OIL quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State `A'-Vapor Blanket Cooling-In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage `B'-Vapor Transport Cooling- Termination of the `A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage `C'-Liquid Cooling--The `B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the `B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage `B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 2 ½ -in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and 1-in. stream height, and (2) a ½ -in. orifice and a 3 ½ -in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was ½ -in. above the orifice. The steel used was an NE 9450 having the following analysis: [ ] Some tests were run on an NE 8740, 3312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been omitted' from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1 1/8 -in. stock to 1-in. diam by 4 in. long.

Anthony I?. Lucas died suddenly at his home in Washington, D. C., on Sept. 2, 1921. Captain Lucas, as he was known to us, was born in Dalmatia, Austria, in 1855, of Montenegrin ancestry. He was graduated as an engineer at the Polytechnic of Grate and served in the Austrian Navy as second lieutenant. In 1879, he obtained leave of absence and visited an uncle in the United States. After an extension of this leave of absence, in order to undertake an engineering engagement in the lumber district of Michigan, where he resided, he decided to become an American citizen. He was naturalized in May, 1885. His name was Luchich, but as his uncle had adopted the name of Lucas, which was more easily pronounced by Americans, from his entrance to this country, he used this Anglo-Saxon form. Without knowing this fact, upon first meeting him a person was sometimes surprised to note the rather Germanic pronunciation of the Captain. Although he subsequently revisited Austria with Mrs. Lucas, he made his permanent home at Washington, D. C. His son served with distinction in the A. E. F. during the World War. His activities in this country as a mining engineer were at first in Colorado and later in salt mining at Petit Anse and Belle Isle, La. During his salt investigations, his attention was directed toward the possibility of oil in the Gulf Coast region and in January, 1901, his well, the "Lucas Gusher," on Spindle Top, Tex., started a new era in the oil business and his reputation as discoverer made him famous throughout the world. Captain Lucas became a member of the A. I. M. E. in 1895. During 1914, 1915, 1918, and 1919, he was chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute and was at all times prominent in Institute affairs. As to the personality of Captain Lucas, the lasting impression is of a courteous hospitable gentleman, genial, affable, obliging, and helpful with his advice br assistance to any colleague. He was sincere, honest, firm against all obstacles, backing his judgment with his own hard work along any course which he had determined to be correct. His value in the engineering world lies mainly in the petroleum industry. In the oil business all wild-catters are pioneers that deserve credit and gratitude upon their success. There are, however, names that particularly stand out in our history. Drake conquered such obstacles as ridicule, lack of finances, and started the oil business. In 1901, Captain Lucas had the conviction that Spindle Top, a dome rising about 12 ft. above the coastal prairie south of Beaumont, Tex., contained commercial oil. With the environmental movement beginning in the late 1960's came a deluge of permit requirements for the mining industry. Coal mining has been one of, if not the most, severely impacted of the mineral industries as a result of the passage of the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. Numerous provisions of this Act and numerous regulations developed under authority of the Act are being challenged in differing levels of the judicial system across the United States. Such court cases have had varied success. Numerous other regulatory programs that are not quite as dramatic as the SMCRA have presented an unending regulatory problem for mining operators. My comments in this presentation relate primarily to the major Federal and State agencies and their legal responsibilities which we in the coal mining industry must address in order to receive authority to construct and operate surface coal mines in the State of Wyoming. A list of the Federal and State agencies one could deal with in an application is as follows: 1. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). BLM is responsible for deciding where and when to lease federally owned coal and for establishing terms and conditions for leases. BLM also has some control over surface reclamation on federal land, i.e. regrading to eliminate highwalls, covering of spoils, maximum extraction of coal to limit future disturbance, contemporaneous reclamation, etc. BLM is also responsible for designation of federal lands unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining operations. 2. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS coal mining responsibilities apply only to Federal and Indian lands and concern compliance with production requirements including diligent development, minimum production levels, royalty payments and resource protection, and

