IT is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. JESSE SCOBEY The Foreign War Relief Committee closed its dispensary fund during the past month with a contribution to the American Fund for French Wounded of $1720.51, balance on hand, principal and interest, as a gift from the New York Section of the Woman's Auxiliary for pressing emergency dispensary work in France. The American Fund for French Wounded was authorized to cable this sun at once, in consideration of the fact that their existing dispensaries, including the one established by the New York Section at Briey, were in excellent condition, while their mobile dispensary fund was confronted by the most urgent need for work among the refugees now returning in pitiable condition and in great numbers to certain distressing centers. The committee sewing at Fund headquarters every week has had seven working days, with an enrollment of twenty: The average attendance was ten; largest attendance for any one day, thirteen; smallest attendance, eight. Interest in this activity is growing steadily and it is the intention of the committee to push the work vigorously for the next few weeks.

Stanley C. Bullock, Captain, Royal Engineers, has been awarded the Military Cross. Charles L. Cantley was commissioned Lieutenant in the Fifth Royal Highlanders of Canada and went to France with the first Canadian contingent early in 1915, being Quartermaster of the Battalion. He went through the second battle of Ypres, Festubert, St. Eloi and the other engagements in which the Canadians were engaged up .to July, 1915, at which time he was promoted to the rank of Major. He was later ordered home by General Sir Sam Hughes, then Canadian Minister of War, and his services were loaned to the Nova Scotia Steel & Coal Co., suppliers of shell steel and forgers of shells in Canada. He continued with this company as chief officer in charge of munitions until the latter part of 1917, when he sailed for England with his old regiment. John D. Cooner was wounded on Apr. 9, 1918, by shrapnel, and is now in a hospital in Paris. He is getting along nicely. T. C. Gorman was killed in action in France on Mar. 18, 1918.

G. = 9'0 to 9'7 of crystals; of massive altered forms from 6'4 upwards. Luster submetallic, to greasy or pitch-like, and dull. Color grayish, greenish, brownish, velvet- black. Streak brownish black, grayish, olive-green, a little shining. Opaque. Comp. -A uranate of uranyl, lead, usually thorium (or zirconium), often the metals of the lanthanum and yttrium groups; also containing the gases nitrogen, helium and argon, in varying amounts up to 2'6 p. c. Calcium and water (essential?) are present in small quantities; iron also, but only as an impurity. The relation between the bases varies widely and no definite for- mula can be given. Radium was first discovered in this mineral and it has been shown that it and the helium present are products of the breaking down of the uranium.

The smoker, Monday evening, was an unusual success. It was held in the beautiful gold room of the Congress hotel, which was very elabo-rately decorated with American flags. More than 500 were present. The gallery was filled with ladies, who responded to the request of the song leader and helped in many ways to grace the occasion. The enter-tainment, was a varied one and was original with the Chicago Committee, which deserves great credit for the unusual success of the event. Al-though it was mostly funmaking, Dr. F. B. Cottrell and George S. Rice of the Bureau of Mines gave some very interesting talks, illustrated by flags and moving pictures, of their trip through Europe since the armis-tice. Mr. Rice's talk dealt particularly with the demonstrative coal and iron regions and Doctor Cottrell's was devoted almost solely to that part of his trip in Northern Italy where he was investigating the application of volcanic steam to power purposes. This steam is derived from boracic-acid springs and helium is secured as a byproduct.

The brightest spot in the mineral economy of the Philippines is the rapid development of reserves and production of copper. If economic conditions remain favorable and the political climate is encouraging, production of this metal should increase at a rate of 25% per year for several years, long enough to rank this country as one of the major copper producers of the world. In 1965 the copper content of the Philippine concentrates was approximately 60,000 tons. It should total about 80,000 tons in 1966. A major part of the increase will come from the rich Lepanto mine located in Mountain Province, North Central Luzon. Daily production of ore increased from 1200 to 2000 tons at the end of 1965. The ore, consisting of enargite and luzonite, averages nearly 3% copper and 0.12 oz. of gold per ton. It is an under- ground operation with a cutoff grade of 2%. The ore is associated with extensive silicification under a volcanic cap rock. Further expansion to increase ore production to 2600 tpd is under way.

FRENCH steel makers are ready to support the Schuman plan. Pierre Ricard, vice-president of the French Steel Chamber syndicate, announced the industry's readiness to cooperate with the plan, which is aimed toward giving Europe an integrated steel industry. Steel men appear to have decided in favor of the plan because of its promise to unify the continent. Behind approval is the emphasis placed by French steel plant operators on continuation of the Franco Saar economic union. The French have an, abiding fear of German steel production potential. France is currently producing at an annual rate of 11 million tons, while Western Germany is producing 15.5 million tons of steel. The Saar output is placed at 3 million tons. French industrialists feel that as long as the marriage of French and Saar steel production continues, France can compete reasonably well with Germany. If Saar production should suddenly become part of the Western Germany total, it could result in an unequal competitive situation, giving Germany a production level of 18.5 million tons of steel annually, or 60 pct more than France.

