Subboundaries may be revealed in aluminum by the formation of pits on the surface during cooling from elevated temperatures. The pits do not form in the vicinity of high- or low-angle boundaries. They are attributed to the condensation of vacancies from a super saturation produced during coolirzg. Using the vacancy pit and Schulz X-ray techniques for observing low-angle boundaries, a study was made of the transition from the nearly perfect seed to the striated structuke characterist-ic of aluminum crystals grown from the melt. It was found that the individual striation boundaries develop by the coalescence of very small-angle boundaries, as well as by the addition of individual dislocations. Several mechanisms for the formation of striations are discussed. Evidence was found suggesting that a super-saturation of vacancies exists near a growing interface, and it is proposed that the resulting climb of existing dislocalions produces "half'-loops" at the interface, which combine to form the low-angle striation boundaries. LINEAGE, or "striation" boundaries, have been studied in detail by Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1,2 in crystals of tin grown from the melt, and by Atwater and Chalmers3 in lead. They found that single crystals grown from the melt consist of regions which are separated by subboundaries that lie roughly parallel to the growth direction. A difference in orientation of 0.5 to 3 deg exists between the striated regions; the misorientation is such that the lattice of one region could be brought into coincidence with the lattice of its neighbor by a rotation about an axis approximately parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal. They observed an incubation distance for the formation of striations which increased with decreasing growth rate. They also found that in any crystal, the sum of all rotations of the lattice in one sense, in going from one striation to the next, is very nearly equal to the sum of all the rotations in the opposite sense. A striation boundary, which is a low-angle grain boundary, can be described as an array of dislocations. If it is assumed that suitable dislocations are introduced into the crystal during solidification, the formation of striation boundaries can be explained as a result of the migration of the disloca- tions into arrays. The formation of arrays is energetically favorable since the energy of an assembly of dislocations can be reduced by the interaction of the stress fields when a suitable array is formed. This investigation presents and interprets new information concerning the nature and origin of striation boundaries in aluminum. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single crystals of high-purity aluminum (Alcoa 99.992 pct) were prepared by horizontal growth from the melt.'' The specimens were subsequently electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid kept between -10° and 0°C in a bath of dry ice and alcohol. The current density was approximately 6 amps per sq in. Doherty and Davis9 have shown that in aluminum sub-boundaries with misorientations of not less than several seconds of arc may be revealed by the vacancy pit technique. During cooling from elevated temperatures pits form on electropolished surfaces of aluminum crystals as a result of the condensation of vacancies.11 Pits do not form in the vicinity of small- or large-angle grain boundaries, presumably because such boundaries act as sinks for vacancies. Boundaries of misorientations down to 3 sec of arc are revealed as pit-free regions, see Fig. 1. The Schulz X-ray technique12 was used to determine the angular misorientations of subboundaries. In this method, white radiation from a micro-focus X-ray tube is used to produce an image of a fairly large area of a single crystal surface. Subboundaries cause splitting in the diffracted image, see Fig. 2. Misorientations down to about 15 sec of arc may be observed with this technique. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION Figure 1 shows a striated aluminum crystal grown at 10 cm per hr etched by the vacancy pit technique. An incubation distance of about 1 cm is observed before the initiation of striation boundaries. Fig. 2 is a Schulz X-ray photograph of a striated crystal similar to that shown in Fig. 1. A large area of the crystal was studied by means of a series of photographs. Fig. 2, which is a reflection from the (100) plane, included about the first 4 cm of crystal to freeze. There is an incubation distance of about 1 cm, and a distance of about 2 cm over which the angle of misorientation builds up to its final value of approximately one degree. In a comparison of the creep -rupture properties of nickel in air arid in vacuum there is a reversal in relative strengths with variations in stress. At low stresses the properties are better in air while at high stresses they are better in vacuum. In the early stages of creep in a high stress test the specimen in air nzay have the lower creep rate but the one in vacuum is creeping at a lower rate in the later stages. A mechanism, involving two competing processes in terms of oxidation strengthening and weakening by surface-energy reduction, is proposed to explain these reversals. It had generally been assumed that, relative to