INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dis-sociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous for in of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a =6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO2 and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. ' I HE fabrication of many materials from powders involves a sintering process. A mass of powder will sinter because of the excess free energy over the same mass in the densified state caused by the higher total surface area of the powder. An understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of sintering should assist in improving the properties of such materials. The present investigation conducted at the NACA Lewis laboratory deals with the sintering of chromium carbide. Dry sintering (sintering at a temperature below the melting point) was divided into two stages by Shaler:' the first stage, during which the particles preserve much of their original shape and the voids are interconnected, and the second stage, during which densification occurs and the pores are isolated. The mechanism of forming interfaces between particles, or welding together of particles, has been investigated by Kuczynski2 and may be described by any one or a combination of the following mechanisms: viscous flow, evaporation and condensation, volume diffusion, or surface diffusion. The mechanism by which pores are closed or eliminated (densification) during sintering, is of interest. Grain growth observed during sintering may be attributed to the variation in the surface energies of individual grains, causing some grains to grow at the expense of others. Grain boundary migration occurs presumably by a diffusion process, therefore the rate of grain growth would be expected to increase exponentially with increasing time and temperature. Thus, for practical sintering times of less than 1 hr, a certain minimum temperature may exist at which major structural and property changes will occur. Densification and kinetics of grain growth during sintering under pressure of chromium carbide were investigated to provide additional information which will aid in describing more accurately the sintering process and the mechanisms involved. This material was selected for this study because of the current interest in high strength, oxidation resistant refractory materials, such as carbides, which are sintered to produce solid, dense materials from powders. Sintering under pressure is a process where the heat and pressure are applied to the compact simultaneously, specimens for this work were prepared by sintering under pressure at different temperatures and for various time periods. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Specimens: Chemical analysis of the commercial chromium carbide used in this investigation was as follows: Cr 86.19 pct, C 12.14 pct, and Fe 0.2 pct. X-ray diffraction powder patterns gave characteristic diffraction lines of Cr3C2 crystal structure. Powder particle size was determined microscopically and the average initial particle size was 6 microns with 85 pct between 2 and 10 microns. Specimens sintered under pressure were formed in graphite dies3 heated by induction. Sintering temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer by sighting into a 3/8-in. hole drilled 1 in. deep at the midsection of the graphite die. A load of approximately 1 ton per sq in. was applied to the powder. The die assembly was heated in 20 min to the highest temperature (2500°F') at which no increase in grain size could be observed, and less than 2.5 min were required to heat from this temperature to the maximum temperature (3000°F). Sintering temperatures and times for the specimens of this investigation are indicated in Table I. Analysis of Specimens: Specimens polished with diamond abrasives were etched to reveal the grain boundaries with a 1:1 mixture of 20 pct potassium hydroxide and 20 pct potassium ferricyanide heated to 160°F. Representative areas of each sample were photographed at 1000 diameters. The largest diameters of all well-defined grains were measured, but only the measurements of 15 of the largest grains were averaged in order to determine an index of grain size on the assumption that they were among the first to begin growth. Densities were determined from differential weighing of the samples in air and water. The reported density values are considered correct within ±0.01 g per milliliter. Results and Discussion Metal compacts have exhibited grain growth when sintered at temperatures about two-thirds of the absolute temperature of their melting point.' Grain growth also occurs during the sintering of chromium carbide and is illustrated by the micrographs shown in Fig. 1. These micrographs were prepared from specimens sintered for 90 min at temperatures ranging from 1371°C (2500°F) to 1648°C (3000°F). Diamond is the hardest known material. The diamond industry is separated into two major segments: (1) industrial and (2) gem. The major industrial use of diamonds is as a high-grade abrasive in a wide variety of applications for which no effective low-cost substitute is available. Table 15.4C.1 gives data on diamond production and on United States diamond imports. In both gem and industrial diamond production, but especially in the case of gems, the quantity of stones produced is not directly correlated to value, for the determination of value is markedly affected by quality. South Africa long has been the world leader in gem diamond production with an estimated production in 1968 (including South-West Africa) of about 4 million carats, equal to 43% of world production. During the past decade there has been a marked rise in gem diamond production in the USSR, so that nation is now the second-ranking world producer, with Angola (Portuguese West Africa) third. In natural industrial diamonds, the major production comes from Congo-Kinshasa (former Belgian Congo) which had a production of 15 million carats in 1968, equal to 47% of world production. In the past six years, there has been a remarkable increase of industrial diamond production in the USSR, which now ranks second with a production of 6 million carats, equal to about one-fifth of world production. South Africa now ranks third followed by Congo-Brazzaville and Ghana. No natural diamonds are produced in the United States. Since the discovery of an economical method for synthesizing small diamonds, there has been a rapid increase in synthetic production from 4 million carats in 1962 (1 carat equals 200 mg) to 11.5 million carats in 1968. Table 15.4C.1 gives the gradually increasing imports of industrial diamonds and indicates a relatively stable price. In 1968, the imports of industrial diamonds were 13.5 million carats with a value of $59.2 million. Table 15.4C.2 shows the rapidly increasing imports of cut and uncut gem diamonds into the United States. In 1968 the United States imported 2.5 million carats of uncut stones with a value of $166 million and 1.5 million carats of cut stones with a value of $175 million. Diamond marketing is dominated by DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., which, through subsidiaries, controls many of the major African diamond deposits. More important economically, however, through its Central Selling Organization, DeBeers markets 86% of the non-Communist world's natural diamonds, including most of those derived from deposits outside of corporate control. In 1967 the mines owned by DeBeers produced nearly 8 million carats, and the Central Selling Organization sold over $600 million in gem and industrial diamonds. The dominance of diamond sales by

