RECENTLY Chen and Machlin' proposed a mechanism for intercrystalline cracking in metals during high-temperature stressing. According to this mechanism the formation of voids at grain boundaries is primarily responsible for intercrystalline cracking. A model has been provided to demonstrate the initiation of submicroscopic cracks and voids at jogs of grain boundaries where grain boundary sliding is inhibited. Submicroscopic cracks can grow as a result of either further grain boundary sliding or localized tensile stress. In the former case, it is believed that grain boundary sliding produces more voids which link together to produce macroscopic cracks and which may lead to the eventual failure of the metal. Concurrently, Nield and Quarrell2 reported their interesting results obtained in a systematic investigation of intercrystalline cracking in two aluminum alloys under various creep conditions. Their observations are generally in agreement with the above mechanism, especially the conclusion that voids are formed as a direct consequence of grain boundary sliding. On the basis of the volume fraction occupied by voids, they could find no confirmation of vacancy condensation as the mechanism for void growth. Furthermore, an important feature of intercrystalline cracking has been likewise pointed out by them that the majority of cracks are not formed at grain corners. Nield and Quarrel1 meanwhile emphasized the importance of grain boundary migration by designating it as one of two main processes operative in the mechanism of crack formation during creep. The designation seems unnecessary because overemphasis of grain boundary migration only complicates the mechanism of void formation. There are two reasons which militate against the inclusion of grain boundary migration in the mechanism of void formation. In the first place, the formation of intercrystalline voids per se does not require grain boundary migration. Secondly, in addition to grain boundary migration, void formation may be minimized by any other process such as plastic deformation which is capable of relieving localized stresses around jogs. Chang and Grant3 have shown that intercrystalline cracking is prevented in aluminum by lattice bending in high stress regions. The influential role played by grain boundary migration in creep has also been realized in our studies. In several cases, voids did not appear at all in grain boundaries whenever grain boundary migration took place prominently during creep. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effect of grain boundary migration on the formation of intercrystalline voids and other related rupture properties. Experimental evidence indicates that in an unstable grain structure void formation may be markedly modified by structural changes. The abnormally high ductility and the transcrystalline mode of fracture observed in copper at elevated temperatures reveals that effective grain boundary migration minimizes void formation. Grain boundary migration has long been known as a common high-temperature phenomenon in metals with the grain configuration in a nonequilibrium state. Its effect on ductility and mode of fracture has not been recognized until recently.4 Since the introduction of the term "Equicohesive Temperature," the conventional belief has been that below the equicohesive temperature the ductility of metals increases moderately with decreasing temperature until the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of fracture is reached. In this temperature range, metals fracture in a ductile mode with a "cup-and-cone" fracture surface. Above the equicohesive temperature, ductility remains invariably low and decreases slightly with increasing temperature. The mode of fracture is strictly brittle and intercrystalline. Typical examples have been shown for a brass and copper in Fig. 1 and 9, respectively, in the paper by Greenwood, Miller, and Suiter.5 The observation in the upper temperature range that ductility of metals is low and insensitive to temperature may be explained in terms of void formation at grain boundaries. It is also in accordance with the findings of McLean6 and Fazen, Sherby, and Dorn7

In Tasmania a tailrace tunnel to handle water discharged from a turbine generator has been successfully driven by a machine tunneling method similar to that described in the July 1962 issue of Civil Engineering. The Hydro-Electric Commission, Tasmania, is constructing a high- head (2750 ft) power project that will utilize the storage in the Great Lake (1,150,000 acre-ft) at an elevation of 3380 ft. The underground power station will house six vertical shaft turbo-generators, each rated at 50,000 kw. The tailrace tunnel, 16 ft diam and 14,600 ft long, was driven through a reasonably homogeneous hard mudstone. It was decided to excavate this mechanically in the hope of saving some money on excavation and a considerable sum on the ultimate lining of the tunnel. Mechanical engineers from Tasmania worked with the firm of James S. Robbins and Associates of Seattle, Wash., which designed and supplied the "mole."

