During the year 1940, production of crude oil in RiIexico totaled 43,914,000 bbl., or 2,776,000 less than in 1937, the year before expropriation. The 1940 output was I,2000,000 higher than in the previous year. In 1937, Poza Rica production accounted Declines in exports of Panuco crude, fuel oil and gasoline were recorded but these were more than offset by increased exports of 4,000,000 bbl. of Poza Rica crude, which was the approximate amount shipped to Sinclair during 1940 under the terms of the settlement. Over-all exports increased by 1,500,000 bbl. over the preceding year. The outstanding development regarding the destination of Mexican exports in 1940 was the increase of I0,000,000 bbl. in the exports to the United States. Exports to Germany ceased toward the end of '939 and to Italy in the second half of 1940. During the year 1940 the Sinclair interests and the Mexican Government settled their expropriation question. By the terms of the settlement Sinclair is to be compensated by cash payments and oil-purchase contracts. On Dec. I, 1940, Ada Camacho was inaugurated President of Mexico for a term of six years. Among his first acts following his election were: I. A proposal to change the Constitution to restore Supreme Court Judges' terms to life tenure. This has been ratified by both chambers of the Mexican congress and is now before the legislatures of the States of Mexico for ratification. The, taking away of the administration of the railroads from labor and restoration to the State.

Investigations of the Zr-Pt system, by metallography, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction, determined the phase relationshifis from 0 to 50 at. pct Pt. Phase fields in the Pt-~ich region were outlined, and three intermetallics (ZrPt, Zr2Pt, and ZrPtd were located. A eutectic between Zr and Zr2Pt, and a eutectoid veaction between Zr and a Zr + Zr2Pt, were established. The maximum solubility of Pt in P Zr was approximately 13.5 wt pct, as opposed to less than 1 wt pct solubility in a Zr. EARLIER work on the Zr-Pt system was limited to an X-ray study on the intermetallic compound, ZrPt3, by H. J. Wallbaum,1 It was reported that ZrPt3 existed at 86.52 wt pct Pt, and had a hexagonal structure, isomorphous with TiNi3. Wallbaum's data revealed the following structural particulars: a = 5.633A, c = 9.21A, and c/a = 1.635A. Other studies allied to Zr-Pt alloys concerned only 1) Pt-rich alloys (0.05 to 5.0 pct Zr) for corrosion resistance,2 2) a Zr-base alloy with 5 pct Pt and 0.124 pct C for oxidation resistance,3 and 3) electroclad-ding of Zr with Pt for in-pile corrosion resistance of Zr to uranyl sulphate. 4 Metallographic, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction techniques were applied to accurately resolve the phase relationships in the 0 to 50 at. pct (68.2 wt pct) Pt region, and to outline the phase fields in the Pt-rich area. Three intermediate phases: Zr2Pt, ZrPt, and ZrPt3, were also established by the same methods. PROCEDURE Melting stock for this program was of the highest purity obtainable. The Zr was iodide crystal bar with a low hafnium content of about 0.05 wt pct (Westinghouse "Grade 3"). The as-received Zr was treated to remove the surface film of corrosion product that resulted from a standard autoclave grade designation test. Next, the bars were processed to yield material suitable for arc melting and free of contaminants. Sheet platinum metal (Baker and Co. "Grade 2") was used for alloying additions. This material con-

IN THE December issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, attention was drawn to the February meeting of the Institute. The plans of the Committee on Arrange-ments have progressed considerably since that date, so that further announcements may now be made. The Mining Methods Committee has definitely arranged for at least three sessions. One of these will be devoted to a discussion of various methods used in sampling large low-grade ore deposits; a second will have for its leading subject underground transportation and mining practice as developed by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and the third will be devoted to the coal industry, particularly in reference to the percent-age of economic recovery under various conditions. The Mining Methods Committee will also hold a committee meeting, which will be open to all members, for the purpose of a discussion in reference to the symposium on mining methods which it proposes to hold at an early meeting. The Petroleum and Gas Committee is planning a two-day symposium. A tentative program was printed in the November number of MINING AND METALLURGY, and this, with a few changes, still indicates the plans of the committee. E. L. DeGolyer, vice-chairman of the committee, says Mining engineers and geologists should make every effort to attend the February meeting and hear the symposiums on foreign oil possibilities which have been arranged by the Petro-leum and Gas Committee of the Institute. No such comprehen-sive consideration of this subject as that planned has previously been attempted. This matter is extremely important to all persons who are users of petroleum or its products, and in our present civilization this classification includes every individual, but it is particularly important to the engineer who directs the production and use of power on a large scale. The United States produces currently about two-thirds of the world's oil but consumes more than it produces. We must look .to outside areas for part at least of our petroleum requirements and the future market, because even American oil will be influ-enced largely by the ease and freedom with which this outside supply may be secured. It is important to you to know something of foreign prospects and conditions under which they may be developed.

