THE point to be made most clear in this paper is the economic value of flotation in the Benguet mill flow sheet. It is rather a statement of effect with no attempt at a technical explanation of the cause. Certain well-known, easily understood reagents, mechanisms and principles have been adapted to the conditions at Benguet, and have proved to be more successful than was demonstrated in the laboratory. The mechanical and metallurgical development of this particular operation was arrived at by trial and error, with fortunately very little error. Changes were slow, of necessity, which in the end proved a blessing in that time was afforded for observation and analysis of the disturbing factors; and as a result each change was a definite step towards higher efficiency. Many of these steps were unpredictable from labora-tory work because of the varied and differing characteristics of ores met with in daily operation of the mill, which were practically impossible to reproduce on a laboratory scale. The Benguet mill receives daily ores that differ as much as if they were delivered from three different properties. There is first the surface and upper-level zone, which produces an oxidized secondary ore contain-ing considerable iron oxide, manganese oxide and some organic matter. Formerly, most of this ore consisted of very soft fill with some hard rock mixed in. It also contained an unusual amount of iron and aluminum sulfate, which formed hydrates upon entering the alkaline cyanide solu-tion and caused excessive frothing. When flotation was introduced in the Benguet mill the general char-acteristics of this upper-level ore had changed considerably, in that it was practically all newly mined, fairly hard ore. It still contained many of the same disturbing elements, but was somewhat simpler to treat than formerly. The small proportion of fines is still troublesome in flotation, and plant practice probably does not show more than 80 per cent extraction on this small portion of the ore. The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer. Data about production are practically non-existent before 1860. The Census of 1840 reported a small amount, and a number of small mines were opened in the forties, all of the coal being used locally, or hauled to consumers in wagons. Tonnages shown in Table 72 are estimated from those for which authority is given. Railroads reported coal tonnages carried in the state in 1878 and subsequent years for years ending June 30th;, it is not stated that the tonnage originated in the state. Considering this fact, and the considerable amounts used locally, the tonnages given in Table 72 are certainly not larger than the actual amounts produced.

ORGANIZATION of The Federated American Engineering Societies was effected at the organizing conference of national, local, state and regional engineering and allied technical organizations at the Cosmos Club, Washington, D. C., June 3 and 4. Thus is brought into being the greatest national engineering society in the world. The object of the organization is to further the interests of the public through the use of technical knowledge and engineering experience, and to consider and act upon matters common to engineering and allied technical professions. Prominent engineers from all parts of the country, representing more than 75 engineering societies, with an aggregate membership of more than 125,000, participated in the organization. The constitution as adopted by the conference, calls for the creation of s managing body to be known as the American Engineering Council, and its executive board. The belief was expressed that the entire organization would come to be spoken of as the American Engineering Council. The council is to coordinate the activities of state councils and of local affiliations whenever these activities are of national or general importance or may affect the general interests of engineers. Representation in the council is to be according to membership of the component societies.

