RECORDS in mining operations naturally fall when improved equipment and methods are developed. And tunneling through the Continental Divide is a mining operation, even though the tunnel was not driven to strike a vein at depth. Although many engineering feats have been successfully accomplished in the development of water supplies in the Western States, the Twin Lakes Tunnel in Colorado presents some unusual features that make it noteworthy. To begin with, it is the first trans-mountain water diversion project in the West. The fact that the Continental Divide intervenes between where the water is and where it is needed was brushed, aside as of minor importance. It was enough to know that on the western side of Independence Pass, the highest in Colorado, with an elevation of 12,095 ft., there was water which was needed on the eastern side, where the Twin Lakes are situated, forming the

As most of the industrial activity of Oregon is centered in the Portland area, the foundries there consume the bulk of the foundry sand produced in Oregon. Although a number of the larger towns scattered throughout the state have gray-iron foundries, the sand used by most of them is of local origin: The yearly consumption of foundry sand of all types for the past few war years in Oregon is estimated to have been approximately 40,000 tons valued at about $285,000, of which an estimated 18,000 tons was shipped in from the Ottawa, Ill., district for use largely by the steel foundries. Until 1945 much of the silica sand consumed by the steel foundries in the Pacific Northwest, approximately 50,000 tons in 1944, came from Ottawa, Ill. and surrounding regions. Although some silica sand was shipped in from Belgium in the past, none is known to have been imported in recent years. Early in 1945, a very promising high-grade silica sand being produced near Eugene, Oregon, was introduced, and all but two of the Portland steel foundries are using this new sand. Until a few years ago, the search for good local (Oregon) foundry sands was carried on largely by the foundry supply houses. Recently the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries has investigated a number of deposits and has carried on and fostered research on the most promising deposit near Eugene, about 120 miles south of Portland. High-grade silica foundry sand from this deposit is now being marketed in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The Eugene sand is one of the very few outstanding western steel-foundry sands. Field investigations by the Oregon Department show that there are relatively few deposits of sand in Oregon suitable for foundry use. A knowledge of the geology of the state makes this readily understandable. The only major primary sources of the quartz present in sandstones in Oregon are the intrusive masses of granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite of late Jurassic or early Cretaceous age found in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestetn Oregon, a part of the old Klamath Mountain highland, and in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Transportation militates against the development of any possible deposits of foundry sand found east of the Cascade Mountains in central and eastern Oregon because few railroads traverse that area. East of the Cascades, which separate western from eastern Oregon, many of the older sediments of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age have either been metamorphosed or contain much volcanic eruptive material, and even if some of the Mesozoic sediments are highly quartzose in places, they are in relatively inaccessible areas. All the Tertiary sediments there are of continental origin and contain much ash and other volcanic debris, for there was great volcanic activity during much of that period. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was completed at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator at Hurley, New Mexico. At that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of principal copper minerals, chalcopyrite and chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite, much of which occurs as intimately associated chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the desired pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. Test Work Plant test work on a lime control system using conventional pH probes gave disappointing results with high electrode maintenance and poor control characteristics. For example, the rougher flotation cells are operated at a pH between 11.4 and 11.6 and the probes required cleaning at least once a day, and occasionally every shift. These high maintenance requirements were considered unreasonable for a plant-wide system using six or more control loops.

WHEN I was getting data for my books on ore dressing, I traveled across the continent, visiting a great many mills, always accompanied by my vanning shovel, and I got to be a joke among the millmen. They would say "Here comes the Professor with his vanning shovel." With the aid of this vanning shovel, I examined the tailings of all the mills I visited and I found it to be universally true that they contained some extremely fine, free mineral. I looked everywhere to see if I could find a machine or a process that would save this fine mineral. But nowhere did I find anything that made any bid for success until I visited the Kennedy mill, with its Gates canvas plant, on the Mother Lode of California. There I found that the tailings of the Frue vanners were put into a one-spigot classifier of good design which yielded a spigot product entirely free from this fine, free mineral which only assayed 40c. to the ton in gold. The overflow was extremely fine and as¬sayed $3 to the ton. This overflow was fed to ten canvas tables each 10 ft. square, with the grain of the canvas running across the table to make for the roughest surface. The canvas used was No. 6 cotton duck sail cloth.