their properties in air, the high-temperature strengths of metals would be increased in an inert atmosphere as a result of the elimination of the deteriorating effects of oxidation. However, several recent investigations have shown that the creep strength may be greater in air than in nonoxidizing gases. Pickus and Parker1 found that the creep rate of nickel was lower in air than in hydrogen or nitrogen. Internal oxidation was mentioned by Shepard and Schalliol as a possible cause for the longer creep life of Hastelloy C in air than in vacuum or helium. Sweetland and Parker, who observed lower creep rates for aluminum and copper in air than in helium, discuss the possible applicability of the dislocation-barrier mechanism to explain their results. Surface oxide layers may interfere with the escape of dislocations through the surface or with their generation there. In addition to showing the strengthening in air of low-alloy and stainless steel, and nickel and cobalt-base alloys, shahinian4 presented notch-effect data which indicate the role of stress concentrations; alloys of relatively low ductility were more sensitive to atmosphere strengthening when notched specimens were used. Although Bleakney's copper wires had a lower reduction of area in air than in vacuum, it is difficult to interpret his results in terms of strength changes since the stresses employed were not measured. In contrast to these data showing the strengthening in air, a number of investigations, most at relatively low temperatures, have demonstrated that the environment may cause a decrease in strength. These results are generally explained in terms of the effect of environment on surface energy. In a review of the subject, Benedicks and Harden use the concept of atomic bonding to explain how the adsorption of impurities would decrease the energy of a clean surface. A decrease in surface energy would facilitate the propagation of cracks or extension of the surface. Use of this mechanism is made by sato7 to explain the weakening of steel specimens bent in various liquids, by Potek and Shcheglakovs for the reduction of fracture strength of steel in molten metal, and by Benedicks and Harden for the reduction of strength of a variety of materials in a number of liquids. A similar explanation might be used for the results of Forestier and Clauss. The fracture stress of fine wires pulled in a variety of gases, including air, is lower than in vacuum. They attributed their results to the "tendency" for the gases to condense on the metal surface. That the strength of metals is affected by the type of gas in which the test is conducted has been demonstrated convincingly; the mechanism of the effect, however, is still uncertain. This investigation represents one in a series to explore the influence of variations in alloy composition and test conditions on the atmosphere effect in the expectation that the results would afford an insight into the processes taking place. AT the meeting of the Board of Directors in March 1945, plans were discussed for a special General Meeting to commemorate, in an appropriate way, the founding of the Institute at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1871. It was decided that seventy-five years of growth, progress, and achievement; of service to the profession, to the mineral industry in all its branches, and to society at large should be fittingly celebrated. Harvey S. Mudd, then President of the Institute, was authorized to appoint a General Committee on Arrangements as well as necessary working committees. On June 6, 1946, Louis S. Cates, as President, at a special meeting of the Pennsylvania-Anthracite Section at Wilkes-Barre, officially announced plans or a three-day meeting to be held at The Waldorf-Astoria, in New York City, September 16-18, 1946. Four major sessions to be addressed by eminent speakers had been-planned in some detail to constitute a "World Conference on Mineral Resources." The U. S. Department of State had dispatched a 1500-word airgram to all its diplomatic posts giving worldwide publicity to the scope and importance of the meeting; and formal invitations had been issued to more than 150 institutions in 40 foreign countries to send official delegates. These included scientific and engineering societies, educational institutions, and sundry government agencies connected with the mineral industry. However, about a month later it was found necessary to postpone the celebration. The reason was an unforeseen expansion in the requirements of the United Nations for hotel living space in New York to accommodate delegates to the meeting scheduled to start September 3; and, of course, U.N. delegates would be given priority. It was decided to postpone the Celebration-conference to the week beginning March 17, 1947; t6 devote the first three days primarily to the Celebration; and to follow it with the technical sessions, committee meetings, and other functions, that are regular features of the Annual Meeting. (communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

