Brief laboratory investigations are described which attempt to determine optimum .sand concentrations in gel-sand and oil-sand1 well-treatments. The investigations apply to the case where sand acts as a propping agent in formation fractures. Both analytically and experimentally it is demonstrated that optimum sand concentrations can be defined. It is difficult to translate laboratory results to field treatments, however, since the relative distribution of sand and fluid in fractures may not be the same as injected. This is because fluid may penetrate the furtherest narrow portions of fractures, which would not pass sand. Optimum concentration of a monolayer of Ottawa sand in fractures of 0.025-in. width at the usual range of pressures encountered in treatments appears to be about 95 to 2 lb/gal. of gel. An investigation of abrasion of rock-walls by sand in treatments, described in the Appendix, shows that such abrasion is not probable in significant amounts. INTRODUCTION Experience in the Spraberry formation of West Texas, as well as in other formations, has shown that. sand is a necessary and vital part of gel-sand and oil-sand treatments. Many observers of treatments have also concluded that there seems to be an optimum range of sand concentration for these injections. Brief laboratory investigations were made at Battelle Memorial Institute to study flow in fractures with different sand concen- trations. To investigate the existence and range of optimum concentrations in the laboratory, however, necessitates knowledge of the mechanism by which the sand aids in increasing subsequent production. The action of sand in fractures is usually thought to be either that of a propping agent, thus providing a greater effective formation permeability; that of an abrasive in eroding fill material in fractures; or that of an abrasive eroding rock-wall irregularities along fracture surfaces. Investigations described in the Appendix show that sand does not appear to erode rock-wall materials appreciably. In a subsequent paper it is reasoned, at least for the Spraberry formation of West Texas, that the primary action of sand is not in removing fill materials in fractures. In this formation, and probably others, too, the main effect of sand appears to be that of a propping agent. Both analytical and experimental investigations were made for the case of a monolayer of sand acting as a propper, in which sand concentrations were determined that would, after treatment, permit flow of the maximum quantities of oil from the formation into a well. If too few sand grains are injected into fractures in which the bottom hole pressure has decreased appreciably below the original formation pressure, the confining pressure in the formation may become relatively large, thus compress the rock-walls around the sand grains, essentially close fractures, and so decrease the subsequent flow of oil. Similarly, if too much sand is used, the flow of oil will he impeded by the volume of sand present. Rates and patterns of gas flow in an experimental blast furnace were investigated by measurements, at three levels, of gas compo-sitions and temperatures and by direct determination of gas transit time by a new method employing mercury vapor as a tracer. Infer-ences were drawn about localized reaction zones and the mechanism of the onset of' channeling. LACK of precise knowledge of the nature of gas movement in the blast furnace has always been an impediment to better understanding of the blastfurnace process as a whole. The effects upon operation of various types of charge distribution are very largely brought about by the modifications to gas flow which they occasion. Intelligent evaluation of these effects demands a better understanding of the factors influencing gas flow and the ways in which the flow pattern is altered by conditions existing in the stock column. The same knowledge is required before a fundamental approach can be made to the problem of establishing optimum lines for new furnaces. An experimental furnace is operated at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Advantage was taken of experimental operation to conduct an investigation to develop and evaluate methods of study which could be applied later to industrial furnaces. The gas composition and temperature determinations were made as a preliminary study so far as gas flow was concerned but yielded significant information relating to other processes occurring within the furnace. The direct measurement of gas transit times by the mercury-vapor method constituted the major object of the investigation. Development of the mercury-vapor method was carried out while the data on gas composition and temperature were being collected. A complete description of the principle and development of the mercury-vapor method is beyond the scope of this paper but is available elsewhere. The results obtained and some consideration of the method's effectiveness and its potential value in the study of industrial problems will be treated here. DESCRIPTION OF FURNACE The general lines of the experimental blast furnace are shown in Fig. 1. The hearth diameter was 3 ft at the beginning of the investigation, and this was later enlarged to 3 ft 9 in. and finally to 4 ft to increase capacity. Tuyere to stockline height is 21 ft 4 in. The bosh depth is 3 ft 4 in. over which it opens to a width of 5 ft, and this diameter is carried up for 2 ft in a cylindrical section. The inwall batter of 1/2 in. per ft. is considerably less than in larger installations This may have influenced the movement of gaseous and solid materials. The furnace is inside a laboratory building and is charged from outside by a skip and hoist. Feeding into the first of three bell chambers, the stock is distributed by rotating the upper bell, the other two being used to obtain an effective gas seal. A STUDY of the structures arising from the decomposition of the a solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-Al systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution-the Widmanstätten structure-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the -y phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series-that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-which at present seems the only alternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the a and in the precipitation of the -y phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point of view.

