The Climax design is for the human being and his needs. Climax President Arthur Bunker has likened the high mountain operation to a giant, 250 million tons in weight, and 12 thousand feet high. No matter how huge or complicated the plant, the design must assure efficient operation by its human operators. By the same token, living and playing facilities must be designed for fullest satisfaction in use-else the capital investment is not justified. Even the product, molybdenum, finds its application through the ever growing demands of a highly industrialized society of humans. Research in Climax Laboratories, in tune with our technical age, helps guide molybdenum to its maximum use for society.

The diversity of methods available to engineers and geologists for studying rock masses is a reflection of the fact that, despite the rapid and encouraging progress made over the last few years, there is still no unified and comprehensive method which can be used to predict the over- all behavior of a foundation. Nevertheless, it is agreed that the fundamental characteristic affecting the engineering properties of rock is fissuration, and this paper de- scribes a few new or improved methods of studying fissuration and its influence on major engineering factors such as permeability, deformability, or internal stresses in the rock volume. TESTS ON SAMPLES Conventional tests on samples using thin slices can be improved by staining the slices before cutting with certain ionic dyes which have an affinity for certain types of surface. This shows up the microdiscontinuities. For example (quoted terms are French trade names) : "Turquoise Motylhne JSA" will show up porous alteration of basic feldspars. "Vert brillant SA" is used for acid feldspars. "Fushine ASA" will show up voids in all rocks. A mixture of "Turquoise" and "Rhodamine BSA" will show up zones of alteration in all types of feldspars. With this technique, it is easy to make an optical classification of the different structural types, e.g.: (1) rocks completely free from voids; (2) rocks with microfissures, which in turn can be subdivided into (a) rocks with microfissures secant to the mineral structure, (b) rocks with microfissures parallel to the mineral structure, and (c) rocks with ran-

PostScript to a paper presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 129 to 154. The writer looked over the quarry with care in the search for fossils, having in mind shells or corals of fairly large size. In the brilliant summer sunshine, none were observed on the glaring white ledges. The impression was gained that none were present and the statement to this effect was made in the edition of this paper published in the Bulletin' of the Institute for February, 1915, p. 136. On closer examination in the laboratory it has been discovered that the limestone itself is made up of minute organisms, which are clearly revealed by microscopic examination of thin sections. The principal component of the rock is a small foraminifer, 0.1 to 0.3 in. (2.5 to 7 mm.), of the genus Orbitoides, presumably an Oligocenic form. Figs. 1 and 2. illustrate it. The accompanying description has been kindly summarized by Marjorie O'Connell, M. A., Curator in Paleontology in Columbia University, who first detected the evidences of organisms in the rock. Orbitoides kempi O'CONNELL N. SP.1 The foraminiferan which makes up the Seboruco limestone is an Orbitoides of a Species new to North America. The only Orbitoides heretofore described from this country is 0. mantelli from the lower Oligocenic of the Gulf States. This form from Cuba, then, so different in all of its characteristics from the 0. mantelli, is of great interest as perhaps forming a basis of correlation over wide areas. The most closely related Species is 0. dispansa Sowerby, which occurs in the Nummulite limestone of the Eocenic of the Bavarian . Alps, in the Priabona beds of the lower Oligocenic of Massano, and elsewhere in Italy, as described by Gümbel.2 The age of the limestone in Cuba would thus Seem to be of upper Eocenic or lower Oligocenic age, probably the latter. The fossil has the form of a sphere Surrounded by a wavy rim of horizontal extent, the whole resembling two flat-brimmed, round-crowned hats placed base to base. The total extent of the Shell ranges up to 7+ mm., while the thickness of the central sphere is 2.5 mm. in one of the largest individuals. Like all of the other Species of Orbitoides, this form begins with a Single layer of chambers which multiply in one plane and assume a circular outline; but it is in the subsequent growth that the distinguishing specific characters appear, for the chambers at the central portion of the shell increase more rapidly than do those near the periphery and in consequence a Swelling is produced which finally gives the Spherical form which is so characteristic. The rim, on the other hand, shows little chamber-increase and remains thin. This is clearly Shown in the sections figured, where the central row of larger chambers forms the equatorial zone. Radiating from this row, in section, there appear, a number of solid cones alternating with broad reticulated ones. The solid cones mark the more dense structure forming the walls surrounding the reticulated or chambered cones. These appear upon the Surface as distinct pits, whereas the solid part appears as raised walls.

