THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from ½ to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.1°. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. The State of Pennsylvania produces approximately 60 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania Grade oil, and naturally represents the dominant factor in the area producing that grade. The producing area comprises the states of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and a small part of Ohio. The importance of this area is too commonly neglected because it produces only 2 per cent of the total amount of crude produced in the United States. It is, of course, unimportant in its percentage of total crude production, but extremely important for its production of lubricating oil. The lubricating fraction from a barrel of Penllsylvania Grade crude oil represents about 22 per cent of the total, whereas the lubricating fraction from the total United States production represents only about 2.5 per cent of the crude oil. The Pennsylvania Grade area produces about 6,000,000 bbl. of lubricants, which is 15 to 20 per cent of the total produced in the United States. All Pennsylvania Grade lubricants are classified as "high-grade," and with a production of 15 to 20 per cent of the total lubricants, it appears probable that the Pennsylvania Grade area accounts for 25 to 50 per cent of the high-grade lubricants produccd in the United States. Production Bradford Field The production figures quoted in Table I apply only to the part of the Bradford held that lies wholly within the state of Pennsylvania; approximately 15 per cent of the Bradford field is in Cattaraugus County, New York, and 10 per cent of the production is obtained from that sector. The Bradford-field production in 1941 was 12,729,900 bbl. as compared with a production in the year 1940 of 12,748,279 bbl., or a reduction of 18,379 bbl. The year 1941 represents the fourth successive year in which production in the Bradford field has declined. All of the production from the Bradford field is obtained by water-flooding methods and increases or decreases in production are due more to economic factors than to any physical limitations of the pool, inasmuch as additional drilling of water-intake and producing wells would increase the total production of the field. It is apparent that increased drilling of oil and water-intake wells does not take place except under stimulps of a favorable price; and while oil prices during 1941 were moderately favorable, they were not sufficient to prevent a mild decline. Too many wells were drilled in the Bradford field in 1937, but this was compensated by subnormal drilling activities in 1938 and 1939 and a large increase in 1940, The increase in 1941 over 1940 was about 7 per cent. The effect of new drilling is becoming less pronounced on a per well basis because more properties yielding less per acre are being drilled than were drilled in former years. In the Carlsbad area potash is dry-mined and wet-concentrated. Wet concentration involves recircu-lation of saturated brines, with resultant difficulties of brine disposal and inherent losses in recovery through solution of the KCl. A dry beneficiation process for potash minerals would offer many advantages over present methods. International Minerals & Chemical Corp. has been working on development of a dry process for some time. This article is a progress report. Potash ores available in this country are largely mixtures of halite and sylvite contaminated with slimes and often with many sulfate and magnesium minerals. Electrostatic concentration of KCl when the contaminating minerals are in low percentage has been accomplished. Continuous production of better than 60 pct K2O concentrate from high potassium sulfate ores has not been demonstrated at the present time. Laboratory Procedure: Laboratory work on electrostatic beneficiation of potash minerals has been carried out using both pure crystals and mined ore. Electrostatic separation of the two main components of potash ore, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is accomplished by first heat-treating the ore to allow for electric charging of the particles. Preferential exchange of' electrical charges between different mineral particles through surface contact is the principal mechanism involved. After proper conditioning of the particle surfaces, the oppositely charged minerals are dropped vertically into a horizontal electric field having a field gradient from about 5000 to 15,000 v per in. The particles are free-falling in the field. A suitable power supply is used to produce the proper total voltage for the electric field. Total required voltage is, of course, a function of electrode spacing. A typical electrode arrangement with power supply is shown in Fig. 1. In general, the total voltage on any system is 75,000 to 90,000 v. Power consumption is negligible, as leakage at insulators and corona discharge are the main losses in the system. Optimum preheat temperatures for pure material components generally are not the same as for mined minerals. Fig. 2 shows clearly that maximum recovery on a 50 pct pure KCl, 50 pct pure NaCl mixture occurs at a preheat temperature of about 600°F. In this test the preheat mixture was allowed to cool to about 225°F before dropping through the electric field. The optimum temperature for sep- aration is practically never the optimum temperature of preheat. Optimum separation for mined Carlsbad potash ores occurs when a preheat temperature closer to 900°F is used, as shown by Fig. 3, which plots percent sylvite (KCl) in the concentrate and tails as a function of preheat temperatures. Here again the ore was allowed to cool to about 225°F before separation. It should be noted that efficiency of separation increases continuously with increasing preheat temperatures until incipient fusion of the ore takes place at about 950°F. The increase in optimum preheat temperature for Carlsbad ores over the pure minerals can be traced to the effect of the clay slimes intimately associated with the mined potash. If the slimes associated with the ore are removed by washing with alcohol or other non-aqueous material, the necessity of preheating to the high temperature is removed. This temperature range has been proved critical within these limits during continuous pilot plant operation. Concentrate and tailings grade and optimum recovery also are functions of the temperature of the potash mineral particles during separation in the electric field. Fig. 4 presents data indicating that feed to the rougher pass should range between 150°F and 275°F for best results. It has been found by subsequent pilot plant work that these temperatures can be maintained in actual operation.