FOLLOWING the techniques used by Beck and co-worker~ "~ the characteristics of selective growth in the recrystallization of a zone-refined aluminum single crystal, rolled 80 pct at -78°C in the (110)[112] orientation, have been studied. The material was 99.999+ pct pure. The as-grown crystal had a resistance ratio, R(298°K) /R(4,2°K), of approximately 5000. The method of preparation of the single crystals and the necessary precautions in handling them during rolling in order to avoid recrystallization in locally distorted regions were described in an earlier paper.3 The rolling texture of this zone-refined aluminum crystal is practically identical with that of less pure aluminum crystals rolle! in the same orientation, i.e., a very sharp (110)[112]. Random nuclei were provided by artificial nuclea-tion by abrading one face of the rolled crystal on 600-grit emery paper in a random fashion. The thin layer of disturbed metal recrystallized at room temperature into fine grains almost immediately. An X-ray diffraction pattern was taken from the abraded surface of the crystal, and the relative intensities of the various reflection peaks were compared with those obtained from a powder specimen. As shown in Fig. 1, the relative intensities of the various peaks from the recrystallized layer varied somewhat from experiment to experiment, depending presumably on the abrading technique. However, the texture of the recrystallized layer produced by this method is nearly as random as that of a powder specimen. Fig. 2 shows the texture determined from the "growth side" (face opposite the abraded surface) of the crystal after it was kept at room temperature for 100 hr. The specimen was only partially recrystallized, as shown by the remaining deformation texture. The new orientations are derived from the recrystallized grains grown through the thickness of the crystal from the "nucleation side" (the abraded surface). Fig. 3 shows the texture after complete recrystallization produced by annealing at 60°C for 1 hr. The arrows indicate 40-deg rotation around the (111) axes of the deformation texture. The microstructure of a completely recrystallized specimen is shown in Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the texture of the re-crystallized grains grown from the nucleation side to the growth side is essentially the same as that observed in less pure aluminum' (99.994 pct) and dilute alloyz crystals rolled in the same orientation. IN November 1939, on behalf of the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co., the author undertook the study of the problem of utilizing the dolomite of northwestern Ohio for the manufacture of calcined magnesia suitable for use in refractories. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the unfailing assistance and encouragement throughout this work from the executive and technical staff of Harbison-Walker Refractories Company. The dolomite of the Niagara formation that is exposed or near the surface of a wide area in northwestern Ohio1 constitutes a vast supply of almost pure dolomite. It offers a virtually unlimited supply of cheap raw material of uniform dependable analysis for the manufacture of magnesia. A typical analysis of dolomite from the vicinity of Luckey, Ohio, follows: [ ] Brines containing magnesium chloride or sea water can be reacted with calcined dolomite to produce magnesia.2,3 In such reactions the MgCl2 of the brine supplies some of the magnesia and the amount of dolomite required is thereby reduced by an equivalent amount, but brines of commercial importance containing magnesium chloride are some distance away from the purest grades of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio. It was decided therefore to concentrate upon the development of a suitable process for separating the lime and magnesia of dolomite, depend¬ing upon the dolomite itself as the sole source of magnesia. This would make it possible to place a plant at the dolomite quarry, thus eliminating the cost of transporting the stone and also rendering the calcined magnesia available at a most convenient production point, considering the cost of delivery throughout the steel industry. The selection of a process depending solely upon the dolomite as a source of magnesia also necessarily entails production of the lime content of the dolomite as a by-product. It was recognized that if such a lime by-product could be produced in a suitable form, a plant location in northwestern Ohio would also be advantageous for marketing the lime. The problem, therefore, was the discovery and development of a low-cost process for separating the magnesia and lime of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio and producing each in a form relatively free from the other, and meeting the respective requirements of established markets. FACED with rising costs, the mining industry is looking to new methods and equipment to supply the relief necessary for profitable operation. Conveyor transportation is rapidly taking a superior position to motor tramming in underground mines because of lower installation, maintenance, and operating costs. Haulage is always a critical problem in underground