During the past three or four years, the fabricators of silicon-bronze alloys have endeavored to induce users of phosphor bronze to use instead the silicon-bronze alloys, claiming that the silicon bronzes are superior to the phosphor bronzes for switches and springs, or where high fatigue resistance is desired. This paper gives the results of tests comparing several phosphor bronzes with a 3 per cent silicon bronze and a copper-nickel-tin alloy (Adnic), all processed by the Scovill Manufacturing Co. So far as the authors are aware, sheet-metal fatigue tests have not been made on any of the alloys included in this report, except on one phosphor bronze, material C, Table 1, which was tested by Townsend and Greenall1. Endurance Limit The majority of fatigue tests are designed to determine the endurance limit of a material. The number of repetitions of stress that will serve to establish an endurance limit varies with different materials. For ferrous materials, H. F. Moore2 has shown that stresses that do not cause failure up to 10,000,000 stress cycles will not cause failure up to 100,000,000 (and sometimes to 1,000,000,000) cycles. Thus an endurance limit for ferrous materials can be determined with a minimum of 10,000,000 stress cycles. For nonferrous materials, no such generalization holds. R. R. Moore3 has shown that for manganese bronze and elektron metal, 13,000,000 and 28,000,000 cycles, respectively, will serve to determine an endurance limit, while certain duralumin specimens gave no indications of having reached an endurance limit up to 400,000,000 stress cycles. J. B. Johnson6 showed that an endurance limit for duralumin was not found by tests running up to 500,000,000 cycles. H. F. Moore2

Subsidence, although it may or may not be apparent on the surface, is an inevitable consequence of deep coal mining and a frequent cause of damage to surface structures. Efforts to prevent subsidence go back many years, but there is still only one known antidote that is both technically feasible and predictable. This is the hydraulic or pneumatic stowing of solids-or flushing. In coal mines, however, flushing has been rarely used because it is considered the most expensive method of filling such mines, even though the reverse is true for ore mines. It is thus significant that the method has found favor in a comprehensive program the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has undertaken to eliminate the hazards of abandoned coal mines within its jurisdiction. In "Operation Backfill," as the program is known, the Commonwealth has successfully used hydraulic flushing and fully justified the method economically.

IN THE death of Professor Hofman who was born on Aug. 13, 1852 and died on April 28, 1924, the world has lost a great metallurgist and a great author of metallurgical literature. Measured in time his life was not quite seventy-two years, but measured in work accomplished it was much longer than this. It is not surprising that Dr. Hofman became a great scholar for his father, Karl Hofman, was on the faculty of Heidelberg University, and his early days were spent in these surroundings. He studied in the University under such men as Kirchoff and Bunsen and often spoke of the intimate relations he had with them. Following his course at Heidelberg, he studied at the Clausthal Mining Academy where he graduated with honors, receiving the degrees of Mining Engineer and Metallurgical Engineer in 1877.

This chapter deals with those sands employed by the foundries for the manufacture of cores and molds used in the casting of such common metals as steel, gray iron, ductile iron, aluminum-based alloys, and copper-based alloys. Most metal is cast in "green sand" molds in which the sand mixture, consisting primarily of silica, clay, and water, forms a plastic material. This plastic material is rammed around a pattern in a split box called a flask, then the box is separated, the pattern is withdrawn, and the metal poured. These green sand molds are broken apart when the metal has solidified. The sand is then remixed and a new mold made for the next casting. To a lesser extent silica sand is mixed with resins or oils and, after forming, the mixture is hardened either by heat or chemical reaction. In any case, the foundry mold or core is used just once before being broken up and remixed for manufacturing another core or mold. By far the greatest consumption in the foundry is of those types of sand high in silica, low in clay (under 0.5%) and occurring in numerous locations thoughout the United States.

