In the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.' Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the district, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Lurmann's cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons's furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone's note-books that in October, 1840, he visited " Gibbons' new furnaces building at Corbyn Hall," and I have an old drawing,

DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in manv mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment. Mine drainages vary in percentage composition over wide limits, although the usual dissolved substances are ferrous and ferric iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium sulfates, and lesser amounts of sodium, potassium and manganese sulfates and chlorides. Some alkaline discharges may contain heavy concentrations of iron as iron bicarbonate. These waters may produce iron hydroxide deposits in the receiving stream but do not cause it to become acid. In the extensive literature on acid mine water there appears to be a great deal of confusion about the importance of various components and the methods for their determination. In many instances faulty conclusions have been drawn from use of unsuitable methods of analysis. It is desirable that the factors and terms used in evaluation of analyses of mine waters should be so clearly defined that any interested person could properly appraise any analytical report. Some analysts report complete chemical analyses of mine waters and neglect to record drainage volumes. Others report only a minimum of analytical data after taking no precautions to preserve the original composition of the water during the time elapsing between collection and analysis. Some use methods of analysis intended for so-called pure waters of the potable and boiler water classes. These methods are not applicable to highly buffered waters such as mine water. Probably the most common criteria for evaluation are pH, free acidity, or acidity or alkalinity to methyl orange or methyl red, total acidity or acidity to hot phenol-phthalein, and the sulfate content. If these determinations are made on carelessly collected samples after a few days to weeks standing in warm rooms, they do not in any way represent the character of the water flowing from the mines. It is hoped that a brief discussion of the fundamental value of some of these factors may lead to a bettqr understanding of the need for more careful evaluation of mine water discharges. The term pH is one used by chemists to express relative acidity or alkalinity in terms of concentration of effective hydrogen ion in a solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration or activity in equivalents per liter. pH = logarithm A neutral solution, which is one containing the same number of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, has a pH of 7. As the hydrogen ions increase and the solution becomes more acid, the pH decreases toward zero; and as the hydroxyl ions increase and the solution becomes more alkaline, the pH approaches 14. When dissolved in water to a dilute solution acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric, commonly known as strong acids, ionize completely, and the pH or hydrogen ion concentration varies with molar concentration of the dissolved acid. However, in high concentrations of such acids, the pH or hydrogen ion concentration is less than the acid concentration because the acid does not completely ionize. In only very dilute solutions does the pH represent the total amount of acid that can be neutralized by an alkali. All ionization reactions are equilibrium reactions. If other chemicals are added to the solution of an acid and the added chemical produces an ion that is the same as one of the ions of the acid, the degree of ionization of the acid is altered and the pH changes to some value that represents the active hydrogen ion of the new solution. Thus if iron sulfate is added to a solution of sulfuric acid the pH increases, since the common sulfate ion suppresses the degree of ionization of the sulfuric acid and decreases the effective hydrogen ion. However, the total acidity of the solution is increased. There are two salts composed of iron and sulfate— ferrous and ferric sulfate. In these salts there is no hydrogen ion that can ionize to give an acid solution, but when they are dissolved in water, the pH is less than 7 and the solution becomes acid. This is caused by a reaction known as hydrolysis and is represented by the equations FeSO4 + 2H2O ? The successful completion, January 10,1901, by Capt. A. F. Lucas, of a well, near Beaumont, Texas, whereby an enormous flow, estimated at '75,000 barrels a day, was obtained, opened a new oil-field in the United States, kindled a frenzy of exploitation and speculation, revolutionized the fuel industry of a large region, and brought gain to thousands of people. Even to-day, it is impossible to cast up the present results or to prognosticate the future influence of this event. It has caused the revival of attention in other localities where oil had been suspected, and exploration for oil throughout the Texas region. It has attracted notice to the mineral resources of the Texas region, and created an interest in the geological conditions of that great State. This State, which has increased in population and wealth, as recorded by every succeeding census, with leaps and bounds such as are exhibited by no other part of the Union, now stands fifth in population and first in productive wealth per capita. Its fields, pastures, forests and mines teem with raw material. The whole economic evolution of the State has gravitated toward a focal point where these products were available for the coming of the kiln, the machine and the factory. The only drawback to the prosperity of the State was the lack of an economic fuel, inferior coal costing an average of $5.00 per ton at the time of the Beaumont discovery. This