IN endeavoring to put the art of the steelmaker on a more scientific basis, as a means of securing closer control of the product, we must be severely critical of the basis of any theory we use. In particular, we must be careful to distinguish between factors that are primary and those of only secondary importance. The concentration relations that determine the slag-metal equilibria, which are usually more or less closely attained, are of course of primary significance, but a clear picture of the whole process requires that the actual rates of the several reactions be taken properly into account. At the high temperature of the steelmaking furnace, all reactions might be thought to be very rapid, but some of them in fact are not; the essential causes of this condition are important to a proper understanding of the process. This paper aims to present, and to justify, the viewpoint that the most significant reaction is the oxidation of carbon in the metal, the progress of which determines the oxygen pressure levels in slag and metal and produces stirring effects, all of which influence the course of the process as a whole. REACTION RATES AT STEELMAKING TEMPERATURES General experience in reaction rates makes it almost certain that at steelmaking temperatures equilibrium is attained practically instantaneously when the reactants are well distributed in a single liquid phase -that is, in the so-called homogeneous reactions. The actual slowness of some of the reactions in the open-hearth furnace must therefore be attributed to a relatively slow rate of diffusion within the slag or metal phase, which limits the rate at which the reactants can meet each other in the liquid steel or at its surface. That the reactions can be made to go with great rapidity, by proper mixing and stirring of the reacting phases, is indicated by the following illustrations: I. In the Bessemer process there is intimate contact between air and the whole mass of metal, and the reactions are complete in a few minutes. 2. Perrin1 has demonstrated that by pouring liquid steel into slag contained in a deep ladle, and thereby producing almost a slag-metal emulsion, the phosphorus or oxygen content of the steel is adjusted immediately. 3. Barret, Holbrook and Woods observed a quite rapid rate of desulphurization when powdered calcium carbide was stirred vigorously into liquid iron. 4. When a spoonful of liquid steel is poured into a mold containing aluminum wire, the formation and precipitation of alumina occurs in the fraction of a second required to freeze the surface layer of the tiny ingot. The first three examples all show that any means of increasing the effective surface between slag and metal and promoting intimate mixture of the reacting phases, thereby obviating the limitation imposed by diffusion, will enhance the speed of the steelmaking process.

ThE computer program for arbitrary crystal systems reported by Camp and Clum' has been modified to make it more convenient for hexagonal crystals. The program' uses the Miller indexes (hkl) which can be confusing for hexagonal crystals while the modified program uses the Miller-Bravais indexes with four axes; e.g., the angles between the (110) planes, Fig. 1, are 0 and 90 deg but in the (hkil) system the angles between the (1150) planes are 0 and 60 deg. If a Laue photograph is taken of a crystal oriented with the prismatic planes nearly parallel to the film then the spots on the stereo graphic projection will be from high-index planes. The probable positions of the low-index planes, e.g., (0001) plane, can only be obtained from the intersection of zones and this is not accurate to 1 or 2 deg. The number of planes considered by the program (card 1)' has to be limited to the ones of low index or the program time is excessive but a solution will not be obtained if one of the spots has an index that is not being considered. To overcome this problem the program1 was modified so that if no fit was obtained at *1 deg (card 3) of the tabulated angles then ±2 or ±3 deg was tried. If still no solution was obtained either due to one of the angles not being measured correctly to ±3 deg or because one of the spots was from a high-index plane, then the last spot was discounted and a fit tried for the remaining spots at i1 deg, and so forth. The minimum number of spots that the program will try to fit is five. If the limit on any individual index is 4 (card 1) and (h + k + l + 1) is six then twenty-three planes are considered and there are over 1000 interplanar angles. Many pairs of planes have very similar interplanar angles and with the errors previously mentioned the program will often produce several alternative solutions to a group of spots particularly at ±2 or ±3 deg. However without the program the alternative solutions would probably not have been found. If a large number of spots are used the number of possible fits is reduced. In the example shown in Fig. 2, if only spots which are on the film are used (case 1) the program gives six possible solutions, Table I. However if points 7 and 8 are also used (case 2) the program gives only one fit which also agrees with a standard projection of the crystal. In addition to time-saving the program ensures that a correct solution is obtained since it is unlikely that all the alternatives would have been gound manually; the first would probably be assumed to be the correct solution. The program has been used for zirconium crystals but is equally suitable for other hexagonal materials.