In the latter part of the summer of 1913 the Conservation Commission of the State of Louisiana, under presidency of M: L. Alexander, decided to stop the waste of natural gas going on at the "burning gas-well," Located about 2 mile southeast of Oil City, La. On several occasions, both in newspapers and in reports, comment had been made on the condition of this well, its harmful effect on the Caddo gas field, and the considerable loss, estimated at several thousand dollars each month, caused by the escape of the valuable fuel., But nothing had been done to bring the well under control and prevent further waste of gas until the State Conservation Commission took the matter in hand. The gas fields of Louisiana are among the greatest in the country. So far most of the gas has been found in the Caddo field proper, although considerable development has been done in and around the city of Shreveport and near the town of Mansfield in DeSoto parish. To extend the life of the gas fields and to prevent the quick exhaustion of the supply of the natural fuel are matters of vital importance for this section of the country. Four gas companies have entered the Caddo field and supply the surrounding towns and cities With gas. The Arkansas Natural Gas Co. has pipe lines to Little Rock, Ark., and supplies gas to the following cities and towns in that State: Texarkana, Hope, Garland, Emmet, Prescott, Boughton, Beirne, Gurdon, Arkadelphia, Gum Springs, Mal-vern, Dsnaldson, Gifford, Perla, Beaton, Beauxite, Mabelvale, Bryant, Sheridan, Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Argenta, Pulaski Heights, and Hot Springs. The Southwestern Gas & Electric Co. transports gas to Mooringsport, Blanchard, Caddo, Rodessa, Oil City, Vivian, Bloomburg, Hosston, Ida, Dixie, Belcher, and Shreveport. The Marshall Gas Co. supplies gas to the town of Marshall, Texas. The Louisiana Co. has a line to Shreveport. In, the oil field the gas is used for drilling purposes, and the operators either have their own gas system or buy from the gas companies. At the present time the surrounding territory depends for its fuel supply on the Caddo field, and the importance of the conservation of the natural-gas

WHEN sulfur is encountered in objectionable amounts, it is regarded as the most trouble-some element for the mine operator to control. It exists in two conditions in iron ores, as sulfide in iron pyrites and as sulfate in gypsum and barite. The sulfate radical (SO,) may also be linked to one or more of the several other elements found in the iron ore compound. The only dependable method for the de-termination of sulfur, particularly when found in the insoluble residue, has been the so-called fusion method. This is a long and tedious process involving several hours for its completion. In looking for a more rapid method which would be .applicable to all iron ores, the writer investigated the work of M. Groger1 who in 1881 showed that by heating pyrite with iron out of contact with air, the pyrite is reduced to iron sulfide and from the latter all of the sulfur will be given off as hydrogen sulfide gas on treat-ment with hydrochloric acid. FeS2 + Fe = 2 FeS FeS + 2 HCl = FeC12 + H2S In 1891 F. P. Treadwell2 not only confirmed the results of M. Groger but also found that iron powder would reduce to sulfide the sulfate radical of any substance, including barite, if not found in excessive quantities. The writer found this to be true and developed a method, in cooperation with F. J. Baker, chief chemist, mining department, of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Ishpeming, Mich., for the determination of sulfur in iron ores which is not only very rapid but also accurate. Pure iron ore powder, reduced by hydrogen, gave good results but was found to be very slow in reacting. A high silicon iron with a low sulfur content of 0.012 per cent was found to be. much more active than the pure iron and gave excellent results.