The author called attention to the diffusion characteristics of chromium deposited on the surface of steel by treatment with chromium chloride and alloyed with the surface layer of the steel by thermal treatment. As the data cited were previously published in the paper " Chromizing of Steel," by I. R. Kramer and Robert H. Hafner (Metals Technology, October 1942, and in the Transactions, volume 154, 1943, pages 415-420), it is unnecessary to reproduce these data here. The following paragraphs are taken from the author's presentation.— Editor.] Aside from the well-known practical application of the diffusion phenomena to carburizing and calorizing, -diffusion also finds application in adding alloying elements to the surfaces of steel parts. The chromizing of steels is a process by which the surface of a low-alloy steel may be enriched with chromium to form a highly corrosion-resistant case; This chromized case differs from an electroplated coat in that it is a diffused layer integral with the base metal and has all of the properties of a high-chromium steel. Recently a method of chromizing has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg in which gaseous chromium chloride and hydrogen are passed over the steel at temperatures of 1650° to 1800°F. The chromium chloride reacts with the iron to give chromium and iron chloride. The chromium atoms are deposited on the surface and diffuse in as the iron atoms diffuse out, forming a layer rich in chromium. The principal role of hydrogen is to remove the carbon from. the surface of the steel. Of the two mechanisms, chemical reaction and diffusion, the one operating at the slower rate will determine the rate of formation of the layer. In this case, diffusion is slower and therefore any factors influencing its rate will affect the process. The rate of diffusion is influenced by the temperature and crystal structure of the parent metal. Depth-concentration studies show that the concentration falls off gradually for a considerable distance and then drops sharply at about 13 per cent chromium, the point coincident with the boundary of the gamma loop. The influence of the composition of the base metal upon diffusion is quite important. The depth of penetration of the chromium decreases as the carbon content increases and, of more importance, the chromized layer becomes brittle and is likely to spa11 if the carbon content is too high. It appears that in order to chromize successfully the carbon must be fixed by strong carbide-forming elements such as chromium or molybdenum, which decrease the diffusion of carbon. If this is not done, the carbon will diffuse from the interior faster than the chromium can diffuse inward, thus forming a carbide barrier. The corrosion resistance of the chromized layer is high, and these steels offer some unique advantages over other corrosion-resisting coating or alloys. While chromizing is not meant to replace stainless steels, it may serve in the saving of alloying elements. The chromizing process uses soft or low alloyed steels that can be easily hot or cold formed and since the chromized layer is soft and firmly adherent, chromized parts can be subjected to cold deformation without spalling or chipping and without loss of corrosion resistance.

IT has been estimated that rock exposures in most mining districts aggregate less than 1 per cent. of the total surface area.1 Conclusions concerning the hidden 99 per cent. necessarily have been based on knowledge of only a small fraction of the surface, and from this limited information the geologist has been obliged to deduce the approximate and general nature of the underlying formations. In the search for ore it is necessary to supplement this general picture with greater detail. Fairly accurate knowledge of relatively small zones is required. This knowledge is carefully sought in many different ways-detailed interpretations of geological history, the tracing of float, the use of test pits, of trenching, of drilling, and of other methods. Practical ingenuity, scientific brilliance, great perseverance and patience, and the expenditure. of large sums of money have all been a part of this search. The problem of exploring beneath cover with economy, and of obtaining essential information which this cover hides, is obviously a difficult one. It is also a very important one, for geologists inform us that already the story of the 1 per cent. exposed outcrops has been largely read.2 There remains the nearly virgin field comprised in the hidden 99 per cent., and the importance of this zone is bound to increase continually. In recent years, the problems connected with the exploration of this "99 per cent. zone" have attracted a constantly enlarging group of investigators and at present greater efforts than ever before are being made to resolve then. This work, in its various special aspects, has enlisted, beside geologists, the cooperative efforts of chemists, physicists, and mathematicians. The progress made in this development should be kept before those directing explorations in order that due advantage may be taken of a changing situation.

A MAJOR difficulty in the experimental study of precipitation-hardening is the measurement of particle sizes too small to be easily resolved with the microscope. It has been shown recently, however, that magnetic measurements on copper-cobalt al- loys in the aged state can be used to determine the average volume, total volume, volume distribution, and shape of the ferromagnetic cobalt-rich particles, even though the particles are submicroscopic in size. r' These alloys also are known to exhibit considerable precipitation hardening. This paper reports some results on the dependence of the mechanical properties of such an alloy on the particle size, determined magnetically. It further illustrates the use of other magnetic measurements in interpreting structure changes occurring during deformation.