The theory of probability with respect to the failure of structures is discussed. It is shown that the probability of safety, probability of failure, and factor of safety are directly related to each other and that as standard deviation approaches zero, the probability curves approach a unit step function which can be interpreted as the conventional factor of safety. The factor of safety is numerically the ratio of the load to the strength of the material at a particular point or plane in an engineering structure. Mathematically, it can be illustrated as a unit step function undefined at the point where the factor of safety is one (Fig. 1). The uncertainty of variation of soil and rock strengths require factors of safety much higher than those used in other engineering structures. The factors of safety used are generally determined from past experiences with similar structures. However, the factors thus determined do not have any theoretical meaning or do not indicate any relationship to actual safety.' It seems, therefore, logical to develop a system with a sound theoretical basis to obtain a more suitable factor of safety for structures. An application of elementary theory of probability indicates that it is possible to relate this number to theoretical and practical engineering facts.

THE aggregate number of "papers" read within any one year before more or less bored and bewildered audiences is simply appalling. We have seventy to eighty engineering societies alone, not to speak of the many hundreds of societies of every other imaginable kind. And each meets at least once a year to tell what it has found out since the last meeting. All this is very fine and fortunate, at least in the case of the scientific and technological societies; for if even only one significant discovery, one new truth, one new idea comes out at the meeting, the session has been abundantly justified. To many of us, not scientists or technologists, the scientific and technological societies seem to release by far the most useful and important information. What they have to say is often of prime importance directly to human life and to industry, and is perhaps even more important indirectly in its final influence upon social and economic conditions, thus ultimately determining the course of what we like to call civilization. The paper read by that quiet, unpretentious man on the platform ma; mean the revolutionizing of a great existing industry, the creation of an entirely new industry, the gain of millions of dollars to some persons, the loss of millions to others. But, lamentably,

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. It can be concluded that rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic mapping, and operations research in combination will produce an accurate estimate of tunnel support requirements for establishing a steel-set load prediction model. This estimate can be used to increase safety and to reduce tunneling costs. Unnecessary supports can be eliminated; overloaded or insufficient supports can be replaced on a more scientific basis than previously possible. Only a limited number of measurements are required to develop a steel set load prediction model. The results of this study can be applied generally; but, every tunnel must be considered as a separate problem. The construction and geologic variables which were found to be significant in the prediction of rock loads in this tunnel were: steel section modulus, set blocking points, percentage of alteration, relative degree of faulting, relative water condition, distance to the nearest fault, and average joint spacing. INTRODUCTION A combined engineering geology and rock mechanics program was performed throughout the Straight Creek tunnel pilot bore in Colorado in order to develop a technique for estimation of steel tunnel support loads. The technique involves the construction of a statistical model from measured steel set loads, geologic and construction factors. The aim of the investigation was to produce a set of charts, based on these factors, which could be used by a trained man equipped with a hand lens and measuring tape, to specify a safe and economical steel size and set spacing. In order to be of practical value the measured parameters had to be rapidly measurable and capable of quantification. It was apparent from the beginning that quantitative values for many of the geologic factors would have to be arbitrary. It was impossible to ascertain in advance which of the readily determi-nable geologic and construction factors significantly affect steel set loading. As the investigation progressed the number of observations was systematically reduced in order to determine the minimum amount of data which would be necessary for a significant mathematical model. This paper presents an analysis of all the variables measured at each instrumented steel set. The statistical significance of the measured variables was determined. On the basis of this determination, a mathematical model was constructed and charts were prepared to select and space the steel tunnel supports at any given point in the tunnel. Once the effect of geologic and construction factors on set loading is sufficiently established, it is possible to exert close control over the selection of steel tunnel support size and spacing. The magnitude of this rock mechanics program can be appreciated when it is known that there were 44 instrumentation stations for which steel set loads were measured. For each of these sets there were three construction variables recorded, and nine geologic parameters determined (Table I). A rough approximation of the cost for both the collection and reduction of the data would be $50,000. This is in addition to the cost of geologic mapping.

IN making comparisons of steel industries, one country with another, the convenient common denominator is annual capacity to make raw steel in the form of ingots. It is always necessary, however, to remember that there are different methods of figuring such capacity. For most countries no official figures on capacity are available, and the only authentic data on production are now six or eight years old. But in spite of those limitations on the accuracy of statistical comparisons, any flaws in the figures are probably not serious enough to alter materially the larger conclusions which may be drawn from them.

