Science attracts the attention and interest of an individual or an industry in general only in proportion to the apparent direct application to its immediate welfare or benefit. Engineering accomplishments, as aphlied science, therefore receive more recognition than the scientific discoveries on which they are based. Even self-evident truth needs endless repetition before recognition: engineering as applied science cannot advance beyond the science on which it is founded. Scientific research, and discovery, is sometimes forced by the limitations recognized by those active in its development for the use of society and industry and sometimes results from an apparently superficially illogical curiosity about natural phenomena. Research has received inadequate support except in industries born in the laboratory, the chemical and electrical industries, from which many lessons might well be drawn by their elder associates. The rapid growth of these industries has been largely due to close cooperation of scientists and engineers. Most rapid advance is made when the research worker and the engineer keep in close touch with each other's ideas and problems. Many of the developments of modern industry are based on discoveries buried for years in scientific journals because the "time was not ripe" at their discovery. The situation with regard to utilization of coal is quite the oppositre. The fundamental facts in regard to the scientific aspects of the problem of developing the energy from coal are scarcely known. The engineer, without much scientific cooperation, has accomplished much in increasing the number of kilowatt-hours per pound of coal from 0.31 in 1919 to 0.69 in 1934, in increasing the 1000 gross ton-miles of freight hauled from 12.2 to 16.4 per ton of coal in the same period, in fuel economy in production of coke, and in developing the production of motor fuel in Germany and England by hydrogenation of coal. This lack of scientific research on the utilization of our most important natural resource, coal, has been due undoubtedly in large part to the reluctance of investigators to study the interrelationships involved in the complicated processes in which coal is used. TWO types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent on the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination—the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight—has a value of 1.00. According to the table there are "blind spots" in the series. This is true particularly among the lowest ratios, which are most used to suspend the major part of the weight when great depths are reached. The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. In the use of the apparatus purchased for the new chemical laboratories of the university, no piece has given us more satisfaction, or has been a greater success, than a new still which is the subject of this paper. In the designing of this still I had two definite objects in view ; one, the utilizing of steam from the large 60 horse-power boiler used in heating the building, and the other, a provision for making distilled water with gas, when steam from the heating-plant was not available. The still is encased in wrought-iron, with a lining of asbestos, and is provided with a float which automatically regulates the flow of water from the supply-pipe. It was made for me by G. J. M?rrle, Pforzheim, Germany, and was imported by Messrs. Eimer & Amend, of New York City. It is a beautiful piece of apparatus, and the workmanship is excellent in every detail. The essential parts of this apparatus will be understood by consulting the accompanying figures, but a few words of explanation may be appropriate. The still has a capacity of seven gallons, and is made of heavy copper, tin-lined. It has a water-gauge showing the height of the water in the still, also an exit for steam, and safetyvalve, V; inlet for steam through a coiled perforated block-tin pipe; also an outlet, 0, for cleaning out the still; and there is also a heavy

Chemical processing is descended from alchemy, which developed our major lixivants. The profession might have done more if it had been less preoccupied with turning base metals into gold-a process that still hasn't been developed. Georg Agricola, over 400 years ago, gave us ten recipes for "aqua valens" to part gold and silver, and described cementation of gold and silver on base metals. His text stood for 200 years, by which time heap roasting, leaching and cementation were winning copper from pyrites at Rio Tinto and the Barba furnace was distilling mercury from the ores of Almaden.

CONVENTIONAL usage defines emery as a natural aggregate of corundum and magnetite. Because emery bodies contain abundant spinel two types are recognized, spinel-bearing and spinel- free. Watson and Steiger1 introduced the name spinellite for emery in which spinel is a major constituuent, but this term has not been generally adopted. Spinel emery grades locally into spinel magnetite rocks with or without accessory corundum. Even this variety has been used commercially in the past. The term emery therefore applies to natural aggregates composed of corundum and magnetite; corundum, magnetite, and spinel; and spinel and magnetite.

Abstract-A borehole sonde wing a 252Cf neutron source and a Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector was field tested in a coal bed in Belmont County, Ohio, to ascertain whether such a device could be useful as a coal-exploration tool. As the sonde was lowered into the borehole, successive spectra were accumulated over short time intervals. The intensities of the capture gamma rays from hydrogen and of decay gamma rays from aluminum were determined simultaneously in each spectrum. A log of the intensities versus depth shows the depth and thickness of the coal bed.