T.P. 1958 D. H. DAVIS.*-Mr. Carris has ably pre¬sented the problems of coal preparation, particularly those brought about as the result of increased mechanical loading. Many mines are now crushing the run-of¬-mine raw coal through 12 or 15 in. immediately after it is dumped from the mine car and before it is handled by conveyors. At certain mines the removal of large slate mechanically has been solved by the installation of scalping screens consisting of bars or rails set at spacing of 12 to 15 in. on the top deck of the main raw-coal sizing screen. At the plants where these are in use, the plus 12 or I5-in. raw material contains 60 per cent or more free rock or slate, so that it is easier to pick coal than to pick rock. After the screening at 12 or 15 in. is accomplished, the oversize material is diverted to one side of the shaker, where a picker allows the refuse to pass off the shaker into a chute and guides the coal back onto the shaker. After the large rock has been removed, it is then advisable to reduce the size of rock by crushing before putting it onto a conveyor. A great saving in picking labor has been made by the use of such scalping screens, which in addition has maintained the plant capacity when handling a dirtier feed. The great increase in percentage of coal under 1/4 or 3/8 in., coupled with a greatly increased percentage of free impurities in this size, is the most serious problem that has been brought about by mechaniced loading. Many plants that formerly prepared good quality 1/4-in. to o or 3/8-in. to 0 slack by air¬cleaning are faced with installing facilities for wet-cleaning mechanical and heat-drying and water clarification. The change to wet prepa¬ration of fines usually affects the marketing problems for many coal companies. There will also be problems involving wastage of fine solids and stream pollution. Much work will be necessary for improvements in present practice. Pneumatic and electrostatic methods for cleaning fine coal should receive consider¬able attention in an attempt to avoid wet¬cleaning of fines. The preparation supervisor and the plant personnel should not be satisfied merely to run the cleaning-plant machinery and assume that the job will be done for them. Coal is a heterogeneous substance and in many instances is constantly changing. This is more true when full-seam methods are in use. Only persons trained to observe closely and make the necessary changes in plant operation will be able to solve the many problems that will be imposed on the preparation plants. The plants will require skillful and observant operating men. With full-seam mining methods, seams of roof coal will often be mined. Under the former mining systems these strata were not mined and frequently they contain a high per¬centage of bony and banded partings. The mining of this coal will greatly alter the washability and specific gravity characteristics of the feed to the plant. Often the percentage of 1.40 to 1.60 sp. gr. increased from 3.5 to 7.5 per cent, or nearly a 1.0 per cent increase in the ash content of the 1.60 sp. gr. float coal. Thus the cleaning problem is much more difficult, and it is unlikely the same ash content of cleaned coal can be produced as before without a decrease in recovery or the produc¬tion of a "middlings" product. WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. THIS essay is an attempt to present the elementary facts and ideas concerning the growth of crystals, especially of metals. Freezing, like all heterogeneous processes, is a process of nucleation and growth; it manifests itself in metallurgy primarily in the freezing of ingots. The preceding paper in this volume discusses nucleation; the paper to follow describes ingot solidification. The present paper will treat of the growth of nuclei to large crystals, embracing a long series of phenomena, many of which are familiar to metallurgists.