Y.—One thought lias been running through my mind during the wholc of this meeting and that is that the scientific and the practical men must recognize very clearly their interdependence. The value of scientific classification of coal is going to be of the very greatest importance to the users, the practical men. Is not the scientific investigation and the great amount of work that is being done in a measure at least lost to the world? Therefore the scientific investigations and the practical needs of the users should bo brought as close together, and the work should be done as closely together, as possible; that is, the scientific man should know what the practical man needs, and the practical man should not feel that the scientific man is merely a theorist. Scientific investigation is going to have a great effeet and be of great valuc to the practical man who is trying to solve his problems. In the subject which I discussed' for instance, we must look to the scientific man to tell us why coal cokes in one way and not In another and why certain coals will do certain things and others, which appear on the surfacc to be generally similar, do not act in the same way. Need or Physical Data on Coal H. J. Rose, Pittsburgh, Pa.—There is a subject which is a sort of hobby of mine; that is, the need for what might be called critical tables of constants for coal. The chemist has big volumes giving constants, such as the density, solubility, specific heat, thermal conductivity and all other physical and chemical data that have been determined for chemical compounds. Data arc also available on many common materials, for example, the density, hardness, modulus of rupture or maximum crushing strength of swamp white oak as compared with some other wood. In fact, physical data for practically cvery hype of wood commercially produced in the world can he found. In the same way the metallurgical man has handbooks giving the properties of alloys, etc., but we havc very little tabulated information about coal. Our principal reference works are the volumes published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the proximatc and ultimate analysis and calorific values of coals of the United States. That is 3 pioncer work of enormous value, but we have reached the point where we need more diversified information. Mr. Fulweiler raised the question of the relative strength of the different coals and cokes. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Ashley wanted to have some information on the resistance of coal to air slacking. It was brought out in the discussion that we want to know something about the coking properties of coal. There are any number of physical tests that we need, such as the thermal conductivity of certain coals, the coefficient of expansion, or the coefficient of friction; or other constants. A smattering of such information is scattered through the literature; for instance, a research worker in Wales will report a coefficient of expansion on Wclsh coals and one in South Africa will report something else for one or two kinds of African coals, hut it is difficult to find the information that is needed on our own coals. Although the Siemens regenerator principle was introduced into byproduct coke-oven design about 40 years ago, many problems of construction, and particularly of heat distribution and pressure conditions, have not been fully solved. Heat should be applied to the walls of a coke oven in such a way that the coking of the charge of coal will be completed everywhere at the same time, and at approximately the same temperature. This means that the application of heat should be uniform from the top to the bottom of the coal mass (except for the thin layer at the top that is purposely kept at a somewhat lower temperature to reduce cracking of the byproducts); also that a little more heat must be applied to the coke end than to the pusher end, because the coal mass is a little thicker at that end. As a modern coke oven is about 40 ft. long and 12 ft. high, a real problem is involved in the proper application of heat to the oven walls so as to secure quick coking time (without endangering the walls through local overheating) and produce coke made at a uniform temperature. Design of Ovens In all regenerative ovens, the points of combustion are arranged in duplicate sets, one set operating in one-half the area of the heating wall and the other set alternately operating in the other half. Because of the reversal of the flow of gases, the points of maximum and minimum temperatures are alternately located at the same places, thus preventing dangerous local overheating. The practicability of the principle of reversal of flow seems to have been recognized at an early date, and has been applied with every conceivable flue arrangement, combustion chamber, and means of air and gas supply. To summarize the various principles that have proved useful for the control of oven-wall temperature, the best practice seems to have resulted from the acceptance of the use of vertical flues; the separate supply of air and gas to the base of these flues, with the resulting flame