With the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, the direction of the main concentration of effort of the United States was changed. In order to win the war, all industrial efforts had to be organized and centralized. With the war won and peace in sight, this centralization of effort stopped and the full play of individual initiative was allowed to resume its sway in the community. During this period of reversal of direction of effort, there was a natural loss of momentum and the United States, as well as the rest of the world, is in for a period of readjustment. The immense progress that was made in one direction under the stress of the necessities of war, which focused the energies of a nation in one direction, is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished if a community with many varying interests can be united on one objective which it desires to attain. The realization that the fusing of many interests into one stream of effort is difficult should not prevent us from taking the long view ahead that is necessary in order to be able to measure the progress made. If we don't have a mountain peak to guide us, we are very likely to run in circles in the plain without reaching the goal to which we strive. The most efficient development of natural resources is an ideal that, from a material point of view, appeals to the engineer. This ideal includes giving of opportunities to everyone to take a share in the development of these resources.. It also contemplates rewarding foresight

Until a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrpfluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acid-proof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment. Tantalum in Electrolysis It has been known for some time that certain substances permit the passage of an alternating current in one direction more readily than in the other. The effect of thorium and zinc variations on the strength and 100-hr creep characteristics of Mg-Th-Zn-Zr alloys was investigated. Optimum resistance to creep at 650° and 700°F are attainable within a certain range of thorium and zinc contents. This range does not conform to that which develops maximum tensile properties. RAPID advances have been made during the last few years in the development of magnesium alloys for elevated temperature applications demanding high resistance to creep. The beneficial effect of rare-earth metals on the creep resistance of magnesium alloys has been emphasized by a number of publications1-13 and such alloys are now in commercial production. The use of thorium as an alloying ingredient in magnesium was mentioned by McDonald and also in two Alien Property Custodian patent applications.10,17 The initial observation of Sauerwald that thorium contributes still higher creep resistance to magnesium than is attainable with rare-earth metals has recently been substantiated.'" " In fact, it has been demonstrated that the useful temperature range of magnesium alloys is appreciably extended by the use of thorium. In all cases, it was observed that zirconium must be included in the alloys in order to render them fine grained and more readily castable. Several recent publications:2-27 indicate that a still further improvement in creep resistance and a further extension of the useful temperature range can be realized by the addition of zinc to alloys. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the results of a comprehensive study of the effect of zinc on the strength and creep characteristics of Mg-Th-Zr alloys. Compositions covering the range of thorium content from M to 6 pct and zinc content from 0 to 5 pct have been investigated. The creep characteristics at 650" and 700°F reported in this paper are based on results of tests of 100-hr duration. It is appreciated that creep tests of 100-hr duration might not yield adequate data for design purposes for parts with much longer expected life. However, for the purposes of the present discussion, it is felt that the combination of stresses and temperatures used in the 100-hr creep tests have yielded a clear representation of the compositional variation of creep resistance at the temperatures investigated. Creep tests of 1000-hr duration are now in progress on a few of the most promising alloys. Preparation and Testing of Alloys The alloys studied in this intensive investigation were prepared in 25 lb capacity mild steel crucibles. The thorium, zinc, and zirconium were alloyed and poured as described in earlier publications The thorium was introduced into the melt in the form of a Mg-Th hardener," the zinc added in the metallic form, and the zirconium alloyed in the form of the commercial hardener containing magnesium and 30 to 50 pct Zr.10, 26 Fluxing practices for melting and refining were the same as for magnesium-rare-earth metal-zirconium alloys. The melts were sampled for analytical determinations and poured into separately cast 1/2 in. diameter standard tensile bars. The test bars were given a precipitation treatment of 16 hr at 600°F in laboratory furnaces. It has been shown by other tests that a high temperature solution treatment followed by an aging treatment is unnecessary for the development of optimum properties in Mg-Th-Zn-Zr alloys. The selection of 600°F as the aging temperature was based on an attempt to achieve metallurgical stability without coalescence of the undissolved phases and the attendant loss in strength. The thorium, zinc, and zirconium contents of each melt were determined chemically. The zirconium contents are reported in two parts, "soluble" and "insoluble," referring, respectively, to the portions present in the alloy which are soluble and insoluble in dilute HCl acid. Distinction is being made between these two components of the zirconium content in the alloys because it has been found that only that portion of the zirconium content which is soluble in dilute inorganic acids affects the structure and properties of the alloys. The usual impurities consisting of copper, iron, manganese, and nickel were determined spectroscopically. The analysis