THE purpose of this investigation has been to study one method for making ordinary carbon steel by the powder metallurgy technique. This method con- [ ] sists of pressing and subsequently sintering an intimate mixture of iron powder and graphite in a suitable atmosphere to produce a steel. Two types of iron powder have been studied, electrolytic and reduced. The sintering of mixtures of loose carbonyl iron and carbon black for several hours at 1000° to 1100°C. (1830° to 2010°F.), followed by forging of the resultant ingots to bars, has been studied by Offermann.1 Trail' has reported on the properties of hydrogen-reduced and electrolytic iron powders, both containing 0.5 per cent carbon. Methods for making steel bodies by powder metallurgy have also been sug- [ ] gested by Goetzel,3 who recommends the addition of steel powder of well-defined carbon content to pure iron powder, and Volterra,4 who suggests compaction and subsequent sintering of a mixture of steel powder, iron oxide and iron powder. Fox the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of -Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method was employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence, had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously- pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice's report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining. No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the 'conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice's report will be avoided.

Petroleum operations in Bolivia are still limited to those of the subsidiaries of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. Development work is being carried on at Sanandita and at Bermejo and testing operations in the north. Five wells have been completed at Sanandita. Wells 1 and 2 are producers, 3 and 5, which are north of 1 and 2, are poor wells, and well 4, to the south, was dry. In the Bermejo field, well 5 has just been completed. No information as to the production is obtainable. In the north one string was operated at each of the following locations: Machareti, Camatindi and Camiri. The well completed at Machareti during the year was a failure. The result of the others is not known. It is reported on good authority that a pipe line will be completed in 1931 to connect the Sanandita field with the Lomitas field in the Argentine. This will place Bolivia among the ranks of the producing countries of South America for the first time. This development indicates that some arrangement has been arrived at with the Argentine Government for the importation of Bolivian oil. During 1930 the Bolivian Government declared in effect the new Petroleum Law which had been expected for such a long time. One of the first acts of the military junta, which rose to power through a coup d'état, was to cancel this law, so that Bolivian oil operations are still under the old law of 1921. One new local company was formed to exploit 1,500,000 hectares near the town of Cochabamba. The Bolivia Concessions, Ltd., which had a concession permitting the selection of 17,000,000 acres in eastern Bolivia, is reported to have failed in 1930 and is now being liquidated. Chile During 1930 the Chilean Government entered into a contract with an individual to explore in five distinct zones of the Republic. We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. In past years the exploration of the oil possibilities of Colombia has been confined to parts of three distinct physiographic provinces; namely, the coastal plains area near the Caribbean Sea, the Magdalena Valley and the upper reaches of the Maracaibo Basin near the Venezuelan border. During 1935, little exploratory work and no drilling was carried on on the coast, but there was considerable activity in the other two areas. In the Magdalena Valley, the Tropical Oil Co. continued its producing and development operations on the De Mares Concession. The Socony-Vacuum exercised the option it acquired in 1934 on Sr. Luciano Restrepo's concession adjacent to the Tropical property and north of the Sogamoso River. No wells have been started on the Socony's lands although, according to the terms of the lease, drilling must be started within the next two years. West of the Carare River and adjacent to the Tropical's southwestern boundary, the Sociedad Nacional del Carare denounced the lands formerly held by the Union Colombiana, whose lease automatically lapsed during the year owing to the company's failure to comply with its drilling obligations. In the same area, the concessions held by Callejas et al. and the Société Européene des Pétroles are also understood to have lapsed for the same reason. Holdings of other interests in the Magdalena Valley were inactive during the year. Near the upper part of the Maracaibo Basin, the Gulf, through its subsidiary the Colombian Petroleum Co., continued active exploration and development on its Barco concession. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The following information and that presented in the accompanying tables relating to the activities of the Colombian Petroleum Co. was supplied through the courtesy of Mr. E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of that company. Four wells were completed during the year on the north Petrolea dome, where an attempt is being made to define the limits of the field. On the south end of the Petrolea anticline, one well, Petrolea No. 3, which might be classed as a wildcat, encountered a heavy flow of salt water immediately below the oil zone and had to be abandoned. In Alberta, an oil well with an estimated capacity of 60 to 100 bbl. was "brought in" at Wainwright, the oil being derived from the Colorado group of rocks. In the Norman fields, Mackenzie River area, two new holes completed showed no oil in commercial quantities whereas the "Discovery" well has now an increased flow amounting to about 100 bbl. In Kent Co., Ontario, a well from low down in the Trenton formation gave an initial flow estimated at 200 bbl. This opens up new possibilities for the Ontario fields as this is the first oil from this depth in the Trenton. ACTIVE drilling operations for oil were carried on during the summer of 1923 in various parts of western Canada, particularly in Alberta. During the early part of the summer, interest centered in southern Alberta, in the Coutts area, just north of the producing Kevin-Sunburst field of Montana; but on Nov. 14 a strike of oil by British Petroleums Ltd. at its well near Wainwright, 120 mi. east of Edmonton, diverted public attention to a new field. According to present estimates, this well has a possible production of from 60 to 100 bbl. a day; the oil is 15° Bé. with an asphaltic base and is obtained from a sand at the depth of 2019-2036 ft. The oil stands at 1700 ft. in the casing and there is sufficient gas pressure to cause it to flow when the well is opened. The oil horizon is in a sandstone in rocks of Colorado age. It is known that there is a terrace structure of which the western edge extends in a northwesterly direction from the vicinity of Hardisty to Viking, where it probably swings more to the north. At Viking a small dome-like structure on this terrace gives rise to an important gas field. Wainwright lies directly northeast of Hardisty. The exact structure in the Wainwright field is unknown. At Fabyan, 6 mi. northwest of Wainwright, the Imperial Oil Co.1 last year brought in a large gas well estimated at 14,000,000 cu. ft.; the escaping gas sprayed a small amount of heavy black oil over the derrick. In another paper I have described in general the close association of zinc-blende and iron pyrites in the ore-deposits of southwest Wis consin. These two minerals generally occur together at the same horizon, a sheet of one being overlain by a sheet of the other; and also the pyrites is disseminated through the blende to such a degree that the latter is rendered comparatively worthless for the produc tion of spelter. Ordinarily the pyrites, which is mostly the trimetric marcasite variety, occurs in about equal quantity with the blende and is separated by hand-culliug and chipping; but there are large de posits where the ores are so closely mixed that they can neither be separated by culling nor by any mechanical method. The specific gravity of the two minerals is so nearly the same that attempts often made to effect even a partial separation by jigging have proved un. successful. The smelters of zinc-ores in the Mississippi valley will not take ores which carry more than 7 per cent. of iron; and it is therefore necessary to cull the massive ('jack" with great care and at consid erable expense, in order to bring it up to the market-standard of purity. The results of trials to effect a separation of blende and pyrites in other regions have been equally unsatisfactory. The literature of this branch of metallurgy abounds in examples. In Wisconsin efforts have been made in the past to " burn " the mixed ores in heaps, in order to soften or destroy the pyrites, and facilitate its separation from the massive blende. The same method has also been resorted to when galenite is mixed through the substance of the blende, for the purpose of disintegrating the ore, so that it could be separated by jigging. The custom was to pile the ore and the fuel together. As might have been expected, the results were far from satisfactory. AS predicted by Messrs. Fuqua and Thompson, in last year's paper on West Texas1, 1935 saw a marked increase in activity in this area over recent years. Both major and independent operators shared in the increased wildcatting operations, which resulted in the discovery of eight and probably nine new fields in this area. During 1935 there were 700 wells completed as compared with 468 in 1934 and only 236 in 1933. Of these completions 579 were producers with a total 24-hr. potential of over 700,000 bbl. It is estimated that the new fields discovered during 1935 added from 200,000,000 to 400,000,000 bbl. to the known oil reserve in West Texas. In addition to these new fields, many of the older producing areas scored marked extensions during the year. New Fields Goldsmith.—-The Goldsmith field, in west central Ector County, gives promise of being the year's outstanding discovery in this area. The discovery well was completed by the Gulf Production Co. in June at a depth of 4177 ft.; it gaged 275 bbl. of 36° gravity oil in 3 hr. through 85/8-in. casing on its first production test. The field has been extended to the east by wells drilled by Phillips and Pure on their Cowden block. Present indications are that the field may contain 10,000 productive acres, and this, together with the large flush production from only a small penetration into the pay, leads to the belief that Gulf-Goldsmith No. 1 was the outstanding Permian lime discovery of 1935. It is quite probable that production will prove to be continuous to the Landreth-Scarborough No. 1, 33/4 miles to the northwest, which was completed for a small producer late in 1934. Sand Hills (Ordovician).