MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

Review of difficulties experienced in drilling directional wells in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field showed most failures of drill pipe, drill collars and casing to have been associated with excessive dog-legs. Alleviation of difficulties was approached by synthesizing theoretical and practical concepts in a planned dog-leg control program. Preventive measures necessary to control dog-leg severity and corrective measures used to reduce unacceptable doglegs are discussed. When other measures fail, deliberative measures as outlined can be employed after the probable cumulative fatigue damage to be sustained by the drill pipe has been determined. Results of a program successful in virtually eliminating problems stemming from excessive dog-legs indicate that control of dog-leg severity in directional wells is feasible and will cause no decrease in the over-all drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Prompted by an increasing frequency of drill pipe, drill collar and casing failures, a study of 50 directional wells representing 592,000 ft of hole, including 444,000 ft of deviated hole, drilled in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field was conducted in early 1965. A number of drill pipe washouts and six keyseating problems were recorded and a detailed review was made of 16 failures which had required fishing effort in 10 of the 50 directional wells drilled prior to June, 1965. These problem wells are exemplified by Wells G and F for which pertinent data are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Data pertaining to all of the 16 failures are summarized in Table 1. Inspection of these data shows most of the problems to have been associated with dog-legs in excess of theoretical limits suggested by Lubinski' and excessive dog-legging is indicated to have been concomitant with whipstocking in several of the problem wells. Results of the investigation agreed with those reported by Schenck2 who had concluded that problems could be expected when dog-leg severity exceeded limits proposed by Lubinski. Since Schenck had demonstrated the desirability and feasibility of drilling directional wells without excessive dog-legging, a dog-leg control program was established in June, 1965 for wells drilled in the Grand Isle Block 43 field. This paper reviews the methods by which theoretical and practical concepts were synthesized to develop a program of preventive, corrective and deliberative measures which virtually eliminated problems stemming from excessive dog-legs in directional wells. Discussion of the paper of H. M. WARREN, A. S. BIESECEKER and E. J. POWELL, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 181 to 193. R.. V. NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

THE convention which met in Washington at the call of the Joint Conference Committee was called to order at ten o'clock on Thursday morning; June 3, by Richard L. Humphrey, temporary chairman, member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, who made a brief statement of the reason for the meeting. Lieut. Col. Charles W. Kutz, Corps of Engineers, U. S. A., and Engineer Commissioner of the District of Columbia, then welcomed .the engineers composing the convention on behalf of the District of Columbia and, the Washington engineers. Although an elaborate program had been prepared on which were many well-known speakers on interesting and important topics, , it was voted to intersperse this to fill in the usual and unavoidable hiatuses in the business program of such a convention[ Calvert Townley, president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, was elected permanent chairman, and J. C. Hoyt, of Washington, was elected secretary of the convention. The following committees were appointed: Consti¬tution and by-laws, Richard L. Humphrey, chairman; resolutions, Philip N. Moore, chairman; and program, F. H. Newell, chairman. Then, Gardner S. Williams, member of the, A. S. C. E. and the Grand Rapids Engineering Society of. The method used to process washery refuse for use as a building material aggregate is described. Results of studies made in investigating this process are summarized. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with two commercial coal producers, studied the feasibility of using coal washery refuse in manufacturing lightweight aggregate for building materials. Lightweight aggregate is used in making masonry products of lower bulk density than can be produced from conventional aggregate such as sand, gravel, and crushed rock. Among the advantages of lightweight masonry are reduced deadweight loads which reduce materials cost, lower cost of construction labor, and improved thermal and sound insulation. A process for making lightweight concrete aggregate from coal-washery refuse appeared attractive because of the availability of raw material which contained sufficient fuel to carry out the processing. Vast quantities of such refuse have accumulated throughout the coal-producing areas of the U.S. Generally it is stored in unsightly piles, creating a problem of air pollution and using space that could be devoted to other purposes. Conversion of the refuse to lightweight aggregate could remedy these conditions and effectively