Major parameters relating to the operating of the conventional calcine-charged reverberatory f'ce process such as distribution coefficients of major elements among slag, matte, blister, and gases, temperatures and weights of intermediates, and heat losses of furnaces were measured and determined. (Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) A DEPOSIT of manganese-ore near Tucson, Ariz., merits notice by reason of the peculiar form in which it occurs, and as a striking. example of ore-deposition by vadose upward capillary flow of metal-bearing solutions with concentration at the surface of the country-rock. This deposit occurs at the northern end of the Coyote mountains, about 40 miles west of Tucson, upon the outcropping beds of porphyritic rock, which appear to be partly-metamorphosed strata of volcanic tufa, probably of late Secondary or of Tertiary age. The strata dip northward at a low angle, and present a series of basset-edges in parallel lines of outcrop, east and west, facing the south and extending over many acres. Successive groups of these outcrops, from 5 to 20 ft. in breadth, are coated with oxides of manganese in lustrous black films and crusts, shining in the sunlight like polished ebony, and covering the whole surface of the rock above the soil. Seen at a little distance, these croppings look like solid ledges of massive and pure ore; but closer inspection and a few blows of the hammer reveal their true nature as a superficial coating allied in origin to the blackened shining surface of rocks exposed in desert-regions, familiarly known as " desert paint" or "desert varnish,"' similar to the phenomena described by me in a former paper, but much thicker and heavier. * By reason of the death of the distinguished author, this communication, probably his last communication to technical literature, is published without revision of the proofs by him. (written discussion*).-The method adopted by Mr. Lennox is a very interesting test of the practical application of Mr. Gates' crushing-surface diagram to a greet variety of gold and copper ores. His method of dealing with the material below 200-mesh is also a distinct contribution to the subject, although, as he suggests, it seems likely that some microscopic measurement of this material may be advisable before the mesh reciprocals of its group particles can be dealt with as accurately as can those coarser than 200-mesh. In examining the general results shown in Table 3, it is somewhat puzzling to perceive why Calumet &, Hecla jig tails should show a crushing resistance 3 - times greater than that of the ore from the Ray Consolidated copper mine. While assaying some copper carbonate ore from the Frazer claims, Similakameen, B. C., I noticed that on parting the gold button a deep orange solution was formed. The button gave off pink bands in the nitric acid, which became deep orange at a short distance from it; and as it traveled over the surface of the porcelain dish, it left a deep orange track behind. As the button brightened in the cupel, it appeared to have a bronze color; but I have since found that when amarillium is in large excess of the gold, the button is a very dark gray. The button parted easily. To the orange solution I added a salt (NaCl) solution, shook in a silver testbottle, and filtered. With H2S I obtained a precipitate, which I supposed due to platinum. The existence of local room-temperature plastic flow in germanium, which has been a subject of controversy for nearly two decades, has recently received renewed attention, albeit no more agreement than hitherto. Phenomenologically one major facet of the problem has been reduced to the question whether or not indentation can be effected in germanium without the introduction of cracks. That plastic flow can be induced at room temperature by fracture appears to have been rather convincingly demonstrated recently by Suzuki and Kamada and by Noble and Henisch.1 The literature contains both direct and incidental references to Vickers and Knoop indentations showing no cracks, within resolution of optical microscopy. Recently, however, following a controversy on the subject,2,3 johnson4 made a study of indentations produced by spherical indenters and concluded that these are accompanied by cracking. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) ATTEMPTS were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it. was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No. 1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles.

Another increase in production and the discovery of new pools arc the outstanding developments of the year 1937. Production in 1937 totaled 16,354,706 bbl., compared to 15,457,953 bbl. in the previous year, an increase of 5.8 per cent, of which 5 per cent was due to the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Governnlent Oil Fields) and 0.8 per cent t,o private companies. Table I shows that the most important gain in output was obtained in zone B of Comodoro Rivadavia, partly offset by a 5.7 per cent decrease in the Neuqu6n district. The fields of Salta and Mendoza show an increase of 4.4 and 39.1 per cent, respectively. (written discussion?).-Regarding the statement of Mr. Ordoñez, on page 1007, concerning the synclinal curving of sedimentary beds caused by the extrusion of volcanic necks, that "this phenomenon might occur, but it is not fully proved in our fields," I beg to reply that the funnel and anticlinal-ring structure is actually associated with igneous intrusions in the Mexican oil fields, as we were able to ascertain by plotting an underground contour map and making a structural model of the oil-bearing beds of the Ebano field. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James-Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

Awakened public interest in efforts to conserve natural resources will certainly be appreciated by the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and a discussion upon conservation may well form a part of one of the Institute meetings, for the records of papers and discussions which appear in the 38 volumes of its Transactions are replete with evidence of efforts in this direction. Every process which reduces the fuel consumed or the power applied per unit of product; every utilization of waste material, or employment of that formerly rejected, to obtain something of value; every feature of construction or operation which lessens the labor required or increases the output per employee, is an advance in the direction of true conservation. The extraction of gold from refractory ores containing activated carbon and various types of carbon compounds is being done commercially for the first time at Carlin, Nev., by Carlin Gold Mining Co. Oxidation of the carbonaceous materials to CO and CO,- is accomplished by the introduction of chlorine into an aqueous pulp. The chlorine reacts with the limestone in the ore to form calcium hypochlorite which in turn reacts with the carbonaceous matter to form calcium chloride, CO, and CO.. Following the oxidation treatment the ore is cyanided in the conventional manner. For the first six months of operation the plant averaged 83% extraction at a feed rate of 500 tpd and a consumption of 28.4 lb chlorine per ton of ore which showed only 33.5% extraction by conventional cyanidation without the oxidation pretreatment.

A new probabilistic approach is introduced for slope stability analysis including adverse impact of blasting vibrations. The material strength within a slope area is randomized in this bi-variate joint probability analysis. To be a completely general engineering method, the new probabilistic approach employs the random variable transformation technique: the Hermite model of the Gaussian transformation function, which transforms the experimental histogram of strength values to the standard Gaussian variables. Because bi- normal joint probability is analyzed on the true probability region projected on the Gaussian transformed variable plane, it is an exact solution of slope stability based on the available sample data. Details of the probabilistic approach are given through a case study on an iron ore mine. The case study demonstrated that the probabilistic approach is effective and simple enough to be a routine engineering practice for slope analysis.

Dick Hunt is known for having said, "Ore bodies are found but mines are made." This was certainly true of the Ertsberg-it was stumbled upon, literally, by a group of mountain climbers, but to develop it into a mine took 12 years of concerted effort. For more than a century, explorers had attempted to penetrate the jungles of New Guinea and climb the snow-covered Mt. Carstensz, named for a Dutch navigator who first saw it in 1620. But the first to succeed was the Colijn expedition which reached the 5030-m (16,500-ft) pinnacle in December 1936 after starting out from the south coast57 days earlier. Members of that expedition were A. H. Colijn and Jean Jacques Dozy, employees of Shell Oil Co., and Lt. Wissel, a pilot in the Royal Dutch Navy.