A method is described for purifying iron in batches of 150 Ib or more. Oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur are removed from flakes of electrolytic iron by treatment in wet and then dry hydrogen. A special consumable-electrode arc furnace is used to remove hydrogen and to melt the flakes into ingots. A LTHOUGH iron and steel have been made and used for hundreds of years, there are still wide gaps in the knowledge of these metals. One reason for this is that the true properties of the base metal, iron, are not well known, simply because really pure iron has never been readily available for research purposes. Commercial iron, and even the "pure" irons which are readily available, are really complex alloys of iron with oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, sulphur, silicon, and other elements. With such materials, it has not been possible to prepare steels and other iron-base alloys in which all elements are present in exactly controlled amounts. It is an almost impossible task to determine the separate effects of each element or the intereffects of several elements unless alloys can be prepared containing only the desired elements. The ability to make controlled alloys of low impurity content is of far more than academic interest. It will assist in the study of such practical problems as the brittle failure of ship hulls or high pressure gas pipelines, determination of the factors which affect the deep-drawing properties of steels, the improvement of magnetic and electrical properties, the phenomenon of aging, and many others. In 1949, the American Iron and Steel Institute asked Battelle Memorial Institute to prepare high purity iron on a larger scale than had been attempted up to that time. The work was directed toward the preparation of iron as low as possible in carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur because these are the contaminating elements of major interest in many research investigations on iron-base alloys. The initial goal was to prepare iron with not more than a few thousandths of one percent of each of these impurities. The purpose was to set up a "bank" of high purity iron on which researchers could draw when a supply was needed and which could be replenished from time to time as the stock became depleted. Of several possible purification methods, heating in hydrogen was selected as the most promising for the removal of both carbon and oxygen from solid iron. Metallic impurities are not removed by hydrogen. Electrolytic iron was chosen as a starting material because it is the most readily available form of iron low in metallic impurities. Decarburization and desulphurization were obtained by annealing in wet hydrogen at relatively low temperatures. The optimum temperature, as found by previous investigators,' is about 1400°F. This treatment also removes nitrogen. Deoxidation is favored by dry hydrogen and higher temperature. There is evidence from previous work that an anneal at 2200°F in dry hydrogen will deoxidize the iron, reduce the nitrogen content, and reduce the sulphur content. These facts suggested the use of a two-stage process: treatment in wet hydrogen followed by treatment in dry hydrogen. To carry out the purification process in a reasonable time, it was necessary that the iron be in thin pieces. Flakes of electrolytic iron were used. Because most research requires that the iron be in massive form, it was nccessary to melt the purified iron to consolidate it into large pieces. For this work, it was decided to prepare ingots weighing at least 15 lb by using a cold hearth arc-melting process in which the iron was melted in an inert atmosphere of argon or helium. This method of melting was selected because the water-cooled copper crucible is not wet by the iron and does not contaminate it as a refractory crucible would. Because the crucible is also the ingot mold, contamination from mold materials was also eliminated. Contamination from electrodes was avoided by making them from purified electrolytic iron. The melting procedure finally developed was an adaptation of the Kellogg electric ingot process.' Two batches of purified iron weighing about 100 Ib each in ingot form were prepared with analyses as shown in Table I. The remainder of this paper describes the procedures in more detail. FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. THE little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water's edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. In this a few Ostrea, Turritellce, and Flustrce were found, but so friable as to fall to pieces when handled. 2. Next comes a stratum varying from 2 to 8 feet, consisting of