utilize a material normally considered waste. The first part of the program was conducted in cooperation with the Truax-Traer Coal Co. to determine the feasibility of utilizing refuse from the company's coal preparation plant at Ceredo, W. Va., in manufacturing lightweight aggregate. The aggregate was to be used in making cement blocks comparable to those known in the building trades as cinder blocks. This project was completed in 1954. Based on the results of this work, the cooperator began commercial development and formed the Trulite Corp. for this purpose. A plant capable of handling 120 tpd of refuse was constructed for approximately $120,000. It began operating on June 1, 1955.' In 1959 a similar study was made, under a cooperative agreement with the Carbon Fuel Co. of Charleston, W. Va., to rrscertain the suitability of refuse from its plant for conversion to lightweight aggregate. Under this program various modifications of equipment were made, and the investigation of process variables begun in the previous project was extended. PROCESSING METHOD The formation of lightweight aggregate from coal-washery refuse js governed, in part, by the fusion characteristics of the mineral constituents of the refuse when heated above their softening temperatures. The heat required for this purpose is supplied by the combustihle matter in the refuse. Some of this combustible matter is coal with high ash content, but most of it is carbonaceous shale. Whereas the density of aggregate prepared from clay or shale depends largely on expansion, the density of aggregate made from refuse is reduced by burning out the combustible matter and, to a lesser extent, by expansion of the residue in the fuel bed. A chain-grate stoker with an updraft air system was chosen for the conversion process in preference to a downdraft sintering machine or a rotary kiln. In down-draft sintering, which operates on the overfeed burning principle, the volatile matter from the refuse would distill off without burning, resulting in inefficient combustion and interfering with proper operation of the equipment. The rotary kiln is designed primarily for processing material that lacks, or is low in, combustihle matter with the heat of reaction supplied from external sources. Washery refuse, which is relatively high in carbonaceous material, could burn at the wall of the kiln causing clinker formation with resultant decrease in throughput and increase in production cost. With an up-draft air stream on a chain or traveling-grate stoker, the volatile matter would be carried into the ignition and burning zones where the heat could be utilized more efficiently. The combustion procedure in this type of unit may be considered as consisting of four periods: 1) initial ignition of the top of the bed by furnace radiation, 2) ignition travel through the bed until the whole bed is ignited, 3) burnout of the combustible material with high air rates to fuse and expand the residue, 4) a cooling period. DISILICIDE coatings, MeSi2, on refractory metals are usually grown by a solid-state diffusion reaction similar to the parabolic oxidation of metals. Two or more silicide compounds occur in each of the binary silicon-refractory metal systems. When an adequate source of silicon is available during the coating process, the lower silicide compounds are usually not formed.1 However, during service application of the coated refractory metal, continued heating causes further diffusion and growth of the lower silicides. A study of the growth kinetics of the lower silicides in the molybdenum and tungsten binary systems with silicon was previously reported.2 The present study is concerned with the growth kinetics of Ta5Si3 and Cb5Si3, formed as conjugate layers between TaSi2/Ta and CbSi2/Cb diffusion couples, respectively. Diffusion couples consisting of disilicide-coated tantalum and columbium sheet coupons were subjected to diffusion heat treatments, cross-sectioned, and scanned by an electron-microprobe analyzer to determine the relative X-ray intensity profiles. These profiles correspond closely to concentration profiles for the constituents, and were used to identify phases and locate phase boundaries. The analysis of a single specimen after a diffusion-anneal provides only one value for the Me5Si3 phase thickness, corresponding to the time and temperature of the diffusion treatment. Consequently, each isothermal curve showing the rate of accumulation or depletion of silicide phases required several samples with identical diffusion temperatures but different diffusion times. The disilicide coatings were prepared by pyrolizing commercially pure silane in a hydrogen carrier gas. The hydrogen was purified by passage through a palladium membrane. Commercially pure tantalum and columbium sheet metal coupons, 0.005 by $ by 2 in., were used. All of the coated specimens for each system were prepared together in a single group in order to minimize coating variations among individual specimens. During pyrolysis, the brightness temperature was maintained at 1200°C. With suitable flow rates at this temperature, only the disilicides of tantalum and columbium were formed in detectable amounts. Coated specimens were subjected to diffusion an-neals in a tube furnace with automatic proportional control within ±10°C. A