for each melt is listed in Table I. I DESIRE to put on record a fact in relation to the effect of manganese on pig iron which I have never seen in print, and which may, perhaps, not have been observed by anyone except myself. In 1875, while experimenting on the production of ferromanganese in a blast furnace, I had burdened the furnace with a charge which I calculated would produce a 15-per cent spiegel. The furnace was very hot, having been running for a couple of days on a very light burden, and making a burnt iron, preparatory to the experiment I proposed to make to produce a high grade of spiegel. I calculated that the charge would begin to work in the furnace in about twelve hours after it was put on. After the lapse of that time I commenced to watch the furnace carefully, but found little or no. change in the appearance of the metal, although there was a very decided change in the cinder, showing that the manganese ore had come in work. The iron was quite gray and very tough. The character of the cinder was good for a spiegel cinder, and I could not imagine where the manganese was going to, as it (lid not appear to be in either metal or cinder in anything like the quantity indicated by the charge. The next morning things were still in, the same condition. The furnace was very hot, the cinder good, and the iron very gray. I was then sorely puzzled. I had never heard of a gray iron with over 4 or 5 per cent, of manganese, and had no notion that an iron with more manganese could be gray and tough. With great difficulty a piece for chemical test was broken from a pig. Not less than a hundred blows from a heavy sledge were required to break it off I took the specimen to the shop and directed that some borings from it should be brought to the laboratory, as soon as possible, whither I myself at once repaired -to put things in readiness for a rapid manganese determination. In about half an hour the machinist came in with the iron specimen in one hand and about, a dozen blunted and broken steel drills in the other, saying that it was impossible to drill the iron. There were several little depressions in the iron, which was malleable enough to be indented by the point of the drill, but not a chip had been cut from it. ALTHOUGH considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to 11 pct aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Strauss1 gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper5 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50° temperature levels from 400° to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solubility of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Fuerstenau and Cohen have concluded from our study of single particle crushing, which had suggested that the size moduli of the crushed specimens were determined by the specific energy expended independent of feed size, that the same independence with respect to feed size exists for the specific energy-product size relationship for rod mills. They present data supporting this conclusion. Our single particle crushing experiments were on single spheres of soda-lime (type of glass was not given in our study) glass for which the feed size can truly be neglected. However, the feed size cannot be neglected in any case where the effective size modulus of the feed is not too much coarser than the size modulus of the product. This can be illustrated in the second experi- ment of Fuerstenau and Cohen where the feed is considered to be the original -6 +%mesh material. However, one can also consider the product from the 7.5-min grind to be the feed for the 10, 15, 20, 25-min grinds, and the 10-min product to be the feed for the 15, 20, 25-min grinds, etc. If the specific energy-product size moduli curves are drawn for these other feeds, as shown on Fig. 3, the new curves (and some curvature is apparent) are much steeper than the -6 +%mesh feed line. The slopes of these new curves are about -1.5, —1.8 and -3.0. This observation is in accord with the observation by Bond, who states that the net specific energy input to a grinding mill is equal to the specific energy represented by the product less the specific energy represented by the feed. As the reservoir rises behind an arch dam, it presses the arch into the canyon walls and valley floor. To compute the stresses, deflections, and arch reactions, it is necessary to know how much the rock deforms under the combined loads of gravity, temperature, and water. Under sustained loading for a period of time, the rock continues to deform or "creep" slightly, causing changes in the stresses and shape of the arch. Under reduced loading, the elastic arch tends to resume its unstrained position and it is important to know that the rock will follow it and maintain tight contact along the abutment. It is, therefore, important to know the "set" characteristic of the rock. Past attempts to define load-deformation properties of rock, including creep and set, have largely l been limited to laboratory test of intact cores and in-situ jacking test utilizing bearing plates 2 to 3 ft in diam. In both cases, a uniaxial load has been applied to a volume of rock too small to fully reflect the influence of cracks, joint systems, foliation, and other inherent weaknesses within the rock mass. This chapter describes a large radial jacking test which more nearly duplicates the action of an arch dam by penetrating the load deep into the rock mass, bringing into play more of the factors which contribute to prototype deformation. Results obtained from the large radial test are compared with those from smaller uniaxial test. Analytical expressions for the breakage rate as functions of mill charge, mill speed, particle size, ball diameter, and ball load are derived, using idealized models for probability of breakage (Gaudin and Meloy), energy distribution (Mempel), and arithmetic mean of effective ball energy (Langemanns). Computational results using the theoretical equations are compared to experiments. The equations enable simulation of ball mill grinding at different grinding conditions.