mining. The ease of operation and flexibility of a haulage system can have an important effect on ultimate mining cost. With the average tenor of ores on the downgrade, larger tonnages are required for the same metal recovery. This selection of a tramming system can be the key to a successful, paying plant. Because this shift is being made at an ever advancing rate, it may become necessary to tailor mining operations to the transportation system, rather than to select a haulage system fitting set mining methods. In choosing a haulage system, the relative costs of the various methods are of the greatest importance. Adapting the mine to one or the other type of tramming is not considered in the cost analysis, and very likely would make little difference, outside of location of drifts and raises. In the cost sheet, the problem presents recommendations for a conveyor installation and a comparison of equipment, installation, operation, maintenance, and power costs are made. The internal surfaces of rocks which are in contact with interstitial fluids are known to influence in some degree the recovery of hydrocarbons from pay zones. Despite the admitted importance of the influence of solid surfaces on hydrocarbon recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks. In this paper a description is given of the apparatus and procedure employed in the determination of the surface areas of sedimentary rocks, and values are reported for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, consideration is given to the Kozeny equation, which relates surface area to porosity and permeability. A colliparison is made between the surface areas as calculated from this equation and the geometrical areas of a series of packs of spherical glass beads. Also, for a group of sandstone cores. Kozeny areas are compared with surface areas as determined by the gas adsorption method employed in this investigation. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that many processes which are of importance to hydrocarbon production are controlled in some degree by the extent of the surface of the reservoir rock through which the hydrocarbons move. For example, the recovery efficiency that is obtained in a given reservoir is certainly determined in part by the action of interfacial forces between the reservoir fluids and rock, and this action is influenced in turn by the extent of solid surface. Despite the admitted importance of surface effects to problems of petroleum recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks." It is the purpose of this paper to describe an apparatus which has been employed for the measurement of the surface areas of rock samples and to present the values which have been obtained for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, the relationship of surface area to permeability and porosity, as given by the Kozeny equation, will be discussed. METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE AREA The method of determining surface areas as employed in this work has previously found wide use in studies of porous solids such as catalysts. The method involves the measurement of the amount of physical adsorption of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, on the bare surface of the solid at reduced pressure and constant temperature near the normal liquefaction temperature of the gas. With the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption as developed by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller,' it is possible to ascertain the amount of gas (and hence the number of molecules) which is required to cover the solid surface with a single layer of molecules. From a knowledge of the covering area per molecule the total surface ares of the solid can be computed. Since the Brunauer. Emmett, Teller (BET) theory has been adequately discussed elsewhere: it will suffice here merely to present their final equation as ordinarily employed for surface-area calculations. This equation relates the volume of gas, V, which is adsorbed at pressure, P, to the liquefaction pressure, Po, of the gas, and to the volume of gas, V.,, that is required to form a monomolecular layer: In this equation C is a quantity which is related to the heats of adsorption and liquefaction of the gas; for a particular solid-gas system at Constant temperature, C is considered to have a constant value. Two particles in mutual contact form a system which is not in thermo-dynamical equilibrium, because its total surface free energy is not a minimum. If such a system is left for a certain period of time, the bonding of the two particles will take place in order to decrease the total surface area, even though the temperature is lower than the melting point. This phenomenon of bonding of two or more particles with the application of heat only and at temperatures below melting point of any component of the system will be called sintering, although the powder metallurgists use this term in a broader sense, including the presence of molten phase and pressure. It is the objective of this paper to study this process and the mechanisms involved in it. This problem is of utmost importance to powder metallurgy and powder