T.P. 1958 D. H. DAVIS.*-Mr. Carris has ably pre¬sented the problems of coal preparation, particularly those brought about as the result of increased mechanical loading. Many mines are now crushing the run-of¬-mine raw coal through 12 or 15 in. immediately after it is dumped from the mine car and before it is handled by conveyors. At certain mines the removal of large slate mechanically has been solved by the installation of scalping screens consisting of bars or rails set at spacing of 12 to 15 in. on the top deck of the main raw-coal sizing screen. At the plants where these are in use, the plus 12 or I5-in. raw material contains 60 per cent or more free rock or slate, so that it is easier to pick coal than to pick rock. After the screening at 12 or 15 in. is accomplished, the oversize material is diverted to one side of the shaker, where a picker allows the refuse to pass off the shaker into a chute and guides the coal back onto the shaker. After the large rock has been removed, it is then advisable to reduce the size of rock by crushing before putting it onto a conveyor. A great saving in picking labor has been made by the use of such scalping screens, which in addition has maintained the plant capacity when handling a dirtier feed. The great increase in percentage of coal under 1/4 or 3/8 in., coupled with a greatly increased percentage of free impurities in this size, is the most serious problem that has been brought about by mechaniced loading. Many plants that formerly prepared good quality 1/4-in. to o or 3/8-in. to 0 slack by air¬cleaning are faced with installing facilities for wet-cleaning mechanical and heat-drying and water clarification. The change to wet prepa¬ration of fines usually affects the marketing problems for many coal companies. There will also be problems involving wastage of fine solids and stream pollution. Much work will be necessary for improvements in present practice. Pneumatic and electrostatic methods for cleaning fine coal should receive consider¬able attention in an attempt to avoid wet¬cleaning of fines. The preparation supervisor and the plant personnel should not be satisfied merely to run the cleaning-plant machinery and assume that the job will be done for them. Coal is a heterogeneous substance and in many instances is constantly changing. This is more true when full-seam methods are in use. Only persons trained to observe closely and make the necessary changes in plant operation will be able to solve the many problems that will be imposed on the preparation plants. The plants will require skillful and observant operating men. With full-seam mining methods, seams of roof coal will often be mined. Under the former mining systems these strata were not mined and frequently they contain a high per¬centage of bony and banded partings. The mining of this coal will greatly alter the washability and specific gravity characteristics of the feed to the plant. Often the percentage of 1.40 to 1.60 sp. gr. increased from 3.5 to 7.5 per cent, or nearly a 1.0 per cent increase in the ash content of the 1.60 sp. gr. float coal. Thus the cleaning problem is much more difficult, and it is unlikely the same ash content of cleaned coal can be produced as before without a decrease in recovery or the produc¬tion of a "middlings" product. THE study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manu-facture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the con-sideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improve-ments, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph5, whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality.

An experimental study is discussed of the state of strain, deformation and fracture around lined and unlined cylindrical cavities in rock under biaxial compressive static loading. The specimens were limestone plates 36 in. high, 24 in. wide and 3 in. thick with a 4 in. diameter hole unlined or lined with hydrostone and aluminum liners. The ratio of horizontal to vertical applied stress was one-third. Experimental techniques used were strain gages, differential transformers and photoelastic coatings. Strain distributions were plotted along the horizontal axis of symmetry for various levels of applied stress. The agreement with theory was good at low stress levels but appreciable deviations occurred at higher levels and near the hole. The experimental strain concentration factor was nearly the same, slightly higher and appreciably higher than the theoretical value for the hydrostone-lined, unlined and aluminum-lined specimens, respectively. Failure modes were splitting along a vertical plane for the unlined and hydrostone-fined specimens, compressive (shear) failure for one unlined specimen and splitting with radial cracking for the aluminum-lined specimen. In the latter, a maximum tensile stress of more than three times the uniaxial tensile strength existed at the interface with the liner at the time of fracture,