Self-diffusion coefficients have been measured for iron in wustite (700° to 1000°C) and for cobalt in cobaltous oxide (800&apos; to 1350°C) by means of radio-isotopes. Both sectioning and decrease of surface-activity methods have been used and a particular shortcoming of the latter method has been disclosed for wustite. The effects of oxygen pressure on the composition of cobaltous oxide and on the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in the oxide have been established. The effect of the preparation conditions of the cobalt-oxide specimens on the diffusion measurements has been determined. It has been concluded that diffusion of cobalt occurs via vacant cation sites and that a cobaltous-oxide disk reaches equilibrium with its environment in a time which is very short compared with that needed for diffusion of the radio-isotope. THE availability of radioactive isotopes in recent years has permitted the measurement of many self-diffusion coefficients which were hitherto impossible to determine. With the advent of radioactivity, the method of measuring diffusion coefficients has also changed. The earlier sectioning method by which the concentration profile of the diffusing species was determined in the diffusion specimen has often been rejected in favor of the decrease of surface-activity method first developed by Von Hevesy,&apos; and extended by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix,&apos; and Raynor, Thomassen, and Rouse." With the experimental arrangement where an infinitely thin deposit of tracer is diffused into a semi-infinite cylinder, the decrease in activity of the active face due to diffusion of the tracer into the specimen is measured by counting the active face before and after diffusion. Under these conditions, the appropriate solution of the diffusion equation is R = e*(l-<K/Z) [1] where R is the ratio of the counting rates after-to-before diffusion, $& is the Gaussian error integral of \/Z, and Z is defined as Z = p2Dt, p being the linear-absorption coefficient of the detected radiation in the diffusion specimen, D the self-diffusion coefficient, and t the diffusion time. In the older sectioning method the concentration distribution of the tracer is found after diffusion by analysing thin parallel sections cut from the active face of the diffusion specimen. As seen from the solution of Fick&apos;s second law for the distribution of an infinitely thin source after diffusion into a semi-infinite cylinder the log of the concentration plotted against x&apos; will be a straight line of slope log e/4 Dt. The diffusion coefficient thus can be calculated directly. The units of the tracer concentration are completely arbitrary, since any change in units does not change the slope of the log c vs x2 lot. Although both of the above methods have been widely used, a thorough experimental comparison does not appear to have been made. The application of Bingham&apos;s law to the behavior of drilling fluids in a rotational viscometer permits the expression of viscometric data in terms of plastic viscosity and yield value, the flow properties of a plastic fluid. A commercially available rotational viscometer is described, and when modified to a multispeed type viscometer, is shown to provide a simple and convenient instrument for the measurement of these properties both in the laboratory and in the field. The data obtained are shown to be useful in defining and understanding mud control problems relating to chemical treatment and to the hydro-dynamic behavior of muds. INTRODUCTION The highly complex drilling fluids which are required for deep drilling often give rise to new and unusual mud control problems. Rapid and economic solutions to these problems may require, on the one hand, better understanding of the changes which contaminants and chemical treating agents produce in the colloidal and inert solids of the mud, or, on the other hand, closer control of the hydrodynamic behavior of the mud. The latter objective obviously can be achieved only if a correct rheological analysis of the flow behavior of drilling muds is available and if this is accompanied by the appropriate rheological measurements. The purpose of this paper is to describe such measurements in the field, and to show how the resulting data can be of value in solving difficult mud control problems. It is now generally recognized that Bingham&apos;s law of plastic flow can be utilized in describing the hydrodynamic behavior of drilling fluids in the non-turbulent flow range. Beck, Nuss, and Dunn&apos; have recently applied this law to the flow of mud in small pipes, and Rogers2 has reviewed the rather extensive literature on this subject. So far, however, the use of Bingham&apos;s law has been restricted to the analysis of mud flow in pipes or capillary tubes, and it has not been directly applied to the flow in rotational viscometers. In the work to be reprted, the Reiner-Riwlin3 equation for the flow of a plastic fluid in a rotational viscometer has been utilized to permit the expression of multispeed viscometric data in terms of plastic viscosity and yield value. the two absolute flow properties of a plastic fluid. With regard to the application of these measurements, the calculation of the relationship between pumping rate and pressure drop, both in the drill pipe and annular space, has long been a subject of interest. Beck, Nuss, and Dunn,&apos; following Caldwell and Babbitt: base their calculations for non-turbulent flow on Buckingham&apos;s integration of Bingham&apos;s law for pipe flow and measurements of the plastic viscosity (rigidity in their terminology) and yield value. In the case of turbulent flow, Fanning&apos;s equation is employed, and the pressure drop is relatively insensitive to the flow properties of the mud. Since flow in the drill pipe is likely to be turbulent at usual circulation rates, the plastic flow properties will chiefly influence the pressure drop in the annular space. As pointed out by Beck,&apos; the control of this component of the total pressure drop may be of special importance where lost circulation problems are encountered. Other hydrodynamic problems to which it should be possible to apply measurements of the plastic flow properties include predictions of the velocity distribution in non-turbulent flow and the critical velocity for transition to turbulence. Plastic viscosity and yield value. as abmlute flow propertie.;, will reflect the colloidal or surface-active behavior of the solids present in drilling fluids. Measurements of these properties should therefore find application in developing a better understanding of such behavior and in characterizing the type and condition of these solids. Garrison and ten Brink have utilized multispeed viscometric data in this manner. although their measurements were not expressed in terms of the absolute flow properties. In connection with the application of these measurements, it should be recognized that the presently used one-point viscosity measurements are relative in nature. The API Stormer 600-rpm measurement, for example. is a function of both plastic viscosity and yield value, as well as mud weight, and will often be misleading when its application to mud control problems is attempted. The use of portable radon detectors has become routine in reconnaissance uranium surveys where water and sediment samples are analyzed in field labs for radon and radium, and in detailed work where drill hole locations are pinpointed by field determinations of radon in soil gas from shallow holes. During the drilling program itself, however, very few operators are taking advantage of radon and radium analyses to decide whether a barren drill hole was a near miss or whether the immediate area can be written off. The technique is effective both above and below the water table.

The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company expanded computer usage in the areas of engineering and production analyses by establishing a time-share terminal with Ohio University. Through the use of a graduate student on a consulting basis this relationship has enabled the company to gain computer programming capabilities in the scientific languages such as FORTRAN IV. The engineering function has benefitted from programs which dealt with mine power distribution and geostatistical analysis. Additionally, the University has modified a group of simulation programs developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute so they are interactive enabling data entry from the remote terminal.

THIS paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calcu-lation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 250 ft. per 1000.

The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.