It is the purpose of this paper to show the importance of sand characteristics, when combined with other physical data, in evaluating production obtained by secondary recovery operations, and to indicate the benefits to be gained from the application of these principles to primary production. Introduction During the past 10 years there has been a growing interest within the industry regarding the movement of fluids through oil reservoirs. A number of research projects have been directed toward the development of the physical laws governing this movement. In the period 1933 to the present, correlations between laboratory analysis of cores, reservoir fluids and well performance have been established and have been applied to successful secondary water-flooding recovery operations; and to the completion, production, reconditioning and evaluation of wells in new fields. The application of these data to water-flooding, either natural or artificial, is comparatively new, but the principlcs involved were set forth in 1880 by John F. Carll,1 who said: The flooding of an oil district is generally viewed as a great calamity, yet it may be questioned whether a larger amount of oil cannot be drawn from the rocks in that way than by any other, for it is certain that all the oil can-not be drawn from the reservoir without admission of something to take its place. If one company owned all of the wells drawing upon a pool, and had accurate records of the depth and characteristics of the oil producing stratum in each well, it is quite possible that some system might be devised by which water could be let down through certain shafts, and thus the rocks be completely voided of oil and left full of water. As it is, however, no systematized plan of action can be adopted. The careless handling of one well. by which water is let down to the oil rock, may spoil several others belonging to different parties. A clashing of interests at once arises and is likely to result in disaster to the whole district. In judging of the probable effects of the intro-duction of water into any particular oil district several things are to be considered. (1st) The time of flooding—whether early in the progress of development, while yet a large percentage of oil remains unexhausted or at a later period after the supply has suffered from long continued depletion. (2nd) The structure of the rock—whether regular and homogeneous throughout, or composed of fine sand inter. bedding connected and irregular layers of gravel, sometimes lying near the top and at others near the bottom. (3rd) The shape of the area being flooded. (4th) The position of the point at which water is admitted. in relation to the location of the surrounding wells still pumping oil. (5th) The height (which governs the pressure) of the column of water obtaining admittance. (6th) The duration of the water supply. Although we may take exception to part of Carll's reasoning, particularly " and thus the rocks be completely voided of oil and left full of water," we must give him credit for pointing out the increased effectiveness of water encroachment in displacing oil from a sand and for his recording six of the present seven considerations necessary for evaluation of production of oil by water

GOLD was discovered in Gold Canyon on May 15, 1849. Following this discovery placer miners worked the gravels in the canyon for-ten years, finally discovering the outcrop of the Comstock lode at Gold Hill in May, 1859, and in Ophir ravine on June 12 of the same year. Before long large quantities of gold and silver, were taken from the lode and one of the West's most spectacular mining booms drew thousands of fortune seekers to Nevada. After a long period of production activity waned and in late years little mining was done. The recent reopening of the old mines and the discovery of ore in other parts of the vein, and in other veins of the district, has led to a revival of interest in the Comstock. Virginia City, Gold Hill, and Silver City, situated along the great vein system, are enjoying a period of prosperity and a large influx of people.

THERE has been considerable discussion among A metallurgists and others interested in the development of titanium alloys as to the nature of the fine line markings which appear in the microstruc-tures of unalloyed titanium and a titanium alloys. These markings have been variously called x phase, etching pits, and twins. Figs. 1 to 3 show typical examples of the line markings as they appear, respectively, in high purity iodide titanium, commercial purity titanium rod, and a high purity a alloy containing 0.2 pct N. The commercial purity titanium sample, shown in Fig. 2, contains both line markings and some spheroidal retained-ß phase. The ß phase seen in this micrograph should not be confused with the line marking, since it originates from the iron present as an impurity in the sponge metal. It will be noted that the line markings seem to have a definite orientation pattern with respect to the grains and in titanium noticeably resemble the precipitation occurring in artificially aged high purity Al-Cu alloys. This similarity led to the hypothesis that the line markings observed in titanium