† Crystal growth, it will be immediately noted, occurs not only in the freezing of metals, but in the freezing of all substances; and it is a prominent and familiar phenomenon in crystallization from solutions, aqueous or otherwise, and in crystallization from the vapor phase. It will be necessary to include such systems in this discussion, for so much of value to metallurgists has been learned from their study. Apart from this, so far as metals are concerned, it will be simpler to limit the discussion to the freezing of pure metals and of solid solutions. Other types of freezing-eutectic, peritectic, etc.-will be excluded, though they have much of interest and of importance. BASIC MECHANISM OF FREEZING Ideally, nucleation and growth processes can best be considered from the point of view of isothermal reaction and upon the assumption of random nucleation. In. such an ideal case, nuclei form at random, and at a characteristic rate either constant or changing with time, and grow to spherulites at a characteristic rate, constant or changing with time, Fig. I.. On the simplest assumption, the reaction rate-in this case the rate of freezing-is a resultant of these two component rates. The reaction rate equation may be written in terms of these two component rates. The formation of pearlite from austenite closely approaches this ideal case. The ideal case forms a very useful point of departure in considering real cases. Various factors of reality produce deviations from this assumed ideality. In freezing, the isotropic medium, the melt, passes to the anisotropic solid, the crystal. Crystals are lattices of atoms, and the unit cell is often referred to as a crystal unit. Rosenhain, many years ago, represented the nucleation and growth process on freezing in the manner shown in Fig. 2, feeling, intuitively, that there must be some crystal unit in crystal growth. It now appears that this may be true, though his picture requires much elaboration. The greatest deviation from ideality lies in the nonisothermal nature of the freezing process in metals. To approach this properly it should be recalled that many nonmetallic substances freeze slowly. There is a need for concepts and techniques developed specifically for blasting in areas where the rock is loose or highly fractured. Common practice has been to use techniques developed in hard homogeneous rock and reduce the amount and strength of explosive. However, this rule cannot cope with all of the special characteristics of highly fractured rock and has not adequately taken care of the problems of overbreak, gouging, and wall damage. The main problems encountered when blasting in highly fractured rock are controlling the amount of rock broken, minimizing the damage done to the remaining wall material, and adapting blasting methods to rapidly fluctuating ground conditions. In addition, because it frequently needs timber support right into the blasting area, there is also the problem of how not to shoot out the timber when heavy loading is needed in order to offset a loss of impact caused by deflection of the detonation wave off the numerous rock interfaces, and by the absorption of the wave by resilient clay particles. Another consideration is the fact that less attention needs to be directed toward producing satisfactory fragmentation of the broken rock. Those blasting methods designed for breaking hard rock into manageable segments are, as a rule, not needed in highly fractured rock which will usually break along its own numerous fracture lines.

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. It is always necessary, however, to remember that there are different methods of figuring such capacity. For most countries no official figures on capacity are available, and the only authentic data on production are now six or eight years old. But in spite of those limitations on the accuracy of statistical comparisons, any flaws in the figures are probably not serious enough to alter materially the larger conclusions which may be drawn from them.