ceramics, and its technological aspects have been studied for a good many years. However, the powder metallurgical operations are too complex and include too many superimposing mechanisms, and too many variables for a direct study. It was therefore advisable for the purposes of this study to reduce the variables to a minimum. In this work the radius of the interface formed during bonding in a simple system composed of a spherical particle and a large block of the same metal was studied as a function of time and temperature. It is believed that the mechanism involved in this simple process is fundamental to any sintering operations. Previous Work J. Frenkell was the first to make a serious attempt to develop a theory of sintering. He assumed that the process consists of a slow deformation of crystalline particles under the influence of surface tension which reduces to a viscous flow where the coefficient of viscosity n is related to the self-diffusion coefficient D by the following equation 1 _ D D6kT [1] where 6 is interatomic distance, k the Boltzman constant, and T the absolute temperature. This type of viscous flow of a crystalline substance is essentially different from the ordinary plastic flow. The latter is a specific propcrty of crystals and cannot take place in amorphous bodies. According to Frenkel this viscous type of flow is due to the diffusion of the holes or vacancies arising in the lattice. He was able to derive an equation relating the growth of the interface between two spherical crystalline particles or between a particle and a semi-infinite crystal (Fig 1) to time t at constant temperature. This relationship can be written as follows: x²— 3/2 a/nt [2] where x is the radius of the interface assumed to be circular, a the original radius of the sphere and a surface tension of the material. The other assump- x tions are that x is less than 0.3 and that during the period 1 the original radius, a, of the metallic particle did not change appreciably. A. J. Shaler and J. Wulff2 followed closely the ideas of Frenkel in their theory of sintering of a mass of metallic powder. The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). Members of the Institute have already received a special pamphlet descriptive of the United Engineering Society building, and wilt doubtless be interested in the progress that has been made up to date-February 24th-in erecting this home for the engineering profession. The old buildings on lots Nos. 25 to 33 W. 39th St., New York, were,' removed many months ago, but final contracts for the new, building were not let until the summer of 1905. The size of the building is 115 ft. on 39th Street, and 88 ft. in, depth; the height from, the sidewalk to the top of the parapet is 220 feet. The cubic contents of the building from the. bottom of the basement floor, to the top of the roof, including the pent houses, is 2,290,000 cubic feet. The number of light's, in the building will be between 4,000 and 4,500. The air supply for Auditorium and Lecture. Halls will amount to nearly 10.0,000 cu. ft, per minute, and the exhaust. to 90,000 cu. ft. per minute. In excavating for cellar and foundations, the average depth where good rock was. found was 37 ft.-it varied, however,: from 27 to 65 ft., due to an old water-course having run through the center of the lot; this condition, and the presence of soft rock, which rapidly disintegrated when exposed to air and water, made the foundation-work very difficult. As two of the column-footings of the building have to sustain a weight of 3,000,000 11) each, the most substantial foundations are necessary; 13,000 cu. yd. of earth were excavated for the foundation and basement; and 1,600 cu. yd. of concrete were necessary, to build up the footings. In the completed building there will be about 3,500,000 bricks. Owing to the number of auditoriums, and their location, and the placing of the library on the top floor; where allowance will have to be made for the enormous weight of 300,000 books, the structural steel work has been unusually complicated in this building. In connection with certain cooperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers' privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.)! an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent, elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was twofold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The grcatcr part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. As a result much information as to their nature and their effects upon the steel and something in regard to some of the conditions that favor their development has been obtained. The practical execution of the design for rolling-mills presented by the writer at the Paris meeting* of thc Iron and Steel Institute in 1900 involves the determination of some questions not yet discussed, among which is the determinatioir of the amount of power required to perform the rolling of pieces of iron and steel of given dimensions. It is necessary to know this factor if we would put motors of proper capacity to the respective pairs of rolls, or, rcciprocally, if, having standard motors at our disposal, we would design