The compressibility of reservoir rock is a factor which is generally neglected in reservoir engineering calculations. This is due in part to the fact that there is little published information on rock compressibility values for limestones and sandstones. Omission of rock compressibility is undoubtedly justified in calculations for saturated reservoirs; however, in under-saturated reservoirs,* expansion of the rock accompanying decline in the reservoir pressure may be of such magnitude as to affect materially the prediction of reservoir performance. The effect of rock compressibility will be of most importance in: (1) calculation of oil in place by pressure decline data in undersaturated volumetric reservoirs when the limits of the field are unknown or indefinite, and (2) studies of natural water drive performance. To estimate its importance in such cases, a series of laboratory tests were made to obtain usable values for reservoir rock compressibility. Members of the Institute who have visited the works of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company at Scranton, will remember the exposure of a large vein of anthracite coal in the rocky bank on the south side of Roaring Brook, near the blast-furnace. The vein is quite flat, and is exposed to view for several hundred yards along the banks of the brook, a few feet above the surface of the water. It is some ten feet in thickness, and is known as the Big Vein. At a point just opposite the blast-furnace, much of the coal from this vein was mined out many years since, the usual pillars being left to support the overlying rock and drift, which are here some twentyfive to thirty feet in thickness. The primitive mode of mining clay by open workings, in which the overlying beds of earth (commonly termed the " bearing ") were removed, and the clay then dug out by sinking shallow pits, is still the prevalent and almost universal mode of extraction. This is particularly true of our cretaceous and tertiary clays, which are generally earthy in character, and but slightly covered by drift and alluvium. The most accessible beds in many of our clay districts have been worked out, and clay miners are compelled to search for new outcrops, or to remove thicker beds of top dirt or bearing. Under this stimulus subterranean working, or mining proper, has been suggested. A brief notice of this new mode, as employed by Mr. Otto Ernst, near the head of Chesquake's Creek, three miles south of South Amboy, New Jersey, is here presented for your consideration. The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

THE renewed interest in titanium, resulting from its increasing application as a structural material, has stimulated basic deformation studies on this metal. In the course of our work, we have developed a dislocation etchant and applied it to a perfection study of melt-grown single crystals as well as to a preliminary investigation of plastic deformation in titanium. The etchant, Keller&apos;s etch (21 cu cm HF, 64 cu cm HC1, 106 cu cm HNO3, and 160 cu cm H20), reveals the emergence of both grown-in and fresh dislocations on pure titanium and a-phase Ti-Al single crystals. Pits are produced only on surfaces within a few degrees of the basal plane; the more exactly parallel to a basal plane the surface is, the more distinct are the pits. The observed pit density, however, does not appear to depend on the surface orientation; the pits simul- taneously become less distinct as the misorientation from a basal plane increases. Etch times are short, a few seconds, for pure titanium; longer times are necessary for alloy crystals.

The search for metalliferrous deposits in the Labrador-Ungava Trough of Canada dates from 1929 when non-ferrous minerals were the main quest of prospectors in this area. Many gossans, resulting from the oxidation of sulfides, were located and examined but none of these led to any orebodies of commercial value. However, such investigations did much to arouse interest in this area and fostered further mapping and prospecting. Since this early period in the history of prospecting in the Trough, the presence of iron ore deposits and potential iron producing sites has commanded the center of attention of exploration personnel. The iron-bearing rocks of southwestern Labrador have in recent years come into prominence as possible sources of iron ore of the beneficiation type. Exploration and development work has been carried on in concession areas granted by the Newfoundland Government to the Labrador Mining and Exploration Co. Ltd. and to the Newfoundland and Labrador Corp. In the course of evaluating its holdings in the Wabush Lake area (Fig. l), Labrador Mining and Exploration Co. has conducted geological, geophysical and diamond drilling programs.

Prior to 1950 Magma&apos;s ore production came from two parallel, steeply dipping, east-west striking mineralized faults, one called the Main or Magma vein and the other the Koerner vein, which lay about 1100 ft to the south. This vein system has been explored and mined over 9000 ft horizontally and 4800 ft vertically. In 1950 continued exploration led to the discovery and development of replacement orebodies in the Devonian limestone zones adjacent to the veins. These replacement deposits occur in the eastern part of the Magma mine and follow the strike and the 30º east dip of the host limestone. Strike length of the ore bodies varies from 250- 500 ft and thickness from 15-125 ft. The orebodies are large tabular masses with chalcopyrite and bornite being the dominant ore minerals. Hematite and pyrite are the most abundant gangue minerals. Incompetent limestone, shale, or a porphyry sill hanging wall is characteristic of portions of the replacement beds. In many instances the ore is blocky, badly fractured and intermixed with layers of limestone gouge, pyrite and hematite.

Abstract-An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits, and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes programs for fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various hypothetical properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. It is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of Pennsylvanian shales and underclays were studied to determine their suitability for lightweight aggregate and refractory ladle brick. Eighty percent of the variation in bloating of shales and clays was explained by the variation of Si02, A1203, and fluxes (Fe203, MgO, CaO, Na20, and K20); 60% by variation in quartz, kaolinite, illite, and chlorite. The best bloating was exhibited by marine shales, whereas freshwater shales and underclays experienced little or no expansion. Regional paleogeographic maps o f Pottsville and Allegheny shales permit bloating to be geographically predicted. It was found that clays meeting the specifications for refractory ladle bricks were obtained from underclays having over 34.5% mica, over 40% kaolinite and less than 15% quartz. Underclays of this composition are confined to the lower Allegheney outcropping along the near-margins of the coal basin. The best clay is that underlying the Lower Kittanning coal. Porosity of the first fired brick was found to be inversely correlated with reheat expansion.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines-El Paso Mining and Milling Company cooperative research program at the Emerald Isle mine3 near Kingman, Ariz. This research program was directed toward developing in situ leaching methods for 200,000 tons of ore exposed in the pit bottom and also 1,500,000 tons of ore under 200 feet of overburden adjacent to the pit. A test area in the pit bottom containing 15,000 tons of ore was blasted and leached. The results of this leach test were encouraging, and the entire pit bottom was leached in-place for about 7 months. Two test blasts under 200 feet of overburden and extending to 290 feet were detonated in an area near the open pit. The results of these blasts were evaluated by core drilling and permeability measurements. An in situ leaching system was designed, but not implemented, to recover copper from the 1,500,000-ton area near the pit. The company decided to terminate operations at the Emerald Isle mine in November 1975.