H2-Ar mixture, deoxidized and dried over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate, was used to prevent oxidation during the diffusion anneal. Diffusion couples were cross-sectioned, polished and examined with an A.R.L. electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer. Both metal constituents in each specimen were simultaneously scanned using a 1-p beam spot size and either 1- or 2-µ steps. Analyses were performed using the Ka radiation of columbium and silicon, and the La, radiation of tantalum. For all specimens, an acceleration voltage of 30 kv was used, and integration was made against the specimen current. LiF and A DP monochrometers were used to isolate characteristic radiations. Three or more traverses were made on each specimen. The intensity scales were adjusted using the constituent metals and standard samples of the silicide compounds which had been verified by X-ray diffraction. The relative intensity profiles were used directly, in conjunction with the standard samples, to identify compounds and phase boundaries. The stoichiometries differ considerably between the silicide compounds in both systems, and the homogeneity range for these silicide compounds is narrow. These characteristics result in marked differences in relative intensities of the fluorescing elements—differences which permit ready identification of phases and phase boundaries. Assuming that rock behavior, during cutting with a single diamond, may be approximated by that of a rigid, Coulomb, plastic material, a theory of single diamond cutting action has been developed. Using this theory, the stresses on the diamond cutting surface and the components of the cutting force have been determined. Theoretical results agree reasonably well with available experimental data. The theory of cutting of single diamonds may be used as the basis for subsequent study of the perfonnance of surface set diamond drill bits and other surface set diamond cutting tools. INTRODUCTION For more than twenty years, surface set diamond bits have been used successfully in the mining and petroleum industries to drill and core rock formations that range from medium hard to the hardest known formations. Most extremely hard rock formations cannot be economically drilled or cored by any other means. In view of the growing use and importance of surface set diamond drill bits, it is reasonable to study the way in which these tools cut, and the factors that influence wear of the diamonds. Such knowledge will contribute to better bit design and will improve operating procedures. To analyze the cutting performance of these tools it is appropriate to consider the way in which an individual diamond cuts. Once this is established, the over-all performance of the bits can be determined by considering the total effect of the individual diamonds. In recent years there has been a growing interest in rock mechanics and there now exist several publications dealing with the deformation and failure of rocks. Notable experimental work has been reported by Bredthauer,1 Handin and Hager,2, 3 and Gnirk and Cheatham.4 An extensive collection of data pertaining to rock properties at low confining pressures has been given by Wuerker.5 Cheatham and Gnirk have recently presented an excellent review of the state of knowledge regarding analytical and experimental rock deformation and failure.6 Generally rocks are extremely weak in uniaxial tension, and weak or only moderately strong in uniaxial compression. Both tensile failure and compressive failure are generally brittle in nature. This means that there is little or no deformation or "flow" of the material before shear or tensile fracture occurs. Thus, until fracture occurs, rock behaves very nearly like an elastic material in uniaxial stress. Significant changes in behavior of rock occur under conditions of triaxial compressive stress. There is generally a marked increase in compressive strength and in ductility. It has been demonstrated that the failure becomes plastic (in a macroscopic sense) at sufficiently high values of confining pressure. Sharp wedge chisel indentation studies conducted by Gnirk and Cheatham indicate that many rocks behave in a plastic manner at relatively low triaxial compressive stress states.4 If "failure" under triaxial compressive conditions is considered to be either complete rupture or macroscopic plastic flow, then the general failure characteristics of a rock can be reasonably well represented by the commonly known Mohr envelope. This certainly is not a perfect failure criterion (since the effect of the intermediate principal stress is neglected) but it has been found to be adequate for most engineering purposes. Mohr envelopes usually are constructed graphically using experimental triaxial test data. For purposes of analysis it is convenient to represent the envelope in equation form. Among the several approximate forms appearing in the literature, a parabolic form is suggested by Cheatham,7 and an exponential form is suggested by Paone and Tandanand.8 The exponential form has been adopted for this study, and based on published data, appropriate parameters have been established for 19 rock types. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,[1] little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district.

