Accurate ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fineness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by misuse, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to be actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

Michigan has had another record year. Its production has been maintained by the development of fields discovered in 1938. Two minor fields were listed as discoveries in 1939. These are in the southwestern part of the state, where the greatest drilling activity took place. During the year 1465 tests were completed, of which 828 were oil wells, 56 gas wells and 581 dry holes. The four southwestern counties—Allegan, Ottawa, Kent and Van Buren—had 1077 tests drilled, while nine other southwestern counties had 70 tests, making a total of 1147 for this part of the state, 78 per cent of all drilled during the year. Michigan's production of 23,400,000 bbl. during 1939, equal to an average daily production of 64,110 bbl., exceeded 1938 by 4,655,000 bbl., thus establishing another annual record, which brought the cumulative amount for the state to a little over 125,000,000 barrels. Active Oil Fields.—The Walker field, near Grand Rapids, Kent County, had a rapid development during the year. Traverse limestone production was discovered here in September 1938, and development has been rapid during 1939. At the end of the year 5500 acres have been proved by drilling. The Traverse limestone is found in Walker field at a depth of about 1810 ft. The Temple field, Clare County, was the most active in Central Michigan. Its production is from the Monroe dolomite at a depth of 3890 ft. In this field 2500 acres have been proved by 125 producing wells. Michigan's largest producer for 1939 was drilled in the Temple field, with a rated potential of 8760 bbl. per day. The Wise field, Wise township, Isabella County, discovered in 1938, had a steady and orderly development because the operators agreed on a staggered 20-acre spacing program. So far 760 acres have been proved for production from the Dundee limestone, found at 3650 feet. Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. Moore Pool.—The Moore pool, in Cleveland County, which was opened in 1935 by the Sinclair Prairie-Franklin Community No. 1 well, surprised the oil industry when the Sinclair Prairie-Marvel No. 1 well, on Apr. 1, 1936, discovered a rich body of Wilcox sand below the distillate

Although marked by numerous well-known attributes of its own, gold does not possess a kind and range of physical, chemical and geological characteristics wholly different and apart from those of other metals. Instead, it is merely one of the family of metals, with its individual and distinctive traits subordinate to the underlying family relationships and resemblances. The geologist concerned with pure science will pursue, therefore, the same general course and will examine the same broad kinds of facts and interrelations when studying the occurrence of gold as when studying that of copper or cadmium, or any other metal. But when we come to consider the use and economics of the metals, we discover that gold differs strikingly from all the others. Gold, in short, is unique, not by virtue of its inherent characteristics, but because of a peculiar and concerted psychological regard in which it is held. It will be evident, therefore, that the geologist who would deal with gold supply must give far greater weight to economic considerations than is required in his contacts with any other metal. If the geologist be called the scientist of occurrence, and the economist the scientist of use, the economic geologist stands as the necessary link between them. Perhaps it is in part because the economic geologist has made himself more familiar with the science of occurrence than with the science of use and has thus in some degree failed to bridge effectively the gap between the two fields, especially with regard to gold, that the usen1 of gold now appear to be in a state of general concern and even of alarm for the security and adequacy of future supplies. In the case of no other mineral commodity do the users, as a rule, trouble themselves greatly about the adequacy of supply except in so far as that may affect the price which they shall have to pay for the commodity. Oversupply, with resulting low price, they regard as a gift of good fortune. As to long-term undersupply, they are generally content to go ahead on faith, leaving the producer to discover as best he may the means for meeting their requirements or the inventor to find a substitute. But history has shown that for gold a different situation exists. While