Vertical and horizontal movements beyond the perimeter of the open pit have resulted from the development of deep and extensive open pits; the surface point always moves towards the centre of the open pit. The surface movements are not only great in relation to the stability of the open pit slope and the safety of mining operations but also are of significance to the stability of structures and ser- vices on the surface beyond the perimeter of the open pit. Recently, some studies on factors contributing to the surface movements have been carried out. Particular attention has been paid to prediction of vertical and horizontal movements, differential subsidence and horizontal strain and careful assessment of their influences on existing structures in the adjacent area. In the application of the theory of stochastic medium, it is assumed that ground subsidence process has the property of Markov Process. Based on the superposit ion principle, surface movements due to open pit mining are derived from the Kolmogorov Equation, and calculated in a digital computer. Quantitative calculation of surface movements is made according to the method employed in this paper and compared with the results of measurement in Morwell Open Pit, Victoria, Australia and Baiyin Open Pit, Gansu, China. The method of calculation gives reasonably satisfactory results.

The textures which are produced by simple shear in poly crystalline samples of copper, brass, aluminum, iron, and zirconium have been determined. For the fcc materials, there are two major textures, both of which are oriented for slip on the usual slip systems. It is shown that each grain will, in general, give rise to both orientations through the production of deformation bands. This is considered a clear demonstration that such bands aye produced by the heterogeneous deformation which takes place instead of the five-slip-system model considered by Taylor. The results on iron and zirconium are more limited but would appear to exhibit certain additional complexities. It is suspected, however, that the general consideration of deformation bands may apply here also. One finds some correlation between the textures produced by this single shear and the conventional textures although it would appear- that additional data and analysis are requived to produce a strong correlation. It is somewhat remarkable that of all the texture investigations only a very few have been concerned with the action of simple shear on polycrystalline aggregates. Of these limited investigations, all used torsional strains and only in Backofen's' and Backofen and Hundy's "ork was sampling carried out so as to derive a texture in terms of the shear direction. Some rather remarkable conclusions re- sulted from Backofens'1,2work: 1) the rate of texture formation in copper is high, being almost complete at a shear strain of unity; 2) the texture does not change if the sample is sheared back, although the surface grains return to their original shape; and 3) the texture is complex in that it has four components, three of which have [110] as a shear direction. These conclusions were based on both qualitative and quantitative data. Shear deformation is intermediate in complexity between simple shear of single crystals and the usual deformation of polycrystals; hence, one might expect to learn considerable from the extension of this work. CONVENTION Deformation in simple shear has the lowest possible symmetr3, less than the other simple modes of deformation (rolling, drawing, and compression); hence, one cannot necessarily expect the textures to have the same degree of symmetry. The geometry of the process is represented by Fig. 1 along with its sltereographic projection. One has the shear plane, the shear direction, the mirror plane normal to the shear plane and containing the shear direction, and a neutral plane normal to both the shear plane and mirror plane. These planes divide the projection into four quadrants. These quadrants are not, however, identical, since all directions within the upper left and lower right are being shortened by the shear process, and the other directions are being lengthened. On the basis of a unified concept, theoretical erPressions for grain boundary migration in recrys-tallization are derzved for impurity-controlled and impurity-independent migration. The expression in the former case is analogous to that Previously derived by Lucke and Detert, and in the latter is shown to be equivalent to that usually obtained on the basis of absolute reaction rate theory. The equations are tested with quantitative experimental data for boundary migration obtained for the recrystallization of poly crystalline zone-refined alumimnz and for binary "alloys" of this aluminum with 0.00021, 0.00043, 0.0017, 0.0034, 0.0068, 0.0124, and 0.0256 at. pct Cu, respectively. All the essential characteristics of the e@erimentally determined boundary migration rates check both qualitatively ard quantitatively with the predictions of the