and a titanium alloys resulted from precipitation of some unknown phase. With the work of Hägg1 and McQuillan2 as background, there was little reason to suspect hydrogen of being responsible for the line markings. Hagg reported that up to 33 atomic pct H was soluble in a titanium, and McQuillan reported an a solubility of up to 8 atomic pct. Furthermore, McQuillan examined metallographically a 5.1 atomic pct H alloy quenched from 300°C and stated that the structure appeared to be a single-phase a solid solution. Line markings have been observed frequently and were first noted by Jaffee and Campbell3 in 1949. They did not observe them in vacuum-annealed titanium and a Ti-O and Ti-N alloys, but did observe them in Ti-H alloys containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 atomic pct H. They stated that it was doubtful that the markings were a second phase based on hydrogen, because 1 atomic pct was far from the accepted solid solubility of hydrogen in titanium. Finlay, Resketo, and Vordahl,4 in 1950, concluded that the markings were a true second phase as a result of observations on their etching characteristics. Anderson5 Commenting on these markings in titanium was inclined to associate them with hydrogen, but was loath to call them titanium hydride, because of the reported high solubility of hydrogen. Work at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics," done concurrently with the work described in this paper, provided information on the experiment converse to that described by Jaffee and Campbell in 1949. This work showed that the amount of line markings in unalloyed titanium could be decreased by vacuum annealing at elevated temperature. It was suggested that this was the result of removal of hydrogen; previously, the data of Jaffee and Campbell9 howed that the markings appeared when hydrogen was added. Recent work at Battelle for the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army, which is described here, now establishes the identity of the markings as a titanium hydride phase. A sample of high-purity titanium rod 1/4 in. diam, 0.009±0.001 wt pct H (0.43 atomic pct), Fig. 1, was resistance heated in a 0.05 micron vacuum for 41/2 hr at 1500°C. During the early states of heating, the pressure increased to 150 microns, indicating that gases were being evolved. After cooling in vacuum, the iodide titanium rod was analyzed for hydrogen. Vacuum-fusion analysis showed 0.0006 ±0.0003 wt pct H (0.03 atomic pct) to be present.* Metallographic examination of the vacuum-annealed rod showed only a transformed ß structure. THE technique of handling drilling muds varies somewhat, partly because of personal factors but mainly because of differences in forma-tion, the type of problems met with, and the general drilling conditions in different localities. The much greater depths to which bore holes are now carried have made necessary closer attention to and great modifications of all aspects of drilling-mud technique. Increased depth means smaller hole, smaller drill pipe, smaller clearances, higher pumping pressures, higher differen-tial pressures between shows and the mud column, less accurate control of the weight of the mud column, delayed receipt of formation data, and poorer samples. It means longer delays and greater hazards in rectifying mistakes or dealing with accidental occurrences. Equipment on a larger scale is necessary and more pains must be taken with layout. Lastly, the budget costs of raw materials have risen to high figures and economy of time and of direct monetary expenditure have come to mean much more than formerly. A mud laboratory is now part of the essential establishment of a modern oil field and to it current problems can be submitted for the most thorough investigation. The detailed chemical properties of all mate-rials purchased or quarried have to be investigated. Detailed data on the physical properties have to be ascertained and research on improve-ment of material and its most efficient use has to be carried out. In this paper we propose to discuss the main mud problems with which we have to deal in Iran, some of which are peculiar to our local conditions while others are of the general type common to all workers in this subject.

The practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i. e., heating to 750° to 800" C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was disclosed by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev~,(~)$ although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

IN many countries the lack of liquid petroleum supplies has centered interest upon the hydrogenation of coal and coal tars for the preparation of motor fuel. In the United States, hydrogenation has been of greater interest for grading up low-value petroleum fractions to the more valuable volatile fuels and for the preparation of a variety of premium products, including aviation gasolines, solvents, Diesel fuels, and lubricating oils. Chemically, the basic reason for this process is that, as shown in Table 1, the ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C ratio) in available raw materials is quite different from that characterizing the products sought.