The ores of the Butte district present a variety of combinations, and their treatment by concentration is an interesting study. They may be classified in general as follows: 1. Copper-silver ores, which are produced by the mines of the Anaconda group, and by the Mountain View, Colusa, Silver Bow and Parrot. The high-grade ores from these properties are roasted and then smelted; but a large proportion of the output is low-grade and siliceous, and hence requires concentration. The copper-bearing minerals are chalcocite, bornite, enargite and chalcopyrite, in varying proportions in the different mines, the gangue, which breaks readily into grains, being quartz and feldspar. 2. Silver-copper ores, of which the Gagnon vein is the largest producer. The grade of the ores from this mine is such that nine-tenths of the output requires concentration. The silver- and copper-bearing minerals of this vein are massive wurtzite, sphalerite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, tetrahedrite, enargite, tennantite and galenite, with a quartz gangue associated with feldspar and small quantities of barite and fluorite. The gangue is very hard and not at all granular. 3. Silver-ores containing a small amount of gold, embracing the product of the Alice, Magna Charta and Moulton claims, on what is known as the Rainbow lode, and that of the Lexington, Blue Bird, Nettie, Burlington and other mines. The gangue is quartz, carrying pyrite, sphalerite, galenite, tetrahedrite and argentite, with manganese in the form of rhodochrosite and rhodonite. Good results on ores of this class cannot be obtained by concentration, because large percentages of the silver-bearing minerals are disseminated through the gangue in such minute grains that even the finest practicable crushing

FIFTY-three alloys have been examined in the Fe-W and Co-W alloy systems in an attempt to verify the finding of o phases in these systems as reported by Goldschmidt.' The alloys were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. The 10-g specimens were made by powder metallurgy techniques. Very fine, high-purity powders were compressed in a double-acting die at 120,000 psi after hydrogen reduction. All compacts were then sintered for 200 hr at 950°C in a helium atmosphere. Metallographic investigation and X-ray diffraction proved this time to be sufficient to allow complete homogenization before the subsequent high-temperature anneal. Each specimen was then sealed into an evacuated silica capsule and annealed at 1400"or 1500 C (except two) for 25 hr. (The 60 pct Fe and 55 pct Co alloys taken to 1610"and 1680°C respectively were held at these temperatures for 1hr. THE development of huge production facilities and of new or improved processes for manufacturing magnesium from its raw sources has been an outstanding achievement of this war. Furthermore, at least one new method has reached a stage of pilot production that offers promise. Its potentialities seem to indicate that a reduction in cost and simplification or elimination of problems incident to the use of at least one of the present processes are quite within the realm of possibility. Although magnesium of very high purity (99.9 per cent and higher) is obtained, and the rate of recovery reasonable (60 to 70 per cent), the ferrosilicon reduction process is open to a serious objection, which at the time its use was proposed was thought to be sufficient to raise some doubts as to its success, at least on a high production basis. The temperature range at which the reaction is carried out-namely, 2100° to 2150°F.-is very close to the failure temperature of the material of which the retort is made. It is so close that for a time it was assumed it might make commercial use of the process an impossibility. However, at the time under discussion, the demand for magnesium was so great that it was felt by those who had to go ahead and produce this essential metal that the emergency warranted their taking a chance on this process. Subsequent developments have fully justified the soundness of their decision. Fortunately for the war effort, when the plants were put into operation it was discovered that although the retorts did collapse in rather short periods of time, as predicted, they could be blown back into operable shape by application of high-pressure air. This practical method of operation so relieved the situation that the problem disappeared. Nevertheless, if the process had not been successful, or the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process had not been able to keep pace with demands, our war program would have been seriously impaired. "FIRELESS COOKER" PROCESS For this reason a program was set up and assigned for the development of a new method that had been suggested to the War Production Board in 1941. It is believed justifiable in terming the method "new" for several reasons: (1) while utilizing the same (ferrosilicon) process as the Pidgeon, hence involving similar reactions, the type of retort or furnace is essentially different, (2) the method of operation, reaction temperatures, etc., differ materially, and, most important of all, (3) the problems to be overcome in making the process successful were not and could not have been anticipated by anything previously known about the Pidgeon process. INTRODUCTION - SCOPE OF DISCUSSION There has hitherto been no systematic effort to make public the available information on petroleum in South America and the object of this paper, therefore, is to broadly discuss the subject as it pertains to South America as a whole, endeavoring to collect in readable form what is known regarding individual fields. This article is not intended to exhaustively discuss individual fields, or to solve the many complicated problems regarding petroleum and natural. gas in the various republics, since those necessitate years of study and work by petroleum geologists, engineers, financiers, and drillers. Neither. can the reader expect absolute accuracy in all statements, since this is impossible at the present time. The writer has, of course, attempted to be correct in all cases, but in a review involving so many countries and extending over so many, phases of the subject, it is to be expected that some errors will have crept in.