THE word "development," as used in connection with .mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. But, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character f development that is considered in this paper. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar, system of mining. practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development"' as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its "value" should be determined -by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation.

The emission of firedamp from the strata surrounding active workings of longwall coal faces normally follows a cyclic pattern associated with the mining operations being carried out on the face. Mining a coal seam disturbs the uniform distribution of overburden weight such that the working is enveloped by a region of high stress, both above and below the seam, advancing with the coal face. There is a decrease in stress as the strata is relaxed following the passage of the face (1). The paper describes experimental results obtained during the initial investigations of a study intended to examine the permeability of samples of coal measure strata under various triaxial stress conditions. Several investigators have studied the effect of stress on the permeability of rock, usually in the field of oil reservoir engineering. Two general lines of approach are evident. One used by among others Fatt and Davies (2), McLatchie et a1 (31, Brace et al (4) and Gunther (5) was to subject a rock sample to hydrostatic pressure. Gas or water would be passed through a sealed core mounted inside a high pressure hydraulic bomb. The second approach, favoured by Wilhelmi and Somerton (6) and also by Gray et a1 (7) was to employ a so-called 'triaxial' state of stress. Here radial confining pressure and axial stress are applied independently. The permeability is measured in the direction of the axial load. With the exception of Gunther who tested coals and Brace et a1 who tested a granite, the rocks used have been sandstones with permeabilities generally appreciably higher than British coal measure rocks.

THE first year to which the Revenue Act of 1936 has applied is now passed. It is appropriate to try to give some calm thought to the plan of Federal income taxation as now imposed and what it will mean to the business and industry of the country if this plan of taxation is continued unchanged. Whether or not we like to pay these taxes is beside the point. Taxes are high and may be expected to be high for many years. The important question is whether the taxes to be imposed will destroy or injure business enterprise and development, and, in so doing, lower the standards of employment, living, comfort, and welfare of our people. The power to tax is the power to destroy. That destruction may come suddenly as a cyclone, or slowly as dry rot. What, if any, features are there in the present plan of Federal income taxation that have these destructive tendencies? A few of the points follow that seem to call for consideration.