During the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,l,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. Problems One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3'4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. Instruments and Methods Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

TRIAL installations of rock bolts, of the slit-rod-and-wedge type, were under way at several units of Day Mines, Inc., when Korean hostilities interrupted the already slow deliveries of steel bars to the Coeur d'Alene district. Factory-made bolts had not yet been put on the local market, so the program was halted for lack of supplies. Interest was revived by a visitor's description of wooden roof bolts. These were said to have been used briefly with apparent success in a coal mine, until apprehension voiced by the U. S. Bureau of Mines caused the practice to be suspended. To make wooden bolts for trial in ground support, Day Mines acquired a second-hand doweling machine equipped with two cutting heads, one to turn out the desired round rods of 2-in. diam, the other to turn out 1-in. rods to be used as powder-tamping sticks. This machine was installed in the all-weather sawmill of the Hercules mine unit at Burke, Idaho, where fabrication of the wooden bolts commenced early in 1951. Most of the mining in the Coeur d'Alene district is along steeply dipping veins in shaly quartzite and argillite of Algonkian age. Ground support commonly is required in zones where the rocks have been sheared, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered. Pressure from the sidewalls is more troublesome than weight overhead, but both increase with the size of the mine opening. Caving may come from a progressive sloughing of irregular rock fragments or from an exfoliation and buckling of the layered wall rocks. The disintegration is thought to develop from an initial elastic expansion of the rock toward the newly-created mine opening, followed by the dilation of many tiny partings in the rock by absorption of water. As the partings widen, masses of rock develop weight and become free to fall. The function of rock bolts is to prevent or retard widening of partings in the rock supported. Wooden Bolts, Wedges and Headboards Bolt assembly used by Day Mines consists of a bolt 4 or 6 ft long, two wedges 16 in. long, and a headboard 30 in. long, Fig. 1. All four pieces are made of local red (Douglas) fir, either green or well-soaked in the mill pond before it enters the sawmill. Bolts are fabricated from cants, 2 1/4 in. sq, cut from relatively straight-grained timber with a minimum of knots and trimmed to 4- and 6-ft lengths. The bolt then is turned in the doweling machine from 21/4 in. sq to 2 in. diam round, except for a 4-in. length at one end which is left full square to provide the striking head and the shoulder that holds the headboard in position for wedging. The foot end of the bolt is slit with a thin saw for a length of about 16 in., thereby making a slot to receive the wedge against which the bolt is driven for anchorage at the bottom of the rock hole. A similar slit, 12 in. long, is made in the opposite (head) end of the bolt to receive the second wedge, which crowds the headboard against the ground at the collar of the rock hole and puts the bolt in tension. The second slot is aligned 90" from the plane of the first slot to avoid Longitudinal splitting and is notched out slightly to allow easier insertion of the collar wedge after the bolt has been driven to bottom. To prevent splitting the headboard by spreading action of the head wedge, this slot is oriented at 90" to the grain of the headboard when the pieces are assembled, Fig. 2. The wedges are similar to standard mine wedges, but more slender; they are cut 1 7/8 in. wide and 1 in. thick at the heel and taper out in 16 in. of length. The headboard, or bearing plate, is not necessary for some types of ground but generally is desirable because it helps the bolt to support an area of loose, friable rock and reduces the tendency for the rock at the collar of the hole to split away from the wedged head by distributing the pressure over a wider rock surface. The headboard may be a 24-to 30-in. length of 3-in. plank, 8 to 12 in. wide, but a similar length of rounded sawmill slab serves equally well at 20 pct of the cost. A hole of 2-in. diam is bored or punched through the center of the headboard, either at 90" or at various high angles to its surface. The bolt is inserted to its shoulder through this hole, then driven into the rock hole. Bolts, wedges, and headboards are given a full timber preservative treatment to inhibit rot. Bundles of each are immersed in a warm saturated solution of Osmose salts in water for 48 hr, removed, dripped dry, and stored in a relatively humid underground depot to cure. Most wooden rock bolts used by Day Mines are 4 ft long. Holes to receive them, about 42 in deep and 2 1/8 in. in diam, are drilled into the rock' to be supported, nearly normal to the periphery of the mine opening. The type of drill used is dictated by convenience: stoper, jackleg, or jumbo-mounted drifter. Correct depth of the hole is assured by use of a measuring stick that has been cut to the proper distance from drill chuck to the ground at the collar of the hole when a standard length drill rod is at the bottom. The bolt is seated to the shoulder through the hole in the headboard, the foot-end wedge is placed in its slot, and the assembly is inserted into the rock hole. The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960s. During 1967 the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, CO in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (Shabbir and Tame, 1978). Atlas Minerals, Moab, UT has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in uranium concentrates since 1969 (Caropresso and Badger, 1973). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low-grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product. Although the hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium has, and continues to be used primarily as means of producing a high purity yellowcake, it has also become an important process due to the superior physical properties of the precipitate. Under normal operating conditions, the precipitate produced by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and uranium is dense, easily filtered and dried. The final dry yellowcake is pure, high U308 assay product. Consequently, processing costs such as filtering, drying and/or calcining and drumming, can be reduced compared to ammonia, caustic or Mag-Ox precipitation.

The greatest single obstacle in the path of constructive action in making conservation a reality is the inherent discord in the hearts of men. A perfect society doubtless is many millenniums removed from the present generation, but it must be admitted that progress toward a conservative use of our natural heritage with the altruistic concept of the greatest good for the greatest number for the greatest time can be attained only by a society in which discord is reduced to a minimum compatible with the limitations of human nature. Daily industrial discord is witnessed between management and labor which passes the bounds of arbitration and results in stoppages of production, waste of productive capacity, idle capital, idle labor, and the complete loss of the most unrecoverable element of all-time. The conservation of material things cannot progress independently of the conservation of the efforts of the human worker, and the results of these efforts are proportional to life itself as measured in hours and years. Unfortunately discord passes international boundaries, and the story of war is as old as the story of mankind. Our recent attempts of international control of nations appear to be dismal failures. THIS paper presents in an abbreviated form the chief points of interest in an investigation of the tarnish-resistant qualities of silver alloys, an investigation which has been carried out as a joint research by the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Standards and will later be reported in detail in an official publication from these bureaus. In 1923 a Commission of Gold and Silver Inquiry was created by a Resolution of the U. S. Senate to study the causes of the depressed condi¬tion of the gold and silver industry. In cooperation with this commission the Bureau of Mines made a preliminary survey to determine in what ways, if any, it might be possible to increase the uses of silver. One of the possibilities indicated by this survey was the development of silver alloys which should be non-tarnishing, or at least less-tarnishing, than the usual sterling silver (copper-silver). The preparation of a rather wide variety of silver alloys and the determination of their behavior under accelerated tarnish tests in the laboratory was therefore undertaken by the bureaus, of Mines and Standards as a joint investigation. PREVIOUS WORK ON TARNISH RESISTING SILVERS At about the time this work was undertaken interest in tarnish-resisting silvers was rather keen due to announcements from England that there had been developed a new silver alloy, "Silanca," which was resistant to tarnish. It was even frequently described in the popular press as "non-tarnishing." A few samples and several analyses of "Silanca" which were available indicated that it was an alloy of sterling fineness, that is, it contained about 93 per cent. of silver, with approximately 4.5 per cent. of antimony and either cadmium or zinc, or both, to make the remaining 2.5 per cent.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. Edmund Gybbon SpilsbURy, mining and metallurgical engineer of international reputation, died suddenly of heart failure on May 28, 1920, in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, following an operation for cataract, which had been successfully performed a few days before. Mr. Spilsbury was one of the early members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which he joined in 1873. During all this time he contributed freely of his time and ability. He was manager of the Institute from 1885 to 1887, vice-president, 1893 and 1894, and president in 1896. Casper Harkort, and had charge of most of the detail work of the Keulenberg Bridge in Holland, the Danube Bridge in Vienna, and the Rhine Bridge at Düsseldorf. In 1870 Mr. Spilsbury came to the United States to investigate the lead and zinc resources for the Austro-Belgian Metallurgical Co. Edmund Gybbon SpilsbURy, mining and metallurgical engineer of international reputation, died suddenly of heart failure on May 28, 1920, in the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, following an operation for cataract, which had been successfully performed a few days before. Mr. Spilsbury was one of the early members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which he joined in 1873. During all this time he contributed freely of his time and ability. He was manager of the Institute from 1885 to 1887, vice-president, 1893 and 1894, and president in 1896. THE CHAIRMAN.