SINCE the comprehensive paper of Moore, Beckin-sale, and Mallinson,' little consideration has been given to the mechanism of mercury stress cracking of copper-base alloys, apart from extensive work on metallurgical and fabrication variables employing mercurous nitrate as an evaluation test. However, with the phase diagrams now available and the recent considerations of interfacial tension at grain boundaries, developed by Smith,2 it appears that the elements of a detailed solution to the problem are available. The facts that require explanation are: 1—Pure copper is not embrittled by mercury, with or without an applied or residual stress. 2—Cu-Zn and other copper-base alloys, in excess of some undefined solute concentration, are embrittled provided an external or residual stress is acting; cracking is not observed in the absence of stress. 3—The path of fracture is invariably intergranu-lar. 4—Copper and copper-base alloys do not dissolve readily in mercury at room temperature.' Consideration of the Cu-Hg phase diagram% hows that, at room temperature, solution of copper in mercury is probably limited by the formation on the surface of a microscopically thin layer of inter-metallic compound, CuHg, having a very limited range of solubility which effectively restricts diffusion of copper and mercury. But, above 150°C (the highest peritectic temperature) copper solid solution is in equilibrium with a liquid Hg-Cu solution and, consequently, copper should dissolve freely in a large volume of mercury with the formation of an equilibrium dihedral angle at grain boundaries in contact with the liquid phase. Depending on the magnitude of this angle, mercury will or will not penetrate the solid phase along grain boundaries and spread over grain faces. Thus the measurement of the dihedral angle of grain boundaries in equilibrium with the liquid phase above 150°C should indicate whether copper is intrinsically resistant to embrittlement by mercury. In view of the fact that mercury is appreciably soluble in copper, it may also be anticipated that diffusion of mercury will take place at higher temperatures in the absence of the intermetallic compound and possibly at a more rapid rate along grain boundaries than through the grains, resulting in a Cu-Hg alloy of unknown properties. In the case of brass, the ternary system Cu-Zn-Hg is involved and, from the resistance of brass to general solution in mercury at room temperature, it is probable that a compound of limited solubility range also exists, similar to the binary Cu-Hg sys- tem. Also, compared with copper, a change in the dihedral angle at grain boundaries in contact with mercury may be expected to result from the addition of zinc to copper. The preceding generalizations appear to be confirmed by the following experiments. Experimental Results Oxygen-free copper wire, annealed at 700°C for 3 hr in copper foil, was immersed in mercury at 170°C, with and without an applied stress. After 24 hr immersion, specimens which were spring loaded to a nominal stress of 10,000 psi had not failed, and there was no apparent embrittlement as indicated by a 180" bend around a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the wire (0.125 in.) : General solution of the surface had taken place, indicated by a change in diameter of the wire, and the resulting structure of the surface is shown in Fig. 1. It is apparent that angles have developed at grain boundaries and examination at a high magnification indicates that the angle is in excess of 120°, completely excluding penetration of mercury. WHEN semiconducting materials are made into doped crystals by the normal freezing method,&apos; they usually exhibit doping variations along the growth axis. If a) there is no dopant diffusion in the solid, b) the dopant is distributed uniformly in the melt, and c) the distribution coefficient, k, does not vary with composition, then the doping variation along the growth axis is represented by the equation: where C is the doping level in the solid at a point where a fraction g of the original liquid has frozen, and Co is the mean concentration. When the dopant is either a singly ionized shallow donor or shallow acceptor, C also represents the carrier concentration. Even though this equation accurately describes the dcping profiles of a large number of normal freeze systems, there are several special systems for which Eq. [I] does not apply. One such system is the horizontal Bridgman method for preparing oxygen-grown GaAs crystals using quartz vessels. Several workers2"* have shown that GaAs crystals grown by the horizontal Bridglnan method using quartz vessels are generally contaminated with silicon in concentrations in excess of 5 < 10lG atoms per cu cm. This contamination is ascribed to a reaction: occurring at the walls of the crystal-growth vessel which liberates silicon into the melt and Ga2O vapor. It has been shown4 that this reaction, and, hence, the silicon contamination, can be suppressed by the addition of oxygen to the crystal-growth apparatus. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a special apparatus capable of yielding single crystals of GaAs grown in the presence of oxygen and to describe both the kinetics of silicon suppression in this system and the relationship between the carrier concentration profile and the silicon concentration profile. EXPERIMENTAL-CRYSTAL GROWTH A schematic diagram of the apparatus used in the oxygen addition experiments is shown in Fig. 1. The most important features of this apparatus are: a) the use of a sand blasted quartz boat, h) a quartz rod of length 1, with a hole of cross section A, that is placed near the boat to limit the free space volume V, over the melt during the growth, and c) the temperature gradient at and near the solid-liquid interface. Sand blasting the boat is necessary to prevent wetting of the melt. The quartz rod retards the diffusion of the GazO vapor away from the melt to the colder portions of the ampoule. A crystal is prepared by first loading a 5.5-in. boat, which has been cleaned in aqua regia, with 40 g of 99.9999 pct Ga along with 1 to 8 mg of Ga203 powder. GazO3 is a convenient source of oxygen since it reacts with gallium at the melt temperature to form Ga20 vapor, the species which apparently controls the suppression of silicon contamination. The loaded boat, the quartz rod, and the 99.9999 pct As are placed in the ampoule as shown in Fig. 1. Generally, GaAs seeds were not used since most of the unseeded growths resulted in monocrys-tals. The ampoule is evacuated to 10-5 Torr and sealed off. The GaAs melt is synthesized by placing the ampoule into a two-zone horizontal Bridgman furnace. The two zones are separated by several sandwiched layers of -in. Fibre-Fax board drilled with holes slightly larger than the OD of the ampoule. This causes a very large temperature gradient between the two zones, which is necessary for single-crystal growth. The two-zone furnace is mounted on a stand fitted with a roller bearing which allows uniform motion of the furnace in a horizontal direction. A uniform velocity of the stand is achieved by the use of a windlass device which winds up a wire attached to the stand. Movement of the solid-liquid interface is accomplished by fixing the position of the ampoule and moving the stand. Growth rates investigated in this experiment were between 0.4 and 1.2 in. per hr. The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation&apos; of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. INTRODUCTION Epithermal silver-gold deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. These deposits are found in all rock types, but historically, the most important deposits occur as veins in volcanic rocks (e.g., Creede, Colorado; Pachuca, Mexico) and as replacements in sedimentary sequences (e.g., Mercur, Utah; Carlin, Nevada). Increases in the open-market prices for silver and gold in the last few years have resulted in renewed interest in precious metals and the economic viability of large-tonnage low-grade deposits. These bulk-mineable deposits form as replacements in permeable horizons or as stockworks in the up- per parts of otherwise bonanza-type hydrothermal systems and newly recognized systems that erupted onto the surface as hot springs, fumaroles, or geysers. Large tonnage low-grade de- posits were an unconventional resource prior to price increases; however, now they constitute one of the main sources of precious metals in the United States and the importance is growing worldwide. This paper presents conceptual geologic- geochemical models of epithermal precious-metal deposits derived from studies of productive deposits throughout the world. Much of the data presented is not new. However, the interpretation of the data in terms of current concepts of hydrothermal processes is new. This paper deals with idealized and general ore-forming mechanisms, and no attempt is made either to explain the origin of the different chemistries of ore- forming fluids or to examine all of the variations in specific deposits due to local structural controls and host-rock compositions.