There has been much written on ball-mills, but no small amount of the literature is simply the expression of individual opinion without sufficient data. This is no doubt due to the complexity and obscurity of the phenomena involved. The outstanding paper is by E. W. Davis,I superintendent, School of Mines Experiment Station, University of Minnesota, which is based on a large amount of data from careful experiments with full-size apparatus, together with some mathematical philosophy. The entire philosophy is summed up in the equations given; but the present writers question the foundation upon which this philosophy is based. Encouraged by the work of Davis, the authors of this paper continued work they had been doing along this line. At first, photographs were taken of the ends of rods in a small laboratory rod mill. The mill was tilted slightly toward the feed end and the discharge end was removed. The rods remained in the mill long enough to permit good observation and good photography. Later, a mill 24 in. inside the stepped lining was constructed. It consisted of two sheets of plate glass, 1/2 in. apart, set in a cast-iron ring. It was driven by a variable speed motor and was connected to an accurate speedometer (magneto and voltmeter type). In place of balls or rods, cast brass disks were used. These were 3/8 in. thick and varied in diameter from 2 in. down to 3/4 in. Four small projections on each side prevented the disks sticking to the glass when water was used; sometimes steel balls % in. in diameter were added to the load of disks. There was also constructed a 6-in. mill with corrugated linoleum lining and containing a dry load of various sizes of steel balls. The mills were so connected to the motor that the small mill made two revolutions to one of the large mill. Concrete is a complex, multicomponent mass whose stability is dependent on three principal variables: quality of the mix, its composition, and environment of the site. The aggregate is only one component, but its constituent minerals may react in unfavorable regimes and, given sufficient time, destroy the concrete. Therefore, besides ensuring that a concrete will meet the strength requirements of a structure, the concrete engineer must be confident that the mortar and aggregates will resist destructive processes. This paper reviews the principal causes and effects of aggregate instability, notes reactions of certain phases, and suggests precautionary measures that can be taken to extend the useful life of concrete structures.

I. Introduction. This cavern was discovered Oct. 32,1904, by Mr. Charles 8. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3,1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanging map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. 11. Location. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier station, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier station, which is also a hotel of the railway company. Figs. 3, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Zinc is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd1 first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (-v phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Voge12 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 60" C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140" C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270" C. Sander and Meissner decidedly modified the limits of the -y phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,s utilizing dynamic hard-ness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400" to 500" C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5 * Metallurgical Division, Aluminum Research Laboratories. 1 E. The susceptibility of quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy to embritt2ement during irradiation has been examined for a number of solution temperatures and aging times. Material quenched from temperatures approximately 40°C below the transus has high tensile ductility, and this ductility is insensitive to aging at 500°C or to irradiation. If, however, the material is quenched from temperatures above the transus it becomes highly susceptible to loss of ductility either from aging at 500 or from irradiation. Inter granular failure is characteristic of the materials having low ductility. The distribution of the equilibrium phase is found to control the susceptibility to embrittlement by restricting 6 grain growth during heat treatment and thus influencing crack propagation. IN zirconium, as in titanium, -stabilizing alloy additions are used to obtain high strengths via quench and age heat treatments, and the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy has been developed1 because of its strength advantage over the Zircaloys. Early in the development of the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy the problem of 13 embrittlement was appreciated, and for this reason the solution temperature was chosen below the p transus.' In the course of irradiation studies on quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy it was found' that irradiation introduced an important aspect of p embrittlement, riz., material quenched from the phase and aged 24 hr at 500°C was severely embrittled by moderate doses of neutron irradiation. This effect had not been studied in titanium alloys. In titanium the metallurgical features leading to 0 ernbrittlement were found to be structures with: a) coarse a platelets at the grain bondaries, b) finely dispersed a uniformly distributed throughout the (0) matrix,6 c) Widmanstatten a-13 with more than 50 pct P, d) the presence of some metastable p transformation products,3 and e) large prior -phase grain size.5 Alternatively, the presence of a uniform distribution of coarse a was conducive to high ductility and a structure largely of equiaxed a was very dctile. The detailed mechanisms of the embrittlement have not been worked out for all of these conditions, although weakness at either a-matrix boundaries or prior p grain boundaries have been prominent in the eculation. It was proposed that acicular a might