick, were annealed for 5 min. at various temperatures in a lead bath. After about 0.0005 in. had been etched from both surfaces, X-ray photograms were prepared, using the technique described in the earlier paper'.

Conclusive evidence is given showing that the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution follows mainly the over-all equation A similar equation can also be written for the dissolution of silver. Theoretical derivation of the velocity equation for this reaction has been obtained, which describes quantitatively the experimental facts. The equation is as follows: where [CN-] and [O2] = the concentrations (in moles/ml) of cyanide and dissolved oxygen, respectively. DcN- and Do2 = the diffusion coefficients of cyanide and dissolved oxygen; 1.83 x 10-5 and 2.76 x 10-5 cm2 sec-1, respectively. A = the surface area of the metal in contact with the aqueous phase, in cm S = the thickness of the boundary layer; varies between 2 and 9 x 10-3 cm, depending on the speed and method of agitation. Rate being expressed in g. equiv. sec-1. INTRODUCTION During recent years a number of papers have been published on the kinetics of dissolution of gold and silver in cyanide solution.1,6 The authors agree that the rate of dissolution is diffusion-controlled, but disagree regarding the mechanism of the reaction. Some authors'-3 support the Bodlander equations: The apparently conflicting results, when critically reviewed, are concordant and lead to the conclusion that the proper equation for the dissolution reaction should be only Eq. 1. This conclusion is based on the following facts: 1) For every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved one mole O2 was consumed. 2) For every 1 equivalent of metal dissolved, 2 moles of cyanide were consumed.' 3) Hydrogen peroxide is formed during the dissolution of gold or silver, and for every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved, one mole H2O2 was produced.1,2 The fact that Kudryk and Kellogg4 did not detect H2O2 during the dissolution of gold should not throw doubt on the many affirmative reports of other investigators. Lund2 has shown that depending on the crystalline nature of the silver surface, (e.g. method of etching the sample) H2O2 may undergo catalytic decomposition heterogeneously according to: Further Kudryk and Kellogg4 carried out their experiments in the presence of 0.5% KC1 to achieve a greater electrolytic conductivity, and Matsudaira7 has shown that H2O2 is catalytically decomposed (homogeneously) in the presence of C1- ion in alkaline solution. 4) Experiments carried out by Boonstra8 and Lund2 showed that the dissolution of gold and silver respectively in KCN + H2O2 in the absence of oxygen was a slow process. Thus the reaction takes place to a minor extent only. Further kinetic studies showed that: 1) The rate of dissolution depends on the surface area of the metal in contact with the liquid phase, thus indicating that the process of dissolution is a heterogeneous process. 2) The rate of dissolution depends on the speed of stirring,5,6 thus indicating that the process is controlled by a physical phenomenon.

THE organization of the Board of Directors was effected Tuesday afternoon in ' executive session. Messrs. Bassett,. Buehler, Cates, Daveler, Eavenson, Eilers, Elliott, Evans, Guess, Lovejoy, Moulton, Rickard, Tally, Turner,, Wraith and Wright being pres¬ent. Messrs. Tally, Bassett, Rickard, Mathews and Cates were chosen to form the Executive Committe with Mr. Tally as Chairman, and Messrs. Krumb, Guess and Moulton for the Finance Committee with Mr. Krumb as chairman. Karl Eilers was reelected as Treasurer and H. Foster Bain as Secretary, after which the Directors adjourned for the usual dinner reported elsewhere. At the open session of the Board, at which in addition Messrs. Allen and McAuliffe were present, the work of organization was continued with appointments to committees as listed herewith. Various actions of the Executive and Finance Committees were confirmed, the budget for 1931 formally approved, the meeting dates for the year adopted, 34 new Members and Associates, 13 Junior Members and 31 Student Associates admitted by election and transfer and 29 resignations accepted.

Ore microscopic study of copper-bearing shale at the Creta mine in southwestern Oklahoma reveals a variety of copper sulfide grains and shows that each has originated by replacement of original constituents In the Permian Flowerpot Shale at Creta. The largest grains, about 120 pm in diameter, are replacements of megaspores with triletes morphology. Their interiors are shown by Auger microprobe analyses to be organic matter. The interior organic matter and the spore exines have been replaced by anilite and djurleite. Digenite and anilite replace collomorphic pyrite averaging 40 pm in diameter. Grains 10 pm or less in d~ameter are mostly euhedral, six-sided, platy crystals that have anllite compositions and are pseudomorphous after pyrrhotzte. Other 10 pm copper sulfide grains are pseudomorphous after octahedra and cubes of pyrite. The results of this study indicate that the copper minerals are epigenetic and were deposited from fluids introduced into the Creta shale when it was relatively uncompacted and permeable. The shale served as a favorable reducing environment that contained a source of sulfur in the form of pyrite and pyrrhotite.