Laboratory studies of several factors affecting measurements of relative permeability were made using the three-section plastic-covered core technique. Results show that the core assembly, properly constructed, will perform as a single unit, and that the testing technique will, under suitable conditions of pressure gradient, gas expansion, and migration of partial water saturation, permit measurement of flow characteristics not affected by technique. Wettability equilibrium is readily established in cores exhibiting strong wetting preference to water or oil when initially saturated with water. Laboratory tests must be conducted so that saturation changes represent those that occur in the reservoir. Immediate implications of saturation history are (1:) that the possibility exists of increasing the displacement efficiency of solution gas drive reservoirs over the natural process, and (2) residual gas saturations following water flooding in gas or gas condensate reservoirs will be 15 to 50 per cent pore space rather than 1 to 11 per cent as generally believed. INTRODUCTION Solutions of petroleum reservoir problems pertaining to production performance require the use of true relative permeability characteristics. 'This relationship of fluid conductivity and saturation has been obtained by reservoir engineers in four ways, namely: 1. From past gross reservoir performance and the extrapolation of this data based on experience,1,2 2. By using published fluid flow relationships obtained in laboratory studies on general type porous materials,3, 4, 5 3. By attempting a mathematical derivation of flow behavior," using some experimentally obtained characteristics of reservoir rocks, and 4. By laboratory flow tests using representative rock samples of a reservoir. The first three methods listed above have shortcomings which make their use limited or questionable. Production characteristics of only certain processes are obtained from field data and these are not available at the beginning of a reservoir's producing life, at which time they are desirable. It is fortuitous if general fluid flow characteristics obtained experimentally have accurate application to specific field problems. Also, it is felt that at this time there is not sufficient knowledge of the flow behavior of oil, water, and gas in porous materials to enable applicable analytical description of this to be made based on other measured rock characteristics. Measurement of relative permeability in the laboratory offers the only direct method subject to adequate checking for determination of flow characteristics applicable to field problems. Primarily, this paper deals with laboratory experiments to establish the effects of several factors on the measurement of relative permeability and the practical significance of this knowledge. Laboratory flow tests are essentially model studies; the gross reservoir being represented by a small rock sample. It is necessary to simulate in experiments all the factors of importance which influence flow in the reservoir, as well a.; to eliminate effects peculiar to the model studied to assure measurement of valid flow behavior. Factors which affect the measurement and behavior of fluid flow in porous materials have been studied by other investigators.3,7,8,9,10,11 This analysis is not intended to evaluate fully all factors involved, but to establish first the validity of measurements by the technique used and then study flow behavior under various conditions. The studies reported are as follows: 1. Effects of pressure gradient, 2. Effects of gas expansion in tests conducted at near atmospheric pressure, 3. Effects of migration of a partial water saturation in oil-gas-water systems, 4. Effects If wettability characteristics of the system. and 5. Effects of the fluid saturation history. Results show that the core assembly, properly constructed, will perform as a single unit, and that the testing technique will, under suitable conditions of pressure gradient, gas expansion, and migration of partial water saturation, permit measurement of flow characteristics not affected by technique. Wettability equilibrium is readily established in cores exhibiting strong wetting preference to water or oil when initially saturated with water. Laboratory tests must be conducted so that saturation changes represent those that occur in the reservoir. Immediate implications of saturation history are (1:) that the possibility exists of increasing the displacement efficiency of solution gas drive reservoirs over the natural process, and (2) residual gas saturations following water flooding in gas or gas condensate reservoirs will be 15 to 50 per cent pore space rather than 1 to 11 per cent as generally believed. INTRODUCTION Solutions of petroleum reservoir problems pertaining to production performance require the use of true relative permeability characteristics. 'This relationship of fluid conductivity and saturation has been obtained by reservoir engineers in four ways, namely: 1. From past gross reservoir performance and the extrapolation of this data based on experience,1,2 2. By using published fluid flow relationships obtained in laboratory studies on general type porous materials,3, 4, 5 3. By attempting a mathematical derivation of flow behavior," using some experimentally obtained characteristics of reservoir rocks, and 4. By laboratory flow tests using representative rock samples of a reservoir. The first three methods listed above have shortcomings which make their use limited or questionable. Production characteristics of only certain processes are obtained from field data and these are not available at the beginning of a reservoir's producing life, at which time they are desirable. It is fortuitous if general fluid flow characteristics obtained experimentally have accurate application to specific field problems. Also, it is felt that at this time there is not sufficient knowledge of the flow behavior of oil, water, and gas in porous materials to enable applicable analytical description of this to be made based on other measured rock characteristics. Measurement of relative permeability in the laboratory offers the only direct