Molten silver is equilibrated with silicon nitride at 1400°C in nitrogen + hydrogen gas mixtures, and from the solubility data the activity coefficient of silicon is found to be 1.76 at silicon concentrations below 1 pct. Using this value, and that available from the silicon cmbide solubility measurements, together with those derived from the phase equilibrium diagvam, the activities of silver and silicon are estimated for the entire composition range. The main feature of the activity data is that there is a pronounced positive deviation from ideality. The activity of silver in molten silver containing up to 5 pct Si was determined by Schadel, Derge, and Birchenall1 by measuring the vapor pressure of pure silver and of the alloy over a temperature range of 850º to 1050°C. They deduced from their results that there is a positive deviation from Raoult's law and that the activity coefficient of silver increases with decreasing temperature. However, as pointed out by Kubaschewski and Catterall,2 their activity coefficients are much too high, giving silver activities greater than unity. At a later date McCabe and Birchenal13 showed that the previous vapor pressure data on silver4 were high by a factor of about 1.3; presumably a similar error must have occurred with the vapor pressure measurements on the Ag-Si alloys. The activities of silicon and silver calculated by tager' from the phase diagram and by Gibbs-Duhem integration, respectively, show a positive deviation from Raoult's law for silicon activity and positive and negative deviations for the silver activity. According to these computations, at infinite dilution of silicon ygi = 1.12 at 1420°C. d'Entremont and chipman6 measured the solubility of silicon carbide in molten silver at unit carbon activity; the equilibrium silicon content is found to be Nsi = 0.017 ± 0.002 atom fraction for 1420°C. Using the data of Grieveson and Alcock7 for the free energy of formation of silicon carbide from pure silicon and graphite, the activity of silicon for unit activity of carbon and of silicon carbide is asi = 0.0308 at 1420°c; therefore for the above solubility data on silver, YSi = 1.81, which is somewhat higher than that given by Hager. Use is often made of silver alloys in the measurements of activities of solutes in metals where silver has a very low solubility; in fact, Ag-Si and Ag-A1 alloys have been used in the past for such purposes. In an attempt to gain more thermodynamic data on molten Ag-Si alloys, measurements have been made in the present study on the solubility of silicon nitride in molten silver; the results on these solubilities are given in this paper together with a detailed discussion of activities of silver and silicon. SOLUBILITY OF SILICON NITRIDE The standard free energy of formation of silicon nitride is known with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. According to the measurements made by Hincke and Brantle8 and by Pehlke and Elliott,' the following are the free energy data for the standard states of solid Si3N4, liquid silicon, and Nz at 1 atm pressure:

In the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more cornponents that tend to form very stable oxides. Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others. In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken. If, however, it is required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible. since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides. For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets. All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measuremerits and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve. From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material. Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties. Nature and Removal of Surface Barriers The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes.* In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 Per cent Fe, So Per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200°C. or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics. However. this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable. In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen. Without doubt, one of the most frequent and serious ani~oyailces connected with the practical running of a blast-furnace, especially in single-furnace plants, is caused by low steam, in spite of the fact that all boilers at blast-furnaces have grates for burning coal, and that coal is more or less continuously burned upon them, from three to a dozen men being pretty constantly engaged around the boilers as firemen or coal- and ash-handlers. At times, when the furnace is " tight," all available men arc put on to assist the regular firemen; yet sufficient steam cannot be got to keep the engines up to their regular number of revolutions, while the stoves, deprived of the gas which has been sent to the boilers, run cold, so that, when the furnace loosens up and resumes the regular rate of driving, the blast is very considerably below normal temperature, and a "cold," or at best a " high-sulphnr," cast is the result. Again, it often happens that a furnace, running at its best, becomes temporarily a little too hot: the pressure rises; the amount of gas made is diminished; the steam soon commences to go down; and a small scaffold is likely to form before the furnace has been brought back to the proper rate of driving, and thus enabled to take its regular amount of blast. The usual remedy is either to "jerk" the furnace by a sudden, brief intermission in blowing, or to cool the furnace by lowering the heat of the blast; but if the lower blast-temperature be maintained too long, the hearth and descending stock may be cooled below the " critical temperature" mentioned by Mr. Johnson,' and the furnace may go to the other extreme, and become cold. This is especially the case when coal or coke high in sulphur is used.

The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table I), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term "potash" originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first U.S. patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 20.4 million short tons K2O produced in the world in 1970 (Eilertsen, 1971 ) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K,O, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1 .O% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K,O) . Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and meta- morphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such de- posits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of sea-water or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in [Table 1]. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971).

PREVIOUS to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, i.e., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, i.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was pre-determined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into "grades suitable for brash was that of redistillation.