The classes of ore deposits in the mountain province of Colorado that have been the most productive in the past and that offer the greatest promise for the future are: (1) disseminated or stockwork molybdenum deposits associated with Tertiary stocks; (2) combination precious- and base-metal veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks; and (3) base-metal replacement deposits and veins in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Veins in Precambrian rocks, including precious metal-bearing sulfide veins, gold-silver telluride veins, and tungsten veins, have been mined extensively in the past, but their aggregate output has been far subordinate to that of the groups named above, and the outlook for major output from them in the future is poor. Principal ore deposits of south-central Wyoming are sedimentary iron ores of Precambrian age and uranium deposits in Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Precambrian deposits of several kinds are scattered through the mountains of both states. The most promising of these, based on present indications, are vanadiferous titaniferous magnetite in southern Wyoming and southwestern Colorado and thorium-niobium rare-earth deposits associated with alkalic intrusive complexes in Colorado. Most of the mining districts of Colorado are in the Colorado mineral belt, a generally narrow but somewhat irregular belt that extends northeastward across the north-trending mountain ranges and the north-northwest trending geologic grain of the state. The belt is characterized by intrusive rocks of Laramide and younger age and by ore deposits, and it occupies environments ranging from Precambrian crystalline rocks through Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks to Tertiary volcanic rocks. Two ages of intrusion and ore deposition recently have been recognized in the mineral belt. One is Laramide (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary), and the other is Oligocene. As interpreted herein, the major replacement deposits and most of the sulfide vein deposits in Precambrian and sedimentary rocks are Laramide in age, and the molybdenum deposits, the tungsten and the gold telluride veins in Precambrian rocks, and the precious- and base-metal veins in volcanic rocks are Oligocene in age. In general, the Laramide deposits are mesothermal in aspect, and the Oligocene deposits are principally epithermal. The existence of two mineralization stages, in considerable part characterized by different suites of metals, has many applications in exploration.

It has also appeared that the behavior of the zinc cell is the best and surest check on the correctness and thoroughness of the purification methods used, because it indicates the presence of both current impurities and cumulative impurities derived from the leaching of the ore; it also indicates whether these impurities are current or cumulative, at least in so far as they are of serious importance commercially.

THE large-scale manufacture and use of uranium in conjunction with the atomic energy development during the war led to a need for knowing the equilibrium diagrams of uranium with various other metals. The alloys of uranium with aluminum and with iron were among the first that were studied for this purpose. Much of the work was done in the manner of a survey since it was necessary to determine the important features of the phase diagrams rather than to obtain completely detailed results. For this reason no attempt was made to locate exactly such features as liquidus lines, solid solubility limits and compound and eutectic compositions. It is believed, however, that there are no great inaccuracies in the diagrams reported here and that no important points were overlooked. Earlier work on alloys of uranium with aluminum and iron is almost nonexistent and in each case is considered to have been of little value by M. Hansen. It is interesting to note, however, that the compound UAl3 was first reported in 1902 by L. Guillet. Experimental Procedure Materials: The uranium used for making most of the aluminum alloys was obtained from material prepared by Metal Hydrides, Inc., and melted in vacuum at M.I.T. Because of the lack of an adequate supply of metal, it was necessary to use material from several different batches and hence it is impossible to state an exact analysis. However, a few results indicated about 0.01 to 0.03 pct iron and probably about 0.03 to 0.05 pct carbon. Toward the end of the work a small amount of metal was obtained from Brown University and from Iowa State College and this was used in determining the transformations in pure metal and in some dilute alloys. All of the aluminum used in this investigation came from a supply of high purity metal (greater than 99.9 pct aluminum) which was obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Mehl of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The uranium used for making the alloys with iron was produced by the bomb reduction process which has been described by J. Chipman.² This metal, after vacuum melting, contained about 99.9 pct uranium by weight with carbon and iron as the chief impurities. Electrolytic iron containing about 0.012 pct carbon, 0.020 pct nickel and 0.009 pct copper was used in making the melts. Melting Equipment: The melting of the alloys went through a stage of development which culminated in the use of beryllia or beryllia-lined crucibles and in the use of high frequency heating in either vacuum or in an atmosphere of argon. It was found that uranium at a few hundred degrees above its melting point would pick up aluminum and to a lesser extent silicon from an alundum thimble while aluminum above 1000°C would extract silicon from the impure alundum. No reaction of either metal with beryllia was noted at temperatures as high as 1800°C. The distillation of aluminum from the aluminum-rich alloys was quite troublesome at temperatures above about 1300°C and was only partially avoided by the use of argon instead of vacuum. The small domestic underfeed stoker as now designed is unusually sensitive to the coking and plastic properties of coals, and when the attempt is made to burn the high rank coking and caking coals of the Appalachian fields, serious trouble may occur. Part of the trouble may be caused by the ash content and clinkering characteristics of the particular coal in use, but more often it is the result of an excessive ac-in of coke in the form of ''trees,, or masses in the fuel bed. Often the zone of burning becomes so restricted that the fire goes out, and in extreme cases the fire may be lifted completely out of the fuel bed and away from the air ports. Even if the fire is preserved, excessive coking may cause response to subsequent heat demand to be slow and irregular. Coke trees seem to grow most readily during periods of hold-fire operation, so that in order to preserve the fire in mild weather it is often necessary to set the timer for such a long operating period each hour that much unneeded and unwanted heat is developed, causing discomfort. During demand periods the fire may pick up so slowly that the intense burning which develops just before stoker cut-off causes a serious overshooting of the thermostat. Stoker coal performance tests which have been made in a number of labora- tories1,2,3,4,5 are one method of approach to the problem Of selecting stoker coals- As yet these tests have not been standardized and they are expensive and time-consuming. The value of the results probably increases with the length of the test. Sherman and co-workers at Battelle Memorial Institute believe that even a one-week test is not too reliable a trial2 and it is quite likely that Others will agree. A great advantage of such tests is that characteristics of coals, other than the tendency to form coke masses, may be evaluated from them. The selection of stoker coals would be greatly facilitated if there existed some simp1e measure Of the tendency Of a a to form coke in a fuel bed. Although possessing all Of the disadvantages Of any small-scale laboratory test, the test for the free-swelling index of coal has been found useful for evaluating the probable effects Of swelling properties upon combustion.7 Ostborg, Limbacherand Sherman, have shown that the test can Predict, roughly, the tendency Of coke to accumulate in the fuel bed Of a domestic stoker. They also gave instances of its value in predicting combustion behavior in some large installations. The use of the test for free-swelling index has become well established and has been adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials.8 When domestic stoker coal investigations began at the State Mine Experiment Station in the summer of 1944, it was decided