The activation energy required to break a pinned dislocation line away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms is calculated as a .function of applied stress, without neglecting line tension. Reasows are presented for not assuming the effect of line tension to be negligible when considering the problem of freeing a small segment of dislocation from an impurity atmosphere. The dislocation is considered to he pinned at each atomic size along its length and the pinning points are assumzed immobile. The development is a refinement of the origznal cottrell-bilby1 theory. The solution is compared to recent approximations developed by cottrell3 and Haasen5 in which line tension con- IN 1949 Cottrell and bilby1 considered the problem of determining the force required to pull a dislocation away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms. They also examined the effect of thermal fluctuations on this force. The dislocation line was pictured as bowing out in a triangular loop under the action of an applied stress, and the activation energy necessary to free the dislocation from its atmosphere was calculated as a function of stress, line energy, and dislocation-solute atom interaction. siderations were neglected. A qualitative explanation of the yielding process in terms of the activation of Frank-Read sources is presented, but the lack of a realistic solution to the dynamic dislocation problem involved prevents an extension of the model at present. A self-consistent correlation between the present calculations and experimental data for delay time associated with yielding and the temperature dependence of the upper yield stress was made. Favorable agreement was noted. It is concluded that extension of the original Cottrell-~ilby' theory which includes line tension effects can just as well describe the yielding process as other approximations3,5 which neglect line tension. Cottrell and Bilby found the form of the activation energy vs stress curves to be almost independent of the line energy and the interaction energy (i.e., these parameters only affected the activation energy U by a scale factor). A check of the theory was accomplished by comparison with the experimental data of McAdam and Mebs2 for the lower yield stress as a function of temperature. cottrell,3 in 1957, attempted to obtain a simple closed-form solution for the activation energy as a function of stress by linearizing the quartic equation relating displacement of the dislocation line and applied stress. THAT Illinois is an important mineral producing state is well known. A value of over $237,000,000 for the mineral products in 1926 indicates the magnitude of the industries. Coal mining is the largest mineral industry, and the value of its product was about 63 per cent of the total mineral production of the state. Oil and gas constituted about 8 per cent and the non-metallic minerals about 29 per cent. This 29 per cent represents the production of a varied group of mineral industries of wide geographic distribution through the state.

An analysis oj a series of samples of single -crystal silicon grown on sapphire shows that ,four distinct orientation relations exist. There are at least thirteen crystallographic planes which serve as substrates ,for epitaxial growth The model which assumes that silicon substitutes for aluminium and bonds with the oxygen atoms of the sapphire to form the first later for subsequent growth can account for the epitaxial geometry in all four cases. Multiplici-ties 01 specific orientations are found which are explained by the symmetry of both the sapphire and silicon crystal structures. It was reported in the previous paper' that single-crystal silicon films can be deposited on single-crystal a A1,03 (sapphire) with a wide variety of orientations. The silicon films, however, were found to deposit in only four different orientation relationships with respect to the sapphire substrate. The X-ray data have been analyzed to determine the plane and direction of atomic fit and an atomic model to account for the epitaxial relationships at the silicon-sapphire interface has been developed. These results are described in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL The Laue X-ray data described in the previous paper were reduced to stereographic projections in a standard manner. These data were supplemented with X-ray reflection data obtained with -& E and A Full-Circle Goniometer (Electronics and Alloys, Inc.) mounted on a Phillips diffractometer unit. The silicon films were thin enough to result in characteristic reflections from the substrate as well as the silicon. The superimposed stereographic projections were analyzed to determine the orientation relationships. Ambiguities were resolved by referring to constructed models of various lattice planes for both silicon and sapphire. These lattice models were also used to develop the model for atom fit at the interface. DATA AND ANALYSIS 1) Crystal Structures. The crystallography of silico-n, which is of the diamond cubic class with a. = 5.4~, is straightforward. The sapphire structure is more complex and generally difficult to represent in pictorial form. It is of the rhombohedra1 class but usually referred to hexagonal axes. The transformation of indices between these two systems can lead to ambiguities which will have bearing on the analysis presented herein. Therefore, the basis used in this paper is described in the appendix. Referred to the hexagonal system, the parameters of sapphire are co = 12.95.&, a, = 4.75~, c/a = 2.73. All parameters are for room temperature. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate schematically the hexagonal unit cell model of sapphire used for this analysis. The oxygen atoms are assumed to occupy positions in an idealized hexagonal array on basal planes. Their actual positions are in a slightly distorted hexagonal array. The aluminum-atom positions are scaled to their actual positions in the lattice with respect to the basal layers of oxygen atoms. It was found that an idealized model where the aluminum atoms are assumed to lie exactly at the octahedral interstices of the oxygen lattice, similar to that used by ~ronberg,' was not adequate for this study.