The finite element method was originally developed in the aircraft industry to handle problems of stress distribution in complex airframe configurations. This paper describes how the method can be extended to problems of transient flow in porous media. In this approach, the continuum is replaced by a system of finite elements. By employing the variational principle, one can obtain time dependent solutions for the potential at every point in the system by minimizing a potential energy functional. The theory of the method is reviewed. To demonstrate its validity, nonsteady-state results obtained by the finite clement method are compared with those of typical boundary value problems for which rigorous analytical solutions are available. To demonstrate the power of this approach, solutions for the more complex problem of transient flow in layered systems with crossflow are also presented. The generality of this approach with respect to arbitrary boundary conditions and changes in rock properties provides a new method of handling problems of fluid flow in complex systems. INTRODUCTION Problems of transient flow in porous media often can be handled by the methods of analytical mathematics as long as the geometry or properties of the flow system do not become too complex. When the analytical approach becomes intractable, it is customary to resort to numerical methods, and a great variety of problems have been handled in this manner. One such method relies on the finite difference approach wherein the system is divided into a network of elements, and a finite difference equation for the flow into and out of each element is developed. The solution of the resulting set of equations usually requires a high speed computer. When heterogeneous systems of arbitrary geometry must be considered, however, this approach is sometimes difficult to apply and may require large amounts of computer time. The finite element method is a new approach that avoids these difficulties. It was developed originally in the aircraft industry to provide a refined solution for stress distributions in extremely complex airframe configurations. 27 Clough has recently reviewed the application of the finite element method in the field of structural mechanics.6 The technique has been applied successfully in the stress analysis of many complex structures.l, 27, 28 Recognition that this procedure can be interpreted in terms of variational procedures involving minimizing a potential energy functional7 leads naturally to its extension to other boundary value problems. In the field of heat flow, there recently have been introduced several approximate methods of solution that are based on variational principles.2-4, 17 By employing the variational principle in conjunction with the finite element idealization, a powerful solution technique is now available for determining the potential distribution within complex bodies of arbitrary geometry. In the finite element approximation of solids, the continuum is replaced by a system of elements. An approximate solution for the potential field within each element is assumed, and flux equilibrium equations are developed at a discrete number of points within the network of finite elements. For the case of steady-state heat flow, the technique is completely described by Zienkiewicz and Cheung.33 Since the flow of fluids in porous media is analogous to the flow of heat, Zienkiewicz et al. have employed the finite element method in obtaining steady-state solutions to heterogeneous and anisotropic seepage problems. 34 Taylor and Brown have used this method to investigate steady-state flow problems involving a free surface.25 The work of Gurtin has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the application of finite element methods to linear initial-value problems.12 As a result, Wilson and Nickell have recently

A method for the selection of the most suitable corrosion inhibitor for a particular system is given. The method involves the evaluation of surface passivity by means of copper ion displacement after the metal surface has been subjected to the corrosive atmosphere. The application of the method to the selection of suitable inhibitors for use in producing wells is described. Correlation with recognized laboratory tests has beet1 found to be good within the limitations of the test. The use of the test to evaluate inhibitor persistencc is described. INTRODUCTION Corrosion as it is associated with the industry shows wide variations in its qualitative as well as its quantitative aspects. This complicates the work of the corrosion engineer. In the past few years the efforts of the corrosion engineer have been further taxed by the large numbers of products being marketed as corrosion inhibitors by various manufacturers. These products are submitted to him together with a limited amount of data to support their use as inhibitors. The data are usually authentic and reliable yet all too often when these products are applied to an actual corrosive system the results are disappointing due to the ineffectiveness of the inhibitor and the corrosive system. The corrosion engineer must select a comparatively limited number of inhibitors for field trial from the large number available. The selection is usually made on the basis of a standardized laboratory test such as that adopted by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers or by field experience in an area; however, testing of this type is discouraging on large numbers of compounds, particularly in view of the specificity of environment. It has been an object of this work to devise a method which will allow the corrosion engineer to select the best inhibitor for a specific environment under field conditions. The test would of necessity be rapid and inexpensive. It would preferably eliminate the need for expensive and delicate instruments. STATEMENT OF THEORY The test as developed makes use of the fact that metal ions will be displaced from solution by metals having a more positive electrode potential. Thus, if an active iron surface is exposed to a solution of a copper salt, free copper will plate spontaneously on the iron surface as it is displaced from the salt solution by iron ions. If the iron surface is passified, as by coating with an insulating-type organic corrosion inhibitor, it is no longer capable of displacing the copper ions due to its own limited ionization. The result will be a change in the amount of copper plated upon exposure to a neutral copper salt solution. In practice it has been found possible to measure the magnitude of the alteration of the cell potential by determining the copper deposited on a standard iron surface under controlled conditions. This means that, as the film builds up, the resulting shift in the electrode potential tends to cause the iron surface to act more like a noble metal, resulting in a reduction in the cell potential to a point that copper will no longer plate spontaneously. Obviously, the salts of other metals such as silver, gold or platinum might be used for this operation; however, copper was selected because of the color difference of the plate, the comparatively low cost of copper salts and the ease of evaluation of the plated copper. Furthermore, its high cell potential provides a substantial driving energy. The determination of the copper is readily done colorimetrically by dissolving it in 5 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution containing 2 per cent potassium per-sulfate. The blue color of the copper ammonic complex ion so developed may be compared with standards prepared by dissolving known quantities of copper powder in the same reagent. In routine screening it is seldom desirable to determine the amount of copper plated. It is usually more important to determine the concentration of inhibitor required to prevent the plating of copper.

RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

SYSTEMATIC investigations of the Fe-Ga system have been reported only very recently."' The maximum solid solubility of gallium in a-Fe is nearly 50 at. pet at 900°C. However, from Ref. 1, it was not evident that the a-Fe solid solution could be retained successfully beyond 17.38 at. pet Ga by solid-state quenching. The present investigation reports the retention of a-Fe solid solution at 50 at. pet Ga by quenching from the liquid. An ordered phase of CsC1-type B2) structure was observed between 34 - 50 at. pet Ga. Since it was considered very probable that the CsCl structure would occur at high temperatures, alloy filings were also quenched by the conventional quenching technique. In addition to the CsCl phase, a second ordered phase of BiF3-type (DO3) structure was found in the range 25 - 30 at. pet Ga. Alloys were prepared from elements of 99.99 pet purity or better, induction-melted in alumina crucibles under hydrogen. After reweighing, the alloy ingots were cast into wires under argon. From the weight losses and the reproducibility of the lattice parameters, compositions were estimated to be within ± 0.3 at. pet. The techniques of quenching from the liquid state were reported before.3-5 Prior to quenching, a small section of cast alloy wire (30 - 50 mg) was melted in an alumina insert under an argon flow. The quenched specimens were in the form of flakes, typically 1 sq mm in area. For solid-state quenching, alloy filings passing 200 mesh were sealed under a reduced helium atmosphere in a thin-bottom silica tube. After heating for -30 min at the desired temperature in a vertical furnace, the sealed tube was rapidly dropped into ice water so that the thin bottom of the tube broke on impact. The quenched alloy filings were always ferromagnetic and could be collected by a magnet. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with iron-filtered cobalt radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. High-angle lines were always resolved and spacings were computed relative to ? (CoKa1) = 1.78890Å. Lattice parameters were obtained from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. The variation of lattice parameter with composition is shown in Fig. 1, together with the data of Dasarathy and Hume-Rothery.1 Uncertainties in the present measurements are within the dimensions of the symbols or indicated by error bars. X-ray diffraction lines indicative of CsC1-type ordering could be clearly identified for alloys of 34 - 50 at. pet Ga quenched from the liquid and alloys of 35 - 41 at. pet Ga quenched from -975°C. Mining companies are unique in that they extract mineral resources and must therefore deal with ecological disturbances and other special problems. Like most enterprises, however, their primary motive must be to make money. The problem of mining investment starts with the question of what "make money" means. This article proposes an answer consistent with what economists call the theory of the firm and then applies it to two of the common, and perhaps unrecognized, problems connected with min¬ing investment. In essence, the concepts presented here call for thinking to terms of the income change associated with a given change it outlays or operating procedures To illustrate. ABC Distributing Co. has just discovered the power of advertising. It has raised its annual advertising budget from $25,000 to $50,000, and sales have, zoomed from 250.000 to 350,000 units. The company buy, for 50e per unit and sells at $l. This move has produced $50,000 of operating income for $25.000 in additional advertising expense. This looks great, so the next year the advertising budget goes up to $100,000. Sales go to 440,000 units. With 90,000 more units at 50[c] per unit, ABC sales are up by $45.000. Its advertising costs, however, went up $50,000.

DURING 1937 the subject of mining geology was probably given more attention and more mining geologists were usefully employed than at any previous time. Of the many contributing factors the most important were: (1) a higher degree of prosperity in many countries, (2) a. better understanding of geologic phenomena, and (3) the apparently diminishing reserves of several important minerals. Mining companies have come to look upon geology with a growing appreciation of its aid in the more effective exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits. Most of the larger and more active companies have one or more geologists permanently attached to their staffs and some have well organized and efficiently managed geological departments. Even the smaller companies, who feel they cannot afford to employ a geologist on a permanent basis, are seeking the advice of competent men in this field with increasing frequency. One of the most significant trends has been the growing tendency to base exploratory work on more thorough geologic studies instead of empirical "hunches,"on which so much off the work in the past has relied. Likewise, mining companies are apparently more willing to expend larger sums on the basis of geologic possibilities in a district.