BefoRe a new coal-washing plant is installed, or an existing washery is remodelled and improved, considerable experimental work on the coal to be washed should be done. A thorough examination of a coal, to determine whether it can be washed successfully and the best and most economical process for securing a satisfactory grade of washed coal, calls for mine sampling, analytical work, and experimental coal-washing tests which may require several months' time and the expenditure of considerable money. Having collected the required data on the characteristics of the coal and the results secured with different types of machines under different sets of conditions, it is necessary to decide what method of treatment should be used. The interpretation of the experimental data is no small part of the problem. The first step in the investigative work is to determine from the characteristics of the coal and the manner of occurrence of the impurities whether it is possible to separate the dirt from the coal and produce a washed coal of the required quality. Then it is necessary to select the type of washer or the system of treatment that will produce the greatest amount of washed coal of this grade for the least cost. To secure this information, tests may be made at laboratories operated by consulting or contracting engineers, at the testing plants of machinery manufacturers, at commercial washeries, or in an experimental washery erected on the site of the proposed plant. Such tests will produce figures in which every factor, including analyses of raw coal and washed coal and yield of washed coal, may vary widely. THE discovery well of the world's -deepest oil producing structure, University 1-B of Group No. One Oil Corporation, in the Big Lake oil field, Reagan County, Texas, has had a remarkable record. The well is outstanding for the following reasons: (1) It is the world's pioneer well to produce. oil in commercial quantities from a structure 8500 ft. below the earth's . surface; (2) this well was the only. producer from the 8500-ft. pay for a period of 17 months and 24 days; (3) the flow of the discovery well has been free from-the customary changes at the casinghead, with the exception of putting on a back-pressure of 185 lb.; and, (4) the well's daily production of oil and gas increased rather steadily for 17 months and 18 days from an initial of 40 bbl. per day to a maximum of 2926 bbl. per day, and then six months later, after a period of decline and self-readjustment to subsurface changes caused by six more deep producers, the well set its real record for one day's production of oil at 2950 bbl

DEFORMATION of magnesium crystals in a direction parallel to the basal plane has a special significance as a result of the preferred orientation characteristic of cold worked and recrystallized polycrystalline magnesium sheet and extruded rod in which the basal plane tends to lie in or near the plane of the sheet or the axis of a rod. The principal objective of the present study is a determination of the modes of plastic deformation in magnesium single crystals in this orientation. Evidence for nonbasal slip in magnesium has been presented by a number of authors. Schmid and Was-serman&apos; indicated that pyramidal slip on {1011} < 1120> or {1012} <1120> could occur above 225°C. Bakarian and Mathewson2 stablished that the slip system {1011} <1120> operates at high temperatures and that 225°C was a lower limit for pyramidal slip. The latter authors also showed that the critical resolved shear stress for {1011} slip was 400 g per sq mm at 330°C, while that for basal slip was 66 g per sq mm at the same temperature. Thus, at 330°C basal slip should be expected for all orientations except those in which the stress axis lies almost in the basal plane. More recently Burke and Hibbard3 oserved pyramidal slip at 25°C, when the stress axis was 6" to the basal plane and 14" to a <1120> slip direction. The critical resolved shear stress for pyramidal slip was 52 g per sq mm, which is only slightly greater than their value for basal slip (46 g per sq mm). Chadhuri, Chang, and Grant4 have observed non-basal slip in creep tests with polycrystalline specimens in the temperature range 250" to 350°C. The observed slip bands, which were extremely irregular in appearance, can be explained in terms of cooperative slip on {1011} and (1010) planes which have a common slip direction. Prismatic (1070) slip in polycrystalline magnesium was observed by Hauser, Landon, and Dorn.5 It was found to occur at low temperatures (78" and 195°K) and it was accompanied by cross slip in which the cooperating plane was the basal plane. Since prismatic slip occurred only at regions of high stress concentrations, the critical resolved shear stress could not be determined. Experimental Procedure The present work was performed on crystal specimens which were all cut from the same large single crystal. The original cylindrical crystal, 0.5 x 7 in., was grown in a Bridgman type furnace in which the temperature gradient was moved past the stationary crystal in the manner described by Jillson6 and Burke.