grooves to suit them. Moreover, this factor is involved in giving right dimensions to every part of the rolls and housings. Expert designers of engines for driving rolling-mills of the present type receive very indefinite directions, such as: that the motor is to drive a light, medium or heavy train; that it must work with fly-wheel or reversing gear; that the number of revolutions per minute should not exceed 40 or 60, and that at a given speed the power developed should be from 100 to 200 H. P., or from 1,000 to 2,500 13. P. It frequently happens, however, that an cngine of 200 H. P. is forced under the circumstances to press or develop as much as 300 H. P., while, on the other hand, the ,1,500-11. P. engine may be rolling-stock which could be worked with a maximum expenditure of 60 to 80 H. P. Of course such variatior~s as these do not permit the best adjustment of parts or the best economy of power and fuel. The design of roll-trains is even more vaguely limited. Every part of a train, from the point where it connects with the engine to the last groove in the rolls, bears evidence that there are no rules for calculating even approximately the dimensions of the main-shafts, couplings, pinions, gears, rolls, trunnions,

INTRODUCTORY THE analyses which have been made by the writer according to the method described below were made as part of Professor Withey's investigation of the concrete aggregates' of Wisconsin, in the hope of throwing light on the extent and nature of the influence of the mineralogical constitution of aggregates upon the properties of the concrete, and mortar made from them. This method was found most satisfactory after four weeks of experiment and modification. It attains an accuracy quite sufficient for the purpose of the analysis, and is fairly rapid. Mineralogical analyses may be thus made at a cost considerably less than that of chemical analyses of a similar degree of completeness. The results obtained by this method should not vary in any item by more than 1 per cent. of the total weight of the sample, and may be made very much better than this by the exercise of greater care in the microscopic counting (see below). The accuracy of the hand sorting 'is of course dependent upon the experience and carefulness of the analyst. . After a month's practice, the writer was enabled to turn out these analyses at the rate of four in 33 hr. of working time. It was found most economical to handle four samples at once. The samples analyzed weighed froth 290 to 340 g. each. The same method could be applied to larger or to smaller samples, within reason able limits. The following list covers the necessary apparatus and equipment: 1 good balance capable of weighing accurately to tenths (or, better, hundredths) of a gram, and of handling quantities up to 200 g. in weight. 1 Westphal balance, registering densities to two or three decimal places. 1 Meker or Bunsen burner, and gas supply. 1 nest of sieves, 10, 20, 40, and 100 meshes to the inch.

TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost,1 are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger2 was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil3 have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo- physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electro- chemical circles since 1910.4

The need for instruments to measure the movement of fluids and gas in wells has been recognized by engineers for many years. Information regarding flow in the producing interval has a direct bearing on completion practices in new wells and also provides information on the production characteristics of the well. Many hours of engineering time are spent in planning and completing wells but knowledge as to whether or not the original planning has produced the desired results has not always been complete. Many questions such as the following often arise: Why is it that two wells are completed under supposedly identical conditions, yet one well is a good one and the other is a poor one? Are the sands that look the best on the electric log contributing to the production? These and many other conditions in the producing well need to be under- stood in order to develop more efficient production practices and to improve on methods of completing new wells. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe one type of instrument, outline the methods of running the equipment and show the results of surveys made under various conditions. With an understanding of the use of this type of survey its importance can be evaluated in relation to the problems encountered by the operator. DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The instrument is a velocity recorder employing a clock-controlled 16mm film for recording the rpm of an extremely sensitive rotor which is rotated by the flow of fluids or gas in a well. The helical-vaned rotor and shaft, weighing one-half of one ounce are an integral unit exposed to the well fluids and are the only moving parts not enclosed in the fluid-tight housing. No packing or fluid seal of these parts is necessary and the shaft is mounted top and bottom on special jeweled bearings. Fig. A is the lower part of the