theoretical equations. THE rates of transformations are customarily analyzed phenomenologically in terms of the two component rates—N, the rate of nucleation and, G, the rate of growth of the nuclei. The scientific aim of both theory and experiment is to describe the fundamental atomic phemmena involved in these two component processes with the hope that parameters calculated from theoretical equations will check those found experimentally. In solid state transformations, the theoretical and experimental problems are both generally of almost prohibitive complexity, for in addition to changes in composition and in such properties as density which may accompany transformations in amorphous, nonrigid materials, transformations in crystalline substances also involve structural changes, crystal reorientations, and the development of stresses. In studying such transformations it thus becomes; highly desirable, if not essential, to focus on a transformation and a set of conditions which minimize the number of active variables. This principle has been applied with considerable success by Cohen and his associates' in their evaluation of nucleation theories using the martensite transformation as the basis of study. A similar possibility exists for the evaluation of growth theories by the use of recrystallization after cold-deforming. If an unalloyed metal is employed as the subject of investigation, the recrystallization transformation involves basically only a change in strain-conditions and orientations. In spite of this possible simplilfication, however, until recently little quantitative success has attended attempts to correlate recrystal1ization parameters measured experimentally with those calculated theoretically. It seems highly probable that this lack of success may be attributed, both in the experimental and theoretical treatments, to one or more of the following factors: a) conditions have usually been studied under which apparently* both nucleation and growth are active;

General expressions are derived relating the streaming potential to the electrochemical potential of a permeable junction separating two electrolytic solutions. By the methods of irreversible thermodynamics, these potentials are related to the flux of mobile species arising from differences in pressure and chemical composition. The flux is conveniently expressed as a transference number, the equivalents of a mobile species transferred through the junction per faraday of electricity. At constant pressure, the flux equation gives the electrochemical potential across the permeable junction. The streaming potential across the junction is obtained by imposing the condition of constant chemical composition. The familiar expression for the borehole SP is shown to be a particular solution of the general flux equation. The derived exprersions were verified in experiments with seven shale samples. Both the theory and experimental data provide additional proof of the presence and magniturle of the streaming potential in shales. INTRODUCTION In the interpretation of electric logs, there has been much concern over the correction to be made to the recorded SP for an electrokinetic or streaming potential originating from the difference in pressure between the mud column and the formation. It was long recognized by M. R. J. Wyllie that such an electrokinetic potential source mas in the mud cake opposite permeable sands.' More recently, M. Gondouin and C. Scala2 showed an additional but opposing electrokinetic source of potential to be in shale beds. Their work was supported by the very extensive and excellent work of Hill and Anderson.3 n the present contribution, the general relationships between the electrochemical potential and the corresponding streaming or electrokinetic potential are examined and clarified. A notable advance towards understanding the relation between the various sources of electrical potential in a borehole has been the application of the now common methods of irreversible thermodynamics to describe the passage of ions and water through charged electrolyte junctions such as in shales.' The advantages of these methods are twofold. Unlike classical thermodynamics, they can be applied to non-equilibrium sys- tems, i.e., systems in which flow takes place, provided the flow processes have reached a steady state. They also permit conventional thermodynamic properties to be related to the steady-state dynamic properties. These methods arc used here specifically to derive expressions relating the potential behavior of shales in terms of ion and water transport. Experimental verification of the expression for the shale streaming potential is given which in turn offers theoretical support to the existence of a streaming potential in shales.' Importantly, the relative contribution of transport parameters to the SP is clarified. The theoretical treatment is essentially that of Lori-mer, Boterenbrood and Hermans3 ut has been extended to derive the general expression for the SP.

Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentage expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2: Development, including all necessary yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, drawslate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1 ½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the Beadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high.

Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. Advantages are that a direct value for the amount of calcium adsorbed is obtained, and introduction of a collector which may affect the adsorption is avoided. The difficulty is to determine the extremely small differences in the calcium concentrations before and after the abstraction. The second method was to determine the activation of the quartz by observing the contact angle obtained on pressing an air bubble against the polished surface of a piece of quartz immersed in a solution of calcium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and sodium oleate. This is the well-known "contact angle" method. The third method was to determine those conditions under which an air bubble will pick up quartz particles immersed in a solution of the desired reagents. Disadvantages common to the sec- ond and third methods are that introduction of a collector is necessary to obtain bubble contact with the mineral; very small quantities of contaminant can give erroneous results; and no information is obtainable concerning the amount of calcium adsorbed. Advantages are that tedious analyses, which at best give approximate results, are avoided, and the conditions, especially for the third method, closely simulate those of actual flotation. Although the most consistent results were obtained with the third method, this paper describes the techniques used and the results obtained from each of the three methods. Distilled water and analytical grade reagents were used throughout except where otherwise stated. Between tests all glass articles were cleaned with a chromic-sulphuric acid mixture and sodium hydroxide. Abstraction Method The raw material for the tests was Ottawa sand sized between 14 and 28 mesh. Batches of 500 g of this sand were dry ground for 1 hr in an Abbe porcelain mill with 2700 g of quartz pebbles. The batches were split down to samples weighing approximately 30 g, and the weight of each sample was adjusted to exactly this value.

Measurements of the electrical conductivity, the thermal electromotive force, and the deviation from stoichiometry by thermogravimetry were made on ferrous oxide (wüstite) single crystals as well as on poly-crystalline samples in the temperature range of -900" to 1330°C. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. IT is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have 0n Society. The development of a machine to replace several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and technology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. MAGNITUDE OF THE FUELS INDUSTRY Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the comparative values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13 1/4 billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone annually exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1020 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to 1939, $46,409,727,000 of metallic products, S80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,000,000 of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our country. (Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) IN, August, 1911, I read a paper before the Lake Superior Mining Institute' on surveying and sampling diamond-drill holes. The present paper gives a more thorough description of these methods, together with a few changes and notes suggested by further experience. Since August, 1911, the methods, used constantly by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have been developed to a higher degree of efficiency, and have given great satisfaction. Until a few years ago but little attention was paid to the determination of the actual course of drill-holes, to the accurate sampling and analysis of the material, or to the scientific location of the drill-holes. It has now been common practice for several years in many districts to test the inclination of drill-holes by etching glass tubes with hydrofluoric acid, but the direction of deviation from the vertical has not often been determined. Methods of determining the direction by means of a compass were first developed in connection with drilling in Victoria. The latest method used on the Rand in South Africa has been recently described by John I. Hoffman.2 In the same paper Mr. Hoffman describes an ingenious method of wedging-off a drill-bole so as to start new holes at several successive points. By this means a hole can be deflected in any desired direction, and the curvature can be controlled to a considerable extent, provided the rock is soft enough to permit the hole to be wedged off. Unfortunately, in the Lake Superior district, the jasper iron-formation is so hard that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do this. Chromium diffusion coatings on commercial Armco iron lead to carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries in and below the coatings. High compressive stresses are introduced into the coating and, as a result, tensile stresses are introduced into the base material below the coating. In coated samples, fatigue cracks form at the grain boundaries below the coating after only a limited portion of the total lifetime (5 to 10 pct). Residual tensile stresses and a stress concentration caused