&apos; High purity magnesium was furnished by the Dow Chemical Co. with the following spectro-graphic analysis in weight percent: 0.003 pct Al, <0.01 pct Ca, 0,002 pct Cu, <0.001 pct Fe, 0.008 pct Mn, <0.001 pct Ni, <0.002 pct Pb, <0.01 pct Si, <0.001 pct Sn, and <0.01 pct Zn. The large crystal was cut into four cylindrical pieces about 1.5 in. long. A method of accurately determining the value of gold-bearing ores and gravels with a compact field-outfit is much desired by prospectors, especially when the work lies in a district far removed from railways or good wagon-roads. We are all familiar with the fire-assay of gold-ores, and fully recognize its accuracy and value; but only those who have tried to determine the value of a gold-bearing vein as a commercial venture, from fire-assays of selected samples, know how misleading is the information thus obtained, however carefully and honestly the samples may be selected. INTRODUCTION The process of financing mining projects in developing countries has changed greatly in the past 15 years. New methods of financing, notably the use of syndicated Eurocurrency project loans, have appeared, and direct equity financing by transnational mining corporations has become less significant. These changes are of particular importance to developing countries which have many mineral deposits still awaiting development, or even discovery. If major new mines are to be financed, host governments will need to obtain more sophisticated information than has hitherto been widely available as to the various sources of finance currently available and as to possibilities for innovative approaches to financing, such as the combination of several different kinds of financing in a single package. This paper reviews the major sources of mining finance potentially available to developing countries and highlights those problems in obtaining adequate financing that developing country producers have begun to experience in the last few years and that are likely to persist through the 1980s. Section I surveys the major types of mining finance; section II reviews specific financing problems, including (a) the withdrawal of the transnational corporations from developing countries, (b) inflation and the size of new projects; (c) developing country indebtedness, and (d) competition among projects in different countries. SOURCES OF DEVELOPING COUNTRY MINING CAPITAL1/ There is a wide range of financing mechanisms which are potentially available to developing countries with economically viable mining projects., Moreover, these financing mechanisms have not been fully exploited by developing countries, and more aggressive pursuit of financing by the governments of these countries may well reveal greater possibilities in respect of any particular project than may initially have appeared. However, virtually all the funds available from these sources are available only to projects which meet the standards of viability acceptable to lenders and others in the business community. If a project does not, for example, promise to generate a discounted cash flow rate of return of at least 15 per cent on total funds employed, or if it does not appear likely to generate sufficient cash flow in the early years of production to cover debt service requirements with a comfortable margin in reserve, most of the sources of financing will not be available. Only where a government has its own financial surplus (as in the case, for example, of the industrialization program of the Saudi Arabian government) can it effectively undertake projects which do not satisfy the definition of economic viability that is accepted at any given time by the worldwide financial community. Internal Sources In Developing Countries Internal financing capacity in developing countries is restricted to a relatively small number of countries - typically those large enough to support a well-rounded industrial sector, in which mining is only one of a number of dynamic industries. While there are large mining companies in certain other countries, the ability of such companies to finance new projects (or even, in some cases, to generate the cash necessary to maintain existing levels of production) is highly problematical. Within developing countries, the possible sources of internally-generated mining finance are the following: (1) state-owned enterprises; (2) private capital; (3) the banking system, and in particular those financing agencies that have a special involvement with the mining sector; and (4) direct budgetary appropriations.