method subject to adequate checking for determination of flow characteristics applicable to field problems. Primarily, this paper deals with laboratory experiments to establish the effects of several factors on the measurement of relative permeability and the practical significance of this knowledge. Laboratory flow tests are essentially model studies; the gross reservoir being represented by a small rock sample. It is necessary to simulate in experiments all the factors of importance which influence flow in the reservoir, as well a.; to eliminate effects peculiar to the model studied to assure measurement of valid flow behavior. Factors which affect the measurement and behavior of fluid flow in porous materials have been studied by other investigators.3,7,8,9,10,11 This analysis is not intended to evaluate fully all factors involved, but to establish first the validity of measurements by the technique used and then study flow behavior under various conditions. The studies reported are as follows: 1. Effects of pressure gradient, 2. Effects of gas expansion in tests conducted at near atmospheric pressure, 3. Effects of migration of a partial water saturation in oil-gas-water systems, 4. Effects If wettability characteristics of the system. and 5. Effects of the fluid saturation history. Geological Relations. In his second report upon the Geology of Alabama, Prof. M. Tuomey calls attention to a rock occurring near Florence, in the Tennessee valley, the composition of which is as follows: Per cent. Carbonate of lime,.. .. .. ..16.41 Phosphate of lime,.. .. .. ..14.19 Peroxide of iron,.. .. .. .. .36 Quartz and other insoluble matters,. .. ..68.72 99.68 This rock was referred by Prof. Tuomey to the Carboniferous, because he found the Carboniferous limestones always resting conformably upon it, whilst both rest uncomformably upon the underlying Silurian or Devonian rocks. The recent discovery in Tennessee of phosphate-rock of this age (or approximately so) has stimulated the search in Alabama for similar rich material; but our search has been, up to this time, unrewarded by the finding in quantity of anything of better quality than the rock whose analysis is given above. It is, however, in high degree probable .that the rich phosphaterock of Tennessee will at some time be found to have its counterpart in Alabama. Materials of several kinds, containing a notable quantity of phosphoric acid, have been found in Alabama in both the Cretaceous and the Tertiary formations, and for our present purpose they may be most conveniently considered in their geological relations.

S. Mortsell and J. Svenssofi (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)—Bloecher states that the apparatus described by him should be a suitable instrument in the mineral dressing laboratories for determining the specific surface of such granular products that are generally investigated. We want to express a somewhat different opinion, as we doubt that the gas adsorption method of surface measurement really is the most suitable method in mineral dressing laboratories. It is well known that the surface area, as measured by this method, does not coincide with the surface area calculated from the size, shape, and number of particles, i.e. the superficial surface of the particles. It can be seen easily from Mr. Bloecher's own determination on ilmenite-leucoxene concentrate that the surface area measured according to this method may be several hundred times larger than the superficial surface. It is supposed that the surface of cracks, fissures, and pores within the particles also is included in the measured surface. However, this is an assumption which scarcely can be proved and certainly has not been proved. We believe that the mineral engineer could better use a method giving the superficial surface of the particles, as in most cases this surface only is of importance to him. Such is certainly the case when calculating the resistance of the fluid flow through granu- lar materials and the capillary forces of such materials, problems which are of great importance in connection with dewatering, filtration, and pelletizing'" etc. The same may also be the case when studying flotation problems, partly since the quantities of the introduced reagents usually are so small that they can only cover the most accessible surface of the particles, and partly since the molecules of at least the collecting reagents are so large that they cannot enter the smallest cracks and pores. As to the surface, which is of consequence in the application of Rittinger's law of crushing, one is inclined to believe, from theoretical reasons and from the work by Gross and Zimmerley, that the total surface here is the most important one. However, it seems as if in that case the superficial surface was as important as the total surface. Other reasons making the gas adsorption method less suitable for use in the mineral dressing laboratories are that the granular materials there very often are too coarse to be measured by this method, that the experimental technique is rather difficult, and that it takes a long time to measure the specific surface of a sample. Besides, the validity of the method must still be considered questionable. It is thus well known that with different gases one usually gets different values of the specific surface of the same sample, which values, even with such an ideal material as metal foils, can differ as much as about 50 pct.'" The continuous interest of the American Cyanamid Company in producing superior polymeric flocculants and dispersants for the mining industry has resulted in a broad, general study of the physical chemistry of mineral-polymer systems. The aim of this program has been to establish a sound theoretical basis on which practical problems could be analyzed, and which would lead to the development of new and improved flocculating and dispersing agents. This study has required the cooperative effort of physical, analytical, and polymer chemists, as well as engineers familiar with mining problems. This report summarizes the results of some of our investigations over the past two years. Further studies along these and other lines