act as a mild notch, and low ductility has been associated with easy fracture along its boundary.' There have been two opposing suggestions for the source of the high ductility associated with equiaxed a phase. JaffeeB proposed that this a would accept a large por- tion of the oxygen, thus increasing the ductility of the matrix, whereas after study of a Zr-Nb-Cu alloy Weinstein and oltz proposed that the a phase, softer than the martensitic matrix, acted to blunt cracks formed in the matrix. In the present work we have studied the effect of neutron irradiation on the ductility, particularly the P embrittlement, of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. By a variation of solution temperature and aging time a variety of metallurgical conditions have been examined, and a range of resultant ductilities obtained. The ductility has been related to the material microstructure and mode of fracture. EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used in the present work came from two separate ingots fabricated into rod of 3/8 or i in. diam, Table I. For both batches the P transus temperature was approximately 890° C. Most of the heat treatments were done directly on lengths of the j} in. diam rod, after which the tensile test specimens were machined. Quenching was achieved by dropping rods from a dynamic vacuum into water, the cooling rate estimated to be 2 100°C per sec. For aging the rods were encapsulated in evacuated silica tubes. Round tensile test specimens, with gage diam and length 0.160 and 1.0 in., respectively, were used throughout and pulled at room temperature or 300°C on Instron tensile machines, at a crosshead speed of 0.05 ipm. Specimens were irradiated in the NRX and NRU reactors, in facilities described in previous publications.'0 The metallurgical conditions examined have been: All tensile test specimens were machined with axes in the axial direction of the swaged rod. "THERE is nothing new under the sun." All over the world, mineral-dressing engineers are working at their problems, no two of which are alike. Each encounters equipment and process problems. Many devise simple ways and means of overcoming their difficulties. Many of these problems are quite common in the industry, yet, since no one human being seems capable of thinking of everything, these problems at some plants often are looked upon as necessary evils. The purpose of this symposium is to gather together, from competent engineers, devices and practices that have been useful to them. Most of the ideas contributed are not new, yet there is no plant operator, old timer or youngster, who will not find some idea herein that will give him a suggestion for improving his operation. Space does not permit a complete elaboration on all of the contributions offered. Each item is summarized, but this will be ample for those skilled in the art of mineral dressing. A list of contributors appears at the end of the paper, and the superior number at the end of each item identifies its source. GENERAL EQUIPMENT A signal light to show that a steel bin, containing relatively fine, moist ore, is full, can be made by suspending a copper rod in the bin to a sufficient depth to ensure ample contact with the ore. One wire of a 32-volt circuit should be attached to the rod and one to the side of the bin. Sufficient current will flow to make the signal light burn. A 110-volt circuit could be used, but 32 volts ensures safety.10 Fig I shows a circular bin for crushed ore. It is a concrete structure footed on the ground, using no supporting columns. Tailing from the sink-float was used for aggregate. Cross conveyors for discharging ore are not required, nor is a tripper for filling. Segregation is minimized by drawing from different gates. An exhaust fan on top of the bin eliminates condensation due to temperature of the ore.21 A beam with an adjustable point of suspension near the center permits rigging rolls for removal in a very few minutes. This makes unnecessary the lacing of the cable through the hub bolts on one side, around the shaft on the other, and the trouble of balancing the load.8 The ratchet handle on a Symons crusher may be replaced by a drum with a cable wound on it. When the cable is pulled by a crane or hoist it causes the drum to revolve and thus screws or unscrews the bowl. Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. Both the habit plane of martensite and the orientation relationship between the matrix and martensite platelets of different habit planes have been investigated in binary titanium alloys with molybdenum, chromium, and iron. The effect of the mode of deformation on the martensite habit plane was studied. A micrograph of an exposed mar-tensite platelet is presented. IN the study of martensitic transformation in Ti-Mn alloys,' two martensite habit planes—{334), and {344)8—were reported. The {334), habit was also observed in unalloyed titanium upon transformation,' although there is disagreement with respect to the exact indices. The other habit plane, {344),, has not been reported in martensitic transformation in any other alloys. The present investigation was made to determine whether other binary titanium alloys with P-stabil-izing elements would exhibit a crystallography of transformation similar to that of Ti-Mn alloys. Furthermore, since martensite platelets can be induced by deformation under certain conditions, it was of interest to investigate whether the mode of deformation, compressive or tensile, would influence the formation of martensite platelets on a specific plane in an alloy system which possesses two martensite habit planes. Experimental Procedure The material used for the preparation of the binary alloys of iodide titanium with molybdenum, chromium, and iron had the following purities: 99.99 pct iodide titanium, 99.9 pct molybdenum, 99.423 pct chromium, and 99.9 pct iron. The compositions of alloys listed in this paper are in nominal weight percentage. All specimens used were prepared and treated according to the procedure described in reference 1, unless stated. For the subzero temperature treat,ment the