—From the standpoint of creating excitement, the outstanding West Texas test of the year was no doubt Gulf-Waddell No. 1, on the northwest nose of the Sand Hills structure. This test was started late in 1934 as a deep test to the Ordovician. Thc Ordovician was topped above 6000 ft,., considerably higher than expected. The authors presented an article2† last year on colloidal properties of clay suspensions in which they attempted to sustain the position that the behavior of clay suspensions is due primarily to the mechanical interference of the platy particles, the nature and extent of the interference being profoundly influenced by the character of the surfaces of the particles, which in turn is determined primarily by the nature and amount of adsorbed foreign materials held on the surface of the particles by forces which are predominantly chemical in type. The following discussion is a continuation of that article to extend these same interpretative points of view to the behavior of clay gels. Insight into the mechanism of gelation is certainly of outstanding importance in the handling of drilling muds. In the former article it was suggested that the thin, flat plates that constitute the ultimate clay particles may build up aggregates by the overlapping of the ultimate plates face to face much longer and perhaps also much wider than the ultimate plates themselves, but not appreciably thicker. Exhaustive microscopic examinations of characteristic clays show no tendency for the larger particles, clearly visible under the microscope, to orient themselves in this way. It is true that the gelation of the clays is due primarily to the smallest particles, unresolvable other than by the ultramicroscope, so that the possibility of the deve1opment by them of an overlapping structure is not excluded. Furthermore, as one approaches the limit of resolving power of the microscope, the difficulty of observing accurately the shapes and relative positions of particles incresses excessively. However, in the absence of any observable tendency toward overlapping orientation of the large, visible particles, one hesitates to ascribe such a tendency to the smaller particles beyond the range of visibility. Should it develop that one must exclude the assumption of overlapping orientation, the explanations offered in the previous article are changed in only one respect; namely, one would now have to assume that the ultimate particles themselves have length, and probably also width, very large in comparison with their thickness.

A common method of classifying non-water- impounding mine waste structures is necessary to facilitate professional comnunications within the industry and between representatives of industry and government. Camnon classifications can a1 so he1 p quickly create and maintain a mental picture of the structures being discussed. Three categories for classification presented in this paper include: (1) configuration and location with respect to existing topography. (2) material characteristics of waste, and (3) environmental sensitivity or characteristic; of the disposal area. Configuration and location classification involve terminologies typically utilized for waste dumps over the past several years. General classification categories for non-impounding structures include: (a) valley-fill, (b) cross-valley, (c) side-hill, (d) ridge, and (e) heaped. Material characteristics can govern the location, engineering details, and environmental sensitivity of the waste structure. Material classification includes: (a) hazardous, (b) non-hazardous, (c) inert, (d) fugitive dust susceptible and (e) leachate susceptible. A1 though many characteristics are potentially applicable, this paper will focus on the categories mentioned above. Environmental sensitivity of a waste structure encompasses many objective and subjective evaluations plus many multi-disciplinary considerations. Environmental sensitivity incorporates numerous factors in addition to those highlighted in configuration and location, and material characteristic classifications. A few examples of how this categorization can govern the engineering design and location of waste dumps are provided in this paper. In addition to the verbal descriptions of classifications, a simplified version of the combined classifications with an alphanumeric format and its methodology is discussed in this paper. Surface water controls often govern the classification or vice versa. In order to maintain a non- impounding status, water must be prevented from collecting behind the structures. Depending on material characteristics, water inflow to or over the site can cause significant environmental or human consequences. Finally, the access of water to the waste dumps can play a large role in the degree of environmental sensitivity to the site. This paper provides a framework in which to discuss the other aspects of this conference and also provides insights as to how the framework is based on actual practice.