Devices for saving labor in immediate connection with the operation of the iron blast-furnace have received comparatively little attention. Machines for hoisting and blowing, always employed in some form, have been improved; but charging, tapping, casting and handling the pig-iron in the beds are still performed chiefly by manual labor. WHEN I was a boy, political economy was taught in the old fashioned New England high school that I attended. I still possess my text-book, an abridgment of one of the old classics, and, I referred to it a few days ago. It began with the definition that "political economy is the science which investigates the' nature of wealth, and the laws which govern its production, exchange and distribution." That definition of 50 years ago strikes me still as being a good one. In college I sat under Francis A. Walker, the greatest of American economists. I still have his old text-book, which begins with substantially the same definition as Fawcett, but adds that "political economy has to do with no other subject, whatever, than wealth." As so developed economics was a dry study which captivated but few. It was characterized as the dismal science. It seemed to lead nowhither. . This was perhaps due to the inadequacy of the data available to economists. Consequently, their discussions and deduc-tions were founded largely on conjecture and assump-tions. Naturally this resulted in differences in the formulation of doctrines. There were controversies respecting the nature and influences of money, over the derivation of wages, over the principles of laissez faire (letting things take their own course) over the Malthusian doctrine, and so forth. Amid all this there was one great fundamental law universally recognized, namely the law of supply and demand, which ranks with the law of gravitation and the law of the conservation of energy among the great fundamen-tal laws of nature. The law of supply and demand is the one thing in economics upon which we may fix our eyes as upon the lode star. In the course of time we have fallen out of agreement with Walker's doctrine that political economy has to do with no other subject than wealth. Although it is indeed the science of the production and distribution of wealth we can see that many things pertain to that subject and that economics links hands closely with engineering, biology, and psychology. Why should I pay $8.50 an hour for dealer repairs when my own mechanics work for $3.50?" The numbers vary, but that's the argument most contractors use to justify doing their own repairs. They don't realize it, but they're probably losing big money. For instance, it takes nearly a quarter of a million dollars in tools alone to equip a shop comparable to an average equipment dealer's facilities. A contractor must buy a lot of expensive, specialized tools he seldom uses, or else settle for the inefficiency of having repairs done by his mechanics with relatively unsophisticated tools. His building soaks up money in rent, maintenance insurance, taxes. His mechanics demand good wages. It even costs money when mechanics aren't repairing equipment. Mechanics get full wages for slack periods and cleanup time, too. This doesn't count as service manhours, but it's still part of the total repair cost. To help contractors uncover these hidden expenses and find out the true cost of owning a shop, some equipment dealers have devised a do-it-yourself "shop cost analysis form."

Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past.2-4 Removal of the char formed during ablation in reentry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling.5 The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces6 using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application.7 For the purposes of this study, thermal spalling or spallation of rocks is defined as progressive failure caused by thermal stresses induced by a sudden application of heat from a high temperature heat source. Gray observes that the size of the spall is dependent on the pattern of induced thermal stresses before failure. The spallability or the relative susceptibility of rocks to failure by thermal spalling is a complex but potentially useful parameter for qualitative comparisons. Fundamental differences exist in the degree of spallability among different types of rocks. Accurate prediction of spallability of any particular rock has so far not been possible. Measurement of the state of stress and temperature in the rock during the rapid thermal spalling process poses difficult problems that must be solved. Among the objects of interest which the members of the Institute are invited to examine in connection with this meeting is the Brown segmental wire-gun, which will be seen in process of construction at the works of the Pennsylvania Diamond Drill and Manufacturing Company, at Birdsboro. This is a 5-inch breech-loading (highpower) rifle, 19 feet long, constructed upon the system of Mr. J. H. Brown, an inventor of recognized genius in many branches of mechanical industry, and under the engineering direction of Lieutenant G. N. Whistler, Fifth U. S. Artillery. The system consists essentially of the subdivision of the inner core or tube of the gun, which takes up the initial compression, into longitudinal segments of such size that a higher physical condition and degree of special elasticity may be set up therein than it is possible to produce in the larger masses of metal heretofore used for the tube of the modern high-power cannon. The process consists in winding layers of square steel wire, subjected to a constant tension of 130,000 pounds per square inch, around these segments, which, when so held together, form the tube of the gun. A lining-tube may or may not be used. The steel segments used in the gun now under construction are 18 feet 4 inches long, and 3 inches thick at the breech, from which they taper to 0.8 inches at the muzzle. The physical condition of the segments has been determined by test-pieces, cut from each end of each segment, which show the following characteristics: Tensile strength, 165,000 pounds per square inch. Elastic limit, 105,000 pounds per square inch. Elongation at rupture, 14 per cent. in 2 inches. They are of crucible chrome steel, made by the Carpenter Steel Works, at Reading, Pa. The wire which holds them together has 0.005 square inches sectional area and is wound under a constant tension of 650 pounds on each strand, equivalent to 130,000 pounds per square inch. THE Mining Methods sessions, one of which was run jointly with the Industrial Minerals Division, were fortunate in having a number of exceptionally fine papers. At the Tuesday session R. P. Smith presented the results of six years' experience with prepaid medical care for the employees of the Hollinger mine. It was felt that this paper was a real contribution to the cross field of mining-medicine, and the presentation was exceptionally well done. Olof V. Lindqvist acquainted us with the consider- able progress made in blast-hole diamond drilling in recent times, especially in Canada. The opening of a mine is always a matter of considerable interest and the description of the procedure and problems encountered in opening the Mather mine of Cleveland Cliffs Iron was presented by L. C. Moore.

INTRODUCTION The preceding chapters have brought us to a point in the mineral appraisal process where the composited sample values can now be used to estimate the grade and tonnage of the total mineral deposit. There are many techniques whereby drill hole composites and/or other sample data are used to assign grade and estimates to the surrounding rock. Matheron and his students have properly called such techniques extension functions. Before embarking upon a detailed discussion of extension functions, it is necessary that we take time to consider the concept of geostatistics as advocated by George Matheron who developed the "Theory of Regionalized Variables," which he published in 1962 (Matheron, 1971). The concept of regionalized variables has important application in the techniques of mineral appraisal. The position or location of a mineral sample within a deposit can be almost as important as its value. Geostatistics, when defined as "the application of the theory of regionalized variables* to the study of mineralized volumes of rock," takes into consideration the position as well as the magnitude of the value of the sample. The principles of geostatistics, as outlined by Matheron, represent a major step forward in the mineral evaluation process, because they provide a sound theoretical and practical basis for quantifying the geological concepts of (1) area of influence of a sample, (2) the continuity or lack of continuity of mineralization within the ore body, and (3) the lateral changes in mineralization according to the trend direction of an ore body and its orthogonal components; or in other words, a measure of the anisotropy of the deposit. Royle (1971) has defined the objects of geostatistic as being: "1. To estimate the most likely value of blocks of ore, or the values of the whole deposit; and 2. to estimate the errors of such estimates. This latter is important as, in addition to providing a check on unwarranted optimism, it shows where more valuation work may be needed." Because of the great importance of these concepts in mineral evaluation, an introduction into the theory of regionalized variables, and the study of a practical approach to its application is outlined here. REGIONALIZED VARIABLES VS. RANDOM VARIABLES Classical statistics, as discussed in earlier chapters, grew out of the study and application of probability theory. Probability is concerned with the outcome of random events and therefore classical statistics is built upon the theory of random variables, i.e., the probability of independent events. The validity of most statistical inferences depends upon sample randomness being assured for unbiased results. Where independent events cannot be assumed the results of statistical inference becomes suspect. On the other hand, geostatistics is concerned with variables that have position in space as well as magnitude, hence the term regionalized variables. Mineral deposits are not the only field to which the theory of regionalized variables is applicable. Many natural phenomena that demonstrate a relationship between change in magnitude and position in space are amenable to application of geostatistical techniques.