A computer program was written to predict the phase behavior generated by the enriched-gas-drive process. This program is based, in part, on a new concept of convergence pressme, which is then used to select vapor - liquid equilibrium ratios (K-factors) for performing a series of flash calculations. The results of these calculations are the equilibrium vapor and liquid phase compositions which define the phase envelopes. The program was used to predict phase envelopes for 11 different hydrocarbon systems on which published experimental data were available. The predicted and experimental results compare favorably. INTRODUCTION The reservoir engineer is frequently faced with the problem of predicting what will happen if gas is injected into a reservoir. One aspect of this, general problem is predicting the phase changes that will occur when a non-equilibrium gas displaces a reservoir fluid. In particular, a "dry" gas, upon displacing a volatile oil, will pick up intermediate components from the oil. On the other hand, a "wet" gas, containing a high concentration of intermediates, will lose some of these components to a relatively low-gravity, non-eouilibrium1- crude. It is this latter Drocess. occurring in the enriched-gas displacement, which is treated in this paper. In the past, these phase changes have been determined experimentally and the results incorporated into various modifications of the Buckley-Leverett analysis.112 Such experimental work is time consuming, and the results are sensitive to numerous experimental errors. With the wide availability of high-speed digital computing equipment and numerous correlations pertaining to the vapor-liquid equilibria of hydrocarbon systems, it is now practical to calculate such phase behavior. This paper describes a computer program for performing these calculations. THE ENRICHED GAS DISPLACEMENT PROCESS Experimental results have shown that oil recovery can be significantly increased by enriching the displacing gas with intermediate hydrocarbon c0m~onents.3 The essential features of the phase behavior generated by this enriched-gas-drive process are commonly illustrated with ternary diagrams such as Fig. 1.4 In this figure, Gas D, which contains a high concentration of intermediate hydrocarbons with respect to the undersaturated Crude A, is injected into the reservoir. When D contacts A, gas goes into solution until the oil becomes saturated (Point. B). Further contacting of Gas D and saturated Oil B results in a Mixture C which separates into Vapor Y(c) and Liquid X(c). Liquid X(c) is contacted by additional Gas O, resulting in Mixture E which separates into Vapor Y(e) and Liquid X(e). Repeated contacts of the liquid by the injected gas will eventually result in Liquid X(4 of maximum enrichment existing in equilibrium with Gas Y(d). The equilibrium tie-line X(4 Y(4, when extended, passes through the Point D representing the enriched injection gas. For systems of more than three components, the predicted equilibrium states are dependent upon not only reservoir temperature and pressure, but also the compositions of the crude oil and injected gas. If the gas is sufficiently enriched, a miscible displacement is generated. Line If is tangent to the phas,e envelope at the critical point (Point Z) and represents the limiting slope of the tie-lines as the critical state is approached. Point 1 therefore represents the minimum enrichment of injection gas required to generate a miscible displacement. Point G represents the minimum enrichment required for initial miscibility of the injection gas with Crude A. DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. The history of Niagara Falls, as currently told, is simple, and by that very simplicity it has been rendered plausible. AS the story runs, the Falls were once situated at Lewiston, 7 miles to the north of their present site; and, since all the rocks in this section are alternate hard and soft strata, the waters acting readily upon the soft shales caused their removal, and the overlying hard lagers, deprived of support, broke down under the weight of the large volume of water that rushed over them; and this erosive action has sent the edge of the fall more and more southward, until it now has excavated the seven-mile gorge between Lewiston and the village of Niagara Falls. (See Fig. 1.) As early as 1790" we find this theory advanced in a description of this region; and it has been practically endorsed by subsequent observers, the most prominent of whom was Prof. James Hall, the State Geologist of New York, who surveyed the Falls in 1841, and gave the most exact description of their surroundings in the publications of the State Survey.? Not until 1883 was the correctness of the accepted theory of the Falls questioned.‡ The geology of the basins of the Great. Lakes, as elucidated by Newberry,§ Speneer,ll and others, has added largely to a clearer understanding of the life-history of the Falls. The investigators have shown us that Lake Erie, as a lake, is, geologically speaking, quite young; that its valley was excavated in pre-glacial times by a series of rivers; and that the Maumee, Sandusky, Cuyaboga, Alleghany and other rivers carried the drainage of the surrounding

THE relation between man-hours of labor and production may be correlated for any industry, and already it has been widely used in piece-work studies. It is not in general use as yet for recording labor efficiency of an enterprise or an industry. An exception to this is the Cement Institute, which tabulates the man-hours used in each operation and FIG. 1.-LABOR PRODUCTIVITY IN COPPER MINING. thus gets the total man-hours per barrel of cement. The writer knows of one steel company that keeps a complete record of man-hours for every operation from mining the ore to finishing the product. No doubt many others find the information useful, and such a study could be of value to the mineral industries.