SOUTH AFRICAN MILLING PRACTICE All modern South African gold plants operate primarily on the principle of exposing the gold particles in the ore by fine grinding and then cyaniding the total pulp. Although there are minor variations and occasional depart- ures from established practices among the fifty gold mines in South Africa, the normal plant operations proceed as follows. After removal of waste rock by hand sorting (15Y0 on average) the ore is crushed in cone crushers to minus 1/2 inch and then ground to approximately 75% minus 200 mesh by milling with either rod, ball or pebble mills as primary units and pebble mills for the secondary grind. Classification in both circuits is almost invariably conducted with 20" cyclones of 30" or larger diameter. Gravity concentration in the milling circuit followed by barrel amalgamation of the concentrates is practiced in 70Y0 of the plants, particularly where the ore grade is high. A slightly better overall recovery is obtained than with direct cyanidation, but additional handling is involved. Johnson cylinder s , plane tables or belt concentrators, all lined with suitable types of molded rubber riffles, are used for this purpose. At all mines, cyanidation is the main process, usually conducted by continuous treatment in Pachuca tanks and pulp separation with rotary drum filters. Cyanide solutions contain about 0.0 1570 NaCN and require a protective alkalinity of 0.02070 CaO. Precipitation of the gold from cyanide solution is exclusively by zinc dust and lead nitrate using the Merrill-Crowe system in conjunction with Stellar pressure filters. The zinc precipitate is smelted, generally after a preliminary concentration by sulfuric acid, in electric furnaces, mostly submerged arc types, with a silica and borax flux, yield- ing a bullion of 8870 gold, 9% silver, and 370 base metals. The gold content of the ore varies between 0.20 and 1.0 oz Troy per short ton and extraction efficiency ranges from 9570 to 9870. In general, 4070 of the gold output is recovered by amalgamation and 6070 by cyanidation; but in some cases, it is entirely by cyanidation. Flotation has not been adopted for gold extraction as it has not proved as efficient as cyanidation. It is, however, often applied to ores containing higher than 1% sulfur for the recovery of pyrite for sulfuric acid production. On the eastern side of the Witwaters rand Basin, "run-of -mine milling” was introduced in 1960 and in three of the four mills in this area both sorting and crushing have been eliminated. The ore received from the shafts is conveyed to storage silos and then fed by Williamson automatic feed controllers to pebble mills ranging from 12 to 14 feet diameter, and 16 to 20 feet long. Drilling operations on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf are following two general plans. The first plan placed all buildings. equipment, and materials on a large platform while the second copies Lake Maracaibo drilling methods by placing a minimum of equipment on the platform and using a floating drilling tender or drill barge anchored adjacent to the platform in an attempt to take maximum advantage of flotation in an effort to reduce costs. A complete power rig, mud pits, pipe racks, and small auxiliaries have been placed on the platform as shown in Figure 1, to assure proper handling of drilling operations under the most adverse weather. This has the economic advantages of eliminating the fabrication of a large structure, a material reduction of rigging up time on each structure. and elimination of delay time on equipment while quarters and equipment placed on the tender are being rigged up. These factors have certainly proved their economic value in drill barge operations in the Louisiana and Texas coastal area. Naturally the heart of such an operation is the anchorage. This anchorage, to permit taking advantage of maximum economies. must hold the ship in a relatively fixed position under the following weather conditions: (1) Winter northwesters (2) Southeasterly gales (3) Severe rain squalls In hurricane weather all operations must be suspended regardless of method of operation and the floating tender will, if possible, be moved to a protected location. However, in case of an emergency the floating tender should be prepared to swing with the wind and seas on a single anchor as there is considerable doubt that either ship or anchorage could withstand the severe strains imposed by fixed anchorage in hurricane weather. Northwesters are reported to have developed wind gust velocities as high as sixty miles per hour and steady winds of approximately forty-five miles per hour. Fortunately these winds do not travel a great distance over water before arriving at our location, and, while they can possibly develop seas approximately eight feet high, the waves are short, and if taken on the bow or stern of a ship 250 feet or more in length they should not present a difficult problem. On the other hand southeast gales having a long fetch and maximum steady wind velocities of approximately thirty miles per hour can possibly develop long swells approximately twelve feet in height. These should develop the most severe anchorage problem. To combat these waves any workable anchorage plan should permit maneuvering the ship in such a manner as to head the bow or the stern