The authors presented an article2† last year on colloidal properties of clay suspensions in which they attempted to sustain the position that the behavior of clay suspensions is due primarily to the mechanical interference of the platy particles, the nature and extent of the interference being profoundly influenced by the character of the surfaces of the particles, which in turn is determined primarily by the nature and amount of adsorbed foreign materials held on the surface of the particles by forces which are predominantly chemical in type. The following discussion is a continuation of that article to extend these same interpretative points of view to the behavior of clay gels. Insight into the mechanism of gelation is certainly of outstanding importance in the handling of drilling muds. In the former article it was suggested that the thin, flat plates that constitute the ultimate clay particles may build up aggregates by the overlapping of the ultimate plates face to face much longer and perhaps also much wider than the ultimate plates themselves, but not appreciably thicker. Exhaustive microscopic examinations of characteristic clays show no tendency for the larger particles, clearly visible under the microscope, to orient themselves in this way. It is true that the gelation of the clays is due primarily to the smallest particles, unresolvable other than by the ultramicroscope, so that the possibility of the deve1opment by them of an overlapping structure is not excluded. Furthermore, as one approaches the limit of resolving power of the microscope, the difficulty of observing accurately the shapes and relative positions of particles incresses excessively. However, in the absence of any observable tendency toward overlapping orientation of the large, visible particles, one hesitates to ascribe such a tendency to the smaller particles beyond the range of visibility. Should it develop that one must exclude the assumption of overlapping orientation, the explanations offered in the previous article are changed in only one respect; namely, one would now have to assume that the ultimate particles themselves have length, and probably also width, very large in comparison with their thickness.

The vecrystallization texture. formed by selective growth of random nuclei in an 80 pct volled 99.997 pct A1 crystal of initial orientation mear (123) (41.21 was found to consist of components related to the single-component rolling texture by 40 deg. rota-tiows around [111]axes. The relative-volume fractiovz of the various recrystallization-texture componezts may be accouzted for 012 the basis of the Lou) mobility of twist boundaries, if it is assumed that the mobility of the tilt boundaries also varies with their orientation. Similar results with a, aluminum-alloy cystal of the (110) [112] orientation, containing iron, silicon, and zinc, show that these solute contents do not impair the effectivezess of the oriented growth mechanism of re cry s-tallization- texture formation. In a previous investigation1,2 it was found that a sharp recrystallization texture is formed as a result of the oriented growth of random artificial nuclei in an aluminum crystal rolled to 80 pct RA, on the (110) plane in the [ 112] direction. Four recrystallization-texture components were found to occur, with orientations corresponding to 40-deg rotations around [111 1 axes of the deformation texture. Reorientations of this type were already found in earlier work,3,4 where the presence of random nuclei could be reasonably assumed, but was not rigorously documented. The same orientation relationship was found also by Lucke and Liebmann, who actually measured the orientation dependence of boundary-migration rates in the recrystallization of A1 crystals slightly deformed in tension.5,6 The occurrence in the recrystallization texture of only four of the eight crystallographically equivalent orientations of the type referred to above remained unexplained,1,2 although it was clearly not a result of the absence of suitable nuclei. Recently Burgers7 suggested that this effect may be due to the aniso-tropy of boundary mobility observed2'6; it was found that the recrystallized grains of the 40-deg [111]-rotated type grow much faster in directions perpendicular to the [ 111] they have in common with the matrix than parallel to this direction, i.e., the tilt boundaries have much higher mobility than the twist boundaries. In most reactions involving solids the transformation kinetics may be represented by the combination of two processes —those of nucleation and of growth. For example, Mehl and his coiq-orker in their studies on the transformation of austenite