following experimental schedule was followed. After specimens had undergone the grain-growth treatment, they were quenched into an ice-water bath and were then metallographically examined. In specimens of higher alloy content, no martensitic transformation was observed. In those in which mar-tensitic transformation did occur, only specimens in which the martensite platelets existed as fine needles in localized regions were used. All specimens were reannealed 17 hr at 1200°C, quenched into ice water. and the capsule was broken. They were held in the ice water for from 5 to 10 sec, then transferred to a liquid-argon bath. This stepped quenching procedure was found to be more efficient than direct quenching into liquid argon. In the latter case, as soon as the hot specimen was immersed in the liquid argon, a protective, insulating layer of argon gas formed, and the specimen continued to glow vividly in the bath for some time. In the study of the habit behavior of martensite produced by deformation, specimens were deformed at room temperature either by compression, tension, or rolling. Martensite habit planes were determined by the two-surface analysis procedure described in reference 1. A stereographic net of 153/4 in. diam was used throughout the investigation. The method for determining the orlentation relationship between martensite and the matrix follows that used by Greninger and Troiano.' HE high vapor pressures of metals such as lead, calcium, lithium, bismuth, and magnesium at steel-making temperatures present experimental problems which have thus far rendered it almost impossible to obtain really reliable data for their solubilities in liquid iron. Many investigators have attempted to equilibrate liquid iron in the same crucible with the undissolved liquid phase of such volatile metals. The published results,l-6 although useful, are often questionable on the grounds of not being obtained under true equilibrium conditions. Such information is not always of practical value in any case since the equilibrium vapor pressure is often several atmospheres and steel is not currently made at these pressures. Solubility measurements at lower partial pressures (< 1 atm) appeared to be more practical and easier to make. These data could be used to calculate solubilities at other pressures where Henry&apos;s Law is obeyed, and to estimate solubilities under other conditions of temperature and pressure with useful accuracy. This note outlines the development of a general technique for the measurement of solubilities in systems of this kind. The method involves equilibration of the high-boiling metal at known temperatures with the vapors of a low-boiling metal at known partial pressures. Analyses of quenched samples provide vapor pressure-solubility data and make calculations of alloy thermodynamics possible. The principle involved is similar to the closed-system diffusion-transport method which is difficult to apply with most high-melting liquid metals like iron, due to closure problems. A two-zone horizontal (molybdenum wire element) tube furnace, Fig. 1, provides two constant-temperature zones in a reaction tuve (3/4 in. ID by 1 in. OD by 36 in.). A high-boiling metal sample, 9, introduced in the higher-temperature zone, is maintained at temperature T1, and a volatile metal sample, 7, in the lower-temperature zone, is held at T2. A stream of argon with 10 pct hydrogen is passed via flowmeters, 1, and mixing-drying towers, 2 and 3. through the reaction tube at a favorable flowrate and acts as a carrier gas which entrains vapor from the volatile liquid metal at a specific constant partial pressure. The gas mixture passes through a system of constrictions, 6 and 8, to the higher-temperature zone, establishes intimate contact with the high-boiling liquid sample, 9, and exits through a small condenser tube. The entire system is at (nearly) atmospheric pressure and the volume of carrier gas passed is measured with a wet gas meter. When the high-boiling sample attains equilibrium with the vapor phase, both samples are removed and quenched. Analysis of the high-boiling sample for solute content reveals its solubility for the low-boiling metal at a vapor pressure calculated from carrier-gas volume and either a) weight loss of volatile metal or 6) weight gain of high-boiling sample plus condenser (which collects the undissolved vapors). To test the capabilities of the method, liquid silver at 1403&apos;C was equilibrated with lead vapor at various partial pressures. The relatively simple Pb-Ag system was particularly suitable for uncovering experimental problems and providing the first step toward investigations with more volatile metals and more difficult combinations.

The mining of the Triassic coals of the Richmond basin has been carried on, upon a larger or smaller scale, for more than a hundred years. Notwithstanding the close proximity of the field to a large city and to tide-water, assuring both a good home-market and cheap transportation, and notwithstanding the good quality of the fuel and the great thickness of the principal bed developed and worked, operations in this field have been conducted with but limited success. The basin comprises about 189 square miles, being from 24 to 31½ miles in length by 5½ to 10 miles in width. Not much more than one-tenth of this area has been explored in a practical and efficient way, and not over 1200 acres have been worked near and along the outcrops or edges of the coal. The practical mistakes which have been committed undoubtedly in a number of the mine-operations of the past, do not alone explain the unsatisfactory success and progress of the industry of this field ; nor can it be ascribed to the lack of local enterprise. Other reasons have to be looked for; and, as a principal one, the irregularity and the faulted conditions of the coal deposits must be pointed out. As a second cause, the indifference of the State government, which leaves the development of the field entirely to private enterprise, instead of aiding it by systematical and practical geological investigations, deserves to be mentioned.