by precipitated carbides seems to be responsible for early crack nucleation. Stage I of Propagation may be divided into two substages: I-a in which the crack Propagates along grain boundaries, and I-b in which the crack propagates along slip boundaries according to a shear mode. In uncoated samples, the cracks form at slip bands after 40 to 50 pct of the total lifetime. In coated samples the Propagation process takes longer than in uncoated samples because of the moderate rate of crack extension until the crack breaks through the coating. The chromium-diffusion coating causes little if any increase in fatigue life. CHROMIUM diffusion is one of the most popular processes used to apply coatings to iron alloys. This popularity stems from the fact that the diffusion treatment is comparatively easy to carry out, and it improves certain surface properties such as corrosion and wear resistance as well as some other properties. Very little effort has been devoted to the investigation of the effect of chromium-diffusion coatings on mechanical properties and particularly on fatigue properties. Since the chromium coating usually represents a small fraction of the total volume of the base material it is generally assumed that the macro properties are dependent principally on the base material rather than the coating. Insofar as fatigue is concerned, there are indications that the fatigue life of the chromium coating is not less than that of the basic material and the fatigue properties are generally not reduced by it.' But chromium diffusion causes drastic structural and chemical changes in the region of the material surface2-4 which introduce additional residual stresses. Such changes must affect fatigue crack nucleation and may sometimes affect the initial stages of propagation. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the secondary stages of the crack propagation could be influenced by some irreversible structural changes in the core of the material, which stem from the long-time heat treatment at high temperatures required to apply the coating. This paper analyses the structural and compositional changes produced in commercial Armco iron by a chromium-diffusion coating and the effect of the coating on fatigue crack initiation and propagation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The investigations were carried out with commercial Armco iron. The chemical composition of the iron, the number of specimens tested, the grain size produced during chromizing and heat treating, and the thickness and microhardness of the chromized layers are shown in Table I. Samples were chromized by a gas diffusion process. The temperature and time of the diffusion coating process were chosen according to a previous grain growth study. It had been found that at a temperature of 970°C and a holding time of between 3 and 9 hr there are practically no changes in grain size. To describe the grain size more accurately the ASTM method5 was supplemented by a statistical analysis of the mean volume diameter as outlined by Fullman6 and The The mean volume diameter was deter- mined from D = p/2m where D is the mean volume diameter, and m is the mean reciprocal value of grain diameters as seen on the micrograph. The shape and the size of the asymmetrical sample, see Fig. 1, were chosen so as to facilitate the study of fatigue crack initiation. Before coating, the samples were machined and the surface of the groove was polished. After chromizing, the two side surfaces were machined and polished so as to retain the coating only on the top surface of the groove. Residual stress in the chromized layer was measured on the top of the grooved section of the specimen after the diffusion process. The inclined incident X-ray beam procedure was used.9'10 The computations were performed with the initial assumption of a zero surface normal stress component. THE material presented in this paper is an abstract of a thesis submitted by the writer to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part requirement for the degree of Master of Science. The investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. H. 0. Hofman, and it was conducted, under his direction, in the laboratories of the Mining Department of the Institute. The purpose of the work was, first, to study some of the reactions that have been considered as a part of the mechanism of the chloridizing roast, and second, to study the conditions under which nickel oxide and copper oxide may be chloridized. While the production of chlorine gas by various reactions during the chloridizing roast may not be primarily useful in the chloridation of metal oxides and compounds, it nevertheless serves a useful purpose in preventing the dissociation and decomposition of chlorides once they have been formed; for example, the dissociation of cupric chloride into cuprous chloride and chlorine. Therefore it was thought that a study of some chlorine-producing reactions would prove of interest, and the first series of experiments dealt with this phase of the subject. The object of the latter part of the work was to show the possibility of treating heavy sulphide ores, such as those of Sudbury, Ontario, containing much iron and small amounts of copper and nickel, by chloridizing and removing the copper, leaving an iron-nickel oxide product suitable for smelting in the blast furnace for nickel-bearing pig iron. The chloridizing of the copper would, of course, be preceded by a roast for the removal of sulphur, the sulphur oxides being available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, if under the local conditions this product would be of commercial value.