A discussion of the paper of W. F. Wheeler, presented at the Toronto Meeting, July, 1907 (Trans., xxxviii., 621 to 632). A. BEMENT, Chicago, Ill. (communication to the Secretary*):¬Formerly it was the general practice of engineers to designate coal that is free from moisture and ash as " combustible,", not-withstanding that it contains oxygen and nitrogen. The origin of this practice was more particularly due to the requirements in connection with boiler-testing, which demanded a consideration of that portion of the fuel which took part in the combustion-process because results based on a unit of either moist or dry coal were not comparable, since both moisture and ash were recognized as variable quantities. Thus, a pound of " combustible " became a standard of value, and was treated as a constant before employing measurements of heating-power and calculating therefrom the percentage of efficiency. The recognition of this term ." combustible" was an advance to be credited to the engineer .rather than to the chemist, because the latter, not having to do with the interpretation of analysis in practice outside the laboratory, usually saw no reason for reporting results in terms other than those of the moist-coal composition. Some years ago I needed a table of fuel-composition in terms of moist, dry, moisture-free and ash-free coal, and of the combustible components. This table required the use of the word combustible in its proper sense, for the purpose of designating carbon, hydrogen, and sulphur, instead of including these three elements with oxygen and nitrogen, to which aggregate the term combustible was formerly applied. To make such a tabulation involved either the use of the inconvenient and cumbersome term, "ash and moisture-free coal," or of some other representative term, and for this purpose I adopted the expression " pure coal," which is short, simple, convenient, and technically correct. (con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. IT has been suggested that boron in steel may form a film entirely around the austenite grain and that this film is responsible for the boron hardenability effect. In this connection, it is of interest to examine some of the ramifications of the concentration range of boron usually employed in hardenable steels, namely 0.0005 to 0.003 pct in a grain size range of ASTM grain size No. 1 through No. 10. The ratio of the iron to boron atoms and the number of unit cells of y iron per boron atom are listed in Table I. Even at the highest concentration considered, there are 1600 unit cells of y iron per boron atom, assuming a uniform distribution of boron. To investigate the possibility of the boron film formation, the number of boron atoms required to cover the grain surface completely must be calculated. With some transition elements, boron crystallizes in sheets composed of equilateral hexagons very much like graphite.' The selected value for the length of a side is 1.80Å. A simple calculation shows that two boron atoms cover an area of 8.4x l0 -16 sq cm. Table II lists the number of atoms of boron required for the formation of the monatomic film and Table III lists the number of boron atoms per grain. The hypothetical cases of 100 pct and 10 pct adsorption are calculated (all boron atoms in a grain and 10 pct of all boron atoms in a grain are located at the grain surface respectively). In Table 111, all combinations of grain size and composition below and to the left of the solid line (100 pct adsorption) and the dashed line (10 pct adsorption) are excluded as to the possibility of covering the grain surface with a continuous boron film. Thus, even for 100 pct adsorption, the smaller grains can form the film only at the higher concentrations. For the best case, grain size No. 1 and 0.0030 pct B, the required degree of adsorption is 3.9 pct. The above calculations deal only with the number of boron atoms required to form a monatomic film and do not take into account the mechanism of concentration of boron at the grain surface and the possible limitations to the extent of this concentration at a constant temperature, as for example in the austenitizing process. The question next arises as to how this surface concentration can occur during an isothermal treatment. Such surface enrichment of boron must occur through the phenomenon of surface adsorption, i.e., the concentration of solute atoms in solid solution in the vicinity of the surface without precipitation. A solute atom will tend to concentrate at the grain boundary if it reduces the interfacial tension. The possibility of adsorption effects involving both boron and carbon in iron has been discussed.' Today one of the main articles of diet for the mechanized army is oil and gasoline, and the chief and most efficient source of 'apply overland is the pipe line. It was a flexible 4-in. pipe line that supplied the voracious appetite