into the seas and still maintain contact with the structure. Rain squalls develop wind gust velocities as great as sixty miles per hour. However, they are local and the seas have not been a source of great trouble. To permit continuous operation the anchorage must be able to withstand these winds broadside to the ship as the wind direction often changes radically in a very sliort time. ALTHOUGH it is obvious that in any flotation process we must have a froth, in recent years the development of collecting reagents has caused the possibilities of better frothing agents to be overlooked. Some investigators have even gone so far as to say that the number of satis-factory frothing agents was sufficient. A little consideration will show, however, that the reagents available in the past were far from ideal frothers. The properties of an ideal frother for flotation work may be set down as follows: 1. It. must form in low concentrations a copious but not too persist-ent froth. 2. It must be insensitive to hydrogen-ion concentration of the pulp; that is, it must froth equally well in an acid or alkaline medium. 3. It must be insensitive to salts, even in high concentration. 4. It must be absolutely noncollecting to both sulfides and nonsulfides. 5. Its frothing properties must not be affected by collecting reagents, including soap, the most generally used nonsulfide collector. 6. It must readily emulsify and disperse any insoluble collecting agent that is likely to be used. Clearly the existing frothers do not qualify. Pine oil, for example, is an acceptable frother for many purposes but if used in soap flotation a delicate balance between pine oil and soap must be struck because, as pointed out by Coghill1, these two reagents are incompatible in certain concentrations. The objections to soap itself as a frother are obvious, and the cresols and their substitution products all have some collecting Dower and very little emulsifying power.

The system Nh-Ir was investigated over the complete concentration range by metallography and X-my techniques, using forty one alloys. The solubility limits of terminal and intermediate phases and the solidus temperatures were determined. Five intermediate phases were found: a Nb3Ir, cubic, Cr3O type; tetragonal, ofecr thorhomhic, isostruc-turn1 with (ta-Rh); and a Nhlr3. cubic, AuCu, type. a Nb3lr and a Nbfr3 melt congruently; three eutectic and three pentectic reactions occur. The phase diagram of the Nb-Ir system had not been fully treated in the literature; only surveys of intermediate phases were found.1"5 In this study, the details of the phase boundaries were investigated as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The experimental procedures such as arc melting of powder compacts, heat treatments, solidus measurements, X-ray, and metallographic observation were identical with those used in the work on the Nb-Rh phase diagram.&apos; They will therefore not be repeated here except where the conditions differed. The purity of the niobium powder was as stated in Ref. 6; the iridium powder of 99.9+ pct purity from J. Bishop and Co., Malvern, Penn., did not contain impurities exceeding 100 ppm, except rhodium (200 ppm). The melting points and vapor pressures of both elements are very similar. This fact contributed to a very small weight loss on melting and facilitated preparation of homogeneous alloys. As shown in Ref. 6 for Nb-Rh, no oxygen pick-up exceeding 200 ppm had to be considered; this was regarded as valid also for Nb-Ir. A total of forty one alloys were used in the determination of the phase diagram; their concentrations are shown in Fig. l, which presents the phase diagram. The concentration limits as determined by the weight-loss method averaged <0.2 at. pct, and never exceeded 0.5 at. pct. Heat treatments were carried out as described in Ref. 6. Depending on the concentration, only tantalum, tungsten, or iridium containers were employed, avoiding oxide crucibles altogether. Alloys from 0 to 25 and from 65 to 100 at. pct Ir were homogenized at 2095°C for 15 hr, intermediate compositions from 25 to 65 at. pct Ir for 65 hr at 1780°C. A typical annealing-time schedule is presented in Table I. Solidus points were measured as described in Ref. 6 with the modification that samples rich in niobium were held between pieces of tantalum foil and samples of high iridium concentrations were held between rhenium platelets or in iridium wire. After each run it was ascertained metallographically that no reaction with the holder had occurred. Rhenium was selected as holder material after it had been shown in separate tests that the melting points of Re-Ir alloys rise continuously from 2440°C. Metallographic examination was carried out as described in Ref. 6, and the same procedure and etchants were used successfully. While metallographic discrimination between a Nb3lr and o was easily possible, X-ray diffraction was necessary to separate al and ct2. X-ray powder patterns were taken and evaluated as for Nb-Rh6 yielding the error limits indicated in Table 111, to be introduced later. For the determination of the invariant reactions and phase boundaries, the same techniques as for Nb-Rh6 applied. The general accuracy of invariant concentrations is regarded as somewhat higher than for Nb-Rh due to the small slope of most solvus lines.