instrument showing rotor and shaft with the protecting housing sleeve removed. The rpm of the rotor is recorded on the moving film by a combination electrical and optical system. The record is a series of dashes on the film, each dash and space representing twenty (20) revolutions of the rotor. As the movement of the film is controlled by the clock the number of dashes and spaces in one minute of film travel represents the rpm of the rotor. INTRODUCTION EVER since a genetic connection between many ore deposits and magmas began to be widely recognized, some two-score years ago, there has been much discussion of the complex and intricate problem of the genetic association of specific kinds of mineralization with specific kinds of igneous rocks. General discussions of the latter problem and pertinent data have been given by S. F. Emmons, Kemp, Lindgren, Niggli, Rastall, Spurr, Vogt, and others. In this paper no attempt is made to deal with mineral deposits genetically associated with volcanic rocks, but only with those presumed to be related to exposed intrusive masses. The writer is indebted to E. S. Bastin, F. F. The unidirectional freezing of a semiinfinite liquid from one end has been treated by calculating the solute and temperature distributions in the liquid and solid phases with time, when the solid-liquid interface advances at a rate proportional to (time)lt2. The nucleation probability for new grain formation is calculated as a function of the constitutional and thermal properties of the alloy, the pouring conditions and the catalytic efficiency of the nucleating agents. The transition from columnar crystal formation to equiaxed crystal formation is assumed to occur at a critical nucleation frequency for a particular alloy and the quantitative dependence of the ratio (columnar zone length/equiaxed zone length) upon the freezing conditions has been predicted. The effects of (i) fluid flow in the liquid, (ii) heat transfer through a mold wall, and (iii) a finite ingot length, have been explicitly tveated as departures from ideality. These departures from ideality are found to have very important consequences on the ingot stmcture. In Part I&apos; of this series, a qualitative description of the general ingot structure was developed. The factors that determine i) the ratio of the equiaxed zone length to columnar zone length and ii) the grain sizes in these zones, were discussed. In the present paper, topic (i) will be treated quantitatively, and it is intended that topic (ii) will be treated quantitatively in Part 111. The complete treatment has been split in this manner for ease of development and coherency of presentation. The treatments are quite mathematical in nature and, although some of the conclusions to Part 11 depend upon the treatment presented in Part 111, it was felt that the intended audience would find the material more readable and more useful in its present form. To this same end, it seems worthwhile to reiterate some of the qualitative aspects of grain nucleation during ingot solidification before embarking on the mathematical description. QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS In the conventional method of casting, a liquid alloy with a certain degree of superheat is poured into a mold. The outer rim of liquid metal cools rapidly to the liquidus temperature of the alloy and begins to undercool. As the degree of undercooling increases, nuclei of solid begin to form in this chill layer, this nucleation being catalyzed by certain heterogeneous particles in the liquid. The grains in the chill layer which are generally of random orientation, begin to grow inwards because of heat conduction through the mold. The grains usually develop a columnar shape since the frequency of nucleation of new grains in the liquid ahead of the advancing interface is generally insufficient to seriously impede the growth of the original grains. Due to the slow diffusion rate of solute in the liquid, a solute distribution is formed in the liquid adjacent to the interface which is either an excess or a depletion if the partition coefficient, ko, of the solute is < 1 or > 1, respectively. Thus, the liquidus temperature of the liquid adjacent to the interface is a function of position. The actual temperature in the liquid is also a function of position and the temperature gradient at the interface decreases as the interface moves away from the mold wall. Since the rate of advance of the interface decreases with time, the equilibrium temperature distributions and the actual temperature distributions as a function of interface position, X, can be illustrated as in Fig. 1. Thus, a region of liquid may exist in which the actual temperature is below the liquidus temperature. This liquid is contitutionally supercooled and therefore unstable with respect to the nucleation of new grains. Now, since the supercooling in Fig. 1 increases as the interface moves further away from the mold wall, the nucleation rate of new grains will increase. When the nuclea-

Prospecting is certainly the world&apos;s biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself- only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions.