of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and planes across the North African desert. and it is the 1800-mile pipe line from Calcutta to Kunming, Yunnan Province in China, the longest in the world, that supplied oil and 100-octane gas for the trucks, tanks, Jeeps, and planes fighting on the Assam-Burma-China front in recent months. In the states east of the Mississippi River, oil field operations were generally restricted during 1927. Active drilling was chiefly confined to the flood district of Bradford, and to the new areas in western Kentucky, Michigan, and southwestern Indiana. In spite of the general depression, production increased in every state, except Illinois. This unexpected increase is. due to several factors. First, in 1926 there was little flush production outside of Illinois, and the decline 'curves in all states are exceedingly flat. Second, the floods in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and Allegany County, New York, proceeded normally and increased production in those states for the fourth consecutive year. Third, new pools in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan gave important flush production. Fourth, the general unsatisfactory market forced the operators to scrutinize carefully all their operations and improve efficiency and production in all possible ways. Increases amounted to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. Illinois lost, 900,000 bbl., leaving a net gain for the states east of the Mississippi River amounting to 1,100,000 bbl., or a total 40,268,000 barrels. Pennsylvania and New York In northern Pennsylvania and southern New York, the principal activity centered in the districts where flooding is being used to increase the recovery from the old districts. Once started, the flood cannot be shut off. The producer must drill wells and take his oil on schedule, or irrevocably lose it. Accordingly, in face of an adverse market Bradford and Bolivar operations increased 24 per cent. This area furnished more than 40 per cent. of the oil wells completed east of the Mississippi River last year, although the average initial production was less than 2.5 bbl. Unlike all normal fields, this production increases for several months until water appears in the well. For this reason, these wells will produce much more oil than would appear probable from the statement of initial production. During the year, air or gas pressure was applied to several new properties. Surplus gas is rarely available and air has been more commonly used. [Introduction The critical surface tension of wetting of hydrophobic materials has been investigated extensively by Zisman et al. (1973) and relates the spreading of a liquid on a solid to the surface tension of this liquid. Thus, the Zisman ap¬proach shows that a plot of Cos 0 versus ?LV where, 0 is the contact angle and ?LV is the surface tension of that liquid in contact with its own vapor at equilibrium, produces a straight line which can be extrapolated to Cos 0 = 1. The intercept corresponds to a given ?LV, termed the critical surface tension of wetting. In instances, however, Cos 0 - ?LV plots show deviations from linearity. Alternative approaches have also included the plotting of adhesion tension (YLV COs 0) versus ?LV that can be interpreted in terms of critical surface tension data (Lucassen-Reynders, 1963). It has, on the other hand, been customary to correlate contact angle (0) with flotation data, although it is recognized that surface inhomogeneities and related contact angle hysteresis limit the interpretations pertaining to solid surface structures purely based on contact angle measurements. It is nonetheless true that 0 = 0, when the liquid is water, corresponds to a hydrophilic solid. Determination of ?c by contact angle measurements in conformity with the Zisman approach can encounter experimental difficulties, especially when solids are in a powder form. Following the reasoning that 0 = 0 corresponds to the hydrophilic state of a solid, froth flotation experiments can be expected to produce critical surface tension of wetting values for powders. The technique that consists of plotting recovery (% R) versus YLV data and extrapolating the linear part of the curve to % R = 0, has been described elsewhere (Yarar and Kaoma, 1984). This paper describes some of the results obtained by the extrapolation technique mentioned above, using various sulfide minerals. Experimental Materials Molybdenite (MoS2), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S), and galena (PbS) were handsorted from massive samples and ground by mortar and pestle, and the -147 Fan fraction used in experiments; sulfur (S) was a C.P. Fisher Scientific Co. product. Method One gram powder samples were conditioned for three minutes in methanol-water solutions of predetermined surface tension values and the percents recovered by flotation using a Partridge-Smith Cell (Partridge and