The effect of production history of a well on the results of two-rate flow tests, and conventional build-up analyses was investigated. The effect was examined by means of digital computers and an R-C network model, respectively, for wells with infinite and finite radii of drainage. For systems which behave as infinite, it was found that production history and the duration of production at constant rate prior to the initiation of the test have important effects on the results. During build-up time equal to about one-fourth of the stabilized time, correct permeability-thickness product calculations can be made. For wells with finite radii of drainage, the time was determined during which the straight line can be satisfactorily used for permeability-thickness product calculations in case of drawdowns and build-ups. On build-ups, the dimensionless time (based on the external radius) during which the straight line gives reliable results was detertriined to be about 1/12. This is one-fourth as long as that of the drawdown. The investigation was done theoretically, and subsequently was verified by R-C network model runs. General interpretive rules were formulated which, if not followed, could lead to serious errors. Moreover, a recommended testing procedure is reported. INTRODUCTION The method used by most reservoir engineers for estimating formation characteristics in a producing well is the analysis of pressure build-up data. The method originally devised by Horner&apos; makes use of the point source solution to the diffusion equation. This solution is approximated by a logarithmic function and the superposition principle is employed to arrive at the well known pressure build-up equation:where q, the flow rate, is in reservoir B/D; ft is in cp; kh is in md-ft; At is the shut-in time; and t is the producing time. At and t are in any consistent time units. Ey. 1 is applicable to a well of unlimited drainage radius which produces at a constant rate q from zero to time t and is then shut in. Such a constant production rate seldom obtains in practice. Therefore. a correction term must be applied to Eq. I to account for the varying rate. Two theoretically accurate methods are available for treating the variable rate case. The first, originally derived by Horner,&apos; is based on the application of the superposition theorem. It requires knowlege of production history of the well as a function of time and results in lengthy and laborious calculations. The second t*q* niethod is suited for short production tests and requires that the shut-in time be at least one and one-half times the production time. A third method which is not based on any theoretical justification and which was suggested by Horner as a "good working approximation" is the one used by the majority of reservoir analysts. especially when the well has been producing for a long time and the t*q* method is not practicable. The key to this method is in choosing or determining the t that appears in Eq. 1. Horner suggested using a corrected time t, in place of t. t, is calculated by dividing the total cumulative production by the last established rate. Therefore, a normal procedure of pressure build-up testing is to stabilize the well at a constant rate for at least 24 hours before shut in and to use the stabilized rate to calculate t,. The analysis is then made by plotting either or P. and examining the resulting plot for the expected straight line to calculate kh and the original reservoir pressure. Recently, Russell" proposed a method for determining formation characteristics from two-rate flow tests. His method reduces to pressure build-up if the second flow rate is zero. Russell uses the Horner simplified procedure for calculating a corrected t,. His method also requires the stabilization of the well at a constant rate q which is used to calculate t,. Theoretically, the above procedure is valid for a well with an unlimited radius of drainage or with a limited radius as long as the boundary effect has not been felt by the well. Several authors&apos;&apos; derived formulas which allow the estimation of time during which limited reservoirs behave as infinite ones and, thus, can be treated by unsteady-state mechanics. One equation derived by Swift and Kiel&apos; terminates the application of unsteady-state theory when the drainage radius reaches one-half the reservoir radius. Extensive sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 yegrs by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The $fur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jackson County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out.. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent. sulfur. The coal mined in the district is No. 6 or Herrin coal, commonly known as the Carterville or Franklin County coal. The bed has a thickness varying from about 8 ft. (2.4 m.) on the border of the low-sulfur area up to more than 10 ft. (3 m.) in the central portion, locally having a thick-

Most early development and application of electromagnetic prospecting methods took place in Scandinavia, where geological conditions favor their use. In other parts of the world these methods have aroused cycles of interest, but in Scandinavia they have been used continuously and successfully since the 1920&apos;s. Electromagnetic methods may be classified into two general groups. One group includes methods in which the source of the electromagnetic field remains stationary while the receivers are moved about to explore the area. The other includes procedures in which the energizing and receiving systems are moved together. Other classifications could be based on the size of the energizing source, the particular components of the electromagnetic field which are measured, or the mode of transporting the equipment. The difference between fixed-source and moving-source methods, however, is of such great fundamental importance that it will be emphasized in this discussion. FIXED-SOURCE METHODS Essentially, a fixed-source method consists of the measurement of electromagnetic fields about the source. The mutual coupling between the source and the earth is constant, but the mutual coupling between the receiver and the earth (unless the earth is homogeneous) and also between the source and the receiver changes at each station. The results are usually normalized by relating the field data to the calculated free space or primary field. Turam and Radio Reference Signal Methods: The turam or two-frame* (see Fig. 1A) is probably * Turam means two-coil. the most common fixed-source method. The energizing source is an insulated cable grounded at both ends or formed into a large rectangular loop. Measurements are taken along a traverse at 5 to 50-meter intervals using two small receiving coils, the lagging coil being placed at the position previously occupied by the leading coil. The complex ratio (i.e., inphase and out-of-phase ratios) of the voltages induced in the two coils is measured. Operating frequency range is about 100 to 800 cps. In a typical turam survey a straight, grounded cable several kilometers long is laid out parallel to the probable strike of the ore deposits or conducting strata being sought. An area extending 1 or 2 km on each side of the cable, and within 1 or 2 km of the ends of the cable, is surveyed. Measurements are made at stations 5 to 25 m apart along traverses perpendicular to the cable. Measurements may be made along lines parallel to the cable to serve as base lines for the traverses or for other special purposes. Commonly the receiving coils are oriented with their planes horizontal so that only the vertical component of the field is measured. If additional information is required, one of the hori- zontal components may also be measured by orienting the coils with their planes vertical. In a modified turam technique developed recently for both ground and airborne measurements (Fig. 1B) the amplitude of the complex voltage induced in a single receiving coil is measured and its phase compared with that of a reference signal transmitted from the energizing system by a radio frequency carrier. Thus the un-normalized field is obtained directly, whereas with the turam method it is obtained by calculation from the ratios. The turam method and its modifications have a greater working depth than the other electromagnetic procedures used in ore prospecting. Under favorable conditions conductors have been located at depths of 200 to 300 m. A modified turam method with one of the electrodes grounded in the upper end of a plunging orebody was used to follow the extension of this body to a depth of 200 m beneath a layer of conducting schists. Straight grounded cables are usually preferred to insulated loops because they are easier to lay out and because they often make the method more sensitive. The greater sensitivity of a grounded cable is a result of ground return currents which may flow in the orebodies in addition to the eddy currents caused by induction from the current in the cable. Anomalies in the vertical field due to eddy currents are characterized by a correspondence between high values for the inphase component and positive out-of-phase components and/or low values for the inphase component and negative out-of-phase components. Also the inphase component may approach zero, but it does not become negative. In very long continuous conductors that are parallel to a grounded cable the effect of ground return currents may far exceed the effect of eddy currents. These ground return currents cause a lack of correspondence between the inphase and out-of-phase components and may cause negative inphase or anti-phase components. It becomes difficult to carry out the measurements and often difficult to interpret the results. Such results immediately suggest the presence of graphitic strata, however, since ore deposits are rarely extensive enough to accumulate sufficient ground return current to cause these results. A cable laid out perpendicular to the strike or an insulated loop is sometimes used in areas where graphitic schists and slates are present. Anomalies are then completely or almost entirely due to eddy currents and are easier to interpret. The measured voltage ratios are normalized by either subtracting or dividing by normal field ratios calculated from free space considerations. The normalized ratios are then plotted as individual profiles. When significant anomalies occur in the ratio measurements, the actual normalized fields are calculated by beginning with a measured or an assumed value for the field at a point near the cable and successively multiplying this value by the normalized ratios. There is a similarity between this process and a numerical integration of the ratio curve. Conversely, in many respects the ratio curve is similar to the first derivative of the field curve.

NO one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who arc living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they arc utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of Knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more conformable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, hut not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

Is an accurate measurement of the efficiency of a screen under a given set of operating conditions valuable? If so, what is the efficiency of a screen and how can it be measured? Sizing, especially of the finer sizes of material, has increased in importance in the development of flow sheets as a result of the perfecting of the rapid vibrating screens. More consideration should be given screens in the preparation of ball-mill feed, where they permit the admission of a dryer feed than the classifier. Where possible, the introduction of a screen ahead of the primary ball-mill, and the diverting of ore below, say, 4 mm. to a secondary mill, might result in a greater overall economy because of the thicker feed and the better adjustment of crushing media and mill operation to the reduction demanded. With the present trend back toward a combination of gravity methods and flotation, rather than flotation alone, the accurate, economical sizing possible with the new screens makes fine jigging a method to be considered. W. o. Borcherdtl and John Bland= discuss the screening problem and also the value of close sizing in the concentration of some of the rare-metal ores. If a screen is to be used, it should be selected in competition with others; other things being equal, that screen which makes the cleanest oversize should be preferred. The quality of the screening and the tons handled per dollar together determine the choice and, therefore, both of these must be accurately measured if a correct decision is to be reached. Too frequently in mill design, the capacity has been considered almost to the exclusion of the completeness with which the undersize is separated from the oversize. It is, of course, possible to increase the aperture of the screen, and thus insure the removal of a sufficiently coarse
