It has been shown elsewhere1 that the data on the rates of diffusion in solid metals are fragmentary and in many cases unacceptable. As a result, relatively little is known concerning the factors determining rates of diffusion and the variations in these rates with temperature. The first form of Fick's law (equation 1 below), in which the diffusion coefficient D is assumed invariant with composition, has been recognized for many years as only an approximation. The differential equation representing the second form of Fick's law (equation 4 below) has only recently been integrated by Matano,2 and unfortunately only in cases where a full diffusion-penetration curve (concentration-distance curve) has been obtained can the Matano solution be applied. The proper analysis of diffusion data is thus confined to the data of Grube and Jedele and of Jedele. 8 These data are essentially for one temperature alone and do not furnish any information on the variation of the activation heat of diffusion, Q, with concentration: no information exists on the variation of Q with concentration within a single solid solution field. 11 Much of the argument concerning the properties of metals that determine D and Q has been drawn from data in which variations of the quantities with concentration are unknown, for these data have been taken from experiments that could not furnish this information. Speculation concerning the properties of metals that may be effective in determining D and Q on the basis of data in which the chosen D and Q values are averages over wide concentration ranges of values at particular concentrations, ranges often of 100 per cent, is likely not to be fruitful.

The authors have recently published1 evidence that brittle transgranular fracture of polycrystalline metals does not originate at a point and propagate continuously across the material, but rather develops at numerous related points, leading to a series of micro-cracks which subsequently link up. Series of related microcracks were observed in steel specimens broken in fatigue—specifically, at the central portions which broke during the final sudden fracture. Microcracks of the type mentioned have also been reported by Baeyertz, Craig and Bumps'2 in steel broken under impact. % Some micrographs published by Irwin3 may possibly be interpreted as showing discontinuous brittle cracks. This paper presents additional observations of the authors on discontinuous crack propagation under various conditions. Impact Test Specimens The impact test specimens were cut longitudinally from a steel forging containing: The heat treatment consisted of oil quenching in a heavy section from 1600°F and tempering at 1260°F. The resulting yield strength was 78,000 psi, tensile strength 100,000 psi, elongation 20.0 pet in 2 in., and reduction of area 55.0 pet. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were broken in a 217 ft-lb machine at a striking velocity of 16.8 fps. Energy absorption and fracture appearance of this material in the V-notch Charpy test are plotted as functions of temperature in Fig 1. After test, fractured halves of specimens appearing 0, 40, 80, and 100 pet fibrous (to the unaided eye) were electroplated with nickel, sectioned longitudinally (perpendicular to the notch at its midpoint), polished and etched with Cohen-Hurlich-Jacobson (C-H-J) reagent (picric acid plus Zephiran chloride in ethyl ether)4 or with Vilella reagent (1 pet picric plus 5 pct hydrochloric acid in ethyl alcohol).5 Fig 2 and 3 show cracks near the path of final fracture in the specimen rated 0 pct fibrous. Many of the cracks terminate at the boundaries of ferrite grains, some at boundaries of pre- existing austenite gzains. * A crack often starts near the end of another. Cracks within the same ferrite grains are parallel or approximately parallel in several cases. A large percentage of the cracks are branched. Fig 4 illustrated a group of cracks in the 40 pct fibrous specimen. Branching and parallelism are well marked. No more than three directions of crack have been observed on the polished surface in one ferrite grain. This is consistent with the evidence6 that brittle fracture of ferrite takes place on the cube face crystallographic planes: the {100} planes. The appearance of some cracks suggests that they have passed around a projecting corner of a second ferrite grain by going outside the plane of polish. As described in a previous presentation and in various patents, the Minerals Sciences Div. of UOP, Inc., has developed a modified reduction roast ammonia leach process for nickel laterites. This process gave considerable improvement in extraction over the conventional Caron approach as practiced in Cuba, Australia, and the Philippines. This greatly improved response was obtained with a wide variety of ores. This paper describes the pilot plant flowsheet and reviews the design features unique to the UOP process. Operating results from pilot plant campaigns are compared with bench scale results. Operating problems and their solutions are also discussed.

The material described below was made at Furnace No. 2, Longdale, Va., Oct. 28, 1907, during a sudden derangement of working, in the course of which the furnace became entirely bridged over and for some time no solid material whatever descended into the hearth. J. S. UNDER, Pittsburgh, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬In discussing Mr. Wysor's paper, I said that we were investigating the deposits around furnaces working on certain ferro alloys. Since the meeting, we have made a number of investigations, and have found that the deposits in the second and third passes of the hot-blast stoves, and near the stack at the boilers of furnaces working on spiegel and ferromanganese, contain about 15 per cent. total potash, of which 10 per cent. is water-soluble. The potash occurs mostly as potassium sulphate, a very small amount being present as potassium carbonate.

MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES On the tenth of January, 1919, a meeting was held by the juniors and seniors for the purpose of reorganizing the Missouri Mining Association. The reorganization was brought about in this manner because at that time there were no old members left in school. At that meeting, the following officers were elected for the remainder of the year: Gerald F. Rackett, president, Harland H. Hoppock, Secretary. THE CHAIRMAN (WALTER DOUGLAS, New York, N. Y.).--I presume, gentlemen, that Mr. Howard's experience with the Great Falls basic-lined converter has been as regards the tonnage produced from a single lining, perhaps, a world's record. About 6 months ago Mr. Howard shut down and tore out what was left of the first basic-lining which was installed at the Old Dominion, the lining having produced something over 70,000,000 lb. of copper. This was due probably not only to the very excellent grade of the matte which was produced by the smelter there,