Smith, 1972), were plotted against each ?LV value. Results and Discussion The percent recovery versus ?LV for two naturally hydrophobic solids, i.e., natural molybdenite, MoS2 and sulfur are given in Fig. 1 where it is seen that ?c for sulfur is obtained as 31.5 mNm-1 whereas for MoS2, it is 26 mNm-1. Figure 1 also shows that the new flotation technique described, for estimating ?c is in good agreement with the Zisman method. Curves obtained by the same method for the minerals Cu2S, PbS, and ZnS are given in Fig. 2, where it is seen that for Cu2S, ZnS, and PbS, the extrapolation to % R = 0 produces ?c values of 36, 39, and 49 mNm-1, respectively. CuFeS2, on the other hand, gives a curve that does not permit such an extrapolation to obtain a ?c value with certainty. Nonetheless, treatment of the powder with 8.95 X 10-5 molar Na2S solution followed by washing with distilled water prior to flotation effects the curves as shown in the insert of Fig. 2. The type of curves given in Fig. 1 appear to be typical of hydrophobic solids as can also be observed in Fig. 3. The composition of solid and minute quantities of inclusions seem to play an important role as regards the surface properties of solids as reflected by the slope of the linear part of the % R - ?LV plot and thus the value of ?c obtained by this technique. THE year just ended was the 50th anniversary of that first flight at Kittyhawk, N. C., in 1903. In this 50-year period the aviation industry made startling developments from flight distances of 120 ft-at snail's pace-to speeds of over 1300 mph and flights that circle the globe. And 1953 also was the 50th anniversary of the Utah Copper Co., the Father of our mass production porphyry copper ventures. How do developments in the mining industry stack up with the aviation industry? The mineral industry can be as proud of developments over the past 50 years as the aviation industry. Only for the developments of the mineral industry could aviation and other allied industries advance as they have. The year 1953 made its contribution to this progress, with the normal number of process and equipment developments and an abnormally high amount of activity in new plant capacity, particularly copper. Tonnages are on the increase and operating troubles are becoming more and more problems in materials handling and control. We're approaching molecular dissemination of ores with hydro and pyro methods coming to the front to take over where flotation leaves off.

By testing polycrystalline specimens from textured plates which had Previously been used to provide materials for growing single crystals, it has been possible to relate the plastic anisotropy of textured materials to the deformation behavior of single crystals. The deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on textured polycrystalline magnesium and binary Mg-Th and Mg-Li alloys. Variously oriented specimens of the textured materials were deformed in plane-strain compression and in uniaxial tension and compression. The stress-strain curves are similar in their general jorm of anisotropy and stress levels to those obtained on single crystals of the same alloys. The degree of anisotropy is lower, however, in the polycrystalline materials and correlates with the intensity of the basal texture. Yield loci for the textured materials appear reasonable in terms of the deformation mechanisms, and deviate sharply from the form predicted by the Hill analysis for aniso-tropic material. A N earlier study1 of single crystals has shown that magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium deform at room temperature primarily by basal slip, {10i2) twinning, and (1011) banding. The (10i1) banding mode is a combination of {10ll) twinning followed by (1012) twinning and basal slip within the doubly twinned material.2, 3 Magnesium with lithium can also deform by {1010)(1210) prism slip.1'4'5 Still other deformation modes have been reported for magnesium6-11 but these are considered to play a minor role in room-temperature deformation. In a polycrystalline material, plastic deformation must occur in the individual grains through the operation of one or more of the various deformation modes. Because the critical shear stress for basal slip is very low compared to the activation stresses for the other deformation modes,' basal slip accounts for much of the deformation in the polycrystalline aggregate. However, since there are only two mutually independent basal slip systems, and because five independent systems must be active for an arbitrary shape change in any material,'' modes other than basal slip must account for some of the strain. The deformation of textured magnesium, like that of other hcp metals, must be controlled by the same mechanisms observed in single crystals. In strongly textured material, the form of the anisotropy should be similar to that of single crystals, and the degree of anisotropy