-Mr. Earle Smith- has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. SMITH,* Cleveland, Ohio-I will start this off by a story of the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "We don't make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don't dare publish the information. So if I collect it and hide it you can't charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation. So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "-academic-matter-as far as II am concerned. ¬I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1936 about the coming war. He said: "Until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don't pay any attention to what is happening to the other man." That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the comptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were not within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the comptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I would say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications. I don't know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. If the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for what they expect to be umpire results, the writers would certainly realize that some of the specifications to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they, certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not be filled by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I want you to think about, because I would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them. In the first place, we generally make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has been nearly enough consideration given to segregation within the bath before it moves into the ladle. I am sure that any of the people who handled the 9400 series of the NE series when it contained the 0.60 per cent silicon have more respect than they had previously for the segregation that is within the ladle; that is, before the metal reaches the ingot mold, the frozen ingots and the segregation in them. Another point to which I think we ought to give serious consideration is the segregation of iron oxide in the ingot-iron type of material, where the distinction between that and the steel segregation is that it is actually segregating iron oxide. Normally we are segregating some form of carbon or sulphur, or something like. that, with the stamping steel industry now coming down into the ranges of chemistry, where the segregation of iron oxide will be just

IN making a glass model of mine-workings, each mine will present some little individualities, to meet which will call for the exercise of special ingenuity. Having made several models, I offer the following details of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings, believing that with small changes for different conditions the method described can be successfully used in making a glass model of the workings of any mine. The model, Fig. 1, has the top, one end, and the front removed. The case is made of kiln-dried pine, painted with several coats of dead-white paint. It is made to take sheets of glass 24 by 42 in. in size, and is 18 in. high, the workings shown being on a scale of 1 in. = 40 ft., or 4800 : 1 scale. The base is made of four pieces of 2-in. material, well pinned and glued together. The back, of material 1 in. thick, is secured rigidly to the base by screws and countersinking. The four posts, 1.5 in. square, are so cut that. the front and two ends of the model fit in flush with the outside edges of the posts. The top rails, 1 in. square, are fastened rigidly to the front and back posts by means of small iron braces. The ends, front, and top of the case are of 0.5-in. material; the ends and front are held in place at the bottom by pegs fitting into the base ; at the top the ends are held by buttons and the front by cupboard-hooks on the inside. Hinged hasps on the cover, fitting over staples in the end-pieces, make it easy to lock the entire case. Before the back is fastened to the base, it is cut with horizontal and vertical grooves to receive the horizontal and vertical sheets of glass, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal grooves, spaced to scale, represent the vertical distances between the levels at the shaft. The vertical grooves are placed wherever cross-sections of the workings are desired.

As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter.