Secondary fertilizer minerals are the mineral materials used to supply directly and indirectly the secondary and trace plant food nutrient needs of a fertilizer. Since few soils contain sufficient availability of all plant nutrients for their proper growth, man has prepared mixtures of plant food materials to correct these nutrient deficiencies. These mixtures or fertilizers, when added correctly to a soil, make it possible for abundant and economic crop growth. Many kinds of materials are used as sources of these needed nutrients. They come from natural and synthetic materials and minerals including many beneficiated byproduct compounds. A fertilizer consists largely of carriers of one or more of the three major plant foods, namely nitrogen (N), phosphorus-phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and potassium-potash (K2O). Many other nutrients are just as essential for plant growth as the three major plant foods. In fact, the efficient use of fertilizers today depends upon an adequate supply of all these other nutrients. Since these additional materials are usually removed from the soil by plants and supplied in fertilizer in less quantities than the major nutrients, they are called secondary and minor nutrients. In the early days these special nutrients were contained as impurities in the primary nutrient carriers. Today, fertilizers are made primarily from concentrated and synthetic materials which carry very few of these other essential nutrients. Consequently, many secondary and trace nutrient carriers, as salts, byproduct compounds and even minerals have to be added to fertilizers. Secondary Nutrient Carriers The secondary plant foods in fertilizer are next to the major nutrients in abundance. They are calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, silicon and sodium. Although many of these elements are added to a fertilizer as part of the major nutrient carriers, they are also added in special carriers. The large tonnage of these secondary nutrient carriers used in fertilizers represents only a small percentage of the total production of these materials. A fertilizer producer thinks in terms of materials which supply nutrients instead of minerals. Therefore, these materials will be discussed by elements. CALCIUM Soils need calcium to supply the nutrient needs of plants and maintain the desired physical and biological conditions in the soil. The available calcium is usually 40 to 80 pct of the exchangeable bases. (These bases are ones which can be displaced by other cations and determined quantitatively. They are then expressed as milliequivalents per hundred grams of soil-me.) Direct applications of lime materials such as burnt, ground or hydrated limes are the important sources of calcium for the soil. Most crops, especially legumes, have a high requirement for calcium. The average farmer does not use enough lime to maintain the proper level of available calcium. Hence, it is necessary for many fertilizers to contain soluble calcium materials for efficient use of the major nutrients. The following major nutrient carriers supply some calcium: calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate mixtures and cyanamid, and many of the phosphates. Both synthetic and natural gypsum are used in fertilizer production. Some crops such as peanuts require a large amount of soluble calcium. Gypsum is the important supplier of this soluble calcium. The sub-level caving mining method has been applied in base metal mines in Canada under a wide range of ore body and wall rock conditions. This method has been used for primary, as well as secondary mining of both small and large ore bodies of varying ore values. Early experiences of almost all operations were somewhat disappointing. This paper details the initial problems encountered, the design changes made and solutions evolved. Additional experience and the development of operating skills, have helped the method gain acceptance as a viable method for the mining conditions to which it has been adopted.