are in progress and will be reported in the near future. MEASURING FLOCCULATION IN THE LABORATORY The foremost problem in studying flocculation in the laboratory has been to establish reproducible methods of comparing and evaluating the effectiveness of various reagents. Previous workers have measured settling -rates 1,8 filtration rates2 , and sediment volumes3 . Direct observations of the floc size, or the clarity of the supernatant liquid, can also be used. AIthough these parameters are all interrelated, they do not always measure the same physical properties of the suspensions, and hence are not equally useful or reliable. Whatever the method of comparison selected. the testing procedure must be carefully defined and standardized. The results must be satisfactorily reproducible, and for practical purposes must accurately reflect the results obtained in mill use. In order to compare the data obtained in these various types of test, the physical nature of the flocculated system must be examined in some detail. In an unflocculated system, only the larger or denser particles (the "sands") settle at a useful rate. The sediment can be observed to build up from the bottom of the cylinder, while the fines remain in suspension for a long period of time. If the system is not disturbed, even the microscopic fines can be seen to classify themselves as they fall over a period of days. When a high molecular weight polymer is added to the system, the colloidal particles are tied together randomly in flocs, and the sands and fines settle together. The line of demarkation between solid and liquid phases moves downward from the top of the cylinder. The settling rate of the flocs depends on their size and on their effective density. For a given mineral sample, the larger the flocs, the faster the settling. Since the large flocs cannot pack as closely as small ones, they produce a sediment with more pore spaces, and hence of larger volume, which is easier to pump and to agitate. Although it is nearly impossible to measure individual floc sizes, it is relatively easy to determine settling rates and sediment volumes. Of these two, the settling rate is simpIer to measure, and hence generally more practical. Reproducible sediment volumes can only be obtained by allowing the solids to pack for a rather long period of time (e.g., hours to days), and although the volumes thus observed are directly related to the degree of flocculation (average floc size), it is often impractical to wait so long for the results.

The recrystallization reaction in OFHC and spectroscopically pure copper has been followed by X ray diffraction determinations of the amount of material with the cold-worked and recrystallized textures in specimens which had been given various heat treatments. The heats of activation for recrystallization are found to be: 29.9 kcal per rnol for OFHC copper and 22.4 kcal per rnol for spectroscopic copper. A reliable and speedy method for measuring the amount of recrystallized material in a piece of rolled metal, together with a new scheme for low temperature heat treatment, have made possible a determination of the activation energy for recrystallization in rolled copper. This method for studying recrystallization rates is different from others reported in the literature.' Oxygen free, high conductivity copper—OFHC copper—of purity 99.98 pct gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 29.9 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 208-245°C. Copper of purity 99.999 pct from the American Smelting & Refining Co. gave an activation energy for recrystallization of 22.4 kcal per mol with recrystallization data taken in the temperature range 43-135°C. The great change in activation energy for recrystallization as the small amount of impurity in the metal is decreased suggests that the motion of grain boundaries is conditioned by the impurities which must be concentrated in them. Thus the OFHC copper recrystallizes with an activation energy of the order of magnitude to be expected for the diffusion of the kind of impurities likely to be present. The high purity copper, on the other hand, recrystallizes with a much lower activation energy, in accord with the notion that the grain boundaries need not wait for the impurities to diffuse with them. Copper when strongly cold-rolled has a well-defined crystallite texture which can be described by saying that the [111] direction of the face- centered cubic crystals is aligned approximately in the cross-rolling direction and that faces of the form {110} lie approximately in the rolling plane. When such rolled copper is completely annealed the crystallite texture is quite different: the [loo] direction is in the cross-rolling direction and faces of the form (100) are in the rolling plane. At intermediate stages of annealing, the copper contains both textures. If a Geiger counter X ray diffraction spectrometer is set up so as to measure the intensity of the (200) Bragg reflection from the rolled surface of a piece of copper strip, this intensity increases from a very small value in the cold-worked state to a maximum as the specimen is annealed. The same would be true for (200) reflections from planes normal to the rolling or cross-rolling directions. In view of this fact, the amount of material in the copper which has recrystallized can be measured by comparing the intensities of one of these reflections just mentioned with the intensity from a similar specimen after complete annealing. In much the same way the intensity of (111) reflections from planes normal to the cross-rolling direction could be used to measure the amount of unrecrystallized material in the specimen. In the work to be described here the amounts of recrystallized and unrecrystallized material in partly annealed rolled copper specimens were determined in this way. Experimental Procedure Samples of oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper, cold-rolled 99.7 pct to 0.002 in. thickness, were subjected to heat treatments for various chosen times at four different temperatures, and high purity copper samples, cold-rolled 98.0 pct to 0.0015 in. thickness, at six different temperatures.