to pearlite in steels have been able to describe the kinetics in terms of the rates of nucleation and of growth. By micrographic examination of their specimens they determined the nucleation rate (rate of appearance of pearlite colonies) as a function of time, of percent transformation, and of temperature. They observed that after an incubation period in which no nuclei are observed, the number of nuclei appearing per unit time per unit of untransformed grain boundary area, increases at an increasng rate with time. When recrystallization rates have been interpreted in terms of rates of nucleation and growth and the rate of nucleation determined, an incubation period followed by an increasing rate of nucleation has also been reported. Among the studies in which this phenomenon has been observed are those of Kornfeld and coworkers3 on cold-drawn aluminum wire, of Anderson and Mehl4 n the recrystallization of aluminum sheet, and of Stanlcy and Meh15 on the recrystallization of silicon ferrite sheet. The existence of an incubation period during which no nuclei are observed does not appear to have been reconciled with the generally accepted Volmer-Becker theory of nucleation in condensed systems. This theory ostensibly requires the rate of appearance of nuclei to be independent of time. Volmer-Becker Theory In order to form a stable nuclcus of a new phase B in a mother phase A, the molecules or atoms of the mother phase must surmount a free energy barrier whose height is determined by the volume free energy change accompanying the transformation and the energy of the surface separating the two phases. The free energy difference between nuclei of various sizes and the molecules or atoms of the mother phase is plotted schematically in Fig I as a function of the radius of the nucleus r. This free energy difference is plotted for two values of the change of free energy per atom, (Jb — ja) accompanying the transformation when the volumes of the two phases are infinite. One of these values of (Jb—Ja) corresponds to a temperature above the temperature To at which the phascs A and B are in equilibrium, and the other to a temperature below To. The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystabs upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single-crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of 20 wt pct. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appear to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. In actual practice the growth of single crystals of metals from the melt is a tedious, painstaking process.&apos; Care must be taken to insure the proper thermal gradients and rate of growth in a vibration-free environment. Excellent single crystals can be grown when these variables are controlled. When a second insoluble and finely divided phase is present in the melt the growth of single crystals is difficult, if not impossible, even under the most favorable conditions outlined above. During the past few years, a composite of silver and alumina has demonstrated an ability to resist flow even though the major phase, silver, is mo1ten. 2 A more surprising feature of this material is the ease with which single crystals of silver grow upon cooling the composite from temperatures above the melting point of silver to temperatures near room temperature. Observations have been made that demonstrate that single crystals of silver will grow even when conditions most unfavorable for growth of pure silver crystals exist. The crystals grown in this manner are imperfect in that a great deal of subgrain structure exists. It is the purpose of this manuscript to qualitatively describe this process and to attempt to isolate the influencing factors of this behavior. MATERIAL PREPARATION The composite material is prepared by powder-metallurgical techniques. Two items of great importance are the introduction of oxygen into the system and the obvious need for a thorough mixing of the metallic and refractory oxide phases. The oxygen is necessary in order that the silver wets the alumina. Without oxygen the phases separate and the material shows no unusual properties. In order to supply the needed oxygen the silver is added in the form of silver oxide which is readily decomposed to oxygen and silver upon heating. The silver oxide is readily obtained in a finely divided form that allows a uniform mixture of the alumina and silver oxide to be prepared. The correct ratio of alumina to silver oxide is mixed in the presence of alcohol in an ordinary food blender. The mixture has the consistency of a thin slurry and after mixing for approximately 20 min is dried and pressed into billets at various pressures.