should depend on the intensity of the texture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The anisotropy of deformation was investigated through the use of plane-strain compression tests, as well as uniaxial tension and compression tests. Materials. Test specimens were cut from the three textured plates of magnesium which had previously been used to provide material for single crystals.' These plates, furnished by Dow Chemical Co., had been reduced about 80 pct during the process of being hot-rolled to their final 1/4-in. thicknesses. The plates had the three respective compositions, pure magnesium, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th (0.49 pct Th by spectro-graphic analysis), and Mg-4 wt pct Li (3.84 pct Li by chemical analysis). Impurities other than iron were less than 0.0005 pct Al, 0.01 pct Ca, 0.001 pct Cu, 0.0006 pct Mn, 0.001 pct Ni, 0.003 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.01 pct Zn. Iron was 0.001 pct in the pure magnesium, 0.002 pct in the Mg-0.5 pct Th, and 0.014 pct in the Mg-4 pct Li. The textures of the three plates were determined by X-ray diffraction utilizing only the reflection technique out to an angle of 50 deg from the sheet normal. The resulting basal pole figures are presented in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. Grain sizes in the plates were ASTM number 4 in the pure magnesium and number 7 in each of the alloys. Plane-Strain Compression Tests. Plane-strain compression specimens approximately $ in. thick by 4 in. wide by $ in. long were prepared for each of the three compositions. These specimens were prepared in a manner similar to that used for the single-crystal specimens of the earlier study.' All polycrystalline specimens were stress-relieved at 500°F for hr as the final step in their preparation for testing. The testing procedure was identical to that used for the single crystals, involving compression in a channel and using 2-mil Teflon film as a lubricant. The specimens were tested in six orientations of interest, these being the six combinations of the rolling, transverse, and thickness directions of the material serving as loading, extension, and constraint directions in the plane-strain compression test. Each of the six orientations was assigned a two-letter identifying code. These are combinations of the letters (thickness direction), R (rolling direction), and T (transverse direction) with the first letter signifying the loading direction and the second letter the extension direction. For example, ZR specimens were compressed in the thickness direction while extension was permitted to operate in the rolling direction of the textured material. To facilitate comparison of the present work with that of the single-crystal study1 the orientations used for single crystals are given in Table I along with the polycrystalline orientations that most nearly correspond. Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

This paper discusses the results of a study of reservoir pressures in the Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana, showing the general relation of the reservoir pressure to its subsea depth, as well as excessive reservoir pressures that have been encountered. The latter are particularly important in mud-control work, and the data show why it is necessary to use muds having a relatively high density in many of the deeper wells drilled in this area. Only a comparatively few of the wells drilled in the Gulf Coast that have encountered excessive pressures are discussed, but as far as is known those omitted fall within the range of pressure observed by the writers. Measurement of Pressures The following methods were used to determine the values of the original pressures: 1. Estimation of original pressure from subsequent pressure behavior of fields. This method is not precise, and was used only in a few of the older fields in which better methods of obtaining original pressures were not available. Only normal pressures were determined by this method. 2. Measurement of shut-in pressures soon after completion of the first producing well. With one exception, all pressures measured by this method were normal, this well having a pressure slightly higher than normal. 3. Measurements of pressure in connection with drill-stem tests. 4. Estimates from the maximum hydrostatic head of mud that failed to prevent flow from the high-pressure formations into the hole. This method is not exact, tending generally to indicate low pressures. Normal Pressures All pressure measurements available are plotted in Fig. 1, with original pressure at the water-oil contact as abscissa and subsea depth as ordinate. PETROLEUM engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not .permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, oil, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,1 "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found.