Subsequent to extensive laboratory testing, a pilot plant was constructed to further evaluate the process for high temperature copper cementation on iron in continuous operation. The plant was designed to produce 1 to 10 tons of copper a day depending on the copper concentration of the pregnant solution. The energy required to operate the plant was very low as virtually all the solution heating requirements were supplied by the exothermic cementation reaction. The results demonstrated that this, process has potential for commercial application with respect to operating considerations, and yields a copper product in excess of 95% copper at high reaction rates, low iron consumption, and at least 98% copper recovery from solution.

With the exception of the Vancouver Island coal, all the western coal-fields owe their present development to the completion, in the autumn of 1886, of the Canadian Pacific railroad. While it could not be expected that a very great deal could be accomplished in three years, enough has been done to pretty thoroughly establish the coal-bearing areas and their correspondence with those which have been developed to the south of the boundary along the lines of the transatlantic railroads in the United States. This summer I visited some of the important developments in the coal areas of Washington Territory, largely with the object of being better able to appreciate the corresponding coal-bearing areas in British Columbia to the north. In Western Canada, coal-bearing rocks have been found in three zones: 1. In the plains to the east of the Rocky Mountains and in the eastern flanking ranges, the coal occurs in the Cretaceous formation (including the Laramie). 2. In the interior plateau of British Columbia, the coal is found in the Tertiary formation. 3. On the coast of British Columbia, Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are found carrying coal, and on the Island of Vancouver the well known Nanaimo coal has been worked for years in the first named formation. In all of these zones, the coals vary from lignites up to higher grades, the factor determining quality being the amount of pressute to which they have been subjected. The intensity of this pressure is generally shown by the disturbance which the coals exhibit, and, in many cases, is almost directly in proportion to the distance of the deposits from mountain ranges. This seems to be also the opinion expressed by Mr. Bailey Willis in connection with his Census Report on the coals of Washington. It has been elsewhere stated

LARGEST of any hoist installation ever manufactured in Canada is that being erected at No. 5 shaft, Creighton mine, of the Inter- national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. It is a bicylindrical conical- drum hoist with the drums arranged in tandem, and driven by two direct- current motors through single reduction gearing. This hoist was designed by the Canadian Allis-Chalmers, Limited and manufactured at their works in Lachine, Quebec.

'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author's quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should he defined as the distance between an F line and a y line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and y lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. x between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling. It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz." This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any consideration would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material.