THIS essay is an attempt to present the elementary facts and ideas concerning the growth of crystals, especially of metals. Freezing, like all heterogeneous processes, is a process of nucleation and growth; it manifests itself in metallurgy primarily in the freezing of ingots. The preceding paper in this volume discusses nucleation; the paper to follow describes ingot solidification. The present paper will treat of the growth of nuclei to large crystals, embracing a long series of phenomena, many of which are familiar to metallurgists.† Crystal growth, it will be immediately noted, occurs not only in the freezing of metals, but in the freezing of all substances; and it is a prominent and familiar phenomenon in crystallization from solutions, aqueous or otherwise, and in crystallization from the vapor phase. It will be necessary to include such systems in this discussion, for so much of value to metallurgists has been learned from their study. Apart from this, so far as metals are concerned, it will be simpler to limit the discussion to the freezing of pure metals and of solid solutions. Other types of freezing-eutectic, peritectic, etc.-will be excluded, though they have much of interest and of importance. BASIC MECHANISM OF FREEZING Ideally, nucleation and growth processes can best be considered from the point of view of isothermal reaction and upon the assumption of random nucleation. In. such an ideal case, nuclei form at random, and at a characteristic rate either constant or changing with time, and grow to spherulites at a characteristic rate, constant or changing with time, Fig. I.. On the simplest assumption, the reaction rate-in this case the rate of freezing-is a resultant of these two component rates. The reaction rate equation may be written in terms of these two component rates. The formation of pearlite from austenite closely approaches this ideal case. The ideal case forms a very useful point of departure in considering real cases. Various factors of reality produce deviations from this assumed ideality. In freezing, the isotropic medium, the melt, passes to the anisotropic solid, the crystal. Crystals are lattices of atoms, and the unit cell is often referred to as a crystal unit. Rosenhain, many years ago, represented the nucleation and growth process on freezing in the manner shown in Fig. 2, feeling, intuitively, that there must be some crystal unit in crystal growth. It now appears that this may be true, though his picture requires much elaboration. The greatest deviation from ideality lies in the nonisothermal nature of the freezing process in metals. To approach this properly it should be recalled that many nonmetallic substances freeze slowly. RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

In the experimental work for this comparison of wet and dry grinding, it was found that the size distributions for wet grinding operations are characterized by a constant value of the distribution modulus, (a; whereas, for dry grinding the distribution modulus decreases slightly with increased size reduction. Wet grindability seems independent of the weight of material in the mill while dry grindability depends on weight. Experimental data and eqmtions for each process are presented for noncleavable isotropic material, for cleavable or material in which there is some form of internal stress, and for energy consumption. The equation ED/EW=BK-? (where ED and Ew are, respectively, energy for wet and dry grinding, k is the size modulus, and B and ? are constants) was found to give the ratio of energy. Dry grinding is generally considered to require more energy than wet grinding. Taggart' states that power consumption in wet grinding ranges from 60 to 90 pct of that required for dry grinding. Bond' states that dry grinding requires one third more power than wet grinding. It is interesting that Rose and Sullivan' note this same difference in power required for wet and dry grinding, but they state that on purely mechanical grounds it is difficult to see any great difference in fundamental principles between wet and dry milling, since dry milling may be regarded as wet milling with a fluid of low viscosity (i.e., air vs water). Yet it must be the viscosity of the fluid that is responsible for the differences between wet and dry grinding. Probably the most comprehensive investigation comparing wet and dry grinding has been that made by Coghill and Devaney. They compared the grind-ability of both chert and dolomite in a 19x36-in. batch ball mill under both wet and dry conditions. In these tests the weight of ore in the mill was varied from 35 to 200 lb and each grinding test was carried out for such period of time that the amount of -200-mesh material in the product was essentially the same for each test with a given material. Cog-hill and DeVaney's data for the grindability of dolomite, which are reproduced in Fig. 1, show that a comparison between wet and dry grinding is com- plex. The comminution of a material by a wet grinding method is characterized by a constant grindability over a wide range of mill loadings. Since grindability is the weight of material comminuted per unit of energy expended, it is equivalent to (w)/ (p)(t), where W is the weight of material being ground, P is the power, and t is the grinding time. In the case of wet grinding, the grindability of dolomite in the Coghill and DeVaney experiments was 0.546 * 0.009 ton per hp-hr when the load of dolomite in the mill ranged from 50 to 200 lb. On the other hand, for dry grinding no such simple relationship was found to exist between power, time, and weight of material in the mill. THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.' In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

The high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as tcrne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys. 1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. Apparatus and Method The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from M to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. + 0.1". Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge.