Most grouting has been done to stop water flaw in mines and for stabilizing foundations of various man-made structures, a survey of the U.S. literature reveals. Apparently Sun Manuel is one of the first mines in this country to use grout extensively underground for strengthening and stabilizing ground in drifts, shafts, and stations. A comparison with other procedures as well as details of the Sun Manuel program are covered. The employment of pressure grouting as a ground stabilizer at the San Manuel Copper Corp. mine reduces delays in both development and production, lowers costs, and makes possible safer working conditions. It specifically reduces delays in haulage operations and permits the maintenance of normal ventilation. In development work this grouting allows faster excavation by cementing together highly fractured or broken ground that otherwise would require extensive cribbing or spiling. In drift repair, it consolidates the loose or fractured rock over the timber or steel drift supports, thus decreasing the frequency of repair, lessening the hazards from falling rock, and curtailing delays due to blockage of drifts by muckpiles and repair operations. Pressure grouting is the process of pumping an accurately controlled mixture of cement and water into loose, fractured, or porous rock. The ratio of water to cement varies according to the nature of the rock encountered, from the thinnest mixture of 30 gal of water per sack of cement, used to fill very fine fissures, to very thick grout of 5 gal of water per sack of cement, used to fill large fissures or extensive areas of loose, broken rock. The pumping pressures at San Manuel vary from about 100 to 1000 psi, depending upon the compactness of the rock, while at other mines the pressures sometimes go as high as 5000 psi. In order to grout an area in which ground water is encountered, the pumping pressure of the grout must be increased by an amount equal to the pressure of the ground water. GROUTING IN DEVELOPMENT WORK The areas under development at San Manuel include many sections of loose, highly fractured rock. Prior to the advent of the grouting program, drifts, shafts, and stations in these areas could not be excavated without utilizing extensive support such as cribbing, spiling, and breast boarding. This slowed down the development work and increased the costs considerably over that required for excavating in more competent ground. Now, when a particularly bad area is contacted, the mining is temporarily stopped while the bad portion of drift or shaft is grouted. After the grouting is completed, the excavating is resumed with an approximate decrease of 50 pct in lost time and costs. Grouting in Drifts and Turnouts: The grouting procedures and patterns used in drifts and turnouts are very similar. The standard procedure for grouting such a turnout is shown in Fig. 1. After the ground is supported as well as possible with cribbing or lagging, the gaps between the back lagging and side lagging are plugged with empty cement sacks or additional timber, if necessary. The ground surrounding the proposed turnout is then grouted in two stages. In the first stage, the broken and caved rock is drilled and grouted to a depth of 5 to 10 ft, depending on the depth of the broken rock. This stage forms a grouted seal that allows higher pressures to be used at depths beyond 10 ft without developing excessive leaks at the face. After a grout hole is drilled, a 10-ft long pipe is wedged tightly into it with empty cement sacks. Grout is then pumped into the hole until the pressure reaches 200 to 300 psi, and the pipe is subsequently removed if it hasn't become cemented in. No more than one hole at a time is drilled and grouted because the grout has a tendency to go from one hole into another, plugging up the latter. Five or six holes are usually adequate for the first 10 ft of grouting. Experience has shown bentonite to be a useful admixture to the grout, particularly when it is indicated that the grout is being lost into large fissures or voids. Bentonite increases the plasticity of the grout enabling it to remain in place more easily until it has begun to set. In the second stage, the longer holes are drilled through the previously grouted rock, after which the

FIFTEEN thousand barrels of oil daily, the production of the United States 75 years ago, amounted to more than 90 per cent of world supply. Russia and Romania, neither of which produced as much as one thousand barrels daily, were the only other suppliers in substantial quantity. The adolescent oil industry of the United States, a dozen years old in 1871, was still confined to the Appalachian region. Wells were drilled by cable tools; many of them were "kicked down" by manpower with a spring pole; and depths were measured in hundreds rather than thousands of feet-a 1000-foot well was a deep well. Casing was an innovation, come into general use only a few years previously and still so new as to be subject to bitter patent litigation. Crude oil was packaged in wooden barrels and shipped by flat boat and barge on the creeks and rivers and by railroad. Such pipe lines as existed were only a few miles long. There were many refineries. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the Atlantic seaboard were refining centers. Refineries were very small, however, and their operations consisted essentially in simple fractionation by distillation and treating for quality. The products in demand were burning oil or kerosene and lubricating oils. Oil was not yet used as fuel and gasoline was a nuisance to the refiner.
